SHREWSBURY - A live LinkedIn broadcast was held Dec. 21 in lieu of a ribbon cutting to announce the opening of Cytiva’s new 80,000 square foot manufacturing facility located on Route 9 East.

“Today is an exciting day as we are opening our new Shrewsbury manufacturing facility,” Senior Communications Manager Colleen Connolly stated as she kicked off the broadcast.

A global life sciences leader, Cytiva has more than 7,000 associates in 40 countries dedicated to accelerating therapeutics. There are three sites in Massachusetts — Marlborough, Westborough and now Shrewsbury.

Connolly served as emcee of the live broadcast and as she introduced Mary Blenn, vice president, global supply chain and Jon Van Pelt, general manager, bioprocess single use & enterprise solutions, each provided remarks relevant to the facility’s accelerated build-out that took only five months to complete.

Shrewsbury Parks & Recreation to offer fun family activities this winter

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY –The Parks & Recreation Department is planning an event for families to do as well as a host of other things for this winter.

“It’s a little different and we are trying to think outside the box with the issues at hand and the world and restrictions and what people can and cannot do,” explained Recreation Supervisor Gary Grindle.

Cardboard sledding anyone? Mark your calendars for Saturday, Jan. 30. Check in is 9 a.m. at Dean Park. This event is another way that families can exercise their creativity by designing, building and decorating a sled from all the delivery boxes left over from the holidays.

In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, all participants must pre-register. Registration and rules can be found by visiting www. shrewsburyma.gov/parkrec. Prizes will be awarded.

“We were looking for fun family events,” Grindle added. “We are outside in a safe environment following safety guidelines and families can work together.”

Other outdoor events include a scavenger hunt, winter craft workshops, a virtual ice fishing clinic and, hopefully, ice fishing at the Dean Park Pond.

Changes needed for Westborough High School track’s lighting To the Editor: We are writing in response to the Community Advocate online article dated January 7th, 2021 regarding the Westborough School Committee’s defense of the lighting at the high-school fields (https://www.communityadvocate.com/2021/01/07/westboroughschool-committee-1-7).

Neighborhood residents have been asking the school to share their protocol for management of the lights and to the sound, and the scheduling/ control of night games, for 3 years and still have received nothing. Those who live near the track see the lights on during snow, sleet and rain, with no one on the track, despite what the meeting members stated.

There are creative solutions which many of us have seen at other facilities and could be implemented in Westborough, including having a switch that users can activate, with a timer that turns them off at a set period of time. Another is to have a set of lower lights for walkers, that do not have as serious an impact on the neighbors as the banks of field lights that blare into people’s backyards and bedroom windows.

The school speaks of respecting the neighbors, but many of us have seen little evidence of this, and without a voted upon, management protocol, which the school seems not willing to provide, there is not even a launching point for discussion.

United we stand REGION - This has been one of the most tumultuous years in the history of our nation. Two of the largest challenges were an unprecedented pandemic and an ever-widening political divide.

Beginning on Inauguration Day, President-elect Joe Biden faces a monumental task as he tries to re-unite the country which is so divided. On top of that, he is also facing the harsh realities of COVID-19 which, so far, has killed over 300,000 Americans.

The truth is, however, it’s not up to Biden alone – we all must do our part to help bring peace and unity back to our country. If we are to stand tall again as a united nation, we must remember that there is more that unites us than divides us and we all play a role in our return to civility and acceptance of others.

erators and decanters both expose wine to air, but they do so in different ways. An aerator (either hand-held or mounted on a stand) is ideal for mingling air with wine as it is poured from a bottle, through the aerating device, and into one glass at a time. Aeration is a rapid process that is intended to improve the aromas and flavors, especially in young, red wines. A wide-bottomed, glass decanter expands the surface area of the wine that is exposed to air. Decanting is a slower but still effective way to aerate an entire bottle of wine at one time. Pouring wine from a decanter tends to add a touch of elegance to wine service.

An old wine (10+ years) should not be aerated, but the sediment must be removed. If you’re serving an old wine at its peak, it won’t benefit from aeration, as it’s fully developed. New Hudson budget avoids service cuts amid COVID-19 uncertainty

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer HUDSON – Non-union employees won’t get traditional cost of living raises, this year.

