Cllr Mrs Janette Potter and Cllr David Stevenson have served Chelmsford City Council – previously Chelmsford Borough Council – for the past 24 years and were honoured to be nominated by Chelmsford City Council to attend the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday 20 May 2015.
Photos: John Turkentine
Both Councillors were chauffeured to Buckingham Palace where they enjoyed afternoon tea, walking around the gardens, listening to the music from the Bandstand played by the Queen’s musicians, and most importantly seeing the Queen and Prince Philip. Janette and David said it was like a dream come true.

Sadly we are losing two members of our Editorial Team: Mike Arnold who has provided newsfeed from St Michael & All Angels Church, and Malcolm Watson who has proof read articles, compiled countless anagrams and taken many photographs including the cover photograph of our Spring issue. We thank them both for their time and help which has contributed to the success of our Magazine.

We are awaiting news of the representative from the Church, but we still need a volunteer to help with proof reading. The majority of the work is undertaken remotely by email, occasionally we need a meeting and these tend to take place during the working morning at the Keene Hall.

teg - The Environment Group teg (The Environmental Group) was founded in 1986 when a few like-minded people decided to do something about the environment in the two parishes. teg now works at several sites across the two parishes with a Sunday and a Wednesday working group. The Sunday group meets normally on the first Sunday afternoon of the month, whilst the Wednesday group meets every week from 10am. The work by the Wednesday group is planned the Sunday before whereas the work of the Sunday group is planned well in advance. Over the next few months, the Sunday group are planning the following working parties between 2 and 4pm.
7 June & 2 August Galleywood Common Lowland Heath area This is located near the Horse and Groom public house. We are one of the groups who work here to try to prevent the heather being overwhelmed by gorse, brambles and bracken. 5 July Chelmer Park Community Orchard This is located near the playground in Chelmer Park. It is an apple orchard that was planted in the 1950s but was neglected for many years. Our group is steadily clearing around the trees to prolong their life and maintain this area as a valuable wildlife reserve especially for insects.

6 September Luxfield or Chelmer Park Luxfield is located off Vicarage Lane near the allotment and cemetery. It is partly an oak wood, partly grassland/meadow. Our group is maintaining and increasing part of it as a meadow area to allow the large variety of wild flowers to thrive and increase. If you would like to join any of the Sunday working parties, please contact John Emery on 01245 475648 or email john.emery1@live.co.uk for more details. Galleywood WI If you think WI is all Jam and Jerusalem, read on… The WI is for the women of today, it offers you the chance to make new friends whilst having an enjoyable time. Nationally WI was established in Britain in 1915, yes this is our centenary, it is the largest and most influential voluntary woman’s organisation, with over 200,000 members nationally. But I would like to tell you about Galleywood WI. We meet at Keene Hall on the second Thursday of each month from 2-4pm. Why not give us a visit? You will not be alone, we have a committee member delegated to meet you and to make sure you are introduced to other members; visitors are asked to pay a small guest fee of £4, which entitles you to light refreshments, the opportunity to listen to an excellent speaker, and the company of very friendly ladies. You will also hear news of forthcoming social events, such as lunches and outings. Each year we nominate a charity and hold fund raising events, all of which are great fun.
In April we held our annual General Meeting, and I was fortunate to be elected by the members to be their president. The Secretary and Committee remain the same as last year, and our thanks were given to Beryl Metcalf on her retirement as President, a position she held for the last three years. I have been a member of Galleywood WI for twenty years, and it has always made me feel part of our village, and given me the chance to learn new skills, and be educated on many subjects at our local Headquarters, Hatfield Peveral Essex Headquarters, and Denman College, Oxford. You don’t know what you are missing! Come along, make new friends, enjoy the meetings, you will be most welcome. For further information, I would be pleased to hear from you on 01245 258559 or via email to v.villa@talktalk.net Just a piece of useless information, I do make jam and love the singing of Jerusalem. I shall be awaiting your call. Val Villa President Galleywood WI

