Disabled access To all that may not know me, my name is Councillor Konnor Collins. I’m 53 years old, a Thanet District and Ramsgate Town Councillor, a veteran of the Armed Forces and registered blind. The idea of this column is to get as much feedback from disabled people, out there in Ramsgate, as possible. It is my wish to use this column to run alongside a radio phone-in, raising the same issues.

Friends of Ellington Park The Friends of Ellington Park have been very busy again this summer with their May Fayre, Music Sundays in July and August and the superb (despite the weather!) Rock in the Park in September. Thank you, Ramsgate for your continued support; it is a real fillip to all the Friends. Our Bookshop and the Bric-a-brac shop are thriving and bringing in much needed funds for the Park. They are both run entirely by volunteers, who turn up week after week in all weathers; they really are marvellous! The people who donated all the goods sold in the shops are wonderful too, we couldn’t do it without them.
Smile you’re on camera!
Dates for your diary! Things to look forward to are our Quiz on November 20 (with our famous Ellington Ploughman’s supper) to be held at St. Laurence Church Hall at 7pm (please call Pat on 580579 to book tickets - and we’re limited to 100, so book now to avoid disappointment). Craig Prentice will be holding his lovely and well-loved Carols by Candlelight Service in the park on December 20, starting at 6pm. We’ll also see you at the Ramsgate Christmas Lights switch-on November 29 in the Town Centre. Best wishes from the Friends of Ellington Park
After a meeting between the Friends, the Police, Fire Service, and Thanet District Council it was decided to install CCTV in the park: the two nasty fires in the children’s playground upset local residents as well as the wider public. Thanks to a grant from Ramsgate Town Council, another from Anne Barnes the Police Commissioner, a small amount from Thanet District Council, and hundreds of pounds in donations from members and local residents (especially Mrs B who is too shy to be named), the camera system will be in, up and running by the end of September.

Ramsgate Events Organisers What a Great Summer for the Ramsgate Events Organisers (REO) Events, most of which were sponsored by Ramsgate Town Council (RTC) with additional input by Thanet District Council (TDC). The town of Ramsgate goes from strength to strength and the future is looking amazingly bright. The season kicked off with the Ellington Park Spring Fair; the weather was perfect and the set up was fantastic with some great acts on the Bandstand. The 75th Anniversary of Operation Dynamo, organised by Angela Sutton (her biggest event since the South East Air Show at Manston), brought a truly fitting tribute to that unbelievable event with the Dunkirk Rescue. The Ramsgate Tunnels staged a very nostalgic trip back, when the seafront was transformed to 1940 - with entertainment from those great days. Soon after this success came one of the busiest “Bucket and Spade Rallies” in recent years, which brought locals and visitors to the Government acre site for yet another day of looking back with the support of so many vehicles of bygone days. Unfortunately, the Teddy Bears Picnic, had horrible weather and had to close early. Next came the Thanet at War Weekend and the Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Jazz Festival across the town. This is getting a great following with Jazz fans from across the country joining the residents for some fab music. Ramsgate Carnival & Fair is also well on the way up again, with a new team at the helm. Ramsgate Week Sailing Regatta, gained some prime time TV coverage for our town. The Ramsgate Sprint was brought back to the Western Undercliff and Government

