he Northborough Board of Selectmen met on Feb. 8. Vaccinations, Amazon, and the state’s draft of the Clean Energy and Climate Plan for 2030 highlighted the agenda.

Amazon can bring benefits to the town Residents in the Bartlett Street area have been advocating to keep their neighborhood free of increased truck traffic for months. Industrial facilities have agreed to encourage their drivers to use alternate routes to the highways. Amazon and Federal Express have signage up.

As requested by residents and supported by Selectmen Julianne Hirsh, an Amazon representative will attend the next Board meeting on Monday, Feb. 22.

Go Kaz, Go! WESTBOROUGH –NASCAR fans had a local connection to the Daytona 500 on Feb. 14 as Westborough’s Kaz Grala made his second appearance in the race.

The 22-year-old rookie held the lead for 10 laps but ultimately had to leave the race after being caught up in a wreck that caused a rotor on his rear right wheel of his No. 16 Chevrolet to catch fire. After his crew extinguished the flames, his car caught fire again, forcing him to pull out of the race for good.

Although not the finish he wanted, Grala – and his fans – are looking forward to more exciting future adventures on the track.

As we near Tuesday March 2nd, and Westborough’s Annual Town Election, I’d like to introduce myself to the Westborough community; I’m Fiona McDonald and I’m running for a 2-year term as Trustee of the Westborough Public Library.

A board of trustees’ position is ideally suited for me. I have such fond memories of time spent in the public library as a child, finding books and then completely losing myself in them! But libraries have evolved and are no longer just places to borrow books; the Room of Things offers a myriad of objects to borrow, and the library provides other services such as notary and exam proctoring, discounted museum passes, events and activities for kids and teens, online resources and information, and is a hub for community organizations.

All of these are so important for our community, and something I’m passionate about supporting.

I’ve lived in the United States for 16 years, and nearly 2 years ago I became a naturalized citizen, which is why I can now give back to the community in this way.

I’ve worked in scholarly publishing for 18 years and, like the library, I’m committed to promoting learning, personal and professional enrichment, and a love of reading. My professional experiLetter | 5

WESTBOROUGH – Troop 100 Scouts are committed to their community service goal of “Do a Good Turn Daily.” Recently six of the young men did so by helping out a local senior after the Feb 1 nor’easter dumped over a foot of snow on the region.

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – Sharyn Thomas, Shrewsbury’s Assistant Town Clerk, has been chosen by the Board of Selectmen to be the town new Town Clerk. The BOS made the announcement at the Feb. 9 meeting. Thomas, who will officially begin her threeyear term on Monday, March 1, will replace Sandra Wright who is retiring after 34 years in the Town Clerk’s office, 11 of those as town clerk.

Town Manager Kevin Mizikar noted that the position had been posted internally and Thomas was interviewed by the Board on Feb. 2 in a public meeting.

Selectman John Lebeaux reflected that the interview process went well and that they were acquainted with much of Thomas’s work in the Town Clerk’s office.

He said, “...with what the Town Clerk’s office had to deal with unexpectedly this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and to plan out the town meetings and to plan out not just the elections but the presidential election as well…I am pleased and confident that she will be a great successor to a long line of great town clerks…”

He then made the motion to appoint her which was seconded.

Selectman Moe DePalo agreed with Lebeaux and added, “Thomas always had a smile and had the attitude of ‘Yes, it’s a lot of work but we have to get it done.’”

He remarked that Thomas played a large part in the success of the functioning of the department during the pandemic and that she is well qualified and prepared for her new role.

She was unanimously appointed by the Board.

Hudson Select Board responds to hate crime involving resident

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer HUDSON - The Select Board voted Feb. 8 to formally condemn racism and vow to fight acts of hate in town.

The move comes just under three weeks after a Hudson man allegedly shouted a racial slur at a Black and Latino man before fatally hitting him with his car. “[This] is a wakeup call that people who are capable of acts like this live in every city and town in Massachusetts,” Hudson Executive Assistant Tom Moses told the Select Board while presenting a draft statement to them.

Alleged crime in Belmont According to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan, Hudson’s Dean Kapsalis got into an argument with a man named Henry Tapia in an apparent road rage incident in Belmont, Jan. 19. After exchanging words, Kaspalis allegedly shouted a slur at Tapia, climbed back into his truck and ran over Tapia, dragging him

with his vehicle for several feet.

Kaspalis drove off but turned himself in to police roughly a half an hour later.

Tapia, meanwhile, died later that night.

Immediately, condemnation poured in from across the region.

“We cannot and will not tolerate behavior that is rooted in racial bias,” Ryan said at a

press conference, Jan. 20.

Town leaders draft a response Back in Hudson, semi-private conversations started, in kind, as Moses worked with the Hudson Diversity Committee to draft an official town response.

The fruits of their labor came before the Select Board, Feb. 8, specifically denounc-

ing racism and outlining ways town officials should respond to future hate-based incidents.

