COMMUNITY | News Northborough is making progress addressing truck traffic concerns

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - Residents in the Bartlett Street area should notice reduced truck traffic within a few weeks.

Northborough Director of Public Works Scott Charpentier and Town Administrator J o h n C o d e r re s h a re d a comprehensive list of steps, which have been taken or are in progress, to address resident traffic concerns at the Dec. 21 Board of Selectmen meeting.

This includes signage at the trucking facilities, a traffic study and a parking ban on Bartlett Street.

Measures implemented or to come Traffic barriers were installed on Bartlett Street in an area where tractor trailers parked overnight.

Advance warning signs have been installed at the intersections of Bartlett and Maple Streets and Ridge Road and Lyman Street to notify trucks of an upcoming truck exclusion on part of Maple and Collins Streets.

Another advance truck exclusion warning sign will be installed in the vicinity of Route 20 Eastbound and Maple Street to prevent trucks from turning down Maple Street, which has a truck exclusion on that end.

The Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission (CMRPC) scheduled a new traffic count study for the spring for Ridge Road and the portion of Maple Street that does not already have a truck exclusion. Charpentier said that waiting until the truck facilities are fully operational will capture an accurate

The town is waiting on a determination from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to reconsider the denial of installation of a pedestrian a c t i va te d s i g n a l a t t h e crosswalk at Route 20 and Maple Street. The crosswalk is in close proximity to an elementary school, athletic fields, a restaurant and other businesses.

Parking mandates on Bartlett Street The Board unanimously voted in favor of prohibiting parking on Bartlett Street from Route 20 to the town line after much discussion, including insights from Charpentier and Police Chief William Lyver.

“It’s really not appropriate to park on Bartlett Street from the school (Algonquin Regional High School) or Hemlock to Route 20,” said Charpentier. “There is not adequate shoulder width for

safe parking. When you go past the school and you start to broaden out in width you are approaching the industrial zone and that is where we don’t want tractor trailers parking.”

Coderre said this would eliminate the parking issue and give the police department the tools to enforce it. It would also be in effect before other facilities open on Bartlett Street.

Discussions and contact have been made with all the facilities on Bartlett Street.

Coderre said that without hesitation, they want to work with the town and reduce neighborhood concerns and are committed to being good neighbors. Permanent signage is or will be installed to direct trucks out of the facilities along the preferred route of Cedar Hill and Hayes Memorial.

New Amazon facilities In a letter to Coderre dat-

ed Dec. 18, Amazon Site Leader Asad Raja said flyers to drivers departing the site were distributed with detailed instructions.

“For a long-term solution, we are working to introduce technology that will facilitate drivers to select the preferred routes through the local community,” Raja stated.

Board member Julianne Hirsh asked for a public presentation with the Amazon representative to address all community questions and to give an overview of what residents can expect as the facilities fully open.

Coderre said he could make the request and would see if they are willing to come in for further dialogue.

Residents are asked to take a photo of any truck on a road where it isn’t allowed, including its plate or marker number so the police department can follow up with the appropriate facility.

Letters to the Editor To the Editor: The Rotary Club of Westborough is grateful for the recent showing of interest in our time-honored tradition of lighting downtown Westborough for the holidays.

When started over two decades ago, Rotarians could be seen using long poles to string lights upon the dozens of trees in the downtown area. In recent years, due to the aging of the trees (as well as Rotarians), we have been fortunate to have the assistance of the Department of Public Works. We must also recognize the assistance over the years from Brett Borglund, whose electrical expertise and hands-on work has been invaluable.

Our intention has always been to bring joy to the

community of Westborough.

As we prepared for this year, on top of the disappointment of having to cancel Santa’s visit and the lighting ceremony due to COVID-19 concerns, we were met with another challenge.

The DPW informed us that their bucket-truck could no longer safely reach the tall, large tree canopy in a manner that would provide attractive lighting. Therefore, we were forced to find an alternative design for the lighting, fully aware we’d need to make adjustments along the way.

As planned, we’ve been having ongoing discussions with town officials and others in order to make the adjustments we believe are practical this year as well as those for the future.

In the midst of this effort, a social-media survey of publicopinion has generated a public commentary which has turned an already difficult situation into more of a controversy.

Hudson Selectmen, Health Department mull accepting volunteer contact tracers

HUDSON - The Hudson Health Department just hired a new part-time contact tracer to aid the COVID-19 fight. But even that may still not be enough help as the pandemic overwhelms municipal capabilities, officials said Dec. 7.