But Hudson will stave off deep budget cuts in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Executive Assistant Tom Moses told the Select Board, Jan. 5.

With uncertainty remaining over levels of state and federal aid to municipalities, Moses presented what he described as a flexible but lean proposal.

The Select Board approved the budget.

“There haven’t been a whole lot of additions,” Moses said. “…[Department] budgets have barely increased.”

Preparing for FY2022 Hudson is gearing up for the 2022 fiscal year, which starts July 1. This process follows months of hand wringing for municipal administrators, last year, as the coronavirus tanked local economies, decreasing tax revenues and forcing towns to rely on state aid just

Despite fears, that state aid eventually did come to Hudson in the 2021 fiscal year thanks primarily to a move to dip into Massachusetts’ “rainy day fund” of emergency dollars.

Now, though, that very decision has people like Moses anticipating the possibility of a drop-off in funding, this year, if coffers run dry and the economy continues its stall.

“I’m not sure where they’re going to get [that money] from,” Select Board Chair Joe Durant said during budget discussions.

As dire as things could be, Moses reiterated that department budgets now approved by the Select Board will allow Hudson to continue operating and serving constituents via its own rainy day fund.

“We are positioned well to be able to fund whatever shortfall does arise,” Durant said, discussing the same topic. “But we have to be extremely careful with spending this year.”

For Hudson, that means delaying those aforementioned cost of living raises for nonunion employees.

The town is also pushing back some of its capital plan projects, like the now completed South St. or Wood Square Rotary redesign efforts.

Community Aggregate Program reports significant savings for Marlborough residents MARLBOROUGH - The Colonial Power Group, Marlborough’s aggregate broker, reported third quarter savings of over $78,000 for residents who take part in the city’s Community Choice Power Supply Program, according to a press release from Mayor Arthur Vigeant’s office.

The city contracted with energy supplier Inspire Energy in August for a $0.09390 per kWh. for all rate classes; this rate will be in effect until January 2024. This program is a municipal aggregation that enables local government to combine the purchasing power on behalf of its residents and businesses to provide them with an alternative to National Grid Basic Service (M.G.L. c.

164, § 134). By leveraging its purchasing power, the city is able to negotiate a lower rate.

Marlborough currently has

12,800 customers in its Community Choice Power Supply Program and anticipates a greater savings in the fourth quarter as National Grid’s winter rate of $0.12.388 took effect on November 1, 2020.

National Grid’s basic rate changes twice a year, in May and November.

“The City has an aggregation committee chaired by Council President Michael Ossing that reviews rates and trends and goes out to bid to get the best possible rate for our residents. Although it’s pennies on the dollar, it adds up to a significant savings for both residential and commercial customers,” Vigeant said.

SHREWSBURY - News broke just before the New Year’s holiday that more than 25 acres along Route 9 westbound had been purchased by Boch Shrewsbury — Worcester, for $8.35 million.

Worcester commercial real estate firm NAI Glickman Kovago & Jacobs handled the sale between the Lilly Attell Realty Trust who sold the property to Boch Shrewsbury — Worcester, an entity run by Ernest A. Boch, Jr. and Robert C. Weiss of 111 Morse St., Norwood, Mass. according to Massachusetts Secretary of State records. Boch is famed for his automotive empire.

The site, just past the Route 9 and South Street intersection, at 701 and 713 Boston Turnpike, is largely wooded and undeveloped. According to town records, the property includes a 1,600-square-foot, singlefamily home with an assessed value of $714,800.

Another half-acre property abutting the property at 713 Boston Turnpike was also purchased by the entity. The sellers were Tim and Eileen Samara and it includes a 1,100 square foot single family home assessed at $280,600, according to town 2021 property values.

Reaction from officials and residents Social media comments ranged from concerns over increased traffic along the Route 9 corridor to questions over whether another auto dealership was warranted because the site is very near other dealerships along the Route 9 corridor.

However, other social media comments were positive citing support for new economic growth and additional tax revenue.

