Samaritans Just as important after 60 years Over sixty years ago a man called Chad Varah set up what became Samaritans - the first organisation anywhere in the world dedicated to listening to troubled people. Most people face difficult times in their lives. Times when they feel very low. Times when their troubles seem overwhelming. Times when the future looks hopeless. Times when they feel they have no one to turn to. For 60 years they have been able to turn to Samaritans. Today, it is not only a telephone-based service, callers can visit their local branch to meet a Samaritan face to face or they can e-mail or text. We need your help. Would you be interested in training to becoming a Listening Volunteer? Or could you become a Support Volunteer and become part of our Outreach Team visiting schools and universities or giving talks? Perhaps helping with fund-raising or administration
work in our branch? Although Samaritans is a national organisation each branch has to run and fund itself. To join us supporting callers who need our help please contact us at the.samaritans@btconnect.com We are a charity, you can use the address below if you would like to donate and help keep our centre open. Do you need our help? If there is something troubling you then get in touch. You don’t have to be suicidal to call. We’re here 24 hours a day, every day of the year. All you need to do is contact us and a Samaritan will listen.

Faversham Activity for Health, a registered charity recognised by the NHS Referral Scheme, has been organising exercise classes, that are especially invaluable to the more mature as well as the less fit and mobile, since 2002. And some of our members have been participating right from those very early days. The friendly classes, which are suitable for everyone, are led by a fully trained and experienced instructor and take place twice a week, on Monday and Thursday mornings at the Baptist Church Hall, Institute Road, just round the corner from Faversham library. Brogdale CIC Faversham Youth Consortia have bought a double decker bus! At the moment it is blue and we have been taking it to Abbey school grounds and West Faversham Community Centre over the summer to introduce it to young people. The bus is part of our out reach work in Faversham with young people. It is a great place to meet with loads of space. Young people can hang out with their friends, meet new people, chat to youth workers and help us come up with ideas as to how to decorate the bus and what to have on board. It can have a TV and Wii and there is an area for mixer decks. One idea is to

Paige Long, 18, is the first skater in the club’s history to qualify for the European Championships after becoming British Junior Ladies Solo Dance Champion at the British Championships in June. The competition, which runs from 23rd August until 31st August, is one of the largest in the world and hosts the top talent from across Europe.
This continued success is thanks to the hard work not only of the skaters themselves but also of Invicta’s head coach; Keith Marsh, and guest coach Alessandra Sain. As a world-class roller skater and choreographer, Alessandra has brought a new coaching element to the club’s competitive squad thanks to her considerable international experience and expertise.
This huge accomplishment is yet another triumph for the Faversham-based club which is setting its sights on yet more international

DEBRA is the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). Help DEBRA raise awareness of this painful genetic skin blistering condition during EB Awareness Week (25-31 October) and #ShowYourSeams. Clothing labels and seams can damage the fragile skin of someone living with EB - like Alisa. Her mum often has to remove the rough labels in her clothes or even turn them inside out to prevent further damage to her skin. Blisters, open wounds and sores form as a result of the slightest touch or trauma to her skin. Blisters have to be lanced and dressed every day – a painful procedure which can take several hours. Children with EB are often described as having skin as fragile as a butterfly’s wings. The DEBRA charity shop in Faversham will be turning their window display inside out during EB Awareness Week to highlight how difficult everyday life is for someone living with this debilitating condition. You could raise awareness of EB, during October, by taking a selfie of your own clothes turned inside out and posting it on one of DEBRA’s social media pages www.facebook.com/DEBRACharity or www.twitter.com/@CharityDEBRA - or you could hold a #ShowYourSeams dress down day at work, school or your local club and make a small donation to DEBRA. DEBRA has a charity shop in Faversham which sells affordable, good quality clothing, bric-abrac, books, toys, games and DVDs to larger furniture and electrical items, which have all been donated. Why not pop along to 46 Court Street, Faversham, Kent ME13 7AL and bag yourself a bargain or if you’ve had a clear out over the summer, please take along your unwanted goods and they will be put to really good use. The DEBRA charity shops provide invaluable awareness of this rare condition, but more importantly the steady income stream necessary to enable DEBRA to continue its focus of providing both care and support to individuals and families living with EB and fund pioneering research to find effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for EB.

