A warm welcome to the summer edition of the Thanet Community Magazine. There’s so much to see and do throughout the summer months from festivals, shows and events. In this edition we’ve got articles on the Thom Thumb Theatre, Margate Cottage Hospital and the merger of the Marlowe and Ellington and Hereson schools. We also speak with Ruth Bailey from the Supporters of Manston Airport about the issues that have faced Manston Airport since its closure, along with lots more articles of interest. We would also like to hear from members of the Thanet community to see what issues are important to you. If you are a member of a local club or organisation and would like to have this listed please let us know. We would also like to hear from local charities and fundraisers as we always like to promote these within the publication. If you have any information that you would like to contribute, please email jon@community-publishing.org or post to Community Ad, 7 Cecil Square, Margate Kent CT9 1BD. You can also contact us on 01843 293062.

Thom Thumb Theatre The Tom Thumb Theatre is an arts venue in the heart of Cliftonville, Margate. Originally built as a coach house in Victorian times, the building was transformed into one of the smallest theatres in the world in 1984. The Tom Thumb is a striking mix of Japanese and Alpine Architecture, with a quirky, charming interior of velvet seats and flocked wallpaper. At the Tom Thumb we host spoken-word nights, comedy and story-telling. We screen indie films and promote live bands, solo performers and DJs. Through a program of residencies, we support and nurture cutting-edge theatre and experimental performance from across the country. We also have a ramshackle cocktail bar upstairs, with cocktails out of jam-jars. Recent highlights include “The Vagina Monologues” (directed by Jan Dunn and starring Nancy Del’Olio, Amy Lame, Pauline McLynn, Joanna Scanlon and Rita Tushingham), Scottee, Made In China, Polarbear and John Osbourne.

We also host companies developing new work, including Nigel Barrett (SHUNT associate artist) & Louise Mari (SHUNT founding member), GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN and .dash. Over the last couple of years we have nurtured and developed partnerships with peer organizations. For example with have staged events at Turner Contemporary and Pettmans furniture depository, as well as working with Ramsgate Arts to produce Looping The Loop (a bi-annual festival of performance with Battersea Arts Centre) and hosting events for Turner Contemporary, RESORT, UCA and Margate Jazz Festival. We have also built relationships with internationally recognized organizations, whose work we regularly host. These include Fuel, House, Battersea Arts Centre and Moshi Moshi (a record label, who co-produce a night with us once a month). This is alongside relationships built with local artists and organizations, to stage regular events that engage and empower the local community.

What people are saying… I have fallen in love with the Tom Thumb theatre. it is a tiny jewel with a fabulous atmosphere and brilliantly generous staff Pauline McLynn A gorgeous little chocolate box theatre Lyn Gardner Incredibly beautiful…a real labour of love Louise Mari (of Nigel & Louise and founding member of SHUNT) [The Tom Thumb] has become a place for a community, where everybody is heading to for the same thing – a love of art! It is one of the smallest theatres in the world, but it is big enough to be our home Samzine 4

Margate Cottage Hospital Margate Cottage Hospital started its life in 1876. Thanet Cottage and its garden were used as the site after many meetings on which local towns persons were agreed that Margate needed its own hospital for the reception and treatment of accidents and other cases of emergency. It was altered and enlarged over the years, the most notable being 1897 when the Queen Victoria Ward and the Treves Ward were added. Mr W Knight Treves was the first medical superintendent (His brother Frederick being the Doctor who attended Joseph Carey Merrick (1862-1890), Elephant Man). Many charitable events and subscriptions were made and by 1899 Mr William J Mercer, the hon architect and hon Secretary to the Hospital committee submitted new plans. The original cottage was the centre of the hospital and was entirely pulled down, leaving the added Lucas and Wilcox Wards and the operating room alone standing. On the vacant site and part of the front garden, a larger building was erected at a cost of £1,600. Compared to the old cottage with low pitched rooms and tight staircases, the new hospital was surprisingly spacious. It was reopened on 19th Jan 1899 by the Member of Parliament for Thanet, the Rt Hon James Lowther.

