SHREWSBURY – “I’ve had a full life,” reflected Doris Paolini, lifelong resident of Shrewsbury who marked her 100th birthday Aug. 25.

Paolini is still very sharp and social with a quick wit and great memory. She recently enjoyed the company of her daughter Nancy and son-in-law Joe at Southgate where she resides.

Because of current restrictions, she will not be able to have a party. As such, the mother of three and “Meme” to eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, will receive visits, two family members at a time, throughout the week.

COMMUNITYNEWS Area communities plan limited Sept. 11 commemorations this year

By Brett Peruzzi Contributing Writer REGION - On the 19th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that claimed nearly 3000 lives, and contributed to countless more after that day, another national crisis will affect how the day is commemorated this year in some local communities.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the state guidelines on crowd sizes and social distancing, several communities have decided to limit the scope of their ceremonies.

“We will not be inviting the public this year,” said Shrewsbury Fire Chief James Vuona.

“We will only have a quiet, respectful fire department staff observation at headquarters.

We will follow the standard fire service observation protocol

we use every year.”

“For the last few years, our 9/11 commemorations have been very low key,” said Thomas Moses, executive assistant for Hudson.

“They have taken place at fire headquarters with staff only. This year they will be even more subdued, without off-duty firefighters attending,” he explained. “The hope is that we can do something more public in 2021, the 20th anniversary.”

The city of Marlborough has decided to significantly change its commemoration.

“In past years a former city councilor, Rob Seymour, put together a flag display at the iconic Walker Building front lawn that sits on a hill,” said Trish Bernard, assistant to Mayor Arthur Vigeant. There, volunteers placed three thou-

“There was a ceremony tied into CrossFit, with athletes doing a workout around the perimeter of the flags and there were a few speakers. Sadly this event will not take place this

year but we will light the front of the building up at night with red, white and blue lights.”

Bernard noted that the decision to change the commemoration is both due to the pandemic and recent vandalism that’s occurred in sur-

rounding communities as well as Marlborough.

In Northborough, it’s business as usual this year for the fire department’s own annual acknowledgment of September 11.

“The fire department usually does a small ceremony at the station, but it will not be affected by the pandemic,” said Fire Chief David Parenti.

Southborough’s plans were still evolving because of the public health situation.

“We will be coordinating the level of commemoration with the Southborough police department based on current pandemic guidance from the state,” said Fire Chief Steven Achilles.

Casavant to serve as selectman delegate on new diversity task force

Reading, writing and reality REGION – As the summer of 2020 winds down, families are facing a new reality – a very different type of school year. Most local school districts are planning for a hybrid mix of in-person and remote learning, which certainly adds pressure to parents who will have to keep track of who is supposed to be where each day, all the while juggling their own work loads. And of course, adding even more stress, is the unknown answer at this time to the question - what will the fall look like, pandemic-wise?

SHREWSBURY – The Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen discussed the need to appoint one of their own to the newly created Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force at its Aug. 25 meeting.

They recently issued a call for applicants which are being compiled by the Town Manager’s Office.

Board Chair Beth Casavant shared that there were already quite a few who have expressed an interest in serving.

“Before we go any further, I would just like to say that I am very interested in serving in this role as our delegate from this board,” she remarked. “But of course, I respect that this was something that Mr. [John] Lebeaux had brought before the board and would want to make sure that the entire board was comfortable. I didn’t want to step on any toes, but I do want to express my interest.”

“I claim no ownership to this at all. I honestly don’t know if my work schedule would allow me to properly do what I needed to do on this,” replied Lebeaux.

Selectman Maurice DePalo said he thought she would make an excellent delegate and made a motion to appoint her. This was seconded and unanimously approved.

Casavant thanked her colleagues, noting that she has been educating herself on the issues not only in Shrewsbury but in the broader community.

Marlborough’s women municipal leaders honored on 100th anniversary of 19th Amendment

By Bonnie Adams Managing Editor MARLBOROUGH – As the country commemorated the historic 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote, the city of Marlborough held a moving ceremony Aug. 26 outside of City Hall to honor its women municipal leaders. As they did so, the speakers on the program noted that there is still much work to be done, in the areas of achieving equal pay, fighting sexism and ensuring that all women are treated equally and fairly, including women of color.

The event was organized by the three current women City Councilors – Laura Wagner, Ward 1 and Kathleen D.

Invited guests included women who have served on the City Council, Marlborough School Committee and Assabet Valley School Committee.

