Winter Wonderland Coming to Herne Bay Pier
This summer has seen enormous strides in the regeneration of Herne Bay Pier which has appeared in clips on television three times over the last two months. It is now attracting a lot of attention and the small group of volunteers spearheading its revival has been described by the National Piers Society as “one of the most active pier groups in UK”. Almost all the money they have raised over the last two years has been through winning bids, loans and

donations. The transformation of the bleak and windswept platform they inherited last year with the bustle of a busy day is remarkable in such a short time. We hope the growing interest in the revival of a traditional seaside pier will bring business and visitors into the town and benefit the wider community. Two years ago, one local resident told the Pier Trust, “You need four ingredients to make a pier successful – shelter, food, toilets and entertainment.” So, this June, the biggest innovation, a large wave-shaped shelter was constructed on the platform, funded by Peoples’ Millions Lottery Fund and thanks to all the thousands of people who voted for it and the support of the other groups in Herne Bay like BayPromo, Herne Bay in Bloom, Beach Creative and many others. That was the first achievement to be shortly followed by the opening of a new toilet block for diners on the pier. As the Pier Trust had to install all new sewage and plumbing systems, Magazine when responding to advertisements

this has been a large worry and expense but it is now up and running. We now have many more food huts on the pier serving a range of dishes to suit all tastes – Thai food, burgers and hot dogs, seafood, pulled pork, ice cream and hot puds, soups and smoothies, pancakes, sweets and soon to be opened ….a thin and crispy pizza hut. The final ingredient is entertainment. To add to the children’s activities which one of our most loyal tenants, Swales Bailey, has been bringing to the pier including the iconic helter skelter and boating pool, we are also lucky to have a music man in the recording studio on the pier who has all the contacts and expertise to bring entertainment onto the pier. What is wonderful, is that the Trust’s vision of a retail village community working together to make the pier a success is really happening and they are working so hard to make this Christmas On the Pier a major event (see the programme overleaf) with

musicians, singers, live reindeer and many more delights for all the family to enjoy. What does next year hold for the pier? We have put in a bid to the government’s Coastal Revival Fund to build an all singing/ dancing stage with changing room, lights, roof and electrical supply for both professionals and the community groups to use. The design is like a shell to reflect the seaside theme. The pier will come alive again with its traditional role as an entertainment venue. Also for next year, we hope to build a sit-in café where, no matter what the weather flings at them, visitors will be able to enjoy a snack or drink in a cosy place where they can still see the sea and seashore.
w
A message to potential sponsors : we always need more support – both financial or volunteering time – to achieve our dream to rejuvenate our lovely old pier – please consider becoming part of this exciting local project – you will receive a warm welcome and become proud of your contribution. Happy Christmas from the Pier Trust, Volunteers and Tenants. Come and join us on the pier for one or two of the following items on the following programme: (check the Pier Trust website to confirm dates and times – especially times of live reindeer who are only allowed three hours on show).

a bandstand with a covered area beneath to serve as an auditorium in wet weather. That auditorium, now the foyer of the King’s Hall, became known as the East Cliff Pavilion. It provided a wonderful venue for big bands and entertainment with the grassy slopes serving as a natural amphitheatre auditorium.
The King’s Hall The King’s Hall is one of the architectural gems in Herne Bay with its original Edwardian features and seaside views. The lovely foyer still has its original wood panelling, the massive revolving door and the Edwardian ticket kiosk with the plaque commemorating Edward VII carved in white Carrara marble a metre high. In 1903, Mr Thomas Dence donated the land on the downs to the town where the Kings Hall stands. He paid for the construction of
Ten years later, the land behind the pavilion was excavated and a ballroom added onto the existing building. The new theatre was opened on July 10th 1913 by the late King’s sister, Princess Henry of Battenburg, one of the daughters of Queen Victoria. The venue was named King Edward VII Memorial Hall in memory of the late king and it became the town’s main venue for musical events, concerts and dances for many decades.

