COMMUNITYVIEWPOINT Letters to the Editor Legislators should support renewable energy act To the Editor,

As we all cope with the “new normal” of today, leaving behind many vestiges of our previous lives, we must ensure that we are still pushing for a better future. We cannot afford to forget the important issues that threatened us before COVID-19 upturned our lives, and that will continue to plague us long after this has passed.

The problem I speak of is the danger of fossil fuel usage. Not only do fossil fuels contribute

to high carbon emissions that devastate the environment, but they adversely affect our own health.

As a college student, intern for MASSPIRG (a nonpartisan student advocacy group), and hopeful future healthcare provider, I cannot be silent on this public health issue. The lining of our lungs is susceptible to damage by the air pollution from fossil fuels, increasing the risk of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. And unfortunately for my generation, we were born at a crossroads where we will be impacted by the long-lasting effects of COVID-19 and the worst consequences of climate change.

Action must be taken soon.

Luckily, the key to a brighter future is at our fingertips. The Decker/Garballey 100% Renewable Energy Act (H.2836) is currently in the House and is the Commonwealth’s best

option for a clean, renewable future. This Act sets Massachusetts up to eliminate all fossil fuels for electricity, heating, and transportation as soon as possible. It establishes stronger interim targets to ensure real progress is made towards 100% renewable energy, and includes environmental justice committees and organized labor in this transition. Passing this Act benefits us all.

Today, I call upon House Speaker Bob DeLeo and Energy Committee Chair Chair Tom Golden to determine if the Act will come up for a vote so it can be passed before the end of the legislative session on July 31.

We need them to step up for our health and climate to pass a bill that will eliminate fossil fuels and address the practically limitless renewable energy potential of Massachusetts.

Quest to be diverse and politically correct is going too far To the Editor:

I have been an avid reader of CA for more than 20 years.

This is the first time I have felt compelled to write. There were 2 articles in the Volume 6, No. 27 issue that I felt were over the top.

The first was the article by Jennifer Grybowski regarding the Westborough Town Seal.

It is unbelievable that there should be a discussion as to whether to remove the image of a cotton gin from the seal.

Eli Whitney invented a labor saving marvel. The fact that slave-owners decided that this was an opportunity to increase their slave ownership should not be construed as a blackmark against Mr. Whitney.

This is an example of a recent trend carried too far [Natick is having a similar debate, but they have a stronger case]. Westborough should continue to honor one of its most famous citizens.

In the same issue was an article by Dakota Antelman over diversity at the Northborough town offices. He states that the selectmen/women suggested that because there are no black employees at the town offices, the town should recruit someone to work there [at what we don’t know] so the town would appear to be diverse and politically correct. This is a stretch that is totally unnecessary. If the town posts a job and ends up hiring a black person [because they are the best candidate, not because they are black] fine. No problem. [I, for one, have no qualm going to the RMV and seeing half the people working there are minorities.] But the town shouldn’t try to force the issue because of PC. Next, there would be complaining that we don’t have an Asian employee. Once again, I wouldn’t care if we had one or not, but let’s not get one just to be PC and diverse.

By the way, don’t bother labeling me a racist, 4 out of 5 people in my household are of dark skin, including my wife.

An open letter to the Westborough community To the Editor: As we reflect upon the brutal events of the past months and years, we are heartbroken by the suffering and atrocities that members of the Black community have endured. We, the undersigned Trustees, and staff of the Westborough Public Library, stand against systemic racism and racist violence. We believe that Black lives matter.

We stand with those who condemn racism, those who work for racial justice and those who exercise their first amendment right to peacefully protest these injustices.

It is the role of a library to provide resources and services in a variety of media to meet the needs of individuals and groups for education, information, and personal development. As a public service institution, we owe it to our community to address inequities that exist within our collection.

Westborough officials address COVID related complaints

Following the science REGION - Throughout history, science and politics have made for strange bedfellows. Although they seemingly rely on one another, sometimes the message of the scientist is not politically convenient. Case in point…Dr. Anthony Fauci. Although he is widely recognized as one of the leading experts in the field of infectious disease, his message of masks and keeping others safe is in conflict with the politically attractive view that everything is under control and we should get back to life as it was.

