It was an opportunity for people across the country to come together to support communities. Northborough resident Marile Borden took the opportunity to support the Wayland-based organization, Dignity Matters.

NORTHBOROUGH - Traffic concerns have been a hot topic among residents for months.

A public hearing was held at the Jan. 25 Board of Selectmen meeting to discuss options to address those concerns. The town will add a website link that will be a venue for frequently asked traffic-related questions.

The majority of concerns are focused on truck traffic generated from the Bartlett Street industrial facilities, like Amazon.

Town Administrator John Coderre said he found that more effective and efficient resident communication was needed.

“A lot of people just weren’t aware of all the work and information that has been com-

Cards can be as colorful as you like – it is just requested that you do not use glitter or paint. (Storebought cards are also fine.) The cards can be dropped off at the Town Hall mailbox (care of Parks & Rec.), 100 Maple Ave., by Monday, Feb. 8. The cards will then be distributed to the town’s seniors.

A new traffic safety page on the town website will enable residents to pose questions and appropriate town staff will reply. It will serve as a resource and increase transparency.

Resident John Wixted doesn’t think this will solve the underlying issues. He would like to work with the town to come up with reasonable solutions to keep residential neighborhoods residential.

“If people are asking the same questions over and over again, it is because the problem is not getting solved,” he said.

Northborough to set up vaccine clinic for residents in February

Black said that the town had over 3,000 people sign up for its vaccine notifications in 13 days.

be included soon on the town webpage. The closest sites currently include UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital, UMASS Memorial Campus in Worcester and Central Mass Allergy and Asthma Care in Worcester.

Pharmacies, hospitals, and mass vaccination sites are also being added as locations. Appointments are required.

Black said her department is working to assist residents who may struggle to find a vaccination site.

“The key thing is these sites are opening,” she said. The sites are not the problem, the vaccinators are not the problem.

The supply is the problem at this point.”

Northborough is moving forward to opening its own vaccination site for residents only in February. The support of the Fire Department staff has been critical in this process.

“We have all of our approval and I did submit our first request for the vaccine,” Black said.

She estimated that with available staff they could administer 600 vaccines per week,

two days per week. The state, however, has a request limit of only 100 per week per site.

“At that rate, we would vaccinate a third of our population in two years,” Black said.

“It’s not what we were hoping for, but I don’t think this was all for naught. We are setting up the process, we are setting up the infrastructure. More

vaccines will become available.”

She does stress not to forget about the safety protocols followed for months even after vaccination.

“It’s not magical when you get the vaccine that your life won’t totally change, but you are going to be less likely for serious illness,” she said.

Marlborough’s mayor concerned about phase two of state’s vaccine rollout plan

By Vicki Greene Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH—The city has been receiving 100 vaccine doses per week, according to Mayor Arthur Vigeant. When asked by a member of the Marlborough School Committee at its Jan. 26 meeting if teacher vaccinations were going to happen in February, Vigeant explained that “there’s a real issue” because the state currently has 86,000 doses at this time. Phase 1 vaccinations in the city have been completed, according to Vigeant. However, the state has now added people ages 75 and above as a Phase 2 priority; there are 2,500 residents in that category who live in Marlborough.

With the 100 doses per week we can’t even get one-third of the [Phase 2] group done in February,” Vigeant explained. “The second group of Phase 2 that includes teachers, is going to be late February, March.”

the guidance and set priorities directed by the Master Plan Implementation Committee. A new committee would require staff resources, which are limited while focused on all things COVID-19.

Residents felt differently and the idea of creating even a shortterm advisory traffic safety committee was mentioned. Resident Mitch Cohen said this could help the Master Plan Implementation Committee stay focused on the bigger picture.

Other safety measures The town, along with its legislative delegation, asked the state to reconsider a pedestrian activated flashing beacon at the Maple Street and Route 20 crosswalk.

Police Chief William Lyver continues to work on speeding enforcement. Multiple radar machines are rotated around town and requests for additional enforcement areas are welcomed.

Potentially, an Amazon representative will attend a February Selectmen meeting.

Candidates prepare for contested races in Westborough annual town election WESTBOROUGH – There will be several contested races for Westborough voters to consider when they go to the polls Tuesday, March 2 for the town’s annual election.

Two incumbents, Syed Hashmi and Shelby Marshall, will be challenged by Sean Keough for the two 3-years

terms on the Board of Selectmen (BOS).

