takes a lot of planning to create the perfect wedding, and choosing the venue is the first, and many would agree, most important step. The venue often sets the tone for the entire wedding, whether it be rustic or contemporary, formal or casual. And size - as well as budget - does matter when it comes to selecting the ideal setting to say “I do.” In the local area, there is a wide variety of wedding venues available to couples. At the Original Bridal Expo to be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel in Marlborough, hotels, conference centers, inns, and country clubs are among the facilities represented. “Weddings are getting smaller in general,” explained Bob Chevalier, producer of the Wedding Expo. “The average wedding is now around 150 people; it used to be 250 to 300.” Because of this, there are many more options available for couples who may not need as much space. The 200-year-old Grafton Inn is perfect for the new trend of smaller, more intimate weddings. The Colonial-style inn can host 25 to 120 people, with a cozy atmosphere and fireplaces.

hile diamonds will always be the gem most associated with weddings, jewelers are expanding their choices and creating custom-made rings to satisfy engaged couples’ desire to express individuality. “Custom, custom, custom,” said Karl Sachs of Sachs Jewelers in Shrewsbury. “That is the trend.” Engagement rings and wedding bands now come in a multitude of designs, metals, and even gems. “White gold is still king,” ex-
plained Deb Bordeaux of Designer Jewelers of Westborough, “but yellow gold seems to be making a comeback. Also, we are seeing a movement toward rose or pink gold… It has a red-yellow hue that accentuates the diamond.” There are even combinations of gold tones. “We sometimes see white gold with rose accents,” Sachs said, adding his store also carries a line of rings by Scottish designer Custom rings page 2

Marlborough noted that there are many options to find a ring that fits your personality or taste. Joy-Den has a large selection in platinum, white or yellow gold, or palladium, a white metal in the platinum family that is hypoallergenic and priced less than gold. And for gems, although Sachs says “there is no substitute for diamonds,” more brides-to-be are choosing sapphires in their engagement rings. “Sapphires have long been used for engagement rings, but are now more popular with the royal wedding,” Bordeaux said, adding that they are usually less expensive as well. “Sapphire is popular,” Jennifer Briggs Jenkins, of J. Briggs & Co. in Northborough, agreed, “but not all stones will stand up to daily wear. Nothing holds up like a diamond.” J. “introduce some interesting twists so that customers have a unique and timeless ring that won’t go out of style,” she said, and often mixes antique and contemporary elements. After the ring is designed, a mold is made so the customer can try it on and make sure it’s exactly what they want, Goldberg said. “Customers come in with pictures,” added Sachs. “They like elements of one and elements of another, so we can create a unique piece for them.” Solitaire diamonds are no
longer the fashion. “Halo is the new traditional,” Sachs said. Halo rings have a large center stone encircled by smaller stones, making it seem as if the center stone has a “halo.” Brides also have the option of stackable eternity bands a n d single, double-, and triple-halo styles. “We are also seeing the floral halo becoming popular,” Bordeaux added, which is a center stone surrounded by smaller stones to create a flower shape. Women aren’t the only ones with choices when it comes to wedding jewelry. Men’s wedding bands now come in a wide range of styles and prices. “Wedding bands in titanium and tungsten are lightweight for men who are not used to wearing jewelry, and are durable and inexpensive,” Yesue said. Stephanie G is introducing a new type of ring in 14 K white
gold over sterling silver. “They are still much less expensive than gold,” she said. Still, for those who want affordable and durable rings, the alternative metals are a good option. At Sachs, they give grooms the best of both worlds: with the purchase of a precious-metal ring of $2,000 or more, they receive an alternative-metal ring free for daily wear. While brides want something new and unique, they often want to incorporate a gem or setting that has been handed down through generations. Recycling jewelry “incorporates the sentimental value with the desire to make the ring their own,” explained Goldberg, and can also help keep costs down. Designer Jewelers also specializes in resetting or redesigning rings in its in-house repair center. “Many people have diamonds that have been passed down through generations and find comfort in knowing their precious heirlooms never leave our store,” Bordeaux said.