After a greeting and proclamation from Mayor Arthur Vigeant, U.S. Congresswoman Lori Trahan addressed the gathering.

Although there are more opportunities now for women than ever before, Trahan said, women still only make up 23 percent of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Equalrepresentationisjustthefirsthurdle,”shesaid.“Butsometimes we are stillnot taken seriously or worse,our ideas are dismissed or stolen.”

When she was elected last fall, at age 24, Perlman was the youngest person ever elected to serve on the City Council.

“I am always reminded of the women who came before me,” she said.

One of those women, she noted, was Crystal Eastman, who was born in Marlborough in 1881 and lived there for several years before her family moved to New York, Eastman was a lawyer, author and an important leader in the fight for women’s suffrage. Among her many other accomplishments was co-founding the American Civil Liberties Union.

Robey spoke of another pioneer in women’s suffrage, Jane Cunningham Croly, who was a syndicated columnist who went by the pseudonym, “Jennie June”. She was a founder of the Sorosis club for women in New York, later expanding it to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, and also founded the Woman’s Press Club of New York City.

Echoing the sentiment of the morning, Wagner noted that it was important to remember that “no community or state can thrive when only some people are valued.”

Citing a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. ‘s “Letter from the Birmingham jail,” she added, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Geoff Kelly named Applefest Grand Marshal NORTHBOROUGH - In March, when COVID-19 restrictions were put into effect, many businesses closed or experienced a dramatic change in their normal operations. Businesses in the food industry were especially hit hard. Sir Loin Catering owner Geoff Kelly didn’t think twice about how to use his excess inventory to offer his Corona-Culinary Menu for free to help those also impacted by the pandemic.

The 2020 Applefest Committee has announced that Kelly has been named grand marshal for his generous spirit and community support.

“The Committee could not think of a better candidate,” said Applefest Chairman Michelle Gillespie. “During the height of the pandemic, when everyone stayed home, Geoff stepped up and cooked for many weeks feeding the residents in our community who needed healthy, gourmet meals. In these tough times, the true measure of

one’s character is shown. Geoff has shown time and time again he is a thoughtful individual who cares deeply for this community.”

Kelly provided meals twice a week for two months and impacted over 15,000 people including hospital staff and elderly individuals who couldn’t leave their homes. He was able to continue the program because of the community support and monetary donations.

He noted that someone even sold handmade masks and donated the proceeds toward the effort, while another left painted rocks with the words “thank you” on them.

“I am blown away and

humbled to be named grand marshal,” said Kelly. “I didn’t see it coming.”

Chefs that Kelly had worked with in the past, who also were temporarily out of work, volunteered their time to prepare and package meals. Other community members offered to help with delivery or donated gas cards to offset the cost.

“It was a huge team effort,” he said. “There was no stress in the kitchen; it was great comradery and it was fun to come up with menus twice a week. Everyone stepped up and it couldn’t have continued without the support from the town. People are so beautiful.”

He said it was heartwarming to see the look of gratitude on the faces of those receiving meals.

Kelly is no stranger to Northborough - he was raised here and returned to town later as an adult. This year he celebrates 20 years of Sir Loin Catering; the last eight of them have been in Northborough.

A graduate of Johnson & Wales University, he has been cooking all of his life and has

extensive experience in the restaurant industry. Sir Loin Catering offers a state-of-the art mobile kitchen as he prefers to cook on site so the food is as fresh as possible.

Some of his favorites include smoked meats, pig roasts, and sirloin tips.

Kelly has adapted his catering business to be COVID friendly. Party sizes are smaller and there are more in backyards instead of at venues. His food truck is also available for onsite taco or grilling parties and makes it easy for proper social distancing.

He will also be initiating a new program to assist the remote learning models for school. Healthy sandwiches, protein bars, and snacks will be an alternative to school lunches and will have a convenient way to order on line.

A new venture for Kelly is PlanIt Eats, a grab and go meal choice, which offers fresh, never frozen gluten free, sugar free and dairy free meals prepared in a trusted kitchen.

Addiction Referral Center partners with Tri County United Way to support school children MARLBOROUGH - The Addiction Referral Center (ARC) in Marlborough and Tri County United Way recently joined forces to provide school backpacks to area children.

The ARC Executive Director Kelly McCausland said, “We are very grateful to the Tri County United Way for providing back to school backpacks to our families. The children are so excited and the parents are thankful.”

Each backpack is filled with age- appropriate learning supplies. The ARC distributed over 25 backpacks to children in need.