Lloyd’s Bank endowed a bed in the member of Charles Edward Troughton, who lost his life on the Surfboat disaster of 1897. He was chief cashier of the bank. In 1913 the King Edward memorial extension was built and a memorial tablet was unveiled 22nd July 1913 by Princess Alexandra of Teck. By 1926 a scheme for a new general hospital was started. By 1928 the site was chosen on St Peter’s Road. After four years of voluntary work by a large section of the community, a new hospital was opened on 3rd July 1930 by the Prince and Princess Arthur of Connaught .The cost of the new building and equipment being £70,000. In 1948 the hospital was taken over by the NHS. For some years the Cottage Hospital lay vacant and an Auction eventually held on 8th September 1930. Although, the freehold residences both in Victoria Road and Thanet Road were sold, the main building wasn’t. It was not until 1932 that the building was brought back to use, when Margate Corporation transferred the public library their form its old home in Hawley square,. In the 1960s when the library moved to its present site in Cecil Square, the Cottage Hospital site became a warehouse and distribution centre for a book publishing firm. In 1974 the premises became an Adult Education Centre for the mentally handicapped. Finally, in 1990 plans were made to convert the building into residential use, called Edith Court.

Broadstairs Folk Week 7-14 August 2015…the 50th anniversary year Based in the unspoilt seaside resort of Broadstairs, Kent, the festival takes place in a town blessed with seven sandy bays, lovely architecture, a host of friendly pubs and restaurants and an unbeatable atmosphere. All venues are within 10-15 minutes’ walk of each other, including the campsite, which is set within the level grounds of a school and has tip-top facilities including indoor and outdoor showers and loos; on-site catering; late night events, Panic Circus and an intimate theatre that hosts concerts. Folk Week completely takes over the town for a whole week. You know a festival is happening! The Concert Marquee in the beautiful setting of Pierremont Park is where you can see the best of folk, blues, roots and world music, every afternoon and evening throughout the week. There’s a Real Ale and Food bar too. Artists appearing this year include Kate Rusby, the Spooky Men’s Chorale, Edward II, the Demon Barbers XL, Philip Henry and Hannah Martin,

Flook, Mawkin, Dan Walsh, Jez Lowe, Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar, Belshazzar’s Feast, the Simon Care Trio, Artisan, Ben Paley and Tab Hunter, Steamchicken, the elusive Black Dog ceilidh band, Vin Garbett, the Broonzies, Tom McConville, The Cock and Bull Band, the Gerry Colvin Band, Robb Johnson, the New Rope String Band and the Long Hill Ramblers and our local boy made very good – Tim Edey and a host more that there isn’t room to mention. Our main dance venue is the fabulous Pavilion on the Sands, overlooking the lovely Viking Bay. Here you can enjoy traditional ceilidhs through to late night bops that could be reggae, skiffle, folk-rock, Cajun – anything that’s great to dance to, in fact. Social dancers have their own venue at the campsite indoors with some great callers and bands throughout the week. There’s every conceivable type of Morris dancing throughout the town, kicking off with a Big Parade on Saturday 8th August.

Folk Week is the time to pander to that longheld desire to play the banjo/melodeon/tin whistle and just go for it at one of our friendly workshops in music, song or dance. In 2015, you can join the Shanty Choir, the Spoon orchestra, the Big Uke band; learn Ragtime guitar, electric fiddle, Irish session tunes, tenor banjo – or in this 50th anniversary year – celebrate the origins of Folk Week as a dance festival and try ceilidh, Cajun, zydeco, belly dance, hip hop, break dance, solo jig or plain old Cotswold morris. Shooting Roots music, song, dance and craft sessions entice 12 – 25 year olds to do their own thing at the campsite and the Creative Tent caters for the under 8s. There’s lots of free entertainment on offer; the Hobby Horse shows at the bandstand entertain everyone from 0 – 90 every morning and features our very own Clarence the Dragon and Hooden Horses. Other children’s events include story-telling, magic shows, circus skills and Cap’nJago’s Pirate Show.

