Welcome to the latest edition of Broomfield Times for 2015.

This issue coincides with the publication of the City Councils consultation on housing proposals to take us up to 2036. The Parish Council are working hard to influence the discussions and minimise the impact on Broomfield and the surrounding area. You can find more details on pages 6-7 plus a separate flyer which includes information about a public meeting and how you can respond to the consultation. This is an important issue and the Parish Council urges you to voice your opinion. As usual we have full reports from a number of village organisations plus some promotional articles for new and existing activities in the Village Hall on pages 40 to 44. Details of church services over the Christmas period are on pages 11 and 35. Have a Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year! Selina

Parish Council Chelmsford Local Plan Issues and Options Consultation - Respond by 4:45pm 21 January 2016

Broomfield under threat November 2015

Chelmsford City Council has published its first ideas for how Chelmsford Map 1 - Option 1 Urban Focus should expand between 2021 and 2036 and Broomfield is in the frame once again for significant greenfield development.

from 1,500 more houses Three options are suggested, with greenfield housing numbers for Broomfield ranging from 1,500 dwellings in Option 1 to 750 in Option 3 (see diagram). In all 3, the area proposed is one of the areas residents most want to protect, according to the Broomfield Parish Plan – the north and west of Broomfield, around the Hospital. This also raises the prospect of even more traffic being added to the full length of Main Road in order to get to Chelmsford, adding to the current high traffic volumes going to and from Broomfield Hospital and Braintree. In addition, the prospect of a new road to the west of Broomfield is back on the table in all 3 options. The consultation for our Parish Plan showed more opposition than support amongst residents for this route, even if it wasn’t linked to any housing development. The likelihood is that this western road would need a far larger quantum of housing to secure enough developer funding than the figures suggested in the new consultation document. This raises the prospect of even more new development, obliterating valued open countryside around the village and adding even more Chelmsfordbound traffic to Main Road. In the current planning period (up to 2021), Chelmsford accepted that Broomfield’s sensitive landscape and limited infrastructure meant only 800 houses should be built around the village, in addition to the massive expansion of the Hospital. Only 135 of those 800 houses have been built so far, so the impact of the remaining 665 have yet to be felt. The Parish Council will be working tirelessly to limit the huge increase in development in the latest proposals to a more reasonable level. If you would like us to keep you informed of our progress, please e-mail ‘Keep Me Informed’ to savebroomfield@broomfieldessex.org or phone the Parish Office on 441660.

Please come to the Save Broomfield Open Day between 3pm and 6pm on Saturday 9th January in the Village Hall, to see what’s being suggested and to have your say. Also please read the leaflet enclosed with this edition of Broomfield Times and keep your eye out for other events and flyers. Whatever your views, please respond to the City Council by Thursday 21st January 2016. Find out how to do this by visiting www.chelmsford.gov.uk, where you can also see full details of all 3 options. If you don’t have access to the internet, please let us know at the Parish Office and we will try to help you get the information you need. John Blake Chair of Planning Committee

Parish Council

In Council Parish Council meetings take place every third Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. in Broomfield Village Hall - members of the public are welcome to attend. There is a ten-minute Public Question Time at the start of the meeting for any questions to be put forward to the Parish Council for consideration. The minutes of all Parish Council meetings can be found on the Broomfield Parish Council website: www.broomfieldessex.org A summary of the main topics discussed at the last three meetings is below, but fuller reports for Civic Amenities and the Village Hall are included separately.

Councillors

Communications

There is still one vacancy so if anyone is interested in joining the Council please speak to the Parish Clerk (see page 5 for contact details).

Youth Council - Councillor Daden and Cllr Garwood, in association with ESSEX Youth workers held an event on 1st October to receive ideas of how the Parish Council can provide youth facilities in the Village. Essex Youth Bus was in attendance which offers a warm place for teenagers to hang out in the winter months, with wi-if, games and TV. The parish council are looking for volunteers to help run the bus and make it a regular feature.

Future facilities in the Parish The Parish Council are pleased to report that they have installed two new picnic benches on Angel Meadow (near to play area) and also two new benches adjacent to the Multi Use Games Area and outdoor fitness equipment. Further facilities are being considered by the various Committees. Two benches are also being considered for Church Green – a consultation exercise is currently underway with local residents (see Civic Amenities report).