“Substance use disorder affects all family members and we are delighted to be a part of setting children up for success for the school year,” McCausland said.

The Addiction Referral Center has a 45-year history as a nonprofit in Marlborough, helping people who suffer with substance use disorder and family members and loved ones. The ARC disrupts the cycle of addiction and offers support through education, referral services, recovery coaching, and peer support groups and meetings.

MARLBOROUGH - Alison Matthew, president of Temple Emanuel’s congregation, made the decision over five months ago to continue with the religious school remotely. While other programming needed to be figured out, the first attempt for a Friday night virtual Shabbat service was a big success. Then came a Zoom Seder, board meeting, Yom HaShoa Holocaust Remembrance Day, Adult Education programs, guest speakers, concerts and more.

“Frankie Snyder, an archeologist who lives in Israel, did two Zoom presentations about the ancient First and Second temples in Israel,” Matthew noted. “…It was terrific! Jewish American musician Joe Buchanan gave a concert that many enjoyed.”

For many congregants, there is truly a sense of isolation and just being able to connect, even on the computer, has been a lifeline for many. For those who have moved away or are not able to travel to the synagogue, the virtual programming has allowed for them to participate remotely.

“Doing virtual Shabbat and High Holiday services have allowed one of the temple members who is in the military and now stationed in Honduras to participate on Zoom. This connection to home has been quite meaningful for her,” Matthew said. “We have seen congregants that we have not seen in a while.”

Rosh Hashanah is Friday-Sunday, Sept 18-20 and Yom Kippur is Sunday-Monday, Sept. 27-28.

Westborough Selectmen consider new staffing recommendations

By Jennifer L. Grybowski Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Westborough Town Manager Kristi Williams addressed the Board of Selectman Aug. 26 regarding staffing study implementation recommendations.

Selectman Ian Johnson said he was excited about the plan.

“We are putting into action lots of improvements that can be made to how we operate and how we serve our residents,” he said.

Selectman Sayed Hashmi urged caution when considering the plan, citing the state’s high unemployment rate.

“Every dollar we spend we need to be cognizant of the instability of so many of our residents living through these times,” he said.

Williams had four major recommendations.

The first was the creation of a consolidated Community Development Department (CDD).

This would include the building, planning, conservation, economic developments, all supervised by a community development director. She said a CDD would streamline customer service, help to effectively handle large-scale developments, provide a clear structure for coordinating work and consolidate functions. She recommended elevating Building Commissioner Fred Lonardo to the director position. She noted Town Planner Jim Robbins would still report to the Planning Board per the town charter, but the other departments would report to Lonardo instead of the town manager. She also noted that the relationship between staff and the boards and committees would not change.

The second recommendation was in regard to public information, to create a plan of communication with the community and increase the hours of the geographic information systems (GIS) administrator.

“This is something we talked about a lot recently, certainly due to the impacts of COVID,” Williams said.

Instead of creating an entirely new position, the GIS administrator would become the point of contact for IT needs related to social media and the website, implement communication processes, update the website, and monitor messaging and activity.

“I think this is an affordable way to approach [the need for a] public information officer by

expanding the current role,” Vice Chair Allen Edinberg said.

The third recommendation was the creation of a human resources coordinator position.

Williams said she was in support of this recommendation, but that she was considering the current vacant position in the Treasurer/Collector’s Office to fill that need. She said when the position became vacant in June, payroll was pushed out

to larger departments. Keeping that process in place would allow a new human resources coordinator to focus on benefits and other issues.

“We have a big town in terms of employees and human resources is not getting any easier,” Johnson said.

The fourth recommendation was to issue an RFP for a contracted golf course manager, as the town’s contract with the

current manager is up at the end of the year and he will be retiring.

A group has been assigned to study this issue and will present their findings at the Sept. 8 meeting.

Other, future considerations include various regional opportunities, including the creation of a full time public health nurse position; designating a procurement officer in the Finance Department to potentially

share with school department; establishing a stormwater utility fund; restructuring the Finance Department to further integrate staff; adjusting Assessor’s Office staffing to meet service expectations; tackling ongoing staffing holes at the DPW; and creating an IT position to support the library and other departments.

Selectmen will continue to discuss the recommendations at their Sept. 8 meeting.

Shrewsbury FD receives grant SHREWSBURY – Fire Chief James Vuona announced that the Shrewsbury Fire Department has been awarded an approximately $34,000 grant from the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Program (CESFP).

The funds will purchase portable radio equipment for firefighters.

