School officials outline hybrid model for return to classes Students to be assigned to one of two major cohorts

By Jennifer L. Grybowski Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Students in Westborough will return to school Tuesday, Sept 8 to a hybrid model of instruction.

Superintendent Amber Bock and Assistant Superintendent Daniel Mayer presented a much-anticipated draft return-to-school plan to School Committee members at their meeting Wednesday night.

Students will be divided into two major cohorts navy and cardinal - with an effort being made to assign siblings to the same cohort. Students in the cardinal cohort will attend school on campus Mondays and Wednesdays, and students in the navy cohort will attend school on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cohorts will alternate half days on Friday mornings.

“We think this is a design that allows us to focus on providing meaningful at home instructional time,” Bock said. “It gives us some robust options to maximize the content.”

Students will receive instruction while on campus and will follow a schedule and complete focused work while at home; work might include things like virtual meetings with specialists or paraprofessionals, independent work, virtual group work, or work on learning sites. There will be no live casting from the classroom.

Bock made it clear the home days are not days off and that work will be fully graded using the standards.

us it is at least as important that they investigate all aspects of the discussion before committing to a position as extreme as hers. (Her position is probably a damning statement on the quality of our science education in our schools.)

Rather than go through a whole litany of the reasons the green energy religion is just that, a religion, let me give you one absolute fact. During the hot days of our last heat wave 90 percent of the electricity in New England was produced by natural gas and nuclear.

(Natural gas was about 70 percent and nuclear about 20 percent). Of the remaining 10 percent about 4 percent was from solar and wind with wind being most of that.

And of course that night solar was zero. (This paltry contribution from solar and wind even after many years and many millions of dollars spent on them). And it’s the same people who tout the benefits of green energy who are actively trying to close down the nuclear generating facilities which in fact produce the vast majority of the green energy.

The large influx of new voices speaking out against institutional racism and prejudice has been extremely hopeful. It is also my hope that everyone brings this same commitment and enthusiasm, in their full capacity, to Town Board meetings, School Committee meetings, meetings with local Law Enforcement, PTO meetings, classrooms, libraries, places of work, places of worship, and family gatherings. To the Editor: As towns in Central Massachusetts begin or continue their discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion, it is important we move swiftly from temporary to consistent and sustainable local action.

While participating in protests is certainly a powerful way for individuals to draw more attention to these issues, the next steps are much more complex than holding a sign in the center of town. Any deviation from established social norms is often an uncomfortable process that is met with various layers of denial, resistance, and delay. To counter

Several schools and municipal departments in the area have begun the process of developing short and long term plans to address these issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. While we are certainly moving forward as a region, we are still behind in these conversations and must be mindful of that in

the energy used for transportation (vehicular, boat and air travel) and the many irreplaceable uses required of industry.

Now, is at all reasonable to really expect that by a stroke of a pen the legislature can change this? I think science will prove otherwise.

And if the young people of today really want to be concerned about their health don’t do what my generation has done. Don’t smoke, don’t use alcohol to excess, don’t do drugs, don’t get fat, and do exercise. Good health throughout your life will follow.

Public hearing set for potential third marijuana shop in Marlborough

REGION – August is usually a time for back-to-school shopping as families flock to local stores with lists in hand. Normally, those lists include items such as pencils, notebooks and lunch boxes. This year, of course, is a year like no other, so things such as face coverings, hand sanitizer, and cleaning wipes will no doubt be featured prominently.

That is, of course, if students even are allowed to return to their physical classes this fall.

Districts across the state are now assessing different models of learning (in person, remote or a hybrid) while families anxiously await the final decisions.

Education and the ‘New Normal’

M A R L B O RO U G H — L o c a l Roots NE (LRNE) is seeking a special permit to locate an adult-use marijuana dispensary at 910 Boston Post Road East (Route 20), Suite 100. The City Council has set a public hearing for Monday, Sept. 14.

In a July 14 letter to the City Council, local business owner Richard Olstein outlined the details of the request and noted that he and his business partner Michael Staiti currently own multiple properties in the city and run their a real estate development and private lending company in the same building (910 Boston Post Road East) not far from the Sudbury line.

According to Olstein’s letter, LRNE said he and Staiti joined founders Dean Iandoli and Catherine Trifilo in 2018 who started the company after “learning of the benefits of medical marijuana in treating their 15-year old son [who suf-

fers] with Tourette’s Syndrome.”

Local Roots NE is currently headquartered in Marlborough with a dispensary in Fitchburg and cultivation facilities in Framingham and Barre. The company is planning to occupy 1,885 square feet with 885 square feet of retail space and 970 square feet or security equipment and office space.

The plan includes 25 dedicated parking spaces in the current lot with additional spots available.

“There is widespread agreement within the industry that there will be a large undersupply of product for retail sale over the next 3-5 years,” Olstein wrote in his letter.

Vedi Naturals is seeking Council approval on a permit for a dispensary at the Twin Boro Crossing Plaza at the corner of Route 20 West and Boundary Street.

