Recipe

Ricotta Dip with Crushed Tomatoes & Bruschetta Ingredients 2 x 250g tubs ricotta

200g tub light cream cheese Small bunch mint, chopped, plus a few leaves to serve Small bunch chives, snipped 450g ripe cherry tomatoes (we used a mixture of red & yellow) 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 1 tsp caster sugar 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus a little extra to drizzle For the bruschetta 1 French baguette (or gluten-free bread), thinly sliced 2 tbsp olive oil 2 fat garlic cloves, squashed

With the arrival of summer, our appetites change from wanting filling winter comfort foods to a lighter easier dinner that we can enjoy al fresco. Method In a large bowl, mix the ricotta, cream cheese, mint, chives and some salt. Once this is smooth, spread over a large plate or a wide, shallow bowl, creating a dip in the centre to hold the tomatoes. Place in the fridge and chill until ready to serve. In another bowl, crush and rip up the tomatoes with your hands until they are in small chunks and really juicy. Then strain through a sieve and discard the juice. Add the vinegar, sugar, olive oil and a good pinch of salt. Mix together, then put to one set aside. Heat a griddle pan until smoking hot. Brush the bread slices with olive oil and rub with the garlic cloves. Place on the hot griddle for 1-2 minutes each side until nicely charred - you’ll have to do this in batches. Place the squashed tomatoes on top of the ricotta spread. Drizzle this with extra virgin olive oil and scatter with the remaining mint. Place in the centre of the table and let everyone dip in with the charred bruschetta.

Welcome…

To our Summer 2015 edition of the Unstone Parish Council magazine.

We were unable to produce a Spring Issue this year partly because our publishers, Community Ad were in the throes of moving office at that time. Community Ad do a fantastic job for us, producing the magazine without any cost to the Parish Council, it’s all funded by the advertisers. Please do let the advertisers know you have seen their adverts in Unstone Parish Council magazine as we rely absolutely on them for this excellent facility! It was also a very busy Spring for our Councillors and Officers with the elections on 7th May and a lot of work involved in the run up to the elections and the aftermath. Even though we had all our Parish Councillors who were standing for election returned uncontested, it is technically a whole new Council, with a lot of Declarations to be made and paperwork to be completed, Standing Orders and Financial Regulations to be reviewed and adopted. It is just as well we only have to go through that every four years. We are all looking forward to getting back to the job of looking after the interests of all the residents of the Parish of Unstone. Please do continue to give us feedback on any issues or concerns – contact the Clerk by telephone (usually available between 3.00 pm and 5.00 pm weekdays), or by email or post.

A Farewell to Patricia This year our long-standing Finance Officer Patricia Mosley announced her retirement to take effect in April. The Council presented Patricia with flowers and a card of thanks for her many years of doing a terrific job of keeping Unstone Parish Council’s finances and records in good order. We will all be very sorry to lose Patricia, but she is looking forward to spending more quality time with her family, and especially her grandchildren. The Council send her very best wishes for a long and happy retirement.

A Welcome to Emma Emma Smith joined the Parish Council as our new Finance Officer and attended the 16th April meeting to be introduced to the Councillors and public attending. We look forward to working with Emma and hope she will be very happy steering the Council’s finances for many years.

Unstone Parish Council Magazine Key issues the Parish Council has been dealing with over recent months l As usual the Parish Council has supported residents by reporting maintenance, highways and environmental issues to the relevant authorities. We are particularly pleased that after a request from a resident, following correspondence from UPC, NEDDC has agreed to look at how it can help with surface maintenance of the unadopted lane to Spring Bank which is in real need of some attention.

provides an opportunity for a more directly controlled service. It is intended that this will be implemented later in the year when all the necessary training and equipment is in place.

l The Parish Council has been consulted on all Planning Applications in the Parish. Anyone objecting to a planning application should put their objection in writing to NEDDC Planning Department directly. You can do this on-line at the NEDDC website Planning Portal. However, it would be of benefit if the objections were also copied to Unstone Parish Clerk so the Parish Council can be made aware of neighbours’ objections and bear them in mind when they consider the application. Councillors wouldn’t necessarily be aware if a proposed new building or extension was likely to cause problems for a neighbour. Councillors may not always agree with the neighbours’ objections but in some cases they may wish to support the neighbours’ point of view.

l There have been a number of instances of vandalism over the past few months. A bin belonging to NEDDC was set on fire on Windmill Lane, signs at the Play Areas have been damaged, and some of the play equipment has been damaged and removed. The Parish Warden inspects the Play Areas and other facilities on a regular basis. Whilst the Parish Council tries to keep these facilities in good condition, we cannot afford to keep on repairing and replacing expensive fixtures.

l The Parish Council is making arrangements that Martyn Brown our Caretaker and Paul Addy our Parish Warden will look after more of the Parish’s grounds maintenance. We currently have a contract with NEDDC for grounds maintenance – most of the mowing and planting and general maintenance of the landscaping in the village. The Parish Council has examined the potential for cost saving which at the same time

l This year the Parish Council is pleased to make a donation to both churches for the Year of Flowers for the churches display. The display will be on at the end of June and we know it will be much appreciated by Unstone Parish residents.

l The Caretaker and Parish Warden have given the Fred Hopkinson Memorial Hall a make-over. The redecoration and new lighting etc has really improved the ambience of the venue. It continues to be well-used by various community groups, and is available for booking for wedding receptions, christening parties, children’s or adult’s birthday parties and any other occasions. For hall bookings contact Martyn Brown on 01246 454026. These are just a few of the key issues the Parish Council has been dealing with. Full meeting minutes are posted on the Parish Website in due course, and copies are available for members of the public at the meetings, or on request from the Clerk. Email clerk@unstone.org.uk

DANGER Deep water!

