ry eye syndrome, which is a common ocular problem that affects 10 to 15 percent of all adults, may be caused by decreased tear production, poor tear film quality, or excessive tear evaporation. While symptoms can remain mild for some dry-eye sufferers, the chronic condition poses the potential for disabling irritation and sight-threatening corneal complications for those with severe cases. In such severe cases, punctal plugs are a treatment option. As their name indicates, these tiny silicone plugs are inserted into the lower and/or upper punctum, which are tiny ducts on the inside portion of each eyelid that collect tears produced by the lacrimal glands. By blocking tear drainage, punctal plugs preserve precious tear film.

P.S. Temporary (dissolvable) punctal plugs may be used to treat fleeting dry eye arising from laser eye surgery.