Pickleball courts may be coming to Northborough

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH – The Northborough Community Preservation Committee (CPC) held a public hearing on Jan. 7 to discuss funding applications for Fiscal Year 2022. The Recreation Department’s $290,250 funding request for pickleball courts at Ellsworth McAfee Park will now be voted on at town meeting in April.

The CPC is responsible for the expenditures authorized by the adoption of the Community Preservation Act (CPA). The CPA is a funding tool to assist communities with the protection and acquisition of open space, preservation of historic resources and the creation of affordable housing.

Currently, Northborough’s only pickleball court is at the Town hall gym, which is currently closed to the public.

Pickleball is a paddleboard sport that combines badminton, table tennis and tennis.

The sport is especially enjoyed by the senior population, but it is gaining popularity with all ages and abilities.

The courts will be wheelchair accessible.

Recreation Department Director Allie Lane said there is a large pickleball community from Northborough and surrounding communities. Residents have expressed their interest in outdoor courts.

Six courts are being proposed, and the cost includes demolition of the land, drainage, fencing, and the installation of the courts. The Recreation Department and Department of Public Works (DPW) will be responsible for the maintenance of the courts, which will be minimal.

“I know the people who play this game and the passion they have for it,” Lane said.

Other locations were considered, such as the Northborough Senior Center, but it is more cost efficient to put the courts at the park.

DPW Director Scott Charpentier said it would have been $100,000 more to clear land at the senior center and parking would have been an issue.

The proposed location is central and always has a lot of people around.

Charpentier agreed that the location makes logical sense as it will utilize a portion of town land that is underutilized.

Scouting has always been a part of her family – her brother, cousins, uncles, and grandfathers have been a part of the scouting experience. She always enjoyed participating in the trips and events that her brother’s troop held that included families.

“Ellie is a great example of what it is to be a scout,” said McDonald. “She steps up to help lead the Troop. She supports younger scouts and brings her enthusiasm to all she does. She has a passion for camping and the outdoors that has been a joy to share.”

Stalcup’s final project was the creation and installation of the first Little Free Pantry in Northborough. She said that the idea was modeled after the Little Free Library program.

Stalcup will be officially recognized as part of the national inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts in February and will celebrate with family and friends at a future Court of Honor when COVID restrictions are lifted and it can be done safely.

Marlborough police and fire receive grants

By Ron Ayotte, Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH - The Marlborough police and fire departments recently accepted $15,500 in grant money to make improvements in public safety.

The Marlborough police received a grant for the amount of $6,000 from the Brigham Family Trust to offset the cost of conducting the Youth Police Academy. The grant application was written by Lieutenant Daniel Campbell on behalf of the department, detailing the need for the department to upgrade equipment for the MILO range system and CPR equipment, which is used during the course of the academy.

While the Academy was not conducted during 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is anticipated that it will run in 2021.

The Marlborough Fire Department received a grant in the amount of $9,500 from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). The grant, written by retired Assistant Chief and present Emergency Management Director Frederick Flynn, will be used for communication equipment upgrades (new portable radios for the Fire Department, and ham radio unit for the City’s Emergency Operations Center), two additional automatic external cardiac defibrillators (AEDs) and sheltering equipment for the Fire Department.

This grant requires matching funds, which the city has from the Blackboard Connect fund.

Northborough seeks partners, investors for White Cliffs

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - The fate of the historical White Cliffs building in Northborough is still uncertain. At the Dec. 18 White Cliffs Committee meeting, DBVW Architects presented a fourth reuse option after the first three – residential, municipal, and hospitality/ event use – were previously determined not to be economically viable for the town. The option, named Preservation LITE, would be the least costly approach to do minimal building improvements to get it back on the market, but will still leave a funding gap. The town will explore the interest of a

potential partner or investor from the private sector to help this option become a reality.

Town Administrator John Coderre said the town has paid for the acquisition of the facility and the land, and has made minimal restoration improvements to preserve the building envelope, including roof repairs, sealing off the additions, and repairs to the back dormer.

