Whitstable Castle Whitstable Castle is a stunning venue set in three acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, just 200m from Tankerton beach and a few minutes walk away from the historic Whitstable Harbour. Whitstable Castle or Tankerton Towers as it was first called started life as a residence for the Pearson family in the late 1790s and over its long history, it has been developed and improved by successive owners and a Heritage

Lottery Grant. Following a £3m refurbishment the Castle is now managed by the Whitstable Castle Trust. The Castle provides a unique and special venue for weddings, private parties, local classes, corporate and community events. The Orangery Tearooms are open seven days a week 10am to 5pm (April to October) and 10am to 4pm (November to March). The gardens are open to the public free of charge seven days per week and feature a fabulous pirate themed adventure playground for children.

Whitstable Basketball Club Whitstable Basketball Club competes in the East Kent Basketball League which was formed in 1962. The club has evolved and developed from the former Whitstable Pirates that was formed in the 80s by Gordon Nisbet, now retired from the Whitstable community college. After the Pirates folded, Gordon’s contribution to the sport led to the club being reformed in 96/97 by Jones, Sait & AF. Unfortunately the club had no home court and whilst the league accepted their entry to Division 2 every match was an away game. Whitstable won the league and promotion having won every match and AF was awarded the league MVP an honour he would earn again in Div 1 during the 97/98 campaign. The club based its self at a court in Canterbury whilst representing Whitstable gradually established itself and has always promoted a good standard of basketball within the community. The club has established the logo “Beat Whitstable” having dominated the league between 2002 and 2013 setting a record by winning 9 straight league titles and

10 in total together with a multitude of cup final appearances winning 6 in addition to the league trophies. Club players such as Gifford 99,04, Hurst 08 have also collected the league MVP award whilst representing Team W. The club now plays at Simon Langton on Friday 7.30pm to 9.30pm that is referred to as the fortress as only two teams in have ever won a match there, rivals Folkestone and UKC. Around the County Folkestone have lots going on with youth and National league development and a credit to East Kent, University of Kent (UKC) Last season winners have a new competitive roster whilst Ashford have developed there squad. Leaving remaining competition with; Club Invicta, Folks A and Nation league development Squad, Herne bay A and B, Thanet lions, and Christchurch College. Our motto is simple: “Beat Whitstable”. Enjoy hoops, we do - let’s go Whitstable.

Canterbury City Deaf Children’s F The club began life in January 2014, when it was set up by two mothers of deaf children, Sally Laker and Debbie Mead, after failing to find a deaf-friendly football team near them. The club’s ethos is to offer young deaf players a fun, friendly and non-competitive environment to practice in. A structured training session, covering skills, passing and shooting practice, is followed by a short match. Sally says about the club, “It is important to learn football skills, as football is so popular in school playgrounds and a deaf child might struggle to properly follow the rules and structure of the game. We started the club in January last year and now have 18 children, of various ages, in our squad. The club took off really quickly and we’re thrilled it’s going so well. It is a great way for deaf children to spend time with other deaf children. It boosts their confidence and hopefully they’re able to transfer their skills and play a part in football games in the playground, which is so important for making friendships at school. Of course, for the parents of deaf

or hearing loss are welcome. For more information about the team, please contact Sally on 07738 528802 or Debbie on 07720 669113

children, it’s an opportunity for us mums and dads to meet up and chat too!” Debbie Mead said, “We are delighted at the turn-out every week. The children have all got to know each other and it’s so lovely to see them helping each other out on the pitch.” The club runs on Monday nights in term time (fortnightly through the winter) at Whitstable Sports Centre from 5.30-6.30pm. All deaf children (their siblings are welcome to join in too) aged 5-12 are welcome. We ask for £1.50 per child per session to cover costs. All team members receive a full Canterbury City Football Kit. Our head coach Gemma Vass is fully trained in deaf awareness and signing support is on hand. The club is part of Canterbury City Football Club and is sponsored by local firm Cactus Security. Head coach Gemma said, “It’s so rewarding coaching a great bunch of children. It’s brilliant seeing them improve week on week and build new friendships. It is an absolute pleasure to work with them, as they always try their hardest and enjoy themselves.” We also organise events for the children and parents. So far we have had a sailing

