By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer REGION - Wesley Chiu took the microphone at the end of a recent Black Lives Matter protest in Grafton.

Staring down a crowd of 100 supporters, he spoke with tears in his eyes.

“I’m a person of color,” he said, “and I’ve experienced racism more than I’d like to admit.”

Then he broke down, echoing hard, heavy sobs into the mic he still held.

Scenes like that have played out with unprecedented frequency in the wave of protests following the horrific death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police on Memorial Day. In a movement unlike any in recent memory, large crowds are finally listening as young people of color lead difficult conversations about racism in suburbia.

Harrity retires from Avidia Bank

REGION - Throughout history, masks have played an important part in many iconic movies and television shows, such as The Phantom of the Opera, the Lone Ranger and Batman. Now, they may even play a more heroic role – helping to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Some, of course, feel the requirement to wear a mask impedes on their civil rights. But as we watch what is happening in our country in places where masks are not required – and the virus is surging – we are thankful that the BakerPolito Adminstration is relying on the scientific evidence that wearing a mask does help to stop the virus from spreading.

HUDSON - Richard Harrity, who has a 39 year history with Avidia Bank, recently announced his retirement at the end of June.

Harrity started as a corporator to the former Hudson Savings Bank, now Avidia Bank, in 1981. In 1988, Harrity became a trustee of the bank and eventually served as Chair for both the Loan Committee and the Personnel Committee.

In 1997, Harrity left a successful business career and his position as Richard Harrity trustee to become Branch Manager and Business Development Officer of Hudson Savings Bank’s only satellite branch location at the time, Hudson South, located on Washington Street. In 1998, he moved into the Collections Manager position. In 2003, he was promoted to Officer of the Bank, in 2008 to Assistant Vice President, and in 2016 to Vice President.

In addition to his service to the bank over the years, one cannot talk about Harrity’s career without mentioning his meaningful contribution to the Hudson community. Since 1979 Harrity has been an active member and former President of the Hudson Rotary Club, Chair of the Hudson Food Pantry since 1993, he has served as the Hudson Town Moderator since 1985, and President of the Hudson Historical Society since 2016.

SHREWSBURY – Some Shrewsbury residents have recently noticed an increase in dirty and brown water because a primary drinking water well pump is currently not working.

“Unfortunately a week or so ago our Sewall Number 4 Well seized up and went offline and we are in the process of having that well extracted from the count, rebuilt and repaired so we can get it back into operation,” explained Town Manager Kevin Mizikar town at the June 23 Board of Selectmen’s meeting.

He noted that the well is one of the town’s highestproducing and its output is hard to replicate in other wells. Further, they are limited by the amount of water that they can withdraw from the Home Farm Well Field.

As such, the town has experienced several days of tight limitations on water. On average, they extract about 3.6 million gallons of water per day.

“Given the heat and extra water usage over the last week we are averaging nearly five million gallons a day,” he noted. “When we take a high-producing well out of commission during that time it really strains the system.”

The Water and Sewer Department is working with the well pump vendor to determine the schedule for when the Sewall Well pump will be repaired and returned to service.

In the meantime, Mizikar urged residents to limit any unnecessary outdoor water usage.

The town website offers the following outdoor water use guidelines and restrictions: Nonessential outdoor watering hours are restricted to before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. only on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Residents with even numbered addresses are limited to nonessential outdoor water use on Wednesdays and Saturdays; residents with odd numbered addresses are limited to Thursdays and Sundays.

Nonessential outdoor water uses subject to mandatory restrictions include the use of automatic lawn sprinkling and irrigation systems; washing of vehicles - except in a commercial car wash or as necessary for operator safety; washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks, except as necessary to apply surface treatments such as paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement or cement.

“This is a serious matter especially if we have a situation where there is a house fire or a brush fire that would break out in the very dry conditions,” Mizikar stated.

Last, he apologized to the community for any adverse water quality issues that residents may have experienced.

Grafton man memorializes COVID-19 deaths with massive flag display Flag display | from page 1

harder, he’s adorned his front lawn with more than 8,000 American flags to commemorate each life lost to coronavirus in Massachusetts.