The fact is that we are in a defining time for America…will Americans across the nation take responsibility for limiting the spread of the virus or will they thumb their collective noses at the science and simply hope for the best? Regardless of the choice, the pandemic will help define who we are as a nation.

WESTBOROUGH - The Board of Health and Board of Selectmen met jointly July 7 to discuss some COVID-19 related issues.

Selectman Leigh Emery said she had witnessed a party with over 100 people in her neighborhood with live entertainment and people didn›t appear to be wearing masks.

She wondered what could be done about such parties, if anything.

Board of Health Chair Nathan Walsh said block parties are not allowed and that she should have felt free to let the police know what was going on.

“You could notify the Board of Health, but we don›t have enforcement action so we would notify police,» he said.

He pointed out that live entertainment is allowed, but the entertainer(s) must be 10 feet from other people

COMMUNITYNEWS Selectmen discuss next steps on changing town seal

Grybowski Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Selectmen went back and forth for nearly an hour at their meeting July 7 about how to handle public input regarding a possible change of the town seal. Selectmen began discussing the issue at their June 23 meeting in response to public outcry, and decided then that they wanted to facilitate a way for people to make their thoughts known. Members of the Board and the town manager’s office have already received numerous correspondences, but the Board expressed interest in holding a hearing or meeting of some sort as well.

Town Manager Kristi Williams pointed out that there is no requirement to hold a public hearing as the changing of the

town seal is a Town Meeting decision and not a Board of Selectmen’s decision, and that the Board had other options of soliciting public comment.

However, all selectmen agreed some type of gathering that would allow people to have their thoughts heard on the matter was important.

“The magic happens when dialogue happens,” Selectman Ian Johnson said.

Williams said the Zoning and Planning boards have been successfully holding public hearings, and gave several options including holding it outside and holding it virtually.

“I’ve seen it [virtually] work very well for public comment in other towns,” Board of Selectmen Chair Shelby Marshall said.

should give it its well due.”

Edinberg disagreed.

“Given the current cultural climate in which this issue has been raised, and even the amount of email we’ve received already without saying we are having a public comment period, I don’t think it has in the minds of many of our residents any less of a sense of urgency,” he said. “I think the question should be how can we be as inclusive as possible to get feedback in a timely manner so that we as a Board feel informed and empowered enough to make a decision on the way forward.”

All agreed it would be challenging to have a replacement town seal ready for October, but all agreed it would be best to put at least a vote regarding rescinding the town seal on the October warrant, even if a new

the Planning Board in Westborough, but acknowledged there will likely be many more people attending a town seal meeting.

“I suspect this meeting will take longer than if it were live but would definitely be workable,” he said.

Johnson advocated to have a meeting in person, stating people often struggle with technology and there are some people who don’t have the technology to participate at all. The other selectmen agreed an in-person meeting would be better.

There was also some discussion about the timeline.

“Is timing so much of the essence that we go to suboptimal means of getting public input,” Johnson asked. “I do feel like this is an important topic for many people and I think we

seal isn’t voted on until March, noting that if the selectmen don’t put it on the warrant, there will likely be a citizen’s petition to do so.

“By the Board putting a framework around it, it allows people to be heard,” Marshall said “My sense is this will go forward whether the Board chooses to be on board or not.”

Regardless, all also agreed it would be important to have public comment and debate before Town Meeting, so that Town Meeting time isn’t taken up with debate and also so that people have the chance to speak their minds without the risk of somebody moving the question and ending debate.

No date for a meeting has been set yet. The Diversity and Inclusion Committee spearhead the process of coming up with a new seal.

these days,” he said. “I think things need to be put into perspective. We have relied on voluntary compliance for the rules and that has been by and large successful. My own bias is that we need to keep trying to encourage people to do the right thing but I think bringing in law enforcement should be a last resort.”

Syed Hashmi, who is a selectman, as well as a member of the Board of Health, agreed.

“The police have enough things to worry about,» he said. “This is personal responsibility.”