Garden Remedies was the first to request a special permit and has been operating a medical and adult-use dispensary at Marlborough Square Plaza.

Westborough to start ‘Complete Streets’ program

By Jennifer L. Grybowski Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - The Department of Public Works has already been busy this summer with projects, but new for this year is the town’s participation in the state-driven Complete Street program.

According to MassDOT, a “Complete Street” is one that provides safe and accessible options for all travel modes – walking, biking, transit, and motorized vehicles – for people of all ages and abilities.

Designing streets with these principles contributes toward the safety, health, economic viability and quality of life in a community by improving the pedestrian and vehicular environments. It provides safer, more accessible and comfortable means of travel between home, school, work, recreation and retail destinations.

accessing the center easier,” said Westborough’s Complete Street Consultant William J. Scully, P.E., vice president of Green International Affiliates, Inc. “Our goal is to make things safe and comfortable.”

The Complete Streets program was rolled out in 2016, and around 250 towns and cities have already participated in the program.

The MassDOT Complete Streets Funding Program

provides technical assistance and construction funding to eligible municipalities.

“It’s a funding source, and we should take advantage of DOT funding to get projects done,” said DPW Director Chris Payant.

The Board of Selectmen heard a Complete Streets presentation in March, and enthusiastically authorized submission of a grant proposal to apply to the program.

The town received the grant, in the amount of $37,900.

The grant provides funding for technical assistance to analyze their community needs and develop a Complete Streets Prioritization Plan.

“It requires you to create a policy, list, and projects for funding,” Payant said. “It creates this avenue for us to be thoughtful, systematic, and timely to make improvements to existing things or think about new things.”

Scully said one of the attractive parts of the program is that it has a quick timeline.

“We don’t want to get bogged down in years-long studies or data,” he said. “The plan process is pretty tight and simple. We are using the information that’s available and existing and reports and data to a large degree.”

The plan is usually completed in a few short months, but was held up by the pandemic shutdown. “But we are really rocking and rolling at this point,” Scully said.

Scully will work with the DPW to identify about 20 to 25 main roads to focus on, and they will look at things like crash data, how they are marked, crosswalks, sidewalks, bike lanes, ADA ramps and more. A working committee made up of certain department and committee heads will meet a few times to review the findings and give input.

“This is a forcing function for us as a town to come up with a list of what we think is important for mobility for pedestrians, bicycles and cars,” Payant said.

There will also be an opportunity for residents to comment on the project and make suggestions regarding improvements through an online portal. Residents are urged to keep an eye on the town’s DPW page for more information.

The plan becomes a laundry list of deficiencies/needs eligible for finding to implement. This list, which is typically between 30 and 60 items, will be prioritized.

Items might include things like designated bicycle lanes and parking, signal prioritization, radar feedback signage, street lighting, street trees and furniture, traffic calming measures, sidewalks, way finding signage, ADA/ AAB-accessible curb ramps, and more.

Potential funding opportunities for each item will also be identified. Some of that funding is available through the Complete Streets program itself, and other funding is available through various other state grants and sources.

“It is an opportunity to do some positive things in the transportation world and be eligible to get some supplemental funding for projects,” Scully said.

Residents strongly opposed to Marlborough development Proposal is for 188-unit complex on Route 20

By Vicki Greene Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH– Substantial increase in traffic, environmental damage and strain on city resources were top concerns voiced by opponents speaking at the City Council’s July 20 public hearing on a proposed 188-unit residential complex planned for 339 Boston Post Road (Route 20 east).

The property was previously known as the McGee Farm/ Veterinary property. Opponents all echoed the sentiment that the proposal was for “a beautiful project in the wrong location.”

Attorney Brian Falk gave an updated presentation to the Council prior to questions and comments. The special permit is being sought by WP Marlborough MA LLC, a subsidiary of Waypoint Real Estate Investments headquartered in Florida with the closest regional office in Stamford, Conn.

The 188- high-end residential apartment project, originally named Volaris Marlborough, has been changed to Walcott Heritage Farms. Falk explained that the name change takes into consideration the history of the property.

The development includes four, four-floor buildings with 29 units deemed affordable units with a total 128 onebedroom and 60-2-bedroom apartments. According to Falk, 70 percent of the south end of the 26-acre property will be left as green space and the old horse track will become a walking trail. There are 376 parking spaces and the approximate net annual revenue to the city is approximately $510,000. De-

velopers expect 15 school-aged children to live at the property at any given time.

City Clerk Steven Kerrigan noted at the beginning of the hearing that the city had received 23 written communications in opposition to the project and Councilor Laura Wagner said she had seen a total of more than 100 call and emails that has come in to herself and the Council opposing the project.

Many neighbors in the area expressed their concerns over the increase in traffic that this size project could generate on what is already a busy stretch of Route 20 and that given where the entrance and exit to the new development is planned would make it extremely difficult for anyone on either side of Route 20 to turn on the roadway. Several residents stated they feared that drivers, frustrated with the construction and the finished project would force drivers to use side streets to get around

a potential traffic jam increasing traffic in quieter, smaller neighborhoods.

