By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - The pandemic has changed many areas of the educational experience this year, including snow days, open houses, parent-teacher conferences, and enrollment changes. All were discussed during the Northborough K-8 School Committee meeting on November 4.

Parents are also urging the School Committee to approve free full day kindergarten next school year instead of waiting for 2023-2024.

Although comments made during the audience sharing portion of the School Committee agenda do not require a response, parents were vocal with their desire for free full day kindergarten to start next school year, instead of waiting until the proposed 2023-2024 school year. Southborough and many surrounding towns have implemented free kindergarten.

Whiskers for Westborough continues to grow WESTBOROUGH – Once again, the Westborough Police Department is joining its colleagues across the state in a special initiative, “No Shave November.” Participating officers are allowed to grow facial hair in exchange for donations that they then contribute to a worthy cause.

This year, the “Whiskers for Westborough” effort, as it is dubbed, is raising funds for Home Base No Shave, a program run by the Boston Red Sox and Massachusetts General Hospital. This program supports veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries, anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders that are associated from their time in the military.

NORTHBOROUGH — The Northborough Community Affairs Committee is pleased to announce a new event for this upcoming holiday season - the 1st Annual Light Up the Town community decorating contest. Residents of Northborough can sign-up to compete for the most festive display in town and members of the community will be able to vote online for their favorite three houses.

The Committee came up with this idea because it cannot hold the Annual Tree Lighting event downtown due to the current situation and regulations. “The recent Jack-O-Lantern Stroll was such a huge hit for our community that we felt we should come up with a fun, socially distant

event for the holiday season as well,” said Lisa Hodge, chair of the Northborough Community Affairs Committee.

In order to take part in the decorating contest, community members must register on the Committee’s website

by Monday, Nov. 30. A list of addresses will then be made available on the website and Facebook page. On the weekends of Dec. 4-6 and Dec. 11 -13 from 5-8 p.m., the competing houses will be lit for all to drive around, enjoy and then vote. Voting will begin on Dec. 4 and end on Dec. 14. Each of the three winners will receive a prize from a local business.

Cooking with Wine

W

hen a recipe calls for a cup of wine, you may want to reconsider running out to the grocery store to purchase cooking wine, a product that is often found next to the vinegars. Cooking wine has added salt and preservatives and is not intended for drinking. Choose instead a moderately-priced, medium-bodied, quaffable wine that will complement the flavors of the dish being made.

Crisp, white wines such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and unoaked Chardonnay are excellent options for cooking. They add fruit and acidity to seafood dishes and sauces. Another option is to use an already-opened bottle of one of these white wines.

Refrigerated wine that is only a day or two old will still retain its flavor.

Use a “lower quality” wine if you’re cooking a slow-cooked dish like a stew than if you’re quickly deglazing a pan. A good trick is to add a small dash of better wine at the end of a long braise which makes it taste as if that’s the wine you’ve cooked with. Westborough Fire Department honors local veterans

Purcell then passed out to each veteran a “challenge coin” which has an image of the original 1988 Westborough Fire Station on it.

And as one last treat, the department made WWII veteran Jack Crane, 96, an honorary firefighter and invited him to go for a ride up in Truck 1’s bucket, to the delight of all.

Besides Crane, five other Highlands residents served in WWII. They are Paul Lynch, Don Foss, Warren MacConnell, Chase Libby and John Guico.

there is a storm that causes power outages in the city, the day will be deemed a “snow day.” If Bergeron calls a “remote day” and there ends up not being a snow storm, it is simply a remote learning day and does not affect the calendar.

The current school calendar has the last day of school scheduled for June 18 with five snow days added, if necessary bringing the last day of school to June 25 so a remote day versus a snow day means kids can finish the year on June 18.

There must be 170 school days in the 20-21 year, according to Bergeron.

The vote for no planned snow days was not unanimous.

Committee Member Denise Ryan said she’s not “a fan of taking away snow days - kids need a break.” She proposed three snow days if needed and then anything further would be deemed remote.

“It’s sad to just take it away but that’s just my point of view with three kids learning at home,” she added.

Young advocates celebrate voter turnout after months of grassroots organizing

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer REGION - A loose network of college and high school advocates sent flurries of direct messages and social media postings to well over a thousand area young people in the days before this month’s election.

They asked one question — “How can we help you vote?”