A Request for Proposals (RFP) was discussed. Due to the uniqueness of this project, consulting services would be needed to assist with writing the RFP’s scope of services and creatively attract potential partners, who have the ability to restore the building to get

“Under normal times this is a fantastic business and industry to be in with tremendous growth but given the onset of COVD-19 we just saw unprecedented demand and unprecedented need from our

customers,” Blenn explained.

“What we did was accelerate our capacity expansion plans and we are investing over $500 million over the next five years and this site here in Shrewsbury is just the first step.”

Van Pelt congratulated his team for setting the site up in record time especially considering the pandemic.

“We are at a very interesting phase in single use because in the big picture, if you take a step back it’s still relatively in its infancy as an industry norm…” he said.

Their customer base will be well served by the flexibility that the Shrewsbury site can provide, he noted.

And Cytiva’s capacity expansion will enhance the development of drugs, therapeutics and vaccines for their

customers who are fighting COVID-19.

As such, the site human resource manager, Anita Desai, said that they will be recruiting talent to accommodate this growth.

“With our new site opening here in Shrewsbury in parallel we are also creating an additional 10,000 square feet of cleanroom operation space at our Westborough facility so with our local expansions we do plan to hire nearly 200 associates over the next several months to work in Shrewsbury and Westborough,” stated Desai.

Specific criteria would be used by the Committee to evaluate the viability of any project proposals received.

“The priorities for me would be to preserve the historical aspects of the building to the extent possible inside and out and minimally the streetscape and to minimize the additional cost if any to the taxpayers to do that,” said Coderre.

Access for public to historic portion Another priority would be to have some public access to at least the historic part of the building.

Currently, the White Cliffs account balance is shy of $190,000. These funds need to cover standing monthly costs, unexpected costs as well as costs associated with the RFP process. Although short-term repairs can be made to the chimney, the longer it is left, the more deterioration will occur. The estimated cost to fully repair it is $100,000.

An alternative to the RFP process would be to seek money at the town meeting in April to do more preservation work on the building.

“The alternative is that the town taxpayers in one form or another would be required to pay the balance to preserve the building and that would be a difficult sell in my opinion,” said Coderre.

Select Board supports Armory grant application

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer HUDSON - Select Board members voted Jan. 5, to back a fresh step in a local nonprofit’s effort to buy the downtown armory for use as a performing arts center.

Split along a 4-1 vote, the Board endorsed a grant application by the Hudson Cultural Alliance after brief confusion over whether the Alliance plans to seek taxpayer funding for their purchase.

“I do not support using town money for this,” Board Member Scott Duplisea said before the vote. “...[But] I’m hoping that they can do this. I’m hoping that it becomes a reality.”

The Alliance wants to raise $230,000 to buy and refurbish the Armory as a new venue for local organizations like the River’s Edge Arts Alliance.

Colonero retires from SALMON Health and Retirement WESTBOROUGH —After nearly 30 years at SALMON Health and Retirement, Ben Colonero is retiring the company recently announced.

Colonero’s career with SALMON started with Danny Salmon, who he knew, he said, from growing up in the Blackstone Valley.

At a baseball tournament that both their sons were playing in, “we started talking, and Danny mentioned that if I was ever looking for a job, that I should reach out to him,” he added.

From there, Colonero’s expansive career with SALMON began.

“My first position at SALMON was as a controller, more commonly known as a financial officer, in 1992,” Colonero said. “My office was in Beaumont at Westborough, and at that time, we only had two campuses—Westborough and Northbridge.”

After a little over two years in this role, Colonero was offered a position as Executive Director

“I was surprised,” explained Colonero. “I had never considered that type of job before, but Danny recognized my abilities and had confidence in me—I’m so glad he did, because it was fantastic; I absolutely loved the job.”

Colonero was the Executive Director in Westborough for almost 25 years; during this time, the campus expanded with the addition of Whitney Place.

“I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Residents,” he said.

“They had accomplished so much in their lives, and I learned a lot from them. I had the opportunity to get to know each Resident personally, and it was great.”

Colonero’s own mother became a Resident at Beaumont at Westborough in February 2020. Nancy Colonero was the first Resident to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in SALMON’s communities.

“Seeing her receive the vaccine was incredible,” he said.