“It’s like having a wedding in your own home,” owner John Pandey said. The Harding Allen Estate in Barre is a magnificent neoclassical, three-story mansion and gardens offering a romantic and one-of-a-kind backdrop for an intimate wedding, although its Fountain View Ballroom can host as many as 500 guests. Built
in the 1920s, the estate only hosts one wedding at a time to make a couples’ wedding truly personal. With most New England weddings taking place in late spring or fall, many couples want to have either part or all of their wedding outdoors. The ideal venue has a combination, so that, weather-permitting, wedding pictures can feature lush greenery or fall foliage.

The Marlborough Country Club is one such venue, with stunning views of the golf course from its recently renovated banquet room that can host up to 180 guests. They also offer indoor or outdoor ceremonies. “A lot of people don’t realize that we are open to the public; you don’t have to be a member,” General Manager Jeff Lawson emphasized. More and more venues are also catering to another trend: offering various packages for convenience and to help bridesand grooms-to-be to stay on budget. The Harding Allen Estate comes complete with its own in-house chef and planning coordinator, a floral shop, an in-house bakery, a tabletop design, linen, and lighting rental company, a DJ, and professional saxophonist. “We have followed the market and responded to the needs of our couples by creating our own wedding emporium,”said Grace Rossi Gugliotti, owner, wedding planner, and executive chef of the Harding Allen Estate. At The Manor Restaurant in West Boylston, they offer “a one-stop shop” for weddings, explained Sales Director Andrea Rotolo. “Couples like the idea of writing one check.” The facility provides various packages, including as much or as little as the couple wants - photographer, cake, DJ, and flowers - in addition to the inhouse catering. “It’s definitely less expensive to choose a package instead of a la carte.” The hotel also offers more incentives in the off-season, November to April, with packages to attract couples. At the Beechwood Hotel in Worcester, “we are happy to customize our packages to

create a personalized wedding reception,” said Sales and Marketing Manager Yvonne Caole. “Additions and omissions can be made to accommodate couples needs and budget.” The Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Westborough also hosts a variety of wedding packages for their facility which can host parties of up to 500 people. The hotel can provide as little as the room and table settings to as much as the catering, cake, flower centerpieces, open bar, and wine service. One unique feature of the Doubletree is that they allow outside catering, which is excellent for those who want a specific type of food at their wedding. It also allows for flexibility in terms of budget and dietary restrictions.
To streamline further, a lot of couples are opting for an on-site ceremony so guests do not have to spend time traveling from the ceremony to the reception. The Beechwood Hotel has an onsite chapel to accommodate this latest trend. The chapel “allows for ceremonies up to 150 and we host ceremony rehearsals for anyone that has booked an onsite wedding,” Caole said. Rotolo added that The Manor, which regularly hosts onsite wedding ceremonies, will host its first ceremony outdoors in its gazebo in June. With so many venue choices in the local area, with accommodations to fit any size or type of affair, it is becoming easier for brides and grooms to find the perfect spot for their special day.

Looking your best on your wedding day By Sue Wambolt Contributing Writer

or a bride-to-be, the weeks and months following the proposal and up until the wedding day can be a whirlwind. There are so many details to attend to - the dress, the invitations, the flowers, the photographer, the reception venue, the menu, the guest list and the seating chart, to name just a few. Huge amounts of time, energy and money are invested to ensure that the big day is unforgettable. For the blushing bride-to-be, though, nothing is quite as important as looking her best on her big day. It is after all, the day that she has dreamed about since she was a little girl. For the busy bride, investing in her physical well-being throughout the wedding planning process is a great way to release stress and anxiety while boosting her mood - after all, when you feel good, you look good. Whether taking an aerobics class, going on a hike or a bike ride or hitting the gym, the benefits of exercise
cise will improve self-esteem and body image, allowing brides to walk down the aisle with style, confidence and grace. Along with exercising, it is important to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins will help brides look and feel their best. Drinking plenty of water is important for every process in your body, especially your skin. For the blushing bride, nothing is quite as important Keeping well as looking her best on her big day. hydrated helps shed toxins and will help to give brides that will help give brides youthful, healthy, happy glow. Consider glowing skin. Additionally, attending yoga or mindfulness fi lling up on water will keep meditation classes; both are you from craving unhealthy known strategies for increassnacks and consuming uning well- being, calmness and wanted calories. So drink up confidence. Any form of exer-
and remember, beauty starts on the inside. Once the bride has her wedding planning well under control and she has been exercising and eating well, it is time for some pampering - perhaps a facial, manicure, massage and/ or eyebrow waxing. All will relax her mind and body and refresh her soul. A manicure the day before her wedding is a must as her hands will be the focus of attention when showing off that shiny new wedding ring in all the photographs! It has been said that ‘you’re never fully dressed without a smile’ and nothing could be truer than on your wedding day. One of the easiest ways for a bride to enhance her appearance is by improving her smile. After all, there will be more pictures taken of her on her wedding day than at any other day of her life. So share the moment, embrace the joy, and let your smile shine! “As a cosmetic dentist,” said Dr. Todd Pizzi of Modern Dentistry in Shrewsbury, “I have requests f rom brides that vary from tooth whit-