Organized under the banner

of “Vote Local Massachusetts” people like Hudson’s Julia Terra-Salomão found civic purpose this fall in the apolitical goal of getting more people to participate in democracy.

As the 2020 election shattered voter turnout records, those individuals are now looking back and seeing a job well done.

“That really has to do with local community members

doing the work to get the vote out,” Terra-Salomão said. “...

That’s where the work has always been done and I think that’s what the future is.”

Around the same time, similar chapters popped up in Shrewsbury, Marlborough and Southborough.

“Vote Local kind of gives us a place to work together,” TerraSalomão said of this broad organizational structure. “We share resources. But then we also get to make it our own and focus on what we think will be best for our followers.”

Groups, indeed, operated by attracting followers, then individually direct messaging those followers. Organizers introduced themselves in messages and offered guidelines on how to request mail in ballots, make voting plans, and more.

This strategy of conversation, Terra-Salomão said, was a deliberate one focused on personalizing politics and political advocacy.

“Often, when these text banking things happen, if it’s someone you know talking to you, it feels more person to person and like you’re talking to a friend,” she said. “We felt that would be a more effective way to get out the vote.”

Through it all, Terra-Salomão stressed that she and fellow organizers remained committed to political neutrality.

They have their own opinions, Terra-Salomão conceded.

And many were, in fact, directly involved with organizing local Black Lives Matter demonstrations over the summer.

But, with a message of po-

litical participation and election integrity, Terra-Salomão said she and other youth agreed they couldn’t push an actual partisan agenda.

“At the end of the day,” she said, “if we’re trying to uphold the principle of our democracy, the goal should be getting everyone to vote no matter what they believe.”

It’s hard to track the actual impacts of a group like Vote Hudson. Public data, after all, only captures cumulative voter turnout for entire towns.

Regardless, in an election upended by COVID-19, turnout still actually spiked. The nation set records. Massachusetts as a state impressed its own top election officer as Secretary of State William Galvin said before Election Day that he expected to see record rates of voting. Back in Hudson, meanwhile, turnout jumped by 2 percent compared to the 2016 election, mimicking a trend seen across the region.

Youth leaders claim this as a win, celebrating national grassroots efforts to get people registered to vote and, eventually, into polling locations.

Going forward, though, they stress that this is only the beginning.

“We’ve just been really appreciative of all the positive feedback we’ve got so far,” Terra-Salomão said. “We’re just individual people trying to make sense of this crazy climate. So it feels good to know that we’ve made an impact on people.”

Marlborough City Council approves tax break for proposed CA biotech company

By Vicki Greene Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH – As Marlborough seeks to grow its Life Sciences base that includes major companies Hologic, Sunovion and Boston Scientific, the City Council Nov, 16 voted 9-2 to approve a Tax Increment Financing exemption (TIF) to Revance Therapeutics, Inc. and BH GRP TCAM Owner LLC seeking to build/lease its first facility outside of California.

Headquartered in Newark, Calif. with 430 employees, Revance Therapeutics, Inc. develops products used for aesthetics (including cosmetic fillers and injectables) and other therapeutics.

Company representatives started talks with Mayor Arthur Vigeant and Meredith Harris, executive director of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) at the end of August about plans to invest “approximately “$115 million in building improvements and capital investment” for a 79,000 square foot building and parking facilities at lots 110, 110, 250 and 350 Campus Drive.

The company plans to hire 76 full-time, on-site employees by 2025 from Marlborough and surrounding communities.

The number would increase as construction is completed, equipment is installed, government approvals are received and business ramps up Councilors Christian Dumais and Samantha Perlman voted in opposition to the TIF agreement and expressed concern about the timing of the request.

“This is challenging, during a pandemic when we should be supporting small business that are struggling,” Perlman said.

During a Nov. 9 meeting of the Council’s Finance Committee, Dumais said he was really “struggling” with this vote due to the pandemic and economic downturn.

“Obviously now we had to lay off municipal employees, people are having difficulties paying their bills and their taxes,” he said. “Numerous small business (owners) like myself are on the verge of shutting down.”

In a letter to Mayor Arthur Vigeant, Brian Blagg, Revance Therapeutics vice president of Engineering, Facilities, EH & S Supply Chain, stated they

were looking to select a location where they could “hire and retain exceptional talent” and one that had “lower operating costs and a stable and business-friendly environment with an improved tax structure.”

Vigeant told the Committee the company was choosing between Marlborough and Northborough and that North-

borough has a single tax rate which results in much lower commercial tax bills.