“Traffic is going to be horrendous,” said Cindy Zomar, a former City Councilor who lives on Dean Road.

Zomar said she had no vested interested in the project other than that “it’s just a

Resident Mary Bovaconti told the Council she had initiated an online petition that currently has over 1,000 signatures and one of her biggest concerns in the environmental impact on the property. She said she has lived in the city her entire life and used to ride horses on the McGee property and is most bothered because “the city doesn’t need this.”

This kind of development, Bovaconti believes, will among other things, unfairly displace the wild animals including deer and coyotes forcing them into more populated areas nearby.

The Council voted to send the matter back to the Urban Affairs Committee for further discussion.

Hudson artist has no time for regrets

HUDSON - Some painters are inspired to paint things they see. Other painters, such as Ron Tango, 56, finds inspiration within.

“My muse is life’s experiences, travails with people, emotions, passion, love, sorrow and more,” said Tango. “I’m a union carpenter by trade, but a full-time artist in my heart.”

With encouragement from his twin brother, who also paints, and inspired by the world’s masterpiece paintings, Tango took up acrylic painting about 10 years ago. His path to the creative life was driven by his own desire; he had no formal art education and a difficult childhood.

“Truthfully, I kind of raised myself,” said Tango.

A native of Massachusetts, he grew up in Dorchester and Newton.

“Two different worlds,” said Tango, “but both important, and both had positive influences on my life. I wouldn’t trade

Art returned to his life indirectly while attending Wentworth Institute in Boston, where he took construction management courses.

“When I could, you’d find me at the Museum of Fine Arts,” said Tango. “I love art.”

He was inspired by such masters as Gustav Klimt, Johannes Vermeer and Leonardo da Vinci. Tango also learned about the great art periods and bears them in mind in his own work.

An early-in-life decision not to pursue art studies did not deter Tango to pursue painting when he was older.

“I think that was the worst advice I was given about art from myself!” he said. “It was what I really enjoyed, but I didn’t want to be a starving artist.”

Tango has no regrets, however.

“Regret is no friend,” he said.

Luckily, he never forgot the

encouragement from a high school art instructor.

“I told her - regarding art assignments - that producing art requires a desire or want to do so, for it to be at its best. She agreed with my new-found philosophy and adjusted my assignments. I never forgot it.”

He seemed to have left art behind after high school; he went on to a career, marriage and a family. An important part of his life is his wife and his son, 32, disabled from a rare illness.

Grafton Girl Scout’s project aims to remind that ‘You Are Not Alone!’

By Abbey Basile Contributing Writer GRAFTON - On Saturday, August 15, Triniti Petruzzelli, a 16-year-old Girl Scout from Grafton, will be hosting an event entitled “You Are Not Alone!”. The event, which will take place from 12 -2 p.m. at the Grafton Lions Club, 68 Brigham Hill Road, aims to help the community cope with issues regarding mental health. .

According to Petruzelli, the event will have many different informational tables, and will feature essential oils, as well as activities such as yoga and meditation. A therapist will also be present at the event in order to describe the experience of being at a facility that treats mental illnesses and to discuss medications and other coping mechanisms.

Petruzzelli will also have on display a poster project that she coordinated.

“These are posters that people have made anonymously about their journey through mental health,” she noted.

The “Anchor Project” is another key component of the function. Petruzzelli explained that this is an organization which provides boxes full of “inspiring things,” like posters, wristbands, and pins with quotations on them.

Some paintings contain riddles and have significant meanings to me.” Tango is also an accomplished crafter and builds one-of-a-kind bird houses, all out of recycled exotic hardwoods.

80 community service hours, and create a project that is sustainable beyond her Girl Scout years. Petruzzelli plans to sustain her project through one of her two mentors, who works in family services in Shrewsbury.

When asked about the overarching goal of her project, Petruzzelli said, “My overall goal is to really show people that they’re not alone when they’re going through [a dif-

ficult time]. It might not be their family that they have to go through to talk to, but there is always someone who has gone through something similar who is there to help.”

College graduate from Hudson embarks on life and faith adventures

By Peg Lopata Contributing writer HUDSON – Though Kaley Infantino, 22, hasn’t moved much – she has lived in the same house in Hudson since she was born – she’s always up for an adventure.

“I love grabbing some friends and going on an adventure,” she said. “It could be anything from going on a road trip, flying somewhere for a getaway, taking a long walk, trying new things, cooking or baking fun foods, or having a game night.”

Her sense of adventure makes her perfect for her job as manager at PuzzlEscape, Hudson, which provides mini-

adventures for their customers.

PuzzlEscape, an “escape room business” is like an amusement park with many funhouse rooms, each with

a theme. But instead of just dashing here and there to get out, these rooms are filled with puzzles and riddles that customers solve to escape a room.

Infantino manages bookings and staff, trainings, answers customer questions, helps with party planning and more.

She’s dedicated to making sure customers have fun.

“In my opinion, making it fun and engaging can really make or break your experience…,” said Infantino, “which is why we do what we can to make sure every customer has a great experience.

