Sittingbourne’s very own

museum Sittingbourne has had a museum since 1999 but still there are many people who either don’t know about it or where to find it. Located at 67 East Street, Sittingbourne Heritage Museum is split over two levels and several rooms. The museum houses many objects from Sittingbourne and the surrounding villages which have been donated or loaned by local residents and other museums. We are able to have regularly changing displays, as well as our more permanent features such as ‘The Plough‘ finds cabinet of late medieval items rescued from the demolished public house, which once stood opposite the museum. This year will see an overhaul of our lower floor displays, so even if you have visited before, there will be a host of new, as yet unseen, items from the museum’s extensive collection. As well as being open to

the public, visits from school parties are also a regular event. But there is more to the museum than just displays. Behind the scenes, researchers are peering into the town’s past, and then producing highly respected books on various topics. Our most recent publication was a new edition of our popular ‘Inns and Pubs of Sittingbourne’. New books are constantly being prepared and always worth the wait. These books and many more are available in our small shop which forms an integral part of the museum. Entry to the museum is free.

Opening times Late February to April: 13.30 to 16.00 Tuesdays and Thursdays; 11.00 to 14.00 Saturdays April to October: 13.30 to 16.00 Tuesday and Thursdays; 10.00 to 16.00 Saturdays October to December: 13.30 to 16.00 Tuesday and Thursdays;11.00-14.00 Saturdays Not Open Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Sittingbourne’s

Steam Railway Steam locomotives Premier and Leader took over operation of Edward Lloyd’s paper mill horse-powered tramway at Sittingbourne moving wagons of raw materials and finished products between the wharf at the end of Milton Creek and the mill itself. Thames Barges would take the finished product to London for that night’s printing presses to produce the next day’s newspapers.

last steam operated narrow gauge industrial railway in the UK. Steam locomotives Premier, Leader, Melior, Triumph, Alpha, Superb and Unique remain at what became the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, in 1972, as does Bowater’s sole diesel loco (now named Victor after the only scrapped steam loco). Another two diesel locomotives have joined the fleet since then.

The creek kept silting up so an extension was planned to connect Sittingbourne Mill with a new dock at Ridham but the First World War slowed work and The Admiralty took over operations at Ridham Dock for the duration. Post-war the extension was completed, including the kilometre-long reinforced concrete Milton Regis Viaduct, which was under construction 100 years ago this year.

The Railway was forced to close, by its landlords, in 2008 to allow for the sale of Sittingbourne Paper Mill and the ‘service corridor’ (the route of the Railway) but reopened to Milton Regis (Asda) Halt in 2010 and to Sittingbourne Viaduct in 2012, after the demolition of the mill and the pipelines across the site. The Railway is here to stay, so why not come along and support the last reminder of Sittingbourne’s paper making past.

In the 1920s the world’s biggest paper mill (at that time, but still Britain’s largest) was built at Kemsley Down, a new ‘workers’ town’ was started to be built close by and became Kemsley Village.

What’s happening

The locomotive fleet grew and, in the Railway heyday, in the 1950s saw 13 steam and one diesel locomotive operating the vast network at and between the two mills and Ridham Dock. There was a 24 hour passenger (for workers) and freight service almost all year round. In 1969, the ‘main line’ section of Bowater’s Light Railway was handed over to the Locomotive Club of Great Britain for preservation, it was the 8

Trains leave Sittingbourne Viaduct hourly 11am - 4pm. The End of Season Gala Weekend sees the Season end in style on 26/27th September. along the Saxon Shore Way from Kemsley Down or you may wish to ride on the trains all day, single and rover fares are available. Special fares apply for Steam & Beer. This Season, trains will be hauled by steam locomotives ‘Leader’ (an 0-4-2 saddle tank engine, built in 1905 by Kerr Stuart), ‘Melior’ (an improved 0-4-2 saddle tank, built in 1924 by Kerr Stuart) and ‘Superb’ (an 0-6-2 tank engine, built by WG Bagnall in 1940). Many passengers know them as ‘the red one’, ‘the little green one’ and ‘the big green one’ respectively! The Railway is run entirely by volunteers, who pay a membership fee which gives them free travel, insurance, a quarterly in-house magazine and the