“Our commercial tax rate (is higher but) allows us to keep residential rates down,” he explained. “The question is, does the Council want a new building to come down there and have additional tax revenue coming in to offset what we charge our residents and I

Councilor Mark Oram echoed that sentiment and added “the more biotech we can attract the better we’ll all be.”

The TIF agreement goes through the state and is managed by the MEDC.

don’t want to mislead anyone, there is nothing coming out of the pockets of any resident of this city (because of this tax exemption).”

Several councilors discussed the long-term benefit of bringing in businesses with employees that will hopefully frequent Marlborough shops and restaurants, particularly at this difficult economic time.

At the start of the ceremony, Westborough Police Chief Jeffrey Lourie recalled “the horrific 911 call” that Westborough dispatchers Maryann Silva and Pamela Orlando received on the afternoon of Nov. 15, 2019.

A woman who resided at Windsor Ridge Drive had been stabbed repeatedly by her husband and had fled to a neighbor’s apartment to seek shelter. The husband broke into that apartment and continued stabbing his wife. When police responded, the assault was still continuing. Kalagher then shot the man, killing him.

Mass. Secretary of Public Safety and Security Thomas Turco and Mass. Undersecretary for Law Enforcement Terrence Reidy concurred with Lourie, as they praised the actions of the 32-year veteran of the WPD. “He neutralized the situation,” Reidy said. “If he didn’t do that victim would not be alive.”

The men also lauded the leadership of Lourie and former Police Chief Alan Gordon, who they said helped train their officers to respond to situations like the Nov. 19 call.

After received the medal, Kalagher was visibly moved as he made brief remarks, and noted that day last fall “had been the most challenging day of my career.”

As he thanked those in attendance for their support, he praised the work of dispatchers Silva and Orlando who he said, “did a great job under extreme circumstances.”

“I also want to thank the female survivor wherever she may be,” he added. “She had the courage to fight off her attacker and seek refuge. And also the family who took her in to protect her.”

“It is my honor to protect and serve the citizens of Westborough,” he concluded.

After the ceremony, Kalagher led his department off the field and then one by one, his colleagues lined up to offer a hug and words of congratulations.

According to mass.gov., the Medal of Valor is the second highest award given to a police officer who demonstrates actions above and beyond the call of duty, exhibiting valor, courage and bravery while disregarding the potential for danger or great risk to him or herself during the course of an individual incident.

Shrewsbury Rotary continues ‘Service Above Self’ Holiday Gift and Giving Basket Auction fundraiser to be held online Beth Casavant and Owen Russell with the club’s basket display,

SHREWSBURY – “Service Above Self” is the motto of the Rotary Club. Rotarians are always looking for ways to positively impact their communities and support charitable causes. It’s central to its mission: “provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.”

Yet, to continue to serve, largely through financial contributions, the Shrewsbury Rotary Club must raise the necessary funds to continue its mission.

“This year, due to the pandemic, we’ve been advised by Rotary International to not hold any in person events or fundraisers,” stated club president Owen Russell.

“We do so much for the town of Shrewsbury by giving back and we needed an alternative way to raise funds so that we could give back to different organizations in town,” he explained. “Unfortunately, this year we had to cancel one of our biggest fundraisers which is our Recycling Day in October.”

The club has found a safe option and will hold an on-line Holiday Gift and Giving Basket Auction fundraiser this holiday season.

It’s all remote so it is a completely safe holiday shopping alternative because, like everything else, shopping this season and gift giving is going to be a bit different in an age of COVID-19. Best of all, shoppers can shop in the comfort of their own homes.

“The work that Rotary does to support the community is especially important now,” remarked event chair Beth

Casavant.

Funds raised will go right back into the community and will benefit critical services for those who have been hit the hardest because of the pandemic, e.g., St. Anne’s Human Services and Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services.

Casavant shared that funds raised last year were used to purchase gift cards for Meals on Wheels volunteers and the staff at the Shrewsbury Nursing Home to show appreciation for their continued efforts during the early months of the pandemic Additionally, school supplies including COVID kits filled with cloth face coverings, hand sanitizer, tissues, and soap were distributed to students in grades K-12, whose families are supported by St. Anne’s Food Pantry, prior to the start of the school year.

The auction entails 15 baskets featuring items ranging from a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Suite, an Italian feast, a romantic evening, chocolate and other goodies for enhanced wellness, family game nights and beating pandemic bore-

dom. The fair market value in total is more than $3,000.

