Name change marks game change for Betteshanger A day of activities celebrated the change to Betteshanger Country Park as the new name for Fowlmead Country Park, on Saturday 18 July
“A big thank you must go to the local community and all those organisations who have been working with the team at Hadlow Group in order to make this change possible.
Visitors had the chance to take part in a series of art workshops celebrating the mining heritage of the East Kent coalfield, and the flora, fauna and wildlife that has colonised the area since Betteshanger Collier was closed.
“The response from local residents has been hugely positive and there is a lot of excitement about the future development of the site. This marks an important step on the journey to delivering the vision we share wit the local community for the area.”
Betteshanger Country Park, incorporating a visitor centre, the Kent Mining Museum and green energy centre, is an integral part of the £40m Betteshanger Sustainable Parks projects.
Some of the drawings created by the visitors in the art workshops will be used to decorate the hoardings for visitor centre when erected.
Richard Morsley, Director of Betteshanger Sustainable Parks, said: “It is great to see the new name in place, recognising the Park’s important mining heritage.

To regenerate the community of Betteshanger and surrounding area, the Country Park will sit alongside the development of office space and micro-business incubation units, training and development, further and higher education on the Enterprise Park.

The members have full use of the only cabin that is open on Deal Pier. The cabin provides club members with shelter and the use of its facilities - lockers, hot and cold running water, kettle, microwave etc. As the club is affiliated to the Angling Trust it allows members to participate with third party insurance whilst fishing in the club competitions. Details and membership renewal forms are available from Pleasure Angling and Channel Angling, Deal’s two bait and tackle shops.

Puppy walking: £5,100
Early training: £14,500
• Aged seven weeks , guide dog puppies are placed with a volunteer for around 10 to 12 months of puppy walking training.
• Trainee guide dogs leave their puppy walker aged about 14 months to start work at one of our four national training schools .
• Puppy walkers house-train our pups and teach them basic obedience commands.
• Our highly qualified Guide Dog Trainers work with a dog for around 19 weeks to develop its basic guiding skills. L
• We make sure that our puppies get out and about to experience lots of busy environments, so that they become familiar with the distractions they may encounter as a qualified guide dog. • In 2013, more than 3,500 volunteer puppy walkers devoted their time, love and energy to provide a home and training to one of our guide dog puppies.

• There are more than 4,800 guide dog owners in the UK. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, they only have to pay 50p to start a new life with their guide dog.
• Every person and dog is unique, so matching a guide dog to an owner is a complex and carefully managed process. Our trainers take into account a person’s needs – walking speed, height and lifestyle – and look for a dog that will be a good match. • We aim to provide new guide dog owners with a dog within six months of their application, and existing guide dog owners within three months.
Partnership training: £3,300 • Once we have successfully matched a prospective guide dog owner with their ideal partner, one of our Guide Dog Mobility Instructors spends around five weeks training client and dog together. • We trained more than 819 new guide dog partnerships in 2013.

Formed in 1904, the Deal and District Angling Association comprised of a group of fishers who wished to hold competitions from Deal Pier, the beach and boats. At their first AGM they boasted a membership of 165 and elected Percy Edgar as their chairman. Mr Edgar was also owner of the sprat canning factory at north Deal.

With a growing membership of 217 in 1906 they changed the club’s name to Deal and Walmer Angling Association. The thriving society held many Dinners, Dances, Smoking Lectures and Concerts to raise funds. These were very popular and it was noticed in one of the monthly meetings that the hire of the Royal Marines Band for an event was £3.0s.6d (approx £3.3p). The club had access to a cabin on the pavilion end of the pier where members could bait-up and hang their coats. This was kept clean by the association’s cabin steward. Unfortunately the cabin was destroyed in gales and the anglers had to wait for another to be rebuilt. By 1911, the membership had exceeded 400 with many of the anglers coming from London and the Home Counties. The amount that were fishing in the angling festivals and competitions warranted the club to request that the South Eastern Railway reduce fares and alter timetables to accommodate their members travelling arrangements. All of the festivals were held as a three day event and 50 boats were recorded as being launched from the beach in the 1911 boat festival. These competitions were not only for the men, the association also held an annual pier festival for women. The women’s event always attracted over 50 female competitors. Fishing in those days was not as high tech as it is for the modern day angler. Rods were normally made from heavy greenheart wood L