“We often hear life-long residents say that Hudson is a great town and that they have never seen an incident of racism in their lives,” Moses wrote in a letter attached to the statement. “It is true that Hudson is a great town, but our own understanding is filtered by our

backgrounds and perceptions.”

He elaborated, saying “Just because we don’t see [racism] does not mean that it is not there.”

Longtime Northborough Rec Director loves her job like the day she started

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - The Northborough Recreation Department has thrived under the leadership of Director Allie Lane for over 18 years. She attributes the Department’s success to diverse programming, community partnerships and dedicated staff.

Lane has had a passion for recreation all her life and said she’s “a lifer” for the position.

It was a Allie Lane o n e wo m an show in a small office when she first started the position in 2002.

Currently, the Department requires an assistant and the typical seasonal program brochure is 32 pages. The Department is also self-sufficient, something Lane was an advocate for so programs aren’t cut due to lack of town funding.

program, which is the Department’s biggest program and key financial contributor.

In February 2020, summer camps were filled in one hour.

Due to COVID-19 impacts, the camps were cancelled and refunds were issued in April.

“We are in charge of the safety of 140 kids each day,” said Lane. “We were very unsure of what was going on. It was a scary time.”

The Department was closed from April through November.

Lane and her assistant Michelle Cilley were reassigned to other departments. Cilley is now permanently with the Planning Department. Lane was temporarily reassigned to the Town Clerk’s office to provide assistance during the busy election year.

“It was pretty awesome doing something different,” she said. “It was an eye opener of what goes on in other departments.”

Programs are coming back slowly; most are in person as people have screen fatigue.

“The pandemic doesn’t just worry me for the kids, but also the senior population who are missing out on the social aspect,” she said.

Diversity, creativity and flexibility The number of participants per program is completely different than what they were before. Lane received the okay from the Board of Health and the schools to move forward with summer camp options.

Creativity and flexibility have been important to create a safe summer camp environment.

“It’s a different place than it was a year ago,” said Lane.

“It’s a challenge. Guidelines are constantly changing.”

Diverse offerings are also key to the Department’s success.

Programs reflect Lane’s understanding that not everyone enjoys physical activities and sports.

“I think we have one of the most diverse brochures out there,” said Lane. “We have multiple programs for everybody. We are not here just for the kids, we are here for everybody.”

No program can be successful without supporting staff.

Lane credited Cilley for many years of hard work, and staff and instructors, who create programs that make parents and kids want to come back.

Lane is working with limited space to offer programs because Town Hall is closed and schools are unavailable. Her established partnerships with businesses, such as Westboro Tennis & Swim Club and The Shrewsbury Club have helped.

“I want people to know that right now I am a one person team,” she said. “I welcome new ideas.”

Future projects include the rebuilding of Assabet Park, which is currently in the design stage; seeking Community Preservation Committee funding for Pickleball courts; and investigating grant opportunities to support a trail around the senior center and for a paved biking trail at Ellsworth McAfee Park.

Expanding activities outside for all ages using the new lighting at Melican Middle School fields is also on the radar.

Lane said it is a privilege to be part of the community.

“It’s an interesting position, and I love it like the day I started,” Lane said.

Boys & Girls Clubs seek board members MARLBOROUGH - The Boys & Girls Clubs of MetroWest serves more than 6,200 children and youth each year from across the MetroWest region. As part of a focused effort to diversify the Board and ensure that Club leaders truly represent the community being served, the Club is looking to connect with individuals who may be interested in joining the Clubs’ Board of Directors and newly established Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee.

Ideal candidates live or work in the MetroWest region, are looking to help the Club fulfill its mission of serving youth who need it most, are willing to commit to a three-year term and are able to attend monthly meetings to discuss Club operations, funding, strategy and impact.

Two vie for one-year term on Westborough Board of Selectmen WESTBOROUGH – Two candidates are vying to fill a one-year term on the Board of Selectmen in the Tuesday, March 2 annual town election. Tom Dolan, Jr. and Patrick Welch are running for the spot vacated by former Selectman Leigh Emery in December.

Here, in their own words, the candidates introduce themselves.

Tom Dolan, Jr. - My Westborough roots run deep. I was born and raised in Westborough, and I am a graduate of Westborough H i g h School.

As a political newcomer, I plan to bring a fresh perspective to our Board of Selectmen. I hope to inspire the next generation of Westborough residents to engage in town government.

Dolan - This spring, the most pressing issue that the town needs to address locally is COVID-19. The pandemic has impacted all aspects of our lives. We need to empower subject matter experts – especially our Board of Health and emergency response teams – to do their job and do it well.

Three vie for two three-year terms on Westborough Board of Selectmen WESTBOROUGH – There will be several contested races for Westborough voters to consider when they go to the polls Tuesday, March 2 for the town’s annual election.

Two incumbents, Syed Hashmi and Shelby Marshall, will be challenged by Sean Keogh for the two 3-year terms on the Board of Selectmen.

Here, in their own words, the candidates introduce themselves.