opportunity to make our passengers happy! Sittingbourne Viaduct station has been vandalised over the years and the burning down of the last two buildings has left a blank canvas, an SOS Campaign (Sort Out Sittingbourne) has been launched to raise money for vital improvements to the station, including an additional platform. To raise money, a classic railway related movie is being shown every month at The Avenue Theatre in Sittingbourne visit www.sklr.net/sos-film-nights. So, where is Sittingbourne’s Steam Railway? Sittingbourne Viaduct station is about five minutes walk from the National Rail station and easy to get to by road as it is within Sittingbourne Retail Park, the Railway’s free car park is behind KFC from the road alongside McDonalds. If you use a Sat. Nav. the address is The Wall and the postcode is ME10 2XD. Unfortunately, due to repeated vandalism, Milton Regis (Asda) Halt is currently closed to the public.

The central place Central Park Stadium in Sittingbourne is home to the Kent SLYDE Kings Speedway club and Mondays from April to September there’s no question that it’s the place to be to see this hugely exciting form of motorcycle racing! Speedway is a unique form of motor sport for a number of reasons. Firstly it’s a team sport and the Kent SLYDE Kings are members of the National League – a division which does what it says on the tin, so-to-speak, with teams from Eastbourne to Birmingham, Buxton to King’s Lynn ensuring that fans get to see some hugely exciting matches during the season with the SLYDE-sponsored Kings’ competing in three main competitions: the National League (comprising 10 sides), the National Trophy and the National Knock Out Cup. Each match sees two teams of seven riders compete in 15 heats aiming to outscore their opponents – there are four riders in each four lap race, fought out over a 270 metres long dirt track oval on 500cc motor bikes with no brakes. Yes, that’s right: NO BRAKES! So with super-fast acceleration tearing away from the tapes, the way to negotiate the tight bends is literally to throw the machines into a controlled slide leading to thrills and spills and some breathtaking passes. That’s the

second thing that’s unique about the sport – more than any type of motorsport (where machinery specification often dominates), with Speedway it’s very much a fusion of man and machine with athleticism, bravery and balance being the chief characteristics needed to succeed. Plus perhaps a certain amount of madness! he other third thing which is unique is that Speedway takes part inside a stadium where spectators can see ALL the action ALL of the time – Central Park has brilliant viewing lines and a superbly well-appointed main grandstand with all the facilities you could want: so families can enjoy the superb spectacle of Speedway racing in comfort and not miss a second of the non-stop action!

Speedway came to the UK from its origins Down Under in Australia all the way back in the late 1920s and over the years has been contested over the decades in some of the country’s top stadiums – Wembley, Stamford Bridge, London’s White City, the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff - and at much-missed circuits in Kent like the old Kingsmead Stadium in Canterbury and Crayford Stadium. Speedway remains a worldwide sport watched by hundreds of thousands across Europe and with the sport having returned in 2013 to one of its main spiritual homes in Kent, Central Park has established itself as one of the top venues to see this sport in the UK. The normal League racing takes place on Monday evenings with a 6.30pm start time (gates open at 5pm) – and with fantastic food outlets in the stadium it’s an ideal place to bring the family after work to enjoy a great night out. And on Bank Holiday Mondays, the action shifts to an afternoon slot with something special – 3pm the tapes are up on Bank Holidays (gates at 1.30pm)

Sittingbourne Football Club Sittingbourne Football Club, the Senior football team in the area, now play at what is termed step 4 of the senior football pyramid, meaning four promotions to the football league (only 7 from the Premier League!). The club was formed in its present state in 1888 after a meeting of local footballers decided that the Sittingbourne and Nil Desperandums clubs merged. The club acquired the famous “Bull Ground” in January 1954 thanks to a £3000 loan from the FA and the supporters association. Jumping forward 4 years to 1958 and a crowd of 10,066 saw the “Brickies” as the club is known (or the Bourne!) saw them win the Kent senior Cup beating Ramsgate 1-0 in Gillingham. In February 1990, Sittingbourne FC made what was probably the most important decision in their history when they opted to sell the Bull Ground to the Co-op – who subsequently sold it onto Sainsbury’s whose supermarket is still on the site. The club then moved to what is now known as Central Park on the Eurolink estate. The site