A n s we r i n g q u e s t i o n s from Selectman Fred Lucy, in particular, Executive Assistant Tom Moses and Health Director Kelli Calo, thus, tentatively broached a possible remedy — they’re considering accepting volunteers onto Hudson’s tracing team.

“We certainly would value more people doing contact tracing,” Calo told the board.

“It’s very overwhelming for our department right now…and I only see it getting worse.”

Hudson set a new record, between Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, recording 76 new coronavirus infections. That’s the most in any given week since the pandemic began.

After an observed spike in cases after Thanksgiving, and with holidays later this month looming, there’s fear this surge could only intensify.

Though they may offer a solution, Moses and Calo agree volunteer positions are not ideal.

Contact tracers frequently get yelled at, Calo noted.

Privacy concerns and at times fiery conversations on social media, further, could also be problematic, as Calo said volunteers would need to absolutely understand and adhere to the federal requirements known as HIPAA. “I want to make sure people know what they’re getting into if they take on this volunteer position,” Calo told selectmen and gathered attendees of their virtual meeting.

While the selectmen and health department came to no formal consensus on concrete plans for volunteer contact tracing, Chairman Joe Durant and Calo agree all interested parties should contact Calo at kcalo@townofhudson.org.

As such, Calderwood recently donated $1,000 she raised from her nonprofit, Winnie’s Treats, to the Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton, Inc. A class stirs a passion The genesis of her donation was when she was given a summer assignment in her AP language class last spring to research a social injustice or an issue that she wanted to “shine a light on.” She chose a topic that was near and dear to her heart – rescue dogs.

“I just want to spread awareness on this topic and how important it is to donate to local animal shelters and just support in general,” she added.

“Everyone forgets about animal shelters and everyone wants the perfect dog but there are so many dogs that need help and if you just give a little it can go a long way.”

Ten Marlborough nonprofits receive Cummings Community Giving grant M A R L B O R O U G H - Te n Marlborough nonprofits were recently surprised with a collective $18,000 in funding courtesy of Cummings Properties’ Cummings Community Giving program.

This annual initiative invites employees to each select a local charity to receive a $1,000 donation.

The philanthropic initiative is open to employees of Cummings Properties as well as its affiliated retirement communities, New Horizons at Marlborough and New H o r i z o n s a t C h o a te , i n Woburn. Colleagues with a decade or more with the company are given the option to select two organizations for $1,000 each.

Every organization may be selected by up to five staff members per cycle, for a total of $5,000. This year, 21 recipients reached the $5,000 maximum, including Marlborough Fire Department.

Three Marlborough organizations received $2,000 to $4,000: Kane Elementary School PTO, Marlborough Police Department, and Marlborough Public Schools.

The following Marlborough charities received $1,000 each: Boys and Girls Club of Metrowest, Goodnow Brothers Elementary School, Kits for Kids, Marlborough Public Schools Music Association, Richer Elementary School PTO, and Sophia’s Fund.

“Given our senior community’s strong, longstanding ties to this c i t y, w e w e re n’ t a t a l l surprised to see such support for Marlboroughbased organizations,” said Betsy Connolly, executive director of New Horizons at Marlborough.

In 2020, Cummings employees directed funds to nonprofits in 100 cities and towns across the Commonwealth.

“The personal connections make this program special,” said Dennis Clarke, Cummings Properties chair and CEO. “Every full-time colleague, regardless of seniority, has an opportunity to help a local cause that means a great deal to him or her.”

New Horizons employee Anna Stoddard designated her $1,000 to Marlborough’s Sophia’s Fund, a charity

dedicated to fighting childhood cancer.

“After my family was impacted by pediatric cancer, we decided we were going to start assisting other families going through the same situation,” said Stoddard. “It means so much to be able to help people struggling with

Northborough Area Community Chorus presents virtual concert Submitted by the Northborough Area Community Chorus NORTHBOROUGH - The Northborough Area Community Chorus has traditionally prepared two concerts each year for almost 50 years.

Due to the COVI¬¬¬D-19 pandemic, in-person rehearsals ceased and the 2020 Spring concert “Better Together” was cancelled.

With determination and the hard work of director Elinor A. Armsby, chorus member Kathy Horelik, the chorus board and chorus members, the NACC put together a virtual presentation.

