Charity mobile network brings ‘Donate As You Go’ to Discovery Park An innovative new mobile network, purposely built to support good causes has launched at Discovery Park, potentially raising thousands for cancer and sport related charities. C4C Mobile will donate 10 per cent of the user’s monthly bill spend to a cancer or sport related charity of the customer’s choice at no additional cost or change in behaviour. Powered by phone giant O2, Calls4Charities, the mobile virtual network enabler plans to develop the concept further within the next 12 months, focussing upon development of both a charity brand led network alongside a sports related mobile network. The new network has been a long time ambition of Kent businesswoman Blair Papworth, following her family’s own experiences with battling cancer and the work that charities do. The founder of C4C Mobile, has worked within the mobile telecommunications sector for many years and is looking forward to the challenge of bringing something new to the market. She said: “C4C Mobile is a platform for change.

Deal All Stars FC In 2005, Dan Slaughter decided to form St Margaret’s All Stars FC so that disabled people like Dan’s brother Chris could come together and have fun playing football. Over the years, the club has grown, and two years ago, the club decided to become independent and changed its name to Deal All Stars FC, but the philosophy has remained the same: to help people with disabilities to reach their potential through football and fun. Parents and volunteers run this self-funded team. Deal All Stars FC is an inclusive club and often has social events throughout the year for players and their families.

Two players from the team have gone on to play for Kent and represented their county for two years. One player went on to play for London South East Regional Cerebral Palsy Squad. Our team can help players to go through the FA player pathways or just be happy to have fun kicking a ball around with friends. Each player is individual. Last year Deal All Stars FC supported four players to go on and achieve the FA level 1 coaching course. These coaches are now helping other players. Our team proves that it doesn’t matter what your disability or special educational need is - with the right support and encouragement anything is possible. The team train every Sunday morning down at Castle Community College, Mill Road, Deal.

Ziarco chooses Discovery Park as base for new drug development A biotechnology company is close to getting initial results of patient trials back for a range of new therapies for inflammatory and allergic diseases – with Discovery Park at the heart of its success. Ziarco moved into Discovery Park in April, after an expansion that has seen the venture funded business grow from a team of four to 12, with five staff added since re-locating from its previous Canterbury base. It also calls on a number of external advisors when required.

Chief Development Officer, Dr Lynn Purkins believes Discovery Park offers the best environment for the company’s needs. She said: “We were impressed by the development of the park since 2012 and the number of successful businesses that have joined the site.

The company, which launched in 2012, has used the space to continue developing drugs for the treatment of inflammatory and dermatological diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

“Discovery Park offers us room to grow and a lot of our neighbouring companies have skills and facilities we can work with to further establish the business.”

Clinical trials are underway and initial data is expected during 2016. The company aims to complete further clinical trials with both of its two main compounds with data expected during 2017.

Lynn is positive about Ziarco’s shared mission with their Discovery Park partners. She continued: “We recognised that there were a number of potential life sciences and supporting facilities companies which Ziarco could work with in addition to our existing commercial relationships.”

The team’s roles cover drug development as well as company management and supporting roles. Five staff have been hired since the move to Discovery Park from Ziarco’s previous Canterbury office. CEO Mike Yeadon was formerly the Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer for Pfizer’s Allergy & Respiratory Research Unit at Sandwich, where he helped with the discovery and development of oral and inhaled new chemical entities (NCEs) for a range of respiratory diseases.

Sandwich Decorative And Fine Arts Society SEDFAS meets on the first Monday evening of each month. Our aim is to intrigue, inform and entertain our members about art, architecture, furniture, jewellery, carpets, archaeology and much more.

Vimy Ridge, and a private tour of Bourne Park House near Canterbury to see the exceptional art and furniture collection, which includes paintings by Vandyke and Stubbs. A most successful mid-summer Supper Evening was held in the Guildhall where an Italian style dinner was served. Musical entertainment was provided by Peter Medhurst - an outstanding lecturer, baritone and keyboard performer. A New Members drinks party is held in the autumn and this has proven a very popular occasion, giving new members the chance to meet each other and members of the committee. SEDFAS makes every effort to support Young Arts in Sandwich and this year is sponsoring an Art Exhibition at Roger Manwood’s School during Sandwich Arts Week.