It’s a way to make physical the often-intangible loss the region has suffered.

“When I start feeling a little bit down, I take a walk into the front yard and look at the flags,” he said. “That puts it in perspective.”

Perspective is important to Labee. The owner of All Phase Glass, a property maintenance company in town, he’s seen his client pool dry up in recent months.

He also had to rework wedding plans, downsizing from a sprawling event with 225 guests, to an intimate 25 person gathering earlier this month in his yard.

“At the end of the day, everybody was safe,” he says, though. “Everybody is healthy.”

Thus, Labee says, he does not want stories and social media posts about his display to focus on him or his experience.

He’s simply saddened by the events of the past three months, and heartbroken by the scale of all this loss.

“We just try to help out,” he said.

Labee planted his first flag in March, within a week of the first Massachusetts deaths due to COVID-19. At the time, he said, he expected to plant a few hundred flags over the spring and summer.

Now, though, he’s already assembled a tightly packed field of 8,000.

“It just kept growing and growing and growing,” he said.

Diane Libby, a Grafton resident who visited the display June 26, echoed the sense of grim awe in the face of it all.

“When you look at the number of flags here and you realize that there’s one unhappy person for each of these, [you think] ‘That’s why we wear the masks and stay six feet apart,’” she said.

Creating such an image has come with a cost, though.

Labee estimates that he’s spent close to $15,000 and countless hours on the flag displays so far.

Maintenance and assembly is, after all, both expensive and labor intensive.

Each flag rests in special wooden mounts Labee as-

sembles ahead of time. Beyond that, he’s laid stones and landscaped around the areas the flags occupy while building a large sign in front of his lawn explaining the meaning of the entire display.

He says he and his five kids are out working on the flags almost every day, adding new ones and maintaining existing clusters.

Inside, Labee says, he also

just received a new shipment of 1,500 more flags in grim anticipation of more deaths to come.

“I can’t stop now,” he said.

Between 50 and 100 cars drive down Labee’s back road each day, some coming from as far as Pennsylvania to see the display that’s been widely shared in some social media circles.

Labee and his family often

interact with these passers-by.

Other times, they say, they’re happily surprised as they simply notice people stopped along the road taking photos.

“That’s what it’s out there for,” Labee said. “It’s for people to come and see it.”

Labee eyes the flags every day and says he’s regularly taken aback by the gravity of this moment. He’s never seen “anything like this.”

Along the same lines, he wishes communities would come together amid such crisis to lean on one another and recognize the thousands of individual lives already cut short.

He hopes his flags can help that process for some.

“We all need to step back and say, ‘thank Jesus that we’re here,’” he said. “Let’s work our differences out and move on together.”

Bailey. “This current crisis has made this challenging.”

To meet the challenge, the hospital has made major procedural changes.

“We practice a low-contact protocol,” Bailey explained.

“Only our patients are permitted into the hospital. Pet owners stay in their vehicles in the parking lot or go home if their pet is scheduled for a surgical drop-off.”

Technicians take the history over the phone and maintain social distancing as they bring

the patient into the building, The hospital also has protocols in place to reduce the risk of infection for Bailey’s “amazing support staff.” They wear masks and gloves when bringing a patient into the clinic.

“We use our own leashes” Bailey said, “and avoid contact with animal clothing and harnesses belonging to the client.”

Once the animal is inside, “we care for our clients’ furry family member to the best of our abilities,” said Bailey. “We wash our hands thoroughly

before and after seeing a patient.”

After examination, the veterinarian contacts the pet owner by phone to discuss findings, diagnosis and any recommendations. The client then authorizes testing or treatment, as may be needed.

To stay safe, the hospital has

prioritized urgent care, rabies vaccination and keeping puppies and kittens up to date on required core vaccinations; however, it is now bringing back annual and wellness appointments and other elective procedures.

“I would encourage owners to follow social distancing for pets outside their home, such as keeping their dogs six feet from other animals and people and on a non-retractable leash while on walks. Keep cats indoors,” Bailey recommended.