Syed Hashmi - You—residents of Westborough—have been at the heart of everything I have tried to do as your Selectman, such as: expanding senior tax relief, advocatSyed Hashmi ing for increased mobility and safety, and passionately advocating to make our town government inclu-

Hashmi - Recovering from the devastating impacts of COVID remain paramount. We are living with a health crisis and an economic crisis, with impacts that we have yet to understand. At the same time, our town is also changing. It is incumbent on us to ensure all the best parts that make Westborough,” Westborough” remain such as: our sense of community, our scenic beauty, and our civic pride. We need to ensure that residents’ voices and ideas shape the building of a more perfect Westborough.

We need to be constantly vigilant on being sustainable, not just in our environment, but in our finances.

Keogh - I believe the most significant problem facing Westborough is the ongoing pandemic and its impact on our residents, local business and the overall community.

A priority of the Board of Selectmen should be continued focus on the health and safety of Westborough residents and ensure all Town Departments have the necessary resources to combat the issues that COVID presents. Additionally, local businesses have been severely impacted, and creative solutions need to be considered to support them as they struggle to recover.

Marshall - The most pressing issue in Westborough is to see that all eligible, and willing, residents and Town staff receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Westborough considers pool testing in schools

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Would pool testing for COVID-19 be a pathway for students, faculty and staff to return to school safely?

That question was a topic at the Westborough School Committee meeting on February 3.

Superintendent Amber Bock gave a presentation on the measure which has been studied by the safety committee. That group ruled out a state model for testing as too disruptive and labor intensive. They were also concerned it could expose more people to the virus because it involved repeated trips back to the school for re-tests.

She also talked about a method used by JCM Analytics.

In this case, the materials are sent home in a container the size of a toothpaste tube. After taking the test, the participant returns the sample in a bag with a bar code that is scanned and delivered to the company.

Each person has now had a PCR test, Bock explained. JCM Analytics then does a pool test

with those samples. If there is a positive result, they are able to pinpoint the individual who is infected. Only that person goes home and has his/her immediate circle quarantined quickly, she said.

Bock said that she is estimating if 2,000 students from the 2,800 students in the hybrid model participate, it will cost $32,000 a week over an 18-week period.

She noted that Northborough/Southborough has had 80 percent and 90 percent participation rates at the middle and high school levels. They are now going to test K-12.

Shrewsbury is also using pool testing. Bock said she took the average.

School Committee member Raghu Nandan felt that 1,000 students weekly on a rotating basis seemed more realistic. He said the idea is to find out how widespread the disease is and not to test everyone.

Bock said another option is to test in grades 4 to 12 because older kids demonstrate more symptoms. On the other hand, students in K-3 may not

have symptoms but could carry COVID-19 and possibly infect others.

“We’re having these types of complex discussions as we look at the potential of pool testing,” she said.

School Committee Vice Chair Stephen Doret questioned spending around $500,000 when there is a very low positivity rate. He asked whether the 750 staff members should be tested versus thousands of people.

There was discussion about vaccination of teachers and how they could be rotated out of the process over time. The option of testing every other week instead was also brought up.

Bock said they could use CARES Act funds and other grant money to cover the costs and go out to bid. Taxpayers would not be affected.

Doret added that teachers should get high priority for vaccinations. School organizations must pressure the state to make shots available in 351 towns, he noted. “(It’s) needed for the health of our kids.”

and teachers together for fulltime, in-person learning. The Selectmen should continue to work on the priorities of the Strategic Plan. Doing so will continue to enhance the work-live-play experience of Westborough for all. It is critical that we maintain our existing commercial tax base, while attracting new businesses to offset future tax impacts on residents.

What do you feel Westborough can do to position itself best in a competitive marketplace, as it relates to residential and commercial real estate?

Hashmi - If we focus on the fundamental of building a better Westborough: on nourishing our residents, on enhancing our sense of community, and protecting our scenic beauty, the rest will follow.

Our residents are our most precious resource. We need to create value in and for our residents. We are in real danger of losing our sense of self, thus to

me, our path to success lies in empowering our residents, and thereby ensuring our residents health and success. We want to build a town that people don’t just want to live in, but one that their children want too as well.

Keogh - There is a priority to improve our position in commercial real estate. Financial programs to support overall local business, particularly in the downtown area, would increase economic and social vibrancy of the community. Additionally, changes are needed to attract new business development, especially over near I-495, to better balance the ratio of residential to commercial assessed real estate values in Westborough and reduce the tax burden for our residents.

Marshall - Completion of the Master Plan and its acceptance signals our commitment to future land and resource use and is inclusive of the community’s collective goals. We must maintain a high performing school system with creative

learning and budget management solutions. It is important that Westborough continues to be viewed as a welcoming community. Connecting and engaging our residents and businesses through broad civic engagement, and through professional and welcoming town leadership committed to effective communication and transparency demonstrates this commitment. We will create opportunities and bring additive value to Westborough by our commitment to the 2030 Clean Energy Climate Plan, increasing our affordable housing inventory and enriching the Downtown Village area.

Westborough Annual Town Meeting postponed until May 15

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – In light of the ongoing pandemic, the Westborough Board of Selectmen voted to postpone Annual Town Meeting until Saturday, May 15. The session will be held at the high school starting at 9 a.m.

