EYELID INFECTIONS
A
“sty” is an infection of the eyelid that forms at the base of a hair follicle due to an infected sebaceous (oil-producing) gland. This painful red bump resembling a boil or pimple may otherwise appear on the eyelid’s inner surface due to an infected Meibomian gland (which produces an oily layer in tears that prevents evaporation). Treatment usually consists of the application of warm, wet compresses three to four times a day. In some cases, however, an internal sty may develop into a chalazion, a painless lump that results from the body’s inflammatory response to oily secretions on the clogged Meibomian gland. If a chalazion gets big enough to be annoying or affect vision, it may be surgically removed. P.S. If a sty does not clear up after two days of treatment with a warm washcloth, contact the ophthalmologist.