Acre. This was an international motorcycle event of the fifties and sixties and brought back to Ramsgate in its 50th anniversary year. I have never seen so many families, bikers and fanfare loving people having so much fun in town since those days when our seaside town was a top venue. Wall of death, Motor Cycle Racing against the clock on the prom, and a truly 1960s set of non-stop stage acts - the Beatles, Kinks, Monkies, Elvis, all those great sounds of the sixties. It was an honour and privilege to be Compere of this and many others events this summer. I think the Sprint took 50 years off me - really took me back to my biking youth - bring it all back next year please! Add to this lot and many more events, plus our eighth year of Make Me A Star. This year we have two winners, so, two winners shows to look out for. We have now started working on our fourth Ramsgate Rocks Events Booklet, so if you have an event, show or activity planned for 2016 then please let us know ASAP and you will be in next year’s Rocks. Also REO meetings are every two months on the second Monday in the month, 7pm in the Custom House. this is open to all event organisers or a representative of any Ramsgate Event. See RTC Website for meeting dates. To all this year’s event organisers; thank you so much for all that you do for our Town of Ramsgate, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike and thank you people that have attended the events, without you our everts would be wasted. Thank you to all. Ralph Hoult Chairman of REO
Friends of Ramsgate Seafront (FoRS) are pleased to confirm that our work to protect, enhance, and preserve our seafront environment continues apace! Due to the increasing number of matters relevant to our stated aims we are launching several new projects and initiatives. We will be holding our AGM at the Comfort Inn, Victoria Parade on November 10, 2015 (6pm - 9pm), we would love to see you there! For further details or to see how you can help, please contact us via our Facebook page “The Friends of Ramsgate Seafront”, or call us on 07835 075 456
Ramsgate Illuminations Christmas is coming, and so are the Ramsgate Illuminations. This is the time of year when boat owners in Ramsgate start planning for the big spectacle. Last year over thirty boats ‘lit up’ and attracted interest from all over Kent. Each evening we had hundreds of people lining the Royal Harbour to view the lights. In Ramsgate , we have a beautiful harbour by day, but at Christmas time we also have a stunning harbour at night. This is thanks to the hard work, generosity and inventiveness of the boat owners. The Royal Temple Yacht Club arranged a competition for the ‘best dressed’ boats. This year we hope to do the same, but with better prizes.

The Micro Museum Back in the spring
Although the Museum is closed for the winter, we’re busy working behind the scenes to improve the visitor experience for our 2016 season. First, a quick look back at 2015. We have had wonderful moral support from several local people and groups who have helped spread the word about Ramsgate’s very own Computer Museum. We value their continued support. We hope that, at last, the town is starting to accept our Museum as a worthwhile addition to the many, more traditional seaside attractions A heartfelt thank you everyone. Our summer SMILE exhibition proved to be a great success with visitors, some of whom were drawn to the Museum by their interest in photography and who then discovered there is a lot to learn and enjoy about computing too. We have enjoyed showing off the display provided by the talented members of the Royal Harbour Photographic Group and we thank them for taking part. Because of the interest shown by our visitors, we will be keeping a selection of the vintage cameras in the Museum to illustrate the development to digital. In 2016, as part of our ongoing plan to involve the community, we will be opening a Museum Shop. We have invited Thanet artists, craftspeople and other makers of