Traffic and road safety The north and south Village Gateways are still awaiting final designs and validation which should follow shortly. Observations of the zebra crossing and pelican crossings have been made and faults reported. Park & Ride –it was noted that a pilot scheme will run for one year between Chelmer Valley Park & Ride and the hospital. It will be funded by the hospital and will commence in December 2015 with buses running from 7am to 7pm. The Parish Council are pleased with this announcement as they have been campaigning for this to be implemented for some time.

Snow patrol volunteers needed! Broomfield Parish Council participate in the Essex County Council Winter Salt Bag Scheme. Feedback from residents in previous years indicates that they were very grateful for the clearing and salting of the pavements which considerably eased walking round the village. We provide shovels to clear the snow and salt provided by ECC but the whole operation depends on volunteers. We need you to help others. To volunteer to clear the pavement along your road or the nearest main thoroughfare, please contact the Parish Office or email clerk@broomfieldessex.org.uk. We can then organise distribution of shovels and bags of salt to convenient locations to make the village safely negotiable during winter snow.

Parish Council

New Councillors Sue Hubble I am married to Mike and between us we five children and five grandchildren. We have only lived in Broomfield for one year and already we have made friends, have great neighbours and love the area. Before moving to Broomfield we lived in Wix, Manningtree for ten years where I was the Parish Clerk and councillor. I hope that my past experience will now be a boon to Broomfield Parish Council. I am particularly interested in the outdoors and Civic Amenities seemed a natural choice for me when asked which committees I would like to be part of. With Broomfield’s five greens, allotment site and many footpaths I am not going to be bored for sure! I also agreed to be on the Village Hall Committee and it is “eye watering” to see just how much work goes into running a charity status village hall and at the same time how the secretary and committee have managed to get the cogs running so smoothly. I was

particularly impressed with Broomfield’s 2015 Fun Day. Again, as I was involved with Wix Fayre for many years, I was pleased to be asked to Chair the 2016 Fun Day. It will be difficult to improve on this year’s so any fresh ideas and help from the public will be gratefully received. I am currently on a rota to help out at Stay’ n’ Play on Monday mornings and I also help with the monthly coffee morning (first Wednesday of the month). Please come along for a chat, I would love to meet you. In my working life I was PA to an accountant in the City, with an interest in company secretarial work, payroll and computerised tax returns. I would not have time to work now as I have too many other things to do! I enjoy many crafts such as felt making, sewing, knitting, art and have a City & Guild qualification in Creative Embroidery Textiles. I also like to read. If you see me out and about walking “Bonnie” our Springer Spaniel, stop to say “Hello” and if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask. I may not know the answer but I will know someone who does!

David Howell I would like to introduce myself, my name is David Howell, and I am one of 3 new councillors who has joined the Parish Council in recent months. I am a lifelong resident of Chelmsford, living just outside the parish. I put my name forward so I can give something back to the community, a community that has given me so much joy in the past. Broomfield Parish Council is very much a ‘hands on’ council. It is an honour and a privilege to work with such a dedicated team! I look forward in meeting you in the coming years.

News from Chelmer Valley High School Five small groups of Year 10 students recently took part in their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Challenge. They successfully planned their route and navigated a 24km walk over two days. Setting up camp at Riffhams campsite, the students were able to share their experiences with each other over a camp fire & marshmallows. The groups started from Chelmer Valley with regular checkpoints to make sure they were on the correct route. In the evening they set up tents, cooked dinner on a trangia stove and gathered wood for the camp fire. Day two was the hardest as feet were hurting from the previous day but thankfully there were no blisters. Lydia Turner commented “When arriving at the pub car park to meet our parents, our group were so pleased we didn’t get as lost as we did in the practise. I am definitely contemplating doing the Silver award as it was the best experience I have ever had!” Mr Younan, D of E coordinator said, “After a difficult practice weekend with a loss of navigation skills the students showed great resilience and determination in this qualifying expedition. Well done to everyone for successfully completing this challenge - bring on the silver!”

Operation Christmas Child is the world’s largest children’s Christmas project, run by the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse. They have been sending gift-filled shoeboxes around the world since 1990. Each year at Chelmer Valley we take part in this project by asking students to donate a shoebox of gifts. On 13th November we sent 187 boxes, slightly more than last year! Miss Woolley, Head of Humanities said “A fantastic effort! The students have been very generous with their donations and we hope that this brings some happiness to those less fortunate around the world.”