Please mention

was 23 acres in all and the club built a 2000 seat stand there with executive boxes, executive lounge, boardroom. Restaurants and bars and a sports hall. Greyhound racing was introduced in 1994, (and is still taking place today). These very early 90’s were a successful time for the club. With the magnificent facilities and promotion in the 1990/91 season, the club’s first at Central Park, Sittingbourne became the Winston lead Kent League Champions, remaining unbeaten throughout their entire league campaign. This was a record for that season as Sittingbourne were the only senior club in Europe to remain unbeaten within their own respective league. This was followed by more success with a further promotion in season 1992/3 to the Southern League Premier division, (Then the Beazer Homes League.) The pinnacle of these times was probably the attendance for a friendly of 5,951 turning up to watch a friendly against Tottenham Hotspur. BBC Television at this time referred to Sittingbourne as “The Manchester United of non-league football”. L

Sittingbourne Football Club (continued)

L Sadly serious financial problems were just around the corner as it was revealed that not only had the club spent the £4.5 Million that they had received for the Bull ground, but as further £1M as well. The club lost the ground but Roger Caerns, who had signed a lease with Swale Council to continue Greyhound racing, in turn allowed Sittingbourne FC to sign a 7 year lease. These were still hard times though and the tide didn’t turn until the 1998/99 season when local builder Andy Spice took over as Chairman with a new committee. In the summer of 2002 the club signed a new lease, this time to play on what was the training pitch at Central Park to be known as Bourne Park, but although there followed a more stable period it was clear in 2012 that the club could no longer afford to stay at the Central Park complex so in stepped Maurice Dunk, who is one of the partners at the Woodstock club, and he offered the club a new home at Woodstock for the 2012-13 season. The Pitts twins, John and Peter, plus John Cooper are giving the club stability (they have been involved since the early Andy Spice days) now aided by Ken Medwyn and members of the Woodstock club. Gates are around the 120 mark, a figure that the committee are trying their hardest to improve. As Woodstock is out of town the club runs a free mini bus 16

service for most home games, and to some away games, (a small fee is asked for Away games), and the fantastic Woodstock club facilities (including restaurant) are open to all fans. This season finished with Sittingbourne exactly half way in the table, finishing 12th out of 24 clubs. Next Season there are plenty of local Kent derbies for fans to look forward to in the Ryman League Division 1 South where the club now plays including those against neighbours Faversham Town, Folkestone Invicta, Ramsgate, Herne Bay, Hythe Town and quite possibly in the new season Chatham Town. The committee will be busy in the close season improving facilities, and help with the work is always welcomed! The club has a successful lottery that helps to fund the running of the team, and it is also hoped to have an academy, in conjunction with Bexley College and Gillingham FC, up and running for the new season.

We have worked for a company called Event Plan who organize events for English Heritage and National Trust and also supported Bletchley Park for 6 years as they raised money to maintain an important historic site. At present we are part of a South East WW11 reenactment group call ‘Forward to Victory’ who represent a war time village. We support shows such as ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Military Odyssey’ and attend events at Dover Castle and Museum of Kent Life to name a few. We are passionate about preserving History and have spent the past 2 years restoring a house in East Street Sittingbourne which was once a L Please mention

The Old Forge (continued) L forge, back to how it would have been in war time Britain. The house consists of a living room, dinning room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, ARP office and a garden with Anderson Shelter. The house and garden are filled with original furniture and artefacts and it is brought to life by experienced re-enactors. Our vision is to grow the Living History Museum to include facilities where we will run educational workshops. Classes will be available for children of school age including key stage 2. Educational visits will also be available for those in further education and other groups. We will include informational demonstrations on subjects like ‘Make do and Mend’ and cooking from the garden and on Rations as well as workshops where people can learn skills that have been forgotten. These classes will be available to everyone.

