MARLBOROUGH - The Marlborough Police Department was recently notified that they had been awarded a grant for $6,000 from the Marlborough Brigham Family Trust. These funds are to be used for the Youth Police Academy to be held in the summer, primarily for equipment and supplies.

The Westborough/Hopkinton High School Gymnastics team won their opening meet of the season over Hudson 129.650 to 129.4 on Jan. 19.

And on Jan. 22, the Algonquin Regional High School boys’ basketball team opened their season with a 63-53 win over Shrewsbury.

Once again, Trump is above the law. Any other person who incited a rebellion would have been arrested and face charges in a court of law.

It’s astonishing that there is no way to hold this president accountable. Once again, he will get away with murder and most of his Republican Senators will just refuse to take action. We have a little noise from Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Is it too little, too late?

I want him to resign,” Ms. Murkowski said in an inter-

view with The Anchorage Daily News. “I want him out. He has caused enough damage.”

In the first Senate impeachment trial Murkowski announced that she could not vote to convict President Donald Trump but nevertheless called his actions “shameful and wrong.” Shameful and wrong. This is how I would describe the lack of courage of the Republican Senators who refused to listen to reason.

Pat Toomey called the president’s more recent conduct “a significant escalation. I don’t think his unbelievable behavior from Wednesday could have been reasonably expected.”

But wait, Mr.Toomey, remember Adam Schiff’s closing remarks from the first impeachment?

“You know you can’t trust this President to do what’s

right for this country. You can trust he will do what’s right for Donald Trump. He’ll do it now.

He’s done it before. He’ll do it for the next several months.

He’ll do it in the election if he’s allowed to. This is why if you find him guilty, you must find that he should be removed.

Because right matters. Because right matters and the truth matters. Otherwise, we are lost.” --Adam Schiff Perhaps Toomey missed this but lots of us didn’t. Where were the Republican Senators a year ago when the opportunity was there to remove this dangerous president? They were silent. They did not convict and now we are in a very dangerous time. None of these Republican Senators should have been reelected but they were.

But as all Brady fans know, you should never count this superstar out. And although it will be bittersweet to see Brady face off against 25-year-old Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Ball LV, many fans are exited to see the GOAT potentially make history again.

Mellow Merlot

M

erlot grapes are the second most-planted red wine grape in the United States. Here many of these blue-black grapes are made into single varietal wines rather than used primarily as a blending grape to smooth tannins in Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot grapes can be made into juicy, easy-to-drink wines that are fruit-forward, with aromas of ripe, sweet cherries, chocolate, and hints of vanilla from oak aging.

These low-tannin, medium-bodied wines have silky, sensuous textures on the palate and do not require detailed analysis to enjoy. Since many Merlot wines lack high levels of acid, tannin, and complexity of structure, aging is unnecessary as wines will not improve with time. Serve them young with casual daily fare.

It is a common belief that you should serve red wines at room temperature. While this was true in the days before heating and air conditioning, today’s room temperature can actually be slightly warm for serving all red wines, including Merlot. In order to enjoy the full flavor profile of the wine, it is important to serve all wines at their ideal temperature. The ideal storage temperature for red wines is at about 60 degrees. Southborough PD accepting applications for full-time officer

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – One Shrewsbury pup, Rocky, is a lucky dog indeed, thanks to the quick work of the Shrewsbury Fire Department.

“At 9:23 this morning we received a call about a dog who had fallen through the ice on Flint Pond,” Captain Frank Ludovico said.

Ludovico said that two engines were dispatched to that location - one with the hovercraft. The hovercraft was deployed with two firefighters and was able to reach the dog.

One of the firefighters in the hovercraft entered the water and was able to retrieve Rocky and bring him back to be reunited with his owner at the boat ramp.

When asked what breed and age the dog was, Ludovico said that he did not know.

Westborough’s MLK Celebration stresses importance of ‘love, inclusion and trust’

WESTBOROUGH – Although this year’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration was held virtually Jan. 18 instead of in person, it was just as powerful and impactful as the two previous years.

Nearly 200 people signed up for the event which was organized by Central MA Connections in Faith, Westborough Interfaith Association,

Westborough Public Schools and Westborough Connects.

During the program, the theme of “Standing In My Shoes: Love, Inclusion, Trust” was emphasized in song, prayer, and by the event’s speakers.