County Council

From the County Council Leftover Paint Campaign

Summit to put cycling on the map in Essex

Leftover paint is a material banned from general waste in liquid form and treating paint-related waste costs the Essex over £600,000 last year. If we all do our bit and consider our options before throwing leftover paint away, we could potentially make huge savings. Over the coming weeks, the County Council will be raising awareness about how we can cut the costs of treating paint-related waste by disposing of leftover liquid paint in the right way. Leftover paint can be shared and reused, or hardened before disposal. If you want to find out more about hardening liquid paint for safe disposal or donate it to a Community RePaint scheme visit www.ow.ly/RrkZX

Following the growing enthusiasm for cycling, fostered by the Olympic Mountain Biking at Hadleigh in 2012 and last year’s stage 3 of the Tour de France, transport bosses, cycling organisations and council chiefs met in early September to explore the future for cycling in Essex and how to maximize the use of the increasing number of new cycleways in the County. The County Council is now working in partnership with Active Essex and national partners to discuss a new cycling strategy for the County. Cycling is growing as a means to get around our localities better, as a healthy option and as a popular sport. The first thing to do though is to get your view on how cycling in Essex should be developed for the future. To inform the new Essex Cycling Strategy I am asking for your help by completing an online questionnaire. To view the draft strategy and access the questionnaire please visit: www.surveys.essexinsight.org.uk and enter ID 792. Following the consultation, the strategy is likely to be finalised and adopted towards the end of this year.

If you have any problems concerning County Council matters please let me know on 01245 421524 or email cllr.john.aldridge@essex.gov.uk

Public Health urges older residents to take up the offer for shingles immunisation As many of us know, Shingles can be painful and uncomfortable and some people are left with pain lasting for years after the initial rash has healed. It can even be fatal for 1 in 1,000 cases in adults over 70. But did you know that since September 2013, the shingles vaccine has been routinely offered to those of us aged between 70 & 80 years old in a bid to boost immunity against the disease and provide protection against it in later years? This year only those who are aged 70 -72 and 78 -79 on 1st September are eligible. This simple, safe injection is all that is needed to reduce the risk of getting Shingles. Those unlucky enough to get the disease in spite of being vaccinated tend to get less severe symptoms. For further information do please consult the NHS Choices website or check with your GP.

Civic Amenities Report Centenary Wood

5 Greens

One of the two new benches in Centenary Wood had been toppled from its supports. A group of volunteers managed to re-seat the bench and return it to its original position. The autumn colour in the Wood has been particularly striking with the guelder rose leading the way with its bright leaves and red berries. REMEMBER: Centenary Wood is located at the bottom of the David Smith Playing field outside the Village Hall; it can be reached by walking down Angel Lane or by walking down the David Smith field and going through the opening in the hedge.

The annual 5 Greens’ walk took place on Sunday 6th September; 4 Parish Councillors attended along with 9 villagers. The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) carried out a maintenance session on Parsonage Pond. The pond needs some ‘tlc’ on a 3-yearly cycle. One of the ditches on Parsonage Green has been cleared by village volunteers and the ditch by Elm Close will be cleared in early November.

Parish Pathways Partnership (P3) One of the P3 walks (these take place every 3rd Tuesday of the month, leaving from the Church on Church Green at 10:00am) returned via footpath 5 by the side of Scravels; this footpath has recently been brought back into good repair by the County Council. f find us on Facebook

Some councillors met on Church Green to look at various locations for seating to meet the wishes expressed by a number of villagers in the recent Village consultation. The suggestion is to place a bench, for a trial period, by one of the Church gates and to place a circular seat around the Jubilee tree near the War Memorial. There will now be a consultation with the residents around Church Green to consider their views.

Allotments A number of ½ plots are available to rent on the allotment site. We can provide some ¼ plots for any senior citizens, or others, who feel that the upkeep of a ½ plot is just that bit too much. If you wish to put your name down on the waiting list either for a ½ plot or a ¼ plot on the allotment site, then please contact the Parish office. Tim Tranquada

Bulb planting

Impassable for many years, but now on the ‘Definitive Map’, Footpath 5, Broomfield, alongside Scravels, Hollow Lane, has reopened. This is the result of a petition by many in our village with the strong support of our Parish Council.

