London to Canterbury Cycle Challenge Cyclists can take life by the handle bars on Sunday 13 September and enjoy a stunning 65 or 80 mile cycle ride from London’s Greenwich Park to Canterbury, Kent. The UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury, The Children’s Trust, are appealing for cyclists of all abilities to take part. Kim Derry, Events Manager for the event, tells us “the ride really is open to anyone. We have cyclists of all shapes and sizes, male and female, and of all ages, from 16 to 60! By signing up now, everyone has enough time to train, whether you’re a seasoned rider, or still need to go out and get yourself a bike”. Riders meet at The Pavilion Café in Greenwich Park between 8 and 9am, where hot and cold breakfasts will be available. The route, planned and provided by professional Cycling Support Services, has been carefully thought out and is both well signposted and marshalled, with regular refreshment stops. Riders will explore the beautiful Kent countryside including the historic Pilgrim’s Way, before crossing the finish line to a much welcomed sports massage, along with a post-ride party, where friends and family are encouraged to join in the fun.

“The ride is just fantastic, and we’ve had some really amazing feedback from previous years. A lot of riders we see returning each year which is great testimony for us. We always encourage feedback, which means we are able to make continuous improvements to the event. This year stands to be the biggest one yet, and we are aiming for between 3 and 400 hundred sign ups”. For those coming from the Kent area, a coach is available to take cyclists up from Canterbury to the start line in Greenwich Park, a space of which can be booked via The Children’s Trust website. “This year we are working hard to create a great after party and we really encourage friends and family to meet their cycling heroes to celebrate. We’ll have amazing balloon creations, face painting for the children, music, stands &stalls, and a great selection of food including a BBQ, and an on-site café catering for healthier options”.

A Why not become part of The Children’s Trust’s biggest cycle event and sign up now?

Active ageing on your doorstep The Gentle Gym welcomes visitors, so pop along for a cup of tea or coffee to discuss how the easy-to-use equipment can benefit you and if you wish book a FREE TASTER SESSION with a member of the Gentle Gym team.

The aim is to make everyday activities easier to perform, so a better quality of life can be achieved throughout the ageing process. Current member feedback certainly suggests this is being achieved. Sue, aged 57, wanted to improve her health and fitness as she has a lung problem and had put on weight, leading to mobility issues. Sue now reports feeling “more positive about herself and her future and (has) met a whole new set of friends…just do it, it’s really not that scary it will make a real difference”. Dee, a healthy 74 year-old, simply wanted to keep up with her grandchildren and has found benefits to her physical and social life.

Canterbury Festival their winter performances they have agreed to come to Kent to perform a very special gig just for the Canterbury Festival!

The Canterbury Festival returns this October for two weeks crammed with exciting events throughout the city. The Cathedral, the historic epicentre of our city, will not only be hosting a plethora of fantastic classical concerts including a performance by Ian Bostridge with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, but it will also transform itself into a cinema for two evening of Canterbury on Film. Eighty years ago T.S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral received its world première performance as part of the Canterbury Festival. In 1951 it was adapted into a film that includes the voice of T.S. Eliot. Where better to watch this film than in the very location where the dark deeds of its plot took place in 1170? There are two more anniversaries being celebrated during this year’s Festival. 2015 marks 25 years of Texas, in which time they have sold over 38 million albums, toured across the world and received an Ivor Novello Award. To mark this anniversary, they have already performed a sold-out Spring Tour, and have further dates in December in London, Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow. But, in advance of

A

8

It will also be the 30th anniversary of MozART Group. A surprise sellout hit of the Festival in 2012, MozART Group combine virtuosic performances with comedic genius and brilliantly ridiculous scenarios. Flying into the UK for one night only, they will have you chortling to Tchaikovsky, bursting a blood vessel to Bach and a great night is guaranteed. The Festival is delighted to announce that in mid June it reached the Arts Council’s Catalyst Scheme target. This means that the fabulous Festival Spiegeltent will be returning to Canterbury again this year. For two weeks it will host multiple events every day. Whilst there are too many amazing acts to list here, highlights include the hilarious Austentatious, who will perform an entirely improvised comedy play in the style of Jane Austen (no two shows are the same; previous show titles include Strictly Come Darcy and Tents and Tent Stability), a cabaret inspired by Alfred Hitchcock entitled Hitch, an evening of Tango performed by Tangomotion (as seen on Strictly Come Dancing), an intimate gig with internationally acclaimed comedian Rich Hall, and of course a whole week of family friendly shows including the return of Baby Loves Disco.