Thomas Dolan, Jr. and Patrick Welch will be facing off to serve a one-year term on the BOS. This position is currently vacant after longtime Selectman Leigh Emery stepped down in December.

“Through the entire journey I received a lot of helping hands,” she said. “It motivated me to want to give back and show amputees around the world that just because they have a disability, it doesn’t mean that their life is over.”

Lambert founded the nonprofit The Born to Run Foundation. Its focus is to help ease the financial burden and provide specialized prosthetics for children and young adults. Since it started, 11 people have benefited from the foundation’s support.

The first was a three-year-old boy.

“Being a part of all these donations, hits home,” she said. “If I could go through everything I did and end up on top, so can they.”

She said it took her three years to feel confident and not self-conscious, but she views the accident as a positive.

“I wouldn’t change anything about it,” Lambert said.

“It changed my whole outlook on life. Something can be taken away from you in a second…

I will not take anything for granted ever again.”

Residents spend night in the cold to benefit the homeless Night | from page 1

Out of sight, out of mind Henderson admits that while living in Westborough he is not confronted with homelessness on a daily basis.

“When I travel to Boston or Worcester, I’m reminded of their plight. I’ll typically give one $20, and pretend to not see the rest, as if I’ve done my duty for the day. My kids would just stare in disbelief,” he said. “Then we’d all go home and forget again. Except sometimes, on a particularly cold and windy day, when I find myself sprinting from my car to the grocery store, I’ll remember that there are people who will be outside all day and night. So, I agreed to join John and try it for myself.”

Feb. 27 All-Nighter The two men have chosen to camp out for 24 hours at 45 East Main Street, Westborough from Saturday, Feb. 27, 10 a.m. through Sunday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m., sleeping in boxes donated by Hudson Appliance. It is a fundraiser for the Massachusetts Coalition for The Homeless which has, for 38 years, worked to provide basic supplies to those in need. Due to the pandemic, the numbers of those seeking shelter, job training, medical care, fighting addiction or without a home has skyrocketed.

“Numbers fluctuate, but the number of people that are experiencing homelessness on a given day in Massachusetts has peaked at over 20,000 in the last few years,” Bogaert added.

Giving it a face They chose to learn more about homelessness by speaking with someone living it every day. Bogaert shared, “We found a homeless man named Tony out on the streets of Worcester. Tony has been homeless for five years, in and out of shelters. He is a high functioning, likeable, relatable person. After explaining our mission to him, he agreed to help us better understand his situation and to be part of this fight to help. The one thing that Tony said that tore at our heartstrings was when he was asked what he needed or what we could get for him, he answered, ‘friendship.’ We met again and brought a few items.

Shrewsbury Scouts help clean up locations

Scouts helped clean up trash at Jordan Pond.

SHREWSBURY – Over the past few months, the Boy Scout Troop from Ray Stone Post in Shrewsbury performed community and conservation service projects.

One project was cleaning up trash at Jordan Pond. Two weeks earlier they had done the same at Dean Park, picking up 17 bags of trash.

Doing service projects together is one way that Scouts keep their promise to help other people. according to Scout Service Coordinator David Lowy.

“While a Scout should do his best to help other people every day, a group service project is a bigger way to help people,” he said. “By doing community service, scouts work together with others to do something that’s good for the community.”

Author will speak on journey of raising a transgender child WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough Women’s Club will welcome Amy Glennon as its guest speaker at the next Women’s Club meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. via Zoom.

Glennon is a teacher, writer, and parent. She will speak to the membership about raising a transgender child. Six years ago, her family discovered a deeply held truth that launched them into unfamiliar territory. Glennon will share her emotional journey as she loved her child through a gender transition. What it means to be transgender, and the challenges and blessings that come with parenting a transgender child, will be shared.

Town Meeting may be postponed in Westborough

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Westborough will likely move its Annual Town Meeting from March 13 to some time in late spring.

A date will be chosen at a future Board of Selectmen’s meeting.

On Jan. 26, selectmen met jointly with the Westborough Board of Health to talk about the best course of action. Town Manager Kristi Williams was instructed to speak to the department heads to see if any warrant articles are so time sensitive that a date change would be detrimental.

Board members agreed that they want the largest number of participants possible and at a later date, when the COVID-19 pandemic could be more under control.

Board of Health member Nathan Walsh noted that the number of cases in the state surged after Thanksgiving and Christmas and now appears to be trending downward.