The reels, or winches as they were known by, were also made from walnut. These ‘star back centre-pin reels’ were so called because of the brass framework that held the reel secure to the rod. With thick cutyhunk line the outfit was not meant to be cast any distance. Dropping over the side of the boat or pier would suffice. During the First World War, membership declined although the association still tried to maintain the clubs function and competitions. In 1916 they put a fishing match on Deal Pier for wounded service men who were convalescing. This was noted as the first of its kind held around the English Coast; and even brought

the comments of King George V, expressing his appreciation of the Association’s efforts. As the competition progressed, the invaliding soldiers were inundated with gifts of cigarettes, tobacco, sausage rolls and meat pies. The proprietor of the Clarendon Hotel donated a cask of ginger wine to fortify the men against the chilly northerly wind. Of the 150 men who fished only 43 managed to catch fish, which comprised of dogfish, congers, codling, soles and pouting. The Deal and Walmer Angling Association made sure that all of the competitors won a prize. The winner, Private Borthwick, with 2lb 13oz was presented with the main prize by Lady Haig and General Neville White.

Credit Unions for all walks of life I’m going to bet that you’re only vaguely aware of the Credit Union movement in the UK; bet you have very little idea of the sorts of savings, loans or current account products your local Credit Union offers; but I’d go so far as to bet that you casually assume they’re not applicable to you. Am I right? But here’s the thing: not only are Credit Unions available to everyone, from all walks of life, they are dependent on savers and borrowers just like you, from all walks of life. I’m betting again, that Credit Unions will be associated in your mind with lending to people on low incomes, and this time you’re right, and that’s what’s special about them…they’re willing to lend to those in our communities who have a troubled credit history, or a patchwork of income from benefits and tax credits, or who for whatever reason other lenders won’t touch. But to provide their safe, ethical and responsible lending services to those who might otherwise resort to extortionate payday lenders, the Credit Unions need to be financially sustainable which means they need a steady income of their own, from the interest they charge on loans to…yup, everyone from all walks of life. They want and need to lend to the better-off sections of our communities, those who could take a loan from any supermarket, online or high-street lender they like. To put it simply, Credit Unions need good borrowers to support their business of supporting otherwise financially excluded borrowers. Their business needs to balance out the poor credit risk customers with some better credit risk ones. Another thing that’s special about Credit Unions is they are non-profit making and are run by volunteer boards of Directors. Since they’re not
Please mention
paying shareholder returns or bankers’ bonuses they are run on a low cost base and can charge interest rates comparable, and often lower, than commercial lenders. So not only do they want you and need you, people from all walks of life, they can also reward you with loans at competitive rates. When you also realise they don’t charge upfront fees or have any hidden costs or early repayment fees, why wouldn’t you consider them next time you want to treat yourself to a new kitchen, car or holiday? I’ll also go right out on a limb and bet that a good number of you, when you stop to think about it, would be pleased to take a loan from an organisation set up to serve your local community. I hope I’m right because everyone needs access to fair money…although I’d never bet with it.

Packed to the gunnels with exhibits and exhibitions the Deal Maritime and Local History Museum has something for everyone, from a family day out with free quiz and pirate hat for children to a quiet, solitary wander and cup of tea in the boatyard. Four special exhibitions are on offer alongside the permanent displays this season that run until 31st October. In the main gallery, hung above the Saxon King, the last Deal galley, is this year’s Royal Marines’ exhibition ‘Life at the Deal barracks.’ A cross section of photographs and information is on display from early 19th century views of the buildings including the barracks, cookhouse and chapel. Large 1920s Ordnance Survey maps show in detail the many facilities needed to maintain barrack life from the shoemaker and tailor to the prison and stables. There are group photographs of the young lads of the Royal Marines Light Infantry and the later young Royal Marines and Bandsmen at work, in training on the playing fields, and in the ever popular pantomimes.

Some of the front pages of important stories covered by the paper are also on show including the sad loss of the Herald of Free Enterprise and the IRA bombing at the Deal Barracks. The main ground floor gallery of the museum tells the story of the maritime history of the area, the fishermen, lifeboat men and pilots who battled with the sea. There are artefacts found in wrecks and dives, scrimshaw, old lifebelts and model ships.
