Museum seeks miners’ memories The Kent Mining Museum is inviting anyone who worked at the county’s collieries or lived in the surrounding communities to share their memories of times gone by. Betteshanger Sustainable Parks has secured a Heritage Lottery Fund development grant to bring forward the plans for the Kent Mining Museum, which is due to open in 2017. The museum will be at the heart of the new visitor centre at Betteshanger Country Park, near Deal, which is opening next year. Sarah Brown, Museum and Heritage Manager, said: “We’re in the process of developing the Kent Mining Museum but we need local people’s help. Whether it’s a story of working in the mines, travelling to and from them, childhood memories or simply visiting the country park, we want to hear from everyone.

A

“We have had people talking about the 4.30am starts; arriving at Tilmanstone and rushing to the canteen to grab a cup of tea or a shilling screw of tobacco in preparation for the shift ahead; a bottle of ‘wonderful cold milk’ at the end of the day; dusting coal dust off the windowsill and even children playing on the tip and avoiding the security guard. “We’re keen to collect as many memories as possible so would urge people to visit the website so we can preserve this important part of Kent’s history.”

Journal of a boatman For over forty years, David Chamberlain strove to make a living as a boatman on the beaches of Deal and Walmer; the majority of this time in his fishing boat, the Morning Haze. In his book Deal and Walmer’s Piscatorial Past, David describes the hardships which went hand in hand with working from the foreshore. This included the storms and physical labour that the boatmen had to endure, just to launch their craft from the ever changing contours of the pebble and shingle beach. Along with the many photographs, the reader gets, not only a taste of the sea, but also an appreciation that being a boatman is not the ideal life that many imagine it to be. Deal and Walmer’s Piscatorial Past captures the very essence of life fishing the waters off Deal in a small vessel; along with detailing the late twentieth century local history of, what is now, a fading profession.

Walmer Cricket Club Our season has now drawn to a close; the highlight being our match against the MCC to celebrate our 150th anniversary. Our 1st & 2nd XI both enjoyed good starts to the season, but were found wanting in the latter stages of their league campaigns finishing 6th and 3rd respectively. Our Cricket week in August was a huge success, as were a number of Charity events that we staged, including raising over £1000 for “Breakthrough Breast Cancer”, and more recently Club Member, Rod Charge hosting a MacMillan Coffee morning that raised a similar amount. Having received Planning Permission for an extension to our Clubhouse, and improvements to our changing facilities we are now concentrating on raising funds to complete the project which will enhance things not only for our players, but also for those from the local community that hire the clubhouse for parties and wedding receptions etc. As the days get shorter, we are already looking forward to next summer, and consulting with our team of ECB qualified coaches on a revamp of our junior section which will be launched early in the new year. Where have all the fishing boats gone? At the beginning of the 1960s, a Deal boatman’s licence could be obtained from Deal pier master, Captain Harris. Although there were new builds, many of the pleasure boats were old and some had been converted from sail to motor. The skills of Deal boatmen were renowned and the only accidents that happened, in the many boats that plied for hire, were the occasional soaking to their clientele. However, in August 1966, the pleasure boat Dalwin was sunk off Cornwall with the loss of 31 lives, and this would affect the way these boats were licensed from then on. The shock waves of this disaster carried throughout Britain and the Government requested that local seaside councils take another look at their responsibilities to the

general public and the licensing of boatmen and their vessels. Deal Council insisted that all boatmen took a test and received a Board of Trade certificate. These verbal tests were carried out at the old Quarter Deck building with a B.O.T examiner in charge. This licence was duly issued allowing the skipper to take afloat 250 passengers … but only three miles out to sea. The Council also expected all boats that wished to take fare paying passengers should be seaworthy and issued a yellow plastic plaque which was screwed to the bow of the craft for the public to view. When the Board of Trade was dissolved, and new boatmen required a licence, the Council asked that the Deal & Walmer Inshore Fishermans Association provide a test

for the prospective applicants. This was carried out with the help of three full time boatmen, an observer and an officer from the Council’s foreshore department. Everybody was happy and the reputation of boatmen and safety of passengers was one hundred percent. However, the three mile licence was a bone of contention. This argument was brought up at a council meeting in the Town Hall and the boatmen managed to temporary convince the council that they had a ten mile from land dispensation. Eventually the Government tightened the screws and insisted that the boats carried a vast amount of safety equipment onboard and a professional survey be carried out on the vessels plying for hire. The boatmen were to have a licence issued from a national governing body which would be relevant to all English ports.