The Lord Whisky Sanctuary Fund The Lord Whisky Sanctuary Fund (registered charity 283483) was established in 1981 to support the work of The Park House Animal Sanctuary. We offer a safe haven to any animal in need and no animal accepted into the sanctuary is ever put to sleep. The charity gets its’ unusual name from Whisky, a Jack Russell who came to the sanctuary at the age of 4, having had six previous homes. He lived with founder, Margaret Todd and her family until he was 22. His personality led Margaret to believe that a sanctuary was needed to care for animals just like him and the charity was established to ensure its’ work could continue for years to come. Since then, the charity has cared for hundreds of animals including horses, donkeys, pigs, goats, dogs and cats as well as smaller animals and we have on average 200 animals in residence. Expediency is never a concern and each animal is welcome to

stay in our care for as long as it takes to find that special home and loving family. All potential new owners are vetted to ensure that they can provide the right environment and care and we successfully re-home around 400 animals per year. Any animals that cannot be re-homed due to old age or illness become part of our family and remain at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives. We always try and return wild animals to their natural environment. Animals needing homes can be found on our website or Facebook page, but include Brownie, a nice natured, happy Staffie, Rocky, who came from Italy and cats Florence and Brucie.

Low income veterinary clinics We offer low-cost veterinary treatment to people in receipt of benefits and low-cost neutering for both cats and dogs. For more information about our clinics and the services we provide, visit our website (address below). The sanctuary receives no government funding and relies entirely on legacies, donations and fundraising. We have a band of dedicated fundraisers who organise a number of events around the county and work tirelessly to raise vital funds for the sanctuary and we are always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to help. Without the help of our fundraisers and the Friends of the Sanctuary, our work simply could not continue.

Ramsgate Skatepark Ramsgate Skatepark Project is an independent voluntary group aiming to enhance the newly built Skatepark provided by Thanet District Council at Warre Recreation Ground, Ramsgate. In order to make the new park challenging, comprehensive and diverse additional ramps and obstacles are essential. We want to ensure that Ramsgate has a high quality Skatepark that will enable our young people to engage in challenging physical activity; wheeled sports are particularly appealing to those who may not typically engage in the usual team sports and therefore targets many young people who may not otherwise exercise for fun. Studies have shown that a well equipped Skatepark benefits the whole community – petty crime rates drop significantly as the youths have a meaningful activity to occupy them. Ramsgate is one of the most deprived areas in the country and lacks facilities and funding to improve the opportunities for local young people.

16

Please mention

We are cultivating a positive atmosphere of skill-sharing and the variety of obstacles what we hope to provide will ensure that the park is accessible to beginners, yet remains an challenge for advanced skaters, roller bladers, scooter riders and BMXers. The Skatepark will be concrete, therefore durable and will require little or no maintenance. The facility will be free to use, so again is accessible to all, and will benefit the young people of today and future generations. The local wheeled community has already worked hard raising funds by running a boot fair stall, organising music events and skate jams and other small events/fund raising opportunities: but larger donations, and monetary awards are desperately needed to maximise the fund and make their dreams come true. We hope you think we are worthy of your investment.