“There are on-going studies regarding animal to animal transmission and once this information is finalized I am sure it will be publicized.”

Bailey began her career aspirations at the tender age of 5, “after the death of a beloved pet.” Despite years of experience as a general practitioner and as an emergency veterinarian, Bailey said, “Nothing prepared me for this crisis.”

She praised the “patience, kindness, and cooperation” of Hudson Animal Hospital staff and “the community of caring families that we serve.”

Sheriff’s Annual Senior Picnic cancelled REGION – It is always one of the most anticipated, well-attended events of the summer season but this year Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis’‘Annual Senior Picnic will not take place. The event is cancelled, of course, like so many others, due to COVID-19 restrictions and public health concerns.

“This is very disappointing news for us all but we must prioritize everyone’s safety first,” Evangelidis said.

Grafton officials discover 200+ uncounted ballots from June 23 elections Close margin on budget override question could prompt total recount in September’s state primary elections and in the presidential general elections in November.

Before those events even arrive, though, there may still be more developments in this municipal election.

Speaking as poll workers

were counting votes June 2, Select Board Member Peter Carlson told the Community Advocate that he was aware of petitions on both sides of the override argument that could have demanded a recount if results didn’t go in petitioners’ favor.

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer GRAFTON - Results from the June 23 town election briefly came under question this month after officials discovered more than 200 completed absentee ballots had not been counted.

Though they ultimately did not change any election results, the ballots put a spotlight back on Grafton’s budget override ballot question more than a week after initial polling results showed the measure passing by a slim 98 vote margin.

“We recognize that the integrity of our election is of the utmost importance,” a town statement on the issue read.

According to town officials, Assistant Town Clerk Paul Cook discovered the misplaced ballots while doing other work in his office’s vault on June 30. On further investigation, he and Town Clerk Kandy Lavallee determined the ballots in question were all absentee ballots that should have been delivered on election day to Precinct 2 to be counted there.

Town legal staff immediately reached out to state election officials who, in turn, advised Grafton to seek a court order allowing them to reopen the already certified June 23 election results.

When that court order came July 1, officials convened a crew of poll workers to open the ballots in public the next morning as cameras live streamed the process via town public access TV.

“For maximum transparency...The public is welcome to attend,” the town’s press release added in preparation for that counting event.

As election workers hunched over piles of paper July 2, a small gathering of onlookers discussed the Proposition 2-1/2 measure, which town leaders had said that they needed to implement to avoid massive layoffs and programming cuts.

At the same time, however, it’s a tax hit many locals are not happy about.

Due to the controversy, the ballot question set to settle the debate passed by just 98 votes according to the original count, June 23.

When 202 new ballots then emerged, this month, many were quick to point out that an overwhelming opposition could swing things. In reality, the ballots actually expanded the margin of “Yes” votes to 99.

As many express their frustrations over the ballot mishap online, Grafton officials understand the impact that this had had on public perception of their elections.

Thus, they say they’re implementing new standard operating procedures to avoid subsequent issues and already plan to bring in independent investigators to assess how this mistake happened.

“I take full responsibility [for this],” Lavallee said. “The upcoming investigation will help us to see what we need to do going forward.”

From here, election staff will have a chance to implement their new plans soon,

Now that Proposition 2 -1/2 has, indeed, passed, it is unclear if override opponents plan to follow through with such a recount request.

“Every vote counts,” Carlson said. “We need people to come out and let us know how they feel.”

Library to temporarily move to Walker Building

MARLBOROUGH – In anticipation of its renovation and expansion project, the Marlborough Public Library will be temporarily moving to the city’s Walker Building at 255 Main St. The library’s current location on West Main Street had been closed to the public since midMarch (except for pick-ups) due to the coronavirus.

The library will undergo a $23.8 million renovation and expansion of the West Main Street library funded in part by a

$10.1 million grant from the state Board of Library Commissioners and donations to the Marlborough Public Library Foundation capital campaign which hopes to raise $2 million.