We would be delighted to welcome you at one of our lectures to find out what our Society is all about. The evening starts with a complimentary glass of wine and the chance to meet other like minded people. All the lectures are held in the Guildhall and start at 8pm with refreshments from 7.30pm. The speaker is always someone of standing in his or her particular field. This year our lecture programme has included Cities of Vesuvius, Jewellery of the Renaissance, Goya, the restored city of Dresden, Michelangelo, Art Nouveau and Maritime Art. Apart from the monthly lectures, the Society also offers a number of outings and events during the year. This year we have been “Behind the Scenes” at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, a full day coach tour to France to visit the magnificent new Louvre Gallery at Lens followed by the Canadian WW1 Memorial at 12

The Sandwich Concert Band The Sandwich Concert Band was formed in 2011 by members of the former Pfizer Wind Orchestra; a group which ceased performing following the announcement by Pfizer to close their facility at Sandwich. Despite losing several players who were compelled to relocate, it was felt that there was still a need for a group of this kind in the Sandwich area. The new band was set up as a community organisation constituted through Making Music, an umbrella organisation for voluntary and amateur music, and we found a new home at The Phoenix Centre in Jubilee Road, Sandwich where we have been made very welcome. We continued with two sections in the band: a Concert Band for musicians of at least Grade 5 standard, and a Training Band for less experienced players from approximately Grades 1 or 2.

14

Please mention

Since forming the new band, we have been lucky enough to attract a number of new players to both the Concert Band and the Training Band, and now have a membership of around 40 players. During the year the Sandwich Concert Band performs at 4 or 5 concerts or events, including bandstands and outdoor concerts in the summer, and indoor concerts in local halls or churches when the weather is less favourable. Over the years we have performed at a variety of venues in Sandwich, Ash, Ramsgate, Walmer, Margate, St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe, and also at The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury. The music we play is chosen to suit the occasion but is usually a mixture of marches, classical transcriptions, music from films and shows as well as good symphonic band music. Our current Musical Director, Benedict Preece, is a dynamic, young but experienced conductor,

Sandwich Bird Observatory and Field Centre

Sandwich Bay and its wildlife The Sandwich Bay area has long been recognised for the richness of its wildlife. About 350 different bird species have been recorded in the area, including rare migrants from Europe, Asia and North America. Over 800 plant species can be found, including a number of rare orchids. There are also nationally rare insects including butterflies, moths, dragonflies, bumblebees and beetles and even a thriving seal colony in the mouth of the River Stour.

What we do We are almost entirely an amateur, volunteer organisation, funded by our members. Observatory members study and record the birds that occur here. We also record all other aspects of natural history. Our members range in abilities, from complete beginners to professional experts – but everyone is welcome. There is a full club and social calendar with talks, holidays and social events and a programme of guided walks throughout the year. Nonmembers are welcome to join these. Visitors are very welcome to call in at our Field Centre and see what we do and to look around our displays – mornings are best. Snacks and drinks are available and our shop sells a variety of items for the wildlife enthusiast. We can also offer self-catering accommodation at very reasonable rates. 16

Please mention

How to find us We are situated off Guilford Road on Sandwich Bay Estate. If you are coming by car, follow the signs from Sandwich town. There is a toll-gate entrance to gain admission to the private Estate, but if you make it clear that you are visiting the Observatory, the toll-keepers will allow you in for £1, as opposed to the usual £7. After going through the toll-gate, drive for a couple of hundred metres and we are a short distance up a track on the right.

Out and about around Sandwich Bay Estate: Sandwich Bay Estate is a private residential area and access is limited to the few public footpaths and other rights of way. Visitors are asked to respect the Estate residents’ privacy and to keep to these routes. Further information is available in the Observatory building.

Sandwich Port & Haven Standing on the quayside watching all the tides go by With acknowledgement to Herman and Boys and Frank Loesser And so it has been for millennia. The tides come in – and the tides go out, passing the ancient town of Sandwich twice every day – the muddy waters carrying the muds of history for it’s cargo, and now bearing the pursuits of leisure in lieu of the trade this famous port was once so heavily and richly engaged.