Practice for this presentation consisted of masked and socially distant singing at outdoor venues in the fall, as well as multiple virtual Zoom rehearsals online.

One Energy pledges support to Boys & Girls Clubs of Metrowest MARLBOROUGH - One Energy, Inc. of Marlborough, who owns local Zoom Mart stores, is pledging its support to the local MetroWest chapter of the Boys and Girls Clubs by embarking on a fundraising campaign that will raise $6,500 for the clubs.

The campaign has two parts.

The first comes directly from sales at participating locations including the Sunoco / Zoom Mart, 146 Maple St., Mark Diarbakerly, owner of One Energy Marlborough and two in Framingham, Mobil Station/ Zoom Mart at 22 Waverly St. and the BP / Convenience Store at 1660 Worcester Road. In all three locations, one percent of all revenue (excluding tobacco, alcohol, lottery and fuel) will be contributed to the campaign.

Part two of the fundraising campaign gives every customer an opportunity to make a contribution of their own. One Energy will match every donation up to $100 per customer. Donations of any size, $1, $5, $10 or more will be welcomed.

Both facets of this campaign will continue, until the goal of $6,500 is met.

This cause is of great importance to Mark Diarbakerly, owner of One Energy, because as he shares, “I was raised by a single mom with six kids living well below the poverty line. Northborough Senior Center programs support winter safety, fall prevention

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - Winter has officially arrived and although falls can happen anytime of the year, icy walkways and stairs can contribute to more falls and injuries, especially with the older population.

Northborough Senior Center Director Liz Tretiak said falls are preventable and there are many ways to be proactive.

Sands for Seniors The Senior Center in collaboration with the Northborough Rotary Club initiated the Sand for Seniors program.

The intent is to increase safety during the winter by having Rotary volunteers deliver a bucket of ice melt product to the home of a senior citizen, who is unable to physically get it or unable to afford it.

Northborough residents aged 60 or older, who live in their own home, may be eligible for the program and are encouraged to call the Senior Center at 508-393-5035.

The program is one way to ensure winter safety, as well as to connect people to their community.

“There is a new initiative called #ReachOutMA to connect community members with one another and take care of one another,” said Tretiak.

“The residents, the Rotary Club volunteers, and the Senior Center staff all work together on this initiative. It is providing a service, but also a community connection.”

Members from the Rotary Club met recently at the Department of Public Works garage to begin filling the first 10 buckets for delivery.

Importance of fall prevention “The feedback from the first deliveries was so positive,” said Tretiak. “We have found that it is not so much a financial issue so far; it is an access issue - having the ability to lift the ice melt product and carry it from the store, to the car, and to the front steps is just too much for some folks.

that our seniors can get their Meals on Wheels deliveries and their homecare services.”

The Northborough Senior Center, as well as local aging services, take fall prevention seriously.

“Fall prevention is so important because as we age, the healing process can take longer,” said Tretiak. “Falling on ice is a major risk at all ages, it is not solely an aging concern, but seniors are more likely to have

more brittle bones and less flexibility. Older adults who aren’t active in their daily lives are more likely to fall outdoors during the winter. There are many contributing factors—unsteady gaits, declines in vision—but inactivity might be one of the biggest predictors of falls.”

Strength and balance exercises are important to help increase lower body strength and body and balance awareness. The Senior Center offers several strength classes and Tai Chi virtually via Zoom and on Northborough Cable Access Television (NCAT).

Seniors should check in with their doctors before starting a new exercise routine.

Other proactive suggestions include: • Talk to your doctor about specific concerns to evaluate risks • Havevisionandprescription glasses evaluated regularly.

Seniors receiving Meals on Wheels are not only being provided with a hot meal, but it’s another way to check-in. If someone doesn’t answer the door for their meal delivery, the agency will call the designated emergency contact to make sure everything is okay.

“Our Outreach worker Jocelyn Ehrhardt is a wealth of knowledge and can guide anyone in the process of aging safely in place at home,” said Tretiak.

Planning Board continues public hearing for Centech Boulevard project

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY –The Planning Board reviewed a site plan for a new office building and garage to be located at 5 and 9 Centech Blvd. at their December 3 meeting. A public hearing was also convened with no public comments. The Board spent roughly 20 minutes considering the project before continuing it to their Jan. 7, 2021 meeting.

