By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter NORTHBOROUGH - Beaver dams and contractors’ efforts to dislodge those dams left as much as three feet of standing water pooled across seven acres near the old Westborough State Hospital late last year, according to Northborough Conservation Agent Mia McDonald.

That deposited sediment in protected wetland resource areas and, in turn, prompted McDonald to issue a violation against the state Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM).

WESTBOROUGH - Ashley Homestore will open a new location in Westborough, occupying some of the space vacated by the old Stop and Shop location in RK Speedway Plaza off Route 9.

The plaza disclosed this information in a recent update to its leasing brochure.

Ashley Homestore will occupy 20,000 square feet of the property. The remaining 40,000 square feet will be occupied by an unnamed entity currently identified as a national grocer.

Ashley Homestore is a furniture and home decor retailer with locations worldwide.

Its closest current location is in Attleboro, roughly 45 minutes south of Westborough according to its website.

Speedway Plaza was the longtime home of one of two Stop and Shop locations in Westborough.

The store closed in June, though, directing customers to visit Stop and Shop’s other location in town at the Westborough Shopping Center, also just off Route 9.

Work has been ongoing at the now vacant Stop and Shop space.

Work continues at the RK Speedway plaza in Westborough, where Ashley Homestore plans to soon open a location.

The Town Seal Review Committee was convened last year to study and develop recommendations regarding Westborough’s town seal, which has been the subject of debate in recent years over its depiction of the cotton gin.

The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney, a Westborough resident. But it’s also been linked to the expansion of slavery in the American South.

The committee had already held two information-gathering sessions late last year, organizing one in-person event as well as a second event via Zoom.

It has been planning this third session with hopes to reach other community members that might not have attended those prior events.

Committee members note COVID-19 case surge Before making their decision to change the session date, multiple members said that they worried COVID-19 conditions might discourage attendance on Jan. 15.

“It just seems to me like, if we want to increase the rate of responses and encourage attendance then we should think about February,” Baranovsky said, later adding that she would be reluctant to attend in person, herself.

Though experts have said

early data indicates a lower hospitalization and mortality rate among individuals infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19, Westborough’s case rate continued to climb as the variant has spread.

Recent Board of Health data documented 391 new cases confirmed by PCR testing in the week before Jan. 13.

There were nine cases reported using at-home tests.

Those numbers represented an increase from 354 cases a week prior and 166 cases in the week before that.

Noting this surge, the Board of Health enacted a mask mandate earlier this month that took effect on Jan. 5 to remain in effect at least through the end of January.

“We hope that the current crisis will have abated by that point in time,” Board of Health member Alan Ehrlich wrote in an update attached to the board’s data report.

Southborough mask mandate takes effect

By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter SOUTHBOROUGH - Individuals are now required to wear a mask or face covering while inside Southborough buildings since Jan. 13.

This comes after Southborough Board of Health unanimously approved the mandate during their Jan. 10 meeting, following neighboring Northborough, Marlborough, Westborough and Grafton in implementing such a mandate.

“A week ago, I probably would have had a different spiel to say,” said Chair Chelsea Malinowski. “I think I’ve observed some behavior that has been inconsistent with [how] I thought people were acting — not necessarily in the Town of Southborough, but in surrounding towns that don’t have a mask mandate.”

She continued, “I think, where this is a temporary thing — it’s just to get through this short period of time — I am supportive of doing a mask

mandate.”

Malinowski said one of the reasons to implement a mandate was to provide businesses with a backing to say they are following a town mandate when they direct customers to mask up.

“I am certainly not looking for our staff to go out and be policing this on a day-to-day basis,” Malinowski said, noting the volume of the department’s work. “I don’t want to add anything else to their plate unless absolutely necessary.”

The mandate includes an exemption to people under two. It also exempts individuals with a medical condition, mental health condition or disability that prevents them from wearing a mask and people who are hearing impaired and rely on seeing mouths for communication.

The Board of Health will revisit the mandate in February.