R. Drayton Fair of LLB Architects has been selected to design the new addition. Plans calls for the historic Carnegie Building to stay intact and the total square footage will increase by approximately 16,000 square feet.

Fair’s design shows a three-

level building; two levels plus a below ground space. The first floor will add a café area with vending machines acting as a spot for people to gather to eat though will not be a commercial café. On the first floor there will be a public elevator inside the entrance, the café, circulation, staff rooms, a reference desk, a local Marlborough history room, a quiet study area and restrooms. There will be tutoring rooms varying in size and able to serve two to 20 patrons.

The second floor will include three areas each dedicated to Pre-School, Children and Young Adults. The addition of a Children’s Programming room, according to Fair, can seat up to 200 or can be partitioned off depending on the program.

Glass walls will partition off the Pre-School area for security and safety reasons.

The current plan calls for the construction to be completed in the summer of 2022.

Buddhist Temple offers calm from present storm

By Brett Peruzzi Contributing Writer GRAFTON - On a quiet hillside in the woods off Route 140 in Grafton, a Buddhist temple is doing its part to stay connected to its followers and spread its message of calm and compassion in a world roiled by the coronavirus pandemic.

Its weekly insight meditation group now convenes on Zoom, as does its biweekly class that teaches the foundations of Buddhism to members’ children. The temple’s Facebook page posts words of wisdom and live streams the soothing chants of sutras, or scriptures, recited by its resident monks in Pali, the ancient language of the Buddha’s time.

The New England Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Center is a Theravada Buddhist temple, a spiritual tradition with roots in Southeast Asia, and is staffed by Sri Lankan monks, who are addressed with the honorific Bhante, which translates as “Reverend.” It was founded in 2004 and had sev-

eral locations in Boston’s western suburbs before relocating to Grafton in 2011. Head monk Debokkawe Pannasiri was ordained in Sri Lanka over 20 years ago and subsequently earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Buddhist philosophy.

“In the face of this pandemic, maintaining one’s mental wellbeing is critically important,” said Pannasiri. “Meditation helps us cultivate a high level of psychological resiliency and in times of adversity and stress it helps to maintain a peaceful and

restful state of mind.”

During such an existential crisis, the temple’s emphasis on mindfulness for ourselves and kindness toward others resonate all the more strongly for many people.

Richard Price is a Grafton resident who has meditated at the temple for many years.

“The TV and the internet offer wall-to-wall bad news, then we go to grocery stores and see half-empty shelves, which has

caused a sense of malaise for society,” he observed. “Meditation gives us an opportunity to put that chatter away for a while.”

Neela de Zoysa is a Sri Lankan-American from Sudbury who is also a long-time member of the temple. “The temple occupies a central role in the spiritual and social life of the Sri Lankan migrants …in the greater Boston area and across New England,” she explained.

Amid national protests, local people of color say ‘there’s still racism here’ Racism | from page 1

First and foremost, teens say that conversation involves confronting ugly truths.

“This is a small community and we know everybody but the police still treat us like outsiders,” said Yene Ouattara, a protester gathered alongside Chiu and others in Grafton, June 4. “That’s definitely not fair.”

Ouattara recounted cases where she said she and her brother, who is also Black, have both been suspiciously followed by police. That has made them uncomfortable.

Even more overtly, Ouattara said she’s heard racial slurs frequently in the community, a fact others speaking on June 4 further confirmed.

“There’s still racism here,” Souleymane Gaye said. “Everybody sees it. I know everybody sees it.”

As teens note, none of this is new. Police brutality and racial profiling have long plagued communities across the country.

that “breaking point” has had heartwarming results for others.

In Northborough, Lisa Cederberg, the white mother of a 14-year-old Black girl said she was protesting downtown on June 5. Her daughter had initially been shy, sitting away from the roadway and not engaging.

As dozens of cars passed, almost all of them honking in support, though, Cederberg’s daughter spoke up.

“Wow,” she said. “It’s good to be Black.”

“She felt a sense of pride,” Cederberg elaborated. “And that was such an amazing thing.”

Still, for all the success, pride and groundbreaking nature of these protests, the people of color making their voices heard say their towns still have challenges to confront.