Selectman Allen Edinberg said he had received several correspondence from residents wondering about Cold Harbor Brewing’s operations.

In particular, he said people have mentioned people turning in and refilling growlers, patrons sitting on the hill or in the parking lot and a lack of food truck when alcohol is being served.

«So to serve, there needs a food truck or something. And people should not be going up to the bar to order, but table service should be provided.”

Sanitarian Ray Gauthier said he has received similar complaints. When he checked in with the managers, he said, the growlers were being

handled properly and said Cold Harbor does have a food permit with the town, and that bar food like pretzels or nuts are considered food. He also said he believes for breweries the guidance is different and that table service is not required.

The BOH team agreed to keep working with the managers, and bring in the build-

ing and fire departments if necessary, since those two entities are required to have approval for an establishment to operate outdoors temporarily. The BOS agreed to research the alcohol serving guidance, since they issue all liquor licenses.

Finally, both Baccari and Town Manager Kristi Williams said the town is starting

to get requests to use town properties for gatherings and events, and were looking for direction on if the town was ready to start giving out permits. The boards agreed to follow along with state guidelines, but due to conflicting information in some documents, decided to do some further research before moving forward.

Marlborough scientist-turned-watercolorist has no regrets

By Peg Lopata Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH - Michele Clamp, 52, a native of England who now resides in Marlborough, is one of those artists that listens to her own mind. After a long career in computational biology, including working on the Human Genome Project, she retired early three years ago and now devotes her time to watercolor painting.

“Every day I can wake up and think about what shall I paint today and just go out and do it,” said Clamp.

While she admits she had a dream research job at Harvard University, she now says she cannot imagine doing anything else but painting.

Choosing to retire early required some forethought.

Clamp and her husband saved and saved for years to downsize. They sold their house in Somerville and moved to Marlborough, which allowed Clamp’s husband to continue to do consulting work in the Boston area in a more affordable location.

“Marlborough’s a great place to live,” Clamp noted. “We’re lucky that it all worked out. Although our ability to spend like we use to is gone, I don’t regret it for a moment.”

Now she’s doing something that brings her joy as well as bringing joy to others. Though she’s lived in the U.S. many years, she brings that very English sensibility to her watercolors which favor subtle light and muted colors. There’s delicacy, but not cloying sentimentality.

Her landscapes evoke simplicity, but are not overdone idealism. She admits that without the stress of relying on sales she paints freely.

“To rely on sales would affect my painting enormously. There’s the temptation to change your style or your subject matter to tempt buyers,” she said. “I paint whatever tickles me on a particular day, even if it’s soft focus kittens with bows round their necks then that’s the subject you have to go with and suffer the ridicule.”

Though kittens may not capture her fancy, she does have a fondness for painting owls.

Clamp has discovered that teaching painting is also very rewarding. As luck would have it, the Post Road Art Center needed an art teacher.

“I’m far enough along in my painting journey that I have some skills to pass on, but also close enough to beginning to remember what it’s like to start and all the frustrations that come along with that. My own painting has changed a great deal for the better since I started teaching. It’s been very gratifying.”

According to Clamp, giving up a safe, well-paying job to do something she wanted to do has been her best accomplishment so far in life, especially considering that she thinks of herself as risk-adverse by nature.

“Painting makes me happy.

I love it because it’s so forwardlooking. You finish one painting and you learn things and that launches you onto the next one,” she remarked. “It’s really hard work and sometimes I toil away not getting anywhere.

Shrewsbury resident’s ‘Vertigo Trivia’ goes digital for virtual events

By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer SHREWSBURY/WESTBOROUGH – Since 2015, Dan Barbour of Shrewsbury has hosted games with his small business Vertigo Trivia at various venues including libraries, schools, office parties and bars. Pandemic restrictions spurred him to create digital trivia kits that can be used for both virtual and live group events.

“As soon as the restrictions started, I actually had 11 gigs get canceled within 48 hours,” he relayed. “People still wanted to play trivia, but didn’t know how to do it.”