Popular village butcher dies after return from dream holiday Trevor Keith Robinson July 1960 - October 2015 There was standing room only in the church for the funeral. Everyone in the village knew Trevor and remembers his cheery disposition and his hardworking nature reflecting his love of people.

Trevor was born in Barnet on July 25th 1960, the third child of Patricia and Keith Robinson; he had a sister Leigh and a brother Kevin . Their father passed away when he was very young and Trevor also lost both of his siblings. They were living in Danbury at the time when their mother remarried John Hughes and they moved to Roselawn Farm in Broomfield. Trevor then had a stepbrother Michael and a half brother Adrian. Trevor has been a butcher all his life. On leaving school he started work for a company called Baxter’s in Chelmsford High Street and then went on to work for Key Markets (now Morrisons) in Newland Spring. It was while working here that he met his wife Judith. They started dating and it was not long before they knew it was for keep’s. They married at St Mary’s Church, Broomfield in April 1984 and started married life in Springfield. Trevor was a butchery manager in Wickford and Judith was working at Marconi’s. It was not too long before their first son Shaun was born. Soon afterwards Trevor was given the opportunity to take over the butchers on the Main Road in Broomfield and the family moved into the village of Broomfield in February 1986. Trevor loved being in the shop; he was very much a people person and enjoyed making new friends and he really enjoyed being his own boss. He spent so much time at the shop that Judith often joked about him taking his bed there.

www.broomfieldessex.org

Their family grew as their second son Daniel was born on 29th December 1987. It’s a good job he was late as Trevor had said if he decides to be born in Christmas week Judith would be on her own - he was far too busy in the shop! In June 1988 the family moved to New Road and in June 1990 their family was complete when their third son Carl was born. The next generation of the Robinson’s was started in September 2014 with Shaun’s son Zachery. The family had some great holidays abroad with Florida a family favourite. Once the boys stopped going on holiday with them Judith and Trevor travelled to far off shores, Hong Kong, Thailand, Bali and they had a fantastic holiday in Jamaica just before Trevor died. Trevor contributed a lot to village life and beyond. He readily shared his skills showing college students how to butcher a side of beef and the Scouts how to pluck and prepare a pigeon. Trevor will be missed very much by his family and friends, his workmates in the shop and the whole village.

Brumfelda Broomfield Local History Group Member’s shoulders stooped, necks craned as further ‘walks’ were conducted over Dragonsfoot this summer. Tiling, grey ware, coins, the delicate round handle of a terracotta vase (?) were again in human hands for the first time in over 1500 years! And soil … In a pronounced ‘dip’ in the ground close to the identified archaeological site, muscles flexed as an augur was twisted clockwise into increasingly dense clay (see picture on the right) and then withdrawn to produce soil samples. These will, in due course, be analysed to reveal their constituent parts.

Members are still beguiled by the building foundation images produced earlier this year by Tim Dennis, through the use of his magnetometer. Is it a tile kiln, a high status villa, a third century AD chapel? Intrigued by such prospects, members look for further revelations in the not too distant future! For details of forthcoming ‘Talks’ /gatherings, please refer to the Parish website. Robin Marchal

Speakers for 2016 are as follows: February: The Work of the RNLI Tim Sheppard March: Highs and Lows of a Stuntwoman’s Life - Lucy Allen April: The National Gardens Scheme - Linda Holdaway May: How Forensics Came to Scotland Yard Bob Milne June: My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer - Nick Thomas July: The Thames Barge - Tony Earle Our meetings are held every second Wednesday of each month (excluding August) from 1.30 - 3.30 pm in the Broomfield Village Hall. Following notification from the commercial bus operator to withdraw service 47, ECC carried out its impact assessment, and tendered for replacement of the service. They have now confirmed that Service 47 will continue to be operated by First Essex, under contract to Essex County Council. A revised timetable will operate, with a bus approximately every 50 minutes during the daytime on Monday to Friday between Chelmsford and Broomfield Hospital. The last bus from Chelmsford will be at 1820. The 47 will operate a similar route to the present service, with the exception that it will not serve Beeleigh Link. The section of route via Beeleigh Link will instead be covered by a revised service 72, with a more direct link to Chelmsford city centre via the Army and Navy roundabout. Buses towards Chelmsford will therefore operate in a southbound direction and run via Chelmer Village Way and A138 Chelmer Road. On Saturdays, an hourly service 47 will operate between Chelmsford and Springfield Sainsburys, with the last bus departing Chelmsford at 1750. Service 70