“We should be feeling like a part of society,” Ouattara said.

“But we don’t.”

The Grafton protest she attended actually sparked a proverbial firestorm online during its planning phases as white community members questioned why such a protest was necessary, arguing the community does not face racism and insinuating that protesters were instigating unnecessary confrontation.

loaded” in a statement eventually reported to Grafton police.

Such social media arguments have surrounded almost every protest in the region so far as Facebook groups have often played host to tense confrontations between commenters and their detractors, who say statements are racist.

Then, there are the verbal attacks.

Several cars whizzing by protests in Grafton, Northborough and Marlborough this week have had people leaning out windows countering protesters by screaming “all lives matter.” Some shout expletives or raise the middle finger.

In Marlborough, Derrick DeSousa says a woman screamed at him, calling him

racial slurs and questioning why he was protesting June 1.

“This shouldn’t be a problem in today’s society,” he said. “This isn’t something we should be going through.”

Whether it’s Wesley Chiu, Yene Ouattara, Stanley Mumbai or any other members of the ever growing crowd of empowered Black, Latino and Asian young people now speaking out at protests across the region, the pained sobs and passionate calls to action are loud.

Chiu says he’s just glad communities are finally listening.

“We’re all here for the right reasons” he told another crowd in Grafton, three days after his first speech June 1. “We’re on the right track.”

However, despite the temple’s digital outreach, the pandemic is creating a problem for the monks in meeting their everyday needs and expenses.

“As a mendicant tradition, monks are dependent on food alms offered by the temple community, and this has been greatly reduced due to the current restrictions,” she noted. “No gatherings and few in-person visits have also resulted in a drastic reduction of donations.”

Regardless of the current financial challenges, de Zoysa did sound a note of hope, however, regarding the ability of the temple’s community to deal with the pandemic.

“Sickness, growing old, and

the frailty that comes with it, and ultimately, death, are normal facts of life in the Buddhist philosophy,” she noted, and are not taboo topics. “At a time such as this, when this reality is coming at us through a fire hose, it gives us pause to contemplate these realities of life and be more alert to living what time we have to the fullest.”

Added Pannasiri: “The many guided meditations and workshops conducted by the temple train the participants on how to be with yourself in silence. …The developed mind, on an even keel, is able withstand sudden changes and ups and downs. A calm and content mind can be joyful in the midst of turmoil.”

Tufts Community Grants Program recognizes four Grafton non-profits

By Cindy Zomar Contributing Writer GRAFTON - Thanks to the Tufts Community Grants Program, four local Grafton nonprofit organizations can breathe a little easier in these tough times.

Each year more than 30 applicants are awarded funding to continue their charitable work in the communities where Tufts has facilities - Boston, Grafton, Medford and Somerville. This year Apple Tree Arts, Community Harvest Program, the Grafton Senior Center and St. James Church each received grants of $1,000.

“Tufts University has always prided itself on civic engagement, community-based research and its lasting partnerships with local organizations in our host communities,” noted Rocco DiRico, director, government & community relations at Tufts University.

The Tufts Community Grants program is an important way in which we support the volunteer work of our students, faculty and staff in the communities that we call home. More

than 1,000 Tufts volunteers support local organizations.”

In addition, he said, Tufts Cummings School faculty members have developed STEM-related outreach programs that engage K-12 students in local communities with veterinary-based projects emphasizing science and engineering, including an annual program on veterinary medicine that is delivered to fifth-grade students at Grafton Elementary.

According to Jan Barlow, early childhood music director at Apple Tree Arts, their $1,000 grant will be used for their weekly music program at the Head Start program in Southbridge.

“Music is crucial to early development. This will fund some faculty and be used to buy new percussion instruments,” she explained.

“Nothing beats in-person interaction, but this is a nice option at least,” she said.

The Community Harvest Program will use their gift for soil fertility to improve nutrient management and increase output at their farms. Over the last five years, the Community Harvest Program has donated over one million pounds of food and utilized the services of over 8,000 volunteers annually.