While the trivia business is Barbour’s side gig, his day job since May 2018 is circulation supervisor at Westborough Public Library. During the stay-at-home advisory’s early months, he hosted free trivia games online for Westborough library patrons.

events. From 2007 to May 2018, he worked as the young adult librarian and volunteer coordinator at Shrewsbury Public Library.

“I was trying to find events that would stimulate both teenagers and families,” he noted.

“The library trivia events started with five or six people around a table. It grew to 90 to 100 people with the games on monitors in three rooms.”

Teens attendance further increased in 2009 when Barbour appeared as one of 12 contestants on ABC-TV’s reality program “I Survived a Japanese Game Show.” Each week, a contestant was eliminated.

He survived up to the show’s midway point.

“I wanted to break the stereotype that library workers are quiet and reserved,” he said. “I got this great opportunity to travel for free and

showcase that library workers can have a ton of fun. The teen group that I was running at the time got many more members after the show started airing.”

A self-described “people person,” Barbour incorporated his passions for fun and games with his goal to launch a small business in 2015. The longestrunning venue where he has hosted trivia games is Vintage Grille on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester. His first show there was March 10, 2015.

“I try to host games that I would also want to play,” he explained. “I want it be fastpaced and have something for everyone. I pull from all sorts of topics.”

Local fundraising affected by closures

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer REGION – The changes that have been made due to COVID-19 closures have not been easy for businesses, schools or families. Many local non-profit organizations have also been affected as major fundraising events cannot be held.

The Boylston Education Foundation (BEF) awards grants in the fall to provide educational and classroom enrichment materials falling outside of the normal school budget. Grants help to decrease out-of-pocket expenses for the teachers. Items granted in the past include technology, art supplies, library books and science supplies.

BEF Co-President Nicki Fox said that the organization’s annual Bingo Night had to be cancelled. This event typically is a fun time for the entire community to come together and usually has high participation.

“The less money raised means the less we will be able to put back into the school,” she said. “We will do something and work with the principal and decide the best route of action when it is safe to do so.”

Another issue that BEF is sensitive to is the fact that many families are now struggling, and they do not want their events to further burden families.

President of Northborough Education Foundation (NEF) Noel Silva said their two biggest events, Team Trivia Night and Princess Tea, had to be cancelled. Their staff recognition Golden Apple campaign that does well for teacher appreciation week and end of the year gifts also was paused.

NEF awarded $65,000 in grants last fall. Before the closures, only five grant proposals were received. Currently, they do not have funds to distribute more grants. Schools will continue to need the support and NEF will be creative to meet those needs.

“We want to provide whatever we can,” Silva said. “We are discussing the possibility of changing the grant cycle when schools reopen in the fall. “There’s no rule book. It will depend on how things shake out. We want to move forward.”

School Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs) are also

affected.

The Fannie E. Proctor Elementary School in Northborough was not able to hold its annual kids’ fair and silent auction this spring, which typically raise $10,000.

“We do anticipate the budget looking different for the 2020-2021 school year than it has in the past,” said PTO President Jennifer Kenny. “This might mean adjusting funding for certain programs.”

Northborough’s Marguerite E. Peaslee Elementary School PTO chairs Meghan Rossetti and Lindsey Moussa were disappointed to have to postpone the anticipated Harlem Wizards basketball game vs. school staff and pre-game restaurant night fundraisers until April 2021.

“We are pre-planning different scenarios for our events next year,” Rossetti said. “We hope to move forward with the same events understanding the timing may shift or it may be different than how it has been in the past.”

Also unknown is how local businesses, which highly support fundraising events, will rebound.

“It’s a good time for the school community to rally around past and present business sponsors to show gratitude and appreciation,” Moussa noted.

“Our hope is that this unprecedented time brings the community closer together,” Kenny said. “We understand everyone is facing hardships right now.”

“You can host multiple sessions,” he emphasized. “You can play online in this age where we need to be socially distanced, but you can take the same file and customize it if you ever want to project it

on a big screen in a room when we can meet again.”

Proposed changes to MassHealth estate recovery

Estate recovery in Massachusetts is expansive.

