Did you know? HISTORICAL FACT Springfield Workhouse Springfield had a workhouse in existence prior to 1769, standing behind Springfield Place on two acres of land. It was for the most indigent parish residents. It was later moved to a new site next to the Plough Inn (Harvester) in Springfield Road. Residents were given three meals a day and a “clean shift” every week. Work was varied but included wool carding, Hemp sorting and sack making. It was closed in 1836 when all the residents were transferred to Chelmsford. (Source:”Sleepers and Shadows Vol 2 1994) Research with grateful thanks to Mr D. Killick

The J’s Hospice celebrates its 5th anniversary in Hospice Care Week This week is national Hospice Care Week, which raises awareness of the work of hospices across the UK. This annual event is particularly significant to The J’s Hospice as it celebrates the 5th anniversary of its ground-breaking ‘hospice at home’ service for young adults across Essex.

own home - and it has received international recognition for this way of working.

The J’s Hospice provides enhanced care for young adults (aged 16-40) with life-limiting conditions such as cancer and a wide range of complex neurological and metabolic conditions. This includes tailored specialist nursing, respite and end of life care and bereavement support. The ‘J’s at Home’ service is the first of its kind in the country - supporting young adults and their families in the comfort and security of their

Bev Barclay, Director of Nursing at The J’s Hospice, has been working at the charity for over six years and is proud of what it has achieved: “Over the past five years, 182 patients have been referred to us. We started out with only 3 patients and now we are looking after 99 young adults across Essex. We have also offered support to 32 bereaved families over the last two years.”

The charity was set up in 2004 by Denise Whiffin whose son, Jonathan, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Denise realised there was a dire need for hospice and respite care when young adults outgrew children’s hospices and so, in October 2010, the J’s at Home service was launched.

As well as medical care, the charity offers ‘wellbeing’ services to help patients manage their conditions including massage, reflexology, counselling and family support. It also organises group activity days and runs the popular Inspire group where patients can get together and enjoy a range of activities. This unique approach to caring for young adults with life-limiting conditions has led to the inclusion of The J’s Hospice in a prestigious international report called ‘Hidden Lives, Hidden Patients’ which is being published by the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance in Hospice Care Week. The J’s Hospice is a charity that relies on volunteers and public support to continue its work: 70% of its funding comes from fundraising, donations and sponsorship. The next fundraising event is the Chelmsford Marathon on Sunday 18th October with headline sponsor Beaulieu, Chelmsford. The organisers are hoping that the runners will get themselves sponsored to raise money for the charity. Bev is delighted that The J’s Hospice has had such a positive impact on so many lives. She explained: “Hospice Care Week is focusing on the special role that hospices play in connecting people and that’s what we do at The J’s. One of our patients said that they had not talked to anyone outside of their family for five years before we started to work with them. We want to continue helping these young adults to live their lives to the full for the next five years and many more.” If you would like to support the J’s Hospice by volunteering at the Chelmsford Marathon, please visit www.chelmsfordmarathon.org.uk/ volunteer

Runners set the pace at city’s 2015 marathon with over £70,000 raised for J’s hospice On Sunday, 18th October, Chelmsford played host to the city’s second Marathon, with 800 people signed up to take part and raise funds for The J’s Hospice. Whilst the runners are now recovering and tending sore legs, their sponsorship keeps on coming, raising an amazing £70,000. All the money raised goes to The J’s Hospice, who organised the marathon, and provide hospice care, respite and support to young adults with life-limiting conditions and their families across Essex. The Chelmsford Marathon for The J’s Hospice was once again proudly sponsored by Beaulieu, the exciting new residential development by Essex based Countryside and L&Q in Chelmsford.

The race was started by Su Harrison of Heart FM’s Breakfast Show. The runners set off from Shire Hall and through the city to Chelmer Village before heading west into the picturesque Essex parkland, then on to the villages of Writtle, Roxwell and Willingale and back towards the city, finishing in Central Park. The weather played its part too, with fine and dry conditions so spectators could enjoy the family entertainment area at Central Park whilst the runners put in the hard miles.

Jessica Dellow, the Chelmsford Marathon Event Manager at The J’s Hospice, comments: “It was fantastic to see so many runners and spectators out in force this weekend, supporting each other and the J’s Hospice. Once again, it has been excellent to have the support of Beaulieu as our headline sponsor, who have championed The J’s and helped us raise many thousands of pounds this year. We must also thank Lancaster Toyota Chelmsford, the many local businesses and the army of volunteers who helped to make the Chelmsford Marathon something that we can all be proud of.”