“Be the love that hate can’t stop” The keynote address was given by Jamele Adams, the Brandeis University Dean of Students, who is also a poet and activist known as Har-

lem 1two5. Through his address and interactions with the Zoom attendees, he spoke of the importance of the power of loving others from a place of love.

“Love how I love, who I love,” he said. “If you love children…others…. come at others from that place of love. Be the love that hate can’t stop.”

“There is language that we would not use with some of our most beloved and respected elders,” he added. “Apply that

love in other places.”

It was important to continue to have communication and open dialogue with others as well, he said, especially in a time of racial inequity.

“We have the responsibility to undo justice,” he added, “Politics should not determine how we connect with other people. There’s nothing about violence that communication won’t solve better.”

MARLBOROUGH - Thanks to the generosity of the city’s residents, the Marlborough Democratic City Committee (MDCC) was able to deliver nearly 2,500 pounds of food and personal care items to the Marlborough Community Cupboard Jan. 19. The drive also raised more than $500 in checks and gift cards.

“I want to thank everyone who helped make our first food drive an unqualified success,” said Dan Caruso, MDCC Chairman. “We expected this event would be successful, but we far surpassed what we thought we would collect.”

“I was speechless when all the cars and trucks arrived to unload their contributions,”

said Community Cupboard Director Barbara LaGrenade.

“This was truly amazing and we can’t thank you enough for the support.”

The items donated included nonperishable food, such as pasta, cereal and canned goods, cleaning items, such as cleaning solutions and wipes, and personal care items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste,

LaGrenade said that the pandemic has greatly increased the need for what the Community Cupboard provides. She said the Marlborough site serves about 500 families per month. The Community Cupboard is one of several locations run by United Way of Tri-County. Anyone wanting to make a monetary

donation to the Community Cupboard can log on to www. uwotc.org/donate. Donations of goods can be dropped off at the Community Cupboard, located in the Walker Building, 255 Main Street, Marlborough, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The MDCC will conduct another drive later this year at a time yet to be determined.

Understanding the MassHealth Five-Year Look Back

W

hen a person enters a nursing home on a long-term basis in Massachusetts, there are generally three ways to pay for their care: from their private funds, from a combination of private funds and long-term care insurance, or by applying for Medicaid benefits (MassHealth). Nursing homes typically charge $12,000-$15,000 per month, so most people run out of private funds quickly. If MassHealth is the only option to fund nursing home care, the applicant must complete the infamous MassHealth Long-Term Care application.

For unmarried applicants to be financially eligible for MassHealth, their assets must have been reduced below $2,000. In 2020, for a married applicant who has a spouse living in the community, the couple’s total assets must be reduced below $130,640. It is not enough simply to show current bank statement(s) with a combined balance below the asset limit. The

LOVELY ROCKS Painting rocks with images and messages is a hobby that has followers nationwide. It’s a fun pastime for seniors because it involves art, walking, socialization, and spreading kindness and joy. The movement has many names, including Kindness Rocks and The Traveling Rock Project. Simply paint a rock with acrylic paints and seal it. The image can be simple like a smiley face with the message “Have a nice day,” or something more complex. On the back of the rock, the words “Keep or Re-hide” are written so people know what they can do with the rock.

Sometimes there is a Facebook link on the back for those who are part of a group and want to know who found it.

Once your rocks are painted, go for a walk around your community and place rocks in places where they can be easily found. Once you leave the rock, don’t worry about who will find it or what happens to it. Your goal is to create a positive message for the person who finds it! P.S. Hiding rocks is a great way to spread joy to someone who may really need a boost. The rocks can be hidden in a parking lot, near a store, in a dog park, or any other public place.

Marlborough Police Youth Academy awarded grant from Brigham Family Trust Police grant | from page 1

“Our officers get to meet the kids and their parents and see the community for what it is. On the other side, the families might see the officers around town, and they remember them, have conversations, form good community partnerships. The long-range goals are to give back to the community, help relationships, and make the community safer,” he added. .

Marlborough Brigham Family Trust Thanks to the generosity of Marlborough resident Ronald H. Brigham, his estate has been awarding grants of up to $6,000 to local nonprofits to “promote the general good and the community welfare of the Marlborough, Middlesex County area” since the Brigham Family Trust was established. Charitable organizations designated with 501(c)(3) nonprofit status are encouraged to submit requests for funding for innovative programs that benefit the Marlborough community in a 500-word essay. The winning grants are dispersed in December.