Recently, advocates and state politicians have proposed changes to the Massachusetts estate recovery program as a result of COVID-19. Emergency legislation was recently filed to provide relief to families dealing with MassHealth estate recovery claims during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill proposes to temporarily halt estate recovery during the pandemic.

Some of the bill’s key provisions including tolling interest on estate recovery claims, providing individuals with a longer time period to contest estate recovery claims, and imposing a moratorium on the forced sale of property to satisfy estate recovery claims during the pandemic.

The bill is co-sponsored by State Sen. Jo Comerford (D-Northhampton) and State Rep. Christine Barber {D-Somerville).

The bill is also supported by the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute (MLRI), Massachusetts Councils on Aging, Massachusetts Senior Action Council, the Massachusetts Advocates for Nursing Home Reform, and Mass Home Care. If enacted, advocates are hopeful that this bill will lead to more permanent changes to the MassHealth estate recovery program.

Westborough student earns trip to international science fair

Wadekar Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Amrita Thirumalai, 16, earned a bid to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which was to be held in Anaheim, Calif., in May. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, ISEF, the world’s largest science and engineering fair, was canceled. The Society for Science and the Public, the organization that runs the fair, hosted an online, non-competitive version of the fair to allow finalists to display their work.

Thirumalai’s work is aimed at helping those who use sign language to communicate more effectively. She explained that there is a divide between those who use sign language and the general population.

She also said that although past research has tried to bridge this gap, efforts to do so have been largely unviable and ineffective.

“Researchers have worked on the sign language glove for decades,” Thirumalai said.

“But it’s not a viable product for those in the deaf community because it doesn’t allow people to sign naturally, thereby slowing down the signing rate.”

Last summer, Thirumalai volunteered at the Seven Hills Foundation, an organization that allows people with disabilities to participate in group activities. She said that working with people at Seven Hills sparked her interest in creating solutions for communication.

Thirumalai’s work uses a sensor to track various hand movements, and then a trained supervised machine learning system to interpret those gestures, ultimately translating them into letters and numbers.

She conducted this work at home under the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Program, in which all juniors at the school are required to take on a year-long research project.

The top students out of the junior class are invited to participate in the Worcester Regional Science and Engineering Fair (WRSEF). Ordinarily, those that win top awards at the fair become members of the Massachusetts delegation to Regeneron ISEF. However, this year, because Worcester Polytechnic Institute canceled all in-person events due to the

Hapgood, who operated a cider mill on what is now Oak Street, processed apples into cider for many of the local growers. From several accounts, both regular and “hard” cider was produced, then shipped off to Worcester and other locations. The Hapgood cider mill ceased operations many years ago (the exact date remains to be discovered), however the building that once housed the mill still stands at what is now 105 Oak Street, where it has been a private residence since those long ago times. Our photograph shows one of the labels Mr. Hapgood would put on to his cider bottles back in those days.

She is also seeking mentorship for her continued work.

Outside of school and her research, Thirumalai enjoys to dance, sing, and is an active participant in her school’s robotics team. Her favorite subjects in school are mathematics and computer science. She is interested in studying computer science after graduating from high school.

Tie-dye family tradition is shared with community

NORTHBOROUGH - Lifetime Northborough resident Brenda Convery brought a lot of positivity and smiles to people recently, when she shared her family’s love of tie-dying with the community. She displayed a clothing collection at the end of her driveway, and people were encouraged to stop by to choose an item free of charge.

The 20-year family tradition of tie-dying began when Convery’s adult daughters Brittany and JoAnne were young and involved in Girl Scouts. They all still tie-dye together and Brittany now shares the tradition in her preschool classroom.

Convery said that like so many people during the quarantine, she has been busy house cleaning and organizing.

“I realized my tie-dye collection was quite large,” she said. “The idea was part practical and part wanting to do something positive. I figured tie-dyes were colorful and

cheerful, and a great way to remind people to keep smiling as we wait to get back to normal.”

Convery decided to give away the almost 100 tie-dyed shirts, onesies and socks for free as a way of connecting with people. With a little publicity assistance from her daughters, the clothes rack was empty by dinnertime.

“I got a lot of positive messages on Facebook telling me it was a great idea, thanking me for doing it and it seemed people really enjoyed it,” she said. “There was beeping and some shout outs from the driveway.”