Selectmen move forward with forming diversity committee

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – The Board of Selectmen made progress on forming a committee on diversity, equity and inclusion at their July 21 meeting. Originally scheduled for their July 14 meeting, the board tabled the discussion so they could devote more time on this important initiative.

Chair Beth Casavant put together a draft to begin discussion of the committee’s composition and its charge.

“Obviously, we want to get a very diverse population because that’s a lot of what this study is about,” said Selectman Maurice DePalo.

He suggested that the charge of the committee could involve engaging with the community in interviews and information

surveys, working to identify race based disparities and issues around inclusion, reaching out to local agencies to gather information, creating a report identifying current practices and disparities, and making recommendations to bring back to the selectmen for their consideration.

“I agree with Mr. DePalo,” remarked Selectman John Samia. “I think we need to understand where we are. I do believe that we need to analyze what we do and I think we need to know based on recommendations through this task force where we desire to go….I think this will play a large role in enabling all residents to thrive and will inform how we move forward with long-term goals.”

Added Casavant: “I think that a committee like this could

offer a safe space for discussions to happen. I think it is important that this committee is looking at what we do in Shrewsbury through the lens of relevant research and best practices that are happening in our neighboring communities but also at the state level and beyond.”

A motion was made by Selectman Jim Kane that the board solicit between 20 and 30 residents to participate in the committee and report their findings within a 12-month period.

He was adamant that the board be the appointing body of this committee.

Selectman John Lebeaux agreed and that there should be firm requirements that the committee must adhere to.

The board voted unanimously in favor.

Infantino recently graduated with a degree in business management with a concentration in entrepreneurship and a minor in marketing at Framingham State University, but her learning and personal growth continues.

Kaley Infantino “Every summer my church hosts Vacation Bible School for kids,” she noted. “It’s one of my favorite weeks of the summer because I love working with kids. I love seeing them creating friendships and getting excited to learn about God.” Infantino also participates in missions with a group called Overland Missions in Florida.

During the summer of 2019, Infantino went on a mission for a week in Africa and six weeks in Asia.

Overland Missions brought two inspiring people into Infantino’s life, who were mentors during some challenging

times when she was in high school.

“They introduced me to Overland Missions and really opened my eyes to what is possible with God,” she said.

“They inspire me is because they truly care about every individual they meet and do everything they possibly can to help those around them. It is so clear they walk with the love and joy of Christ and it inspires me to want to do the same.”

Like many young adults, Infantino is trying to figure out what she wants for the rest of her life.

“I’ve been working on silencing other people’s voices in my head and listening to my own more,” she said. “I really want to live my life like Jesus lived his. I want to show love and compassion to everyone around me.”

Whether it’s being a responsible leader for kids, making customers happy, or sharing her faith, Infantino’s life is certain to be full of adventure.

Trinity Church serves community hot meals NORTHBOROUGH - Since June 24, a drive-through Community Meal has been offered in the parking lot of Trinity Church of Northborough, 23 Main St., every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Before COVID-19, meals were offered every Wednesday since its inception in January 1996 to anybody in need of a nutritious meal, or looking for community. The organization is now trying to fill its void, in a safe and socially distanced manner. The meals are purchased from local restaurants

and handed out, along with water and dessert, to anyone who comes. This is a concerted effort between Trinity Church, Northborough Junior Woman’s Club, the Northborough Food Pantry and many other local faith communities, community organizations, and individuals who volunteer their time and donate toward this effort.

Baker announces strict travel order

Travel form must be filled out by most entering state; eight states exempted REGION – Governor Charlie Baker has announced that effective Saturday, Aug. 1, all travelers entering the commonwealth, including both out of state residents and Massachusetts residents returning home, will be required to comply with a new travel order. The travel order and other information is available at www.mass.gov/ MAtraveler.

Here is the press release from Baker’s office – Travel Order: Starting Aug. 1, all visitors and Massachusetts residents returning home, including students returning to campuses for the fall semester, must fill out a “Massachusetts Travel Form” and quarantine for 14 days unless they are coming from a COVID-19 lower risk

state or they can produce a negative COVID-19 test result administered no more than 72 hours prior to arriving in Massachusetts, or they are included in one of the other, limited exemptions.

Individuals who get a test must remain in quarantine until they receive their negative test results. Failure to comply may result in a $500 fine per day.

Travelers are exempt from this requirement if they are coming from a state that has been designated by the Department of Public Health as a lower risk COVID-19 state or fall into another narrow exemption category.

Based on current public health data, those lower risk states will include: New York,

New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and

Hawaii.

Traveler exemptions include people passing through the state, people commuting across state lines for work, people traveling to Massachusetts for medical treatment, people complying with military orders, or people traveling to work in federally designated critical infrastructure sectors (essential services).

Prior to travel, people should visit www.mass.gov/ MAtraveler to fill out the “Massachusetts Travel Form” or text “MATraveler” to 888777.

The list of lower risk states

is subject to change based on public health data, and states may be added or taken off the list at any time.