Credit Unions for all walks of life I’m going to bet that you’re only vaguely aware of the Credit Union movement in the UK; bet you have very little idea of the sorts of savings, loans or current account products your local Credit Union offers; but I’d go so far as to bet that you casually assume they’re not applicable to you. Am I right? But here’s the thing: not only are Credit Unions available to everyone, from all walks of life, they are dependent on savers and borrowers just like you, from all walks of life. I’m betting again, that Credit Unions will be associated in your mind with lending to people on low incomes, and this time you’re right, and that’s what’s special about them…they’re willing to lend to those in our communities who have a troubled credit history, or a patchwork of income from benefits and tax credits, or who for whatever reason other lenders won’t touch. But to provide their safe, ethical and responsible lending services to those who might otherwise resort to extortionate payday lenders, the Credit Unions need to be financially sustainable which means they need a steady income of their own, from the interest they charge on loans to…yup, everyone from all walks of life. They want and need to lend to the better-off sections of our communities, those who could take a loan from any supermarket, online or high-street lender they like. To put it simply, Credit Unions need good borrowers to support their business of supporting otherwise financially excluded borrowers. Their business needs to balance out the poor credit risk customers with some better credit risk ones. paying shareholder returns or bankers’ bonuses they are run on a low cost base and can charge interest rates comparable, and often lower, than commercial lenders. So not only do they want you and need you, people from all walks of life, they can also reward you with loans at competitive rates. When you also realise they don’t charge upfront fees or have any hidden costs or early repayment fees, why wouldn’t you consider them next time you want to treat yourself to a new kitchen, car or holiday? I’ll also go right out on a limb and bet that a good number of you, when you stop to think about it, would be pleased to take a loan from an organisation set up to serve your local community. I hope I’m right because everyone needs access to fair money…although I’d never bet with it.

Thanet Community Support Partnership Thanet Community Support Partnership – who are we? We are a project based at Thanet Volunteer Bureau and are co-ordinated by Louise Collins and Frances Lane (Lou & Fran). One of the main aims of Thanet Community Support Partnership is to combat loneliness and isolation in older people. The Partnership acts as the central point of contact for a group of organisations who each provide a service to help older people to remain independent in their own homes for longer. The Partnership was initially set up in 2009 as a preventative measure and was funded by the NHS. When funding ran out Louise applied for Big Lottery funding and received 5 years’ funding in 2001. We will need to look at other ways of obtaining funding at the end of 2016.

Why do people need Thanet Community Support Partnership? As we get older we often find life can become more difficult in many ways. We all need a little help from time to time. Lots of older people lose their partners and their friends, perhaps their family moves away and ageing means they become less mobile. This can lead to them becoming socially isolated and inevitably lonely. This is when a friendly face can make all the difference. All kinds of help is available for older people, including befriending, assisted shopping, handyman service, help with form filling, support at home after coming out of hospital, information and guidance, wheelchair and commode loan, advocacy, trips out and more. We are always looking for volunteers to help an older person. We find our volunteers get as much out of it as the people they help. 20

Please mention

What else do we do? We also have an online directory of over 600 services available for older people. This includes health contacts, all kinds of help and support, groups and clubs and more. Visit www.thanetsupport.co.uk if you are looking for any kind of help for an older person in Thanet. We also run a weekly social activity afternoon on Wednesdays in Ramsgate (“Your Time”) where older people can socialise over tea and cake and enjoy a range of activities. Recent examples include a tea dance, singing, quizzes, raffles, chair-based exercise, flower arranging and guest speakers. There are also regular live musical and dance performances to enjoy. Many people are looking for somewhere to go out and meet others. Around 40 people come each week. Door to door transport can be arranged (at £5.50 per round trip). We charge £2 entrance fee. As a further way of reaching communities, the Partnership also co-ordinates a monthly Networking Lunch for local organisations to come along and share contacts, news and ideas. It’s all free and is open to organisations from all sectors. We are always happy for newcomers to pop along. It’s always on the 4th Monday of each month at St Austin & St Gregory’s church hall in Margate, 12.30-1.30pm. Tea/coffee and biscuits supplied. It’s a great way of breaking the ice informally and a good platform for sharing information.