Convery is a familiar face in Northborough as she previously worked at FunCare, a kindergarten program located in the basement of Northborough Town Hall before full day kindergarten was offered, and later worked at Skribbles Learning Center. She currently is a support aide at Robert E. Melican Middle School.

dyes frequently and has made it a part of her Casual Friday attire. In addition to showing students how to tie-dye through the years, she has shared her craft at tie-dying events with different camp groups, summer school programs, libraries, fundraisers and birthday parties.

“With the left over dye from these events, I would experiment with different color combinations and designs and accumulated quite the collection of shirts and stuff,” Convery said. “These would become gifts for family or co-workers’ birthdays, holidays, and baby showers.”

Convery even had a tie-dye themed wedding four years ago in her backyard and the favors were, of course, tie-dye shirts.

She is currently out of shirts and has to rebuild her collection before having a repeat event.

“I did get a lot of messages from people asking about shirts, so who knows,” she said.

SHREWSBURY – “What’s better than being outside and walking and reading?” inquired Kevin Esposito, Parks and Cemetery Division manager for Shrewsbury Parks & Recreation July 2 at the StoryWalk Project installation located at Lake Street Park.

They had planned to unveil the StoryWalk on opening day June 29 but were forced to cancel due to inclement weather.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Herzog installed as Marlborough Rotary Club President MARLBOROUGH - Following the June Marlborough Rotary Club Board of Directors meeting June 24, the installation of President Alan Herzog and his officers was held. The special evening meeting immediately followed 2019-2020 President Darlene Trainor’s last regular monthly Board Meeting and was attended by nine board members and several club members via Zoom.

Past-President Dave Brower (1996-97) officiated at the annual Installation of the new team of officers, which included President-Elect Andy Eick, Vice President Aaron Aykanian, Treasurer Stephen Maintanis and Immediate Past-President Darlene Trainor.

Also installed were the board members for the 20202021 year: for a three-year term, Sem Aykanian, Lynn Faust and Peggy Sheldon; for a two-year term, Nick Kofos, David Morticelli and Peggie Thorsen; and for a one-year term, Bonnie Doolin, Elaine McDonald and Peter Mongeau.

son. He currently resides in Northborough with his wife and two children. Herzog joined St Mary’s Credit Union in 2004 and currently manages the Framingham branch as assistant vice president, branch manager. He joined the Marlborough Rotary Club in September of 2016 as the member representative of Corporate Member St. Mary’s Credit Union.

He has served as the Rotary’s treasurer, vice president and president-elect over the last four years.

In his address to the club, Herzog urged members to get involved to a larger extent to face the challenges of the current pandemic and the resulting regulations for conducting fundraisers and service projects.

“This coming year will be filled with a lot of challenges and we will look at it as an opportunity to come together as a club and an opportunity to evolve,” Herzog said. “I would like to call on each of you to be an active part in this journey as we plan our fundraisers and service programs.”

She suggested the Lake Street Park path because it was accessible to everyone.

“We jumped at the chance to help out with this and we really look forward to changing it every couple of weeks,” Esposito shared.

Books were deconstructed and pages were laminated by library staff and staked along the paved path by Parks & Recreation staff. There are 30 stations along the 1/3-mile path.

Drotar and the other children’s librarians selected four books that will be on display.

Currently, the selection is “Duck on A Bike” by David Shannon. On July 13, “Over in the Forest: Come and Take a Peek” by Marianne Berkes will be installed, followed by “Stella, Fairy of the Forest” by Marie-Louise Gay on July 27.

On August 10, the installation will conclude with “We Don’t Eat our Classmates” by Ryan T. Higgins.

“There is a nationwide initiative ‘Let’s Move in Libraries’ and they do a lot of outdoor programs for kids and adults and this is one of the most popular,” Rathnam explained. “I thought it would be a great project as it combines literacy and nature education. Encouraging families to go outdoors and take a stroll in our parks and trails is appropriate this summer as it’s an activity that can be done with social distancing and following other safety guidelines during COVID-19.”