Moderator John Arnold noted that the intent of the earlier start time is to potentially get all of the business done in one day.

Selectmen previously had talked about trying to get the best participation possible once vaccinations are underway. They hope more residents will feel comfortable attending the meeting.

Capital improvement costs for treatment plant Earlier during the Feb. 9 meeting, Town Engineer/Administrator Jack Goodhall and Treatment Plant Board Member Michael Stanton made a presentation regarding one of

the proposed warrant articles.

The request is to borrow $4 million over four years for capital improvement costs and related engineering services for the Westborough Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Goodhall outlined the items in the request including: • replacement of a dozen rotors • replacement of cloth filters that remove fine items from the stream • installation of a secondary makeup system for polymer • purchase of a plow truck used within the plant to replace a vehicle dating back to the 1980s • purchase of a truck to replace an older vehicle that takes grit and screenings and disposes of them at the Shrewsbury landfill • rehabilitation of the backup filter scrubber and holding tanks and replacement of grit classifiers • containment around electrical transformers

Stanton said the work needs to be done “to keep the operation (running) as smoothly as it is now and keep the town in a good place.”

He said the various parts had realized their life expectancy and are essential.

Vaccinations continue as priority Northborough Health Agent Kristin Black is looking at all avenues to secure vaccines for residents.

The first clinic on Feb. 5 was a huge success. The town is prepared to vaccine 600 people each week if the state can increase the vaccine supply. A second clinic will be held on Friday, Feb. 12.

“We have a long way to go in vaccinating our community,” said Black. “Our 100 doses obviously is not going to get us through seniors…as quickly as we want.”

Clean Energy and Climate Plan Draft The state has asked for comment on its draft of the Clean Energy and Climate

Plan for 2030. The plan is a guide for the state to reach 2030 emission goals.

Northborough will consider signing off on comments and recommendations shared by representatives from Westborough and Natick as a multitown collective effort. The Board will continue to review the draft and further discuss how the town will comment before the March 22 deadline.

Assistant Town Administrator Becca Meekins does not recommend the town to sign off on the recommendation asking that all Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) funded projects be net zero in 2022.

“It’s the technology we are moving towards to get away from fossil fuels and natural gas,” Meekins said. “It’s new to the market and there’s not a lot of contractors with a lot of experience.”

“We are on board and we all want to get to work on the same goal but we want to do it through incentives, through assistance and a logical plan,” said Coderre.

Diversity & Inclusion Committee discuss police recruitment, community engagement

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - The Northborough Diversity and Inclusion Committee met on Feb. 4.

The Committee is charged with making recommendations for community improvements in areas of diversity, equity and inclusion. The recommendations will be presented at a spring Board of Selectmen meeting.

A public survey to engage the public is in the process of being created. Police Chief William Lyver discussed recruitment challenges within his department.

Police Department discusses recruitment The Department requires diversity training and has upto-date and stringent policies and best practices in place. Lyver said that his department is young and they have grown up with more of a perspective of inclusion. They are more receptive to the whole topic and training.

He said that the police officer candidate pool has shrunk over the years and new ways to expand that pool need to be investigated. Lyver recognizes the challenges of filling roles and the need to have diversity represented on the police force.

“It’s an industry wide problem for police,” he said. “Police need to put their recruiting information out in a way that lets people know at a younger age what the requirements are. We try to hire the best of the best; this is a public trust position.”

Drug use and arrest records also disqualify candidates.

Youth interested in law enforcement should be aware of how actions can affect them later on and the importance of personal accountability.

Bringing back an Explorers Program is another avenue to expose kids to the police profession.

The physical ability test is often something candidates often don’t understand. Lyver said that bringing more awareness to this requirement could encourage better fitness preparation among candidates to pass the test.

Societal changes need to be taken into consideration, and policies reviewed. For example, the Department has a 1980 policy that prohibits visible tattoos while in uniform.

Assistant Town Administrator Becca Meekins said that the

This month, though, she got a break from it all via an all-expense-paid trip to Tampa Bay to see Brady’s Buccaneers play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. “Everybody deserved to go,” Spicer said in an interview, Feb. 10. “…I’m just very fortunate that I went.”

A small crowd full of health care workers Facing the need to reduce crowd sizes as the pandemic lingers, the NFL limited Super Bowl attendance to roughly 22,000 tickets this year. Of those attendees, Feb. 7, roughly 7,500 were health care workers coming from near and far.

The New England Patriots got 76 total tickets to hand out.

As Spicer was the only Marlborough Hospital employee chosen, she headed south solo but hardly alone.

The itinerary handed to Spicer called her to meet other health care professionals at Gillette Stadium at 7 a.m. on the morning of the big game.

“I didn’t really know exactly how the day was going to be planned,” she said. “You just are ready to go.”

At the field, Spicer took pictures with Patriots cheerleaders and the team mascot.

Then everyone boarded a team bus and traveled, with a police escort, to Logan Airport in Boston where the Patriots plane waited to fly them to Florida.

