Faversham Foodbank Faversham Foodbank has been in operation since May 2014. During this time we have provided nearly five and a half thousand meals for families, helping them through times of crisis such as delays in receiving benefits, unexpectedly high bills and coping with family or own illness. The Foodbank is affiliated to the Trussell Trust. It is not aligned to any church and passes no judgement on those who access its help. It acts positively to help people avoid such crises happening again by signposting to relevant agencies who can help, for example with debt counselling and money management.

How does it work? The Foodbank collection and distribution is staffed entirely by volunteers, overseen by a Project Manager. Our volunteers collect food donations from permanent collection points in the town (for a list of collection points please see our website: www.faversham.foodbank.org.uk). They transport the donations to our central warehouse where they are sorted by type and date by more volunteers who also manage the stock rotation and produce shopping lists, to be displayed at the collection points and on our website, detailing required food and grocery items. On the distribution side, volunteers staff the Foodbank at the Gospel Mission church in Tanners Street where we receive clients, check the vouchers from issuing agencies, which all clients must have to be able to claim their emergency packs of food and distribute the food. We also lend a listening ear to those in need and help to signpost them if further referral to helping agencies is needed or requested.

How you could help… by volunteering As you can see, our volunteers are essential to the successful operation of the Foodbank. It appears that the need for the Foodbank is increasing with many more people needing our help and this means more pressure on our existing volunteers. Volunteers are especially needed for fundraising, liaising with the agencies who issue the vouchers to clients, collecting the food from the collection points, and to help in the warehouse weighing food, stocking the shelves and moving stock. Therefore, people who are capable of lifting 22-30kg crates are urgently needed. If you are able to offer your help, please contact the Foodbank on 01795 227202, email info@faversham.foodbank.org.uk, or visit www.faversham.foodbank.org.uk

Swale Community Centre Swale Community Centres (SCC) will be celebrating 25 years of the opening of Phoenix House as a community centre for Sittingbourne throughout 2016. Opened in 1991, Phoenix House provides low cost room hire to over 120 local and national charities, community and voluntary groups and societies, many providing vital services for the residents of Sittingbourne and Swale. Open 7 days a week, services and groups based at Phoenix House include the Prince’s Trust, Diversity House, fall prevention classes, Parkinson’s UK, Dementia support, art and craft groups, astronomy, counselling services and the Phoenix Youth Social Club.

In 2012, Phoenix House was threatened with closure, but after a successful campaign by residents and service users the centre remains open and increasingly busy. The charity is planning to build a new Phoenix House for the future, as the present building is over 100 years old and maintenance is increasing each year. Consultations with service users have gone ahead, land has been found and an initial design dawn up. The charity will soon begin the fundraising and grant sourcing to support the project. Throughout 2016 Phoenix House will be celebrating its anniversary with 25 events for 25 years, starting with a wine and wisdom night in January. Events planned include pamper evenings, fun days, craft fairs, quiz nights and U18s discos. At the end of April SCC, Phoenix House will be holding an Open Week where residents can pop in to find out more about the groups and services that use the centre, finishing with an Open Day at the beginning of May. To find out more please visit our Facebook or website (www. swalecommunitycentres.org.uk), look out for our tweets and posters.

DEBRA DEBRA is the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) - a painful genetic skin blistering condition which, in the worst cases, can be fatal. Clothing labels and seams can damage the fragile skin of someone living with EB - like Alisa. Her mum often has to remove the rough labels in her clothes or even turn them inside out to prevent further damage to her skin. Blisters, open wounds and sores form as a result of the slightest touch or trauma to her skin. Blisters have to be lanced and dressed every day - a painful procedure which can take several hours. Children with EB are often described as having skin as fragile as a butterfly’s wings. DEBRA has a charity shop in Faversham which sells affordable, good quality clothing, bric-abrac, books, toys, games, DVDs and electrical items, which have all been donated. Why not pop along to 46 Court Street, Faversham, Kent ME13 7AL and bag yourself a bargain or if you’ve had a clear out this winter, please take along your unwanted goods and they will be put to really good use.