Undaunted by the coronavirus pandemic, the project was brought forth by property owner ME Realty, LLC

of Shrewsbury. John Grenier from J.M Grenier Associates, Inc., the principal designer, appeared on behalf of the project. He provided a brief overview of the site plan that encompasses approximately two acres on the south side of Centech Boulevard near the intersection of Route 20 and abuts the Shrewsbury landfill.

Proposed plans “The proposed commercial building is a 12,600 square foot building that will be a ‘for lease’ for a potential of multiple tenants,” he remarked.

“The building is laid out so

that it will have available office space along the frontage on Centech Boulevard and have for tenants’ available overhead doors and one loading dock on the rear easterly side of the building.”

The lot is zoned limited industrial and the proposal meets all zoning requirements, with 29 parking spaces, according to Grenier.

Traffic concerns Steven Boulay, the Board chair, asked Grenier about signage directing traffic through the property. Grenier replied that this depends on the ten-

ants, and whether there is one or multiple, because there may not be a large volume of tractor trailers going through the parking lot.

Grenier also explained that a retaining wall, while not a part of the original site plan, will be designed to manage topographical grading.

“Given the last few projects that have had retaining walls with issues…I think it would make sense to have them designed and be a part of the site plan review and I think that conservation would probably be interested in that wall,” Boulay stated.

Shrewsbury woman uses technology and personal experience to inspire others Crowley named chair for Go Red for Women campaign

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – Imagine a perfect weekend in New York City with tickets to one of the hottest shows in town – “Dear Evan Hansen” and, after weeks of meticulous planning, you take your seats and just as the theater lights are dimmed, you have a stroke.

For Shrewsbury resident Christina Crowley, that is exactly what happened on Sept.

30, 2017. And now she is using her experience to help others as the recently named 2021 chair of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Go Red for Women campaign – Boston, a national initiative to increase women’s cardiovascular health awareness.

A night when everything changed Crowley, who was then a 44-year-old mother of four,

was preparing to enjoy the show with her older sister, her 16-year-old daughter and 15-year-old niece, when everything changed.

At the theater, she turned to her sister and tried to speak but nothing came out of her mouth.

She could not see out of her right eye and her right hand clenched and became numb.

At intermission, she shared what was happening with her sister who said they should immediately go to a hospital.

Crowley demurred, because she

didn’t “want to be a bother” and they had gone to great lengths and expense to get the tickets.

After the show Crowley did get to a hospital where a CAT scan revealed she’d had a stroke which was caused by an unknown congenital heart defect. She had a hole, a patent foramen ovale (PFO), in her heart.

She had surgery to correct the defect, but she had difficulties enduring afterwards.

A difficult recovery but support from colleagues With a thriving career as a senior vice president, Voice of Customer & License Management Services at Dell Technologies, she said that when she went back to work, she couldn’t make it through the day without having debilitating headaches.

She described having massive pressure “brain pain” in her

head that forced her into bed by 8 p.m. every evening. She would sleep until 7 a.m. the next morning just to be able to go to work.

She credits her coworkers at Dell for getting her through.

“I had this tremendous support system of team members and colleagues that protected me 100 percent,” she said.

“I’m talking about this now because I believe there is opportunity to educate and at least make people aware of stroke signs and the fact that if you go to the hospital i m m e d i a t e l y t h e re a re medications that can actually reverse the stroke signs and symptoms and reverse the process,” she shared.

Supporting youth with STEM programs As chair of the Go Red campaign, she will help raise

awareness and understanding of the work of the AHA, its research (particularly as it pertains to women’s cardiovascular health) and fundraising.

“We have partnered with the American Heart Association and my team at Dell, to focus on a STEM enrichment program for high school girls in the city of Boston,” Crowley said. “How do we take the talents that we have at Dell Technologies, which is a STEM Technology company, and use them to get girls interested in STEM-related topics?”

As such, they are developing an Innovator Challenge program where participating students will try to solve a public health problem with a STEM-based solution.

Crowley estimates that she is about 90 percent back to her former self. However, with some lingering numbness in her hand and difficulty remembering words, she acknowledged, “I am incredibly lucky, I know that, and I don’t take it for granted.”

Westborough nurse shares images from working on frontlines in Manhattan Egan | from page 1

Documenting the work of frontline workers However, in the back of her mind, she had a breaktime project brewing.

“As an ER nurse, you see these human moments,” she said.

Personal turmoil took a toll on frontline workers; they were torn between going to work to care for sick patients and staying home to protect themselves and their own families. The hospital began to offer its employees alternative living arrangements so they could remain a safe distance from their families.