The administration also

announced updates to the commonwealth’s COVID-19 Mandatory Safety Standards for Workplaces to incorporate the requirements of the travel order. This included sector-specific updates for lodging, higher education, office spaces and other industry sectors.

Updated guidance: The Administration updated guidance for lodging, offices, manufacturing, construction, labs, performance venues and indoor and outdoor events relative to the travel order. In addition, lodging operators are required to notify guests about this new travel order.

Employers are strongly discouraged from allowing business-related travel to destinations other than those appearing on the list of COVID-19 lower risk states. Employers that permit employer-paid or -reimbursed travel to those states should take

measures to ensure employees comply with this order.

Employers are also urged to strongly discourage their employees from taking leisure travel to destinations not included on the list of COVID-19 lower-risk states.

All travelers and residents are required to continue to follow the Administration’s order that requires face coverings, and practice good hygiene, social distancing and regular hand washing. People should not travel to Massachusetts if they have symptoms of COVID-19. Travelers will be informed of this order and new travel guidance by airlines, passenger rail corporations, bus companies and some major travel agents when booking trips and before arrival in Massachusetts.

Shrewsbury seeks member for Sewer Commission SHREWSBURY - Town Manager Kevin Mizikar is seeking a qualified person interested in serving on the Board of Sewer Commissioners to fill an unexpired term set to expire on June 30, 2021.

The Board of Sewer Commissioners is comprised of three members appointed by the Town Manager for a term of no longer than three years.

The Board of Sewer Commissioners, established under Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 41, Section 63, acts upon abatements and peti-

tions for sewerage, reviews and approves all applications for sewer extension permits, and reviews the financing of proposed construction. The Sewer Commission is also responsible for the implementation, administration, and enforcement of the storm water management by-law.

Under this by-law, the Commission will also be responsible for the development, implementation, administration, and enforcement of a storm water utility.

The Board meets on the second Monday of the month, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. The Commission acts upon abatements, petitions for sewerage connection, and financing proposed construction.

Shrewsbury Girl Scouts receive Silver Awards during unique ceremony

By Ann Marie R. Harvie SHREWSBURY – Several Shrewsbury Girl Scouts were recently honored at the annual Gold and Silver Award Ceremony held by the Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts (GSCWM).

Although troop meetings and badge work went virtual with great success during the pandemic, holding the traditionally large Girl Scout gathering presented a problem. The solution not only made this important ceremony happen, it took the event to a whole new level.

On June 18, the Northfield Drive-in, in Hinsdale, N.H., family and friends watched their girls receive their awards - the highest awards in the organization - on the big screen from the safety of their cars.

Pattie Hallberg, CEO, and Joan Bertrand, president and chair of GSCWM, presided over the ceremony.

“I hope you know how special you all are,” Hallberg told the honorees. “You are all proven leaders. I believe that every-

“I thought it was pretty cool being able to receive our Silver Award and to see it on the big screen,” said Rachel. “I was worried we wouldn’t because of the pandemic and I’m so glad that GSCWM could make this happen for us.”

NORTHBOROUGH – Despite the pandemic, traditional summer baseball continues throughout the region. On Friday evening, July 24, Northborough and Shrewsbury battled in a Worcester County Baseball League game, a league assembled after the traditional Legion baseball session was cancelled this summer. Social distancing precautions are in place for these games, so some traditions such as the post-game handshake have been suspended.

The first pitch was thrown out by 8-year-old David Fidrych, the grandson of former Major League Baseball pitcher Mark Fidrych.

David, who also plays in the Northborough town league, warmed up with the players prior to the game.

Shrewsbury, now 10-0 on the season, easily defeated Northborough 12-1.

SHREWSBURY – The islands in the center of Shrewsbury at the junction of Main Street and Maple Avenue have always been pleasing to the eye. But this year they are extra special and it’s all because of the dedication of several members of the Shrewsbury Garden Club. The community is grateful to the Garden Club, especially now in these trying times.

“The Garden Club doesn’t know what we would have done without this group of girls that have beautified the center of town,” commented club president Gail Aslanian.

“We get so many compliments from the town residents about how beautiful it looks and these girls are responsible,” Aslanian said.

The gardens feature almost 20 different varieties of annuals, perennials and hanging baskets. Among the annuals are morning glories, petunias, succulents, dwarf sunflowers and zinnias, while the perennials include coneflowers, daylilies and asters.

s people age, sometimes enjoying a favorite pastime such as reading becomes more difficult. This may be because a vision problem or arthritis or another physical limitation makes it harder to hold a book. That’s when an audio book can step in to entertain and transport. Books take us to other worlds, cultures, and situations. They can counsel and lift our spirits. They can underscore that none of us are ever truly alone, because others have felt or experienced what we are feeling. Many libraries have audio books available for check out.

Audio books strengthen memory skills, reduce stress, and even improve sleep. In addition, they give us something to think and talk about.

Whether it’s poetry or prose, fiction or nonfiction, research indicates that avid readers can experience many health benefits. Frequent readers are less likely to make sudden, impulsive decisions, and more likely to think before they react. This often helps people be more open to change and new situations in life, and thereby experience less anxiety over any uncertainty.