The Grafton Senior Center has used past grants for medical rides for senior citizens.

“This time it will go directly to our fund to buy a new van,” explained Director Barbara Connelly. “Last year we provided over 8,000 rides to employment, banks, shopping and medical appointments. We are so thankful for all Tufts does to support the Grafton community.”

COMMUNITYSCHOOLS WCLT Scholarships 2020 awarded WESTBOROUGH - In 2020 the Westborough Community Land Trust (WCLT) awarded two $1,000 scholarships and two honorable mentions to graduating Westborough High School seniors. Awards were made on the basis of essays written for WCLT’s annual Earth Day Essay Contest, which was held in spite of coronavirus-related school closures this spring.

Audrey Didier won a scholarship for her essay describing how she came to know the Bowman Woods through the town’s nature camp and Girl Scout activities; connected with nature for comfort during stressful times; and now cares for the woods on every visit by carrying a trash bag and picking up litter. Her college plans include entering the honors program at Fairfield University and likely

majoring in either mathematics or economics.

Carolyn McDermott received a scholarship for her essay about walking with her dog on Charm Bracelet and Mill Pond trails, finding solace in the woods, and making nature her artistic muse for photographing small details in the natural world.

She plans to attend Fairfield University as a nursing major.

Additionally, Sarah Stroscio was recognized with an honorable mention for her essay about the problem of traffic in Westborough and its contribution to air pollution and greenhouse gases; her suggestion to create bike lanes on roads in town to make local bike travel safer and

more appealing; and her personal efforts to bike and walk more and to drive less. In the fall she will attend Assumption College and major in elementary education.

Andrew O’Keefe received an honorable mention for his essay describing how his Eagle Scout project of rehabilitating a trailhead at Gilmore Pond deepened his understanding of the importance of access to natural areas, especially for people with movement disabilities, and his ongoing work to keep trails and nature accessible to all. He plans to attend Quinnipiac University to study engineering.

“Almost all the essay writers mentioned the natural world as a respite from the stress of the coronavirus pandemic,” said Annie Reid of the WCLT Scholarship Committee. “The commit-

tee members were impressed by all the essays we received.

And, as always, we could see how families and the Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations provided many experiences that helped the students get to know

School Committee recognizes retiring faculty and staff

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - Barbara Malone, director of human resources, appeared before the School Committee June 10 to thank and recognize faculty and staff members of the Shrewsbury Public Schools for their service as they embark on retirement.

“Twenty-two faculty and staff are ending their educational careers with their closing of this chapter of unusual year for education. I feel like probably their last three months were the most challenging in their careers,” Malone said.

“They have certainly earned their well-deserved retirement. In combination, they have served the students of Shrewsbury for 415 years.”

Some of them were on hand via remote participation in what School Committee Chair Sandy Fryc called a sad but happy celebration.

“We have so much appreciation for our paraprofessionals,” Malone noted. “They are the glue that holds our schools together. This is the largest number of retirees I have seen in my eight years in my role from the paraprofessional ranks.”

During his time in high school, Adam was involved in various groups, but being on Student Council was a highlight. His experience on Student Council helping not just the High School but the greater Westborough community has made an impact on Adam.

As president of the Science Club, Neha realized the need to make science more fun and appealing, especially to girls.

Planning the annual Science Day event was one way to show younger students how fun and interesting science is. These experiences have inspired her to incorporate leadership by focusing on driving positive changes that make a difference in the community.

James has served as RTN’s senior vice president of retail services since 2012 and formerly served as president and CEO of Medical Area Federal Credit Union (MAFCU) until its merger into RTN in 2012.

MARLBOROUGH - Flying Dreams Brewing Co. owner Dave Richardson’s top priority is brewing quality beer.

Richardson, his wife Stephanie and their staff of less than 10 people handle everything from brewing and accounting, to distribution and taproom management.

With 12 medals earned at the 2019 Great International Beer, Cider, Mead & Sake Competition, the most of any brewery, it looks like their methods are working.

“Our goal isn’t to grow as fast as possible, it’s to maintain flavor, high quality beer,” Richardson said.