Casavant added: “Every club member engaged in creating this online auction, and the baskets reflect our unique

Shrewsbury Council on Aging announces ‘Gifts for Seniors’ program

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – The Council on Aging recently announced “Gifts for Seniors,” a new initiative by a group of volunteers who call themselves the “In It Together Volunteer Group.”

They came together because they realize that the pandemic has changed the way everyone has had to adapt. Especially hard hit is the senior population; many of whom are experiencing isolation.

As such, the group is organizing a holiday gift collection and are seeking donations so that Shrewsbury seniors know that they are not forgotten.

“We’ve had numerous requests from volunteers that have reached out to us during the pandemic that want to help us out,” remarked Hollie Lucht, director of the Council on Aging.

She explained that one volunteer in particular named Paula, who wished to remain anonymous, and a few of her friends have joined together to form the “In it Together Volunteer Group” to help seniors in the community feel less alone during the upcoming holiday season.

From now until Tuesday, Dec. 15, the group will be collecting donated gifts. Items can be dropped off in the designated bins at the front entrance of the Shrewsbury Senior Center located at 98 Maple Ave. Lucht said, “All items should be new, with tags and can easily be purchased at the Dollar Store.”

Suggested gift ideas include: holiday cards (handmade or bought,) non-skid socks, sugar-free candy, diet and regular ginger ale, adult coloring books and pencils, granola bars, cookies, crackers, bottled water, cereal, peanut butter, large print crosswords, word search books, toiletry

items, coin purse, flashlight, stuffed animal, blankets, mittens, combs, brushes, toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, or gift cards.

support teacher salaries. The District’s budget plan was to adjust tuition each year until it was fully absorbed into the budget. Tuition was partially reimbursed to parents last spring due to school closures and has been waived this year, while classes are not meeting fully in person.

Learning and achievement gaps and financial hurdles were concerns voiced by parents.

Parent Laura Hovey highlighted that kindergarten will be even more important next year as many parents did not send their child to pre-K this year.

“Take this initiative across the finish line for the next upcoming school year,” she said.

Lauren Fortier currently has a Kindergartener in the hybrid model.

“While the remote days for kindergarteners are half days, I have seen that a half day isn’t

enough for their developing brains,” she said. “When thinking about what a kindergarten brain can do and can learn from, it’s a full day that they can grow from. COVID has highlighted more than ever those who have and those who don’t have in so many facets. Families who are more financially stable can afford tutors, child supervision or be able to be home with their children and focus on supporting their children through their

learning. As kids return to school in person, I think we will need to make up a big gap and provide a full day of enrichment and interaction for all of our students, not just the families who can afford to pay for that full day. This is the time to take advantage of that and give to our students as much as we possibly can.”

The School Committee was urged to make this a priority as the District enters budget season.

ith winter just around the corner, the fireplace takes on greater importance in the sale of a home. The warm glow of a fire on a cold winter night can be magical.

One of the most popular requests from buyers is a fireplace when purchasing a home.

People love the ambiance that a blaze provides, while others rely on their fireplaces to keep them warm and cozy during cold winter months. Many homes in New England have fireplaces, but for the ones that do not, more and more homeowners are looking for ways to install them. It is becoming a sought-after amenity and homes boasting this feature see the benefit when selling a home.

Your fireplace is the focal point when people come to see your home and should complement the rest of your home.

Lately, what has become extremely popular is painting over old, red brick which will make a huge improvement on the look of the fireplace. You could also consider resurfacing over the bricks or looking into different painting techniques such as faux painting.

A stone fireplace can set a home apart and significantly improve resale value. Adding a mantel will frame and enhance the fireplace. There are so many styles and designs for mantels from modern and traditional to craftsman.

Keeping the mantel clean and uncluttered is also a must. You want the focal point to be the fireplace. It is fine to decorate with a few accessories but try not to distract from the fireplace itself.

Now onto the popular gas fireplace I have been listing and selling homes for over 16 years.

By far one of the most popular requests is a gas fireplace

fueled either by natural or propane gas. You see them more in homes and they are a popular request from buyers and easy to use. Plus, they can be installed just about anywhere in the home. There is no need for a chimney, wood or even matches with this type of fireplace and there is no mess to clean up, either. Most recently I listed a home with a gas fireplace. At first, because of the style, I thought it was a wood or pellet stove but was pleasantly surprised it was a gas stove. The heat generated from the stove was great and the stove was a nice added feature for the family room.