Football Club day in Herne Bay, a visit from Mister Maker from CBeebies and tours of Wembley and Gillingham FC stadiums. Gillingham FC have helped us organise a trip to see them play in November, We also have award ceremonies at the end of the season. When was the Football Club Formed and Why did you decide to create a Football club for Deaf Children? The club was formed in January 2014 by myself and Debbie Mead. We had been talking about starting the club for a while, as we were looking for a deaf-friendly football club near us but couldn’t find one. We are both parents of deaf children - Debbie’s son Andrew is 11 and my son Toby is 7. We know it can be hard for deaf children to join in football games in the playground, so the idea behind the club was really to offer a fun and non-competitive place where deaf children can come and learn how to play football, and improve their skills. We also wanted to create somewhere for deaf children to meet other deaf children. How many people are involved with the running of the Club and has it been very challenging to get the club up and running? Debbie and I run the club together. We have a head coach, Gemma Vass, who leads three other coaches in teaching the children. All our coaches are volunteers. The main challenge in starting up the club was finding the financial help to pay for the hall, footballs, the equipment and the kits. Have you had a lot of support in setting the club up and is there any way our readers can help, ie sponsorship or volunteers etc? We were very lucky to be sponsored by local firm Cactus Security, Herne Bay Youth and Canterbury City Football Club, who covered the costs of our shirts and footballs. We also had help from the Kent Deaf Children’s Society, the Kent children’s hearing service and the local press in Whitstable who advertised the club. The Whitstable Sports Centre at the L

L Whitstable Community College helped us with the venue. We charge a small sub of £1.50 per child to cover costs. If you would like to help sponsor a team or volunteer please contact Tony Newington at Canterbury City Football Club. Is there a league for Deaf Children’s Football Clubs? Do you travel away and where is your home ground? We don’t play in a league. Our members are a range of ages, so it’s difficult to find enough of a similar age to form a team. We have had a visit from Herne Bay Youth under-8s, who trained with us and had a game, which ended in a draw. Our home ground is at the Whitstable Community College. We took the club to a tournament in Wembley last year, where we played against Peterborough and Brentford’s deaf children’s team. We’ve been talking to Gillingham FC about their soccer schools and leagues, so might look into that for next year if any of our players are interested. Has the club had a positive effect on the Children and families that are part of the club? Is it a good way of networking for parents and the Children Yes. The club has really taken off. We’ve had a lot of new members recently, which is great to see. The parents and the children seem to really enjoy coming along to the sessions. Lots of friendships have been made and it’s lovely to see the children helping each other out. Some of our children are the only deaf person in their school so it’s positive for them to meet other children who wear hearing aids or implants. They

16

Please mention

have all become really good friends and are so good at welcoming new children into the club and making them feel at home. As a parent, it fills me with pride to see that. For the parents, the club is an opportunity to meet and chat about anything and everything: to share experiences or pass on advice. Often there’s nobody else at the school gates who understands what it’s like to raise a deaf child, so getting to chat with other parents of deaf children is great. It’s a great way to network with other parents. We hold award ceremonies for the children every year and arrange outings, so the children can get to know each other better. We recently arranged a trip to Gillingham Football Club, where the children got to meet their first team, who kindly signed autographs and posed for photos. At the end of the trip, as we all returned to the team coach, we asked if anyone would be interested in going back to see The Gills play some day. The response was amazing. So the club is off to see its first game (Gillingham vs Bury) on November 14th. Hopefully, it will be the first of many outings to Priestfield. Who knows. Maybe one day, one of our players will be the first deaf player in the English League. Magazine when responding to advertisements

1953 flooding in W Sea Walls Following the passing of the Coast Protection Act in 1949, Whitstable Urban District Council engaged the services of the consultant engineers Lewis and Duvivier in order to improve the sea defences of Whitstable. The first scheme, prepared in 1950, involved the raising of the seawalls and the building of the new sea walls to +4.88 mOD. These works were nearing completion when the 1953 North Sea storm surge hit the east coast. At Whitstable the still water level reached +4.62 mOD and the new wall was overtopped by wave action although it was not seriously damaged. Flooding was exacerbated by the outflanking of defences at the Golf Course and to the west of the unit allowing water to flow into the low lying areas. This is sometimes known as ‘backdoorflooding’. In response to this catastrophic flood the new defences were raised to +5.79 m OD. The works were contracted to Lewis and Duvivier and completed within 1955.