The opening event was a major occasion for the town with the Princess arriving at 12.30 at Herne Bay Station. There was a Grand Concert for the Princess and VIPs and after the official ceremony and dinner, the Princess left at 4.00pm. Later entertainments with the massed bands of the 6th Dragoon of Guards and the Grand Dance and party were probably much less formal. The new concert hall could seat 1500 people and it had an additional roof garden accommodating another 1100. To the east and west were planted Italian Terraces to seat even more. Altogether, it became an Please mention HBCM03 Magazine A/W.indd 8-9

enormous venue with seating for over 3000 people - a magnet for this thriving seaside resort. The original bandstand remained on the top until 1969. The King’s Hall ballroom had a small stage built on the seaward facing wall and, in this position, the acoustics were perfect for concerts and military bands. However, with the advent of larger musical performances and concerts, there was a demand for a larger stage. So the stage was relocated into its present position with the result that the concrete beams in the ceiling badly effected the acoustics. By 2010, the foyer had become a dingy and sad area with brown paintwork and peeling wallpaper. The Herne Bay Conservation and Improvement Trust took on the challenge to rejuvenate the foyer transforming it into a bright communal art gallery and café. They submitted a bid to the People’s Millions Lottery Fund and, ably supported by local schoolchildren on ITV Meridian, they won the votes to win the £50,000 funding to rejuvenate the foyer. Working with the building students of Canterbury College, the Trust demolished the ugly partitions around the toilets and built a new white exhibition wall. The design students competed to design the new fabric for the chairs and watched the process for the design and printing of the material. The Canterbury College students gained the valuable experience of working on a real brief. The old wallpaper was stripped away and the walls and ceiling painted in five coats of gleaming white and blue paint. Lighting was added to the exhibition walls and the floor Please mention HBCM03 Magazine A/W.indd 10-11

re-carpeted. With all the chairs refurbished with the winning designer’s fabric, the gallery was opened by Sandi Toksvig in July 2011. Since that opening, the Trust has opened new exhibitions of local artists’ work every six weeks and the foyer has truly become a vibrant gallery which has displayed the talent of artists, photographers, sculptors and local schoolchildren. The Canterbury City Council has restored other areas of the building and it now not only hosts a variety of entertainment again but is also a successful wedding venue. After celebrating its centenary with great local acclaim, the King’s Hall remains a special community asset of Herne Bay.

Herne Bay Basketball Club
Herne Bay Basketball Club was established over 50 years ago and was a founding member of the East Kent Basketball Association in 1961, which runs the local basketball competitions in the East Kent area. The club who are based at Herne Bay High School, operate two men’s teams and a ladies team, and are managed by a group of dedicated volunteers led by Club Chairman Brian Steele. Training sessions and home games are held on Wednesday evenings from 19:30 - 21:30. Last season saw the both the Ladies and Men’s A team have great league runs finishing in 2nd and 3rd places respectively, and there was also victory in the cup competitions with the Men’s A.Team winning the Adams Plate, and the Ladies Team winning the Grove Cup 3rd place play-off game. With the new season only just started in October we are looking to continue and build on this success. The club has a good reputation for giving junior players a chance to develop their talent within the teams, and for younger players there are opportunities to receive high quality coaching from the Club’s Chairman Brian Steele at one of his weekly training sessions. Many of the older girls who attended have already progressed to join the Women’s senior 16 HBCM03 Magazine A/W.indd 16-17