ening, bonding, veneers, lip enhancement and Botox. All of these treatments can make an immediate impact on your appearance. It is amazing how a person’s face lights up when they’re confident in their smile. The key is making the appearance look as natural as possible. Everyone is unique, so if you are looking to improve your smile, have a consultation with a cosmetic dentist to see what can be done.” Looking great on your wedding day means being radiant, relaxed and ready to start a brand new life with the man of your dreams. Your skin, nails, smile and the swoon worthy dress (and feeling fit and fabulous in it) are all part of becoming the confident (beautiful, blushing) bride you want to be on the big day. Remember, all eyes will be on you as you take that once-ina-lifetime walk down the aisle and countless pictures will be taken that will remain part of your life forever. even be purchased from thrift stores and tag sales. When glass is used, though, adding “vase fillers” such as fruit, birch tree limbs, feathers, shells, pinecones or even live gold fish transforms the ordinary into extraordinary. For the bride on a tight budget, choosing to use seasonal flowers in wedding arrangements can help incorporate the natural beauty of the season while saving money at the same time. There is a benefit in going local as well. When couples choose local florists, there is no “middle man” - orders are filled to exactly what you pay. Here, the person who takes your order fills your order. Going local means supporting the local economy, which benefits everyone in the community. Additionally, local flowers are naturally fresher and varieties can be offered that are hard to find otherwise. At Mugford’s Flower Shoppe in Westborough Floral page 7

or the bride-to-be, choosing flowers for her big day is one of the most important elements to creating the perfect wedding. Not only do flowers provide color and ambience, but they symbolize life, growth, and rebirth. From the flowers at the ceremony to the groomsmen’s boutonnieres to the centerpieces at the reception and of course, the ultimate, the bride’s bouquet, flowers are a focal point of any wedding. From simple and sweet to bold and beautiful, flowers set the tone for the day. While wedding dress fashions for 2014 point towards romantic lace and chiffon, floral selections echo the same sentiment with lush, soft, enchanting bouquets and centerpieces filling florist shops. With its alluring harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid (replacing Emerald)
has been named the Pantone color of the year and is expected to make a big showing at 2014 weddings. Floral carnations, roses, heather, mini asters and orchid all come in rich purple, or Radiant Orchid, and are expected to be used in abundance by floral designers. Keeping to the sof t, romantic trend, flower garlands and unusual greens such as vines, geranium leaves and maidenhair fern are sure to grace altars, aisles, tabletops and doorways in 2014. Greenery with tulle is simple and romantic as well. The use of foliage adds texture and is comparatively less expensive than most floral blooms. From simple baskets, to extravagant bouquets, florists are breaking away from traditional flower vessels. Urns, wooden boxes, tea cups, and vintage vases are replacing traditional glass vases to hold centerpiece arrangements. Attractive but inexpensive vessels can

where many flowers are grown on location, floral designers have control over the quality of the flowers they can offer to their customers. “We offer farm to table flowers. During the spring, summer and fall, our property boasts more than an acre of home grown flowers offering brides a large selection of local, in-season flowers for their weddings,” said floral designer Gwen Forrester. “We produce our own compost on site and grow as eco-friendly as possible.” While brick and mortar florist shops are known to have on-site floral designers, there are other - often less expensive - options as well. At the Wegmans store in Northborough, professional designers are on hand to help brides design floral arrangements to create the atmosphere they envision. “ Wegmans F lorist of Northborough has the freshest flowers and plants with
consistent low pricing. Every day you get our best,” Brittany Brown, the store’s floral department manager said. For a great many brides, the choice of flowers takes second place only to the choice of wedding dress. From the traditional and simple to the artful and trendy, the choice of flowers is an important one. In the end, the florist selected to transform your wedding will play a major role in creating a beautiful visual backdrop for your big day whether a casual gathering or a formal black tie gala - by bringing to life floral designs that execute your vision. Myriad of options for wedding fashions By Sue Wambolt Contributing Writer