Diverse group of participants At this point, the department plans to keep the age criteria the same for the 2021 Academy. (Because of COVID-19 protocols, the 2020 programs had to be cancelled.) Marlborough residents who are rising seventh graders can fill out applications in mid-March, and the two sessions will run after school is out in June and then again for another week in August. Parents should watch for notices in the local schools as well as social media to know when they can download or pick up an application for their son or daughter.

“We sort of expected there to be more males, but both sessions in 2019 were just about evenly divided between males and females.

Personally, I found the girls

to be more outgoing, and we had a couple of rock star female athletes that were the fastest in the group and even did more push-ups than the boys,” recalled Campbell.

Topics reflect daily police work “We got a lot of great advice and ideas from the Hud-

son Police Department since they have been running a youth academy for years. The idea is to keep the kids busy and engaged, as they thrive in that environment. It’s a good age group; they are mature enough to handle what we offer, and work well in structured environments. Their enthusiasm makes it fun for

everyone,” Campbell said.

The topics presented previously included a K9 demonstration, physical fitness, public speaking, defensive tactics, firearm safety, CPR, SWAT uniform and vehicle presentation, an obstacle course, drug recognition, the MILO system simulator, and even a visit from the Mas-

sachusetts State Police Air Wing helicopter.

“We will probably feature a lot of the same topics; they worked well for the cadets.

Thanks to the grant, we will be able to order the shirts, hats, water bottles and other supplies we’ll need to make it a memorable experience for the kids,” Campbell added.

Southborough decides to postpone Town Meeting until it can be held outside SOUTHBOROUGH - Due to COVID-19 concerns, the Southborough Town Meeting will be postponed for the second year in a row.

“The town meeting will not be happening at its normal time,” said Town Moderator Paul Cimino during the Jan. 19 Board of Selectmen’s meeting. “Now, it can be made official by me that it will be moved.”

The 2021 Town Meeting was originally scheduled for March 20. The new date has not yet been determined but will most likely happen around the end of May or June when the meeting can be held outside.

“I do not see a scenario where we can have it in March,” continued Cimino.

The whole Board agreed with Cimino and the decision to change the date stating it was the safest decision

“The quicker the information is out there, the better,” he said.

Selectman Sam Stivers agreed with Healey and suggested they figure out a new date soon.

“What does that mean to the budget process? We better have answers to that soon,” he said. “It doesn’t mean don’t do anything.”

Soon after the Selectmen meeting, the Board released a statement on the town’s official Twitter account letting the public know of the decision.

“The Board of Selectmen have agreed tonight it is not possible to have a Town Meeting on March 20, 2021.

Stay tuned for continued deliberations on a new date,” the tweet read.

Last year, the Town Meeting happened in June after being originally scheduled for March due to the pandemic. It happened outside at the Trottier Middle School’s soccer and baseball fields.

During the meeting, there were microphones that allowed residents to speak about the issues but from a safe distance from the microphone. Chairs were six feet apart and everyone attending had to wear a mask.

There was no screen but there were handouts given for the presentations.

A favorite memory of many involved stalking him along the route in late August to see if the much anticipated school classroom assignments for the new year were being delivered.

Wendorf said he would often joke about telling the group of kids that were anxiously waiting for the letters that he was going to take his break first.

Wendorf was a consistent worker “You would literally almost set your clock to when he would bring your mail,” said Susan O’Grady. “Blizzards would not even get him off his schedule. Such a great combination – a wonderful man and a wonderful worker.”

He went above and beyond.

“Our daughter and Bob have been pen pals throughout the years,” said Beth Hennessey. “Julie (9) occasionally leaves him notes with her art work and anxiously awaits his reply. His prompt and thoughtful responses always brightens her day.”

Kristen Loizeaux and her family moved to another neighborhood, which was not on Wendorf’s route.

“I may or may not have called the Northborough Post Office to see if they could add it to his route,” she said.

Grandmother’s pandemic letters become children’s book series

By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer BOLTON/HUDSON – Elizabeth Tewksbary, a Hudson native now residing in Bolton, is the mother and grandmother of a blended family of six children and six grandchildren. Now, she’s also an author.