Fourteen year old Jack Masters holds tribute football event for his dad laura Masters shared Jack’s story Jack lost his dad Pete Masters to SUDEP in March 2015; it was a massive shock to all of us. Jack has been a member of the Herne Bay Harriers Football club since he was 8 years old. The Harriers Fixture Secretary Dave Bott came up with a brilliant idea of holding a charity football match for SUDEP Action, to show their support for Jack, and of how much they thought of his dad Pete. Jack lives for football and has been playing since he was 5 years old. Pete loved to watch him play the game. Jack trains with his football team every week. The Harriers football team are an extended family for Jack and have been brilliant. We held the memorial match on the 2 August at Herne Bay’s Main Football Ground. It was a sunny day and so many people turned up to watch the game. The Dave Botts under 18’s team members all came back for the event as they are all at different Universities. The under 18 Harriers team gave up their time to make the game possible and of course Jack’s under 14 team who all played too. Jack played the whole match with the Under 18’s Harriers and did an amazing job; they won the game by 4 goals to 3. We had various other activities at the football event to help raise more money for SUDEP Action including tombola, name the teddy and glitter tattoos. A friend of mine helped look after the tombola, glitter tattoos and name the bear stands. My friends and I organised all the prizes 18 HBCM03 Magazine A/W.indd 18-19

for the tombola which raised £1085. We managed to get some amazing prizes from some generous local businesses. The whole day raised £2485 and so much awareness. Most people had never heard of SUDEP, just as we hadn’t before Jack lost his dad. The game was sponsored by Complete Roofing who donated £250. The Harriers Football Club also donated £250 after they all decided they wanted to match the sponsor, as it was such a good day and worthy cause. The motivation came mostly from Jack’s football team who wanted to show that Jack is part of the Harriers’ family, help create awareness of SUDEP and raise funds. It has been arranged now that this would be a yearly event as everyone enjoyed it so much. They decided to call it the ‘Masters Cups’ in memory of Jack’s dad Pete. Jack thought it was a brilliant idea as it was so much fun to be part of and he is looking forward to next year’s match. Jack did a brilliant job and his dad would be very proud of him. This is the first time Jack has done anything like this, he was nervous about it because he didn’t want to let his dad down. Jack is very thankful for everyone who helped make the day possible, it was such a positive day and we couldn’t believe how many people turned up to show support for SUDEP Action. It showed him how many people cared about his dad and about him. Magazine when responding to advertisements

For anyone with a passion for photography, Herne Bay Photographic Club is the place to go, providing an opportunity to meet and share the interest with likeminded people. It is a small, friendly club, with a wide range of ages and abilities. The membership includes people who are just starting out and others who are experienced hands; some have sophisticated cameras while others use their smartphone; some like to print their photos and others prefer digital media. The club provides a full and varied programme from September to May, with something different every week. This includes interactive instruction evenings, where a photographer from within the club demonstrates and encourages members to learn a new technique or practical element. Previous instruction evenings indoors have included posing models for portraits, understanding perspective, and constructing light boxes for table-top photography. Outdoor tutorials have included light painting. There are a variety of competitions throughout the season using
www.communityad.co.uk
Kent County Photographic Association (KCPA)-approved judges. Each will often have an individual theme or subject to encourage members to try something that may be outside their usual area of interest. Just for fun, once a year, members enjoy a Scavenger Hunt, where they are given a list of ten subjects for them to pick seven to take a photo of. It is judged internally and there is a prize for the person with the highest score. The club sometimes locks horns with other photographic clubs. These “battles” are friendly but highly competitive. Recently the club pitched a set of their images against those of Deal Camera Club, narrowly losing by just two points. The club is looking forward to a rematch in February! From time to time, members enjoy lectures from external speakers. They are given by either established photographers or experienced KCPA judges. These can be very entertaining, and cover a wide range of topics, sometimes in tandem with future competitions. For example, Trevor Youe provided an excellent masterclass on taking “street images”, and then returned later in the year to judge the club’s street image competition. In contrast, the club had a very amusing talk by freelance paparazzi Alan Chapman, who has been photographing celebrities for over 30 years.