Firefighter Michael Borowiec wrote the successful application.

Eligible municipalities were invited to solicit up to $50,000 in total funding to benefit their police and/or fire department needs.

“Shrewsbury Fire Department is grateful for this generous grant from the Baker-Polito Administration and its support of our department,” Vuona said. “These funds will allow us to purchase new equipment and improve the communication of our firefighters as we continue to serve our community through this pandemic.”

The department hopes to use the grant to purchase and install equipment this fall.

The Baker-Polito Administration allocated more than $9.6 million in grants to more than 100 local and state public safety agencies for additional resources to further aid in preventing, preparing for and/ or responding to the coronavirus.

Lifelong Shrewsbury resident marks 100 years with week-long celebration Paolini | from page 1

Born Doris Meunier, one of eight children – seven girls and one boy, she grew up near Lake Quinsigamond. She attended Coolidge Elementary School.

“I never did go to high school because my father did not believe that girls needed to go to high school,” she remarked.

However, she eventually received her diploma.

She married Alfred Abair when she was 18, and they had had three children; Judy, Robert and Nancy. They were happily married for 35 years until his passing.

“Eleven years later I got married to a nice fella that I met at a dance. He was terrific and my children loved him,” she said. His name was Seraphino “Fifi” Paolini.

They were happy together and enjoyed music and dancing. She played the piano and he played the drums.

“We were very good to each other,” she noted.

After 23 years of marriage, Fifi passed away.

Guided by her faith, she was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes in Worcester and St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Shrewsbury.

She also has a passion for politics.

“Every four years don’t bother me because I like politics,” she said, noting that the night John F. Kennedy was elected she was up all night.

Throughout her lifetime she loved to sew and crochet and is known for her afghans.

She enjoyed fixing people’s hair and she was a skilled baker having worked in the Shrewsbury school system after the passing of her first husband.

She also worked at Massachusetts Electric (now known as National Grid) and as a weaver at Worcester Tire and Fabric.

Nancy said that her mother used to bowl with her father and was particularly good, having won many trophies.

She reminisced about the changes she has seen, particularly technological advancements, but she noted that she thinks families should make it a priority to enjoy their evening meals together.

“I’ve had a full, rich life and I don’t regret a bit of it,” Paolini said. “I think we had the best generation.”

New England Music Academy is embracing a new normal

WESTBOROUGH – New England Music Academy (NEMA) has not let the COVID-19 pandemic keep students from the fun of learning music. Quite the contrary. As soon as Gov. Charlie Baker issued the State of Emergency, they were ready to pivot to an online teaching platform. One week they were holding lessons as usual, the very next week they were fully online according to Deanna Wong, the school’s founder and executive director.

“The world was in COVID chaos. We transitioned to fully remote learning over the weekend and just kept teaching. Music lessons became this little slice of normal for all of us,” she said. “We were gathering, learning music and having fun all online. When schools and other activities were shutting down, our students could count on seeing their [NEMA] teacher each week.”

“It was wonderful to see students and teachers embrace on-line learning,” she added. “The transition to secure, customized, online learning has kept things normal during the pandemic. I am honored to be a part of such an elite team of dedicated teachers and staff that pushed through to help our students thrive in challenging times.”

Later in the spring, NEMA had formal performances and graduations – all on Zoom.

Families have been supportive of the school’s online lessons and have sent many positive emails. One parent wrote: “...We are overwhelmed with how dedicated you have been to keeping things normal...”

Students can take lessons for years and never learn to read music.,” Wong said. “We believe it shouldn’t be that way.

“We believe kindergarteners can learn the fundamentals of music theory. They can do it – we’ve proven it time and time again over 15 years,” Wong explained. “Our Beginner Music Classes teach early elementary students to read music in a fun, age- appropriate, noncompetitive way that draws them into the learning process.

MARLBOROUGH – “Creative, colorful and flexible” is how Amy Mulkerin, principal of Marlborough’s new Goodnow Brothers Elementary School, described the building’s design. She and Superintendent Michael Bergeron said they are ready to welcome 700 students in grades K – 5 on Sept. 21, using the hybrid model approved by the School Committee.

The school is named for the three Goodnow brothers, military veterans who were killed in action and are all buried in Marlborough.

Mulkerin said she and staff have given several hundred tours over the past few weeks.

The 110,000-square-foot, twofloor building with 39 classrooms uses orange as the anchor color and has color themes for each grade. K – 2 classrooms are

on the first floor and grades 3 – 5 are on the second floor.