Rose, the president and CEO of Thrive Support & Advocacy, a Marlboroughbased nonprofit that celebrates and nurtures the abilities of people with developmental disabilities, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for the Sean M. Rose Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers (ADDP). He joins the board for a three-year term commencing July 1.

ADDP promotes and ensures the strength of community-based providers in Massachusetts, so members can be successful in improving the quality, access, and value of services in the community.

ADDP is committed to enhancing the political, financial and educational health of member organizations that serve people with disabilities, including intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as acquired brain injuries.

Rose brings to the position more than 23 years of experience working with and advocating for the needs of families and communities. He has held various leadership roles in the public sector, private programs and municipalities. Before joining Thrive Support & Advocacy, Rose was most recently executive director of the Justice Resource Institute (JRI) in Connecticut. He is also serving his second term as city councilor in Worcester.

Although open during the pandemic, for emergencies only per order of the state, Dr. Ramos and her team missed their patients.

“We are now again seeing patients for cleanings, fillings, crowns and other elective procedures,” Dr. Ramos was pleased to report.

“However, coming back after 3 months was a challenge.

We needed to make sure we followed all the new protocols recommended by the CDC and OSHA and to make sure we had all the PPE needed before resuming normal operations,” she continued.

Northborough’s ‘Reincarnated Antiques’

Both buildings were built at very different time periods, resulting in significantly different architecture and initial uses. The 19 South Street building was built circa 1850 as a residence with a Federal design and is known as the S. Jerauld House. The property remained in the Jerauld family into the 1870s. The 17 South Street building was built as a hardware store in 1907. The building is typical of the commercial architecture of the period in its sitting directly on the sidewalk and its use of a parapet to increase the apparent height of the building and conceal the roof.

17 South Street is well known as “Northboro Hardware”. This town institution was built by Walter J. Bigelow for his hardware and plumbing business. The second floor had a large open room. From

With the demolition of antique properties in Northborough a fairly regular occurrence, it seemed that it was time to recognize owners who have found creative reuse options for their antique properties.

Today’s properties are 17 and 19 South Street. These two adjoining structures are currently owned by Dr. Cynthia Poulos, where she runs her Classique Medical Spa business. Dr. Poulos purchased the buildings because of their great location in the center of town, value, unique structures and an opportunity for preservation. She acknowledged they both presented significant challenges to renovate while complying with current building codes. 1910 to 1924 the Northborough Historical Society housed their collection of artifacts there and called it “Bigelow Hall”.

In 1927, Mr. Bigelow sold the business to John Fairley. John and then his son, Arthur, ran Northboro Hardware until it closed.

Arthur Fairley was well known and well respected in town. During middle school, he started working there for his father. He focused on customer service. Customers

would walk to the counter and Mr. Fairley would help them decide what they needed and then walk into the stacks to retrieve the merchandise.

During Arthur’s ownership the second floor was run as a dance studio by the Mongeons. Many fond memories were recently mentioned about Arthur’s generosity and the dance studio in a recent “I Grew up in Northboro, Massachusetts!” Facebook posting. In 1992, at the age of 64,

Arthur decided to close the business. He found customers were more interested in do-ityourself shopping at the Big Box hardware stores. Mr. Fairly passed away in 2014.

This example of “Reincarnated Antiques” reveals how two very different antiques can be saved from demolition when a creative buyer is found who recognizes the value of preservation. Thank you Dr. Poulos for preserving Northborough history.

Aero Coffee Roasters located at 318 Main Street, Northborough opened in midMay, and owner Peter Femino is excited to share his experiences with customers and provide them with a unique total bean to cup coffee experience.

This is Femino’s third start up in the coffee business, previously operating four retail locations in downtown Boston for the past 15 years. Aero Coffee Roasters is the culmination of everything he has come to love in the coffee industry-- roasting, customer interactions, and baking.

He is aware of the market’s competitiveness, but his commitment to bring the full coffee experience to the customer is strong.

“The space is perfect; it has everything I need,” said Femino. “Although there are other

coffee shops in town, none of them offer the total coffee experience under one roof that we will provide--coffee roasting, café, and bakery. You really need to come into the store to experience it.”

