5 minutes with...

The new owner of The Little Albion

Marcus Hogg New owner of The Little Albion in St Peters: “I want this to be a Traditional British Pub”

In this edition of 5 Minutes With we talk to Marcus Hogg, new owner of the Little Albion about what traditional pub values he’s brought with him to the pub. What is your background in the pub Trade? I was brought up in the pub trade, my mum and dad owned a pub in Bethnal Green, East London when I was about 8 years old. We then moved to a pub in Stratford, where we stayed for about 6 years and then we then moved down to Birchington Kent where we had the Powell Arms for about 7 years, so I’ve grown up around the pub trade and can remember the sense of community and tradition in these places and I want to bring that to the Little Albion in St Peters. Are you going to have local pub teams? Yes we are we want this to be a Traditional British Pub, somewhere the locals can come in for a chat and a pint that’s something you don’t get in a lot of the big chain pubs. We’ve just signed a netball team and will be looking at both darts and pool teams. We will be having live music in the pub, I think it gives a great atmosphere. Will you be serving food? We will be and we want our food to be good quality but still affordable. We have Tuesday as our 6

Please mention

Curry night, where you can get a meal for £7.95 with a ½ pint lager or small wine, Thursday is our steak and burger night where you can get a steak for £11.95 or a Burger for £7.95, we have pie and mash on a Saturday and this is with liquor, we get this sent down from London and this is £7.95 for 2 pie and mash or £4.95 for 1 pie and mash, and we have a roast on a Sunday which is 1 course for £9.95, 2 courses for £11.95 or 3 courses for £14.95. What’s your vision for the Albion Pub I’d like this to be a traditional British pub with good food, great pub teams, live music and have a really friendly atmosphere. We’re in a brilliant area and St Peters still has a great sense of community spirit. Everybody is welcome in the pub and we want people to have a great time and enjoy this traditional pub setting. We have the facilities in the pub to cater for functions so if people would like their wedding reception, engagements or parties to be held here that’s great. We want people to come to the pub and relax in a friendly atmosphere. We’ve got friendly bar staff and a great group of people who are already coming to the pub, we want to extend this out to the St Peters community and welcome new customers to the Little Albion, for drinks and great food. Minnis Bay A long stretch of sand coupled with ample free parking and children’s outdoor play area near by make Minnis Bay the perfect beach for an afternoon in the sun. For the adventurous there is plenty of space for water sports, such as windsurfing or kite boarding and there is a sailing club close by. The paddling pool is the perfect location to hunt for crustaceans and there is also an excellent restaurant with a bar, and a kiosk on the prom.

Drivers using mobile phones Research shows one in three drivers in Kent uses their mobile whilst driving Research by Kent County Council has found 65% of people fear the biggest risk to them on the roads is drivers using mobile phones whilst at the wheel. The research, by KCC’s Road Safety Team, shows that motorists estimate 39% of drivers use a handheld mobile phone, 34% use a phone to text/ use apps/check email/use internet and 49% use a hands-free mobile device whilst driving. This April, Kent County Council is launching an awareness campaign to remind drivers of the dangers of using mobile phones whilst driving. It aims to remind drivers that mobile phones cause a huge distraction whilst driving and that it is a myth to think that it is possible to concentrate fully on two things at once. The reality is that no two activities can be given equal attention - one task will always be more dominant. With a task as important as driving, even just a slip in concentration due to a mobile phone could lead to severe consequences. Vicky Watkins, Road Safety Team Leader at KCC, said, “Using a mobile phone whilst driving impairs reaction time, reduces concentration levels, leads to poorer judgment of speed and distance and reduces your field of vision.

“It’s not simply splitting your attention 50:50, it’s more like 95:5 with the task seeming the most important taking over – with drivers using a phone that means the call or text completely takes over from the driving.” A video will highlight key every day moments where it would be perceived as ludicrous to answer a mobile phone and in doing so, emphasise that driving is another one of these moments. The campaign will be running throughout April and will be on television and on-demand services, Heart Radio, bus rears, bus stop posters and social media. Inspector Martin Stevens from Kent Police said, “Though the majority of people know it is wrong to phone or text at the wheel, some feel that using apps is acceptable. “Doing this is just as distracting as calling or texting someone and just as likely to cause a collision. Furthermore should a motorist cause a collision or be caught on their phone, we can forensically examine it and find out exactly what the user was doing with their handset.

