Message from the Chair I hope that everyone in Tupton had a good summer and feel suitably refreshed to tackle the colder weather as autumn and winter approaches. I would like to take the opportunity of thanking all those in the Events Committee and their wider group of volunteers for once again putting on such an excellent carnival in July. However if the village is to have a carnival next year we must have new volunteers so please put your name forward to help. The Parish Council had a stand at the carnival and we were very pleased that so many people stopped by to talk to us and raise issues. Many of these were about crime and antisocial behaviour in the village, particularly speeding and reckless driving on roads in Tupton. We are shortly to be meeting with Alan Charles, Police and Crime Commissioner to discuss these issues including concerns about the lack of a visible police presence in the village and also about response times to reports to the police. Tupton is regarded as a low crime area relative to other areas which is good but we believe, can mean we are not always given sufficient priority, and even one crime or incident of anti social behaviour is one too many and so traumatic for the victims. Speeding in particular is very concerning - we do not want to see lives lost in our village before action is taken. On the subject of potential lives lost, the Parish Council has recently purchased a public access

defibrillator which is being installed outside the pharmacy in Green Lane. A public access defibrillator is a machine that any member of the public can without training (as the machine gives spoken instructions) use on someone in cardiac arrest. It will detect the heart’s rhythm and will give a shock if needed. The Parish Council is also arranging training in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation first aid techniques that can be used if someone is not breathing properly or if their heart has stopped. After cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces someone’s chance of survival by 10%. So this equipment saves lives. It was therefore with horror that we discovered that within 24 hours of the box to contain the defibrillator being installed it had been damaged through being kicked around. Fortunately the equipment itself had not been installed at that point. However if it had been there, this could have cost lives. Far too often our community assets, things that have been installed for the benefit of local people are being damaged through mindless vandalism. Damaging community assets is not clever, costs a lot of money, your money, to repair or replace, and can have far reaching consequences. I would ask that local people are vigilant to help protect our collective property. The local village CCTV will target our assets but if you see someone damaging them please do not hesitate to report it. Cathy Goodyer Chair of Parish Council

Tags Festival with Rugby World Cup As part of the lead-up celebration to the Rugby World Cup, Tupton Rugby Club were invited to enter a Tag Team (U8s) into a competition at Chatsworth House where they were able to meet former winner and Leicester Tigers legend Neil Back as well as have their picture taken with the Cup!

Tupton Tags fantastic performance at Chatsworth Mini/Junior Secretary Debbie Baggaley reports: “The Tag Team played in a festival at Chatsworth on Sunday 9th August. The boys were on top form and gave a fantastic performance. They played seven games against Tag Teams from local sides. They drew with Chesterfield (2-2), Derby (5-5), Matlock (4-4), beat Dronfield (5-2), Bakewell (5-4), Amber Valley (4-3) and only lost one game, Belper (4-6).

8

It was a long hot day for them but they played very well, getting to see the World Cup and have their photos taken as well as receiving a medal from England Player, Neil Back. Paul Sorrell managed to get a club shirt signed. The performance that the boys gave at the festival was fantastic proving that all the time and effort Paul and Dave Stewart gave to them during last season has paid off. The boys can hold their heads up high and will start the new season knowing they are a Team who, on their day, can be a match for anyone!

1st Tupton Scouts A Very Busy Summer! The summer period has been a very busy time for the 1st Tupton Scout Group. On Saturday the 18th July the group took part in the carnival parade put on by the Tupton Events Committee. Children from across the scout sections dressed as characters from ‘Harry Potter’, we even had our very own ‘Hagrid’ on his custom built bike. Judging took place on the route and we were lucky enough to be given 1st place. The children enjoyed looking around the carnival stalls and watching the many attractions. At the beginning of the summer holidays the scout section attended ‘Peak Camp’ which is an international camp for both boys and girls. Sub camps included the Vikings, Ice Age and the one that we were on Aztec. The Scouts had a fabulous time, taking part in a variety of activities, which included, canoeing, climbing, sailing, swimming and a camp challenge. The weather was kind to us and thanks must be sent

10

to all of the leaders and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the camp the success it was. The Beaver Scouts also visited for the day, taking part in a variety of activities and later joined the Centaurus Explorer group for lunch. The Beavers had a great time, going home tired, but happy. At the beginning of September the group carried out the annual rubbish collection and litter pick at Chatsworth Country Fair. This activity is enjoyed by both children and adults alike. Many parents opt to camp at the event and many friendships are formed that last long after their children have left scouts and moved on to pastures new. This event is the groups’ main fundraising activity and enables the children to take part in activities that we would not normally be able to facilitate. It also helps towards the upkeep of the group hut and minibus. We have some fantastic leaders, parents and friends of the group who support our activities tirelessly, and we are always very grateful to them.