Another option to consider is an electric fireplace An electric fireplace is often the least expensive option, reasonably easy to install and more advanced than earlier models. Technology has made them more beautiful than ever, and many can be operated by remote control. Users can turn on both the flame and heat, or just one. Another benefit is that they can be operated year-round in any climate and are easy to clean and maintain.

Finally, regardless of the season, a fireplace should be kept clean and in good working order. You want the buyer to feel great about that room, knowing they can move in and

Born in 1738, Eames answered the call on April 19, 1775 in response to the alarm raised in Lexington and Concord. He also served in the Continental Army in 1777. Eames passed in 1823.

Shrewsbury honors veterans

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – Dignitaries gathered at the Beal School to offer their appreciation to local veterans on Nov. 11. Veterans gathered in their vehicles at Town Hall to form a procession on Maple Avenue to the World War I Monument in front of Beal School.

The caravan began at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month and, oddly enough, the parade lasted just about eleven minutes, with about a dozen or so cars, to process from Town Hall to Beal School.

While there was not a traditional speaking ceremony, local Boys Scouts presented the veterans with cards and flags at the beginning of the procession. Several Girl Scouts and dignitaries including the Board of Selectmen and State Representative Hannah Kane (R-Shrewsbury) were waiting for them at Beal School with posters and gratitude.

tously in use, the economics of recycling them has been generally unattractive for businesses. These plastics eventually make their way in our fresh-water lakes and oceans destroying habitats and damaging the environment. The objective of this drive is to increase awareness of this serious issue and invite com-

The Trex Plastics Challenge requires a community to collect about 500 pounds of bag and film plastics for recycling over a period of six months.

If successful, Trex rewards the community with a park bench. Community members are being asked to collect waste bags and film plastics in their homes and periodically bring them to one of the collection centers. It is recommended that the collected plastics be saved in clean, regular 13.2-gallon trash bags. Once each bag weighs about 3-4 lbs., bring them to one of the following

Despite getting tangled up with a defender, Caroline “CK” Kelly knocked in the game winning goal late in the fourth quarter.

COMMUNITY | Schools School officials unveil new van donated by Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – Shrewsbury school administrators met with Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union (SFCU) President Jim Dupont and Marketing Manager Lisa Raabe Nov. 6 to unveil a new van that the school district was able to purchase due to SFCU’s sponsorship of the district’s Colonial Connections program.

“We are very proud to be able to support the school system and we think that this is a great venture,” Dupont said.

“We are hoping after COVID they can really get some great use out of the van.”

When SFCU made this commitment over a year and a half ago, transportation was a key element to bridging Shrewsbury Public Schools with the business community.

school administrators talked about how having access to a van and how it would be beneficial in lots of ways for different student activities and opportunities and so having our partner, the Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union, through their very generous partnership, to provide this is really going to make a difference,” noted Superintendent Dr. Joseph Sawyer. “And we are really looking forward to once we are post-COVID and in

more of a situation to be able to use it…We couldn’t be more grateful!”

The commitment was made through a $400,000 sponsorship, over the course of five years, to increase access through internships for experiential learning opportunities and exposure to career choices to help students develop independence after graduation.

As such, a critical component was transporting students to internship possibilities.

“I would like to thank the Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union for supporting our ongoing efforts to bring opportunities to students that bring them further to understanding what it is that they would like to do,” noted Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jane Lizotte.

“Often times what gets in the way is transportation…This removes that obstacle.”

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community reporter SHREWSBURY - Patrick Collins, assistant superintendent for finance & operations, gave a brief report to the School Committee Nov. 4 relative to the district’s plans for redistricting the elementary school zones in anticipation for the fall 2021 opening of the new Major Howard W. Beal School.

“The Beal project has been a good news story persistently, even through this pandemic period,” Collins remarked.

“The construction project is on schedule and set to open next August/September.”

The district has contracted with consultants from AppGeo, a firm who has expertise in assisting with school redistricting in other Massachusetts municipalities.

With the opening of the school, the number of elemen-

tary schools in Shrewsbury will increase by one and each of the five schools will then be designated K through grade 4. As such, this will require redistricting of the elementary school “attendance zones.”

An 11-member ad hoc committee was established in September 2019. Consisting of School Committee members, school administrators and parents, it had met a couple of times prior to the pandemic. It has recently reconvened.