Faversham Foodbank Faversham Foodbank has been in operation since May 2014. During this time 5256 meals have been provided for families helping them through times of crisis such as delays in receiving benefits, unexpectedly high bills and coping with family or own illness. The Foodbank is affiliated to the Trussell Trust, is not aligned to any church, passes no judgement on those who access its help and acts positively to help people in crisis avoid such crises happening again by signposting to relevant agencies who can help, for example with debt counselling and money management.
How people can help BEING ALERT The message from the volunteers at the Foodbank would be to ask all members of the community to be alert to family, friends or neighbours who might be struggling for a variety of reasons, some as stated above, and help them contact the referral agencies listed on the posters, kindly displayed by local businesses and organisations, around Faversham and on the website, www.favershamfoodbank.org. These referral agencies will be able to issue a voucher which can then be taken to the Foodbank’s distribution centre at the Gospel Mission Church in Tanners Street and exchanged for an emergency 3-day food supply. DONATING FOOD There are permanent collection points for the Foodbank at Tesco, Morrison’s, St Mary’s Church and the Gospel Mission. There is a frequently updated shopping list displayed on the collection points which shows the types of food that are needed to update current stocks.
Ed Parry
VOLUNTEERING volunteers are being sought who could help with fundraising, collecting the food from the collection points and who could help in the warehouse weighing food, stocking the shelves and moving stock, therefore, people who are capable of lifting 22 – 30 kg crates are urgently needed. DONATING MONEY By giving a regular or one off monetary donation – ongoing costs have increased throughout the year for services such as electricity and insurance.
A If anyone is able to offer such help please contact the Faversham Foodbank via its website at faversham.foodbank.org.uk

Faversham Model Originally five railway modellers got together in a local hostelry and they all agreed that they wanted the same goals – a model railway club where interests could be nurtured and grown and where the experience of some can help the many, but mainly a place to meet and enjoy the hobby and finally to build layouts that would be to a good standard and of exhibition quality. From this beginning Faversham Model Railway Club was founded in the summer of 2012. We were lucky and found a suitably sized meeting room at the West Faversham Community Centre in Bysing Wood Road, Faversham and this is where we hold our meetings every Tuesday evening from 19:15 to 22:00.
Our first meeting in June 2012 was advertised locally and on several internet based model railway forums. The original five founders considered that if we saw a dozen interested potential members we would be very lucky! To our total amazement thirty three interested people turned up. From that summer evening Faversham Model Railway Club became a reality. It was decided that initially, as approximately two thirds of those attending said they were interested in OO scale modelling, that a layout to enable their locos and stock to run should be built. Supplies of timber and plywood from a local builders merchant / DIY store was procured along with wood glue and screws etc plus all the track and a start made to construct our

Railway Club first layout. This has now grown into a large portable layout measuring currently 6620mm by 1640mm (Approx. 21’8” x 5’4”) with plans now afoot to extend its depth to allow a new storage and fiddle yard to be built along the rear. The layout has been named Bysing Wood Junction. While it is not a real place, we do run mainly Southern region stock in both steam and electric eras to represent a fictitious area of Kent. Bysing Wood Junction had its first exhibition debut earlier this year at the Tenterden show where it received much praise from the attending public.
lines were laid with track and then wired and without any scenery being added the layout was shown attending a local show in 2014. Since then much work has been undertaken to lay the tracks in the terminus area. This layout uses the more realistic and gentler in operation slow motion point motors rather than the conventional solenoid type these

As construction of the “OO” layout got further underway consideration to building a smaller sized “N” scale layout was made. Eventually a track plan was produced and the decision made to build this layout on three boards. Two having a continuous double track run with a main line station and stock storage sidings at the rear and the third board to be made at a slightly lower height than the main two boards and this is to house a terminus station, loco servicing depot and other sidings. Club membership is open to all over the age of eleven years, but junior members have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian until they are able to become senior club members upon reaching the age of eighteen. We offer free refreshments of a tea or coffee and a biscuit during our meetings and the cost per meeting is currently £2 plus an annual membership fee. The meeting fee helps to pay the hire charges of the room we meet in. Every last Tuesday of the month is a running evening, when one of the layouts is used to run a variety of member’s stock. Every three months, we also hold demonstrations or talks on related subjects. These are free to club members who wish to attend them and are normally held in a separate meeting room from the club room. So far we have had talks and demonstrations on real railway signalling, electrical soldering techniques, plastic kit construction and air brush paint spraying with more events planned for the future.

