Letters to the Editor City should refuse requested changes to allow for proposed McGee development To the Editor: I ask that the City of Marlborough refuse to allow special permitting, leeway, allowances or zoning changes for a proposed development at the McGee Veterinary Farm at 339 Boston Post Road. The plan includes a 4-story, 4-bldg 188 multi-generational apartment unit, with several parking lots. That area of the city is becoming a blighted area, with the cube storage building, the Shell station, and the over-crowded parking lot from Garden Remedies. Adding a towering complex with several large areas of concrete further degrades the look and feel of our city as you leave the serene landscape of Sudbury.

Additionally, that many units could bring hundreds of schoolaged children to further burden our school system. As the new

elementary school goes live, will we need to immediately begin the search for another? Will the MSBA be willing to help again so quickly, or will it be solely up to taxpayers? What about the strain on fire, police and DPW personnel and equipment? The additional traffic on Route 20 will turn what is a painful commute into a parking lot, forcing most to deviate to back roads to and from Waltham and Boston.

There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of value-added to the city with loosening the floodgates and granting a plethora of special permits.

And speaking of floodgates, much of that property is currently wetlands, a brook and a pond. To build that design, they would have to be filled and relocated. If I were an abutter, I would be very concerned about the new higher water table in my own basement. The City Engineer recommended extensive studies and tests, but to what end? All the city has to do is say no. There is nothing that makes the city responsible for helping a seller max out, but there is a lot that the city should consider in protecting our green space, our legacy, and our current residents from undue burdens on all of

our infrastructure.

Vote for Maselli and Milton in Northborough To the Editor: The Northborough town election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30. Residents need to send a message that a new economic direction, fairer tax system and expenditure reductions are wanted. Continued growth is not progress when at all cost. Much needed is a no increase in annual cost budget, a decrease in expenditures for equipment and limits on the size and number of homes. Seniors and those others on fixed or low incomes need a reduced property tax burden. Please vote to re-elect Millie Milton to the Planning Board and Lisa Maselli as selectman. Both ladies will bring an infusion of new

ideas and energy so drastically desired. They are not afraid to ask questions, consider alternate ways of doing things and shaking up the status quo. We need representation that will challenge the ever increasing high cost of living in our town.

$15.4M Shrewsbury Route 20 project approved by MassDOT SHREWSBURY - The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) recently approved a $15.4 million project to address safety concerns on the Route 20 corridor in Shrewsbury and decreased the speed limit on a 3-mile portion of Route 20 based on a completed speed limit study.

The Shrewsbury Route 20 Corridor Study was completed in January 2020 and aims to address concerns of town officials and the community relative to safety and congestion along the corridor. The study was undertaken at the request of State Representative Hannah Kane (R-Shrewsbury) and town officials and provides a preferred roadway improvement concept that will meet current and future demands on the 5.1-mile stretch of roadway over the next 20 years.

The plan takes into account expected new development projects as the area transitions to a more mixed-use environment while also improving intersection and corridor safety.

“I am grateful that MassDOT has prioritized and approved this critically-needed project and thankful for the work of Shrewsbury town officials in partnering to advocate for improvements to the Route 20 corridor. Completing the Corridor Study and implementing the recommendations has been and will continue to be a priority for me,” remarked Kane.

The $15.4 million project includes improvements along the eastern section of Route 20, from the Valente Drive intersection to the South Street intersection. The approval of this project means MassDOT can now hire a consultant to undertake the design of the roadway improvements, using the recommendations made in the Route 20 Master Plan as a baseline. The proposed improvements include pavement rehabilitation and box widening, reconstruction of the existing signal at South Street, construction of a new signal at Valente Drive with construction of an access road from Walnut Street, construction of a shared-use path on both sides of Route 20, and other related work. Funding for the project is yet to be identified.

Volunteer collects smart devices for seniors needing telehealth access

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - Her college classrooms are closed, but Northborough’s Xiao Zheng remains hard at work this month. She’s collecting phones and tablets and donating them to local senior citizens who need access to increasingly prevalent “telehealth” medicine.