Haven Commissioners to enable the activities taking place within The Haven. More recently The Harbours Act of 1964 updated earlier Legislation, consolidating and repealing components in course of that updating.

Trade began in earnest with the coming of the Romans in AD 43. Sandwich being little more than a sandy hillock where the wide Wantsum River narrowed at it’s mouth to the sea - at the southern end of the shingle spit of Stonar Bank. It was on this shingle spit that the ancient Saxon town of Stonar came into being, remaining a place of great importance until it disappeared with little trace in the 14th century – a surge tide doubtless the culprit.

The review concluded that the concept of a trust port had stood the test of time and continues to perform a valuable role in support of the local, regional and national economy. However, it highlighted a need for general improvement in the openness and accountability with which trusts conducted their business. Sandwich Port and Haven being a Trust Port (as is Dover - but a major one), is not required to conform to the more stringent DETR aspirations of the larger ports but it does strive to be open and accountable.

In 1155 a Royal Charter established the Cinque Ports - of which Sandwich is one - to maintain ships ready for the Crown, in providing 57 ships for 15 days’ service to the king annually. Each port to fulfil a proportion of the whole duty. The towns in return received considerable privileges. The young town of Sandwich, by now already in existence for some time, received Prince Louis of France on 21 May 1216, here in support of the barons’ war against King John of England. Then as time went by the port of Sandwich came under the control of the towns council, reinforced by Act of Parliament in 1749 as part of an Act for the enlargement of Ramsgate Harbour. In 1925 an Act of Parliament was enacted that modified powers to the Port and 18

Then in 1998 a review of Trust Ports was undertaken by DETR Ports Division.

So what DOES the Sandwich Port and Haven do for the community – that is ‘The Stakeholders’? Well, to begin with the Port and Haven is administered by a board of Commissioners. These are appointed by Dover District Council. At present they are: John Bragg (Chairman), Robert Holden (Vice Chairman), Pip Russell, Jill Griffiths, Tim Laughlin, Jeremy Watts, Joe Trussler, Bernard Butcher and James Blackmore. All are unpaid volunteers. Paid staff comprise The Harbour Master Captain Colin Carr and the Clerk to the Commissioners Mrs. Andrea Kelly. Magazine when responding to advertisements

Sandwich

The Commissioners function is to see that the waters of The Haven are managed according to statute, and that the laws and regulations are properly upheld according to the various Acts of Parliament mentioned above - for the benefit of The Stakeholders. In return an annual Conservancy Fee of just £60 is levied on all craft. This is subject to review each year, which for 2016 will see a reduction to £55. The list is not exhaustive but ‘The Stakeholders’ would include Highway Marine, Sandwich Marina, Sandwich Sailing and Motor Boat Club and the afloat users of those facilities. Also Dover District Council (Sandwich town quay), Kent County Council (the swing bridge), Kent Trust for Nature Conservation and, importantly, the citizens of Sandwich. Now that commercial use of the river has finally ceased after 2000 or more years, leisure use has come to replace that loss. The Commissioners are acutely aware of such a complete change of use and endeavour to support the new activities. A factor affecting the loss of commercial use is the ever changing meandering nature of the mouth of the river. On behalf of the users the Commissioners have this year implemented a complete – and expensive - re buoying of the river mouth to the approval of Trinity House. The buoyage customarily being reviewed in the spring of each year and the buoys and marks moved accordingly. Another activity of The Commissioners has been working with the Environment Agency in progressing the new Sandwich Tidal Defence scheme. Part of which involved temporary closure of the river above the bridge whilst river bank piling was installed. Never have there been so many Notices to Mariners (NtMs)!