Northborough/Southborough Schools to expand COVID-19 testing to students

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH SOUTHBOROUGH – The Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough Superintendent Greg Martineau and District Wellness Coordinator Mary Ellen Duggan, MEd, BSN, RN discussed future COVID-19 testing at the Jan. 6 Northborough School Committee meeting.

The deadline to use the federal CARES Act funding issued to towns was extended from Dec. 30 through June. Martineau will continue to partner with the towns to continue weekly staff testing and to expand it to all students.

There are restrictions on how the CARES Act funding can be expended, but testing is an accepted option.

“We are close to making a decision which is exciting,” said Martineau. “This is another part of our mitigation

efforts. Testing was always one of those layers we wanted to add.”

“At one point we thought we were going to have to fundraise to implement this testing,” said Martineau. “The great news is that is no longer an obstacle.”

The extended time to expend those funds gives the

Westborough School Committee discusses lighting at high school

By Susan Gonsalves, Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Westborough School Committee Chair Kristen Vincent said that the high school track is a valuable community resource.

During the committee’s Jan. 6 meeting, Vincent said that she was addressing concerns expressed on social media about lighting at that facility.

She explained that the lights are typically on after school during the winter for practices. She cited members of the track and ski teams as examples of people who use it. The district also anticipates running sports in February and March.

Vincent said the lights on the main field turn off at 5:45 p.m. with two remaining on until 8 p.m.

Community members can and do use the track for jogging, walking and other exercise.

“It’s a safe place to work out and easy to see where you are walking,” Vincent said.

The lights are turned off if the track is unusable because of snow and unsafe conditions.

Superintendent Amber Bock noted that she was recently at the track at around 7 p.m. and five people were working out at the time.

“It’s a site that is gaining more use,” she said.

The superintendent said that it costs $150 per month for the LED lights and that gate fees generally offset those costs.

When the track was being renovated, she added, a lot of community members expressed interest in having access to it. “(We) have a close relationship with our neighbors and try to meet the needs of the broader community,” Bock said.

Sudden move offers good and bad news for local fans The Providence Bruins play in the American Hockey League, serving as the primary minor league team beneath the Boston Bruins.

Their slate of games slashed

by COVID-19, the team will play from early February through the first weeks of May, taking the ice in Marlborough behind closed doors.

Due to COVID-19, fans will not be able to attend games.

That news has local fans somewhat disappointed as does the news that this move is only temporary.

The Providence Bruins will return to their home at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Rhode Island next year as that facility is only unavailable, this winter, because of ongoing coronavirus testing there.

Still, officials even at the top of the Bruins organization are thanking Marlborough.

“Given the unprecedented circumstances, we are very grateful that the New England Sports Center can host the team this season,” Bruins President Cam Neely said in that Jan. 4 statement.

Marlborough’s Mark Evangelous netted the go-ahead goal midway through the second period. Marcus Chrisafidies and Collin Tunnera also scored for Marlborough. Algonquin’s goals were scored by Gregory Grimaldi and Jack Gulachenski.

A number of COVID-19 precautions are in place for this season. The game is played in two extended periods instead of the traditional three, masks are required at all times, locker rooms are closed and players arrive directly in uniforms, and fans are not allowed to attend.

Hudson hockey coach reflects on 31-year career

From player to teacher and then coach Raised in Hudson, Nanartowich played hockey for the Hawks under longtime coach and athletic director Bill Bissett. Nanartowich eventually graduated in 1983 before moving on to play baseball at Springfield College.

He spent his first two years out of college working at Marlborough High School as a science teacher and athletic trainer, intermittently also skating with that school’s hockey team.

Quickly, Nanartowhich says, Marlborough’s then coach John Butler began pushing him towards his own coaching and education dreams.

HUDSON - Mike Nanartowhich is one of the longest tenured high school hockey coaches in Massachusetts. Enjoying a career he says he’s always wanted, Nanartowich is now reflecting on three decades of rivalries, championships, and a fair share of screaming matches with referees.

Indeed, Nanartowich will soon start his 31st season at the helm of the Hudson Hawks boys’ varsity hockey team. In those years, he has led his program to a state championship and over a dozen conference titles, earning respect from across the state along the way.

