Going the Distance Take part in our new London event on Sunday 20th September 2015 to help spinal cord injured people rebuild lives after injury Going the Distance is an inclusive eight mile event that will take place on 20 September 2015 in London. The event will see participants enjoy the famous views from the Thames and over some of London’s most iconic bridges. It’s an event that everyone can take part in as they show their support of Spinal injuries Association, by gaining sponsorship for their efforts in walking, running or wheeling around the course. The route will start at the Victoria Embankment Gardens and we will have a shorter 4 mile route, designed for families to tackle as a team. Want to take part in Going the Distance, while raising money for charity?
Everyone is welcome to take part and Registration is £10 per adult, £5.00 per child, £5.00 and £25.00 per family entry. We are not asking for a minimum sponsorship we ask that you try and raise as much as you can to support SIA’s vital services. SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing your exclusive Going the Distance T-shirt, sponsorship forms and information. On event day there will also be a goodie bag to collect from the start. The money raised from Going the Distance will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury. Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone. For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 01908 208541 or email fundraising@spinal.co.uk Find more information and register at www.spinal.co.uk/page/goingthedistance

Over The Dome on Four Wheels In memory of a great friend Two patients from Chelmsford-based The J’s Hospice bravely led a team of carers and supporters in a climb over London’s O2 on 30th June in the blistering sunshine to raise muchneeded funds for The J’s Hospice. Patient William Creasey, from Romford, was the brains behind the expedition – knowing that his J’s Carer Mark Cannon is afraid of heights! William had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and was the one of the oldest living patients with this condition in the UK. Unfortunately he passed away earlier this year, before he could make his O2 dream a reality. William made lots of friends through the social activities organised by The J’s Hospice, including patients Robert Smith and Lee

Cracknell. These friends wanted to continue planning their O2 challenge and take part in it in William’s memory, along with William’s sister Diane Reynolds, his aunt Thelma Allen and friends and supporters from The J’s Hospice. Robert suffers from a brain tumour and whilst he is mobile, Lee is wheelchair-bound, making this a logistically challenging trip! The O2 team made every effort to balance the necessary safety needs with the team’s desire to achieve William’s dream. Whilst William had an active life with his family before being introduced to The J’s Hospice he was somewhat isolated from people his own age, other than his family members. The J’s introduced a new facet into William’s life, and through Inspire - the hospice’s social group he made many friends and enjoyed some fun

Help to stop smoking - for good It is well known that giving up smoking is good for your physical health but new research suggests that, far from being a stressreliever, smoking increases the risk of anxiety and depression*. It’s hard to give up on your own but the free NHS stop smoking service which covers mid Essex has the knowledge and tools to help people living in this area to quit the smoking habit – for good. It is run by Provide, a social enterprise, and its Stop Smoking Team has helped loads of people to quit over the years It isn’t easy to quit, but we can help you every step of the way and you are far more likely to be successful with our help. Just give us a ring, we look forward to hearing from you. Call the Provide Stop Smoking Team for free on 0800 085 2113 (confidential) or email provide.healthimprovement@nhs.net Visit www.provide.org.uk/trying-to-quit which includes the top 12 excuses people give for not quitting.

The J’s Hospice recognised nationally The care and support of young people, aged 16-40, with life limiting conditions across Essex provided by The J’s Hospice has been recognised nationally as a model of good practice in a new publication, ‘Stepping Up’, from Together for Short Lives. The guide aims to ensure that all young people and their families have a positive experience of growing up and making a good transition from children to adult services. Bev Barclay, Director of Clinical Services at The J’s Hospice, is a member of the UK Together for Short Lives Transition Taskforce, which wrote the report and works to influence policy and share good practice and research relating to transition for young people with life-limiting conditions. Bev says;
this guide is here to assist in making transition smooth and manageable”. The guide will be followed in the summer by an accompanying resource guide to improve commissioning resources for transition for these young people; Stuart Hornsby, Chief Executive of The J’s says; “By using both these guides in tandem we hope to able to ensure that appropriate funding is provided by all local commissioners to ensure that our services are available to every young adult in Essex that needs our care and support now and in the future.”
Kelvedon
“We are proud that the work we do locally has been recognised as good practice and is being highlighted to others in the sector, especially as we have only been delivering services for under 5 years. We will be using the guide to highlight the on-going need of specialist care for young adults with complex needs to ensure transition from children to adult services is as smooth as possible. We are also proud that one of our patients was also chosen to write the foreword of the report.”

Volunteers Needed for the 2nd Chelm This year The J’s Hospice are organising the 2nd Chelmsford Marathon and WE NEED YOUR HELP! Following the outstanding success of last year’s inaugural Marathon, the 2015 event will take place on Sunday 18th October on the BRAND NEW and improved route. Runners will be setting off from the iconic Shire Hall and running directly down Chelmsford High Street, along the river toward Chelmer Village. Runners return to the city centre past the Essex Record Office and follow the river to Bell Meadow, Central Park and Admiral’s Park before heading out through Writtle College onto the country lanes surrounding the pretty villages of Roxwell and Willingale. The course will then loop back to the Finish Line in Central Park. In 2014, Chelmsford residents came out in their thousands to cheer and support the 1000+ participants running through the beautiful Essex
parklands and raising an amazing £100,000 for The J’s Hospice. Temi Fawehinmi, who ran her first marathon at last year’s event, commented “Thanks so much to the awesome Marshals. They remind me of the Olympic Games Makers... They really made the marathon amazing and for runners like me helped me from mile to mile!” This year you could be an integral part of this year’s very popular Chelmsford Marathon. The J’s Hospice are looking to recruit those all-important volunteers to fill several key roles and ensure that our event is a big success. An event of this scale takes a huge amount of people power and we have a variety of exciting roles to suit everybody. We need course marshals whose exciting and important role combines supporting and motivating participants and ensuring their safety. We also need a variety of Event Volunteers to take on a vast range of roles some of which are required in advance of the event and others that are right in the action of the start and finish lines. Before the day, we need volunteers to collect and deliver donations, help set up the event start and finish lines, and other exciting preparations where attention to detail is vital. On the day we need volunteers for crowd control, giving out goody bags and medals, event administration, baggage handlers, photographers and press enquiries. Each of these roles are integral to the success of the Chelmsford Marathon 2015. Dan Philpott, who ran in last the 2014 marathon, also puts on his own triathlons and acknowledges that events are only as good as the people who make it; “I have to say, your volunteers and marshals were out of this world... not only were they in abundance number wise but they all had smiles on their faces and offered great encouragement.“