Tourism thriving in Thanet The tourism industry in Thanet continues to thrive according to figures recently obtained from sector-specific analysis. The most recent tourism research commissioned by Visit Kent shows the total economic impact of tourism in Thanet was £245 million in 2013 showing an increase of 6.5% on 2011. The total number of visitors rose to almost 3.36 million, up by 7.3%, compared to 2011, while the total number of actual jobs rose by 8.3% to 5,932. The figures, obtained using the Cambridge Economic Impact Model, reveal that in 2013, Kent entertained 58 million visitors and the tourism industry’s value remained strong at £3.4billion. Director of Community Services Larissa Reed said, “These new figures really demonstrate the impact tourism has on the Thanet economy. What’s even more fantastic is that additional data collected locally in 2013 regarding the economic impact of language schools in Thanet takes the overall value of tourism up to £286 million. “These figures back up that Thanet’s tourism industry is flourishing and with the first full year of Thanet’s Destination Management Plan successfully implemented businesses have never been more supported. Tools developed as part of the plan allow local businesses to access a free marketing toolkit with PR tips and free workshops on things like social media and photography to enhance their business. “New investment is also being attracted to the area and Dreamland, which is set to be a major UK attraction when it opens this summer, is hoped to bring more of the same and support the continued boost in visitor numbers!”

Across the county, visitor numbers in Kent continue to rise compared to the previous year and the county bucks the national trend for day trips, seeing a 2% rise compared to a national average drop of 8%. Jobs rose by 4% to 67,931 which accounts for 11% of total employment. The county was the 8th most visited in the country (excluding London) for domestic overnight trips and Kent was also the third most visit visited destination outside of London for foreign visitors, with overseas staying trips up by 7%. In the last ten years, Kent’s tourism industry’s economic impact has risen by 42% and jobs have gone up 30% in the same period. Chief executive of Visit Kent Sandra MatthewsMarsh said: “The overall rise in visitor numbers and jobs, and the strong value of tourism itself across the county is, once again, fantastic news. We continue to maintain a healthy stream of visitors supporting our economy, and the overseas staying visitor numbers are particularly encouraging. “The fact that we are the third most visited destination outside of London for overseas staying visitors is great news – though we obviously want to be number one! “Visit Kent is pleased to remain one of the UK’s most popular destinations. With so many exciting projects ahead, such as the opening of Dreamland Margate, our Magna Carta celebrations, new hotels, exciting changes at the Historic Dockyards Chatham and the planned Paramount Park, Kent is in an enviable position for the future.”

5 minutes with...

Royal Harbour Academy In this edition of 5 minutes with…we spoke to Headteacher Simon Pullen and Deputy Headteacher Colin Harris from The Ellington and Hereson Schools, as well as staff from the Marlowe. We asked them about the forthcoming integration of the Marlowe Academy and The Ellington and Hereson schools. Why is it necessary to merge the two schools? The Marlowe Academy has a capacity of 1200 pupils but they only have half of that intake with just over 600; this makes the school financially unviable. Closure would have been a serious option which would have meant that the 600 students that attend The Marlowe Academy would need to be distributed around other schools in Thanet, a lot of which are near capacity already. On top of this there would have been staffing redundancies and the closure of the school and its facilities would have been a real loss to the community. For ourselves at The Ellington and Hereson we also have a financial vulnerability, which is that we’ve got a tight budget to work to. We can’t expand our numbers and our costs keep increasing. The only option we would have to make our budget balance would be to increase class sizes or reduce the curriculum. The integration of the two schools would

What will be the total capacity be of The Royal Harbour Academy? Overall the school can hold up to 1800 pupils across the two sites but our current projections are for 1200 students split across the two sites. We’ll have 600 on the Key Stage 3 site which will allow us to retain our small school feeling and approach that we know works so well with our students. We will phase the integration in the first year so that students in the exam taking years of Year 11 and Year 13 will stay on their respective sites and benefit from the continuity of having the same site and the same teachers.

give The Ellington and Hereson an option to broaden its curriculum, but we would still get to retain that small school feel by being split over two sites. We’d like to think of it as a creation of a new school under the name ‘The Royal Harbour Academy’ which brings a new opportunity to Ramsgate.