Tree Survey

On a very hot day earlier in the year, we were alerted to the fact that a number of children were playing in the River Drone where it runs through the Whittington Lane play area.

The survey looks at the Health and Safety of all the trees which are on Parish Council land, and is carrying out a programme of tree surgery and maintenance wherever needed. This was prompted by the damage caused by the heavy snow over last winter which froze on the branches and put branches under extreme pressure from the weight of the ice. Also, some high winds earlier this year added to the problems caused by the snow, and left some of trees in a really precarious state.

The police were called to attend and warn children and parents that this is a deep and fast flowing section of the river which can be up to half a metre deep. It is stony and slippery underfoot, with a serious risk of loss of footing , and easily deep enough to drown in. It is extremely dangerous for anyone to be in the water. You should also be aware that the water is far from clean, and it has in the past suffered with sewage discharge from storm overflows as it flows down from Sheffield. Although it is cleaner than it used to be, you really wouldn’t want to risk it, however hot the weather might be. Unstone Parish Council has put up more warning signs and urges parents to warn their children about the risks of drowning and disease from unsupervised play in any river or pond.

Unstone Parish Council has recently commissioned a Tree Survey.

Residents should report any trees which they think may be a Health & Safety risk, or if trees are causing a nuisance. Please note that North East Derbyshire District Council and Derbyshire County Council both have responsibility for trees in Unstone which are not on Unstone Parish Council owned land. If you’re not sure who to report a tree to, report it to Unstone Parish Clerk and Allyson will make sure the appropriate authority is made aware. You would need to give very clear information about the exact location of the tree.

Pity the poor postie! Ok, over recent times, at least up to 7th May, you will have had lots through your letterboxes, including even, a leaflet from me! I hope you enjoyed reading all the election bumph! I quite enjoyed walking around the Parish, stopping to chat whenever I could, but it made me realise, just how much I pity the postie! Why? Well, not all letterboxes are easily accessible, some are at the base of the door, some are high up, many are awkward to open (wonder if that’s a ploy to jeep junk mail out!!) and lots have draft excluders, often making it quite hard to stuff items through. Then some are guarded on the inside by yappy pooches, just waiting for a stray finger to chew. And that’s only when you get as far as the front door… Before you get there…garden gates are all different…hinged left, hinged right, fasteners the other side, lift, slide, wiggle… You get accosted by hanging baskets, overhanging branches, loose steps, missing steps, little steps, big steps, uneven steps, slippy steps… sometimes you are met in the front garden by a big bouncing dog. I was trying to deliver to every household, but had I been looking for house numbers…that’s another issue! Numbers on front doors, front gates, garage doors, gate posts…and that’s only if there actually is a house number! Heaven help the emergency services…there should be a law making everybody’s house having a nice clear number!

10

So, please…think about making the postie’s job a bit easier! I actually was a postie some years back! Have a critical look next time you come home…and please make it so none of us will have to pity the postie! Richard Smith

New campaign challenges res A new campaign aimed at encouraging people to be healthier by eating less has been launched by Derbyshire County Council. The six month campaign, ‘Be Portion Size Wise’, urges people to think about whether they’re putting too much food on their plates. Obesity is a growing problem in the UK and Derbyshire is no exception with 66.9% of people now classed as overweight or obese. Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said: “Overeating by just 100 calories a day, which could be the equivalent of just a small chunk of cheese, can lead to an 11lb increase in weight in a year. “It’s also the case that today’s serving sizes are often bigger than they were 30 years ago which means we’re consuming a lot more calories than we used to, maybe without even realising. “Many of us have so-called ‘portion distortion’, where we no longer know what makes a normal portion of food. “That’s why we’ve launched our new portion control campaign and it all starts

with a very simple message - be portion size wise.” The campaign forms part of the ongoing Heart of Derbyshire healthy eating scheme and encourages people to think about how much they’re eating. It then challenges people to take part in a two week #PortionSizeWise portion control challenge with a chance to win healthy eating prizes. Councillor Allen added: “Portion control is not about stopping eating the foods you love and it’s not about fads or complicated diets. “It’s simply about eating less of the foods you already eat. “Eating a bit less can make a big difference to your weight and your overall health and it’s probably not as hard as people think.” To find out more about the campaign, sign up to the Portion Size Wise challenge and get lots of help and advice go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/portionsizewise