“Using a phone at the wheel is just as socially unacceptable as drink driving and both offences cost lives. Life lost on the road is a life wasted and a family devastated. “So next time you are behind the wheel and get a mention, a favourite, a like or a direct message, ask yourself if you are literally dying to read it?” Drivers are also being told not to be fooled into thinking hands-free calls are not illegal or ‘safe’. Hands-free phone conversations impair drivers to a similar degree as hand-held calls. KCC’s research gives strong backing to the continuing need to raise drivers’ awareness of the increased risk they place themselves in when using a mobile phone at the wheel and to remind them that Kent Police are actively looking for them. Matthew Balfour, Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, added: “We want to help road users to make Kent’s roads safer and to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in the county. “With this campaign the message is clear, make the right call - don’t use your phone and drive. “We’ve found that a large number of drivers say they know using a mobile at the wheel is dangerous and unacceptable, yet many continue to do so. This campaign brings together the education message with an increased likelihood of being caught - key motivators to changing this behaviour.”

Beach Within Reach Being able to access the beautiful beaches around Thanet is something that most of us take for granted. However, for those people, young and old, with a mobility impairment this can prove to be extremely difficult. Beach within Reach is a small local charity that provides All-Terrain Wheelchairs for use on seven of Thanet’s beaches. The chairs are available to loan, free of charge, during the summer season from the Your Leisure Bay Inspector, don’t forget some ID. Outside of this time please call the Charity to discuss your needs. The wheelchair’s have large inflatable tyres which make crossing the sand easier than in a regular wheelchair and the frame is made from marine grade steel which means they can also go in shallow water.

The Charity was registered in 2007, run entirely by volunteers and has helped many people spend quality family time on the beach together since then. Over the next 18 months all of the wheelchairs will need to be replaced and we are going to be totally reliant on the generosity of the general public, local businesses and organisations to help us raise the £30,000+ that we will need to be able to continue to offer this service. If you could help us in any way, either by making a donation, fundraising for us or becoming a volunteer, please call 07432 647275 or email beachwithinreach@sky.com. You can also send us messages via our social media pages: Facebook Beach within Reach and Twitter - @beachinreach. Our website is www.beachwithinreach.org.uk Registered charity number 1119672.

2016: the year of the Big Shed Our very own Broadstairs Town Shed opened in May 2014. We’re very proud to have been the first in Kent, and we are a project from and supported by the Broadstairs Town Team. The ‘Men’s Shed’ concept started in Australia in 1999. Conceived as a place where older chaps can meet, make, mend, share skills and learn new ones over a cuppa, and where Health and Wellbeing messages and support can be accessed, they have now evolved into a world-wide grass roots movement for meeting, making, fixing, talking and working shoulder to shoulder. Loneliness and isolation are issues that affect so many people, but statistically older men are particularly susceptible to the effects they can have on life, happiness and good health once retired, or when faced with a change in life circumstances. So that’s where Sheds have come to the fore – and there are now over 1000 in Australia, 226 currently open in the UK, with 2 more opening each week and 89 more planned for 2016. With the help of start up funding from The Big Lottery, and unbelievable support from local businesses, we converted the unloved old DVLA building next to Pierremont Hall in Pierremont Park. We have a small (but thanks to the efforts of all our Shedders and Shed Heads), perfectly formed workshop and meeting space, where woodworking, computer classes and much more happen 3 days a week.

We have over 90 members now, both men and women, and great new friendships and working partnerships have formed. We have fantastic testimonies and feedback from members about the real difference the Shed has made to their lives, and we’ve even got a Shed wedding coming up this year! But…within weeks of opening, we knew that the overwhelming positive response from potential new members meant we needed more space. So the hunt was on for a larger premises during 2015. It had to be easily accessible, with room to offer space to new members, have more kit, expand the activities into other areas (for example evening woodworking classes for all), to be able to open for more days, plus develop lots of ideas to work on more projects for the community. After a long and eventful search we found an additional building to do just that. We are incredibly excited, as (what some of you may know as The old Tram Shed) just off Northdown Road (and on The Loop!) will be the site for our new Project ‘The Big Shed’. With almost 5000 sq. ft of space, and in need of quite major renovation, and specialist kitting out as wood working workshops, a metalworking space, meeting rooms and other craft areas, it’s an enormous task. Our plan is to open the new Big Shed in late Spring 2016. We do love a challenge, and we’re lucky enough to have a fabulous resource of retired carpenters, general builders, boat builders, surveyors,