His hands-on approach to every element is crucial in maintaining that quality. They only distribute within Massachusetts and only to businesses which they know will keep their product properly refrigerated.

“Because we’re owned and run by a brewer, our primary goal is to make good beer,” he said. Prior to opening Flying Dreams, Richardson started working as a professional brewer in 2003 at Red Hook Brewery and Gardner Ale House.

Flying Dreams has operated

as a production facility and 15 person capacity tasting room in Worcester since 2015, but what brought them to open their Marlborough taproom was somewhat of a happy accident.

In 2018, Walden Woods Brewing was set to open in the space at 277 Main Street in Marlborough, but last minute

issues caused them to cancel their plans.

“We got the notification that Walden Woods Brewing wasn’t going to make it, and Marlborough would love for someone to come in, and the space was mostly finished,” he said.

After taking a look at the space and talking with leaders in Marlborough, they decided they could make it work and officially opened in December of 2018.

“When you’re a start-up business, picking it up from its boot straps, you look for those diamonds in the rough,” Richardson said. They opened in Worcester during a time when the city was reinventing itself, similar to what Marlborough has been doing in recent years.

Before the pandemic, Flying Dreams was hosting live music on weekends, but has stopped for the time being.

The taproom offered curbside beer pick up throughout the pandemic which is still available. They now also have permitted outdoor seating

for 48 patrons along Rawlins Avenue, with indoor seating if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

By mid-July they plan to offer indoor and outdoor seating simultaneously once more outdoor furniture arrives.

Their outdoor seating area is shaded by the building during their open afternoon and evening hours, and quiet, set back from Main Street. It is first come, first serve, but you can call ahead to make sure there’s space.

Their rotating beer list includes everything from IPAs to sours and lagers. A Pineapple Gose is their newest addition.

They have pretzels and chips, but also encourage customers to visit local Marlborough eateries and bring their own food.

“People just don’t seem to know we’re here. People see Welly’s or Vin Bin, but we’re set back from the road,” he said.

“We have the product, we just need the people.”

Flying Dreams is open Thursdays and Fridays 4 - 9 p.m., Saturdays 2 - 9 p.m. and Sundays 2 - 8 p.m.

He is survived by his daughters, Karen Bowman and her husband David of Grafton and Tracy Dunning and her husband Eric of Lancaster; his siblings, William Jackman of Arlington, Va., Edward Jackman of Alanya, Turkey, Patricia Altomare of Seabrook, N.H., Laraine Cormack of Conway, N.H., and Diane Prata of Framingham; his grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Bowman and Jace Dunning; his former wife, Katherine (Chapman) Jackman; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, David Jackman, and sister, Susan Penfield.

A graveside service was July 8 at Southborough Rural Cemetery. Morris Funeral Home of Southborough assisted with arrangements.

Edgar R. May Jr., 93 MARLBOROUGH - Edgar R. May Jr., 93, formerly of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Needham, passed away on June 29, 2020. Edgar was a loving and devoted individual and will be missed by many.

He was the devoted husband of Dorothy L (Waldon) May, with whom he recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in March; the beloved father of Laurel Hill, Marlborough, Russell May and his wife Lynea of Bow, N.H., and Bradley May and partner Jan Smith of Orleans; grandfather of Erin Zuaro and her husband Larry of Leominster, Jacqueline Loomis and husband Matt of Sandwich, Brian May and wife Mia of Orinda, Calif., Christopher Hill of Marlborough, Steven May of Grafton, Joshua May and husband Daigle of Wareham, Jeremy May of Allston, Emily May of Newburyport, Madeline May of Hampton, N.H., Ethan May of Londonderry, N.H., and the late Jeffrey May; great-grandfather to four; brother of Judson May and wife Cay of Phoenix, Ariz., Carol Lathrop and husband Clifford of Sun City, Ariz., and the late Courtland May and Sally Towne. He was the son of the late Edgar R. May Sr. and Alice (Blossom) May. Services and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Short & Rowe Funeral Home of Marlborough is assisting with arrangements.