An inspired community facility…

The Gazen Project The Club Chairman, John Jones, had regarded the upgrading of the facilities at the Gazen Pavilion for several years as important in providing cricketing facilities commensurate of a Kent Premier League Club and to the users in the wider community. This was moved sharply up the agenda when long term access to the Butts came under threat due to adjacent site development. It was in April 2012 that serious enquiries got underway and it quickly became apparent that progress would not be straightforward. This view was confirmed when the Architects for the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) produced an initial estimate of £500,000 for a new facility. This was then reduced by more than 50% to £211,000 – still way beyond the club’s resources. During the following weeks a number of meetings took place but all led to an inevitable cul de sac. In August the decision was taken to pursue the project in-house. The club was extremely fortunate to have amongst its ranks David Rigden, recently retired as a professional Building Project Manager and by early September he had produced a new build scheme to cost under £155,000.

making bodies for financial support. The early outcomes were not encouraging, particularly from the Football Foundation, who wished to impose numerous conditions on the design. Paul Goatham, another club stalwart had now joined the team, along with the Treasurer Clive Thurgate. Countless hours of voluntary work, including many meetings followed over the next twelve months, gradually refining the design and working at grant aid possibilities. Decision time was reached at the end of 2013 when a two stage scheme was finalised. Stage 1- a

Further significant progress was made in September when a partnership with Dover District Council (DDC) was agreed. As the club Landlord they would contribute towards planning costs and assist with the design. In the meantime the club had commenced the time consuming procedure of applying to the various grant 20

new build extension to the front of the existing building at an estimated cost of £95,000 + VAT, followed by Stage 2 – refurbishment of the existing building and decoration throughout at a further cost of £26,000 + VAT. On 13th December 2013 our application for grant aid to Sport England, our third attempt under their Inspired Facilities scheme, was submitted. Three months almost to the day passed before we received the welcome news that we had been successful and a grant of £50,000 would be forthcoming. More good news followed when we learnt that the club was to receive a bequest from the Estate of the late Phil Green, a long time member of the club who had died the previous September. A month later, April 2014, Phase 1 of the project went out to tender. The cricket season was now upon us but dates were set for work to start in September. The winter weather, coupled with the work on the adjacent flood defence scheme caused some delays but, by 10th February 2015, this Phase was completed almost on time and within the budget. A week later Phase 2 got underway. Here we were assisted by staff and students of the East Kent College, who were able to practise their various skills such as bricklaying, tiling and decorating. When they departed a number of club members volunteered to help with the finishing touches and by 25th April 2015 the first match of the season was played. The scheme was not quite complete as the club had taken the opportunity of running a parallel

Appeal to raise money to provide a garden and patio area in memory of Life Member Ivan Castle, who was associated with the club for almost sixty years. This separate project was completed to incorporate an entrance road and gate, to enhance the overall facility. A long and often rocky road brought to a successful conclusion through the hard work and dedication of a small group of club members. The official opening of the facility took place on Sunday 20th September, a beautiful autuminal day befitting the occasion, when a plaque was unveiled by Cllr. Sue Chandler, Chairman of Dover District Council. Almost 150 guests and club members including the Mayor of Sandwich Cllr. Paul Graeme & Mrs. Betty Castle attended a buffet lunch & were then able to watch a 20/20 match between the President`s (Leslie Nower) X1 and a Sandwich Town team. During the opening ceremony two memorial plaques were unveiled one to the late Phil Green by The Mayor and the other by Mrs Castle to her late husband.

The Phoenix Community Centre

The Phoenix Centre was established in 1967 as the Sandwich Youth & Community Recreation Club, by the Sandwich Borough Council. Over the years the Centre has changed and evolved a great deal, always serving the local community. In 2006, new Trustees worked with community groups on plans to refurbish the Centre and it was renamed The Phoenix Centre. Since that time it has gone from strength to strength. It still serves the local community, and it still hosts a youth project but it is a very different building. We are now a fully independent Community Centre and Registered Charity, and we are entirely volunteer led and run. We receive no funding for the running of the venue from Town, District or County Councils; we survive on

our hire income, fundraising and donations. The Centre is very ‘green’ - our environmental ethos is supported by our user groups and over the years we have found that environmental sustainability goes hand in hand with financial sustainability. The building was refurbished to high environmental standards, using large volumes of recycled materials, waterless urinals, a rain water harvesting system, sustainable timber, and large amounts of insulation. We even have a ‘green’, biodiverse roof. If the environment is important to you, we are an excellent venue to use. We are proud of our venue and we work hard to maintain standards for all user groups. This is reflected in the long list of Awards the Centre