“I’ve kind of always wanted to coach,” he explained in a recent interview.

“I always wanted to teach and to coach but John was really the inspiration and the fire to get going on it,” he says.

Nanartowhich came back to Hudson in 1988 where he started work as an assistant coach for his old hockey team.

He opened those days, he says, with a no-nonsense promise to Bissett. — “I’m gonna make this program great.”

Within a year, Bissett resigned his coaching job and promoted Nanartowich.

“He wanted to leave [the head coaching job] to a Hudson guy,” Nanartowhich says. “So, when I took it, I was ready for the job.”

Young and suddenly holding the coaching position he’d always wanted, Nanartowhich said he shed quiet tears of joy as the Hudson School Committee approved his coaching appointment.

As Bruins come to town, local connections abound Though a NESC spokesperson declined a Community Advocate request for comment for this article, there are existing local connections between the Providence Bruins and Marlborough.

Renfroe, the NESC owner, also owns the Providence Bruins. He’s expanded his Marlborough facility multiple times and has, with that growth, hosted exhibition preseason contests for the Bruins.

Providence’s AHL competitor, the Worcester Sharks, also

intermittently used the NESC as a practice facility before relocating to San Jose in 2015.

Nearby Hudson, meanwhile, just celebrated a player with local connections signing an entry-level contract with the broad Bruins organization.

Indeed, Matt Filipe may see ice time in Marlborough this winter. He is the son of Paul Filipe, who, himself, won a state championship playing for Hudson High School in 1978 before playing for the Northeastern Huskies and the Boston Bruins, respectively, according to the Northeastern website.

“I still bleed Hawk red,” he says. “I break out in a rash whenever I see [Marlborough] black and orange.”

Recalling a rivalry with Marlborough In 2000, already more than a decade into his coaching career, Nanartowhich led an un-

defeated Hudson team into Marlborough’s Navin Ice Rink to face a similarly dominant Panther squad.

The building was packed, Nanartowich says. In the front row of the Hudson cheering section, meanwhile, Seamus Veo, a student, had his chest painted in prominent support of the team. Veo now works with the Hudson Police as the HHS resource officer.

Butler, Nanartowhich’s former mentor, was also there.

“We kind of looked over to each other and said ‘This is going to be fun,’” Nanartowhich explains.

Sharing credit as a controversial coach Nanartowich can rattle off hundreds of stories of games like that Marlborough matchup.

Many involve his personal competition with Butler. Still more defer credit for his own success to Hudson players.

“I’ve had tremendous athletes playing for me,” Nanartwoich says. “...I love my kids for the

effort that they always give me.”

Though he’s revered in Hudson and around the state, Nanartowich’s reputation isn’t necessarily one of spotless deification.

Some family members of players have their criticisms of Nanartowich. He also regularly berates officials he thinks miss calls during games.

“I can be fiery, but we’re fighting for our kids,” he says. “We live and die with our kids every single day. [The officials] get that.”

Retirement looming Nanartowich says he plans to retire soon. His son is playing hockey on his own so he wants to see him in action more.

In the meantime, though, Nanartowich is also just trying to navigate an unprecedented season of winter sports during COVID-19. The schedule is shortened. There will be restrictions in place. And Nanartowich still wants to keep winning through it all.

“We’ll see what happens,” he says.

Hudson resident helps launch National Museum of Mental Health Project, Inc.

he National Museum of Mental Health Project, Inc. (NMMHP), a group initially formed in 2019, has been incorporated as a not-for-profit organization with an expanded mission to develop virtual exhibits that transform society’s understanding of mental health.

The work of NMMHP founders Paul Piwko, a professor in the Grenon School of Business at Assumption University, and Alexandra Orlandi, a Hudson resident, AU alumna and Mental Health Specialist at McLean Hospital, initially focused on researching and publishing the benefits of mental health exhibitions. Prior to the pandemic, the display of mental health exhibitions in museums, airports, and malls was increasing. NMMHP now seeks to expand this trend from brick-and-mortar establishments to the internet at a time when museums are increasing their online visibility and the COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented need for mental health resources.