“This is such a pinnacle time where people are personally affected but show up for their patients,” Egan said.

That “little breaktime project” became a “superspecial” project, said Egan, about the recently published “COVID-19: Inside the Global Epicenter: Personal Accounts from NYC Frontline Healthcare Providers.”

It came about when Egan approached her manager to ask permission to photograph her colleagues. She knew that patient privacy was imperative, so she figured out an alternative way to mesh her hobby and her career.

“I wanted to capture my co-workers to honor them and recognize them for the sacrifices they’re making.”

New book features personal stories and photos The 300-plus-page book, which can be purchased on Amazon, features photographs by Egan and blurbs by and about her subjects. Egan said that some of the writeups are simple, and some are “su-

Egan said that although her hospital was prepared to care for its patients safely — through new PPE and new protocols for isolating patients — some of her coworkers began to fall ill.

“There was a really fast progression of things getting real. I could just see that this was going to be an historical time,” she said.

Assabet Valley Camera Club to host ‘Wabi-Sabi’ photography program HUDSON - Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) will host photographer Lisa Cuchara on Wednesday, January 6 at 7:30 p.m. via a Zoom session. Cuchara is well-known throughout New England for expertise both behind the lens and in the digital darkroom. Her presentation will explore the beauty of imperfect and/or unconventional subjects.

Instead of seeking out the perfect, unblemished flower or leaf to photograph, this program highlights subjects that are not perfect, such as flowers that have character, decaying fall leaves, and items that stand out as flawed and hence different and beautiful.

Wabi-Sabi teaches photographers to find beauty in everyday life. It is used to describe a particular philosophy that beauty can be found in the old, the everyday, the imperfect. In this program Lisa will explore the concept of slowing down and appreciating the beauty of everyday life, things that might be overlooked.

“It really was something where we just asked them to donate something comforting,” Taralli explained.

Hospital staff grateful for support as they look towards future For frontline workers, all this is particularly helpful, especially now.

Daily reports of new COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts have soared to record levels since Thanksgiving. That has meant ICUs at facilities like UMass Memorial have filled, putting hospital workers in extremely high stress situations after some were able to briefly catch their breath over the summer.

“We get little signs,” Carlucci said of recent community support. “We get notes. And it really means a lot to the folks who, day in and day out, are taking care of very sick patients.”

Outside of donations like the Richer School goodie bags, morale has improved slightly, Carlucci says, since COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Marlborough this month.

“You could feel the energy [and] the excitement,” Carlucci said. “...That really has given them hope.”

Frontline workers will get their second vaccine dose in the coming weeks.

ARHS Guidance Dept. supports students in untypical college admission process

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH/ SOUTHBOROUGH - The college admission process has been quite different due to the pandemic, but despite the challenges the Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Guidance Department has been able to successfully support students and families through the process. Director of Guidance Lisa Connery along with Guidance Counselors Rebecca Haberman and Kate Mulcahy discussed the process at the Dec. 16 Regional School Committee meeting. The department’s support through this process has not changed, but how that information is shared has.

Virtual visits Many of the typical events and meetings have transitioned to a virtual platform, such as college fairs, financial aid presentations, and college representative visits.

She anticipates that virtual visits will continue to be a part of the admissions process in the future.

“It never replaces them (students) being able to physically visit a campus, but we have certainly provided them with the information they need to be able to access what is available to them,” said Connery.

Financial aid assistance Virtual presentations regarding financial aid offered families more flexibility in the time they could participate and were provided all the information to successfully complete the financial aid process.

Scholarship information will be online through Naviance, a college and career planning program used at ARHS. New ways of testing Standardized testing has also changed due to the pandemic.

Haberman said that twothirds of colleges are test optional for the Class of 2021.

Many of those schools may keep their test optional policy for a few additional years.

School salary article could be on Town Meeting warrant

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – The spring Town Meeting warrant may feature an article from the School Committee seeking $421,000 to cover salaries from January to June 2021. The money is to fund “unanticipated staffing needs,” brought about because of COVID-19 and includes 15 positions, two tutors, one long-term substitute and money for special needs instruction coverage after the January break.

On Dec. 16, the School Committee voted unanimously to put the article forward, noting that the money would come from free cash.

Superintendent Amber Bock said that the article could be passed over or reduced if CARES Act money or other funding becomes available.

