Towns implement mask mandates as COVID-19 case surge worsens
By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter
By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter REGION - With a spike in COVID-19 cases, local towns have taken a number of steps to prevent the virus’ spread, including enacting mask mandates in Westborough, Northborough, Southborough and Grafton. Westborough’s mandate went into effect on Jan. 5 following its approval by the town’s Board of Health two days prior. The board reported on Jan. 7 that there were 354 positive cases, which was an increase from 166 the prior week. That in turn, marked an increase from 72 cases in the week preceding Dec. 23. Grafton enacted a mandate on Jan. 3. That mandate also took effect on Jan. 5 Northborough’s Board of Health met on Jan. 6, voting to enact a mandate beginning on Jan. 10. The town documented 332 COVID-19 cases between Dec. 19 and Jan. 1. “I am in favor of the mandate,” said Board of Health member Lisa Johnson on Jan. 6 . “I think it sets precedence, particularly for the establishments in the town where we have workers of all ages — teenagers, young adults, older adults — and they’re uncomfortable wearing a mask if it’s not a mandate, but they’d rather wear a mask.” See additional coverage beginning on page 2…

Shrewsbury holds topping off ceremony for new police station
Doing our part to support local business.
SHREWSBURY - Community members driving along Maple Avenue in Shrewsbury have eagerly watched as crews constructed the bones of the new Shrewsbury Police Department in recent months. On Jan. 5, the town celebrated its topping off of the police station project, hoisting a beam signed by officials and community members into the steel frame of the station. One of those people watching the building take shape is Rep. Hannah Kane. “It’s so fun to be able to drive by and to see the progress now going up,” Kane said during the ceremony. “It’s never that exciting when it’s simply movement of the earth, but when you see the steel going up, you can see the building really come together and understand what it’s going to mean for our community.” “What great progress in a relatively short period of time,” said Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito. Board of Selectmen Chair John Samia said the project