“It is worthwhile to spend energy to help this population specifically,” she explained.

Zheng is part of a rapidly growing nonprofit network simply titled, TeleHealth Access for Seniors. The Floridabased group is the brainchild of two of Zheng’s Yale classmates and has rapidly grown since Yale, like most colleges, shut down in mid-March due to the coronavirus.

Currently, TeleHealth Access is operating in 20 states across the country, connecting local volunteers like Zheng with senior living facilities or hospitals that say they need more devices to help connect

Visits increased by a factor of 12 from mid-March to early April, according to an April 28 statement from the White House Council of Economic Advisors.

Many of those new telehealth appointments have come for senior citizens who often have pre-existing conditions, but who cannot shoulder the infection risk of visiting a traditional doctor’s office in this climate.

As research shows seniors often do not have up-to-date tech or do not know how to use the tech they do have, Zheng said her work is crucial.

“The mission is so closely connected with the immediate crisis at hand,” she explained.

“Hospitals are overcrowded as it is, so having telehealth as an avenue for appointments makes it easier for the patients and the doctors.”

Westborough’s Master Plan Committee gets extension

By Jennifer L. Grybowski Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - The Board of Selectmen (BOS) voted May 26 to give the Westborough Master Plan Advisory Committee some extra time in coming up with their draft.

Master Plan Chair Lester Hensley told the BOS that the committee has continued to meet each week with VBH, the consulting firm, but that there had been a concern raised regarding the ability of department heads’ ability to be properly engaged in the process while they are so consumed with dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.

“We are missing out on their subject matter expertise and the benefit of their engagement,” Hensley said. “We don’t want to short the master plan process.”

He said the subcommittees suggested delaying the process by 60 days and give department heads time to clear some space in their schedules to engage in the master plan work.

Selectman Allen Edinberg agreed.

“Getting it right is more important than getting it right now,” he said.

He asked if the public comment period could be

The City Council unanimously approved Mayor Arthur Vigeant’s recommendation to reappoint Breen to a second five-year term that officially starts July 1 and ends in June 2025.

Breen said he has two families. He raised his four kids with his wife, the “love of his life” in Salem, N.H. and started as a firefighter in Salem in 1986. He rose through the ranks serving for 10 years as Fire Chief of that town.

He said that members of the Salem and Marlborough fire departments are “some of the finest people I’ve ever met in my life and extremely giving people that truly care about their communities.”

The city of Marlborough had gone through several leadership changes in the Fire Department and hired an independent consulting company to conduct an organization assessment of the department including strengths, weaknesses, necessary improvements, and goals. The report was completed in 2014.

Shrewsbury Board of Health ready to enforce regulations as economy re-opens

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – Governor Charlie Baker recently announced a four-phase approach to opening the state.

On May 18, Phase I went into effect. Assuming positive health data, Phase I should last roughly three weeks.

Locally, the Shrewsbury Board of Health is paying attention to compliance regulations and workplace safety standards, including operations, staffing, social distancing, and hygiene and disinfecting protocols, as more sectors of the economy begin to open.

“All of the direction for this is coming from the state,” stated Board Chair Stephen Vigeant. “All of the local boards of health have the authority to enforce the requirements that go along with the re-openings.”

issue appropriate penalties from verbal warnings to fines for noncompliance. If a business refuses to comply, they will have to shut down.

Vigeant explained that the role of the Board of Health is to educate people and that the board does not want to be in the position of having to fine or shut down a business.

Complaints will be investigated by a health agent from Shrewsbury or from the Worcester Division of Public Health and, if an infraction is found, the business will be issued a verbal warning.

If a second warning were required it would be in written form and then, if a third is necessary, the business would be fined.

“The direction given to us from the state is that we can fine up to a maximum of $300. They suggested starting at $100 then going to $200 then $300,” Vigeant noted.

After a third fine, the Board of Health has the ability to force the business to close by obtaining a court order.

Vigeant said that they have not had to do this yet but that it was very early in the reopening stage.