Her five-part children’s book series is based on handwritten letters that she sent during the 2020 stay-at-home advisory to her granddaughter Cohen, now age 3.

“I’ve always preferred handwritten letters,” Tewksbary noted. “When I see handwriting, I recognize it and think of that person. It’s definitely more personal.”

‘Letters from My Heart’ Cohen began getting letters when Tewksbary was quarantined in April 2020 with her husband recovering from his surgeries and their youngest daughter home from college.

Meanwhile, Tewksbary received grateful phone calls from Cohen’s mother and encouragement from her husband to publish what is now known as the series’ moniker: “Letters from My Heart.”

Self-described as “not a digital person,” Tewksbary researched various publishing options online.

Among her reasons to selfpublish is to give 30% of the series’ proceeds after costs to Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress. Three generations of her family have volunteered for the organization’s annual fundraiser.

“My goal was never to make money from the books,” she explained. “My nephew’s 5-yearold daughter, Jenna, has Down

syndrome. When she was born, we got involved with the Buddy Walk in Westborough.”

Tewksbary is also giving 20% of each of the series five books’ proceeds to other charities. Additionally, books are being donated to multiple nonprofits including Cradles to Crayons, which provides essential items to children living in low-income or homeless situations.

Geared for children age 2 to 6, the books are being released throughout several months.

The first two were published in 2020.

Sharing family memories The series debuted with “Just Like Me” in which Cohen discovers and befriends her shadow. It’s benefitting Camp Sunshine for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Tewksbary has volunteered at the camp.

A timely pandemic topic gets an age-appropriate spin

in “My Mask and Me.” Cohen learns how her eyes express the smile behind her mask.

It’s benefitting Champs Café, where students with special needs work side-by-side with neurotypical fifth-graders.

Tewksbary ushered in 2021 with the January release of “Smile with Me,” benefitting Friends of Bolton Seniors. She formerly served as a Friends board member.

The series’ final two books are scheduled to be released by spring.

In the fourth book, Cohen gets to play with a variety of balls – and learns a lesson along the way.

“There are so many different types of balls and they all have a purpose,” Tewksbary noted.

“People are like that, too.”

In the fifth book, Cohen learns about family responsibilities as she paints a birdhouse where the mother bird’s nest protects her eggs. Tewks-

Assabet Valley Camera Club to host virtual meeting Feb. 3 HUDSON - On Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) will host a virtual presentation by Maureen and Todd Mathieson exploring what judges look for when they evaluate photographic images. Camera buffs looking to improve the impact of their work can benefit from this program which focuses on honing technical skills as well as creat-

ing interesting compositions.

The Mathiesons, members of the Photographic Society of America, have been awarded the Master Member, New England Camera Club Council (MNEC) for their service to that organization as well as to local photography clubs.

Both Todd and Maureen have served as president of the Assabet Valley Camera Club

“Now with COVID, people are out of work and really struggling,” Tewksbary said.

“People are stepping up to help and I want to be a part of that.”

yler Kinsky, a senior at Westborough High School (WHS), was recently selected to join the “best of the best” for the National Association for Music Education 2020 All-National Honor Ensembles (ANHE).

Held virtually for the first time ever on Jan. 7-9, the AllNational Honor Ensembles event included several rehearsals with the 2020 ANHE Conductors and workshops with renowned clinicians. Each ensemble will create a final, recorded performance that will be premiered online during the National Association for Music Education’s Music In Our Schools Month® in March 2021.

Kinsky was selected as one of only 18 students nationally to be part of the ANHE Jazz Ensemble, and is participating playing jazz trombone.

After graduating from WHS, he plans to pursue a degree in Jazz Performance and Music Education.

The All-National Honor Ensembles performers represent collaboration and creativity in its highest musical form. The

All-National Honor Ensembles consist of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed choir, jazz ensemble, guitar ensemble, and modern band (now in its second year). Students were chosen through an audition process. The concert band and symphony orchestra each have 120 instrumentalists, the mixed choir contains 241 vocalists, the jazz ensemble has 18 instrumentalists, the guitar ensemble has 45 instrumentalists, and there are 13 performers in the modern band.

Northborough English Learner Education program accommodates 21 languages

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH- There are 21 different languages spoken by students in the Northborough Public K-8 schools.

An English Learner (EL) is a student whose first language is not English and is not able to perform ordinary classroom work in English.