engineers etc, at our disposal, and they will be carrying out the majority of the work. We have offers of materials already to help from local businesses too, which is wonderful. However, the most important thing for us is not just that the project can continue to grow to keep up with demand, diversify into projects such as cooking and metalwork, but that it is sustainable. That is our challenge for the coming year! We’ve received funding from The Henry Smith Charity and The Robert McAlpine Foundation which have really kickstarted the renovation but the building needs a new roof and to make it truly accessible, a lift needs to be installed. If you’d like to support the Shed financially then please go to www.broadstairstownshed.org.uk for information about our Friends of the Shed scheme and also our CrowdFunder appeal for the lift. We’re also organising a few fundraising events throughout the year, so please help if you can! It will mean such a lot to all our existing members and those about to join. So here’s to 2016 - the Year of The Big Shed: with your help it can happen and help and support even more people in our community. Do get in touch if you’d like to get involved: The Shed, Pierremont Park, Broadstairs. Open Tues 11am - 4pm, Weds 10am - 4pm and Thursdays at the moment by appointment. Ramsgate Croquet Club The first day of the 2016 playing season took place on Saturday 23 April when members gathered for President’s Day, which featured a golf croquet tournament in which four players competed head to head in the individual games. Sunday 5 June sees the return of the increasingly popular and well-attended Public Open Day, scheduled to coincide with National Croquet Day 2016. Members of the public are invited to take up a mallet and try their skill at hitting the balls at various distances, in the hope of being first to get through the hoops. Club members will be on hand to offer advice and assistance. All that is needed to take part are flat soled shoes and clothing appropriate to the weather conditions. The following weekend, 11/12 June, the nationally-known player-turned-coach Cliff Jones is returning to Ramsgate to manage the CA (Croquet Association) Golf Open Championship. This tournament attracts some of the best players from the UK and abroad. On the Monday and Tuesday following this event, Cliff Jones returns to the lawns to offer club members coaching in both golf and association croquet. Wednesday 22 June sees the return of the local

Then on Sunday 24 July, the club’s annual Mixed Ability Golf Tournament pairs club members with higher handicaps with fellow members on a lower handicap, in a doubles competition with a difference, organised by Lee Ault and Douglas Cossey. Ramsgate Croquet Club also runs a junior section for 8-18 year olds, with sessions on Saturday morning beginning at 10am. All of the juniors’ coaches are fully qualified and police checked. Visitors are always welcome to view the matches, either at the lawns themselves, or from the higher vantage point on Royal Parade. The festival is only an hour and a half from London on the high-speed train making it a day trip for any eager beach thrill seeker. Not many festivals around the UK can boast that”. “The Wheels and Fins Festival, a relative newcomer on the Kent events calendar, is now entering it’s 5th year, and, thanks to the passion and dedication of a small management team, and an army of local volunteers, the festival continues to grow year upon year. This year, Wheels and Fins 2016 is set to be better than ever. Wheels and Fins pulls together everything that’s great about the Kent coastal lifestyle: action sports, beautiful beaches, great food and exciting music. We like sand between our toes, and salt in our hair; and the vision of the Wheels and Fins team has always been to provide a family friendly event, that delivers everything that

makes a summer on the Isle of Thanet unique – in a single weekend. Wheels and Fins 2016 is guaranteed to be combine everything which has made the festival a success in previous years, with innovative and creative ideas to provide attendees with a brand new experience. In 2015, the third annual Wheels and Fins festival ended on a high, with locally renowned musicians and DJs playing out the last few hours of the festival as the sun set on another awesome season on Joss Bay beach. Festival organiser, and owner of the infamous Joss Bay Surf School, Dave Melmoth, pledged to return this year, with something even bigger and better to round off the season with an incredible Wheels and Fins 2016. Momentum is gathering, and anticipation is already bubbling away in expectation of this year’s festival – with internationally recognised artists on the bill and famous names from the worlds of surf, skate and BMX lined up to take part. The aim of the Wheels and Fins team has always been to create an inclusive festival, which doesn’t only cater for the interests of action sports fans, but also for the local Thanet community and tourists from outside of the area. There’s tonnes on offer for foodies, children, and those who just love a cold beer on the beach, not to mention opportunities to try something new. This committed team continues to grow, and with some characters on board for Wheels and Fins 2016, there are certainly some great things just around the corner at Joss Bay.”

Spare Time? Why Not Try Volunteering!