As our community connects with the past it helps keep our heritage alive and understand the importance of World War 2 and how it has shaped the world in which we live today. At the moment we open to the public on the first Saturday of every month. Each month is themed and we explore different aspects of life on the Home Front. We also have private and educational visits, at present 5 schools have visited and they will learn about things like Rationing and evacuation and Life living through WW11 to go along with key stage 2 learning. One of the things we are trying to achieve at the moment is to erect a building up at the back to have a WW11 tea room on open days and a place where we can run work shops for schools and other age groups.

Can you help? This year we are trying to raise £2000 as we need to construct a wooden building at the top of the ‘dig for victory garden’. It will be for school visits as a lunch room and somewhere to hold workshops / classes. On open days it will be open as a tea room and through the week we will run demonstrations and workshops, or any other events. We will be raising the money ourselves through events, boot fairs, tea dances and we’re having some individuals and businesses donate. Our first event is a community sponsored beach clean at Minster. We have had the go ahead from the council and now we just need to pick a suitable date. All those taking part will be dressed in 1940s attire and we’re going to have our old deck chairs out so it will be like a big 1940s style beach party (complete with Ginger beer and of course a few hankies on heads!) Anyone can join us it will be lots of fun. A local family run business on the Island has said they will supply and fit the building at a reduction because it is a community project. Any business that supports us or donates will be advertised on our website. We would be grateful for any support in raising awareness of the events we have planned. Thank you

Sittingbourne Striders Running & Triathlon Club

Three friends who had started to run together decided to form a club as there were no running clubs in the Sittingbourne area. The club was formed in February 1986 and was named as Sittingbourne Striders with club vest colours of a white background with black wording. They affiliated the club to the relevant athletics organisations and gradually increased the membership. Members trained on a Tuesday night and Sunday morning and took part in local and some races further afield. Some years later it was decided to change the club colours to maroon with a gold diagonal stripe and gold lettering. The club held a fun run for some years from the SCC School then in 1992 decided to hold a 10 mile race and fun run using Highsted School as the venue which has been held every year since then. The club and its members have raised money for various charities and continue to do this every year. Our main local charity is

22

Demelza. Two years ago some members who had joined us were keen triathletes and asked to form a Trisection. The club agreed and is now an affiliated member of the BTF. The club currently has running training meetings on Tuesday & Thursday evenings and Sunday morning. Swimming sessions for the triathletes take place on Monday evenings and cycling trips on Saturday mornings. This year our 10 mile race takes place on the 4th October and forms part of the Kent Grand Prix. Currently we have 200 members (min age is 17). Some will take part in the Virgin London Marathon and Brighton Marathon in April. Members also take part in Running & Triathlon races abroad.

The hidden history of Sittingbourne’s woodlands Sittingbourne can boast a project that will focus on offering opportunities for learning about woodland heritage, particularly to communities around Rose Hill Wood and The Meads Community Woodland found at the western edge of Sittingbourne. These two woodlands are now important green spaces for wildlife and people but have an incredible history that stretches back almost 5000 years. The Meads Community Woodland was even the site of an ancient post henge monument – a wooden version of Stonehenge. More recent, but of personal significance to many people we’ve met, is Rose Hill Wood which was the site of Rose Hill House, only destroyed in the late 1970s after safety concerns.

26

Please mention

The project will investigate the remains of the house with the help of expert archaeologists. The project is being run by the Mid Kent Downs Countryside Partnership (MKDCP) will give people the chance to find out more about the wildlife and historic uses of wood and woodland with further events taking place at important woodland sites in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There will also be the chance to get stuck in at archaeological digs and to take an active part in the management of woodland for wildlife. We are keen for people to not only find out more about the places that they live and visit but also to get involved. If you are interested in finding out more or coming along to some of the events please get in touch using the contact details below right. Grove Park Primary School will also be involved with the project and have the chance to learn about the hidden history on their doorstep.