Canterbury Festival will take place from 17-31 October 2015 in venues across Canterbury, including music, performance, talks, science, visual arts and walks. The full programme of events will be available on the website www.canterburyfestival.co.uk from Monday 13 July, or a paper copy can be requested via the Festival Office on 01227 452853. Canterbury Rugby World Cup weekend Canterbury start their build up to this year’s Rugby World Cup with a special NatWest Force weekend on June 27th and 28th. It will be two days of work and pleasure for volunteers to help the club get ready for the big event which starts in September. Canterbury are planning a series of events before and during the competition and aim to become the focal point for fans to view all the big games. In return for their skills and their labour the working teams will have breakfast and lunch provided, barbecues, music, a subsidised bar and a social evening for all the family. There will be facilities for families to camp put over the weekend. Club chairman Jonathan Marsh says this is very much a family event and he is looking for people to assist with painting, decorating and generally tidying up. Additionally, anybody in the building trade is very much sought after as there are specific skilled jobs that need doing. With backing from NatWest, who are in partnership with England rugby, the weekends are being rolled out at clubs across the country. Volunteers for the Canterbury weekend can register their interest from the link on the club web site home page: www.cantrugby.co.uk

Club Canterbury win top RFU award For the second year in succession Canterbury have won one of the game’s top club awards. The city club have been named as winners of the RFU Community Engagement Award in a ceremony at Twickenham The national title goes to the club for its success in forging links with schools, colleges, universities, businesses, community groups and people that traditionally have had little contact with the game. Canterbury chairman Jonathan Marsh said: “For the Club to win a National Award two years running shows that all our efforts continue to be recognised at the highest level of the game and is due to the dedication and hard work of all our players, coaches, volunteers, supporters and sponsors. “This particular award underpins our vision to be an inclusive community club working with the community to deliver sport to as wide an audience as possible and in this World Cup year we hope our continued networking will encourage more people to visit and engage with the Club.” The award follows last year’s success when Canterbury won the Club Management title. Canterbury were nominated in an unprecedented five categories in this year’s annual RFU Presidents awards.

Credit Unions for all walks of life I’m going to bet that you’re only vaguely aware of the Credit Union movement in the UK; bet you have very little idea of the sorts of savings, loans or current account products your local Credit Union offers; but I’d go so far as to bet that you casually assume they’re not applicable to you. Am I right? But here’s the thing: not only are Credit Unions available to everyone, from all walks of life, they are dependent on savers and borrowers just like you, from all walks of life. I’m betting again, that Credit Unions will be associated in your mind with lending to people on low incomes, and this time you’re right, and that’s what’s special about them…they’re willing to lend to those in our communities who have a troubled credit history, or a patchwork of income from benefits and tax credits, or who for whatever reason other lenders won’t touch. But to provide their safe, ethical and responsible lending services to those who might otherwise resort to extortionate payday lenders, the Credit Unions need to be financially sustainable which means they need a steady income of their own, from the interest they charge on loans to…yup, everyone from all walks of life. They want and need to lend to the better-off sections of our communities, those who could take a loan from any supermarket, online or high-street lender they like. To put it simply, Credit Unions need good borrowers to support their business of supporting otherwise financially excluded borrowers. Their business needs to balance out the poor credit risk customers with some better credit risk ones. Another thing that’s special about Credit Unions is they are non-profit making and are run by volunteer boards of Directors. Since they’re not

Please mention

paying shareholder returns or bankers’ bonuses they are run on a low cost base and can charge interest rates comparable, and often lower, than commercial lenders. So not only do they want you and need you, people from all walks of life, they can also reward you with loans at competitive rates. When you also realise they don’t charge upfront fees or have any hidden costs or early repayment fees, why wouldn’t you consider them next time you want to treat yourself to a new kitchen, car or holiday? I’ll also go right out on a limb and bet that a good number of you, when you stop to think about it, would be pleased to take a loan from an organisation set up to serve your local community. I hope I’m right because everyone needs access to fair money…although I’d never bet with it.

Fantasy cupcake flowers Step-by-step cupcake fantasy flowers; tips on using metallic paints and a super whooper offer.

• Mexican paste works best for these – you can either use it white or add colour (paste colours are most suitable). Alternatively, once dry you can paint with metallic paints. • Roll your Mexican paste very thinly, when you think it’s thin enough, roll again to make sure. • Leave the paste uncovered to firm slightly whilst you place the cutters in your Jem roller pad and rub a tiny smear of petal base over the cutters. • Lay your paste over the cutter, roll with your rolling pin, run your finger around the edge of the cutter to ensure a clean cut and then remove the excess paste.