However, during the stayat-home orders there were a couple of instances where non-essential businesses were open against state mandates. “Cease and desist” letters signed by Vigeant were sent to the offending parties.

As businesses begin to reopen, town buildings are also slated to open June 1, though according to Vigeant, “the Board of Health has not been involved in the strategy for opening town buildings.”

Under current guidelines, only 25 percent capacity occupancy is allowed per room in each building.

There is a thief that has robbed me.

He travels from continent to continent, missing not a single town.

Swooping down, stealing laughter and lives, like a seagull snatching your sandwich.

His name is COVID…COVID-19.

The only way to avoid him is to ISOLATE on my own island, wearing a mask, while keeping a wary eye on the horizon watching for the rising waves of COVID. Still, he will find the weakness in our defense, allowing him to continue his world tour, leaving no stone unturned, Robbing us of socializing, sports, shopping and school.

No school: my dream come true!

But wait! No friends! No social activities at all!

Soon I find myself yearning, just to hear the squeak of tennis shoes, on the polished gym floor, for normal to be, once again.

COVID is as sneaky as a fox, for he lurks on groceries, doorknobs, and more.

He can inhabit you, without you realizing he is there!

This is what makes him most dangerous of all.

I, for one, hate the uncertainty of it all!

When will I get to see my friends, once more?

Shall a cure ever be found?

Will this be over, come fall?

These questions bounce around my mind, the answers unknown.

A life, my life, once full of fun and joy, is now a dark tunnel with no end in sight!

All it took was one careless mistake, to birth this thief, and only one it took to spread it.

To spread it to my town, Westborough.

I blinked, and my former life was gone, in a flash!

Each gathering – web or in-person – averages about 15 to 20 participants. Rogers was determined to continue gatherings remotely and increase frequency during the coronavirus outbreak. The first weekly web gathering was March 20.

“We’re all being called upon to literally isolate from one another,” she noted. “We’re all struggling with the differ-

about the Red Tent movement, she became a member and ultimately lay leader of UCMH. She was particularly attracted to its Spiritual Growth and Community Center, an outreach program open to the community at large.

Supported by the outreach program, Rogers got help from other women to construct the tent that has been used for gatherings at UCMH since 2011. For the web gatherings, she creates a facsimile in lieu of the tent in her home.

“When people call in, they see the red space behind me,” she explained. “I do what I can

“The book inspired ALisa as a model of women sharing elements of life together in the community,” Rogers explained. “It occurred to me how much of a game changer it would have been in my life if I had that inclusive space with women of all backgrounds – all ages, faiths, heritages, sexual orientations and socioeconomic levels.”

HUDSON – Nancy Rogers experienced a notably productive three-year period starting in 2009. She began attending women empowerment events, became aware of the Red Tent movement, became a member of the Unitarian Church of Marlborough and Hudson (UCMH), and founded Hudson MA Red Tent in 2011.

Since then, she has facilitated Women’s Red Tent gatherings every few months at UCMH, 80 Main St. in Hudson.

Adapting to social distancing measures during the coronavirus outbreak, the gatherings are now known as Women’s Web Tents and scheduled weekly online via Zoom.

“We’re going to get through this crisis together online,” Rogers shared. “A lot of us are feeling very jangled, but knowing that we have a place to connect helps us to feel not so alone. Doing it weekly serves as a check-in.”

While Rogers currently facilitates web gatherings, she’s considering the future possibility to offer both online and in-person gatherings when the pandemic restrictions are lifted.

“The Red Tent always lives in my heart,” she said. “It’s an event as much as a resource.

It’s a force unto itself that I can put into the world.”

Making a Move During Uncertain Times

M

oving is hard. It is physically taxing and, depending on how deep your roots go, it can be mentally and emotionally exhausting. Now you have come to the realization that its finally time to make the move, and a pandemic hits! Project Toy Box - United Way of Tri-County brings fun to kids during crisis REGION - The United Way of Tri-County (UWTC) recently announced that they have donated thousands of brandnew toys and games to underprivileged children in MetroWest/495 corridor communities through a program they have named Project Toy Box. While parents and caregivers across the commonwealth learned last month that their kids will not be returning to school this school year, the United Way of Tri-County decided they needed to give kids something to look forward to, according to a press release from the organization.