Classrooms are outfitted with “puzzle piece” desks and tables that can be moved together or apart depending on the need. Teachers and staff were able to weigh in on classroom design, furniture, and space needs during the year.

There are large smart screens in almost every classroom and Bergeron said by the end of this school year, all schools will have this technology.

The school boasts a unique courtyard with room for outside classes and garden beds for outdoor learning. In addition, there is a large library, cafeteria/ auditorium and gym. The gym floor will feature a school mascot once the students decide on one. There are two engineering rooms for grades 3 – 5, an art room, special education rooms, Pathways Program space and OT/PT rooms.

The playground has two large connecting areas with a soft floor and climbing structures as well as low-to-the ground activities including musical instruments. The playground is flanked by trees and the reservoir in the distance.

“Teachers are so proud of the school and the kids are so excited,” Mulkerin said.

She officially started last July and spent the past year spending time at the city’s other three elementary schools, reading to students, talking to parents, and seeking input from teachers across the district.

The entryway of the building is filled with color and natural light with television monitors above the entryway to allow for daily announcements and social distancing guidelines.

WHS receives national recognition from Special Olympics MARLBOROUGH – Special Olympics Massachusetts has announced that Westborough High School, a Special Olympics Unified Champion School, is receiving National Banner recognition for its efforts to provide inclusive sports and activities for students with and without disabilities. Westborough High School is receiving this honor for meeting national standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy and respect. An award presentation will take place on a date to be determined.

Westborough High School will be amongst 15 schools to receive this distinction in Massachusetts this year, joining 26 schools previously recognized for a total of 41 National Banner Unified Champion Schools in the state. They will be presented with a banner to hang in their school and be included on a list of other schools around the country who have achieved this distinguished status.

To solve a growing overcrowding problem in the existing elementary schools, the City Council approved a $56.4 million bond to build the school approximately two years ago. The city received a $29 million grant from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) for choosing to participate in the MSBA’s Model School Program.

This program reuses the design of recently constructed schools which results in overall cost savings. The city brought on Mount Vernon Group Architects, Inc., and used the firm’s designs of schools in New Bedford and Athol as models.

Both Bergeron and Mayor Arthur Vigeant have noted that the building was finished on time and on budget.

“It feels good to see the end product for the community,” Bergeron said.

The Thomas A. Melucci Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established by Thomas and Gail Melucci as a memorial for their son, Thomas, who graduated from Saint Anselm in 1988. Mr. and Mrs. Melucci remain closely involved with the scholarship, serving on the committee that selects recipients each year.

Mr. Melucci is a former trustee of the college.

On the lacrosse field, Ward has helped the Hawks maintain their national prominence in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association national coaches’ poll. Across 33 career games on the Hilltop, Ward has scored 68 goals with 28 assists for 96 points (68-28=96). He ranks seventh all-time in career goals per game (2.06) and points per game (2.91).

Named to the Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team as a freshman, Ward is a mainstay on the league’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes and their academic achievements in the classroom.

“It’s totally crazy,” said Joan Docktor, president, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach Realtors, serving Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey.

“In all my years in residential real estate, I have never seen anything like this - multiple offers, bidding wars. One $1 million home in the Philadelphia suburbs sold in three days, after several offers, at $40,000 over the asking price.”

It is not surprising, she said, with only 1.3 months of available inventory and demand far outpacing supply, as consumers re-evaluating their lifestyles rush to leave the city for the suburbs and/ or snap up second or vacation homes.

“Especially as more people determine they can work from home, they are ready to pull up stakes and give up everything they know for a slower-paced life in a pleasant setting,” she said.

noted, driving up prices by s much as 11 percent over the year ago period.

“Buyers are paying cash, removing inspection requirements, using escalation clauses,” said Docktor. “Sellers need to rely on spreadsheets to help them sort out the offers.”

Compounding the normal demand in Arizona, noted Matt Deuitch, designated broker, DPR Realty in Scottsdale, is a surging in-migration from consumers keen to leave behind the high prices and high-octane lives in states like California, New York and New Jersey.

“People are retiring early as a result of the pandemic, or moving their families because they can,” Deuitch said. “With inventory at next to nothing here, and interest rates still at rock bottom, buyers are bidding high and removing every possible contingency to compete for the limited supply.”

Consumers are doing their homework, noted Joan Kuptz, broker/owner of RE/ MAX Advantage in Henderson, Nev., a suburb of Las Vegas.