The roll out of vaccinations makes him hopeful that people will feel less at risk once more of the population gets shots.

Board of Health Chair Alan Ehrlich said “later is probably better,” but pointed out that Town Meetings were held “successfully and in a safe way,” last year and questioned whether it could be done again.

Town Moderator John Arnold said three meetings were held and the town has several options as to how it can proceed.

“From a health perspective, vaccinations are (now) not a pipe dream,” Ehrlich said.

“They are rolled out and will make a difference. In April, May, (that) will be more noticeable.”

Reaching out to elderly population Earlier, Fire Chief Patrick Purcell discussed efforts to vaccinate townspeople in various demographics prioritized by the governor.

people at long-term facilities were first.

Purcell said Westborough teamed with five communities and held a clinic where 400 first responders were vaccinated in two days. The second shots will be administered on day 28.

The next step, he said, is to give shots to people age 75 and older. This population will be challenging to serve because some have mobility issues and won’t be able to stand in long lines.

Sign-ups are done online, he added, and many in that age group don’t have access to or ability with technology.

It’s anticipated that a clinic will be held at the senior center. Paramedics will try to help people who are housebound or bedridden and can’t stand in line and wait.

He added that he is working with Superintendent Amber Bock to handle vaccinations in the school department. They have a plan to accomplish the

shots in one day and then repeat them 28 days later.

Beyond that, Purcell said, the town will follow the governor’s guidelines which may involve using large venues like Gillette Stadium, Fenway Park, etc.

“Communication is our challenge,” Purcell said, adding they will use local TV, social media and other means to get

She also made the United States Paralympic Track & Field team and holds the American record in the 100-meter race. She is currently training for the 16th Summer Paralympic Games to be held later this year in Tokyo.

She admits that she is still a rookie to running and it hasn’t come easy.

“I put in the work and practice and give 100 percent in everything I do,” she said.

Lambert was recently named L’oreal Paris Women of Worth National Honoree and received $35,000 for her foundation.

Northborough woman supports Dignity Matters on National Day of Service Borden | from page 1

collects, purchases and supplies feminine hygiene products, bras and underwear to women and girls who are homeless or disadvantaged.

Borden was introduced to the organization by a friend.

She was surprised and impressed by their mission.

“The ability to purchase feminine products is something that so many of us take for granted,” she said. “While we often think about those struggling with food insecurity, I had never considered the fact that so many women are faced with having to choose between buying food or taking care of their other basic, biological needs.”

What many may not know is that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly Food Stamps, will cover the cost of candy, but not feminine products.

Borden held a successful collection from Jan. 15-18. She collected feminine hygiene products as well as underwear and bras. The number

of items she delivered to the Framingham Dignity Matters warehouse was “too many to count.” It all benefits women and girls to help them stay healthy, regain self-confidence, and live with basic dignity.

Dignity Matters assists programs across the state including food pantries, public schools, domestic violence shelters, and homeless shelters. All donations benefit women in Massachusetts.

The pandemic has affected the economy, and the lives of many have greatly changed.

The demand for assistance has increased.

Borden said that before COVID-19, Dignity Matters served 4,000 women each month.

Since the spring, that number has grown to 8,500.

“I knew that their needs had grown due to the impact of COVID and increasing joblessness,” she said. “I knew it was a cause that the Northborough community would embrace.”

Meals and Northborough Family and Youth Service have made it possible to serve the community through this coordinated effort. These organizations are committed to helping families in need and addressing food insecurity.

An increase in need NJWC Co-President Martha Michalewich said the first week of curbside pickup had 40 meals. There are now 120 people served each week. The need increases the longer the pandemic impacts are felt.

The generosity of time and funding for the past 8 months has been appreciated.

“People have been magnificent,” she said. “People do like this program and want to help and have the opportunity to give back.”

Meals are served every Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 pm from the Trinity Church parking lot. Waters and desserts are donated each week.

It takes 4-5 volunteers to set up, assemble the meal bag and deliver it to the cars as they drive up. The entrée is made possible through partnerships with local restaurants, who provide a to-go meal for $5 each.

“For 120 meals, that’s $600 a week,” said Michalewich.

“We depend on donations to keep that going.”

She estimated that funding may run out by the end of March.

Massachusetts State Senator Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton) and Massachusetts State Representatives Danielle Gregoire (D-Marlborough) and Meg Kilcoyne (D-Clinton) were impressed with the operation when they visited on Jan. 20.