The White Mill at the White Mill Rural Heritage Centre, near the largely intact mediaeval Cinque Port of Sandwich in east Kent, was built in 1760 and still has most of its original wooden machinery. We are run and supported entirely by volunteers who give their time and skills completely free of charge. The site has many original outbuildings that house examples of old wood working (the wheelwright’s workshop), metal working (the blacksmith’s forge workshop), and the cobbler’s workshops, plus a fine example of a cowshed from the period. All these, and the artefacts contained within them require constant maintenance and attention. And it is all done by volunteers. Ten tips Sandwich

to make your new year’s resolution a success Most of us will make a new year’s resolution - maybe to lose weight, quit smoking or drink less - but only one in 10 of us will achieve our goal. Psychologists have found we’re more likely to succeed if we break our resolution into smaller goals that are specific, measurable and time-based.

“Many of these ideas are frequently recommended by self-help experts but our results suggest that they simply don’t work,” says Prof Wiseman.

Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, tracked 5,000 people as they attempted to achieve their New Year’s resolutions.

“If you are trying to lose weight, it’s not enough to stick a picture of a model on your fridge or fantasise about being slimmer.”

His team found that those who failed tended not to have a plan, which made their resolution soon feel like a mountain to climb. Some focused too much on the downside of not achieveing their goal, adopted role models, fantasised about their goal or relied on will power alone.

He said the 10% of participants in the study who had achieved their target broke their goal into smaller goals and felt a sense of achievement when they achieved these. “Many of the most successful techniques involve making a plan and helping yourself stick to it,” says Prof Wiseman.

goal-setting tips Prof Wiseman’s top 10 tips to achieving your new year’s resolution: 1 Make only one resolution. Your chances of success are greater when you channel energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour. 2 Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to think about your resolution and instead take some time out a few days before and reflect upon what you really want to achieve. 3 Avoid previous resolutions. Deciding to revisit a past resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment. 4 Don’t run with the crowd and go with the usual resolutions. Instead think about what you really want out of life. 5 Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and time-based. 6 Tell your friends and family about your goals. You’re more likely to get support and want to avoid failure. 7 Regularly remind yourself of the benefits associated with achieving your goals by creating a checklist of how life would be better once you obtain your aim. 8 Give yourself a small reward whenever you achieve a sub-goal, thus maintaining motivation and a sense of progress. 9 Make your plans and progress concrete by keeping a handwritten journal, completing a computer spreadsheet or covering a notice board with graphs or pictures.

10 Expect to revert to your old habits from time to time. Treat any failure as a temporary setback rather than a reason to give up altogether. Please mention

Working out a repayment It’s crucial to work out the total cost of the credit you’re taking out, including interest payments, and not just the amount you’re borrowing or how much you can afford to pay every month. Taking the time to work out the full cost of any borrowing lets you plan your finances and ensure that you really can afford it.

What affects your borrowing costs How much you’ll pay to borrow money depends on how much you need and how quickly you plan to repay it. For example, if you want to borrow a small amount over a short period of time with a low interest rate, you may well pay very little interest (or none at all if you use a credit card charging 0% interest). On the other hand, borrowing a large amount of money over a long time will cost you more. In general, use the APR to compare products. The lower the APR the better, but also look at how much it will cost overall. This will usually be more for a longer-term loan even if the APR is less, and will show as the total amount payable. Find out more on deciding the best type of credit for you.

Borrowing options Let’s look at an example. John needs to borrow £1,000 to replace his old boiler. He gets a quote from a big energy company for the boiler and the installation, including paying back the cost over two years. However, when he reads the contract he notices that if he takes out their credit for two years he will pay more than £300 in interest. John looks around at other options. As he has a

In the end, John takes a look at his monthly budget and decides that he can afford to take out the credit card and pay the extra £10.76 each month to avoid having to pay any interest. It means he will have paid off the balance in 15 months and he won’t have been charged interest. John will only save money because he knows he can make the payments within the 15 months. If you don’t think you would be able to do that, a credit card could cost you more. What this table shows is the difference in repayment plans over different periods of time

and how being able to pay a little more each month may mean you’re able to take out a much cheaper form of credit. It also highlights the importance of shopping around for credit and not just taking the first product you are offered. Always spend some time shopping around for credit. Use comparison websites to look at different deals. Be aware of any extra charges or fees. All loans should tell you how much you will pay back overall, including any interest.