ith the 2014 wedding season officially underway, future brides begin the daunting task of planning their big day. The to-do list is seemingly endless: working out a budget, picking out invitations, choosing a reception venue, settling on a color scheme, composing a guest list, and researching photographers, bands, florists, and caterers. Anxious and excited brides give every detail - from the most minute to the grandiose-assiduous attention. And, while the process can be tedious and time consuming, nothing can quite compare to the excitement of searching for the perfect wedding dress. The dress is, after all, what little girls’ dreams are made of. From romantic skirted ballgowns to strapless A-line princess dresses, and glamorous body-hugging fishtails to elegant, ethereal lace numbers with embroidered bodices, there is no shortage of options. To help make the selection a little easier, bridal runway fashions show-
case trends in bridal fashions. In 2014, the trend is towards romance - dresses with delicate lace sleeves and eye-catching embellishments. Sophisticated yet flirty gowns covered in beading, embroidery and tulle with plunging backlines and contemporary trains are filling bridal shop racks. Shown with them in some cases are lux layering with sheer tulle wraps and short fur jackets. Also trending this year is gold accenting. Jackets and wraps made of sheer netting with gold appliques or made from gold lace itself are popular choices. For the bride who is looking for trendy yet off- price bridal clothing, The Treasure Chest Company in Northborough offers bridal gowns for 50 to 80 percent off retail. “The majority of our designer label wedding dresses can be purchased for $95 to $100,” said boutique owner Lisa Oates. “We are like a Filene’s basement for bridal fashions.” Embroidered veils are a romantic and trendy way to accent any wedding gown. They offer and embellishment opportunities, subtle or dramatic,
often embroidered with ornate stitching in floral or greenery patterns. Locally, Bridal Veils by Tricia in Shrewsbury offers brides custom, hand-made veils. Owner Patricia Porcaro, a designer and seamstress, works out of her home to create one-of-a-kind, heirloom veils. “From vintage to trendy, simple to ornate, I work with brides to create custom veils,” said Porcaro. “If a bride has a vision, I can bring it to life.” Peggy’s Place in Grafton is the place to go for unique vintagestyle dresses, accessories, and jewelry. “We have the perfect dresses for older brides and second weddings,” explained owner Peggy Marshall.“Also, for mothers and grandmothers of the bride.” Priced between $150 and $375, the dresses and suits are also very affordable. “Many brides don’t want to spend $1,000 on a dress,”Marshall said. Peggy’s Place also carries one-of-a-kind vintage earrings, classic pearl jewelry, and hats for any member of the bridal party. And as every woman knows, Wedding fashions page 9

every outfit begins with a good foundation. Peggy’s Place carries Spanx so everything stays in place from the ceremony to the reception. For the groom, 2014 trends in color vary from blues to grays in addition to the never outdated traditional black. The classic bow tie is making a comeback for the men as a popular choice over the tie. Recent trends project a move towards formality and the return of the black tie. Gray tuxedos and a very tailored Slim Fit Tuxedo are popular choices for 2014 spring and summer weddings, said Dana Luzzo of Bonardi’s Formalwear. The bow, which completes the elegance of the tuxedo, she said, is becoming more trendy as well. “At Bonardi’s Formalwear, with locations in Worcester, Framingham, Milford, Auburn and Sturbridge, designers such as Joseph Abboud, Calvin Klein, Perry Ellis and the men’s Allure Collection help make wedding attire selections easy, “ Luzzo offered. “We can accommodate any out-of-state groomsmen