First across the line was Crispian Bloomfield who finished in 2 hours and 37 minutes, followed by Michael Beaver and Andrew Low who finished together, recording the same time of 2 hours and 48 minutes. The ladies’ race was much closer. Last year’s winner, Nikki Brockbank, won again, finishing in 2 hours and 56 minutes. Emma Prideaux was just 18 seconds behind her, followed by Jackie Stretton (3 hours 9 minutes). Andrew Carrington, Managing Director of Strategic Land at Countryside said: “The work that The J’s Hospice does for its patients and their families is so important and Beaulieu’s sponsorship of the Chelmsford Marathon helps draw attention to this valuable organisation. L both the runners and organisers and without doubt it has been a great success. We’d like to thank everyone for making the day superb.” Jerome Geoghegan, Group Director at L&Q said: “Seeing the community come together at the Marathon to support such an admirable organisation such as The J’s is truly heart-warming. I’m delighted that Beaulieu is supporting them with their fundraising and look forward to continuing our relationship with The J’s.” Paul Bridges was presented with a special award on the main stage for completing his 100th marathon and hopes to have raised £1,800 for The J’s Hospice. Vincent Borgonjen from Haarlem in the Netherlands probably travelled the furthest to take part. He was impressed with the ‘beautiful course’, the organisation and the ‘nice, friendly people’. Launched this summer, Beaulieu is set to make a huge impact on Chelmsford, bringing new homes and community facilities, including schools, shops, health and enhanced transport connections to the area. Beaulieu will boast over 118 acres of green open spaces including new parks that will incorporate jogging and trim trails to encourage healthy lifestyles – perfect for those who like to keep fit and active, and those training for a marathon! The J’s Hospice provides enhanced care for young adults (aged 16-40) with life-limiting conditions such as cancer and a wide range of complex neurological and metabolic conditions. This includes tailored specialist nursing, respite and end of life care and bereavement support. This month, the charity celebrated the 5th anniversary of its ground-breaking ‘hospice at home’ service which supports young adults and their families across Essex in the comfort and security of their own home. Ten tips

to make your new year’s resolution a success

Most of us will make a new year’s resolution - maybe to lose weight, quit smoking or drink less - but only one in 10 of us will achieve our goal. Psychologists have found we’re more likely to succeed if we break our resolution into smaller goals that are specific, measurable and time-based. Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, tracked 5,000 people as they attempted to achieve their New Year’s resolutions.

on will power alone. “Many of these ideas are frequently recommended by self-help experts but our results suggest that they simply don’t work,” says Prof Wiseman. “If you are trying to lose weight, it’s not enough to stick a picture of a model on your fridge or fantasise about being slimmer.”

His team found that those who failed tended not to have a plan, which made their resolution soon feel like a mountain to climb.

He said the 10% of participants in the study who had achieved their target broke their goal into smaller goals and felt a sense of achievement when they achieved these.

Some focused too much on the downside of not achieveing their goal, adopted role models, fantasised about their goal or relied

“Many of the most successful techniques involve making a plan and helping yourself stick to it,” says Prof Wiseman.

goal-setting tips Prof Wiseman’s top 10 tips to achieving your new year’s resolution: 1 Make only one resolution. Your chances of success are greater when you channel energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour. 2 Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to think about your resolution and instead take some time out a few days before and reflect upon what you really want to achieve. 3 Avoid previous resolutions. Deciding to revisit a past resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment. 4 Don’t run with the crowd and go with the usual resolutions. Instead think about what you really want out of life. 5 Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and time-based. 6 Tell your friends and family about your goals. You’re more likely to get support and want to avoid failure. 7 Regularly remind yourself of the benefits associated with achieving your goals by creating a checklist of how life would be better once you obtain your aim.

Expect to revert to your old habits 10

from time to time. Treat any failure as a temporary setback rather than a reason to give up altogether.

Individual Savings Account (ISA)

A tax efficient way to save

Chancellor George Osborne sprung a welcome surprise on investors and savers in his Budget in March 2014, with the most far-reaching changes to the tax-free Individual Savings Accounts (ISA) since its launch in 1999. The ISA annual allowance was raised to £15,000 and the previous restrictions on cash holdings within the tax-free wrapper were lifted. The ISA allowance for the 2015/16 tax year is £15,240. The old limit on the amount of cash that could be deposited in an ISA each year – which in April 2014 was £5,940 – was scrapped, and the whole allowance now applies to both cash and stocks and shares holdings. Essentially, ISA savings can now be held in any combination of stocks and shares or cash that an individual wishes, offering choice and flexibility to build a portfolio and to reflect people’s differing, and changing, appetites for risk. Individuals are still only able to pay into a maximum of one Cash ISA and one Stocks & Shares ISA each tax year. The fundamental benefits of the ISA as a vehicle to create future wealth received a long-overdue boost from the changes. Rightly, the government believes the rise in the allowance and its decision to scrap the cash limits will make the system neater and less confusing. However, as Britain’s long-suffering savers are all too aware, cash deposits have offered dire returns over the five years that the Bank of England has held the base rate at 0.5%. Furthermore, the

present level of returns on the majority of cash savings is not sufficient to protect their value from inflation. However, the new flexibility to hold cash has effectively re-fitted the Stocks & Shares ISA into an even more versatile investment vehicle, providing individuals with a safer haven to ease concerns about short-term market volatility. Certainly, the previous restriction on the ability to shift money out of investments and into cash was a disincentive to lock into the potentially higher long-term returns offered by the stocks and shares element of ISAs. But savers who shied away from Stocks & Shares ISAs can now take advantage of exposure to stock market returns, and the potential to maximise the long-term benefits of the allowance by utilising all of the tax reliefs on offer, in the knowledge they have the freedom to transfer at any point. Remember that the favourable tax treatment given to ISAs is subject to changes in legislation and may not be maintained in future.
