he refractive error known as “astigmatism” (a distortion in the curve in the cornea that can blur near and distance vision) is commonly displayed in children during the first year of life. After that, as the eye matures and infants begin using their eyes more, the astigmatism abates. However, this is not always necessarily the case. While previous studies have indicated that astigmatism is very common among Native Americans, recent research reveals that the refractive error is also relatively widespread among Hispanic preschoolers. While no one can say for sure why the incidence of astigmatism varies along ethnic lines, the study underscores the value of having eye evaluations be a part of infants’ and preschoolers’ routine wellness visits. P.S. It is often difficult to assess preschoolers’ vision because they are typically unable to verbalize their vision difficulties and have no other experience to compare with it.
