The House on the Hill Toy Museum The House on the Hill Toy Museum is one of our country’s most popular visitor attractions. It contains the largest toy collection in the world with toys from the Victorian era right up to the 1990s. Over 80,000 individual items on display from trains, lead and tin toys, Meccano, Action Man and Sindy to Raleigh Choppers, teddy bears, annuals, games, dolls and dolls houses. If you liked Thunderbirds, Star Wars, Six Million Dollar Man, Barbie and Sindy then you’ll love our Toy Museum. It’s a gigantic Aladdin’s cave of nostalgia and we challenge you not to say “I used to have one of those! The museum is also home to our Showbiz Collection where you will see items such as the famous Only Fools and Horses three wheeled van and a large Dad’s Army display. Also some amazing film and TV artefacts
including props, costumes and life size figures from Star Wars. Don’t miss the Rock ‘n’ Roll exhibition celebrating the golden era of the 60s and 70s. See our original Wurlitzer jukebox, rare concert posters and a vast amount of guitars signed by the stars of the time. Marvel at the life-size figures of the Beatles, Elvis and even an animated Marilyn Monroe. The Toy Museum is full of surprises around every corner. You can enjoy playing on the “end of the pier” amusement slot machines with real old pennies and see the What the Butler Saw machines that shocked Edwardian England. View a fascinating display on the 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 World Wars including the Blitz years and Battle of Britain memorabilia and relics. A great hands-on and interactive experience. Entrance to Mountfitchet Castle is included in your ticket. Spookily located within the Toy Museum is The Haunted Manor, if you’re feeling brave enough to walk through the chilling chambers to the bewitched Victorian bedroom then a small extra entrance fee per person applies if you dare! Encounter our life sized dinosaurs on the way to the museum and try your hand at Fossil hunting in our Palaeontology House, can you find the Velociraptor’s claw?

Mountfitchet Castle Mountfitchet Castle is a unique time capsule. With its commanding position overlooking the Stort Valley, the Castle is situated on its original site which is steeped in history. Formerly an Iron Age hill fort, this historic site was also a Roman signals fort and later a Saxon and Viking settlement before being attacked in 1066 by William the Conqueror who built a wooden Motte and Bailey castle here. Mountfitchet Castle was also briefly used by the Royalist Army to King Charles in the English Civil War (17th C). The Royalist forces held out at the castle when they were laid Siege to by Cromwell. Soon after, the Motte and Bailey castle lay in ruins and the site was taken over by nature and became covered in dense scrub, trees, brambles and bushes and laid totally forgotten until 1975 when the owner, Alan Goldsmith, had a dream to rebuild and restore the castle to its former glory.
the Castle and roam through the Norman Village hidden behind the castle walls, wander in and out of the many houses and view the scenes, smell the log fires burning and experience the ambience of an ancient bygone lifestyle. A living history, hands-on and interactive experience. Come and mingle with the animals that roam freely throughout the castle grounds and listen out for the echoes of long-forgotten voices… Adjacent to the Castle and included in your entry ticket is the House on the Hill Toy Museum.
The grounds were cleared to reveal the original earthworks and mounds and after years of battling with planners, in 1980 the work began to reconstruct Mountfitchet Castle. After many years of work, the restoration of Mountfitchet Castle was complete and was opened to the public in 1985 and is unique as being the only wooden Motte and Bailey reconstruction on its original site anywhere in the world. This historic castle enables the visitor to travel back in time to 1066 Norman England. Explore

The League of Friends of Saffron Walden Community Hospital President: The Rt Hon Sir Alan Haselhurst MP Chairman: Dr Philip Sills, MB ChB The Saffron Walden Community Hospital League of Friends was formed in 1966, when the town had two hospitals and it is now part of a national organisation. Since the London Road Hospital closed, the League’s efforts have been directed solely to the Community Hospital in Radwinter Road and in its 49-year existence has raised over a quarter of a million pounds. This has been spent on a wide variety of equipment and projects, some costing just a few pounds, some many thousands of pounds. The League of Friends is comprised of members of all ages, from local organisations, from members of the local community and staff working at the hospital. Our aim is to provide funds for supplying equipment for the hospital and comforts for the patients and to supplement the services which the NHS is able to provide. In addition, we arrange extras for the patients, such as Cream Teas in the Summer and a Christmas present for each of the inpatients. Funds are raised by regular charitable events such as raffles, flag days and the all-important direct donations from the public.

We also have a Voluntary Shop at the hospital which is manned by a small but dedicated group of volunteers. As well as being a popular resource at our Community Hospital, the shop is invaluable to our fund-raising efforts and provides a regular source of income. We are always looking for new members to join the League, additional volunteers to help run the Hospital Shop and supporters to help with our fund-raising. If you are unable to give a little of your time, your membership is also valuable and it only costs £5 per annum. We’d also appreciate any donations to help with our fund-raising. If you would like to know more about the League of Friends, please contact one of the officers below. Thank you.