A revised Monday to Friday timetable will be introduced, with journeys re-timed at peak times to improve the punctuality of the service. More details of any service alterations and timetables can be found here: www.firstgroup.com/essex

1st Broomfield Scouts It’s proving to be a busy start to the school year for all sections, as we welcome in new young people. All our sections are currently full and we have a waiting list for Beavers. In April we considered opening a second Beaver Colony as we had 19 children waiting for places from then until January 2016. Unfortunately we had to abandon the proposal as there were insufficient adults willing to become leaders. If you have ever felt like finding out about becoming a leader and running a section of Scouts do get in touch. Yes, it’s a commitment but there is training provided, and you can have as much fun as the children in planning and carrying out weekly meetings/ activities/ visits and camps. We are very lucky as our leader teams are hugely committed and as adventurous as the children that come along each week. So what have we been up to so far? Beavers have learnt about first aid, recycling and global issues as well as how to make a fire and cook on it. They have played games, run around the woods in Danbury, been to Belchamps (a Scout activity centre) for a sleepover, had a Halloween party and got knotting! Cubs have visited the Fire Station, used the hoses, (leaders too!) then learnt about escape plans, fireworks and fire safety.

Cubs visit to the Fire Station They have re-created Hogwarts and been to Harry Potter camp, complete with Quidditch and a Tri-wizard Tournament. They had to find and rescue Dragon Eggs, complete various challenges and even had Owls and Spiders for pets! f find us on Facebook

Scouts making edible rafts with floating marshmallows on them They have also had a Detective night, solving clues to find out who amongst the leaders had a motive for ‘murder’! Cubs are a generous lot so they assembled 13 shoeboxes for Samaritans Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child’ and took them to St Mary’s Church. Oh yes! They got knotted too – making ‘edible rafts’ and floating marshmallows on them. Does that leave anything for Scouts? It certainly does! If you venture up to HQ you will see the Scouts handiwork as they have painted our Garage Doors and a hi-vis line to warn people about the step near the gate. They also organised a jumble sale to raise money for the bigger scout camps. In 2016 the Essex International Jamboree is coming to Chelmsford and although we are local, it still costs quite a lot per person to go. Scouts have also been getting down and greasy doing their Mechanics badge – I did find a car suspension bit in our waste bin one week but it wasn’t from that!! And as if that’s not enough they are camping at Gilwell Park, the home of Scouting and Baden-Powell for Halloween! And of course they’ve done knotting and survival skills – they’re Scouts! So whilst the sections have all been busy what have the leaders been doing? They have been busy attending training days so they can be awarded their ‘Wood Badge’. Having completed their training to be a fully-fledged leader, one was awarded the ‘Minister of Magic’ at Harry Potter Camp! Well done Jo! www.broomfieldessex.org

Thorndon Security Other leaders have re-done their first aid training and some went to the ‘Essex Expo’ at Colchester University to find out about the new badge programme plus lots of other information – we got a nifty T-shirt though, can you tell? Tara (Scout Leader) and I travelled to Wales with Explorer Scouts to do the Incident Hike ‘County Marathon’. This is a hike with bases where we stop to complete a challenge and earn points. We didn’t do very well with the points but we had a lovely day and a half, hillwalking around the Brecon Beacons in glorious sunshine with other District leaders and Explorer Scouts. What are we looking forward to? Well, apart from Christmas, we have our Annual SecondHand Booksale 20th -21st February 2016, where we have an amazing selection of books for sale at incredible prices. Come along and bag a bargain or two. Do give me a call if you are interested in joining us in a leadership role. ruth.broomfieldgsl@gmail.com Ruth Reed GSL 1st Broomfield Scout Group