Why Do I Need a Power of Attorney?

By Lauren E. Miller, Esq., Elder Law attorney at Fletcher Tilton PC A power of attorney is a legal document in which you can designate a person to make financial decisions for you. Unlike a will (which takes effect only after your death), the authority under a power of attorney is valid only while you are alive.

If you start to need help managing finances, it can be helpful to designate a trusted family member, friend, or professional as a power of attorney before you become incapacitated. For example, the person with a power of attorney can speak with or request documents from financial institutions, help complete applications for public benefits, or sign checks to pay bills.

Be cognizant that this person can also enter into transactions on your behalf such as selling your house or moving funds from your accounts.

Health Care

Instead of executing a power of attorney, some seniors opt to add one of their children to their bank accounts as a joint owner. This can have unintended consequences. Upon the parent’s death, confusion can follow as to whether the account funds were meant to be split equally among all the children or left only to the child who was made joint owner. Similarly, adding a child to a real estate deed can have serious tax implications upon a later sale of the property, result in the parent becoming ineligible for Medicaid benefits, or affect the eligibility of children or grandchildren for need-based student financial aid. An experienced elder law attorney can draft the power of attorney document to address the unique challenges faced by elders and their families.

The staff will spend Friday afternoons planning, assessing, and working on professional development. Mayer said teaching remotely is a significant shift in instructional delivery, and studies show students do less well in an online environment. Therefore, a shift in pedagogical approach and a need for collaboration is

needed to help faculty adjust.

For those who cannot send their students to school due to health issues, instruction will be provided through the Westborough Standalone Remote Learning Program (WSRLP), although the district is still mulling how to do that. One option is staffing this model with teachers who will not be returning to in-person teaching, another option is providing online curriculum and learning platform created by a

third party, and another option is creating a shared program with surrounding towns utilizing resources and teachers who won’t be returning to the classroom.

Mayer also said that although there is a possibility all learning will move back to fully remote if the coronavirus numbers spike up again, it was important to at least start the year somewhat on campus.

he wasteland outdoors, with creatures that no longer look like humans but instead greedy, scared, and bitter paper and rubber monsters. A boy was going to the balmy pleasant beaches of Maine and the sizzling climate of Florida that felt so satisfying in a tropical pool. He was beyond cloud nine and thought that nothing was going to go wrong.

He was going to try out for soccer and try to run like Eric Richard the wind for three miles instead of just one whenever he went for a jog with his puppy. He was as ecstatic as a clam. The boy did not notice, think about, or care about the approaching apocalypse. All he wanted to do was spend his time worry free in school.

Then the doors locked him in, the disgusting, dirty, disease filled doorknob that would

not unlock. Outside the house it was a desolate portrait. We all were mice surrounded by hungry cats thanks to this “doorknob” that slowly “rusted”. It started as barely noticeable on the rim of the “door” but then it cultivated together and expanded. The “doorknob” had needles on it begging us not to touch it, but the possibility of freedom made some try open it. These people ended up jamming this knob to the point that it would not even twist and the doorknob laughed at those who tried to leave.

Why? Why did this covid outburst come for the boy? Why did this happen now? Why? Why? Why? The world said that we must “flatten this curve” and that “we have this under control” but the boy knew this was not true and that the internet was as trustworthy as a mischievous fox. Then the doorknob said to the boy that this year and the next year and the year after that would be in this trapped world. The boy looked at himself and then… he went to see his friends, classmates, and relatives. He talked with them and played games with others.

Bock encouraged people to contact administration with questions and concerns, but suggested people read the report and take a 24-hour breath to really digest it first.

She said administration is also considering virtual coffee and conversation-themed chats to provide an opportunity to ask questions.

Shrewsbury art students visit with artists virtually via Zoom

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – One might not think that a Zoom call could be classified as personal but some art students at Shrewsbury High School (SHS) thought otherwise when they were treated to an up-close look into the world of four visiting artists in a series of virtual visits. There were unexpected benefits.

The visits were arranged by visual arts teacher Shari Fox who was faced with a dilemma when schools shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Fox explained that prior to the pandemic she had received a grant from the Shrewsbury Alumni Association to bring two visiting artists, each for a full-day, to SHS. Fox said in a separate Zoom call: “When school was canceled and we started remote learning, I reached out to the Alumni Association, to see if I could utilize the grant in a new way.”

Buono, from Beal School, was thrilled to participate.

“It was really neat to see how nice this is for a community of artists,” she said. “I know as an artist and an art educator that I am learning how important it is to develop for myself a community but even more so for the students.”

“If we have to do things remotely this coming school year, now Shari has so many more options,” Williams said.

“Even when we are back at school maybe we can sometimes still do a virtual artist and even have them projected at school,” Cobb said.

When asked for their reactions, the students were overwhelmingly positive.

Briana said that it was inspiring and that she really liked seeing the artwork and where it was made. She also appreciated the artists sharing their

own struggles.