beautiful things to display their work in the shop to give visitors a chance to buy original work created by local people. Because we don’t do “boring” or “ordinary” and love things that are unique, the twist will be that everything on sale will have a computer, gaming or tech-y theme. Several artists many from Ramsgate - have already accepted the challenge to create pieces (sometimes quite different from their usual work) and we are looking forward to having the only shop of its kind in Kent’s only computer museum. At the time of writing this, we haven’t finalised our opening days and times but we are hoping to be able to admit the public over a longer period next year. The shop will be in our reception area and open to Museum visitors and anyone who just wants to pop in and purchase something special when we are open. We run our Museum because we love sharing with others our interest and knowledge of computing and classic gaming. It gives us immense pleasure to see our visitors learning, reminiscing and having fun when they are with us, so we’ll be back! Thanet Obelisk Awards On November 28, 7.30pm at the King’s Theatre, the third annual “Obelisk Awards Gala Evening” will take place, following the success of the previous two years. We are gaining interest across Thanet and more events and shows are being considered for recognition. The Gala occasion has been set up by Ramsgate’s Starlite Entertainers to acknowledge the talent of the Very Best Actor, Actress, Singers (Male and Female), Show, Event and Lifetime Achievement. The awards follow the lines of TV’s BAFTA & Oscars ceremonies. Like our TV presenters, we also have celebrities of the world of Theatre and Civic Circles. Last year Hollywood Actress, Brenda Blethyn, OBE, presented awards, as well as Mandy Winters, Shirley Greenwood, Joan Le Mesurier, the three Town Mayors (Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate), Councillor Iris Johnston and Mr Margate, Councillor Mike Tomlinson, joined us. Past winners have included Singers Ben Hoenes and Emma Jane Nettlingham, the St. Peter’s Village Tours, the Ellington Park Fair, Suzy Humphries, Phil Spain, Gordon Clarkson and Jean Self. If you are a theatre performer, event or show organiser, please let us know and you may be on the next line up. It is not aimed at professionals and the performance must be in Thanet. There are many nominations for the 2015 show and the results are a secret until the night of the show. There are acts throughout the show with many images of the past year on the big screen, an evening suitable for the whole family. Mayor of Ramsgate Since becoming Mayor on May 20, I’ve attended a number of events across Ramsgate and the surrounding areas. Over the summer Ramsgate held a range of events; Ramsgate Week Sailing Regatta, Sprint Revival and Lark in the Park, to name a few. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in all the events that have taken place. I know how much hard work goes in to these and I’m looking forward to attending many more in the future. So far this year, myself and my Charity Committee have held a number of events to help raise money for my chosen charities and to help promote Ramsgate to other
visiting dignitaries. So far this year we’ve held a Bowls evening at Ramsgate Bowls Club, Afternoon Tea at the Italianate Greenhouse and a Quiz Night at Ramsgate Football Club, and we have raised over £700! My chosen charities for my Mayoral year are the 6th Ramsgate Sea Scouts and the Hornets Boxing Club. Scouting still remains the largest youth movement in the world. They take part in a large number of activities which include power boating, sailing, kayaking, canoeing and residential trips. They now need help with funding so they can purchase some outboard motors for their boats. The Hornets Boxing Club is a community group that cater for all ages and gender. They teach skills, fitness, strength, confidence, discipline, team work and fun. After recently moving to a new venue they are now in need of new changing rooms and toilet facilities. For further information on future charity events please like my Facebook page to be kept up to date. All are welcome to attend. Also, you will find photos from all the events I attend on my page. Having worked on some of the world’s biggest events and exhibitions, Debbie Lee is now set to clean up the homes of Thanet with the launch of her own eco-friendly domestic cleaning and home care business, Bright & Beautiful. Debbie, who lives in Ramsgate, launched her business in August managing a team of cleaners to deliver ethical, professional and eco-friendly housekeeping services that include cleaning, tidying and laundry in the areas of Birchington, Broadstairs, Canterbury, Herne Bay, Margate, Ramsgate & Whitstable and surrounds. Before launching Bright & Beautiful Debbie, 40, had spent 20 years in the exciting exhibition industry, travelling the world including Dubai and the Middle East, and working across Europe. She was also Sales Manager at the Box Office at Earls Court Exhibition Centre and worked her way up from Account Manager to Commercial Director at Global Experience Specialists (GES). Like many women I’ve spent years balancing home, family and work and if anyone knows how to keep a house clean and tidy it has to be a working mum with small children! But I also know how much of a juggling act it can be.

While we all live increasingly busy lives we know from our own research that women are still responsible for the vast majority of housework in the home and almost half of us sacrifice family time to get the housework done. I really want to help give local families their hugely important leisure time back by taking on all of those cleaning, tidying and ironing jobs that eat into their free time and weekends.” Bright & Beautiful is an award-winning business model that was founded by entrepreneur Rachel Ray in 2007. A busy working mum herself, Rachel spotted a gap in the market for a domestic cleaning company that provided full fair employment rights for its team, non-toxic cleaning products and an exceptional housekeeping service for its clients. Since then the business has grown from strength to strength with franchisees around the UK employing carefully vetted professional housekeepers and servicing thousands of clients.