NMMHP exhibitions will promote mental health literacy by sharing personal narratives and expanding vocabulary.

about reading textbooks, listening to lectures, or seeing a therapist. Learning is also observing and exploring,” Orlandi said.

NMMHP is currently developing its first exhibition, I Get It, which will launch in 2021 on its website NMMHProject. org and via social media. The website was designed by Assumption alumna Kate Kruzick and launched via Wifi hotspot from the grounds of the Medfield State Hospital Cemetery–a place of early inspiration for the Project.

Although NMMHP seeks a national audience for its research and exhibitions, all

founding board members are residents of MetroWest and Worcester County. Piwko and board secretary Anne Walton are Milford residents, and Orlandi lives in Hudson. Piwko and Orlandi completed a research fellowship about mental health exhibitions and have been published by numerous news outlets, including the Des Moines Register, the Omaha World-Herald, and the MetroWest Daily News. They

The studio offers a variety of classes from ballet and jazz to hip hop and musical theater.

They focus on fun and friendship, not competition.

Adapting to the restrictions of the pandemic Last year they had to postpone their recital from June to September. It was held outdoors at Vandervalk Farm in Mendon.

They broke the day into segments so family members could

watch while following safety guidelines.

Lynsey described that during the planning process they went from Plan A, all the way to Plan Z. And they are prepared to do whatever they need to in 2021 to be there for their students.

“It’s cool to develop relationships with our students whether in the classroom or virtual. It’s become almost a core part of how we teach now.

We’ve learned things that will be beneficial even in the future,” Lynsey said. For example, color squares on the floor to maintain social distance can also be used as a fun learning tool.

They are doing their best to maintain value even when the classes are virtual and believe this model has helped them stay strong this year. Students can easily switch to being virtual if they need to do so.

Casey Reuter Durkin, 39 NORTHBOROUGH/LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Casey Reuter Durkin, a longtime resident of Northborough and Los Angeles, passed away peacefully on Dec. 22, 2020.

Whether on stage as a ballerina, professional actor, model, or comedian, her effervescent personality, vulnerability, bravery, and candor captured hearts at her homes on the West and East coasts. Casey earned her place as your loyal friend, trusted confidant, biggest cheerleader and best audience.

Casey leaves her mother, Barbara Johnson Durkin; her fathers, Michael L. Durkin and Michael Reuter; her sister, Molly Durkin; sister, Danielle Reuter; and her beloved uncles, aunts and cousins. She leaves us all wanting more, but as

Casey would remind us, this show must – and will – go on.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 5 at St. Mary’s Parish of Shrewsbury, with burial in Howard Street Cemetery of Northborough. Hays Funeral Home of Northborough assisted with arrangements.

Morgan J. Byrne, 78 MARLBOROUGH - Morgan J. Byrne, 78, died unexpectedly Dec. 28, 2020 at his home.

He was born in Concord, the son of the late Morgan and Elizabeth (Molloy) Byrne and lived in Marlborough for many years.

Mr. Byrne was a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He later went on to work in the paper manufacturing industry for many years. He was a member of the AMVETS Post 1980 in Marlborough, the Marlborough Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Loyal Order of Moose in Marlborough.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen Kelley of Marlborough; a sister, Barbara Hennigan of Marlborough; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private. Short & Rowe Funeral Home of Marlborough assisted with arrangements.

Donald W. Bean, 85 SHREWSBURY - Donald W. “Don” “The Professor” Bean, 85, passed away Dec. 23, 2020. He was the devoted hu sb a nd o f Roberta L. (Neary) Bean for 62 years.

Besides his loving wife Roberta, Don is survived by his children, Robert Bean and his wife Michelle of Marlborough, Dr. Stephen Bean and his wife Karen of Shrewsbury, and Donna Puopolo and her husband Louis of Naples, Fla.; eight grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; his brother, Mark Perreault and his wife Sybille of Whispering Pines, N.C., as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Lorenzo and Ruth (Sutherland) Bean, and his granddaughter, Tara Katherine Bean.

Services will be held at a future date. The Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