UWTC partnered with 14 local social service agencies and nonprofits across the region to get brand new toys and games into the hands of kids ages 5 to 12.

“We are always here to provide critical support to families in need, but we also want to give children something to smile about during an extremely stressful time,” said Paul Mina, President & CEO at the United Way of Tri-County.

Staff spent hours sorting items by age range and preparing for agency distribution on May 5 and again on May 7. The Framingham warehouse space on Blandin Ave. used to store

In an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and adhere to the statewide ban on large gatherings, the United Way of Tri-County asked that agencies arrive at their warehouse to collect the games and toys, and urged social distancing and the use of masks. In turn, agencies are distributing the donated items to qualifying families following the same safety guidelines.

ingham. She said that it was the patriarch of a swan family and his mate was nearby with their babies.

Zorge and a group of others went out to assess the situation. The rescue took a couple of days. The first day, they used paddle boats and nets but they didn’t have a good opportunity to capture the swan.

“I left that day feeling defeated,” she recalled. “We came up with another game plan.

Myself and my friend Amanda [Szucsik], who is a veterinarian, went out and with the help of someone who had been watching the bird... I had stopped at a local farm stand and got a bunch of treats and sat on the dock and slowly waited. Mom came with all her babies and ate. Slowly they left and then the dad approached. I had to reach out with my arm to grab it and pull it on shore. It was just a waiting game.”

it didn’t require any treatment and it was quickly reunited with its family.

“I specialize in hawks and owls but could not let this swan suffer,” she said. “I want to really stress to anglers to please pick up their gear to prevent these injuries from happening.”

Zorge grew up in Shrewsbury and is a graduate of Shrewsbury High School and

Becker College in Worcester, where she earned a degree in veterinary science. She briefly served in the military.

“I hold a federal and state permit to help wildlife in Massachusetts,” she noted. “The federal permit allows me to help native birds…I’ve been permitted for eight years now for the state and almost five for the federal government.”

She said that this spring has been crazy. She has received about 50 phone calls in the past month alone.

Much of her rescuing is on her own time and dime. She is fundraising to help her expand her operations and she wishes to acquire new enclosures that are specialized for the birds of prey in her care.

“My goal is $11,000 and I am currently a bit over $9,000,” she stated.

“My daughter Harper is also very involved with our rehabilitation and rescue efforts. She has been on many missions with me.”

The funds “will definitely increase my capacity of me helping the animals that are in need in our area…Having this enclosure will triple the amount, which would be amazing,” Zorge said.

By Kathryn Severance Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH - Sawyer Brook Distinctive Fabrics of Marlborough opened in 1974 as a woman-owned company providing seamstresses with high-quality fashion fabrics through catalogue mail orders. While ownership has since changed, the company, now owned and operated by retired tech executive, Faten Ramadan, remains a respected woman-owned fabric business, serving customers on the national and international level through their cuttingedge online website.

In early March, before CDC officials had communicated the importance of facial masks, a neighbor working for a local hospital shared facial protection needs of their fellow healthcare workers with Faten, who quickly designed and created 100 facial masks for employees at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester.

Soon after, a friend at a local senior housing complex approached her and Faten created 150 additional masks, which she used to collect financial donations to support pandemic relief efforts. When an article in The Community Advocate spread the word about her efforts, the community responded with an outpouring of mask orders and monetary donations. The donations, which total a whopping $2,200 were recently distributed to the Worcester County Food Bank and another organization that provides food to families in need.

“I worked with my neighbor, one of the hospital’s anesthesiologists, to design a pattern for maximizing comfort and facial protection. I then chose materials, cut out the design, and used my sewing machine to develop each one. I did this in my spare time, while still running my business and fulfilling customer orders. I had no idea then, but this was just the beginning,” she said.