The initial proposal was to call the school the Augustus Pugin Academy but following feedback it was clear that it was not a popular name with our students and parents. We went back to the schools’ students and asked them to come up with a shortlist of six new names. All the students then took part in a ballot to decide the new school name. The Royal Harbour Academy was the most popular choice and reflects the fact that Ramsgate harbour is the only royal harbour in the country. The new school will come under the Coastal Academies Trust, what is this and how will it benefit the school? The Coastal Academy Trust (CAT) is a group of local schools who have formed themselves into an academy chain to share expertise and good practice. The CAT iscurrently made up of Dane Court Grammar School, King Ethelberts School, Hartsdown Technology College and Cliftonville Primary School. Ellington and Hereson were already due to academise and join the trust and have been benefiting from the support from the other CAT schools for the past two years. For example EHS Sixth Form students have been supported by Dane Court Grammar School. Please mention

The Kent Disability League The Kent Disability League began in the 2005/2006 season to create opportunities for footballers with varying impairments and levels of ability to compete in the same environment, providing regular competitive and fun football playing opportunities for children and adults. Prior to this there were only a handful of disability teams across the county who played friendly games of in one off regional competitions. The KD League soon established itself and grew at a phenomenal rate, partly in response to the demand for more localised competition. Seven years on, there are now over 50 small sided teams regularly taking part in the Kent DL with over 300 adult and almost 200 junior, male and female, players taking part, making it the largest county disability league in the country. The clubs which compete in the Kent DL play pan-disability football, where teams consist of players with varied physical disabilities, which can include cerebral palsy, visual Impairments, deaf, Down’s syndrome and amputees, alongside players with various learning disabilities. All the divisions encourage mixed participation, male and female, where the Kent DL became the first to run mixed adult disability football. Clubs competing include Gillingham, Charlton Athletic, Canterbury City, Bromley Green Valiants, Sheppey United, Maidstone United, Folkestone United, Thanet Galaxy, Deal All Stars, Milton & Fulston Spiders, Swanscombe Tigers, RMB United, Anchorian Equals and BCD. The Kent DL

was originally run and administered by the Kent FA; however, all Kent DL operations are now the responsibility of the new league committee (volunteers), which include representatives from various clubs within the Kent DL. Towards the end of the 2014-2015 season the Kent Disability League was selected as the South East Region FA & McDonalds Charter Standard League of The Year 2015. Unlike other county football leagues and divisions, where clubs compete in home and away fixtures, due to the distances between the Kent DL clubs, fixtures are played as monthly tournaments throughout the football season at one venue for adult teams and another venue for juniors. Fixtures are played in a round-robin short match format, with varied divisions from under 11s through to under 13s, under 16s and up to adults. Although the Kent DL is affiliated to the Kent County FA, it is now the responsibility of the committee to run disability league football throughout Kent, ensuring the league has long term sustainability, which also requires the league to become self-funded. To continue with these ongoing disability football competitions the Kent DL is in need of funding and support to assist in ensuring the league can continue to offer football tournaments, matches and activities for competing clubs and players, from supplying equipment, specialist footballs, training kit and facilities hire, to sponsorship of the Kent DL.

A If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or making donations for equipment to the KD League, please contact fundraiser David Ramzan by email to fundraising@kentdl.co.uk or call 07860 713619

Margate Museum The museum was first opened on its current site in 1986 by Thanet District Council with the help of The Manpower Services Commission. In 2010 after 2 years closure the then Mayor Cllr Mick Tomlinson asked a group of interested volunteers to re-open the museum to the public. The Friends of Margate Museum was formed and the museum opened to the public again. Each year in the summer a major exhibition is mounted around the history of Margate. 2014 was the 50th Anniversary of the Whitsun mods and Rockers disturbances of 1964. The museum tells the story, but the building itself is a story on its own, the site in the Old Town Market Place was originally a 16th Century Flemish building which was the undercover Market. In 1857 Margate became a Borough and a Council was formed and the upper gallery became the Council Chambers at night, during