“Every step of the way, we were treated like royalty,” Spic-

er said. “I just can’t say enough to thank Robert Kraft and the Patriots organization for such an amazing trip.”

Taking precautions in a big crowd At the game itself, Spicer sat in a crowd that has, at some points, been criticized as a possible superspreading situation.

Spicer recognizes the concerns but did not see things the same way.

As she cheered, she said, stadium staff roamed the stands reminding anyone whose face mask slipped below their nose to pull it back into position.

Shrewsbury Town Manager discusses FY2022 projections

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - Town Manager Kevin Mizikar shared a presentation of his draft fiscal year (FY) 2022 Fiscal Projection One with the Board of Selectmen at their Feb. 9 meeting. The presentation contained revenue projections and operating budgets.

Revenue “What we are looking at from the revenue side of things…It’s about $8.8 million of new revenue,” Mizikar remarked.

In total revenue $154,873,279 in total revenue is projected.

This reflects an increase of $3,792,177 from FY 2021. Of that amount, $3,414,177 will be directed towards operating expenses leaving $378,070 for non-operating uses.

Taxation is the biggest source at $90,721,180 followed by state-aid which is forecasted at $27,540,270 with the inclusion of local receipts (Schedule A), utility, Free Cash and other available funds.

Revenue is broken into two categories - unrestricted and restricted. Unrestricted funds equaling $119,037,915 are primarily used for operational support.

Restricted revenues are earmarked for specific uses such as debt service and maintenance and operations of utilities and equal $35,835,364.

Operating budget Mizikar’s first projected budget summary total for FY2022 is $131,793,857 and education is the largest driver at $70,522,000. Others include Administration & Finance, Public Safety, DPW, Community Development, Debt and Interest and Retirement.

He noted that the Board of Selectmen had previously approved reducing funding for retirement by $1,590,000 which will help balance school and municipal operations.

Selectman John Lebeaux inquired what the fund unrestricted non-operating distribution of $378,070 will be used for?

Mizikar replied that it goes into the general fund and can be used towards capital improvements.

He added that one of the most difficult decisions to make was within the police department budget but that “Chief [Kevin] Anderson put together a very thoughtful proposal to begin to kind of change the direction of the Police Department…”

Shrewsbury officials issue COVID-19 vaccination information

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - On Feb. 5 the town of Shrewsbury issued a press release acknowledging that the “roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine has been slow and at times confusing” but urged residents to be patient while assuring that “we will all have the opportunity to get vaccinated!”

As of Feb. 1, the commonwealth moved to Phase 2, Step 1. Individuals 75 years of age and older are now eligible to receive the vaccine.

Why Shrewsbury doesn’t have its own vaccine distribution location According to the press release, “Shrewsbury is part of the Central Massachusetts Regional Public Health Alliance (CMRPHA) and receives shared public health services through the City of Worcester’s Division of Public Health (WDPH).”

As such, the WDPH is coordinating the vaccine and is the primary regional municipal sponsored vaccination site for those eligible.

That site is currently located at the Worcester Senior Center, 128 Providence St. “Shrewsbury will receive a dedicated allotment of appointments at this location to help ensure a representative amount of vaccinations are provided to our eligible residents in the appropriate vaccine phases,” the press release stated. “When appointments are avail-

able, we will communicate that to residents.”

The press release noted that if Shrewsbury were to take this on alone it would only receive 100 vaccine doses per week given the current limited supply. However, through their relationship with the CMRPHA, they can leverage a larger allotment capped at 975 vaccines per week, which is primarily the Pfizer vaccine.

Current vaccination locationsShrewsbury specific clinics will be offered at the Worcester Senior Center for eligible and phase specific individuals. As vaccine becomes available, residents will have a number of options to access the vaccine.

Currently, Shrewsbury Price Chopper and Wegmans in Northborough, are listed as COVID-19 vaccination locations on the state’s vaccine landing page which can be accessed at www.mass.gov.

Assistance for seniors As of Feb. 5 a Massachusetts Call Center has been established to assist seniors 75 and older in navigating the commonwealth’s online appointment system. Call 2-1-1 and follow the prompts to reach the Massachusetts Vaccine Scheduling Resource Line. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Shrewsbury seniors can contact the Council on Aging who will assist them through this process.

“It’s a little bit of security,” Spicer said, who noted she has already received both doses of her vaccine.

Reflecting on a pandemic year Back in Marlborough, Spicer is back to work. However, she’s not soon forgetting those early days of the pandemic that long predated this Tampa Bay weekend trip.

“The nurses were so busy,” she said. “They were just trying to keep up. So, I just went over and helped them do whatever they needed me to do.”

Those health care workers Spicer labored alongside were the staff of Marlborough’s Granger One and Two units.

After she was just recognized at the Super Bowl, Spicer now wants to make sure none of those unit staff members get forgotten for their sacrifices. “[Fighting COVID-19 in the spring] was a team sport,” she said. “That’s important because it’s not just all about me.