Kya noted that they could see up close the process the artists used while Ethan was amazed by all the equipment that the artists employed.

He referenced the heating element that Busso used to melt the wax for her encaustic paintings.

Busso shared that people often don’t really understand when she verbally describes what encaustic painting is. In her session she gave a demonstration to better explain.

She said she would gladly welcome a field trip of students to her studio when it is safe to do so. .

Gayatri was so inspired by Busso and has begun to paint with oil.

“I would just like to thank Shari for writing these grants…

It’s a lot of work,” Cobb commented.

“I hope that I somehow one day get to that point,” Kya said, in reference to Eola Jane’s success.

And Ethan noted, “It’s a great experience to learn about other artists and it can also help people those aspiring to be artists in the future.”

For Westborough student, publication in major scientific journal is latest accolade

By Morgan Hume Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Most high schoolers spend their junior year shopping for prom attire and stressing about homework assignments. Adway Wadekar spent his time getting a study published in a scientific journal.

Although he just wrapped up his junior year at Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury, he is not the typical teenager.

“Almost everything about me is different,” said Wadekar, who is a resident of Westborough.

Wadekar spends his free time diving into research projects on different topics, like drug disorders in young people.

He recently published a study in a major scientific journal, Drug and Alcohol Dependence which looks into if high school students’ addiction to drugs, among many factors, has a connection to their likelihood of developing addictions in adult life. While people his age may have assistance from a principal investigator or a mentor in their research, Wadekar is the sole author of the self-directed study. (www.sciencedirect. com/science/article/abs/pii/ S0376871620300041) “It’s interesting to study it because I’m the one that’s affected by it,” he said about the project. “My own friends and people that I associate with on a day-to-day basis are the ones who are being affected by drugs, so it’s personal.”

“I want to find a way to break that gap between the general public and people who are creating new knowledge by doing research,” he said.

He was also accepted this year into the New England High School Journalism Collaborative Summer Workshop, where he wrote about first amendment issues and disparities in education in age of the coronavirus.

process of his study. Both his parents have earned doctoral degrees and Wadekar hopes to earn one someday himself in a quantitative social science, perhaps economics.

“The sacrifices they’ve made for the opportunities that I’ve been able to pursue, it’s just incredible,” said Wadekar. “I owe everything to them.”

With all this experience, Wadekar has many options for his future, but he sees himself in an academic setting so he can continue research projects.

His mother is a professor at University of Connecticut and he would like to follow a similar path.

For now, he has another year of high school left to finish, which he hopes to enjoy. His college plans are still undecided, but he knows he has plenty of time to plan for the future. And wherever this self-described “atypical” young man goes, he is sure to find continued success.

Spofford elected as president-elect of Worcester County Bar Association REGION - Geoffrey E. Spofford of Westborough has been elected to serve as presidentelect of the Worcester County Bar Association at its annual meeting held on June 9, 2020.

He is a partner in the Wo rc e s t e r law firm of Lian Zarrow.

He has practiced law in Geoffrey Spofford the Worcester area since 1989, starting as an associate with the law firm of Gould & Ettenberg before joining Lian, Zarrow in 1995.

Throughout his career, his practice has focused on the representation of individuals and families affected by serious injuries, as well as criminal defense and general civil litigation. He has devoted countless hours to both the Worcester County and Massachusetts Bar Associations, being involved in their community based programs. He has been recognized with the WCBA President’s Award in 1993 and 1997 and with the MBA Community Service award in 2019.

Spofford will take over as President of the 1000 member association from Terry McLaughlin in September 2021.

McLaughlin becomes president of the association on September 1, 2020.

William J. Gulbicki Jr., 68

HUDSON - Roland “Rolly” J. Chartrand, 82, of Hudson, passed away unexpectedly July 17, 2020 at Emerson Hospital. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Lilith “Pat” E. (Brown) Chartrand.

He is also survived by his four children, Michael E. Chartrand and his wife Susan of Hudson, Lynn A. Trudel of Hudson, Peter J. Chartrand and his wife Jane of Hudson, and Tracy L. Chartrand of Hudson; a brother, George Chartrand and his wife Patricia of Florida; a sister, Dorothy “Dot” Shepheard of Florida; nine grandchildren, Nathaniel Chartrand, Kaeleigh Hawes and her husband Nicholas, Zachary Chartrand, Michael Chartrand, Gabriel Chartrand, Danielle Trudel, Amanda Trudel, Michael Trudel Jr. and Lucy O’Hearn; and one greatgrandchild, Molly Jean Hawes.

His funeral service was held July 25 at Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home of Hudson, with a procession to Forestvale Cemetery for interment.

AUBURN - William J. “Bill” “Mr. B.G.” Gulbicki Jr., 68, Auburn resident and longtime Shrewsbury resident, passed away peacefully July 11, 2020 in the comfort of his home, with his family at his side.