Sam Northeast signs long-term contract extension Kent Cricket is delighted to announce that Sam Northeast has signed a long-term contract extension. The 25-year-old Ashford-born batsman is the top scorer in the county in the 2015 NatWest T20 Blast with 520 runs in nine matches, helping Kent to top spot in the South Group. In the LV= County Championship, he has scored 672 runs at an average of 44.8 with six 50s in eight matches to date. Northeast said: “I am delighted to commit my future to the club. I’m Kent born and bred and it’s such an exciting time for Kent Cricket with the group of players we have and the talent coming through from our Academy. “I’ve really enjoyed my cricket and the challenge of captaincy this summer so there was never any thought of going elsewhere. “With our return to a new-look County Ground, Beckenham and the continuing redevelopment of The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, the future is bright at Kent and I want to be a part of that.” Northeast took on the on-field captaincy in May 2015 after club captain Rob Key handed over the reins. Kent Cricket CEO Jamie Clifford said: “We are delighted to agree terms with Sam. His form this year in all forms of the game has been

Home and away at The Beaney A new exhibition at the Beaney in Canterbury brings together two bodies of work by British artists from the second half of the 1960s that look very different but may have more in common than first appears. General Dynamic F.U.N is one of Eduardo Paolozzi’s great print series, fusing clashing images culled from magazines to create bold provocative collages. The initial celebration of a new fantasy world of advertising and technology gives way to darker undertones of excess, and the sinister impact of the United States, which at the time was embroiled in a war in Vietnam to which Paolozzi and many others were deeply opposed.

During the same years, Tony Ray-Jones was drawing on the example of the new American photography that he had absorbed during a protracted stay (returning home in 1965). He celebrated and captured the people, rituals and places (notably coastal resorts in the southeast, such as Broadstairs and Margate) that provided an authentic, quirky alternative to an increasingly uniform, Americanised world. Beneath the contrast between colourful collages and black and white photographs is a discernible shared anxiety about the transatlantic relationship and a common feel for surreal juxtaposition. ‘Home and Away’ is in the Special Exhibitions Room at the Beaney from Saturday 9 May to Sunday 23 August. Running alongside the exhibition are activities and talks exploring the themes of ‘home’ and ‘away’ as part of the University of Kent’s 50th anniversary celebrations. There is no admission fee, but visitors are asked to pay what they can, with contributions going towards future special exhibitions at the Beaney.

The Kent Disability League The Kent Disability League began in the 2005/2006 season to create opportunities for footballers with varying impairments and levels of ability to compete in the same environment, providing regular competitive and fun football playing opportunities for children and adults. Prior to this there were only a handful of disability teams across the county who played friendly games of in regional competitions.

The KD League soon established itself and grew at a phenomenal rate, partly in response to the demand for more localised competition. Seven years on, there are now over 50 small sided teams regularly taking part in the Kent DL with over 300 adult and almost 200 junior, male and female, players taking part, making it the largest county disability league in the country. The clubs which compete in the Kent DL play pan-disability football, where teams consist of players with varied physical disabilities, which can include cerebral palsy, visual Impairments, deaf, Down’s syndrome and amputees, alongside players with various learning disabilities. All the divisions encourage mixed participation, male and female, where 18

Please mention

the Kent DL became the first to run mixed adult disability football. Clubs competing include Gillingham, Charlton Athletic, Canterbury City, Bromley Green Valiants, Sheppey United, Maidstone United, Folkestone United, Thanet Galaxy, Deal All Stars, Milton & Fulston Spiders, Swanscombe Tigers, RMB United, Anchorian Equals and BCD. The Kent DL was originally run and administered by the Kent FA; however, all Kent DL operations are now the responsibility of the new league committee (volunteers), which include

representatives from various clubs within the Kent DL. Towards the end of the 2014-2015 season the Kent Disability League was selected as the South East Region FA & McDonalds Charter Standard League of The Year 2015. Unlike other county football leagues and divisions, where clubs compete in home and away fixtures, due to the distances between the Kent DL clubs, fixtures are played as monthly tournaments throughout the football season at one venue for adult teams and another venue for juniors. Fixtures are played in a round-robin short match format, with varied divisions from under 11s through to under 13s, under 16s and up to adults. Magazine when responding to advertisements