Faten, who is both the company’s owner and sole employee, also pivoted her sales model to make it more accessible for others to purchase materials to create their own masks for an affordable price. She cre-

Peter LaPine - I am running for a seat on the Board of Selectmen because I am passionate about this town! I believe we must carefully balance the wishes of our townspeople with the affordability of proposed projects.

Braccio - As a current member of the Board I understand the workings of town government, have established working relationships with town departments as well as our citizen volunteers. processes are followed when dealing with town matters and that has been paramount in all the decisions and discussions I’ve been involved with.

What committees would you most enjoy working with if you were selected for this position and why?

Braccio - In addition to being a current member of the Board of Selectmen, I also sit on six other Committees (listed above) and continue to actively volunteer in other capacities within the town.

And I have enjoyed working on those committees and would like to continue if re-elected.

I have also enjoyed working with our seniors and being a volunteer on the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). We are all blessed to live in an amazing town with incredible spirit and sense of community; I will continue to work to support our community and strive to make our town better.

LaPine- As a potential member of the BOS, I feel I would most enjoy working with the Economic Development Committee (EDC). Why are businesses leaving the town year after year? A drive down Route 9 reveals many vacant office buildings on both

sides of the road. Why can’t Southborough seem to attract and keep businesses in order to offset some of the real estate tax burden for the homeowners of Southborough? A single tax rate helps, however, by itself, it does not seem to be enough.

A “community of one” approach and collaboration among voters and town government would serve to make Southborough an attractive business environment and ease the residential tax burden.

Malinowski - If elected, I would look to build upon the relationship between Advisory and the Board of Selectmen to be more forward thinking as we continue to navigate unchartered waters financially.

Getting through this is going to require better collaboration and out of the box thinking.

One of my main goals is to make links between various boards and committees. I do look forward to listening to others ideas.

What is the primary problem do you feel the town is facing and what do you think should be done to rectify it?

Braccio - It is imperative in the next three years that we continue to work hard to ad-

dress the budget constraints and be fiscally responsible to the taxpayers. We must work together to find new avenues of revenue and to cut our expenditures; we have to institute tough new standards as our financial outlook approaches a critical nature.

I will continue my work to establish better lines of communication between town residents and the Board of Selectmen, as well as improving inter-committee and board communications. Important decisions must be made with input and knowledge of ALL relevant town entities and residents.

LaPine - We are witnessing an economic situation unprecedented in the lifetimes of most residents. With over 25 million Americans unemployed and businesses shuttered and on government subsidies for an indeterminate period, we must plan today for the impact this is going to have on our town in the very near future and for years to come.

Without income, how will families pay their property taxes – let alone feed themselves?

The same issue impacts closed businesses. How will town services be affected by the loss of these revenue streams?

ough from one of his mentors, who was a consultant and involved in the assessment report process. After leading the Salem Fire Department for nearly a decade, Breen said he felt he had done all he could do and achieved his goals and that he wanted to move to a department where he could have an impact. His mentor explained the similarities in the two communities so Breen was intrigued as he reviewed the final “200-plus” page assessment report on the Marlborough Department and thought it would be a good fit for him.

“The community has to select the right chief, but the chief has to apply to the right community,” he stressed.

He said he went through the lengthy application and review process and felt he had the support of the mayor, the City Council and community

leaders he had met with and accepted the offer to take the job in 2015.

He acknowledged the Marlborough Fire Department’s accomplishments since he took the position five years ago including, reorganizing staff roles and responsibilities, increasing staffing levels, acquiring two new engines, a new boat, new support vehicles, protective gear and necessary station improvements.

As for this term, Breen said his top two goals are to have a west-side fire station/public safety facility up and running (that includes moving the city’s dispatch center currently located at the Police Station), increased staffing per shift and quicker call response times.

Because there currently is no fire station west of Route 495 and the commercial and residential population growth has exploded, it is impossible,

at times, to respond to calls in the time often required.

“I will consider it a failure on my part if we’re not able to do this (a new station up and running during this term),” Breen said. He went through the process of building a new fire station while in Salem and knows what it takes, he said.