“We appreciate the parent input that is on this committee and providing input into the recommendation,” he added.

AppGeo will take the student enrollment and digitally map by address, elementary school zone and demographic information.

Remote learning to continue in Marlborough through Jan. 11

By Vicki Greene Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH —The School Committee voted Nov. 10 to keep students grades 3-12 learning remotely with a projected return date on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021. Students in Pre-K through Grade 2, English Language Learners and Special Education students will continue in-person learning.

Superintendent Michael Bergeron can call a special school committee meeting prior to Jan. 11 if he feels it’s necessary.

Mayor Arthur Vigeant, who serves as School Committee Chair, along with several committee members and Bergeron said they’ve all received emails from parents “that were 5050” on how to proceed through the holidays.

“For consistency of learning and working parents I believe staying remote right now through the holidays will then give an extra week to see if symptoms or cases come up,” Vigeant said. “I am fully intending to bring students back to school on the 11th and if something changes we’ll schedule an emergency meeting.”

Charlie Baker’s news conference announcing new metrics and a new COVID-19 map last week asking all non “red” or “high risk” communities go back to in-person learning “caused confusion (because) we as educators think students learn best in the classroom but we’re in our fourth week working remotely and we’ve built up a rhythm and routines.”

Barry advocated for consistency and keeping remote learning with a reassessment in January.

Allison Lucas, Marlborough High School senior and Student School Committee Representative agreed.

“From a student standpoint we should stay remote,” she said. “I feel so much better knowing every day is the same (schedule) and going back and forth is mentally draining. “ There was much concern among the Committee about

wanting to avoid a “ping pong” effect. The district started the year off in a hybrid model but due to positive case counts and quarantining staff and students, the School Committee voted at the end of October to move Grades 3-12 to remote.

Bergeron told the Com-

mittee that the state’s change in metrics and color coding communities by positive cases brought the number of “red” communities down from 121 to 19. He said under the new threshold of a five percent positivity rate, Marlborough would have never been high risk as it has been between one and three percent under the new model.

Marlborough is a “solid yellow” according to Bergeron and he doesn’t see that changing so the city is no longer considered high risk. These new state guidelines have prompted every community to reassess their school and business policies.

“I listened to what the governor said and unfortunately I don’t think the state has been very helpful,” Committee Member Heidi Matthews said.

“They’re telling us one thing and at the same time saying it’s your (local) decision.”

When asked about remote learning attendance Bergeron said it has been over 90 percent for elementary and middle school students and over 80 percent for high school.

There are 59 cases in the City as of Nov. 10 according to Vigeant who said he believes that number is “stagnant up or down 10 or 15 either way” for the foreseeable future.

Collins shared that the next steps will be for AppGeo to build several scenarios, schedule meeting for evaluations,

“We have scheduled Dec. 1 for our first virtual community forum so that would be the first time that we present some preliminary options for the entire community to look at and to explain some of the basics of the process to the community,” he said.

Their goal is to bring a formal recommendation to be

voted on by the School Committee as early as their Feb. 10 meeting.

“This is so exciting…This is a really complicated process and I think you’ve laid out a very reasonable process and I hope we can get the community to engage early and frequently because we know they have strong feelings,” commented committee member Lynsey Heffernan.

Obituaries Edward T. McCabe Jr., 76 WESTBOROUGH - Edward Thomas “Thom” McCabe Jr., 76, of Westborough, passed away Oct. 30, 2020 at the UMass Memorial HealthcareMemorial Hospital in Worcester. He was the husband of Judith K. (Schlott) McCabe, with whom he was happily married for 54 years.

In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Sean K. McCabe and his wife Eliana of Westborough; one daughter, Tara A. McCabe of Key West, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

Marilyn J. Doyle, 87 NORTHBOROUGH - Marilyn J. (Hart) Doyle, a longtime resident of Northborough, passed away peacefully Oct. 27, 2020 at the UMass-Memorial Medical Center’s University

Campus. She was 87 years old.

She was the devoted wife of 59 years to the late John “Jack” C. Doyle until his passing in 2014.

Betty and her husband, Frank Bonaventura, enjoyed 67 years of marriage together and raised three sons whom she leaves behind, Frank, Kevin, and Anthony and his longtime partner Judie Morin. She also leaves three sisters, Anna Vosila, Dorothy Zytack, and Ellen Hamilton and her husband Richard.