Birkin Avenue Improvements

Key

Prop

The Parish Council is looking to make improvements to the Birkin Avenue Recreation Ground and has commissioned Groundwork Creswell to come up with a possible proposal on how the land can be used. This plan is a draft of how the land may be developed in the future and your views are being sought at this early stage on what you think about these proposals. You will have received with this magazine a questionnaire on the proposed development which the Council would be grateful if you could complete and return it to either the letter box in the village hall or one of your local parish councillors. Alternatively you can contact the Clerk to the Council on either 01246 238738 or via email clerk@tuptonpc.org.uk and let him know your views.

Tupton Carnival 2015 This very popular community event was held on Saturday, 18th July, again on the Primary School field. The Carnival Parade with the Royal Hussars, Chesterfield Musketeers, and a gaily coloured Samba Band set the pace in the procession for the many floats and walking groups, beginning at 1pm from Ford Street, Tupton. The 2014 Carnival Queen began the action on the field by greeting the new Queen and Princesses for the crowning ceremony. Display teams included the Samba Band, the ever popular Dayko Flying Angels, new activity BMX Bike demo team, and local dancers from Primary Colours. Laser Quest, a Climbing Wall, and a Flight Simulator were among the attractions, and many children’s rides and the

Tupton Parish Council Magazine

Fun House created amusement and laughter for everyone all afternoon. Local art, community volunteer groups and local history was represented, classic vehicles and birds of prey were exhibited, and refreshments and barbecue food was available to all. The winning scarecrows and all those not so lucky scarecrows from the village competition were on show, and the Frozen mascot was wandering the arena looking for photo opportunities. A wide choice of music and entertainment was provided for all the family in the arena and around the field, and everyone seemed to appreciate the efforts made to provide another memorable Carnival.

Firework top ten safety tips Everybody loves Bonfire Night especially the fireworks but lets make sure that we enjoy it safely. Here are our firework top ten safety tips… Young people should watch and enjoy fireworks at a safe distance and follow the safety rules for using sparklers. Only adults should deal with firework displays and the lighting of fireworks. They should also take care of the safe disposal of fireworks once they have been used. 1

Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable.

2

Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time.

3

Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary.

4

Light the firework at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back.

5

Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.

6

Never return to a firework once it has been lit.

7

Don’t put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.

8

Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators.

9

Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire.

Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings 10 are made safe before leaving.

Alternatively why not join the organised event that is taking place on Friday 30th October starting at 6.30pm on the Northside Recreation Ground. The event is being organised by Tupton Rugby Club.

Or why not join in the fun at the Halloween Party which is being organised by the Tupton Events Committee and will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 31st October at 7pm. Tickets cost £3 and available by contacting a member of the Events Committee on 07948 625179 Come if you dare…

Wicked trip to see former Tupton Hall student Savannah on West End stage Wicked was the word of the week at Tupton Hall School after students had the trip of a lifetime in London. Nearly 50 students – all passionate about the performing arts – got to see hit West End musical ‘Wicked’, which stars one of Tupton Hall’s former students Savannah Stevenson in a lead role. Students watched in awe as Savannah stole the show as Glinda the Good Witch. “It was a fantastic experience for our youngsters to be able to see Savannah on stage. I hope it inspired them to aspire to achieve great things,” said music

20

teacher Mr Andrew Sharpe who led the trip. Savannah, now 32, was a Tupton Hall student from 1994 – 2001. She has held the lead role in Wicked since November 2013 when the show started at the capital’s Apollo Victoria Theatre. But that wasn’t the only West End experience for the Tupton Hall teens. In the space of two days they managed to take in many of London’s greatest attractions including a performance of Les Misérables. Afterwards, the Chesterfield contingent hopped on a bus tour taking in sights such as Downing

Street, Horse Guards Parade, Trafalgar Square and Big Ben. And there was just enough time for a shopping spree at Covent Garden where students put their haggling skills to the test grabbing souvenir bargains including a selfie stick and a Star Wars mug. A dance workshop at the legendary Pineapple Dance Studios was the icing on the cake. The energetic youngsters were taught a routine from Wicked and impressed their tutors with their jaw dropping moves!