Currently, Northborough K-8 schools have 107 ELs, a

steady incline from 32 students in 2004. Portuguese, Spanish and Arabic are the three most prevalent languages in the District for these students.

All families complete a home language survey. When another language other than English is the first language at home, the English Language Development teachers set up a family interview. This is the first step to building a relationship with the families.

“We truly get to know the uniqueness of every family,” said Webb. “This information is shared with the classroom teacher and all teachers work-

ing with that student. It’s important to get to know the students really well.”

A language proficiency screening is state mandated and helps to assess the level of language proficiency. A twocomponent program model is used for instruction.

The family and school partnership is strong “We always want our families to deeply understand how their children are doing at school, and we also want to hear from our families how the children are doing at home,” said Webb.

Translation services are

provided to assist families with communication. It’s also a growth area recommended for the Fiscal Year 2022 budget.

School Committee member Kelly Guenette commended the District for accommodating translations of electronic communications for the EL families so it’s not another obstacle for them.

“It shows the diversity of the District and where we have come in the past 15 years and where we are going,” she said.

School Committee Chair Keith Lebel was pleased to hear that the District has a good understanding of “the fine line of sorting out English language

learning and the subset of children who also have other educational needs that go beyond just learning English as a second language.”

In a typical school year, an international night is held.

Webb said it needs to be expanded because there are so many families.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to see… the whole family come together and just enjoy each other coming from such diverse backgrounds,” she said.

“We are all so grateful to have them enrich our lives as educators in our District,” said Webb.

Assabet’s Health Tech program awarded MA Skills Capital Grant

By Cindy Zomar Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH - Assabet Valley Regional Technical High has been awarded a Massachusetts Skills Capital Grant for $358,741 to be used in the Health Technologies program.

This was the third time the program had applied, and Kathy Regan, the lead instructor, gives the writing credit to Bryant Laflamme, the Director of Technical Programs.

“I just got to spend it,” she laughs.

Laflamme admits that it was a lot of time and effort to write the grant application again.

“It is a competitive process and a big, painful submission, but there was a need to replace aging equipment, so we tried again. We must be aligned with industry trends so our students are job-ready when they graduate. That’s our mission!

We provided letters from our workforce partners, colleges, and Program Advisory Committee, extolling the eventual benefits to them. We shared a line-item budget of everything we thought we needed to have our kids ready for the real world,” he recalled.

Shrewsbury schools to implement pool surveillance testing for COVID-19

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – The Shrewsbury Public Schools will soon begin implementing COVID-19 pooled surveillance testing, according to Superintendent Dr. Joseph Sawyer.

Sawyer, along with Noelle Freeman, director of nursing, shared details about the testing process with the School Committee Jan. 20.

Pooling involves mixing several testing samples into one batch, then testing the entire batch with a diagnostic test. This approach increases the number of individuals that can be tested while minimizing the cost.

Freeman explained that if the sample is negative then it is safe to assume all involved in that pool are also negative. But if the sample comes back positive, those individuals would be separately screened to determine

who was positive.

“Our plan at this point is to phase in testing,” she said. “Our hope is to begin by

making testing available to all staff across the district beginning in early to mid-February and then to expand testing to students at the high school by mid to late February.”

The need for testing lower grades will be based on virus case counts.

Testing will consist of a self-administered shallow nasal swab. It will not be mandatory but will be highly encouraged.

According to Patrick Collins, assistant superintendent of operations and finance, the district is in the final phases of working out a contract with the vendor for a weekly pooled regimen.

They plan to use stimulus and grant funding for this program.

At the same time, we know that things can change on a dime to full remote learning, so we can move our laptops and screens to focus on a piece of equipment or hospital bed and everyone can watch the instructor from home,” explained Regan.

Upgrades in online learning systems Students were already given Chromebooks to take home, but a set of 60 was purchased for the classroom as well. Fiveyear licenses were purchased for both the Applied Education System and Dean Vaughn Medical Terminology online curriculums, as well as on online electronic medical software called EHR Tutor.

Staff used 60 cinch bags donated by Quinsigamond Community College to send home supplies for practicing some competencies, such as denture and nail care, a bed pan, and a gait belt for transfers. These can be cleaned and recycled for the next classes.

Sean Bevan returns to ARHS in the role of principal

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Principal Sean Bevan was no stranger to the school when he accepted the position, which began in July.