Account of the duty engineer at the time “In the evening he was surprised to be called out between 11.00 and 11.30 p.m. and made a tour of inspection. The contractors Foreman had seen the sea coming over the Golf Course. On returning his car was flooded and stopped in the rising waters on the track at the West Beach Boating Lake. Returning on foot the average sea level was estimated at 15’ O.D. about midnight to 1 a.m. at West Beach and 15.3’ O.D. in the harbour at 0130 hrs falling to 14.5’ O.D. at 0200 hrs. (The Harbour S. Quay level). This was about 1 ft higher than ever recorded before (1899) and 6½ ft. more than the Admiralty predicted tide. The waves at Harbour Beach (Continental Hotel) were 5 to 6 ft. from crest to trough, say twice the size of those at the gale last March. The Harbour Beach bullnose was working but spray and shingle were coming over. Water came over the wall by wind and wave action, running up beach piled to the top of the wall at certain places at the Seasalter golf course, Caravan site, West Beach, Tennis Courts, Neptune/ Vigilant, Andersons shipyard, Kings Head Beach, Perkins shipyard, Horsebridge, Reeves Beach, Smithy Beach, Continental Hotel and 10” deep over the Harbour South and West quays running out through the level crossing, over the road, and along the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway into the reservoir and surrounding low parts of the town. The low parts of the town were flooded 2 to 5 ft deep and about 6 ft on the eastern part of the Seasalter Golf Links. The old clay wall was breached and eroded from the turn by the Boating Lake to the West Beach road bank (Star Hotel).” Extract from the Lewis and Duvivier (1953) Sea Wall Progress Report

Whitstable Impacts of flooding Defence failure at golf course caused back door flooding of the town. Highest flood waters recorded at 2m depth (at the Gorrell). Approximately half of all sea front houses had walls, windows, and doors stove in. All were wooden buildings except one. The brick building may have been rammed by a large block from the slipway which was destroyed (parts of which were found ½ mile westwards). 20 – 30 boats damaged some irreparably. The barge “Kathleen” at Anderson’s Shipyard was turned through a right angle, removing its length of the slipway and ramming the corner of the building and doors. R.J. Perkins shipyard lost the doors from both ends. Beach Huts - 98% lost, overturned or moved

2,000 tonnes of shingle thrown over the sea wall onto public and private property. No loss to human life. Evacuations by boat and gang planks. Domestic animals, poultry and cats drowned. Heavy flood damage to house interiors and furniture. The only damage to the new wall was 3ft. of the bullnose broken off and one corner cracked at West Beach caravan site. London- Whitstable railway line damaged.

Remediation Whitstable-Canterbury railway line re-opened to aid emergency repairs. Ponded water in town pumped out by Kent and Sussex fire brigade. Water drained from west beach and Seasalter golf course using channels and pipes - some people wanted to blow a hole in the wall! (prevented by contractors and council). 450ft of shingle bag wall was put in place before the next spring tides (done by the marines). Please mention

The 1953 floods…

a trip down memory lane At the beginning of November I met up with Anne Foster, a former Whitstable Resident who experienced the floods of 1953 at first hand. We revisited her family home and this was the first time in 63 years that Anne had been back inside her old house. Her former family home is now a guest house which has been run by Georgina Jenkins for the last 16 years. Anne and her family moved to number 4 Island Wall in the October of 1953. Her Dad worked for the gas board and her mother worked in the Tudor Café just along the road. The family moved to number 4 Island Wall in the October of 1953, just four months before the flood. Although Anne was just four years old when the flood happened, she has vivid recollections of the damage and devastation that the flood caused to her family home and the homes of her friends.

As we went back in to her old home Anne recounted how the water had come through the house over turning the family’s cooker in the lower level of the house. She could hear the water running down the alley at the side of her home outside her bedroom window and in to the street and up through the trapdoor that lead down to the cellar underneath the house. Anne and her family lived in the bottom the house which was badly damaged by the flood. We could still see some signs of where the damage had been as there are now wooden panels covering some of the walls through the bottom of the house. The house has kept so much of its old character and the layout downstairs wasn’t too dissimilar

to when Anne lived there, we could still see the trapdoor in the floor leading down to the cellar that Anne remembered as a child. Anne explained there was no warning of the floods so the community wasn’t prepared at all for the devastation caused. The community was quick to re-act after the floods with the Salvation Army, Red-cross and fire-brigade responding. Anne remembers the fire-brigade bringing in heaters and pumping water from her house and the houses along the road. Anne and her family stayed in the upstairs of the home with the couple called Mr and Mrs Marmont and they stayed with them for 6 weeks. Anne explained “My dad who worked for the gas company for 40 years had to row a boat down the street, turning off the mains to avoid explosions” he also brought us back tins of meat like spam and corned beef to eat and I remember my mum drying her woodbine cigarettes by the old coal fire.” The Salvation Army told everyone to go down to the parish hall, where they handed out clothes and each child got a toy, they also cooked hot meals in the nearby St Alphages School for the flood victims as well”. As the water was cleared from the streets they were able to bring through horse and carts with bundles of wood to fuel the fires in the homes. I’d thank to thank Anne for taking the time to come back to Whitstable to tell her story, it goes to show how we take things for granted and it’s not until a tragedy like this happens we understand the true force of nature.