Sally Evans, Manager of MKDCP said: ‘ This is an amazing opportunity to make a huge difference to how people perceive the land around them; linking the small ‘scraps’ of woodland in the town to their rural heritage and the uses of woodlands throughout the landscape. The project really emphasises our key aim to ‘Link People, Land and Nature’. We’re really excited to build on the successes of the project so far!’ Preliminary digs at Rose Hill have shown that there is a lot more to be found and volunteers have already started work on improving the woodlands for wildlife as well as having a community clean-up day.

The Wisdom Hospice The Wisdom Hospice was opened in October 1984 by Her Majesty the Queen as a result of the commitment of local people. It is named after Molly Wisdom, a local visionary and cancer sufferer, who recognised the need for a hospice. Molly started the fundraising drive by raising the first £2,000; the same amount the charity, The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice need to raise each and every day. The Wisdom Hospice, at any one time, supports more than 400 patients, their families and carers either in their own homes or at the hospice in High Bank, Rochester. It is the only adult hospice serving the 350,000 residents of Medway and Swale with a 15-bed inpatient unit and 60 places available per week in its Day Hospice. Operated by Medway Community Healthcare, it has a team of more than 80 staff, who work

within the hospice and wider community. Providing this care costs £2.2m annually. In 2015, The Friends and supporters of The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice will contribute a grant of £600,000. This money goes toward hospice running costs and providing services that fall outside of the NHS budget. We rely on the community we serve to support our fundraising activities and were delighted to host our first Colour Me Purple 5k Run on Sunday 22nd March at Milton Creek Country Park in Sittingbourne with 600 people taking part. Martyn Reeves, Chief Executive of The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice, said: “It was an incredible morning with such a brilliant atmosphere, andit was so exciting to watch our biggest event in Swale unfold. We’d like to thank Colour Station sponsors Swale Borough Council, Swale Community Leisure Ltd and COOK Kitchen, Snap Fitness for warming up the runners, HSS Hire for providing safety barriers and a generator, Asda Sittingbourne for donating bottles of water, Julian Austin at Sittingbourne Balloons for providing an amazing balloon archway and Andy Brown from the Patriotic Pig for donating a percentage of his proceeds on the day.

Together we brightened up Sittingbourne and the explosion of colour was fantastic. The event has already raised an amazing £26,000! Thank you to everyone who helped us achieve this total.” If you would like to come along to a Friends’ fundraising event, why not join us for a Night at the Dogs at Sittingbourne Greyhounds on Thursday, November 12th? Tickets cost £20 per person and the price includes supper and the chance to win a bottle of wine if your allocated greyhound wins their race.

Westlands Primary rated ‘GOOD’ by Ofsted On the 20th and 21st of May, Westlands Primary School was visited by Ofsted inspectors. Following the inspection, Westlands Primary School was awarded a ‘GOOD’ rating by Ofsted on the 8th June (date of report release). The report is a superb achievement by the school, which has undergone numerous changes since its most recent Ofsted for which it was rated ‘Inadequate’. For a school to transform from such a previous rating to ‘GOOD’, almost ‘Outstanding’, is a testament to the attitude and determination of the staff and leadership who have undertaken such a tremendous task and emerged victorious.

A ‘Good’ grading is described by Ofsted as referring to the school as being: “effective in delivering outcomes that provide well for all its pupils’ needs. Pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education, training or employment.” The inspection lasted the 2 full days with inspectors examining every detail of the school, its staff and pupils. The leadership and management of the school was graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. The inspectors noted that much of the school’s recent success was due to key changes implemented by an exemplary leadership team: “Leaders, managers and governors are uncompromising in their pursuit of excellence.” (Ofsted, May 2015) The report went on to say Westlands Primary’s leaders had “taken decisive action to bring about rapid improvement in a relatively short period of time” and that “the school has improved rapidly since the previous inspection because of determined and ambitious leaders who have brought out the best in staff and pupils.”