On the staffing side, Breen said they are in the process of filling three entry-level firefighter positions. He put together a panel made of fire department members, union members and community leaders. The panel received 57 applications and have passed 21 applicants to him for to interview for the three spots.

Breen’s passion is palpable.

He is a member of the Rotary and a true part of the community.

They are distributing the treat bags filled with snacks and activities to local retirement homes and hospitals. They recently distributed 36 bags to the Beaumont Nursing Home in Northborough and plan to donate another 100 to UMass Hospital in Worcester.

“I can say on behalf of all of us that this little opportunity to be proactive has really been making me happy during this crisis,” Moholkar noted. “It has given me a reason to leave the house and I do feel a sense of pride by giving back and helping others while doing something purposeful during this pandemic.”

Patricia Riley, teacher and advisor at Algonquin, donated a lot of items that were in the school store. This contribution has helped to stretch the boys’ budget tremendously.

“Our goal is to donate 1,000 bags by the end of June. I am very confident that we will meet and perhaps even exceed that goal,” said Sundar.

Although the boys could not have their scheduled tennis season, the project has been a way for the tennis team members to come together, given them a sense of community and purpose.

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – When Shrewsbury High School (SHS) sophomores Aiyi Wang and Morgan Koester found that they had time on their hands after the initial school closure due to the coronavirus pandemic, they teamed up for a good cause.

“With so many families stocking up on food, I couldn’t help but think about how difficult it must be for those who were already low on food, to get enough of it to support their families,” Morgan said.

The pair emailed some teachers to suggest holding a food drive. At about the same time, Sue Dileo, a retired Oak Middle School counselor, contacted SHS Principal Todd Bazydlo to see if there were any students available who may be interested in helping her with a food drive. Together, Dileo and the girls decided that the food collected would go to the food pantry at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Worcester.

Morgan added. “By doing this project, I have learned that things won’t always go as planned though if you take the time to brainstorm how to get around those obstacles, there will be a solution. I also learned that it doesn’t take a lot of time to make a difference and

learning experience for both the girls and one that they would definitely do again.

“Helping other people is something I’ve always loved to do,” Aiyi said. “One thing I learned is that the force of two people is not enough to make a huge change to the world as there are still millions of people who are in poverty and hunger, and it is somehow sad that we can only help so many people even when we tried our best.”

Forbearance News: Borrowers can now defer payments until the end of their loan

ave a forbearance agreement with Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac? You can breathe a big sigh of relief.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has announced that homeowners in COVID-19 related forbearance programs with Fannie and Freddie can defer their missed payments until “the home is sold, refinanced or at maturity,” they said in a news release.

Up to 12 months of deferred payments can be added to the end of the loan term.

“The deferred sums to be repaid include principal, interest and escrow advances,” said National Mortgage News.

And now for the bad news

There is one piece of notso-good news related to forbearance.

“U.S. homeowners hurt by coronavirus were told they could delay their mortgage payments without facing consequences. Now, some are learning they’re at risk of being shut out of the housing market,” said Yahoo Finance.

The stimulus bill contained language that was meant to protect borrowers from credit issues related to their forbearance agreement.

“But the law didn’t address long-standing policies that restrict consumers from getting new loans for a year after their forbearances end,” they said. “For instance, Fannie Mae and Freddie M a c … w o n’t b u y s u c h mortgages. Some borrowers who took advantage of the relief lawmakers provided are now being told that they will have to wait before they can refinance or obtain a fresh mortgage to purchase a home. That ’s true even for those who ultimately make their payments on time, as the forbearances are still being noted on some consumers’ credit reports.”

Residents’ generosity helps to restock Westborough Food Pantry Nearly 7,000 lbs. of food and items donated during town-wide drive

By Bonnie Adams Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH - As Donna Kittredge looked over the hundreds of food and personal care items spread on the lawn of the Westborough Food Pantry’s lawn thanks to a town-wide food drive held on the morning of May 30, she

was thrilled she said, but not surprised.