OUR TRADITION
here is so much to think about when planning a wedding, it’s easy to overlook special touches that can made your special day more memorable. Individuality is the buzzword for weddings these days; couples want their wedding to stand out from the rest. “Custom is huge right now,” said Shelby O’Connell of So Chic Events, a Mendon-based wedding design business. “Couples absolutely want their day to be their day, not a cookie-cutter wedding.” So Chic offers almost anything a bride and groom desire and all custom designed to fit the wedding theme: invitations, centerpieces, décor, linens, favors, and colorcoordinated candy buffets to name just a few. O’Connell has designed lobster bibs, drink cozies, and other unique favors for guests. “I love a new challenge,” she said. So Chic Events, and its sister company SKO Designs, may be reached at 508-4782309 or visit sochicbridalexpo. com. The Art and Frame Emporium offers a range of services “before, during, and after a wedding,” owner Ed Turner said. The shop provides custom framing for invitations, engagement and wedding photos, as well as for gifts for family, friends, or the wedding party. “Another thing we do a lot of is sign-in mats with a photo of the couple,” Turner noted. “Everyone signs it, and
the couple can frame it as a keepsake.” With a staff of artists and freelancers, another service the emporium can provide is custom artwork - for invitations or portraits. They can even create caricatures of the bride and groom. Turner recalls a recent work created for a wedding invitation. “The bride and groom are represented as zombies and it reads ‘undying love,’” he said. The Art and Frame Emporium is located at 18 Lyman St., Suite 101, in Westborough. For more information, call 508-366-5650 or visit artandframeemporium.com. A special gift always helps the wedding party to remember a couple’s special day. Heart and Stone Jewelry has handmade personalized charms and accessories that are a perfect way to say “thank you.” Designer Julie Booras strives to combine the best of inspired designs with handcrafted precious metals and beautiful natural stones to craft heirloom pieces. The charms can be engraved with a name, date, or personal sentiment so each is one-ofa-kind. In December, one of Heart and Stone’s creations – an engraved silver keychain - was featured in People magazine as a gift for men. After being an online-only
business, Booras opened her studio in 2009 and began offering make-yourown jewelry classes and parties. “The parties are perfect for a bridal party of six to eight people,” Booras said. “They can bring food and beverages and make a special keepsake while they are having fun and relaxing.” Heart and Stone is located at 269 W. Main St., in Northborough. For more information, call 508-466-8333 or visit www.heartandstonejewelry.com. Gerardo’s European Baker y is known for their beautifully decorated wedding cakes, which are also delicious and reasonably priced. Owner Gerardo Sarli personally meets with brides and grooms to help them design a truly custom-made cake that is a reflection of the couple and their wedding. Not only that, Sarli will bake them a replica of the top layer of the cake for their first anniversary. “They just have to call us a few days ahead a time,” Sarli said. “We’ll pull their file and make it for them fresh. It’s our way of saying thank you for their business and also happy anniversary!” Gerardo’s European Bakery is located at 232 Turnpike Road (Route 9) in Westborough. Call 508-366-1845 or visit gerardositalianbakery.com. If you are planning any preor post-wedding gatherings, Wegmans can provide a wide range of catering options. Wedding day must-haves versus maybes Focus on must-haves when budgeting for your perfect day
W
The thoughtful, sentimental details are the most significant elements of any wedding, such as the ones used for Courtney (Wambolt) and Forrest Musselman’s wedding.
PHOTO/SUE WAMBOLT
eddings are expensive. For the most part, there’s no getting around that. But sometimes, especially under pressure or stress, it’s easy to forget that at the end of the day everyone in attendance is there to celebrate the union of a loving couple. Those moments are more meaningful than the color of the bouquets, the way the napkins are folded and the presents left on the guest tables that most likely will be forgotten anyway. Of course, to the bride and groom who are planning their special day, these details are extremely important and contribute to the memories. But as you plan for your wedding, remember not to lose sight of what the day is actually about. That being said, how do you determine what you can and can’t leave out of the budget? Start by sitting with your partner, eyes closed. Then describe your perfect wedding
to him or her. Which details stand out to you? Make sure one of you is writing down what you say. Then open your eyes and observe your list. Next, draw two columns,
one for “must-haves” and one for “maybes.” Some people must have purple lilies everywhere because they signify something special to the twosome. Others couldn’t care
less about flowers, but the music has to be epic. Once you begin to paint the picture of how your wedding day looks to you, you will be able to step back and
see where you can cut costs. For example, if you have a playlist of your favorite tunes, perhaps you could cut costs on a live band or fancy DJ. Must-haves page 13