The Kent Disability League The Kent Disability League began in the 2005/2006 season to provide regular competitive playing opportunities for children and adults with a disability. Prior to this there were only a handful of disability teams across the county who played friendly games, often in one off regional competitions. The Kent DL soon established itself and grew at a phenomenal rate, partly in response to the demand for more localised competition. The Kent DL is the largest County Disability League in the country, which incorporates a fully established adult section created in 2009 and now includes 9 v 9 competitions played on grass. In August 2015 the KD League received League Commended Status from the FA as part of the Respect Awards campaign. FA Chairman, Greg Dyke wrote that the awards were “in recognition of our

commitment to offering your participants, referees and spectators an experience of football which is fair, safe and enjoyable”. The Kent DL recently announced the link up with two League partners. The Kent County Football League and The Kent Girls and Ladies Football League. The leagues will work together to raise awareness, share best practise along with promoting disability football throughout the county. This will also enable a possible outlet for players that may want to move into mainstream football. Now just into the start of the season, which runs from September to May annually, thirteen junior teams and twenty-eight adult teams have been competing in the Kent DL’s eight divisions, where around three-hundred players have been taking part from clubs including Maidstone United Raiders, Folkestone Invicta, Charlton Athletic, Anchorian Equal Teams, Deal All Stars, Swanscombe Tigers, Canterbury City, Bromley Green Valiants, RMB United, Thanet Galaxy, Milton & Fulton Spiders, Gillingham FC, Sheppy United and Cantiaci FC. The Kent DL itself was originally run, funded and administered by the Kent County FA but all Kent DL operations and funding are now the responsibility of the league committee which includes representatives from various clubs within the Kent DL.

“I set up Community Counselling Service (CCS) in 2008 to offer accessible and affordable counselling to those in the community of Canterbury and surrounding areas”, says director, Carrol Rouse. This service was based next door to the Umbrella Centre in Canterbury in a small cottage. After 8 years of providing counselling support from there, CCS moved on 1st September this year to Roper Close in order to expand the service and offer more availability to people in the Canterbury area. At present, CCS has 50 voluntary counsellors, all CRB checked and either Members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). All the counsellors have been trained or are in ongoing training with officially recognised training organisations. In these uncertain times, we can help clients work through many current and contemporary challenges, including redundancy or early retirement. The specialised counselling expertise covers a wide range of issues: • Abuse • Anger • Anxiety • Bereavement • Childhood Sexual Abuse • Depression • Disability • Domestic Violence • Family Issues • Loss • Low Self-Esteem • Mental Health • OCD • Post-Natal Depression • Panic Attacks • Post-Traumatic Stress • Relationships • Sexual Identity & Stress Mental health problems are continuing to increase and people face difficulties such as anxiety and/or depression. Their lives are completely dominated by mental illness and, as a result, they are unable to live a normal life. They are affected physically by panic attacks and illnesses, and psychologically by low self esteem, eating problems, indecisiveness and suicidal thoughts – to name a few. GP’s Please mention HBCM03 Magazine A/W.indd 30-31
www.communityad.co.uk
are overwhelmed by the number of patients with mental health problems manifesting as physical ailments. Counselling is a viable alternative to medication and CCS offers accessible counselling to those who would not normally be able to benefit for financial reasons. We offer the opportunity to explore difficulties without limiting the number of sessions as often clients present with issues which require more longer term work. This therapy is not available on the NHS where short term counselling of 6-8 sessions is on offer. As the client’s mental health improves, their confidence and self esteem increases along with relationships with others. This in turn usually leads to less reliance on prescription drugs and GP’s, thereby reducing the pressure on GP surgeries. Referrals come from GP surgeries, mental health teams and many other sources, including self referral. People accessing CCS services are often disadvantaged because they are unemployed or on a low income. They are of all ages (16 years upwards) and include parents with young children, young adults and older people. As a community interest company, CCS makes ends meet by having volunteer counsellors, charging a small fee for counselling sessions (but does not turn those away who cannot afford to pay) and benefits from donations from organisations such as Kent Minds, Kent Community Foundation and Charter 600 Charity. The counsellors also undertake their own fundraising activities such as an annual bike ride.
You can find more details about the services CCS provides by contacting Carrol Rouse on (01227) 766441 or visit the website at www.communitycounsellingservice.org.uk Magazine when responding to advertisements
