t is vitally important that everyone have regular dilated eye exams, which allow the eye doctor to see clearly into the back of the eyes and check for potential problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. There are three conditions (glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration) that present no initial symptoms. If they are allowed to progress without diagnosis and treatment, those afflicted may suffer irreversible vision loss, making it imperative that dilated eye exams be scheduled regularly. The painless exam involves simply putting drops into the eyes that dilate the pupils enough for the ophthalmologist to look at the backs of the eyes. It may be a little time-consuming, but it is well worth it. P.S. The American Academy of Ophthalmologists recommends that everyone 65 years and older have a dilated eye exam every one to two years or as directed by a doctor.

ccording to research involving 75-year-olds, those who later lived and thrived into their 90s seem to share a number of common behaviors. For one thing, they did not smoke. For another, they remained physically active and involved themselves in a number of leisure activities. Beyond that, they also remained connected socially.