Manston Airport Back in March we took some time to speak with Ruth Bailey about the issues surrounding Manston Airport. Ruth is an avid, leading campaigner with the ‘Supporters of Manston Airport Group’. Ruth also stood for MP in South Thanet for the ‘Manston Airport Independent Party’ and came a respectable 7th out of 11 candidates. In the following interview Ruth outlines the issues that have faced Manston over the last year since its closure as an airport. You would like to see Manston up and running as an Airport again. How would this be achieved? Yes I certainly would, as would the majority of the people in Thanet and East Kent. Under proposed plans Manston would work initially as a freight hub. It has always been well regarded by freight companies because of the quick turnaround. Planes would fly in,unload and be flying out again within 90 minutes, serviced by the excellent ground crew and storage facilities. The company that is looking to buy Manston, River Oak, want to marginally increase

the amount of freight. Another lucrative arm of their business plan is the maintenance and repair of aircraft and the recycling of redundant planes. Previously the airport had a licence to break two planes a year, River Oak are looking to substantially increase this number as there are currently thousands of planes coming to the end of their life worldwide. This tear down and recycling will be done in newly built hangers and not in the open. This will create opportunities for engineering apprenticeships and specialized jobs in Thanet. Later, once financially stable, passenger flights

would be re-introduced. River Oak use private investment and not public funds and grants and they do not require night flights despite scaremongering to the contrary. Bristows Sea Air Rescue service (SARs) would also like to be based at Manston to ensure total coverage of the UK. They would bring with them in excess of £7million set up costs plus ongoing expenditure. They have had to go to Lydd temporarily but would re- locate to Manston if, and when, re-opened.

River Oak are an American, triple A-rated, investment company turning over billions of pounds. They have a reputation for identifying under-utilised assets & breathing new life into them on behalf of their investors. Tony Freudmann is the UK representative, he was also the CEO when the airport was under the Wiggins group and so has experience at Manston. River Oak made several offers to Ann Gloag before the airport closed on May 15th 2014 including the full asking price of £7 million. These offers were all rejected out of hand. River Oak have invested a lot of money employing the highest legal brains in the UK to advise them on the viability of a CPO. They have been tenacious, committed and very patient over the last year. More information about their plans can be found on their website http:// www.riveroakinvestments.co.uk/our-plan-formanston/

How does it stand with Manston at the moment as regards it still being used as an Airport? Although closed the airport is still designated as an airport within the local plan and the Transport Minister has confirmed this. The Government recognise the valuable role Manston Airport has to play and have used it as a case study in a Select Committee report into the Role of Smaller Airports. Manston Airport (continued) Manston as an airport were raised. See footage here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsWCmjgDXUvid Cameron down The Conservatives, returned on 7th May, from David Cameron down to local MPs Roger Gale and Craig MacKinlay, have all publicly backed Manston Airport. The new UKIP led Thanet District Council under Chris Wells also backs the airport. The Government commissioned Price Water House Cooper Report has been completed and, at this present time, is being finalised before publication at the end of June.

The Government have just announced that no decision will be made on an additional new runway until at least December. Manston could be an answer to the shortage in the South East, at least in the short term. It will never be a major passenger hub but if Manston could take some of the cargo freight from London Heathrow and Gatwick it would free those airports up for more passengers. Manston Airport has one of the longest and widest runways in the UK and could be vital for emergency aircraft landings. It seems crazy to have this facility and not to use it when there is such a shortage of runway space in the South East. It is an airfield that has operated here for 99 years so there is the heritage aspect to consider as well as the potential for providing future jobs and apprenticeships. Once run properly with investment, vision and good marketing it could be a hugely successful airport unlike the past few years. Do we have the infrastructure to support an Airport at Manston? The infrastructure is practically all in place now. We have new ‘A’ roads leading to the M2 via the A299 connecting the Airport to London and beyond. Soon Parkway station, which was planned with Manston Airport in mind, this will be constructed and the HS1 will then reach London in under an hour. Manston is the closest airport to Europe and the skies above are uncongested. Once Paramount Park opens in 2020 Manston Airport will be ideally placed to serve the new theme park being only 45 minutes away. Manston Airport is part of the heritage of Thanet and is could be a significant part of the future.

Paramount Park is the proposed theme park which will be based in Swanscombe Kent.