The Forgotten C Ross Llewellyn writes about the forgotten mining industry in Kent‌ I was born and brought up in Hersden and went to Hersden Primary and Sturry Secondary, as it was then. I worked at Chislet until its closure in July 1969, apart from a four-year spell as a merchant seaman, and worked at Tilmanstone Colliery until its closure in 1986. I believe strongly that the colliery and its miners should not be forgotten. Many men were injured in the 51 years of its existence 59 killed - more than one a year. The slag heaps have now gone and the shafts filled, the only thing left is the old pump house on the marshes. Hersden was built to house the miners of the nearby colliery, Chislet, which at its peak employed up to 1600 men. However, very few people remember this. I gave a presentation to the local Guides and not one of them knew of its existence and history, despite it being only two miles down the road. It was a German company who first showed an interest in coal in this area. Sinking had already taken place in the Dover area so

22

they were keen to search and put down six bore holes in 1911, discovering workable seams at 1500ft. However, with the outbreak of the First World War, all German personnel were removed and in November of that year the company reformed as The Chislet Colliery Co. It wasn’t until 1918 that the sinking reached the coal seam and production started; by 1923 the colliery was producing 223,733 tonnes but from that period until 1929 things had gone downhill and the colliery was in financial difficulties. New management were then brought in and things improved for the colliery and the men who enjoyed better welfare and conditions.

1929 A new Village Many of the men were having to travel from Ramsgate and Margate, so after many false starts a village of 300 houses were built for the growing workforce. As it was being built, the village was called Chislet Colliery Village, but on

Colliery being completed, to avoid confusion with the nearby village of Chislet, it was renamed Hersden. Men were arriving from all corners of the country looking for work: men from the North, Scotland, Somerset and from Wales, which brought my father to Kent. He arrived at Chislet Halt which is situated down in the marshes. It was a cold, foggy November day as he got of the train and he wasn’t keen to stay, but in fact he spent the rest of his life here. In 1947 came nationalisation and the pit was modernised. I remember the men talking about this - men who had worked under the old system - and they all said the same thing: nothing had changed. It was still the same bosses, still the same wages and they still got as black. I don’t know what they expected, but certainly safety improved. Quite a lot talked about prejudices against the miners. They looked a rough lot, traipsing around the towns and villages in their boots and dirty clothes. In the early years there were no on-site bath houses so they had to travel home in their black. And there were problems finding accommodation. Signs went up in the towns and villages stating “no miners”, and some of the shops sold what they called “miner’s bacon” offcuts and scraps. I don’t know why, because the men were earning reasonable wages and could afford decent food.

Accents With the miners coming from all corners of the country there were many accents - from Wales, Scotland, The North and Somerset. One of my teachers, who started at the new school in Hersden in 1929, spoke of her difficulty in understanding some of her pupils with their different accents. The younger children soon lost theirs, but older residents kept them for their lifetime, my mother and father amongst them. It was most notable to me if I had to speak to one of them on the phone for some reason, or if two Scots lads got together they would suddenly speak broad Scots. L Please mention

The Forgotten Colliery, continued…

Traditions

Militancy

It wasn’t long before the miners started to introduce their interests and traditions into the area all their sporting activity and music and choirs. The Welsh brought their rugby and choirs, which is how my father ended up in Kent. He was brought by the manager to play rugby. He told me he arrived at Chislet Halt in the November; the place was thick with fog, Chislet Halt being down near the marshes. He told me when he stepped off the train he said to himself, “I’m not staying here”, but in fact he spent the rest of his life here. The Bands mostly came from the North. They soon became established in football leagues in the area and they also brought their pigeons, whippets and greyhounds. It wasn’t long before they became established in most sporting activity in Kent.

Quite a few of the men who came to Kent came because they had been blacklisted in other areas because of disputes with other owners, so it was no surprise when they came up against bad working practice and wage disputes that they knew how to organise the workforce. The 1920s was a bad period with many shut-downs and strikes in Kent; things settled down in the 1930s without any prolonged disputes. 1972 brought the next shut-down for any length of time and then of course 1984. One of the things that anger a Kent miner is whenever anything is mentioned by the media, particularly TV, about the Kent mines, they show something to do with the 1984 strike, not the millions of tons of coal produced over almost 100 years, or the hundreds of miners killed in its production.

Growing Up

Culture The culture and activities in the early years of the village was managed by the colliery manager; I’m not sure of the other collieries but he was involved in most of the activities and controlled a lot of what went on whether it was the adults or the children. We were never short of parties or organised concerts and films. He controlled the welfare club and its committees. He was the Big Boss and if any of us children got up to some serious mischief, our father would be called into his office and get a rollicking and told to control his child.