She noted that staff had to be hired to work on “dual platforms,” as a result of the pandemic with both hybrid and remote learning taking place. She said that COVID-19 relief funds abruptly stopped in the middle of the school year, putting Westborough in a situation that is not unique.

Westborough School Committee Chair Kristen Vincent said there is always a hope that federal grants and additional aid will come through “to mitigate or help take care of” paying personnel.

Relying on limited town funds “is our worst-case scenario,” Vincent said.

Capital items may be on warrant The next step is moving the article to the finance committee for review.

Three school-related capital item requests may also go on the warrant as part of the capital planning

expenditure committee’s proposal.

Bock said that the capital committee considered a 14-item list and focused on three for this year.

Robert Ferguson, director of buildings and grounds for the school district, noted that the design and installation of a sprinkler system at Elsie A. Hastings Elementary School has an estimated cost of $750,000 based on bids of other projects.

If the request is slated for the warrant, that project would go out for bid between now and spring Town Meeting and a precise “true’ dollar amount” recommendation will be included.

Infrastructure projects A previous Town Meeting approved money to upgrade the HVAC system but the sprinkler project must happen first.

A second request involves the removal and replacement of two high school gym partitions at a cost of $297,805. Ferguson said that number comes from the vendor that does maintenance on the structure and cited liability and safety concerns as reasons why maintenance could not continue.

Softball field proposal Finally, the third proposal is to revamp the women’s softball field at the high school at an estimated cost of $200,858. The project includes excavating, installing dugouts and fencing and irrigation system work.

Ferguson said the town could save money by having things done in-house and saving on engineering costs, plans, etc.

He was told to get bids for every task included in the project for an exact estimate.

Shrewsbury expands iPads access for students

SHREWSBURY - Brian L’Heureux, director of information technology, gave an update to the School Committee at their Dec. 16 meeting on the district’s existing iPad program. He noted that one to one access to iPads has been expanded as a way to make access equitable among remote and hybrid learning students.

“We did expand that access through the pandemic to students K through grade 4 for the school year,” L’Heureux said.”

New devices were purchased with COVID-19 grant funding for grades 3 and 4 while reallocated existing devices were distributed to grades K through 2.

“As this has played out, we’ve gotten some feedback from teachers on some benefits to the iPads being in the classrooms at the elementary level,” L’Heureux said.

Recommendations “One of the concerns that has been expressed is over screen time, especially for younger students,” L’Heureux noted.

He recommended that the district continue to provide iPads to students in kindergarten through grade 4 in the future as well as the grade 5 through 12 programs.

“We do have an opportunity given the timing of the Beal building project to actually purchase iPads for the Beal students using project funding,” he said.

He laid out a purchasing schedule that leverages a combination of existing iPads and purchasing new iPads as part of appropriated budgets in fiscal year (FY)2022, FY2023 and FY2024.

The recommendation was unanimously supported by the committee.

To understand what buyers, expect, sellers benefit from taking a long hard look at their main rooms after spending a few hours binging on home-renovation shows or pouring over homedecor magazines. Get it?

If the resale house or condominium unit doesn’t have spa-like bathrooms, an oasisstyle master bedroom suite, and an air y (that means new, larger windows) open concept (down come those kitchens, dining room, and living room walls) central living space, buyers will only see massive, expensive renovations to achieve these “must haves.” The result?

Buyers may dramatically under-value your house or condo or ignore it altogether.

Ask local real estate professionals about the type of buyers who would be interested in the delayed gratification of paying for your “slightly dated” home’s location and then undertaking extensive renovations themselves. Will they pay you top-dollar?

Kitchens and bathrooms are the most expensive rooms to renovate, so it’s annoying to sellers that these are the only rooms that add value to a home. These key rooms may even decide whether a property sells at all.

The last renovation may seem a recent memory to sellers, but they must check the calendar. If it was more than 5 or even 10 years ago, this time lag puts sellers out of phase with millennial buyers — your home reminds them of their parents’ or grandparents’ place. Not a way to add value or evoke a “dream home” atmosphere.

• If the last renovation

was fairly recent, on-trend paint and other cosmetic staging touch-ups may be all that’s necessary for great return on this investment.

• If your home decor pays homage to the 20th century, discuss 21st century renovations options with real estate, construction, and staging professionals.

Hone down what needs to be done to create an effective cosmetic minimum after any necessary repairs.