“This is an example of how communities step up and help people with food insecurities,” said Eldridge.

Support from other businesses Michalewich said food establishments, many which have struggled themselves during the pandemic, have been great partners. They have said that Northborough is their community too and want to do what they can do to help.

“We are hoping to do this until it is safe to go back inside to do the regular Community Meals,” said Michalewich.

“We hope to continue as long as needed.”

sure that these needs are met.

Erin LaPrad, BORO Program Coordinator, oversees the integration of the two sides of the program to ensure that goals are being met. She also identifies ways to engage the community through on-site events, providing social opportunities for the students.

The Sugar Shack was established to be self-sufficient through sales, with the goal of paying the students as employees once the store gained profitability, according to LaPrad. Ultimately, she added, “our focus is to help the students secure paid jobs that match their career goals.”

Preparing students for their futures The young adults who volunteer at The Sugar Shack, located just off the rotary, learn skills like customer service, inventory management, running a cash register, basic job skills and more, that will prepare them for the next step in their journeys: paid work.

Although the BORO Program is still in its startup phase, it’s growing steadily.

In 2020, the store performed well “thanks to an awesome community that supported us along the way,” LaPrad said, “and we’re reaching our goal to begin paying students for the hours they work on the weekends and after program hours.”

Supporting our students An anonymous donation of $10,000 provided seed money to begin paying student employees minimum wage for their work at The Sugar Shack. Inspired by that donation, a GoFundMe was established by local resident Ilyse Levine-Kanji to seek additional donations for the BORO Program.

“I always feel happy when I leave the Sugar Shack with a yummy treat or merchandise.

Seeing the students so rightfully proud of themselves — showing off their abilities, not their disabilities — is truly heartwarming,” LevineKanji said.

Ultimately, with paid jobs, the students will go through an onboarding process that includes HR, paperwork and more as part of their educa-

tion. LaPrad said that “every piece of what the students do is a learning opportunity.

It’s important to have them in the store so they’re seen.

Our community wants to see them after school and on weekends,” she added.

There are currently eight students in the program,

which continues to grow.

LaPrad hopes to be able to invite program graduates and alumni to work for pay at The Sugar Shack on weekends

COMMUNITY | Schools Marlborough School Committee votes to start hybrid learning on Feb. 22 Grades 3 -12 will be on staggered schedule

By Vicki Greene Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH - Marlborough Public School students in Grades 3 – 12 were scheduled to return to a hybrid learning model on Feb. 1. However, at its Jan. 26 meeting, the committee voted to move that date to Feb. 22.

The phased return schedule outlined by Superintendent Michael Bergeron is as follows: Feb. 22, students in Cohort B Grades 3, 8 and 12 return to school; the week of March 1 students in Cohort A Grades 3,4,7,8,9 and 12 return to school; on March 8, all Cohort B students in all grades will be in school; and March 15, all Cohort A students in all grades, will be in school for the week.

Bergeron was clear that one

Cohort will only have one additional day of in-classroom learning so the plan was developed to ensure it was as equitable as possible. In addition, he explained that this will allow classroom sizes to remain safe and small within CDC COVID-19 guidelines.

Students in Pre-K through Grade 2, special education programs and EL 1 & 2 will continue in-school learning.

How the phased-in schedule was developed Bergeron asked school principals to make recommendations based on their individual school metrics. High School Principal Daniel Riley wanted to bring back seniors and freshmen in the first phase, according to Bergeron, because seniors have essentially been on a remote schedule since last

spring. Riley also felt it was important to bring freshmen back given they are entering a new school and it is an important transition. Whitcomb Principal Brian Daniels recommended bringing eighth grade students back because there have been attendance issues with remote learners.

prepared to alter serving models, sending meals and snacks home to remote students and keeping physically-distanced meals in school cafeterias. The district has delivered 325,000 meals to remote learning students using school buses.

Shrewsbury Superintendent shares sobering ‘State of the School District’

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – In a sobering report, Dr. Joseph Sawyer, superintendent of schools, told the School Committee at its Jan. 27 meeting that the ability to meet the needs of the Shrewsbury Public Schools students has been threatened by a “structural funding dilemma” that the community has faced for many years.

In his annual “State of the School District,” Sawyer noted that “these are extraordinary times.”

“Our schools continue to provide an excellent education to our students and great value to the community while navigating the most challenging circumstances that our schools have faced in most of our lifetimes,” he added.