“Westborough is the best community,” Kittredge, who shares the duties of pantry president with her husband, Phil. “They are always are so very generous.”

The food drive was an initiative of In your Shoes, a nonprofit giving circle dedicated to

giving “time, talents, and monetary resources to provide assistance and financial support to those in need.” The group organized the May 30 food drive by asking residents to sign up to participate and then leaving items in their driveway which were then picked up by a team of volunteers who brought them to the pantry.

By Jeff Slovin Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - The Algonquin Regional High School seniors paraded through campus this evening to say “Thank You” and “Goodbye” to the teachers and staff of Algonquin, as well as the other Northborough and Southborough schools.

Algonquin will be distributing diplomas individually to students and their families on Sunday, June 7, in lieu of a formal graduation ceremony.

At day’s end, 6,716 pounds of food and supplies had been donated, which was very much need by the pantry, Donna Kittredge said.

For the past two months, the Kittredges, along with the pantry’s volunteers, have grappled at how best to serve residents in need of food.

Since the pandemic struck in March, the pantry has been operating under a different model. Located in the Forbes Community House (9 East Main St.), it was closed for pickups and donations due to health concerns. Patrons were still serviced by volunteers who dropped off items and gift cards to local grocery stores.

But not being open for donations meant the shelves were quite bare.

And with so many people either finding themselves unemployed or unable to work for health reasons during the pandemic, there was an increasing number of residents facing food insecurity. During “normal” times, the pantry serves approximately 130 families. Over the past two months, that number has climbed to approximately 160 families.

Joining in as a pickup volunteer the morning of the drive was State Sen. Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton). It was not the first time the senator had assisted with the pantry’s operations, Phil Kittredge noted.

Thanks to a $50,000 grant that Eldridge helped to secure, the

pantry will finally now have air conditioning.

“This is such a wonderful thing,” Kittredge said to Eldridge. “Sometimes it gets really hot in some of the rooms, up to the high 90s. And many of our volunteers are elderly – that was not good for them. So we are so appreciative.”

“I was happy to help,” Eldridge replied, “and happy to be here this morning. People were so generous! “ Kittredge also praised In Your Shoe’s member Terry Gavin, who helped to organize the drive.

“She and the other volunteers here this morning really deserve all the credit in the world,” he said. “We could not have done this without them.”

The pantry will be opening June 4 and 18 for pre-boxed grocery pick up for present and new clients, from 9-11:30 a.m. and then hopefully back to its regular schedule in July.

Additionally, the Westborough Appalachia Service Project will be running another food drive on Saturday, June 27. They will be using a similar format where residents may register via email at ahead of time at Westboroughfooddrive@gmail.com and volunteers will come and pick up the donations. Traditional staples such as mac and cheese, pasta sauce, rice, beans and paper products are always desired but items such as cookies and crackers are also welcome donations.

Family and friends honored and remembered Jack’s life by gathering for calling hours May 29 at the Chiampa Funeral Home of Shrewsbury, with a Mass of Christian burial held May 30 at St. Mary’s Church of Shrewsbury and burial at Mountain View Cemetery.

John M. Schwartz, 78 SHREWSBURY – John M. Schwartz, 78, of Shrewsbury and formerly of Chicago, Ill., passed away peacefully April 29, 2020 after a period of declining health.

John is survived by his fiancée and best friend, Lois Benotti of Shrewsbury; his children, Erica Fayrie of Brook-

field, Vt., Heidi Schwartz and her husband Colin Duclos of Brookfield, Vt., and Nathaniel Schwartz of Mexico City, Mexico; Lois’ children, Jay Benotti of Worcester and Kristin Benotti-Chastain and her husband Allan Chastain of Florida; his grandchildren, Adeline and Tobias Malone and Silas and Asa Duclos, all of Brookfield, Vt.; and five special nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sister, Judy (Schwartz) Cunningham.