1st Chelmsford Guides’ Winter Term Wonders 1st Chelmsford Guides have had an action packed winter term. There have been several new members joining our unit, and they are enjoying the many new experiences Girl Guiding can bring. The girls have enjoyed various activities over this term, including; star gazing, learning the names of stars and constellations. The main highlight so far for this term has been our unit’s visit to the Chelmsford Police Museum. During the visit the Girl Guides were given an insight into the workings of the Police Control Room, and toured the Police Museum, completing the tour with a fun quiz on what they had learnt. Now the term is nearly finished, the Girl Guides are enjoying the run up to Christmas, making lots different Christmas crafts and treats. Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year to you all from 1st Chelmsford Guides. Leah Whitwell

Orchard Springs WI WI Centenary Day, Thursday 17th September 2015 Every WI in the country was asked to put on a display, special meeting or entertainment to highlight and commemorate the WIs 100th birthday and its involvement in the community. We decided to plant a centenary rose bush in the garden at the entrance to Broomfield Village Hall, having obtained permission from the charity committee, the plans went ahead.

Jane fulfilled her rose planting with aplomb and the food was thoroughly enjoyed by all. She summed up the memorable day by giving a brief history of important events of each decade but ended by saying that she would leave the hall having made 40 new friends in a happy atmosphere, which was exactly what the WI is all about.

We asked the newest Board of Trustee of the Federation of Essex Women’s Institutes, Jane Bird, if she would attend the planting ceremony. A plaque was ordered and stands proud next to the rose bush. Our thoughts then turned in true WI fashion to the food. It was agreed to lay on a “posh tea” for our members, Broomfield afternoon members and our past members. The committee resplendent as Nippies served all with tea from bone china teapots and made sandwiches, scones and various tray bakes plus fancy cakes depicting the 100 years. The seven tables were adorned with pretty tablecloths including special commemorative WI napkins and laden with matching china tea sets, dainty flowers and plates of food.

Broomfield Then & Now

The King’s Arms, originally known as Crouch House, dates back to 1474 and became a pub in 1765. It was one of the focal points of the village where carts and wagons would pause while their men took some liquid refreshment. The plaster rendering was removed in 1958 to reveal the timber framework which is how it can be seen today.

Library The Innocent Big Knit challenge has come to Broomfield Library and we’re collecting wonderfully created hats to decorate Innocent drinks to benefit Age UK. Mums have been meeting at 10.30am on Wednesdays after our Baby and Toddler Rhymetime for our newly formed knitting group and had lots of fun – including our younger members who might just possibly have preferred playing with the wool? Thanks to all who contributed to our attempt to be in the Guinness World Record 2016 version for promising to read books – we’ll be there

so come and find us in the new book when it’s published! Congratulations to all our schoolchildren who took part in Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge and earned their medal and certificate by telling us about the books they had read over the summer. New Year’s Eve will see the return of our now famous puppet show party – come along at 2pm for a fun packed half hour for all the family. Check out the library page of Broomfield Parish Council’s website and find lots more photos.

Village Hall

Broomfield Village Hall How was your autumn? As exciting as ours we hope!

We’ve hosted two very successful events since the last edition of Broomfield Times. One was our Live Band night where the Waltham Eagles played a super set of the good old classics. The other was our regular feature of Bingo hosted by the Village Hall Committee. Our special thanks go to all of you who turned up - you looked like you were having fun. The money we make from ticket sales, raffle tickets, refreshments (after costs) will always be put to good use to improve the facilities here at the Village Hall. The Village Hall is an independent Charity entirely dependent on the income received from hall hire and the money it raises from its fundraising events. Speaking of which, have you seen our new notice board? It’s finished and we are so pleased with it! It’s through your support that we are able to fund such items. The dishwasher should be in place in the New Year and our next plan is to buy a portable projector and screen which can be hired out for meetings.

So what else is new? We are delighted to welcome Steff Smith to the office team. Steff joins us with a smile on her face and lots of community spirit which will be sure to come in handy in our office!

A date for your diary!!! On Sunday 20th December, 6.30-9pm we will be hosting a Christmas Family Disco and keeping our fingers crossed for a last minute visit from Santa. Tickets are £7.50 for a family of 4 and £2.50 for additional children, grandparents, aunts, uncles…these can be purchased from the Village Hall office. We’ve got a new sub-committee underway for next year’s Village Games. Our annual event will take place on Sunday 10th July, 2016 and we will be having an initial planning meeting on Monday 25th January at 7.30pm. We would really appreciate more helpers to offer ideas and lighten the load for our busy Committee. They are also volunteers so please feel free to come and join us.