Community Counselling “I set up Community Counselling Service (CCS) in 2008 to offer accessible and affordable counselling to those in the community of Canterbury and surrounding areas”, says director, Carrol Rouse. This service was based next door to the Umbrella Centre in Canterbury in a small cottage. After 8 years of providing counselling support from there, CCS moved on 1st September this year to Roper Close in order to expand the service and offer more availability to people in the Canterbury area. At present, CCS has 50 voluntary counsellors, all CRB checked and either Members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). All the counsellors have been trained or are in ongoing training with officially recognised training organisations. In these uncertain times, we can help clients work through many current and contemporary challenges, including redundancy or early retirement. The specialised counselling expertise covers a wide range of issues: • • • • • • • • •

Abuse Anger Anxiety Bereavement Childhood Sexual Abuse Depression Disability Domestic Violence Family Issues

• • • • • • • • •

Loss Low Self-Esteem Mental Health OCD Post-Natal Depression Panic Attacks Post-Traumatic Stress Relationships Sexual Identity & Stress

Mental health problems are continuing to increase and people face difficulties such as anxiety and/or depression. Their lives are completely dominated by mental illness and, as a result, they are unable to live a normal life. They are affected physically by panic attacks and illnesses, and psychologically by low self esteem, eating problems, indecisiveness and suicidal thoughts – to name a few. GPs are overwhelmed by the number of patients with mental health problems manifesting as physical ailments. Counselling is a viable alternative to medication and CCS offers accessible counselling to those 24

who would not normally be able to benefit for financial reasons. We offer the opportunity to explore difficulties without limiting the number of sessions as often clients present with issues which require more longer term work. This therapy is not available on the NHS where short term counselling of 6-8 sessions is on offer. As the client’s mental health improves, their confidence and self esteem increases along with relationships with others. This in turn usually leads to less reliance on prescription drugs and GPs, thereby reducing the pressure on GP surgeries. Referrals come from GP surgeries, mental health teams and many other sources, including self referral. People accessing CCS services are often disadvantaged because they are unemployed or on a low income. They are of all ages (16 years upwards) and include parents with young children, young adults and older people. As a community interest company, CCS makes ends meet by having volunteer counsellors, charging a small fee for counselling sessions (but does not turn those away who cannot

afford to pay) and benefits from donations from organisations such as Kent Minds, Kent Community Foundation and Charter 600 Charity. The counsellors also undertake their own fundraising activities such as an annual bike ride.

Volunteer Car Scheme Have you heard about Whitstable’s Volunteer Car Scheme?

The car scheme is run entirely by volunteers, and operates from Whitstable Volunteer centre. Anyone who lives in the Whitstable area and struggles to use public transport is eligible for the scheme. Many people rely on the service to get to hospital appointments, but it can also be an invaluable means of keeping everyday life going. The scheme ensures people can continue going to social clubs, meetings, and even the hairdressers! We are always looking to recruit new drivers to help make sure we can meet the needs of Whitstable residents. If you’re wondering whether this volunteer role might be for you, have a read of our interview with John, a long-standing driver with the scheme: How long have you been a volunteer for? 16 years and 10 months! What made you interested in volunteering? What prompted me was my late parents – my father had to give up driving and they were able to use a similar service. That was what first put the idea

into my head, and when I took early retirement, a colleague told me about the Whitstable scheme. Having been in the fortunate position of not having to go to a local doctor for 13 years, I hadn’t seen the notices at the local surgery. I signed up initially in Feb 99, and have been here ever since! What’s the best thing about your role? I’m on my own at home, but when I’m volunteering, I meet people. A client recently said something which made me realise I get a lot of satisfaction from being able to help other people. I’ve got a car; I’m able to take them wherever they need to go! Sometimes we wait whilst clients attend appointments, and I bring a book or the paper to read. What’s the most surprising thing about your role? I’ve learnt a lot about a variety of medical conditions during my time in this role! You can really get to know some clients, so discretion is very important. Would you recommend this role to other people who are thinking of volunteering? Oh yes, over the years I’ve made some very good friends. One couple invited me to their 50th wedding anniversary celebration!