“They see that Nevada has no state taxes and is a relatively cheap state to live in,” she said. “As a result, inmigration here is increasing mightily, primarily from California, Florida and Texas, according to a study based on driver’s license requests.”

With a scant 1.4-month supply of available homes, Kuptz said, it is inevitable that a home priced at under $300,000 or $350,000 may draw as many as 20 offers in 24 hours.

“To give you an idea how many buyers are coming in just from the Silicon Valley area of California,” said Kuptz, “the cost to rent a U-Haul from Las Vegas to Oakland is $124 - but the cost to rent one from Oakland to Las Vegas can be well over $2,000.”

The elephant in the room, as calendar pages turn, is whether - and how long this hot market environment is sustainable.

“One factor is inventory,” said Kuptz. “Many homeowners have been refinancing to take advantage of low rates, but Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be adding a 50-basis point fee to most mortgage refinances beginning in September.

That may encourage more people to put their homes on the market, which could help ease the crunch.”

The state of new construction is another issue.

“Construction basically came to a standstill midCOVID,” noted Deuitch,” putting pressure on current housing inventory. But it’s slowly beginning to ramp up.

We’re seeing some construction now on the outskirts of Tucson, where starter homes may sell for as little $250,000.”

There is the normal slowdown leading up the holidays.

“The season started late and picked up steam fast,” Deuitch noted. “There is no way to know how long pentup demand will last.”

Yet another factor is unemployment.

“Unemployment has hit the hospitality industry hard,” noted Kuptz. “Here in Las Vegas, for example, a couple of casino/hotels have opened, but some may never re-open. What that will mean for the overall

economy still remains to be seen.”

Financial factors weigh heavily, agreed Docktor.

“It’s difficult to predict,” she said, “if unemployment remains high and renter’s protections are not renewed, how much renter displacement might impact the housing picture - or, for that matter, how much a second stimulus package might help.”

And, of course, there is the pandemic itself.

“This health crisis has indelibly changed our way of thinking, touching every aspect of our lives,” Docktor said. “How soon there is an effective vaccine, when more Americans feel safe and stable, all of this will factor in.”

Still, said Deuitch, there is reason to believe the housing market will remain strong.

“There is no housing bubble this time around,” he said.

“There is no easy money.”

In fact, he said, credit has tightened as lenders check and re-check a borrower’s employment status right up until closing.

“Barring some huge calamity,” Deuitch said, “like continuing surges of the coronavirus or a new economic catastrophe, I think we will continue to see a healthy real estate market for at least the foreseeable future.”

Workcamp NE campers provide labor, service and love

By Bonnie Adams Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH – Summer is traditionally a time for camps; and for many young people it is not just a time for fun with friends, but also an opportunity to do service projects.

One such camp, Workcamp NE, was hosted Aug. 10-14 by Westborough’s Chapel of the Cross. Campers from three other local churches, Chinese Gospel Church of MA (Southborough); Christian Gospel Church of Worcester; and Medway Community Church, also participated. The 63 students participating ranged from grade 7 to grade 12.

And although these are unusual times that we live in, the week provided the students not only a chance to help those in need, but also gave them an opportunity to learn valuable lessons about adapting and even thriving in times of challenge, their leader, Josh King, Chapel of the Cross’s Director of Student Ministries, said.

Instead of going to a worksite in another community, as they traditionally do, this year the campers stayed local due to the restrictions and concerns related to the pandemic.

“We sent out posters, postcards and used social media to find folks who could use a helping hand,” King said. “We received about 20 requests.”

“We had to select sites based on: what the students could accomplish in one week; the job had to be 100 percent outside due to safety concerns; the families with the greatest needs; and the closest location to Westborough,” he added.”

During the week, which also happened to be an extremely hot one, the kids worked on 12 homes doing such things as painting, general landscaping and even repairing porches and stairs. The kids wore face coverings at all times if the social distancing mandate of six feet could not be adhered to.

All of the paint, tools, materials, and labor were provided at no cost to the resident.

“The $300 camp registration fees went to paying for the supplies etc..” King said.

“That’s right. The students paid to serve all these families.”

At the end of each day, they returned back to the church

I am extremely grateful and honored that the 6th Annual Hannah Kane Charity Classic was a tremendous success! While the format of our tournament may have changed due to the pandemic, the sense of camaraderie and joy of giving did not. I am very thankful to all the generous individuals and businesses who contributed to our efforts to raise funds for three hard-working human service organizations in our community: St. Anne’s Human Services, Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services and Westborough Food Pantry.