Ralph Hoult Interview
give something back to their town. To quote the words of local resident Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo: “If you should love no one, you should love the Town that you dwell, that is what I do.”
How long have you lived in Ramsgate? 70 years I have been living in Ramsgate. Why did you start helping the local community? I joined the Cubs as an 8 year old back in 1951 on the Newington Estate, Saint Lawrence ‘B’ Pack. A great deal of the training in those days was doing your service to the town and helping others. I stayed with the Scout Movement through Scouts, Senior Scouts and Rovers and on route won the top Scouting Award, the Queen Scout Award, mine was the first in Thanet for seven years. All this ten years of training, stayed with me all my life. I really feel that everybody should
What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? Going to school at Ellington Infants in Ramsgate and having a school photograph taken with my arm around the neck of a very large stuffed German Sheep Dog. I always had a great fear of dogs and it was reflected on my face. What are your ambitions? To carry on as I am with my Theatre and Event production Team, staging many Family Fun Events for Ramsgate. My favourite two being “Make Me A Star” Thanet’s Top Talent Show and a more recent addition our “Thanet Obelisk Award Gala Nights” when we award trophies to all the Top Acts, Shows and Events of Thanet. What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? My on going project is sharing my 4,000 amazing Old Ramsgate Collection of photographs going back to the very first photography nearly 200 years ago.

CLINICARE UK Once a month, on the third Thursday of the Month at 7.30pm, at the King’s of Ramsgate Community Theatre we stage a Nostalgia Evening re-visiting days of Old Nostalgia not a history lesson and supported by up to 180 people. Why did you start this current project? I love the good old days and many people of my age do likewise, are living in the past, some say nostalgia is a thing of the past (joke) but it does prove to be very popular. It all started way back in 1978, when I had the first of my 12 shops (only one at a time) and an old lady wanted to put some old postcards in my window, I only did it to please her, but it was so popular that I copied them and blew them up - photographic enlargements of course - and people came from far and wide to show off their pictures, which I copied and “blew up & displayed”, within 12 months I had over 1,000 views of Ramsgate and staged a photographic exhibition at the Castle Arts Centre on Harbour Parade and it was opened by John LeMesurier - it was the Thanet’s Arts Councils Top Exhibition that year with over 1,000 visitors. Where did you get the idea from to start this? Mrs Gibbens, The Ramsgate Lady with the old postcards. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? More of the same hopefully. How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? All of my activities are mainly for the young to gain experience on the stage and to build their confidence and experience, to raise funding for good causes and entertain family audiences. Where do you see yourself helping the community in a year’s time? Our events are very popular and we will continue them in the future, we also link up with any historical events in the town to stage a suitable event.

The Meaning of life Ramsgate Have you ever thought where some of the street names in Ramsgate originate? Prime Ministers:
From the Napoleonic wars we have:
Henry Addington: Prime Minister 1801 - 1804 (Addington Street).
Picton Road: One of Wellington’s generals.
3rd Duke of Portland: Prime Minister from 1807 - 1809. His family name Cavendish. (Cavendish Street.)
Plains of Waterloo: Commemorating the Battle of Waterloo.
Spencer Percival: Prime Minister from 1809 - 1812. The only Prime Minister to be assassinated. (Spencer Street, Square and Walk).
La Belle Alliance Square: ‘The beautiful friendship’ - The inn that was Napoleon’s HQ during the battle of Waterloo and where Wellington and Blucher met after the battle.
Duke of Wellington: 1828 - 1830 and 1834. (Wellington Crescent).
Duncan Road: Admiral Duncan was the victor at the battle of Camperdown in 1797.
Lord Melbourne: 1834 and 1835 1841. (Melbourne Avenue).
Nelson Crescent: The victor of Trafalgar in 1805.
3rd Marquess of Salisbury: 1886 - 1892 and 1895 - 1902. (Salisbury Avenue).
Collingwood Court: One of Nelson’s ‘band of brothers’ and a distinguished admiral in his own right.
Sir Winston Churchill: 1940 - 1945 and 1951 - 1955. (Churchill Square).
Codrington Road: relates to Admiral Codrington who led the last wooden sailing fleet to victory over the Turkish fleet at Navarino in 1827.
From the Crimean war we have Alma Road and Place which commemorate the battle of that name in 1854.
Finally we have South Eastern Road which commemorates the original South Eastern railway that was the first railway in Ramsgate in 1846.
Royalty always figures highly so we have:
Nowadays names are rather more bland and tend to perpetuate a developer’s need to sell a block of housing so tree or plant names are frequently used.
Augusta Road and Place: there have been three Princess Augusta’s who lived during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Albert Road: Prince Albert, Consort to Queen Victoria. Leopold Road and Street: First King of the Belgians and uncle to Prince Albert.
26
Beresford Road: Commanded the Portuguese forces under Wellington during the peninsula campaign.