He taught English for seven years at ARHS before moving to an administrator role at Westwood High School, the previous nine years as principal. He feels privileged to be a part of the school again, but returning during a pandemic has been challenging.

“Coming on board to a new building is hard in any circumstance,” said Bevan. “It’s extra hard during a pandemic.”

He is proud of how hard educators worked over the summer to make sure this year was successful and healthy.

Identifying challenges from hallway traffic patterns, protocols and bell schedules took a lot of effort and collaboration.

Data will be reviewed regularly to ensure the high school learning model is working well and the approach will be refined as needed.

tion. He said he didn’t have the typical steep learning curve of a new principal. He knew many current staff members from his teaching days, and had an understanding of the school’s culture and traditions.

He maintained contact with the ARHS community over the years through friendships, social media and news. He also subscribed to the school newspaper The Harbinger, which he previously advised.

“I enjoyed working here when I was here,” said Bevan.

“When the position opened, I couldn’t pass on an opportunity to come back.”

Challenges during the pandemic This school year has been challenging with much focus and energy on COVID-19 safety and health protocols.

Something that Bevan misses is the ability to interact with staff and students as he would in a typical year. There are considerable barriers. It’s difficult to get to know students when

they are only in school twice a week and are wearing masks.

He hasn’t been able to meet with all the faculty in one space as meetings are being held via Zoom.

“What I enjoy about being a principal is to get to know kids, interact and be around the building,” he said. “My ability to do all those things has been impacted. I am looking forward to getting back to normal. My style of leadership is being hampered a bit.”

He continues to enjoy the fa-

vorite part of the day—the first 15-20 minutes, usually outside of the school entrance greeting students and staff.

“I have always done that as a principal,” he said. “It’s important that leaders be visible and approachable.”

Extracurricular activities plus review of school’s mascot Bevan recognizes that the social element of school is important as part of the school experience. Although modified, there are some extracurricular activities being held and the fall athletic season was a success. The winter sports season is underway, but will be more challenging because those sports are held indoors.

There is a lot of effort and close monitoring to ensure safety.

Bevan is also facilitating the review of the school’s mascot, the tomahawk. He said it needs to be done well and transparently with a great deal of sensitivity.

He looks forward to when school is more ordinary.

“I am really excited to be back …and look forward to a healthy and strong end of the year,” he said.

Winners announced in the Zero Waste Westborough logo design contest

WESTBOROUGH –Forty five entries were submitted in the Zero Waste Westborough logo design contest, with the winners announced on Jan. 7.

“There were so many incredible designs and efforts put forward by all of the students who participated and it was very difficult to pick the three overall winners,” said Nathan Askew, a Zero Waste Westborough member, who served as one of the judges.

The winners in each age group are: Grades 4-6: Nicholas Brainerd; Grades 7-8: Nandita Ganesan; and Grades 9-12: Omshreya Swain.

Swain, a junior at Westborough High School, was also chosen as the overall logo design winner.

All the students who entered the contest will receive a composting bucket with their own logo design on it. All the logo designs including the three top entries are available to view on the Zero Waste Westborough Facebook page.

Zero Waste Westborough was created in 2020 to educate Westborough residents and to promote ideas to reduce waste in Westborough.

School survey airs feelings of inequality, racism

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Like the community and country as a whole, the Westborough Public Schools district has a lot of work to do to address issues of equity and racism. That was the message during the Jan. 20 Westborough School Committee meeting, where members reviewed the results of a recent survey of students, parents and staff.

Sixty-seven % or 1,224 students in grades 7-12 responded to the survey. The majority of student respondents were white (53 %). Other ethnicities represented include Asian/Southeast Asian, Indian (30 %), Hispanic/ Latinx (9 %), Black/African American (3 %) and Middle Eastern (3 %).

Students were asked questions about feeling welcome at school, experiencing or witnessing bullying, being singled out to represent their ethnic background and more.

Assistant Superintendent Daniel Meyer said the data would be used to prompt “thoughtful, informed discussions” about how to rectify problems aired in the results.

Data from students • Forty-seven % of African American and 23 % Hispanic students indicated they would not feel comfortable telling a staff member about witnessing or being bullied.

• Twenty-five % of African American and 11 % Hispanic students expressed not feeling welcome at school.