Whitstable Parkrun Whitstable parkrun has gone from strength to strength and now to see 200 at the start area is nothing unusual. We had several fancy dress days, a bunny run at Easter (as you would expect) and a Hawaiian theme to celebrate our 250th run in July. We have had three club takeovers this year. They were Canterbury Harriers, Invicta East Kent AC and by Kent Roller Girls. When we say takeover, we mean that the group organises the volunteers and pacers for a particular event. They are always well received. At the junior parkrun there were Easter Eggs and we had a ‘fruit Sundae’ event which went down exceptionally well with the children who were more used to having a sweet after their run.
What is a parkrun? parkrun is a free event which takes place every Saturday and Sunday mornings. They are in open spaces accessible to the public, It is an event without restrictions. The senior parkrun (5k) is every Saturday morning starting at 9am and is open to everybody over the age of 4 and the junior parkrun (2k) is every Sunday morning starting at 9.30am for 4-14 year olds.
I want to come - what do I need to do? To attend a parkrun you need to obtain a barcode. You only need to register once for
a barcode and it’s your entrance to over 600 parkrun in the world and the 50+ plus junior parkruns in this country. To obtain your barcode go to www.parkrun.com/register. Chose your nearest parkrun as your home and when the barcode is sent to you, print it, and if possible, laminate it against the weather.
What happens when I turn up to run? All newcomers are welcomed. At some events there is an elected volunteer who will tell you about the route and how things work. If not the Run Director will give all the information at the Pre Run Brief. The pre run brief usually includes safety information so listen very carefully.
And then… Run/walk/jog and enjoy. When you approach the finish funnel you will hear a blip which is your time being recorded and then you will be handed a finish token. Make your way to the end of the funnel and present your personal barcode and your position token to the barcode scanner for scanning. You will then be given your personal barcode back for you to use another week. The position token is kept by the team for use week in and week out. Have a post run coffee with everybody if you wish and your results will be text to you within a few hours.
There are parkruns in Canterbury, Margate, Pegwell Bay, Ashford, Folkestone as well as Whitstable. All info about all the runs can be found at www.parkrun.com/events 22

A hotel for dogs What will they think of next? In the country side three miles south of Faversham is a hotel. There is something unusual about it. The guests relaxing on the luxury sofa, sitting in front of the roaring fire are dogs. The hotel first opened its doors in March of this year and it has been at full occupancy most of the time. The hotel is the perfect solution for caring dog owners who do not want to put their much loved dog into a kennel. A hundred years ago the hotel was part of a small homestead selling eggs and home produce to local country folk. It has been the Vincent family’s home for eight years. Frequently described as a haven for dogs, with its three roaring fires and a hot aga in the kitchen pouring out heat, perfect for drying wet dogs post-walk.
The hotel has a 3.5 acre garden for the dogs to explore. A typical routine for the guests is a long walk in the morning in the woods next door. After lunch, and possibly a snooze, the more energetic of the pack enjoy a brisk walk in nearby orchards. For those who love to swim there are trips to the seaside and the creek in Oare. This really is the perfect spot for dogs. The maximum number of guests is six. I have so many funny stories to recount. Dogs arriving with sIx pages of instructions, herbal extract ten times a day, beauty products to be applied daily etc‌I have only had one dog who fretted for its owner but I would say 95% of the owners hide a tear as they say goodbye to their loyal friend.

St Mary of Charity The congregation and ‘friends’ of St Mary of Charity, the parish church of Faversham, have been fundraising since the beginning of Lent this year to enable the Church to improve the access in the South Porch, which is used as the main entrance. At present people with any kind of mobility problems need to negotiate a step into the porch and then several more steps into the church itself. If no one associated with the building is there, then the ramps which the church has have to be located and set out. The ramps themselves are too steep to walk down comfortably (even for those without mobility issues) and can be interesting if they are being attempted in a wheelchair. The various ramps which the church has were intended as a temporary measure - which has been in place too long! The designs which have been approved and which the Church is putting out to tender involve a gentle sloping stone floor inside the porch; once inside the building there will be a gentle fixed ramp leading off to the left and returning to floor level by the first pillar. For

those who want to use steps, there will be a small flight on the right, with a handrail. Other improvements to the social space at the back (or west end) of the nave will also be made. The fundraising has involved concerts, bake sales, sales of home made cards and pictures, hand made items for sale and bespoke catering and tailoring services. With the current fundraising and grants acquired, it is hoped that work will begin in early 2016, but as with all ancient buildings, the more funds which can be raised to give access to this important and much-loved place, the better! St Mary of Charity’s next task will then be to tackle structural problems in the north transept.”