You Can Make a Difference Thanet Community Support Partnership is a central point of contact for a group of organisations who each support older people in various ways. The aim is to reduce isolation and boost morale, and one way of doing this is by using volunteers to help. If you have a few hours to spare in the week, there are many ways you can make a difference to an older person. It may be as a volunteer befriender, who can pop in on someone regularly for a cup of tea and a chat, help with shopping or maybe go for a drive just to break up the day and give the older person something to look forward to.

dementia, by visiting them in hospital and helping to stimulate memories and conversation. Training is given. If you like the sound of any of these and you are over 18, why not ring Lou or Fran for a chat on 01843 597115, email tcspc@ hotmail.co.uk or go to www. thanetcommunitysupport.org Thanet Community Support Partnership is hosted by Thanet Volunteer Bureau.

It may be that organising paperwork is your thing! It’s easy to get in a mess with paperwork, especially if you have been ill. Sadly, sometimes older people need someone to speak up for them when dealing with authorities and businesses, or maybe just a little help with form filling to ensure they are receiving the entitlements they are due. Volunteer Advocates help with all of this and more. Full training is given. Being in a wheelchair can make it difficult to enjoy a day out. By volunteering to help on the minibus, you could spend the day with a wheelchair user, helping them to enjoy a trip out. Volunteers can also help people with

Young Person’s Travel Pass To meet the cost of increases to bus fares, the cost of the Young Person’s Travel Pass will rise by £20, Kent County Council has said. The concessionary scheme’s costs to the council can change each year, based on use and on the average fare of operators. With fares set to increase, KCC has said it needs to raise the price in order to cover the cost to the Kent taxpayer. Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport Matthew Balfour said: “Having had lengthy discussions with bus operators we understand fares will rise by 3% on average.

We are open 7 days a week

“This means, without an increase, it would cost the taxpayer over £400,000 a year. “Budgets right across the council are becoming extremely tough but I believe the pass still represents excellent value for money – especially compared to the cost of normal bus travel and it remains an extremely generous scheme. “The daily cost will rise from £1.31 a day to £1.42 a day. With the pass cost at £270, the KCC subsidy remains between £200 and £230 per pass on average.”

What’s the point of the hoverboard? Now before you reach for the Daily Mail article saying they’re illegal on the roads and it doesn’t even hover like Doc Brown intended it to, there’s no denying they have really caught on lately. I’ve been given a board for the weekend and after wobbling at first, a few minutes later I was spinning around and it found it incredibly stable, tough and with the Bluetooth link up to my phone, it made a rather good portable jukebox. The first thing that struck me was how tough it is. It’s got a steel plate running through it, so after jumping off and flipping it into a wall (like I did) it remained unscathed. Stepping on is like getting onto a podium – like a stage rising up at the O2. It’s very stable and the wide tyres are capable of riding comfortably over a small bump. Leaning forwards to go forwards and backwards to stop is very intuitive.

The horror stories are all true. There are manufacturers out there who make boards that set on fire due to cheap parts and no fuses. So if you’re going to get a good all-rounder, make sure you go for a British standards approved board from a shop, not a short term seller like those on eBay. This one I used is CE approved, they deliver, has a Samsung battery for twelve miles of travel, the mobile phone Bluetooth with speaker AND the all important fused plug for £375. www.londonhoverboards.com Josh Coleman

Steering is incredibly accurate too. The Hoverboard is not like a bike, it’s an extension of yourself, it replaces walking for getting around and you have almost the same mobility. You can ride into the narrowest corners, up hills and with a top speed of 11mph it’s great fun.

Beachcombing Bottles After the January gales of 1953, the beaches from Walmer to Pegwell Bay were littered with jetsam. Beachcombers at Sandwich Bay found some very interesting and curious shaped bottles that had washed ashore. A number of these were discovered intact – and a few were still corked and contained their original contents.

the contents of the wreck’s hold, the bottles were washed ashore in vast quantities. The alerted local inhabitants were quick in rescuing those bottles that had not broken in the surf. Coastguards did their utmost to relinquish this illicit windfall from the residents. Nevertheless, some of the populace decided to empty the bottles contents before they could be confiscated. It was recorded that one old lady died on the beach through alcohol poisoning.

A local fishmonger scooped up five bottles whilst he was pushing his shrimp net, and Mrs B.Longmore of Sandwich, walking along the beach, found six. From the broken bottles that lay shattered above the tide line Major-General and Mrs I.D.Erskine discovered four more undamaged.