Sawyer acknowledged the “incredible work” of the Shrewsbury Public Schools staff in response to the pandemic. And that it has been done in an uncertain environ-

ment while staff made personal sacrifices in the midst of a significant budget deficit that resulted in staff cuts unrelated to COVID-19.

“The pandemic has created the greatest crisis regarding the academic, social, and emotional needs of our children that we have faced in decades,” he continued. “Our children are counting on us to help them…”

Ongoing issues outside of pandemic Other issues that have affected the educational climate by creating an environment of divisiveness were the nation’s political and racial justice crises.

He reiterated the longstanding structural funding dilemma and asked what will the community do to solve the problem.

“If we don’t answer that question, unfortunately the future possibility of significantly compromised educational quality is now dangerously close to becoming a reality in

Shrewsbury,” Sawyer stated.

“I am not pleased that we are in this situation to put it mildly. We are facing a severe financial crisis as the superintendent has indicated…this is a town that does not have the revenues necessary to meet the service expectations of the residents,” remarked committee member Jason Palitsch.

He added that Shrewsbury

is a very well managed community but no one can manage their way out of this severe and growing structural deficit.

His colleague Dale Magee said that the town needs to address this and “see if a [Proposition- 2 ½] override is indicated”.

“We are facing a multimillion dollar deficit coming up that will lead to substantial

cuts that have been greater than we have seen in the past,” Magee said. “That’s what we need to help us. Money is not going to come from the sky.”

Committee Chair Sandra Fryc remarked that the budget for fiscal year (FY) 2022 will begin in earnest at their next meeting to be held Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Students will be given a take home nasal swab test with instructions. It should be done the morning they return to school.

The funding for these tests is being subsidized by the towns’ CARES Act. The school district plans to pilot the testing at one school before rolling it out to all its schools.

“We would like to have a real good estimate of what is going on in the schools,” said

District Wellness Coordinator Mary Ellen Duggan. “You want to have about 80 percent of the population in the screening.”

The weekly testing is voluntary, but testing is a big part of the route to get back to additional in-person learning.

“It is our responsibility to plan and prepare and make good decisions based on good data and this testing will allow us to do that,” said Superintendent Greg Martineau.

The testing, vaccine rollout and all other mitigation efforts will help the district think

about their next steps.

Another effort moving forward is the District’s partnership with Cannon Design.

Director of Operations Keith Lavoie said the company’s tool will calculate the number of students who can fit in each classroom while maintaining safe distancing. All different factors will be considered as part of that calculation and determination.

“It’s another tool in the toolbox that will help our ultimate goal of getting back to full inperson learning,” he said.

Six tips for helping your child navigate the long slow return to normalcy

anticipate what form school will take from one week to the next. As children thrive on routine, all this persistent uncertainty can be particularly stressful for them. In a Gallup poll conducted in May of 2020, 29% of parents said that their child was “already experiencing harm” to their emotional or mental health because of social distancing and closures. An additional 14% indicated that their children were approaching their limits and could continue only a little while longer before their mental health suffers.

While struggling with their own pandemic fatigue, parents are seeing the toll this extended experience is taking on children and are looking for ways to ease their stress and anxiety. At Fay, where Lower School students are at school in-person and have been throughout the fall, Head of Lower School Lainie Schuster has been observing the effects of this experience on her students. She shares her advice for parents on nurturing resilience in their children as they help them navigate the next few months.

Keep talking and listening Even when it seems that there’s nothing new to say about COVID, Lainie notes that making sure that children feel heard in their worries and concerns is essential.

She echoes the advice of Fred Rogers, who said, “In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.”

Model responsibility and positivity Kids are carefully observing how the adults in their lives handle the stressors of a pandemic, and parents can help their children cope by rededicating themselves to modeling patience, kindness, and good humor under pressure.

Admit that you don’t have all the answers When kids are chafing at seemingly endless COVID restrictions, it can also be tempting to brush off those persistent queries of, “When is this going to end?” or “Will I be able to see my friends soon?”

However, parents don’t need to know all the answers. They can help by listening to the questions and letting kids know that they are not alone in feeling frustrated. “I’ve been getting better at saying, ‘I don’t know the answer to that yet,” says Lainie, “and parents have to be willing to say that too.”

Assure them that life will get back to some semblance of normalcy while acknowledging that you don’t know exactly when that is going to happen.