Hosting group cuppings is an important part of the business concept, but may need modifications due to current state restrictions.

The cupping process entails identifying the flavors and characteristics of a coffee bean.

COMMUNITYSCHOOLS St. John’s starts process for fall semester SHREWSBURY – St. John’s High School recently announced its initial plans for students to return to its 378 Main St. campus this fall. In a letter from Headmaster Alex Zequeira and Principal Margaret Rourke Granados, families were advised of some of those plans.

“We want to begin by reiterating that the health and safety of all in the Saint John’s community remains our top priority. As a result, we will continue to adhere to federal and state guidelines as we further develop this comprehensive campus safety protocol,” the letter said. “Our goal is to resume the many signature on-campus curricular and co-curricular experiences that make Saint John’s so transformative for our boys and young men.

“It is very important to note that this document represents our thinking today, and will be continuously updated and communicated to you as we approach our return to campus in September.”

In the letter, Zequeira and Rourke Granados noted that although St. John’s had “moved to a remote-instruction environment” last fall, “do not believe continued remote instruction is a sustainable longterm solution for our school.”

The administrators noted that in May they created a task force to review the most likely options for the 2020-2021 academic year based on data available.

Marlborough student wins major scholarship for Women in STEM MARLBOROUGH - Rising to the top of a dozen high-caliber candidates, Marlborough resident Kaya Dorogi was recently announced as the first-ever recipient of the Mary Székely Scholarship for Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The $10,000 scholarship is awarded by Progress, a well-known leader in the application development and digital experience technologies field, and is renewable annually for four years in honor of Mary Székely, a founder and lead software engineer at Progress for over 30 years.

According to Katie Kulikoski, chief people officer at Progress, only 28 percent of STEM positions are held by women.

“We are trying to make an impact and fill the funnel of available talent by reaching young women at an earlier age,” she said. “Our best attempt to rebalance the number of women in tech fields is by supporting females earlier in their life cycle, promoting STEM to girls in grade school and middle school. With this scholarship, we hope that our recipient, Kaya, will be a role model and mentor for others.”

Dorogi recently graduated from the Bancroft School in Worcester, where she captained the Alpine Skiing Team, Girls’ Tennis Team, and the Math Team, and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society. As a sophomore, she and another student, Lucy Hao, started a chapter of Future Business Leaders of America. Outside of school, she enjoyed working with Congressman Jim McGovern on his Youth Congres-

Dorogi worked as an intern for a company called Battlecard, a sales software platform, in New York since the summer after her sophomore year, continuing to work remotely for them during school breaks.

SHREWSBURY/WESTBOROUGH – The Host Committee of the sixth annual Hannah Kane Charity Classic Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17, at the Haven Country Club in Boylston recently announced that the tournament will go on as planned, but will be modified.

State Representative Hannah Kane (R-Shrewsbury) and Beth Casavant, tournament director and chair of the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen, spent weeks thinking about whether the event could even happen.

After much debate, it was determined that a tournament could be formatted while adhering to public health guidance.

The organizers felt that the needs of the organizations supported by the tournament outweighed the risks. Beneficiaries of the tournament, St. Anne’s Human Services, Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services, and Westborough Food Pantry are in dire need due to the current crisis.

Howard Grossman of Grossman Development Group is reprising his role as presenting sponsor.

“I know that the needs in

these communities exist year after year,” he said, “but in the midst of this crisis it is imperative that we step up and support those not as fortunate as we are.”

“The need has never been stronger to support these three vital human service organizations. Each of these critical nonprofits has been working hard to serve even more of our community members during the public health crisis that has caused deep economic harm,” Kane added. “I am so grateful for Howard Grossman’s leadership and to all our sponsors who stepped up right away to provide generous financial support.”

Sr Elizabeth is survived by her niece, Christine Buonopane of Manchester, N.H.; her cousin, Stephen and his wife Mary Kirkland; and her dear friend, Diana Coady of Mastic Beach, N.Y. Her graveside service was held July 10 at Mount Benedict Cemetery of West Roxbury.