Mistletoe and magic L Debbie Houldsworth, Events Manager for
English Heritage in the London and East region, enthused: “One of our highlights of the year, Audley End House and Gardens offers the perfect backdrop for A Victorian Christmas. This year there will be even more magic and sparkle to give visitors a chance to see just how much the Victorians shaped the way in which we celebrate today.” More green fingered folk can try their hand at wreath making at our workshops on December 1 and 2. Using plants from Audley’s renowned gardens to create a Christmas masterpiece, bound to be the envy of visiting friends and relatives. Due to popular demand, two carol concerts will take place on Tuesday 8 December, with carols
sung by Christ’s College Cambridge choir, in the sumptuous surroundings of the Great Hall. There will also be a glass of wine or soft drink to prepare the vocal chords for a memorable night of singing! And new for 2015, you can also book in for Christmas dinner in the Servant’s Hall Tearoom before the concert. For the first time the gardens, stables and service wing at Audley End will be open between Sunday 27 and Thursday 31 December, so visitors can share their favourite English Heritage site with family and friends over the festive period. For more details on what’s on visit www.english-heritage.org.uk/audley or call 01799 522842.

Working out a repayment It’s crucial to work out the total cost of the credit you’re taking out, including interest payments, and not just the amount you’re borrowing or how much you can afford to pay every month. Taking the time to work out the full cost of any borrowing lets you plan your finances and ensure that you really can afford it.
What affects your borrowing costs How much you’ll pay to borrow money depends on how much you need and how quickly you plan to repay it. For example, if you want to borrow a small amount over a short period of time with a low interest rate, you may well pay very little interest (or none at all if you use a credit card charging 0% interest). On the other hand, borrowing a large amount of money over a long time will cost you more. In general, use the APR to compare products. The lower the APR the better, but also look at how much it will cost overall. This will usually be more for a longer-term loan even if the APR is less, and will show as the total amount payable. Find out more on deciding the best type of credit for you.
Borrowing options Let’s look at an example. John needs to borrow £1,000 to replace his old boiler. He gets a quote from a big energy company for the boiler and the installation, including paying back the cost over two years. However, when he reads the contract he notices that if he takes out their credit for two years he will pay more than £300 in interest.

plan for your borrowing John looks around at other options. As he has a good credit rating, he considers: • Taking out a credit card with an introductory interest-free period of 15 months on new purchases, or • Applying for a personal loan with an interest rate of 10% that he can pay back over two years
This is how much John may have to repay each month and overall: Option

In the end, John takes a look at his monthly budget and decides that he can afford to take out the credit card and pay the extra £10.76 each month to avoid having to pay any interest. It means he will have paid off the balance in 15 months and he won’t have been charged interest. John will only save money because he knows he can make the payments within the 15 months. If you don’t think you would be able to do that, a credit card could cost you more. What this table shows is the difference in repayment plans over different periods of time

and how being able to pay a little more each month may mean you’re able to take out a much cheaper form of credit. It also highlights the importance of shopping around for credit and not just taking the first product you are offered. Always spend some time shopping around for credit. Use comparison websites to look at different deals. Be aware of any extra charges or fees. All loans should tell you how much you will pay back overall, including any interest.

Keep warm this winter Follow these tips to keep you, your family and those around you warm and well in extremely cold weather.
To keep warm and well during spells of cold weather f Draw your curtains at dusk and keep your doors closed to block out draughts. f Have regular hot drinks and eat at least one hot meal a day if possible. Eating regularly helps keep energy levels up during winter. f Wear several light layers of warm clothes (rather than one chunky layer). f Keep as active in your home as possible. f Wrap up warm and wear shoes with a good grip if you need to go outside on cold days. f If you have reduced mobility, are 65 or over, or have a health condition such as heart or lung disease, you should heat your home to at least 18C. It’s a good idea to keep your bedroom at this temperature all night if you can and make sure you wear enough clothes to stay warm. During the day, you may prefer your living room to be slightly warmer f If you’re under 65 and healthy and active, you can safely have your house cooler than 18C, if you’re comfortable.
Protect your health in the cold Public Health England’s cold weather plan has tips on how to protect your health during cold weather. Make sure you are receiving any benefits you are entitled to, such as the Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment The Met Office has advice on getting ready for winter and some suggestions for practical things you can do to prepare for winter weather, including cold, ice and snow, high winds and flooding. The advice also tells you ways you can save money.
Look in on vulnerable neighbours and relatives Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to cold weather. Cold weather is especially dangerous for older people or people with serious illnesses, so check in on them if you can. 20

Saffron Walden Baptist Church Church Services on Sunday at 10:30am This is our main service at church. We have a lively worship band generally consisting of piano, guitar, drums and singer, with occasionally various other instruments. The band lead us in our sung worship: an eclectic mix of old hymns and new songs related to the theme for the service. Our minister, John, usually preaches and co-ordinates the service but participation is encouraged. A variety people lead the prayers and commnion and bring news and information about the overseas workers or charities that the church supports.
A church for all…
Children and young people leave the service after the all age talk to go to their Sunday Club activity. There are regular All Age Services, which are shorter and more family focussed. We have tea and coffee after the service, with plenty of time to chat to friends and new people. There is generally a service on Sunday evenings but this varies in time and format. Each month there is: • Songs of Praise with tea and cakes • Celtic Evening Prayer • Alternative Service – a time of reflection and quiet with participation from all. Followed by a light supper.