Personally, I think I grew up in a privileged position. I was a year old when the war started, so I only remember the later stages. I remember the air-raid shelters: ours was at the bottom of our garden and when it rained it flooded and we had to make our way to the communal shelter at the bottom of our road. We were never frightened of the war; I suppose we thought it was just a way of life - we had not known anything different. We went to school and at times had to use the school shelter but looking back I thought we had a very privileged lifestyle. We were surrounded by woods and fields

which became our playground. We swam and fished in the river and lakes and played on the rock tips and around the pit top until we were chased off. I am not at all envious of today’s children in that respect, with their restrictions because of today’s unsafe society.

End of mining In my case, Chislet closed down in July 1969 after we lost the fight to keep it open. Looking back, we now realise we were never going to win. The Coal Board were determined to close one and use the manpower to man up the other three. No redundancies were offered. A few men tried to claim it but it was a take-itor-leave-it attitude from the Coal Board, so the only choice we had was which pit to go to. It was strange for us living in the village of Hersden and having to catch a bus at 5.30am. But I actually worked longer at Tilmanstone than I did at Chislet. The ending of mining in Kent came about when the last pit Betteshanger closed in 1989 .

The Woodland Trust The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, championing native woods and trees. It operates in an environment where tree disease, inappropriate development and changes in land use have reduced woodland cover in the UK to a meagre 13% compared to 37%in the rest of the EU. The Trust gives a voice to woods and trees, and tries to protect them where current planning law does not. There are 69 ancient woodlands currently under threat in Kent, and 21 have been lost in the last 10 years. Just one example of this is Oaken Wood. Although an important habitat for pipistrelle bats, dormice, reptiles, 37 species of bird and a range of plants, in July 2013 permission was granted for Gallaghers to quarry

the area. 79 acres of precious ancient woodland was lost as a result. The Trust campaigns for better protection for ancient woodland, andit hopes thatpeople will think twice before they are mindlessly destroyed. Only 12% of Kent’s population live within 500m of a 2 hectare woodland and it suffers a below average woodland cover. The Trust believes that communities and families should be able to experience woods and trees as part of their everyday life, and aims to increase these figures. In fact it has recently sent 7,230 trees to schools in the Kent area as part of its free community tree packs scheme. This will enable schools and groups to create their own woodland, giving the next generation a personal connection to

If you want to explore woods in your area, here are a few recommendations: Hucking Estate, Hollingbourne (left) Hucking Estate is a mix of ancient woodland, and open grassland, nestled in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is scattered with archaeological remains, wonderful walks, and breathtaking views. Dering Wood, Pluckley (above) Saved from development in the late 1990s, Dering Wood is home to more than 25 species of butterfly and rare beetles and renowned for its stunning display of bluebells and wood anemones. Denge and Pennypot woods, near Chartham This ancient semi-natural woodland is home to many invertebrates, including the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly. It is perfect for scenic dog walks during the summer months.

Spring has sprung early for Wingham Well Spring Water Canterbury-based Wingham Well Spring Water, which supplies water coolers to customers across Kenton a ‘free-loan, no contract’ basis has reported that Kentish residents must be amongst the healthiest in the country. More water has been sold this January than ever before in the first month of the year. Rob Walker, managing director of the company, says: “Water isn’t the only way to stay hydrated; but it has to be one of the best ways. Spring water is natural and, like all water, it’s calorie free and kind to teeth. Whether you’re buying for your workplace or your home, we know from research that having water available in a cooler encourages people to drink more. We provide healthy hydration at its best and it’s clear that a lot of people across the county want to start the year with good health”. Rob Walker, who has worked in the water industry for 18 years, runs the independent firm together with his wife Jan and their dedicated team who carry out filling and deliveries – Andrew, Tom and Ian.. The firm sources its delicious Spring Water from a borehole on the site of a watercress farm that was established over three centuries ago. They’re hoping that even more people in Kent will realise the benefits of having cooling spring water available as spring turns into summer. The company serves customers across the whole of Kent. Rob adds: “Some of our customers have been with us for 18 years, since

A

we were established. I know all about their children and their businesses, and they know all about us and our children. Most importantly, customers love the fact that we loan the bottled water coolers free of charge and they aren’t tied into a contract. We do also supply plumbed in water dispenser that are mains-fed. “This is truly a personal, family run business. I make sure I visit as many customers as possible. Customers like the fact that they know us and love the terms under which we operate which means they aren’t tied to a long term contract”. The company provides bottled and point-ofuse (POU) coolers to a range of business and domestic customers including offices, schools, building contractors and private homes.

Wingham Well Spring Water is a member of British Bottled Water Producers which is a network for small and medium sized water producers across the UK. A Very Brown Hedge Indeed! Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice.