Dragon Boats take on Chelmsford City Centre! The J’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival took place in Chelmsford City Centre on Sunday 26th July and despite the disappointing wet weather was hailed as a huge success by racers and spectators alike including We Hate Hills, Wind and Waves who managed to capsize their boat. Held on the River Chelmer at Backnang Square, teams of 10 paddlers, plus a drummer battled it out in ornate 30 foot Chinese Dragon Boats over a 200m course. Spectators came out to cheer their teams on and had great fun down by the river bank. With fierce competition on the river, 8 teams battled fought to see who the fastest and most accomplished rowers were. Some teams exchanged speed for style and arrived wearing the most eye-catching costumes; from Pirates in white and red stripey t-shirts to traditionally dressed red Indians. Surprising shoppers and entertaining spectators, the teams raced in timed heats for hours, with the final winners being the Executive Liner Boys who were a team of friends and family and won the final with an impressive time of 39.3 seconds followed closely by The P G Tips Men (Careful Movers) and architects; Ayshford Sansome. Joer Joseph, Crew Manager of the winning team who not only won a trophy, bottle of champagne and received medals; but were also given free tickets for November by Chelmsford City Racecourse. Chelmsford Mum turned Marathon Runner! This year Chelmsford runner, Jacqui Edwards, 39, completed the London marathon and raised an amazing £1,188.00 for local charity The J’s Hospice. As a member of the Springfield Striders, who have designed the route for this year’s Chelmsford Marathon, Jacqui is excited about the new route and shares her experience of last year’s event. “I offered to marshal the Chelmsford Marathon in 2014 because I knew my friend wanted to give something back to The J’s. They had cared for her husband and when I heard, from the Springfield Striders, that The J’s were looking for volunteers I mentioned it to my friend and said I’d do it with her. I’ve ran 4 marathons; 2 London, Brighton and Chester. The crowds at London definitely get you round, and also at Brighton really. Chester was a much smaller event, mainly on country lanes, so the support was much more subdued,
which does make it a bit harder. This could be the case on the new Chelmsford route so it’s important for residents in the local villages to come out and support the runners, it made a massive difference last year! Having seen how the runners were struggling with multi laps in 2014, I think that this year’s route will be better even though the crowds may be fewer. I’ve never been a runner but wanted to lose weight after having children. I joined the Springfield Striders through their ladies beginners course (which they run every year)

www.tec2.co.uk in 2006. After a break of a few years to have my second child I rejoined, again at the ladies beginners in 2009. The course takes runners up to 5k, after that I thought I’d do a 10k race which quickly turned into a half marathon in 2010. By then I’d got ‘the bug’ so decided to sign up for my first marathon, which I ran in 2011. My message to anyone thinking of running the Chelmsford Marathon is just do it!!! You’ll never regret it, the training is tough but the sense of achievement is immense. I remember a work colleague running the marathon years ago and me saying ‘I’d love to say I’ve run a marathon but I know I never could’ it was actually my husband that said to me ‘anyone can run a marathon’ so I did!” If you are interested in finding out more about the NEW route then visit www.chelmsfordmarathon.org.uk. This event will raise much-needed funds for The J’s Hospice and their young adult patients as well as creating a lasting legacy for the City of Chelmsford of a successful marathon that can grow year on year, bringing visitors to the city and highlighting all that the city has to offer. Greater Beaulieu Community Centre In the Springfield Pump circulated to you in May it was reported that a charitable trust was to be set up to deliver services at the new Beaulieu Neighbourhood Community Centre. The progress of setting up the charity is now well under way and submission of documentation to the Charity Commission is iminent. The chairty will be known as ‘The Beaulieu Community Trust’ (BCT) and will consist of 9 trustees. During July some of these trustees and members of the Parish Council made a site visit to view the plot of land where the community centre is to be constructed. It is difficult to imagine, when looking at the site, that a new community will soon be in existence in the space
that is seen presently. A good proportion of the houses within the first phase of the development have been sold and first occupation is scheduled to take place in September 2015. Construction of the community centre and shopping outlets are proposed in the next phase and will commence in the Autumn of this year. A lot of work lies ahead for the BCT to provide a community centre that meets the needs and aspirations of its new residents, but discussion is already underway to find ways to achieve this. A community information event to include the singing of Carols will be held on Friday 11th December, watch out for details about this on the parish councils website in the coming weeks. Community Centre site is located behind the green hoarding

A new programme launched in June 2015 which lets people to choose from a wider range of activities, including swimming, exercise classes, racquet sports and health walks. The personalised programme is offered at a discounted rate, with a range of activities such as swimming, which is a more affordable option for those wishing to improve their health and fitness. The health walks programme is completely free, and there are walks running daily across the mid Essex area. The scheme is open to anyone who would benefit from increasing their activity levels.