Usually, sellers aim for the best potential short-term return on decor investment, not on long-term construction returns.

As well as kitchen overhauls, here are a few common “outdated” problems: • Paint color trends now change every year in sync with fashion. The “shades of grey” look is out and color is back. If you have older beige or pink-green color schemes, buyers may discount your home’s value dramatically.

• Wallpaper is in again, but if you don’t have current wallpaper styles (including ease of removal), you’ve got a home that represents hours of scraping — not a task most buyers want to spend top-dollar to inherit.

• Stainless steel appliances and brushed nickel finishes were mandatory for years, but they are beginning to fade in popularity. Gold is the new hot metal color even though it hasn’t made it to appliances yet. Buyers want new, matching, preferably high-end appliances. How do yours rate?

• Floating bathroom vanities or at least vanities with slender, exposed legs are

the new norm. Old chunky cabinets, especially those without double sinks, will generate expensive “gut job” reactions from buyers.

• Solar panels and gas fireplaces have come down in price and so have increased in popularity in many locations. Skip these trends and your home may be considered “outdated” even though you have a new furnace and a classic wood-burning fireplace.

“Needs up-dating ” responses from buyers mean they see renovation dollar signs instead of the value that sellers believe they live with.

Staging can add cosmetic cleverness, but there still may be a few renovation projects necessary. Staging distracts from negatives and enhances positives with strategic furniture placement, scaled-down furniture, “want to-have” pieces, and refreshing repaints. These elements can do a lot to enhance market value, but they cannot overshadow a seriously outof-date kitchen or a poorly maintained exterior.

A real estate professional’s thorough evaluation of market value for your property should include a list of simple and more-complex up-dates that may add to your bottom line.

Remember, sellers should concentrate on what target buyers want in their “dream home,” not on what sellers have been comfortable living with for years.

As coach, Olympian shares with students her stories of life on and off the ice

No matter the age, skating is a great metaphor for life, she said.

“We fall every single day.

We all have challenges,” she said. “But it doesn’t matter, because it’s important that you just get up every single time.

Teaching [my students] how to fall and then get up is an important life lesson.”

On her Instagram feed, Nagasu charmingly shares that philosophy as well, showcasing not just the beauty of her skating but also the stumbles and falls that even champions take on occasion.

Last month she received another award – this time her Bachelor of Arts degree in business from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

“I’m not sure what will be next,” she said. “Maybe getting my MBA. I will always stay in skating in one way or another.

But I am excited to see what other opportunities are out there as well. “

Mirai Nagasu

By Bonnie Adams Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH – Ever since Mirai Nagasu won the U.S. senior ladies’ title in 2008 when she was only 14-years-old, she has thrilled ice skating fans with her elegant yet powerful performances. Nagasu is also a two-time Olympian, competing in Vancouver in 2010, where she came in fourth and then winning a Bronze medal with Team USA in Pyeongchang in 2018. At that competition, she was the first US female skater to land the difficult triple axel at the Winter Olympic games.

Now, Nagasu has brought her talent and skills to Westborough, to join the coaching staff at the North Star Figure Skating Club.

But it is not just the technical side of skating that Nagasu will impart to her young students. She will also be sharing many of the life lessons she has learned along the way.

So how did a skater who grew up in California and has trained and skated all over the world end up in Westborough, Mass.?

“I have skated many times in Boston, including the 2016 World Championships,” she

said. “I really fell in love with the region over time.”

It was actually an earlier event in Boston, the 2014 National Championships, that really showed the type of strength and grace this skater has off the ice. In spite of coming in third at that event, she was not named to the team that would represent the USA at the Sochi Olympics that year. Officials instead chose Ashley Wagner who was deemed to have more international experience.

In spite of that heartbreak Nagasu took the high road, earning her praise for her sportsmanship.

This past June she also had another important reason to be in Boston when she had hip surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital.

“I am not yet cleared to jump yet but soon, I hope,” she said.

Although she is no longer competing, she does still enjoy performing and hopes to be able to do that when life resumes normalcy again.

Now, as a coach, Nagasu loves to work with adults as well as kids, she said.

“Kids have less fear but adults have that genuine and passionate interest,” she said.

Obituaries Lucille G. Monti, 89

Oct. 11, 1931 ~ Dec. 18, 2020 MARLBOROUGH - Lucille G. (Blais) Monti, of Marlborough, passed away peacefully at the age of 89, s u r ro u n d e d by her family, after a period of declining health. Lucille was blessed to be in her home under the care of Antoinette Khai, whom she treated as a daughter. They both loved each other as family.