Janet Fielding Interview
How long have you lived in Ramsgate? Since 2008, can’t believe it’s been 7 years. Why did you start helping the local community? I blame my local residents association. I lived in Liverpool Lawn when I first arrived and it has a great community feeling. All the houses face each other so you do meet people easily. I saw something that really needed doing. What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? I’d never been to Thanet before I decided to move to the coast. But I wanted to move to a seaside town with sandy beaches and within easy reach of London. A friend told me about Ramsgate so I decided to take a look, I’d never heard of it. I saw that wonderful harbour and it was love at first sight. What are your ambitions? I would like to see a more prosperous town with much more opportunity for young people. I think it is sad that so many of them feel they have to leave Thanet to achieve anything. It’s a wonderful, beautiful place. But it hasn’t always moved with the times and it needs to. I would like to see Thanet introduce a version of Grotbusters. What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? I am working on Project MotorHouse, turning the old motor museum into the type of modern facilities Ramsgate is woefully short of. When it is finished, it will provide a lift from the port level to the cliff top. There will be an outdoor cinema/theatre in the gardens, which will use Bluetooth technology. It will have a flexible theatre that can expand into the function room and will hold up to 350 people. There will be another smaller function

room, offices, bars, a restaurant, a café and three cinemas. We won’t run the businesses ourselves, we will get in anchor tenants with a good track record to run the cinemas, the restaurant etc. It not only spreads our risk but it means local youths have a chance to learn from successful businesses. Why did you start this current project? Thanet District Council had closed the door on the building and were leaving it. The gardens were unsightly and used for anti-social behaviour. People were breaking in and lighting fires. If that building falls or is burnt down then Ramsgate has a huge infrastructure problem. It holds up the road and the Promenade. I approached Thanet District Council in 2010. They told me to go away and put together both an influential board and a business plan, which showed the building could run without revenue funding, so I did. Luckily, I had been Head of Finance at a charity with a million pound turnover. It took 3 years and £10K worth of legal fees for us to sort out the option and transfer deed with Thanet District Council. I was determined to make it work. Then I got cancer and my Doctor Who chums rallied round and helped fundraise. I had no idea the project would take so much work or time. I’ve been told that Dreamland has taken 13 years. The MotorHouse had better not take 13 years. But I have been working on it for 5 years now. Where did you get the idea from to start this? It came from two sources. Thanet District Council insisted on a business plan that meant the building was self-supporting.
We then talked to folk in the local residents associations and incorporated their suggestions. The only problem was when I called the site by its proper title - The West Cliff Hall and Gardens - no one knew what I meant. Everyone called it the old motor museum. So I got together a focus group of young people and one of them called it, The MotorHouse. That’s it we said. The community consultation we held in 2011 gave our ideas the thumbs up so we have ploughed on. Turns out, I’m as obstinate as my mother. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? I do not want to run The MotorHouse when it opens, but I’d love to continue working with the Ellington & Hereson School (now Royal Harbour Academy). I am descended from convicts transported to Australia. The convict sailing ships used to sit off Ramsgate in the Downs waiting for the wind to change. I would like to build a replica convict ship for the harbour and have a museum about transportation.