DEBRA relies on the generosity of the public to carry out its work, improving lives and giving hope through specialist nursing care, family support and pioneering research to hopefully find a cure. DEBRA charity shops play a vital part in raising much needed funds and awareness for the charity. If you have any unwanted goods you would like to donate, or a few hours you could spare volunteering in the shop, please call 01698 424210 or email julie.miller@debra.org.uk. Kent to consider return to all-night lighting with new LED lamps A preferred option to return to all-night street lighting when Kent’s new energyefficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps are installed - meeting residents’ needs and savings targets - will be considered by Kent County Council members. Work to convert the county’s 118,000 street lights to LED is due to begin in residential areas in March and will be completed within 38 months. This will save Kent taxpayers up to £5.2 million a year, once installed. The newly-upgraded lighting will be connected to an individual central management system (CMS) that will allow the authority to monitor and provide optimal lighting levels in the future. Given this new flexibility, a 10-week countywide consultation on street lighting preferences was carried out last autumn. The findings will be debated at a meeting of the Environment and Transport Cabinet Committee. In addition to promoting the consultation online, deliberative groups were facilitated in

Ashford, Ramsgate and Tunbridge Wells, and research was undertaken with focus groups - specifically shift workers, the elderly and university and college students. Of the more than 3,700 responses, 63% said they preferred all-night lighting, while 37% said they preferred part-night lighting at the current level. Matthew Balfour, Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Now we are in a position to both make savings and respond positively to the views expressed in the LED street lighting consultation, we can now recommend that we adopt all night lighting. This could happen once a street light has been converted to LED and is commissioned on to a central management system. “The CMS technology will allow us to consider requests from the community to alter the pattern of lighting levels. For more information about street lighting in Kent, please visit www.kent.gov.uk/streetlights

Call for School Governors in the Maidstone area School governors are the largest and most vital volunteer force in education. However, there is currently a large number of primary and nursery schools in and around Maidstone looking for skilled and dedicated governors to join them. In order to help fill the high number of governor vacancies across Kent and to form effective and committed governing bodies, SGOSS – Governors for Schools is working in partnership with Kent County Council to appeal for new volunteers to come forward. Governing boards play a crucial part in raising school standards in three key capacities; setting strategic direction, monitoring school performance and ensuring the school’s budget is well spent. Anyone 18 or over and living in the UK can be a governor; it is by no means a role for just parents. Meetings are usually held in the evenings and you should be expect to commit on average 15 hours per term to the role. Free

training and support is provided and you do not need to have any experience of education, just drive, enthusiasm and the desire to use your skills in a positive and constructive way. Mrs P Woods, Headteacher at Brookfield Infant School in Aylesford said: “Having an effective, supportive governing board working alongside the head teacher and senior leadership team make a fantastic difference to the school. My governing board care passionately about the teachers and pupils in our school, visit regularly and monitor the effectiveness of the School Improvement Plan”. According to Ofsted figures, currently 81% of primary school children and 84% of secondary school children are currently receiving a Good or Outstanding education in Kent. However, there is still much further to go before every child is receiving the education they deserve. It is clearly an exciting time to be involved in education in Kent, so why not contribute to the local community this year and apply to become a school governor?

You can find out more about the responsibilities of a school governor and apply for a role by visiting www.becomeagovernor.com. SGOSS’s dedicated area managers are available to answer your questions and will have the latest vacancy information for schools in your local area. To get in touch, email gemma.bryer-ash@sgoss.org.uk or contact Gemma on 020 7288 9536.

Brogdale CIC Faversham Youth Consortia Helen Whately came to launch our new youth bus at WFCC. She cut the cake that the young people in the cookery club made and cut the ribbon to the bus doors. Nigel Kay, the Faversham mayor, went all racing driver and shook a bottle of bubbly over the bus and folks.

Great Explosion Centenary Commemorations Faversham Town Council will be marking the Centenary of the Great Explosion with a service, led by the Bishop of Dover, at the site of the mass grave at Love Lane Cemetery, Faversham, on Saturday 2nd April at 1pm. What started as a small fire in a pile of empty TNT sacks at the Explosives Loading Company works at Uplees, near Faversham, culminated in three successive explosions. Despite a valiant attempt to put out the fire, when the factory manager eventually called for the evacuation of the site it was too late. The first major explosion occurred

at 1.20pm, followed by two further explosions at 1.40pm and 2pm. A total of 108 men and boys were killed, including many members of the works’ fire brigades. An exhibition covering the Great Explosion will be running at the Fleur de Lis Museum in Faversham, from Saturday 1st April to Sunday 1st May. Entry to the exhibition is free. Relatives of the deceased and of people who took part in the aftermath are invited to contact the Town Clerk on 01795 503288 or email louise.bareham@favershamtc.co.uk

Faversham Town FC volunteers needed Faversham Town FC are currently looking for a new match day programme editor for the 2016/17 season. The club would like to appoint the new programme editor, as the current programme editor will be unable to commit beyond the 2015/16 season. The editor would not necessarily have to attend matches but would need to keep upto-date with the day-to-day running of the club, gather and edit information and think of interesting content for the official Faversham Town FC match day programme, which is called ‘The Lilywhite’. Current programme editor Mark Downs, along with other volunteers within the club, will be able to assist in the creation of the programme when necessary.