Deal

Magazine

The argument of the Deal boatmen was that, as they operated from the beach, their crafts were smaller than those from harbours and did not have the room to stow the extra equipment and life rafts. Their needs did not come into the equation and many were priced out of making it a viable business proposition. The many angling boats, that were once a familiar sight along the beach, started to disappear, and at this time of writing there is only one plying for hire. Safety is not only paramount but, in this day and age, it is imperative. However, those halcyon days that brought many happy memories to thousands of boat anglers who had fished from Deal’s piscatorial paradise … are just memories. David Chamberlain

It is remembered fondly by many ex cadets who are always keen to discuss their wonderful experiences and memories with the current cadets at public events.

Although the uniform and drill may have remained the same from the start, the Cadets Organisation has seen many changes over the years. Flying and gliding in real air craft are still fantastic activities undertaken and now cadets also have access to a great flight simulator system. Using modern technology they can

Your guide to a happier If you want to know how much money you need in retirement, whether you will run out of money, or whether you will be able to afford to do your ‘Bucket List’, you need to gain clarity on your future. Your required income will be different to anyone else’s, because your life is different to anyone else’s. Rather than accepting the hand that you are dealt in retirement, like so many people do, make sure you know how much money you need in retirement, and how you can best generate it from the money you already have. This is best achieved by carrying out a few exercises. The first is to create a retirement budget, so you know what your essential and your luxury expenditure will be in retirement. Only once you know what your monthly expenditure currently is, therefore what it will be, can you plan for it. Secondly, you need a Lifetime Cash Flow Forecast to tell you whether you have accumulated enough or are saving a sufficient sum to deliver that required income when you plan to retire. This could be a basic spread sheet that you put together yourself, a tool you find online or a more detailed analysis from a Financial Planner. As long as you have factored in inflation, realistic growth rates and tax, you are off to a pretty good start. The more sophisticated you go though, the more accurate the plan is likely to be and the more different scenarios you can model.

Mark Daighton (MA OXON) (

Private Tutor in Mathematics

The money you have saved for your retirement, whether it is currently in a pension, savings account, property or NISAs needs to deliver you the best return possible for a level of risk that you are comfortable with. Some people will say that they won’t take any risk; the problem is there is no such thing. If you put your money into a bank account, your capital is (almost) guaranteed not to go down, but this is not ‘no risk’. If you are getting 2% interest and inflation is 3%, your money is falling by 1% a year in real term, i.e. what you can actually buy with it. Join our Dream Retirement™ community for FREE and get instant access to our Risk vs Reward Help Guides Most people take too much risk with their investment choices because they do not spread the investments diversely enough. Understand your own tolerance to risk and then use the asset allocation and the spread of the investments to generate you the best returns possible for that level of risk. Don’t have all your eggs in one basket, so make sure you don’t just have property, shares or cash, as otherwise you will get a nasty shock in the future.

Minimise tax through your income strategy By understanding the way the tax system works, you can manipulate your retirement income to minimise the amount of tax you pay. By doing this, you can draw out the income you need whilst making the least possible impact on your assets. The tax system changes each year, so this is where flexibility and a balance of different tax wrappers really will help. For example, having a balance of State Pension, Flexible (Drawdown) Pension and NISAs allows you to changes your income each year in line with the tax regime, thus minimising the damage your required average retirement income has on your portfolio as a whole. Happier Retirement (continued)

L

Time is our most precious resource, so use it! Time is our most precious resource; after all, without it no amount of money, love or fast cars will be of benefit to you. Retirement creates a huge shift in what you do with your time. Some people excel with this new found freedom, and some people curl up into their shell and become a shadow of their former selves. To really create a Dream Retirement™, you need to plan what you are going to do with your time. There are several things you can do here, and I cover them in a lot more detail in the book, but here are 3 key areas to success: • Build the ‘Bucket List’ of your dreams, so that you have some exciting things to plan and tick off. • Make sure you know what your purpose is in retirement, as otherwise you will feel rudderless. • Design your Ideal Retirement Week, so that you structure your week into great ‘Focus Days’ and ‘Buffer Days’, where you pick off the must do jobs that don’t excite you.