How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? We have raised about £275K so far and we have propped the frame of the building, the building is now secure and we have stopped people lighting fires in it. Steel shutters had to be made because some people were breaking in from the terrace side. We held a competitive tender and appointed award winning East Kent architect Guy Hollaway to do the design. We are nearly ready to go out to public consultation on the design. The first design was a bit too expensive so we needed to adjust it and redo the costings. Nevertheless, the thing that has given me the biggest buzz to date has been working with and getting to know some of the students from Ellington & Hereson School (now Royal Harbour Academy). They have done fantastic work in helping clear the gardens and they did a wonderful fundraising show called Bringing It Back based around the history of The MotorHouse.
RamsgateTownCouncil Magazine
The depreciation alone is nearly £100K a year and we estimate it will cost another £250-300K a year to run. We knew that the building had failed to be self-supporting both as a concert hall and then as a motor museum. We had to spread the risk so that we were not dependent on any one income stream. It also means we can give young people an experience of different enterprises.
Where do you see yourself helping the community in a years time? I am hoping we will be starting construction and that will probably take a lot of my focus, but we have just applied for funding for a big project we want to do with the Royal Harbour Academy and the SEAS Photography Archive. Jo Mapp will be leading that one, she has put together an incredible team of artist mentors so fingers crossed we get the money.

James McGarry Interview
How long have you lived in Ramsgate? My partner and I both worked in rather hectic advertising agencies in London and wanted a major change in lifestyle. We opted to move to the best town on the South East coast just over eight years ago. Why did you start helping in the local community? My background is in advertising and marketing. I began working at Saatchi and Saatchi as a junior Art Director way back in the 90’s. I thought my experience in these relevant fields could help enhance local projects, events, businesses & community schemes; bringing professional merit to their design, branding, marketing and advertising requirements. What are your earliest memories of Ramsgate? When looking to move from London, it was my partner’s idea to look around the South East coast. She grew up in Scotland not far from the sea and I grew up in Belfast, so was never more than 12 miles from a beach. We did a bit of research and realised the weather

was terrific in this little corner of England, so we made many visits before moving. As a visual landmark and outstanding memory of our first visits here, the iconic power station towers at Richborough were the first real indicators we were near ‘home’. It was rather unfortunate they had to be demolished. What are your ambitions? I thoroughly enjoy the work/life balance I have at present. In the future I may consider starting up an advertising & marketing agency. But for now, growing my design/ advertising business through my network of local contacts is a priority as its always a good idea to walk before you can run. What are you currently working on or towards in Ramsgate? I currently have a few projects on the go, helping various businesses in the town raise their profile. I have just finished a small project for the Defence of the Nation Museum & Education Centre located within the Ramsgate Tunnels. My latest illustration entitled ‘Battle of Britain’ is being sold through the Spitfire & Hurricane Museum at Manston. I’m also in discussion with a

Why did you start this project? I continually work to improve and refine my artistic style. I select various events or upcoming anniversaries then illustrate and design a poster for that event/project/ commemoration. I’m always busy working on the ‘next’ one. The re-design work and other jobs I undertake keep me busy and focussed. Where did you get the idea from to start this project? There have been many WW2 commemorative celebrations this year with the 75th anniversaries of Operation Dynamo and the Battle of Britain taking place; the former, in May, was a big event encompassing the town and the role it played in helping evacuate 338,260 servicemen from Dunkirk. I began the research and composition of the illustration back in January with the poster taking over a month to complete. Most recently, my ‘Battle of Britain’ illustration/ poster took over three weeks from initial concept to finished article. I also accept adhoc commissions so there is always an art project on the go. What can Ramsgate look forward to from you in the future? I always aim to add to my illustrative and design portfolio. My new website has just been built and is available to view online at mcgcreates.com. It carries the most

up-to-date gallery of my work to view and purchase, and will be continually updated with new projects, commissioned works and news. How do you feel your contribution has helped or made a difference to Ramsgate? In my professional capacity, I hope my creative input has helped raise the profile of the businesses I’ve been involved with. Ramsgate, with its rich heritage and diversity has so much potential. The town needs assistance to encourage greater visitor numbers, increased business growth and development, and to elevate its overall visibility. I want my contribution to make a difference; whether we have lived here all our lives, or have chosen this as our town to live, we all want what is best for Ramsgate. Everyone has their capabilities and limitations, so I want to help when I can, where I can and in whatever genre I am asked, either as an advertising professional, or as an artist.