When the original divers discovered the Loanda in the 1970s, they described the cargo holds of the rusting wreck to be similar to the stacked shelves of Tesco’s. Racks of bottles were everywhere to be seen, and most of them still with their corks in place. However, time and saltwater had spoilt the contents of the bottles and there were none that were drinkable.

These squat dark green bottles had the profile of a ships’ decanter. Their contents were certainly undrinkable and the fluid had an unpleasant aroma that was hard to dispel, however, it was their shape that made them collectable. Later, it was found that most of these bottles came from the ships that were lost in the great storm of 1703. Some were from the vessels cargo and many others were from the officers’ personal wine supplies. In those days much of the ships’ water became stagnant and the crews’ would rely on beer to quench their thirst – normally a gallon a day. However, wine was sometimes the preferred taste of the ship’s captain and officers, and these onion shaped bottles contained a pint and a half of the liquid.

It must be remembered that anything of value, washed up, or found on the foreshore should be declared to the Receiver of Wreck. Not to do so is classed as ‘theft by finding’ and could lead to a prosecution. By David Chamberlain

Needless to say, the precious onion bottles were not discarded when empty. Some were refilled with wine when the ship put into different ports during the voyage. In the Mediterranean, the officers occasionally used them to store olive oil. Another spate of bottles was found at St Margaret’s Bay in 1908. These were from the wreck of the Loanda, which sank inshore just east of the Bay. The Loanda’s destination was the West Coast of Africa and part of her cargo was 6,000 cases of gin, and the same again in rum and schnapps. When the winter weather started to wash out 28

Confused about the I’m sure that I’m not the only one confused about the up-coming EU Referendum on June 23 and the pros and cons of staying or leaving the EU. On the face of it, Britain leaving the EU and becoming an independent state with free trade and more control over its legislation, fishing, borders and future seems like a good idea. The complexity of a Brexit might not be as clear cut, or as one sided as I thought. Like many people in the UK, I’m now frantically reading up and questioning both sides of the argument as the referendum draws closer. How we vote, and the long term affects will have implications for generations to come. One of the major concerns and one that has undoubtedly forced the government to call a referendum, is the issue of immigration. As a member state of the EU, there is a freedom of movement of people from other EU states and one argument for exiting the EU would be that we, as a country would regain control of our borders and have more say about the regulation governing immigration. There is a counter argument that thousands of Britain’s travel around Europe every year, whether it be on business or holiday, and this would not be as easy to do if Britain were to become independent. Do we also rely to some

There is also the question whether Britain has lost its identity and by leaving the EU would we begin to get this back. Are we “Great Britain” with our morals, history and patriotism or are we “Little Britain” a subservient state of the bigger European Union? There are concerns that the EU dictates so much of the bureaucracy and red tape in this country, agriculture, farming, fishing etc and it appears that we are paying £55 million a day in EU membership for the privilege. After a lot of searching through the internet, I’m struggling to see that we are actually gaining financially as

of these migrant workers to keep the cost of our manufacturing and agriculture cost down? If you were to look at a proportion of unskilled workers in manufacturing, farming, production etc are these migrant workers. So if we left the EU and tightened our immigration to the extent that some would like us to, would we see a shortage of workers? This shortfall could be taken up with English workers that would perhaps be demanding higher rates of pay and better working conditions.

EU Referendum? a direct result of this. It seems there is still a deficit on our investment. The EU does fund some of the poorer communities with grants and subsidies, but surely we could just inject some of the £55 Million a day we pay in membership directly in to this? The pro-Europe campaigners say that if we stay in the EU is we are viewed as a much more attractive investment for other countries, we get more of a vote of confidence for investment and trade and that by exciting the EU and going it alone. They feel that a Brexit could see us with years of economic uncertainty and that it’s better the devil you know. Britain, is at the moment is one of the strongest economies in Europe and even the world, so would we be risking this if we left the EU? There have been benefits in being part of the EU, we have better working conditions, cleaner beaches and environment, but equally there have been the negatives of being dictated to by Brussels on what we can and can’t do in our own country and having to follow their rules and regulations. We will all get to have our say in the referendum on June 23, so make sure you choose wisely with an informed decision.

“Go outside. Remain” Nick Offerman

A wise man once said go outdoors and remain there. There might still be a chill in the air but days are getting longer and the galanthus are in bloom – it’s the perfect time to prep the garden. Here are some beginner tips to get you started at this time of year.