It was a team that took care of these patients.”

Lockdowns and restrictions are expected to continue around the world through early 2021, and access to certain countries can change at any time.

Lots of couples whose wedding and honeymoon plans changed during the pandemic have postponed their honeymoon all together and come up with an alternative celebration.

It’s the getting married that matters, not the order or timing of events.

Take couple Laura and John, for example. Three months before their wedding date, they realized their plans to have family come from around the country for their wedding, followed by a two-week honeymoon in Japan, weren’t going to happen. A few days after their wedding date, on a Thursday night, Laura and John tied the knot before a justice of the peace and a witness, recording the event on video. They went home for a celebratory dinner of crab cakes shipped in by her mother and then went back to work the next day. They continued celebrating by drinking wine, playing video games, watching TV and adopting a puppy. That weekend, they informed everyone of the exciting, if unexpected, event.

Laura hopes to throw a big celebration next year, followed by their trip to Japan.

Michael and Andrea did a two-week staycation after getting married at the courthouse.

They took turns cooking each other romantic dinners, went for walks in the park, cuddled while watching romantic movies and turned their backyard into a temporary beach with a kiddie pool. They plan to turn their honeymoon plans into an anniversary celebration instead, having the best of both worlds.

of a Zoom wedding. They provide the opportunity for the bride to add her personality to a flirty or formal dress that shows off her legs and her shoes, a big appeal for brides.

In any range of white or offwhite color, pattern or fabric type, the little white dress, or LWD, family of dresses adds flair to a wide range of wedding types and settings, from outdoor at-home weddings to socially distanced weddings on the beach or on a yacht.

Again, here we have a dress style that can be worn at a range of additional wedding events, says Dunn. You might think that a short wedding dress means big savings on the wedding budget since it’s a smaller garment. But that’s not always the case, says Jessica Bishop, owner of a blog called The Budget-Savvy Bride. “Generally speaking, a short dress is likely to be more affordable than a floor-length dress because less fabric is

used, but that might not always be the case,” says Bishop.

“For designer dresses, the cost has more to do with fabric quality and construction than with length. If you’re looking to score a bargain, steer clear of high-end designer labels or ultraluxe fabrics, no matter what length of dress you’re looking for.”

Trends and budget aside, the key is feeling great in The Dress, which will always translate into looking great.

Dunn’s advice: “Never rush your gown search; try on plenty of options; consider a professional gown stylist, who can help with gown issues you might not know to question, such as back and side views and a range of movement tests.” One of the most unexpected tests for how a dress will wear on the wedding day is the view from above you, which is where taller guests -- and drones -- will have their vantage points.

Earl McCoy at Penny Photographics has noticed couples, especially brides, are getting more comfortable and less formal within their respective weddings.

“Brides are choosing comfortable shoes over high heels and not just wearing them for the dancing afterward, but wearing them throughout the day,” he says. “They want to be comfortable and most of them know that wearing heels for 12+ hours would be exhausting on their feet.”

He says many brides, instead of veils, are choosing simple headpieces or nothing at all, explaining, “This allows for more movement and freedom to hug, dance and move around without worry.”

Obituaries Craig L. Schofield, 72

Northborough Firefighter NORTHBOROUGH – Craig L. Schofield, a lifelong Northborough resident and career firefighter, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 6, 2021, after a short period of declining health. He was 72 years old.

Craig was born in Marlborough and raised in Northborough, one of 5 children to the late Malcolm A. and Beverly L. (Burrows) Schofield.

From a young age Craig wanted to be a fireman. He served as a call firefighter for the Town of Northborough while working for the Northborough Parks Department.

He also enjoyed being outdoors and would assist the Fiske Family, as a gardener, at the former Fiske Garden Center in Northborough and the Fiske Gardens of Sterling.

After graduating from Northborough High School, Craig completed his BS in Fire Science from the University of Massachusetts. In 1971 Craig enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he proudly and honorably served as a Fire Protection Specialist.

Upon returning home, Craig worked as a base firefighter for several years at Ft. Devens until its decommission. He then transferred to Westover Air Reserve Base where he finished out his career.

Craig enjoyed traveling. He summered in Stockton Springs, Maine and enjoyed spending time on his property in E. Corinth, Maine. Later in life Craig would travel to Cheticamp, Nova Scotia, where he found a new sideline, being a whale tour guide making a lasting impression on all that he met and lifelong friendships. Craig was a genuine friend and had a strong yet positive force within him which he shared with everyone. He was a true friend- no matter how long it was between visits, Craig would welcome you with open arms.

Craig is survived by his godson, Colby Fiske and his wife Amanda of Holden along with their children Brayden, Mason and Mackenzie Fiske, all

whom Craig loved as his own grandchildren. He also leaves four sisters, Andrea Schofield and her husband Steven of Auburn, Dale Gieser and her husband Will of Ocala, Fl, Dawn Wickam of Sturgis, SD and Marla Schofield of Arizona; a nephew, Justin Gieser and his children Carter and Scarlett; a niece, Kelly Gieser and his many friends and fellow firefighters.