Gardener Ken visits Galleywood On 28 May the Galleywood Horticultural Society held their monthly meeting at the Keene Hall with guest speaker BBC Essex gardening expert Ken Crowther. Ken spoke about his early days in radio, joining the station soon after it opened in the 1980s. Ken explained the huge changes in the technical equipment he had used from cutting and editing the recorded tape in the beginning to nowadays using two computer screens to run the programme, one with the music order and the other for texts and e-mails. Around 70 members and guests enjoyed the talk. And finally can I remind you that our Summer Show is on Saturday 11 July and is for everyone to enter, not just members; entry schedules will be available at Keene Hall and Abercorn Garden Centre.

Gardening activities at local schools cabbages, beetroot, peas, broad beans, potatoes, tomatoes and butternut squash so far this season and have already given the cook some rhubarb to be cooked for school dinner! Every class has sown sunflower seeds and runner beans so there will be lots to see growing in the coming weeks. As well as learning more about growing plants in the weekly sessions, the children are enjoying the experience of communicating with adults that are not their teachers, and always enjoy learning outside the confines of the classroom. It is a constant pleasure for us as volunteers to be greeted with such enthusiasm on a Thursday. By Sue Read Retired Deputy Headteacher

Several members of the Galleywood Horticultural Society have once again been supporting gardening activities at Galleywood Infant School and St.Michael’s Junior school. During the autumn term they helped with the after school gardening club and during the spring and summer terms they have been working one morning a week, taking small groups of children to work in the polytunnel and the vegetable garden. Some glorious chrysanthemums were grown in the polytunnel which were picked for the entrance hall and this week the first sweet peas were picked and a posy was put on the headteacher’s desk. Some additional raised beds are being constructed in the polytunnel so that even more crops can be grown this year. The children have sown carrots,

Wildlife in Galleywood by Marilyn Byford Take a walk on Galleywood Common any time of day You will see much of interest as you go on your way Birds fly round in freedom from gorse to hedge or tree Stay a while and watch them you’ll enjoy it just like me In spring they sing so sweetly hoping for a mate Then build their nests in earnest they have no time to wait Rabbits playing happily they emerge at dusk and dawn I have observed them many times on the commons lush soft lawn Green woodpeckers search the ground for their favourite treat Ants are their endeavour to find them is a feat Black and white pied wagtails busy digging round Oh such pretty little birds they search without a sound Way on high a sparrowhawk floats on the gentle breeze Take cover all you smaller birds or he’ll swoop on you with ease A jackdaw with such pale eyes is next upon the scene He stares at me with interest then relaxed he starts to preen I stroll along beside a pond the ducks are very loud There are some baby ducklings now with parents very proud An adder slithers on his way beneath the bracken green He passes very quickly by has no wish to be seen Far into the distance I glimpse a muntjac deer He will be so nervous i know he won’t come near Butterflies of every hue beside the old mill pond Our lovely church comes into view a place of which I’m fond I make my way there through the trees dragonflies drifting past Through the gate and i am there perfect peace at last I sit awhile and before too long i spy a squirrel up a tree His acrobatic movements make me laugh wholeheartedly Such simple things in life are these that give us so much pleasure We must thank our Lord above who gave us them to treasure

So just what can you and I do to be a good neighbour? Here are a few more practical suggestions… With the summer approaching there will be more parties that will spill out into the garden. If you are going to hold one – do let your neighbours know, especially if you are expecting to run late or have a Bar-B-Q as noises and smells will travel. Best of all invite them too… Why not just have a ‘street meet’ and invite the neighbours in. There does not have to be a reason, other than meet each other and have a good time. Ask them to bring their own snacks and drink with you providing the glasses, cutlery and plates. Got your own ideas? Why not share them with us at one of the Coffee Mornings or send them to: Galleywood Good Neighbours c/o 2 Vale End Galleywood, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 8NZ kenedwards2012@btinternet.com