Give flexibility and choices Kids are desperate for some control in a daily routine governed by restrictions and protocols. Parents can help by giving them more opportunities to make decisions and changes to the family routine when possible. It can be as simple as letting them choose dinner or being more flexible about when chores get done. “It’s about giving kids the chance to make those little decisions, because they’re not so little to kids!” says Lainie.

Reach out to others Encourage kids to focus on helping others as a way to channel their frustration into positive action. When Lainie saw some kids volunteering to help customers at her local market get their groceries to the car, it was a reminder that small actions can make a big difference in how we all navigate the next few months. “Reaching out to others can give kids a sense of accomplishment, purpose, and pride,” she adds.

Create time together Families have been spending a lot of time in the same house, but they’re not necessarily spending it together, points out Lainie, who worries about the rise of isolationist activities like video games. Lainie recently created a serialized podcast of her reading Wilson Rawls’ “Where the Red Fern Grows” for her Fay students and encouraged families to listen to the story together.

“Reading as a family is a great way to take an independent activity and use it to bring everyone together,” Lainie says. “Pull out the Parcheesi and Sorry and bring back family game night,” she adds, “because encouraging those social connections that we’re all missing is so important!”

Marlborough School District plans to offer COVID-19 PCR nose-swab testing

NORTHBOROUGH – The visiting Shrewsbury Colonials girls’ basketball team defeated Algonquin Regional 46-42 in a game played Jan. 29.

The score was close the entire game, with Shrewsbury ahead with a 1 point lead at halftime.

Algonquin fought back to take the lead briefly late in the second half, but Shrewsbury regained control in the closing minutes to earn the win.

With the win, Shrewsbury improved to 2-1 on the season while Algonquin fell to 0-3.

Following current COVID-19 protocols, the game was played in an empty gym without any fans present.

Ryan Ogar and Nicholas D’Angelo scored their first career goals for Algonquin just 42 seconds apart in the first period. Sam Salvi, also with his first career goal, Tommy Hauck, and Henry Antino added second period goals for Algonquin.

A number of COVID-19 precautions are in place for this season. The game is played in two extended periods instead of the traditional three, masks are required at all times, locker rooms are closed and players arrive directly in uniforms, and fans are not allowed to attend.

MARLBOROUGH—The Marlborough School District has started sending out emails to parents to approve testing of their children for COVID-19 if needed. Parental permission is required because the district is using a third-party vendor to purchase two types of tests and to release the results.

Assistant Superintendent of Student Services & Equity Jody O’Brien, updated the committee at its Jan. 26 meeting on the two test procedures. The district already has received BinaxNOW rapid antigen test kits that can be performed on those students and staff that are symptomatic while at school. The school nurses have been trained on giving the tests, assuming parental permission is given. Results from the antigen test come back in 15 minutes and if a student or staff member tests positive they will be sent home and should be treated as positive

COVID-19 cases, according to O’Brien. If the rapid test results come back negative, the student or staff member will be sent home and asked to see their healthcare provider for a PCR nose-swab test.

Superintendent Michael Bergeron explained that the district placed an order on Jan. 26 from the same vendor for PCR nose-swab tests so they can perform weekly testing for staff and students. Bergeron stressed that “it is unlikely we could perform weekly testing for all students, but we do believe we can offer a convenient alternative for some families with an after school weekly clinic.”

There are currently two free testing sites in the City that families are encouraged to use but the schools could offer a limited alternative. Bergeron did not have a definitive date as to when, or how many, PCR tests the district will receive.

The tests are funded through federal and state monies included in the CARES Act.

What’s in store for the Boston rental market in 2021

he local apartment rental market in Boston has had a tumultuous 12 months since January of last year. A year ago, the city was experiencing record low vacancies along with record high rent prices. It was one of the hottest housing markets in the country, with rent prices mirroring those of New York and San Francisco.

Fast forward a year later, and the market is starting 2021 in a much different position. The global pandemic has caused widespread vacancies in Boston. Rent prices have been tumbling as vacancies soar to levels not seen in years. Many locals are wondering what’s in store for 2021.

The vacancy rate currently sits at 7.36% according to the data provided by Boston Pads.

That’s a 484% increase since January of last year. The local

markets nearest to the downtown and the local universities have seen the biggest impact overall. The only three neighborhoods in Boston where the vacancy rates haven’t more than doubled is Mattapan, Dorchester, and Hyde Park.

These interesting data trends suggest two things for the 2021 rental market in Boston.