Bill is survived by his wife, Patricia A. (Wagner) Gulbicki of Auburn; his children, William J. Gulbicki III and his fiancé Meghan Casagranda of Auburn, and Melissa Gulbicki of Holden; his grandchildren, Lilliana Gulbicki, Ethan Casagranda, and Riley Casagranda; his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” (Gulbicki) Harrington of Worcester; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held privately for Mr. Gulbicki’s family. The Britton-Wallace Funeral Home of Auburn is assisting with arrangements.

A graveside committal service was held July 27 at St. Luke’s Cemetery of Westborough. A memorial Mass will be planned for a future date. The Pickering and Son Westborough Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Donald S. Sherman, 65 NORTH ANDOVER - Donald S. Sherman, 65, died July 18, 2020 after a short illness. He was surrounded by his family as he left this world. He was the husband of the late Patricia (Driscoll) Sherman, who died in 2009. They were married for 19 years. He was born in Waltham the son of Julia (Simpson) Sherman of Marlborough and the late Richard A. Sherman.

Besides his mother, he is survived by three sisters, Melissa Pica and her husband Gregory of Milford, Nancy Skar and her husband Paul of Londonderry, N.H., and Janet Dilling and her husband Duane of Marlborough, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Petey, whom he rescued just last year.

A graveside service was held July 22 at Evergreen Cemetery of Marlborough. The Short & Rowe Funeral Home of Marlborough assisted with arrangements.

Raymond F. Kirally Sr., 88 NORTHBOROUGH - Raymond F. Kirally Sr., 88, a longtime Northborough resident and proud U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, passed away peacefully July 20, 2020. Raymond was born in East Lyme, Conn. and grew up in Manchester, Conn.

Raymond is survived by one son, Raymond F. Kirally Jr., his wife Theresa, and two granddaughters, Shea and Amber, all of Southborough. His wife, Jane W. (Bailey) Kirally, passed away in 2018.

His funeral service was held July 24 at Hays Funeral Home of Northborough, followed by burial with military honors at Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Winchendon.

Dorothy F. Kenary, 90 SHREWSBURY - Dorothy F. “Dottie” (Senecal) Kenary, 90, lifelong Shrewsbury resident, passed away peacefully July 19, 2020. Her beloved husband of 55 years, Roy V. Kenary, predeceased her in 2006.

Dottie is survived by her two daughters, Ann M. Kenary and her partner James Dunn of Oxford and Arlene T. Strand and her husband Peter of Spencer; five grandchildren, Matthew, Heidi, Michelle, Marie, and Lisa; four great-grandchildren, Katherine, Thomas, Emerson, and Miles; her sister, Marie Senecal; and many dear friends whom she held close to her heart. In addition to her parents, Alfred C. and Mary M. (Keeley) Senecal, and husband, Dottie was also predeceased by her son, Thomas A. Kenary, who passed in 1976, and her two brothers, Alfred and Robert Senecal.

Her funeral Mass and burial will be held privately for her family. The Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Lillian M. Abruzzise. 95 SHREWSBURY - Lillian M. (Enman) Abruzzise passed away peacefully July 12, 2020 in the Christopher House, Worcester.

She was 95 years old. Lillian was born in Worcester and raised in Westborough, one of four children to the late Edison Mark Thomas and Edith Lillian (Rich) Enman.

Surviving Lillian are her five children, Carla Jefferson, Gregory Reheuser, Pamela Wells, Debra Phillips and Jonathan Reheuser; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Barbara Handlin and Shirley Anderson; a brother, Richard Enman; and

her long-time companion of 15 years with whom she made her home and watched the Red Sox with, Patrick Moquin.

Services at this time are private for the family. Arrangements are under the care of Hays Funeral Home of Northborough.

Maurice P. Gionfriddo, 89 SHREWSBURY - M a u r i ce P. Gionfriddo, 89, of Shrewsbury and a former longtime Westborough resident, passed away peacefully July 18, 2020 at his residence. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Joan (Powers) Gionfriddo. He was also predeceased by his second wife, Marilyn (Varisco) Gionfriddo.

He is survived by his two daughters, Marianne Sullivan and her husband Thomas of Waban and Linda Maio and her husband Philip of Auburn; two grandchildren, Jessica and Michael Maio, both of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also predeceased by his siblings, Evelyn Debaste and Michael Gionfriddo.

His funeral service was held July 25 at the Pickering and Son Westborough Funeral Home, followed by burial with Military Honors at St. Luke’s Cemetery.

John F. McDonald, 79 SHREWSBURY - John Francis McDonald, of Shrewsbury, died July 21, 2020 after a battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 2, 1941 in Worcester to John D. and Mabel E. (Hennessey) McDonald.

He leaves behind his wife of nearly 46 years, Leona (David) McDonald; his three daughters, Sheila and her husband Michael Lipschultz, Cynthia and her husband Jeremy Sacco, and Brenda and her husband John Salvi; his son, Brian; and his seven grandchildren, Michael, Gabriel, Jacob, Allison, Nathaniel, Perrin, and Owen.

A Mass of Christian burial was held July 28 at St. Mary’s Church of Shrewsbury, followed by burial at Mountain View Cemetery. Chiampa Funeral Home of Shrewsbury assisted with arrangements.