Whilst this is a voluntary position, there will be benefits to go with this role. Of course, if you feel you can help out with anything else that hasn’t been stated, the club would still love to hear from you because you can never have too many volunteers. Please contact Press Officer Thomas Reeves by emailing thomas@4reeves.com if you might be interested or would like further information before committing to such a role. Please also copy current programme editor Mark Downs, whose email address is lilywhite. editor@googlemail.com, and Chairman Ray Leader’s email address rleader4@btinternet.com into the email. Faversham Hat Festival On Easter Saturday, 26th March 2016, the third Faversham Hat Festival takes place. The highlight is the Hat Parade. Starting at The Hat Shop in West Street it winds its way through the town centre at 11 o’clock. It will be led by Jack Spratt, the Town Crier, and accompanied by a group of wandering minstrels followed by hundreds of adults, children and pets in a wonderful array of hats. Some will be competing for one of the best hat prizes on offer but many others are there just to enjoy the occasion. The festival was started in 2014 by Rachel Thapa-Chhetri, who had just embarked on a new business venture opening ‘The Hat Shop’ in West Street, Faversham. She had heard of a similar festival in Bridport, Dorset which had been started by another hat shop owner back in 2010. She felt it went without saying that Faversham should have one too and so began the Faversham Hat Festival.

only criteria is that you wear a hat! The festival encourages people to be wild and outrageous, utilise their creative flair and create something a little different but it is ok to wear your old favourite if you wish. The most important part of the festival is the coming together of the community in a shared way. There are a number of best hat competitions that can be entered into for the more ambitious and competitive participants. The competition categories will be judged at the Alexander Centre - the destination of the parade. Non hat wearers are welcome to watch the spectacle and are encouraged to line the streets and cheer for their favourite hats.

The wonderful thing about the festival is that everyone can join in, including dogs for which there is a special prize! The

In addition there will be a Hatter’s Fair in the Alexander Centre local craft and wares on sale. There will then be a screening of Easter Parade with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers at the Centre after the judging, and in the afternoon there’s a tea dance.

Cats Protection We are the local Swale Branch of Cats Protection, a small branch of unpaid volunteers that operate from Sheppey and Sittingbourne. We have space for eight cats in fosterers cabins and one family of kittens in a specially prepared spare room. We are generally full as we get more calls for people wanting to re-home their cats than people wanting to adopt from us. We generally re-home between 60 and 80 cats and kittens most years and spend around £6,000 a year on assisting people on benefits or low income to get their cats neutered which we strongly encourage. We are always on the lookout for volunteers with transport, especially at the moment as three of our volunteers are either about to, or have become Mums for the first time: as you can imagine in such a small branch this will cause us major problems helping cats in our area. We fundraise with sales, raffles, tombola stalls etc during the Spring and Summer months to raise cash to fund the branch, as the National Cat Centre (the CP HO) only provide limited financial

help to run the branch. We recently re-located a fosterers double cabin on the island which in total cost us £2,000 so you will see that running a branch does require fundraising and donations from members of that public that care about cats. Until recently we have taking care of the feral cat colony at the Isle of Sheppey prisons which involved someone visiting to feed every day, however due to changes in security, the feeding is now done by a prison inmate. We do however still provide the food and pay for the vet bills when a prison cat gets injured or sick. We currently have a good selection of cats in need of their forever homes which you can see on our website www.cats.org.uk/swale where all our contact details are available. For those without internet access you can contact us on 0345 3712755.

Two cats that have been with us some while that would really like homes are…

Patch

- a very friendly eight year old girl that just couldn’t put up with the other cats that lived with her. She was found wandering but chipped. The owner has said she doesn’t get on with the housemates and often goes wandering so has signed her over to us. She has had her initial trip to the vets and annual jabs so she is now available to go to a cat free new home. She really is a lovely girl!

Lucy

(LuLu for short) - she is 3 years old and likes a quiet life. She’s never been close to children but does like snuggling under the bed covers and her fleecy blanket, which must also be adopted too. She would be ideal in an adult only home with lots of love, cuddles and attention. Many more available on the website.