First, local universities must return to providing education in a classroom setting. Bos-

ton’s rental market is so tightly hinged on the student population that 60% of all apartment rentals in Boston begin and end on Sept. 1, which coincides with the beginning of the fall semester. Between the travel ban preventing international students from coming to Boston and the decisions of most of the areas universities to adopt remote learning, the effects on the Boston housing economy were destructive to say the least.

Second, the overall trend for 2021 will be higher demand for housing in the suburbs and more renters wanting staying away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown.

The highest vacancy rates in Boston right now belongs to the downtown at an unprecedented 20.40%. Nearby North End, Beacon Hill, and West End are not far behind, all of which saw an increase in vacancy rate by 400% or more.

Historically these areas have had the lowest vacancy rates and the highest demand, but that all changed in 2020. Now, the lowest vacancy rates in the city belong to the neighbor-

hoods of Roslindale, West Roxbury, Hyde Park, South Boston and Dorchester, all of which lie on the outer limits of the city.

In terms of overall market health and recovery, the availability rate is a good indicator of what’s coming down the pipeline in terms of vacancies for a given market. The availability rate includes units both currently vacant as well as those that are not, but available for rent as tenants have notified their landlords of their intent to vacate. When the availability rate is very high, it suggests that vacancy rates are going to rise in upcoming months because new renters are filling those available units.

The current availability rate in Boston is 8.99%. The availability rate is only 1.66% higher than the current vacancy rate, which suggests that new apartments that are becoming available are getting rented out rather quickly. This could be a sign of optimism for upcoming months as it suggests that we’re close to flattening the curve in terms of vacancies.

Overall, it looks like the rental market will bounce back strong in 2021 assuming one thing. If the local universities should resume normal classes in the fall, bringing the student population back to Boston, we should see the market bounce back considerably. It may even spur many local landlords to make updates to unfilled units, providing better quality of inventory for renters overall.

Obituaries Beverly J. Greer, 69 WESTBOROUGH - Beverly J. Greer, MS, MD, MPH, of Westborough, died at age 69 on Jan. 21, 2021 after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late William Greer, MD and Mary (Bettie) Greer.

She was the devoted and adored sister of Peter Greer of Richmond, Va., Scott Greer of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Stuart and his wife Barbara Greer of Sunapee, N.H., and cherished aunt of Courtney Greer of Providence, R.I., Katherine Greer of New York, N.Y., Rebekah Gabor of Vienna, Va., and Tucker Greer of Richmond, Va. She was much loved by many friends near and far, all of whom were dear to her.

George E. McGee Sr., 86 HUDSON - George Edward McGee Sr., 86, a longtime Hudson resident and local businessman, passed away peacefully Jan. 21, 2021 at Marlborough Hospital after a period of declining health.

George was born Aug. 9, 1934 in Marlborough, a son of the late Clifton J. and Mary E. (Bassette) McGee. George proudly served his Nation in the United States Army National Guard and subsequently worked for 16

years as a Master Gas Fitter for Commonwealth Gas. George owned several speedshops, where he worked on Hot Rods in Hudson, Marlborough and Clinton. In 1966 George bought his first limousine and began a wild ride owning his and operating Continental Limousine for over 26 years until he retired in 1992.

During his years as a chauffeur, George met and drove many world-famous celebrities and politicians, including Sammie Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Wayne Newton and Governor Endicott “Chub” Peabody, who he later worked for as a Governor’s Aide. George also owned a school bus and disabled transportation company, Checker Cab Service, and the Chevron Gas Station on Cox Street in Hudson. He was also the owner of Cole’s Restaurant, Maggie’s Ice Cream stand, as well as five ice cream trucks.

He was also one of the original

investors of Hickey Dillon Funeral Home in Hudson.

Even with his many businesses, he still found time to serve his Nation again as a Commander for the Coast Guard Auxiliary in New Bedford and also his community as a Hudson town selectman for 18 years, serving 15 years as the chairman of the board.

George is survived by his son, George Edward “Gig” McGee Jr. of Florida; two grandsons, Montana McGee and Dylan McGee, both of Florida; and his nieces, Julie Baudo and her husband John, Lauri Wierzbicki and her husband Mark, Shellie Ashbery and her husband Andy and Sherry Guenther and his goddaughter, DJ (Redding) Collins. He was also predeceased by his wife, Sandra A. (Johnson) McGee; his sister, Patricia Pazzanese; and his goddaughter, Rachel Wierzbicki.