A&A Minibuses • 16 full-size coach seats • Large boot & luggage trailer • Local, friendly company • Fully CRB checked • Ring Tony for a quote

Mr Sharpe concluded: “Everyone had an amazing time. Students’ behaviour was impeccable and they did the school proud representing Chesterfield in the big city.”

Tupton Local History Society Catherine Moorcroft has been telling us about her granddad, Fred Harris, who was an Air Raid Warden during WW2. Fred enrolled on 2nd June 1939. Catherine has some of his certificates and a 1945 “Thank you” letter from Derbyshire County Council as well as his Air Raid Warden tin hat. He lived at Red Tile Row on Nethermoor Road. He was a coal miner by profession, so would have spent much of his spare time on his ARP duties- voluntary of course. The wardens met at Old Tupton Methodist Church. Some of the other wardens were probably Miss Jessie Creswell, and John Bainbridge. These two people lived on Ashover Road. There were others, but we don’t have all their names at the moment.

Do you have any information about these people and others who volunteered their time to protect the civilian population? This includes volunteers who assisted people during their stay in public air raid shelters. They were given this badge:

We did find some names from the Derbyshire Times of 13th January 1939. The article is about anti-gas training certificates and ARP badges being awarded to the following Tupton area residents: Miss Daisy Brummell (R.D.C. telephone operator), Mr. Graham Bennett (Hepthorne Lane). Mesdames I. Brinkler (New Tupton). M. H. Elvin, W. Hancock, E. Herrett. M. McGoola, L. Smith. R. Statham. G. A. Booth (New Tupton). G. Jackson (Tupton). Miss Irene Page (Old Tupton), Messrs. W. Bambridge. R. E. Green. P. Swift. J. L. Willows. F. W. Miles (New Tupton), A. Ferguson. F. Hancock (Tupton). H. H. Middleditch. A. E. Smith (Tupton) and W. Page (Old Tupton). It’s interesting that as early as the beginning of 1939 (and even earlier), the country was preparing for a war that was, presumably, seen as inevitable.

As a side note, Miss Jessie Cresswell was head or deputy head at Mortimer Wilson School in Alfreton. She was an education pioneer and fought for the introduction of comprehensive education in Derbyshire. Until 1947, female teachers were not allowed to keep their jobs as teachers if they married, so Miss Creswell was probably a life-long spinster. She lived with her two sisters, Nan and Dolly. Nan was a Great War nurse in Egypt and Silesia, where conditions were very harsh and many died of disease. Silesia is now part of Poland. It was part of the German Empire prior the Great War.

Jesse Creswell The Tupton Local History Society is currently doing some historical research for the Royal Oak. Also, for someone who is trying to find information about one of the residents of Tupton Hall, Mr. Lord. Allegedly, he was robbed by his own coachman and was executed for the crime. Does anyone know any details of this story? We’ve been unable to find anything up to now. John Quick sent us some photos of Jesse Creswell, who is the great-uncle of Eamonn Cave of North Wingfield. John asks us to credit Eamonn for the photographs. Thank you John and Eamonn. We would also like to say a sincere “thank you” to all our supporters: • Councillor Brian Wright and Derbyshire County Council for providing funding for AV equipment • The Brittania for displaying posters • Tupton Fish and Chip shop for displaying posters • The Cornerstone Cafe for displaying posters • The New Inn for displaying posters • Queenies Cafe for displaying posters • The Royal Oak for displaying posters • Clay Cross D.I.Y. for displaying posters • Clay Cross Tesco for displaying posters • Tupton Parish Council for displaying posters • Oilwell Nursery, Tibshelf, for displaying posters • St John’s Church for providing the venue for our meetings and events • And you, our individual supporters, for attending our events. Our May event featured Janet Murphy talking about the black and white buildings of Chesterfield. Most of them are relatively recent “mock Tudor”. Many of them are in poor condition, such as the Victoria buildings on Knifesmithgate. William Stones owned a number of pubs in Chesterfield, most of them built in this black-and-white pattern.