A graveside service was privately for John’s family, with a memorial Mass to be celebrated at a later date. The Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Edgar Van Buren, 104 MARLBOROUGH - Edgar Van Buren, 104, died peacefully May 18, 2020 at Carlyle House in Framingham after a monthlong battle with COVID-19. He was married to Caroline (Barber) Van Buren, who passed away Feb. 9, 1985. He was also predeceased by his son, Peter, in 1995 and his daughter, Margaret in 2013.

He is survived by his sons, Stephen and his wife Ann of Bolton, William and his wife Julie of Venice, Fla., and Robert and his wife Helen of Federal Way, Wash. He has eight grandchildren, Scott and his wife Suzanne, Mark and his wife Tammy, Kristin Kelleher and her husband Patrick, Gina Brown and her husband Kenneth, David and his fiancé Gina, Catherine Lankford and her husband Richard, Nicholas, and Richard and his wife Heather. He also has 13 greatgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers D. Nicholas in 1950, John Austin in 2011 and Peter A. in 2017, and by his sister Sr. Alma Marie, O.P. in 2015.

Pauline E. MacDougall, 89 GRAFTON - Pauline E. (Dube) Adams MacDougall passed

away May 19, 2020 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester following an illness. Her husband, Donald MacDougall, passed away in 2012.

She is survived by her children, Gloria Faucher and her husband Gordon, Dennis Adams and his wife Lois, John Adams, and Richard Adams and his wife Christine; 11 grandchildren, who will all miss their beloved “Memere,” Sean Farrell, James Adams, Laurie Cascione, Keith Farrell, Jeffrey Faucher, Julie Stevens, Erin Sherman, Megan Williams and Zachary, Timothy and Ryan Adams; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Wilfred G. Dube and Beatrice O. (Lagace), Pauline was also predeceased by her daughter, Claire A. Rissotti; her brother Robert Dube; and sisters Lorraine Rice and Gloria Malouin.

Funeral services and burial will be private. Roney Funeral Home of North Grafton are assisting with arrangements.

John J. Orciuch, 74 WAREHAM - John J. Orciuch, 74, of Wareham, formerly of Auburn and Northborough, passed away May 19, 2020, at Tremont Health Care in Wareham after a long period of declining health.

He leaves his daughters, Julie Robillard and her husband John of Norton, Elizabeth LaClair of Douglas, Melanie Yerardi and her husband Michael of Auburn, and Tara Robinson and her husband Gene of Framingham; nine grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. His son, Christopher Orciuch, passed away in 2016.

Services will be private.

Josephine A. Dufault, 91 MARLBOROUGH - Josephine (Josie) A. Dufault (Fiorentino), 91, of Marlborough, died May 24, 2020 at her home, surrounded by her girls. She was the daughter of Frank and Mary (DeFazio) Fiorentino.

She was married to the love of her life, Bobby Dufault, for 64 beautiful years. Bob died in 2019.

Josie is survived by her children, Michelle Turner and her

fiancé Tom Paulini of Plymouth, Linda Freitas and husband Michael of Westborough, Nancy Casaceli and husband Michael of Marlborough, and Debra Dufault and husband Dave McIntire of Southborough. She was predeceased by her oldest daughter, Denise Mitchell. She leaves her grandchildren, Bryan and wife Kate, Kyle and wife Stefanie, Lindsay and husband Andrew, Jaclyn, Anna, Chandler and Luke, and six great-grandchildren, Mason, Wyatt, Sonsie, Morgan, Oscar and Natalie, and is also survived by her brother-inlaw, Charlie Zambito of Needham, and several nieces and nephews.

Shaun Kinsman, 36 WORCESTER Shaun Michael Kinsman, 36, of Worcester, formerly of Hudson and Natick, passed away unexpectedly at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, on May 24, 2020.

Shaun is survived by his three sons, Damian Kinsman, Jaiden Kinsman and Jordan Kinsman; his mother, Nelia F. (Homen) Kinsman of Worcester; his father, Scott E. Kinsman and his wife Bonnie of Berlin; his sisters, Christine F. Smith and Lynette I. Wheeler; and many close aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as nephews and nieces.