She was born Oct. 11, 1931 in Derby Line, Vt. to Elphege and Angeline (Pomerleau) Blais.

She had been the wife of the late Louis P. Monti, who died September 2016. They were married for over 60 years.

Lucille is survived by her eight children, Stephen and his wife Katheryne of Marlborough, Christopher and his wife Bianca of Framingham, Louis Jr. and his wife Cindy of Marlborough, Peter of Beacon Falls, Conn., Anthony Sr. and his wife Rhonda of Marlborough, Patricia Monti of Orlando, Fla., Ann-Marie Rosen and her husband Bob of Davenport, Fla., and Rose MontiJohnson and her husband Rafael of Marlborough. Lucille had 21 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren of whom she was very proud. Dolores Fleming, 89 SHREWSBURY - Dolores Elizabeth (Gomes) Fleming, 89, formerly of Palmer, passed away peacefully at her home in Shrewsbury on Dec. 15, 2020. Dolores, known to most as Lorrie, was born Oct. 12, 1931 in Ware, to parents Emma R. (Girouard) Gomes and Lionel Gomes.

Lorrie is survived by her beloved husband, John L. Fleming; daughter Leslie and her husband Robert (Bob) Kenney; and much adored granddaughter, Jacqueline Kenney, all of Shrewsbury.

Services were private. Chiampa Funeral Home of Shrewsbury assisted with arrangements.

John W.D. Chase, 65 UPTON - Major John W.D. Chase, 65, of Upton, passed away peacefully at Rose Monahan Hospice, Worcester, on Dec. 12, 2020 after a year’s battle with cancer.

John was predeceased by his father, Donald A. Chase, and brother, Richard (Ricky) Chase.

He is survived by his mother, Penny Downey of Northborough; brother Michael J. Chase

of Laconia, N.H.; and brother Randall C. Services and burial were private at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. A memorial celebration of his life will be held by his family at a future date. Roney Funeral Home in North Grafton assisted the family with arrangements.

Will was born Aug. 15, 1928 in Clinton, a son of the late Camillo and Teresa (Cecchini) Masciarelli.

Joseph A. Loycano, 85 MARLBOROUGH - Joseph A. Loycano, 85, of Marlborough, died Dec. 16, 2020 at Marlborough Hospital of Covid-19 complications. He was the husband of Carole M. Loycano.

He leaves behind three daughters, Cynthia Loycano of Northbridge, Elizabeth Trudeau and her husband Stephen of Shrewsbury, and Catherine Kennedy and her husband Michael of Shrewsbury, and two sons, Joseph Loycano and his wife Maryse of Milford and Raymond Loycano, who resides in Florida.

He leaves eight grandchildren who meant the world to him, Jennifer, Emily, Stephen, Kathlene, Caitlin, Hannah, Joseph and Elizabeth.

A memorial service is being planned for him at a later date, when the family can bring people together safely.

Timothy F. Keane, 82 LONGMEADOW - Timothy F. Keane 82, formerly of Shrewsbury, of Longmeadow, passed away peacefully at his residence Dec. 17, 2020. He was born Dec. 10, 1938 to Timothy and Katherine (Davenport) Keane in Somerville. He met his beloved wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Cooney) Keane, marrying on Oct. 30, 1965 and enjoying over 50 years of marriage together..

Timothy and Betty raised their two children, Michael F. and Timothy J., in Shrewsbury, and had a wonderful group of friends who enjoyed many adventures together. Timothy began his State career as a

Quality Control Specialist at the Department of Transitional Assistance in 1969 and cherished the many friendships he made there.

A visitation period was held Dec. 22 at the Chiampa Funeral Home of Shrewsbury, followed by his funeral Mass at St. John’s Church of Worcester and interment with military honors at St. John’s Cemetery.

David D. Haig Jr., 89 SHREWSBURY - David D. Haig, Jr., 89, of Shrewsbury, a long-time pharmacist, passed away Dec. 18, 2020 at UMass Hospital.

David is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Barbara (Tibbetts) Haig; a son, John Haig; a dear family friend, Sampson Asumadu, who David considered another son; and nieces and nephews, including his brother’s children, Ross J. Haig and Jean M. Haig. David was predeceased by a son, David Haig III, and by his twin brother, Kenneth M. Haig.