Wedding day must-haves versus maybes Must-haves Continued from page 12

You might have your heart set on a very pricey location for your reception, but feel “meh” about expensive bridesmaid dresses. Areas in which you shouldn’t try to bargain are with the photographers, the videographers, and the food and alcohol suppliers. The photographs and video are extremely important because the day is going to fly by for you, and having everything documented will not only provide years of happy memories for you, but also for future generations. Don’t try to cut corners here. Go with someone reputable whose work you respect and value so that you can relax and enjoy the moments as they happen. Regarding food and alcohol, you want your guests to have enough to eat to fill them up, and you want the food to be quality. If providing highend plates feels out of reach, there are creative ways to get around that without lowering

expectations for quality. You could rent a food truck with excellent reviews, have a buffet or plan an earlier wedding and reception with an abundance of appetizers. Avoid hiring a catering company by which you aren’t completely blown away. And of course, unless you’re throwing a dry wedding reception, make sure there is plenty of alcohol (while offering drivers or taxi vouchers for those who may need them.) Once you are able to step back from the emotions associated with planning the “perfect” day, you can take comfort in knowing that for the most part people will only remember what they have in front of them, and not what they don’t. The thoughtful, sentimental details are the most significant elements of any wedding. Have fun, and find ways to tie in your personalities as often as possible. Create an environment that allows people to cut loose. The more fun you have the more fun they will have in return. After all, it is a celebration!

Far from being too feminine, the pairing of mint and pink creates an expectation of a very colorful celebration. And it’s also a trend to color-match personal wedding websites to the colors of the invitations; a great many brides and grooms are customizing their wedding Pretty in pink page 15

he candy colors of pink and mint will be a top duo for weddings in spring and summer of 2014, with pink a perennial favorite of brides and mint sticking around for another season of growing popularity. The soft shades of pink and mint evoke a sense of sweetness, and the two shades complement each other extremely well when used in any number of wedding designs and elements. Top wedding blog “Style Me Pretty” recently announced the 10 wedding color palettes it loves most for this year. Cool mint with gray came in at number three, with number four pink and mint. Pink and mint are not an exclusive duo, after all; they do love to blend with cream, gray, and/ or silver in this season’s sweet color motifs, so do keep these additional shades in mind, as advised by the editors of another top site, Wedding Chicks. Here are some ways that pink and mint are showing up, softening and sweetening

websites in the pink and mint color motif. One design idea is to choose an all-mint background and place just a few pink, cream and gray owers around each page’s design. • Create bouquets in pink and mint. The pink may be your primary shade, with tiny touches of mint and cream or white owers throughout. In bouquets, it’s always best to use one color for the majority of the design and the other colors as accents. • Design an aisle runner in pink and mint. Again, pick one color for the overall shade and use the other color in a lighter or darker shade for an accent for your names, wedding date or simply a oral or
patterned motif. Julie Goldman of The Original Runner Co. suggests then turning your aisle runner into a keepsake by framing the portion of it that bears your personalized message design. “And they lived happily ever afterâ€? as the framed portion of your aisle runner will surely become a treasured home decor item. • Create escort or guest place cards. Alternate pink and mint cards for a pretty arrangement of those “where are we sitting?â€? cards that guests look through to ďŹ nd their names. • Swag your setting. Fabrics draped in a dramatic fashion add a glam touch to your wedding venue, so create your colorful fabric drapings in pink and mint or save the
fabric swag concept as “stage curtainsâ€? around your candy buet. • Set your tables. Choose one color, pink or mint, as your tablecloth shade, and then add a table runner in the other shade along the center of your table to pair the two shades in perfect proportion. • Create a photo booth backdrop. In wide pink and mint-colored stripes, a photo booth backdrop is a big design trend for weddings. Done well, with wide stripes instead of narrow ones, it doesn’t create a welcome-to-the-circus look. Rather, it’s a sophisticated wedding. • Give out favors. Tulle baggies of pink and mint candies or frosted cookies are always a favorite for guests.