Be the healthiest you Countless amounts of research show that if you want to live long into retirement you need to look after yourself. If you want to spend more time on the golf course than the in the hospital, then now is your chance to get yourself into the best shape possible. Take small simple steps to achieve this, and you will be amazed at what you can achieve over time. There are so many ways you can do this, and in the Dream Retirement™ book we go through

the ‘Six Simple Steps to an Energised Life’, but before you look at the more practical side of that, you need to get the mental side right. Give serious thought and visualise the worst extreme of what your life will look like 20 years from now if you don’t get/keep your body and mind in shape. Only once you truly understand the implications of not taking action will you be compelled to make significant strides to being the best you that you can be.

Keep warm this winter Follow these tips to keep you, your family and those around you warm and well in extremely cold weather.

To keep warm and well during spells of cold weather f Draw your curtains at dusk and keep your closed to block out draughts. f Have regular hot drinks and eat at least one hot meal a day if possible. Eating regularly helps keep energy levels up during winter. f Wear several light layers of warm clothes (rather than one chunky layer). f Keep as active in your home as possible. f Wrap up warm and wear shoes with a good grip if you need to go outside on cold days. f If you have reduced mobility, are 65 or over, or have a health condition such as heart or lung disease, you should heat your home to at least 18C. It’s a good idea to keep your bedroom at this temperature all night if you can and make sure you wear enough clothes to stay warm. During the day, you may prefer your living room to be slightly warmer f If you’re under 65 and healthy and active, you can safely have your house cooler than 18C, if you’re comfortable.

Protect your health in the cold Public Health England’s cold weather plan has tips on how to protect your health during cold weather. Make sure you are receiving any benefits you are entitled to, such as the Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment The Met Office has advice on getting ready for winter and some suggestions for practical things you can do to prepare for winter weather, including cold, ice and snow, high winds and flooding. The advice also tells you ways you can save money.

Look in on vulnerable neighbours and relatives Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to cold weather. Cold weather is especially dangerous for older people or people with serious illnesses, so check in on them if you can. 26

Deal All Stars FC In 2005, Dan Slaughter decided to form St Margaret’s All Stars FC so that disabled people like Dan’s brother Chris could come together and have fun playing football. Over the years, the club has grown, and two years ago, the club decided to become independent and changed its name to Deal All Stars FC, but the philosophy has remained the same: to help people with disabilities to reach their potential through football and fun. Parents and volunteers run this self-funded team. Deal All Stars FC is an inclusive club and often has social events throughout the year for players and their families.

Two players from the team have gone on to play for Kent and represented their county for two years. One player went on to play for London South East Regional Cerebral Palsy Squad. Our team can help players to go through the FA player pathways or just be happy to have fun kicking a ball around with friends. Each player is individual. Last year Deal All Stars FC supported four players to go on and achieve the FA level 1 coaching course. These coaches are now helping other players. Our team proves that it doesn’t matter what your disability or special educational need is - with the right support and encouragement anything is possible.

Deal Town Rangers Fo About the club Deal Town Rangers Football Club was formed in 1993 from a group of lads kicking a football around the North Deal Playing Field. From this modest beginning it is now one of the biggest youth football clubs in Kent. We currently have 20 teams ranging from U7s to Veterans, a mixture of boys and girls playing in five different leagues. Our home is at Castle Community College which is where our clubhouse is located, our entire training takes place (on the Astroturf facility) as well as many of our matches. We also play at Victoria Park (linked to the school), Marke Wood and our U18 Kent Youth League team play at The Charles Road Ground, home of Deal Town FC. We are a ‘Charter Standard Community Club’, which is the highest accolade that can be awarded to any youth ‘grass roots’ football club. This ensures that every team has a coach who has taken FA Level 1 Coaching Course (at a minimum), treatment of injury course & safeguarding children workshop.

Club ethos The club ethos is that every child shall get a chance to play football. No child is turned away and all are welcome. Whilst trophies are considered extra rewards it is participation that is our ultimate aim.
