Area communities Titan selected as new Algonquin mascot lift mask mandates By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor REGION - A number of area communities voted to lift their COVID-19 mask mandates last week, taking action as coronavirus case rates dip following last month’s record-breaking case surge. Marlborough and Grafton took the region’s first votes at Board of Health meetings on Feb. 7. Northborough and Southborough then convened on Feb. 8 following Marlborough’s vote to rescind. Some of Northborough’s Board of Health members cited the decisions of various communities as they continued discussion. “I know, when we passed it, things were really out of control,” Glenn French said, also mentioning COVID-19 case rates. “[Now], I think things are going in the right direction.” Westborough capped the week on Feb. 9 with its own Board of Health vote. As Marlborough, Grafton, Northborough, Southborough and Westborough have all now voted to rescind their mask mandates, an order remained unchanged in Shrewsbury as of press time. The Shrewsbury Board of Health was due to reconsider its mask mandate on Tuesday afternoon. See expanded coverage beginning on page 3.

NORTHBOROUGH - Say hello to the Titans — Algonquin Regional High School’s (ARHS) new mascot. The high school announced the new mascot on Feb. 11, concluding a process that began over a year ago. “I saw the unity that the school had around the Tomahawk, but I think this is going to be a new era for our sports teams, and it’s going to bring an even higher level of unity than we saw before,” senior Andrew Roberts said in the video announcing the new mascot. The Titans were one of five final options for the ARHS students to pick from. Those other options included the Eagles, Falcons, Nor’Easters and Thunder. Tomahawk retired The mascot was revealed on Friday in a video shown to ARHS students, who voted on the mascot earlier this month. School officials then shared the news with the community at large. The Regional School Committee voted last April to retire ARHS’ former mascot, the Tomahawk, following the recommendation of the Mascot Study Group. That study group was formed following a petition asking to change both the high school’s name and mascot. Mascot | 24