Donald D. Wright, 80 MARLBOROUGH - Donald D. Wright, of Marlborough, died Feb. 6, 2021, following a lengthy illness. He was 80 years old.

Donald was born in Newport Center, Vt. He was the son of the late Kenneth S. and Isabelle (Sanville) Wright, and the beloved husband of Alice R. (Ferland) Wright.

Married over 61 years, Donald and Alice did everything together. With farming in Don’s blood, he and Alice’s passion in life was their Berlin farm, ADDA Farms, where they produced their own maple syrup from their maple trees, and sold it locally. They were also a fixture at the Bolton Fair for a number of years where they displayed their Shire draft horses and a beautiful array of wagons and carts.

Donald had a wide range of business interests including his construction company, WBCC (Wright Brothers Construction Corp.), Post Road Used Auto Parts, and the Marlborough Transfer Station, all of which he ran with his wife, Alice.

Besides his wife, Donald is survived by his three daughters, Teresa Amici of Holden, Jean Rabelo and her husband Julio of Shrewsbury, and Angela Lutton and her husband William (Bill) of Berlin. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Kristen Donahue and her husband Jeffrey, David Santospago, Kenneth (Kenny)

Amici and his partner Ashley, Kevin Amici, and Brian Amici, and a great-grandson, Luca Amici. Donald is also survived by two brothers, Terrill (Short) Wright and his wife Jackie and Wilfred K. Wright and his wife Claudette.

Angelina Vigliatura, 92 SHREWSBURY - Angelina “Lena” (Pedone) Vigliatura, 92, of Shrewsbury, passed away peacefully on the morning of Jan. 31, 2021 at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, where she had become a beloved resident amongst the staff. She was the devoted wife of the late John F. “Jack” Vigliatura Jr. for 70 years, before his passing in 2017.

Lena leaves her children, John F. “Jack” Vigliatura III, Rose F. Prentiss, Virginia Brothers, and Francine Cote; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Victor Pedone; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband and her parents, the late Angelo and Frances (D’Amato) Pedone, Lena was predeceased by her son, Steven Vigliatura; her grandson, John F. “Jack” Vigliatura IV; and her siblings, John Pedone and Grace Flaminio.

Gerry worked for many years as a surveyor, general contractor and carpenter. He enjoyed fishing from the local reservoir,

playing guitar, and was a model car hobbyist.

William H. Crosson, 91 MARLBOROUGH - William H. “Bill” Crosson, 91, died Feb. 4, 2021 after a long period of failing health. He was the husband of Joan (Dekan) Crosson, to whom he was married for 37 years.

He was born in Camden, N.J., the son of the late William and Martha (Gardiner) Crosson and lived many years in New Jersey before moving to Marlborough 26 years ago.

Mr. Crosson graduated from Cornell University in 1951 and was a member of the Naval ROTC, subsequently serving in the navy during the Korean War and as an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy.

After discharge from the navy, Bill worked as an actuary for the Equitable Life Insurance Company in New York City, and as a consulting actuary, before retirement.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Raemond Crosson, and a sister, Shaula Wright, both of New Jersey.

By Cindy Zomar Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH - “Our student nurses are trained and ready to go,” explained Ellen Santos, Director of Practical Nursing at Assabet Valley Regional Technical School.

Santos reached out in several directions to offer help with vaccine distribution, and the Marlborough Board of Health was the first to accept her suggestion. The adult Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) students have assisted with vaccinating the city’s residents at both Academy Knoll and Bolton Street, and most recently volunteered at a clinic for residents 75 and older at the Marlborough Senior Center.

Excellent resource for the commonwealth “There is too much misinformation out there, unfortunately. Student nurses CAN vaccinate, educate, and monitor patients afterwards. Our students are willing and able to serve the community and are grateful for the opportunity to do so,” Santos said.

She believes that the 15 adult nursing programs housed in technical schools across the state are the commonwealth’s best resources for volunteers in administering the vaccine safely and effectively.

“Our students have taken a certificate course through the CDC and have practiced on our lifelike mannequins. As long as a licensed professional is in the room with them, they are qualified to go! This creates a win-win, as they also earn credit toward their 540 hours of clinical instruction, as approved by both the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing Inc. (ACEN) and the National League for Nursing (NLN).”

Being a part of history Aminah Nakitende has participated in all three vaccination events so far and admits to being a bit nervous the first time.

“I wasn’t worried about my health, we have all the correct protective equipment, but

The Council on Aging provides $5 lunches for 100 seniors every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, but in order to have the clinic space, the curbside pick-up location has moved to Kennedy’s Market for the time being. Being part of the solution Santos is proud of the responses from her students, with 10 even volunteering to help during school vacation.

Northborough Southborough K-5 to start 4 day in-person learning in March

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH - Collaboration, continued safety protocols, medical expertise, and data are all factors driving the Northborough and Southborough Public Schools towards four day in-person learning. The plan is to start at the elementary school level on March 22.