One: Get your tools in order

Everyone needs the tools of their trade. My big five for the garden are fork, spade, hoe, rake, and trowel. A good pair of gloves are a must and a decent pair of secateurs will be at home in your pocket. A wheelbarrow completes the rock star look.

Two: Compost

One of the first things you want to establish is a compost heap. This can begin as simply a sunny corner in the garden where you put your vegetable scraps but you’ll soon want a container of sorts. There are numerous ones available on the market but it’s an easy job (and fun) to construct one from scrap timber or pallets, old tyres, bricks or wire mesh. A quick search online will yield countless tutorials; ignore them all and make up your own design. Avoid placing the heap on concrete, patio slabs or tarmac. You want a site on bare soil so worms and other creatures can colonise, they help mix the compost. When adding ingredients include a healthy mix of green (vegetable peelings, fruit waste, tea bags, plant prunings, grass cuttings etc.) and brown (cardboard egg boxes, scrunched up paper, small twigs etc.) waste. Do not add meat or cooked food waste, this attracts rats, and avoid citrus. Some egg shells provide good minerals though!

Three: Prepare the ground

In other words: weeding. Dig out tired old shrubs and weeds, especially perennials (thistle, nettle, bindweed etc.) Try to remove all parts of the roots, but don’t be over hasty. My grandfather would tell me a garden would only ever be finished if there was nothing left to take out. Use a fork to turn the soil over, hoe and then rake. Then bask in satisfaction. At this time of year if you’re not going to plant anything for another week or two then it helps to lay some old carpet over your freshly turned soil. This prevents new weeds from getting any sunlight and helps warm the ground.

Five: Sit

Another tip from my grandfather: when the work is complete don’t forget to sit in the garden; it’s important to enjoy the space you’ve created. If the nights are a little chilly, grab some blankets, get a fire pit on the go, cuddle up and crack open a bottle of the parsley wine you’ve had brewing in the shed since last year. You didn’t think we were sowing herbs for a salad now did you!

A simple way to start planting is sow some herb seeds in small pots with fresh compost and sit them inside by a window with plenty of light. Water regularly but don’t drown them. Basil, parsley and thyme are all pretty easy to look after and don’t take long to grow. If you also grow tomatoes this year some basil will taste great with them.

The Micro Museum in Ramsgate Tucked away on Church Hill, off the High Street in Ramsgate, you will find The Micro Museum, the only Museum of computing in the County of Kent.

this year, The Micro Museum is the place to: • DISCOVER the history of personal computing and learn about the ideas and stories of the inventors of the digital age • Indulge in some NOSTALGIA and see if you can find your first computer among the hundreds of items on display • DO the history quiz and earn a fun certificate. Younger visitors can do the toy hunt and earn their own mini certificate • Enjoy unlimited PLAY on classic games (all included in the admission price)

The Museum is the showcase for Mike and Carol Deer’s unique personal collection of vintage computers, games and micro electronics, gathered together by the husband and wife team since they bought their first home computer in the 1980s. They realised that developments were happening so fast that there was a real danger of the devices disappearing forever as people discarded them to make way for the latest innovations. The collection grew over the years with the addition of more PCs, games consoles, accessories and toys until, with hundreds of items in storage, they realised that their best plan was to create a place where they could allow others to enjoy the digital past. In 2005, with fond memories of childhood holidays in the area with their respective families, they decided on Ramsgate as the location for the museum. A trial Summer season was successful but family commitments put a halt to their hopes to open as a permanent attraction. 9 years later, when they had retired, they found new premises on Church Hill and re-launched the Museum. Now, having opened for the third season at Easter

Mike and Carol run the Museum themselves as an independent business. This gives them the ability to respond to and interact with their visitors, giving a personal welcome and sharing their enthusiasm and stories with them. Many visitors have their own stories to tell and chatting - perhaps with other visitors they have never met before - adds to the friendly, relaxed atmosphere for old and young alike. Schools and groups are welcomed too. Last year, the oldest visitor was a 90 year old gentleman who had worked with computers all his life and asked to visit as part of his birthday celebrations. The youngest was 18 months old, fascinated by the screen displays as Mum enjoyed playing games. Until October, the Museum will open on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays plus Fridays during local school holidays. 1-4pm on all days. You can find a useful downloadable calendar of all the dates, an easy to follow local map and lots more information on the website www. themicromuseum.org. For news and chat about vintage computers, games and the digital world in general, The Micro Museum can also be found on Facebook.