Love your Town In August this year we featured an online interview on the Ramsgate Town website with Art Director, Jim Mc Garry. He moved to Ramsgate in 2007 with his partner after they decided to leave London behind and move to the coast. After viewing various locations in Kent they opted for their favourite, Ramsgate.
“It’s been terrific to move by the sea. Ramsgate has such wonderful architecture and beautiful parklands as well as being surrounded by exceptional countryside. Life here has changed beyond all recognition. I can now concentrate on my art as well as helping in local projects. My experience in design and advertising stretches back over twenty years. So when I’m asked to get involved in promoting a local event, scheme or project, and have the time to do so, I’m more than happy to help out. My first involvement was with the Ramsgate Tunnels back in 2011 and laterly with the Defence of the Nation Museum & Education Centre. In between I have worked with other local companies and businesses.
What has been most energising for me is being able to focus on my art. Having the time to work on my personal illustrations has helped me find a style I am comfortable with. Also the challenge of commissioned work keeps me on my toes. So each piece keeps me invigorated with a sense of fulfilment when completed. In 2014 I created a local newspaper, the ‘Ramsgate Tribune’. It focussed on the varied social, economic, geographic and historical stories of the town. It was enjoyable to create, design and write and I gained a broader insight into what a wonderful place Ramsgate was, is and can be. The strapline for the paper was ‘Love your Town’, and how could you not?”
Jim’s work shown here, along with other artwork & illustrations are available to purchase online at mcgcreates.com and through local outlets in town.

You will find that the majority of English towns and villages are twinned with a similar community abroad. The only difference with Ramsgate is that we are twinned with three foreign towns: Chimay in Belgium, Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in France and Frederikssund in Denmark. Ramsgate’s first venture into twinning started on the 30th June, 1960 when the then Mayor, Councillor Eddie Butcher, together with representatives from the Danish town of Frederikssund signed a declaration of twinning. Viking pithouse food store in Frederikssund and the Danish longship Hugin sailed to Ramsgate in 1949

This was followed on the 21st April, 1979 when Ramsgate’s Mayor, Councillor Terry Cole joined the Mayor of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in France, in a joint declaration that the two towns would in future be twinned. Conflans-Sainte-Honorine across the River Seine and a scene from “Pardon national de la batellerie”.
On the 9th October, 2004 the Mayor of Ramsgate, Councillor Stephen Ward, met with representatives from the Belgium town of Chimay and declared that both towns should be twinned. Town square in Chimay, Belgium and “Bières de Chimay” from the brewery at Scourmont Abbey, a Trappist monastery.
Since then, Ramsgate Twinning Association continues to make and receive visits from all three Twinned Towns. Such links provide each with the opportunity for exchanges to take place which include school children – the most recent interaction between the children of the Twin Towns was a Postal Art Competition which took place over 2014 up until May of 2015, when the Awards were made during the VE Day Celebrations in Conflans. Christ Church School in Ramsgate won the Grand Prix! Visit the link . . . https://flickr.com/photos/mailartjumelage/ – also exchanges with local churches, choirs plus various sports groups. Such exchanges enable us not only to broaden our understanding of how each country may differ from each other, but through friendship links are formed that can last a lifetime. Ramsgate Twinning Association is a lively, thriving organisation that welcomes new members and works constantly to promote Ramsgate at every opportunity. Meetings are held once a month upstairs in the Customs House.