“I think you kind of have two pandemics going on,” she said. “One that we talk about a lot and this other one that is in some ways equally as important that doesn’t get talked about as much. These are really big concerns…when we think about the safety and wellbeing of our children.”

Medical Advisory Team member Dr. Safdar Medina discussed how students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in remote learning are struggling. These are the students who need support with organization, time management, task completion, and tracking the tasks.

“Students with ADHD need structure to their day to be able

Shrewsbury superintendent declares district an ‘education emergency’ District faces nearly $5 million gap; opening of new Beal School in jeopardy

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – The Shrewsbury Public Schools District is facing an “education emergency” as it faces a nearly $5 million deficit, according to Dr. Joseph Sawyer, the superintendent of the Shrewsbury Public Schools. Sawyer shared that dire news in a lengthy presentation on the District’s fiscal year (FY) 2022 budget at the Feb. 10 School Committee meeting.

The budget – Sawyer ’s recommended budget for FY 2022 is $75,440,214, which is a 10.95% increase over FY 2020 in the amount of $7,444,931.

Additionally, the district would lose the equivalent of 48.5 full time existing staff to make up the remaining deficit.

The solution According to Sawyer, the community needs to come together to consider putting an operational override before the voters. His views were overwhelmingly supported by the committee.

School Committee chair Sandra Fryc will communicate with the Board of Selectmen to schedule a meeting to discuss the possibility of placing a Proposition 2- ½ operational override vote before the voters.

The Shrewsbury Public School (SPS) district is partnering with the Shrewsbury Media Connection (SMC) in reviving the format to raise funds for its performing arts program.

Michelle Biscotti and Kathleen Keohane, co-coordinators of development and volunteers as well as organizers of the telethon, assures that each evening promises to be entertaining. The telethon will showcase the talent of current students with original performances, which Biscotti said are “awe inspiring,” and will also feature interviews of alumni who have benefited from the program. There will be a cash drawing every 15 minutes during both nights.

Now is the time for the arts “What better year than this year [to have this event] when the auditoriums are dark and the stages aren’t lit and there is no opportunity to see what our kids are still doing,” remarked Keohane.

“We’ve covered a myriad of projects for the district and we have long wanted to do something around music and theater and the performing arts,” commented Biscotti.

“It’s such a critical program in our schools and so many kids participate.

“The telethon is giving a stage to the kids who don’t have one this year,” Biscotti added.

The need is great Thomas O’Toole, director of music & performing arts, shared that the telethon will support K-12 programming.

Historically the performing arts has had a great deal of support from the Shrewsbury Schools Music & Theater Association (SSMA), but because of COVID-19, they have not been able to fundraise.

O’Toole added, “We are opening up a new [Beal Elementary] school in the fall and there are some things that we will need to get.

“As we are moving students into the new Beal, we are going to be getting music rooms back in the schools where we don’t have them at Paton, Spring and Coolidge [elementary schools] right now so re-equipping those rooms will be critical…,” he added.

He also hoped that some of the funds could be used to provide climate control in instrument storage areas at the high school to help protect them from climate damage and to replace some instruments at the middle schools.

Michael Lapomardo, Brian Liporto, and Katherine Mercadante, performing arts and

music teachers at the high school, agreed.

Lapomardo said that the greatest need was for the global big ticket departmental items.

Mercadante and Liporto hope to use funding for the “Unified Sound” program that brings students with and without disabilities together to learn and perform in band and orchestra.

Gratitude Biscotti and Keohane hope to garner as many sponsors as possible. Each will be listed on their website as well as during the telethon. Levels include Gold ($2,500), Silver ($1,000), Bronze ($500), Supporters and businesses ($250) and families ($100).

By Debra Roberts Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH – Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) science teacher Kevin Hausmann received an uplifting surprise after closing out a long semester on Feb. 5.

Exhausted from the week, he packed up to head home for the weekend and was greeted in the parking lot by a new “friend” standing inside his pick-up truck--a smiling snowman donning an ARHS hat.

Not knowing who was responsible for this, but delighted by the gesture, Hausmann made the decision to drive home with his new friend (very slowly) and managed to get him all the way home still intact. The snowman was displayed proudly at his new home—a rock wall.

Curious to solve the mystery, Hausmann posted on social media, “Anyone at Algonquin want to fess up to this fantastic surprise?” Some

respondents guessed that perhaps it was a friendly senior prank.

A day later Hausmann posted an update: “Culprits identified!” He found out that the pranksters were fellow science teachers, Lori Mott, Emma Travassos and Courtney Gilpin, who took some photos

with the snowman after they placed it inside Hausmann’s truck.

Hausmann, who teaches multiple science subjects, has been a teacher at ARHS for over 15 years. He is also the faculty advisor of the school’s Best Buddies Club and the Unified Sports Coordinator.

MARLBOROUGH - The Providence Bruins hockey team took the ice at Marlborough’s New England Sports Center (NESC), Feb. 5, kicking off a season like no other amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The highest-level minorleague team in the Boston Bruins organization, Providence is playing locally this year as their home arena in Rhode Island is currently occupied for coronavirus testing.