Don’t forget our weekly Stay N Play continues on a Monday morning from 9.15-11.15 where you can bring your little ones for a play and catch up with other mums, carers and grandparents. Two new activities have recently started in the Village Hall (more information below) and we are planning more for next year. We are having discussions with a Pilates group as well as a keep fit group who use chairs to exercise. All of these will be open to everyone so if you would like more information please contact the office. A fuller description of the new activities plus some of our regulars is below. f find us on Facebook

FAREWAY Dodgeball comes to Broomfield! Dodgeball is becoming the fastest growing team sport and one of the fastest growing sports around due to its high energy, fast paced nature. A game of elimination, teams try to use the 3 balls on court to ‘hit’ players on the opposing team, catch a ball thrown by the opposition, or force them off the court to get them ‘out’. Since 2005, the UKDBA (UK Dodgeball Association) have been developing and promoting the sport throughout the country. It is played by adults and children of all sporting abilities from recreational ‘come and try’ sessions right up to national and international level. In fact more recently, England became European champions, when they competed against other nations in Vienna. In 2012, the Essex Dodgeball Association was established. Now a total of 10 Under 14 clubs can be found across Essex, who compete in regular tournaments during the school calendar, alongside many schools in Essex hosting weekly Dodgeball clubs. Whilst having fun, you will also begin to see many fitness benefits! Avoiding the ball gives great cardio exercise due to constantly having to dodge balls and cover the court area. Power is increased from repeated throwing at maximal force, improving arm strength . Development of hand-eye co-ordination through repeated attempts at catching the balls, is seen in all children/adults that have participated. Alongside all of this, confidence increases through being part of a team and improved skill development. If dodgeball is the sport for you, then the Essex Dodgeball Association are running a club at the Broomfield Village Hall during school term times on a weekly basis (Thursdays 5-6pm). As part of the club, you will have a chance to take part in matches and tournaments against other teams, and potentially have a chance to represent Essex. All clubs are run in a fun, yet developmental p

Victoria, the consultant who runs the group says “The success of the group really comes down to the members, the community spirit that the group has. People join not knowing anyone but soon make friends with those people who understand their weight loss journey. The group has all the support, tips, ideas and help needed to achieve weight loss dreams, dramatically improve health and change lives and I look forward to welcoming more members in 2016 to help them do the same.” Victoria’s group is held at Broomfield Village Hall every Tuesday at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm. Yoga at Broomfield Village Hall The Thursday morning Yoga class at Broomfield Village Hall has been running for two years now. It’s a lovely venue for Yoga - clean, warm and inviting once an incense stick has been lit and soft music is playing. The class begins with a short talk about what we will be doing and a demonstration of some floor postures. Then people lay on their mats, getting themselves settled and comfortable and with a few sighing breaths, the cares of life soon melt away. For many this is some ‘me’ time, where there are no responsibilities other than to look after number one, the rest of life can wait as the present moment becomes all important. Sometimes a positive reading or a poem sets the tone of the session, then movement follows. The Yoga postures or ‘asanas’ as they are known in the Indian Sanskrit language can be done on the floor in sitting, kneeling or standing positions. The word ‘asana’ means ‘to take a comfortable position in

TRAVEL FASTER AND SMARTER the body that can be maintained’ reminding us of the ancient philosophy of Yoga, to go gently and do no harm to ourselves or others. Some people work on chairs instead of the floor and everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace. Soon it’s time for the final relaxation, when the body rests again and assimilates the posture work. The mind is drawn quietly towards a restful and steady focus once more, perhaps with a breathing meditation, or a positive visualisation. As people leave, they seem to go out looking calmer, more at ease with themselves and the world, relaxed, smiling and with good wishes to all. Yoga is not about tying yourself in knots. I believe Yoga is more about untying the knots that we all get ourselves into from time to time, physically, mentally and emotionally. Yoga is not a religion either. The word Yoga derives from an ancient Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ which means ‘union’ or ‘to join’. Here we are focusing on harmonising and balancing the various aspects of ourselves, our body, mind and spirit. I am a British Wheel of Yoga Teacher with some 32 years of Yoga Experience and teach private classes, work in schools and the NHS providing Gentle Yoga for people with long term health conditions and to those who live with long term pain. I also offer Laughter Yoga sessions for stress management and as a team building activity in the work place.