• Twenty-six % African American and 15 % Hispanic students reported feeling excluded from social events/ gatherings based on race either sometimes or often.

Celebrating 40 Years of Family Dentistry

Data from parents Sixty-three % or 2,394 parents responded to the survey, with 15 % of African American respondents saying they “sometimes” felt hostility from the school system.

• A quarter of African Americans reported being ignored or belittled after sharing their ideas either rarely or sometimes.

• Twelve % of Latinx respondents said they did not feel welcome at school while 8 % responded, “not sure.”

Superintendent Amber Bock said this year is unusual because of COVID-19 and less face-to-face interactions with parents. She said that a committee working on revamping the social studies curriculum would present a report later in the year. “(It’s) broader than social studies, but that plays a role in helping with this,” Meyer said.

Bock noted that making the district more inclusive is anongoing goal. The complete report on survey results was sent to parents this week.

School Committee member Raghu Nandan said he was concerned that students felt their issues would be “swept under a rug,” and were reluctant to approach staff.

“We need to be sure cultural training is done,” he said. “If they can’t go to staff, who are they going to turn to?”

School Committee Vice Chair Stephen Doret said that he is not surprised by the results because racism and inequality has existed for 400 years in the country. He emphasized that “as a necessity to survive,” action is needed.

“It’s all well and good doing surveys but what is needed (not just in the microcosm of the school district) but in the U.S. as a whole, is a method to solve this problem.”

July 27, 1950 – Jan. 13, 2021 W E S T BOROUGH - George E. Parker Jr., passed away peacefully at his home of 70 years, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer on Jan. 13, 2021. George found much comfort and peace knowing he was able to spend his final days at home, where he lived his whole life on the family farm. George was the secondgeneration owner and operator of Parker’s Orchard, one of the longest running orchards in town, established in 1947.

George is survived by his niece, LeeAnn (Anderson) Desmarais, whom he thought of more like a daughter, and her husband, Louis Rob Desmarais Jr. of Shrewsbury; two greatnieces, Alyssa J. Desmarais of

Westborough and Ashley T. Desmarais of Shrewsbury, whom he thought of more like granddaughters; his sister, Sharon A. (Parker) Gravlin, of Westborough; and his beloved big yellow Labrador, Rocky, as well as cousins and many, many friends and customers he met throughout the years.

Family and friends gathered for calling hours Jan. 20 at the Britton Funeral Home of Shrewsbury, followed by his funeral Mass at St. Luke the Evangelist Church of Westborough and burial at St. Luke’s Cemetery.

He is survived by his brother, William Cronin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his son, Francis Cronin and wife Paula of Gardner; his daughter, Cathy Cutler and husband Jack of Redding, Conn.; and grandchildren, John, James, and Jeremy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and other dear family members and friends.

He was the brother of his late sisters, Patricia Lugin and Katherine Silvestris, and his late brother, Michael Cronin.

Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home of Hudson assisted with arrangements. A private burial service will be held at Forestvale Cemetery.

Phyllis B. Dean, 82 WESTBOROUGH - Phyllis B. Dean, 82, formerly of Westborough, passed away peacefully

in her sleep Jan. 15, 2021.

She was the wife of the late Charles E. Dean.

She is survived by two children, Kevin A. Dean and his wife Elizabeth of San Jose, Calif. and Cheryl A. Esper and her husband Richard of Rutland, and three grandchildren, Nicolas Esper, Kyle Dean and Angela Esper. She was predeceased by her parents, Everett and Elsie (Johnson) Bickford, and a brother, Edward Bickford.

SHREWSBURY - Sandra “Sandy” (Mangs) DiTullio, 71, a longtime resident of Shrewsbury, passed away Jan. 16, 2021 after a long period of declining health. Sandy was born Sept. 17, 1949 in Worcester, the daughter of Ernest and Barbara (Walden) Mangs.

Sandy is survived by family who never left her side, her husband, Tony DiTullio; her son, David DiTullio, his wife, Jessica, and their children whom she cherished, Leila and Andre; a brother, Randall Mangs of East Falmouth; an uncle and aunt, Steve and Doris Mazzola; and nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. She was predeceased by an uncle and aunt, Leo and Marie “Chic” Walden.

Out of an abundance of caution and adhering to Sandy’s wishes, all services were private. The Mercadante Funeal Home & Chapel of Worcester assisted with arrangements.