Board of Health is ‘strapped’ Southborough Board of

Health member Safdar Medina, who also serves on the Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough’s medical advisory team, noted that masks are already required in municipal buildings and schools.

There are Southborough businesses that employ both town residents and high school students, he said.

His daughter, for example, works at NY Bagel.

While she wears a mask, Medina said, there are customers coming in unmasked.

“In order to really curb the spread in our town, I think, a mask mandate is necessary,” Medina said.

Southborough saw 384 cases of COVID-19 between Dec. 26 to Jan. 8, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The town has reported that just under 92 percent of residents are fully vaccinated.

Public Health Director Heather Alker said a “good number” of residents wear

masks while indoors.

“I do think that Omicron is more contagious,” she said, referencing the omicron variant of COVID-19. “So, even exposures not masked indoors, even if they’re somewhat brief, I think could lead to spread.”

“At this point, our healthcare system and our boards of health are just so overwhelmed, the schools are overwhelmed with cases, staffing,” she continued. “I think at this point it is timely, and I would vote yes to do a mask mandate indoors in our buildings.”

Board member Nancy Sacco, who, according to her LinkedIn page is a Registered Nurse at Marlborough Hospital, said there are 49 employees there who are out with COVID-19.

“It’s crazy how easily this is spread,” Sacco said. “I think this is more than timely.”

Alker estimated that the cases will come down in a month.

“I think this is a short-term thing, but I think, with this new variant, the numbers are through the roof,” Alker said.

She said the current number of positive cases don’t include people who are testing at home or sick at home and not testing, which Public Health Nurse Taylor West echoed, noting the lack of available testing.

“I just think we’re too strapped to take any more cases that could be prevented by the mask mandate,” Alker said.

Police chief talks enforcement Under Southborough’s mandate, violators could be fined up to $100 per violation.

Chief Kenneth Paulhus said the department’s perspective has been to leave the enforcement to the public health department.

Shrewsbury Selectman John Lebeaux will not seek reelection

By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - Longtime Selectman John Lebeaux has announced that he does not plan to seek reelection when his term ends in May. He made his announcement during the Board of Selectmen’s Jan. 11 meeting.

“I’d like to thank [the voters] for their support,” he said while concluding his remarks.

“I’d like to get back to work now.”

Lebeaux, who serves as the commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, has been involved in government since he was 18 and elected to Town Meeting.

He has served eight terms on the Board of Selectmen and was recently reelected to the board in 2019 alongside Chair John Samia.

May, and with Lebeaux’s announcement, this means one seat will be occupied by a new face.

According to his biography on the Department of Agriculture’s website, Lebeaux served as general manager for his family’s business, Shrewsbury Nurseries, for 26 years and served as Town Administra-

tor for the Town of Princeton before he was appointed as Commissioner.

“I’m going to miss working with you, and I thank you for all of your service,” Selectman Maurice DePalo said to Lebeaux. “It really has been a pleasure working with you all these years.”

“We’ve had a whole gen-

eration of people that we’ve worked with who have now transferred, and I’m going to miss the stability of having somebody next to me saying, ‘Hey, didn’t we do something like that about three years ago,’” DePalo continued. “I want to thank you and congratulate you for your years of service. I appreciate it.”

Samia recognized Lebeaux for his public service and his thoughtfulness, intelligence and dedication.

“One of the most precious commodities we can give is our time, and you’ve done that for a long period of time,” Samia said. “You made our community a much better place to live.”

The police would serve as an educational guide, he said.

“Certainly if there’s a problem, we’ll respond,” Paulhus said. “If somebody’s in a public space or in a private business or something like that where somebody wasn’t following the rules and whoever is in control of that property wanted us to respond, we would go.”

He said the police would leave a report.

Paulhus added that if someone is endangering others, then the police could look at other measures on grounds of violations like trespassing or disorderly conduct. The police could also issue a no contact order to an offending person.

“That would be an extreme situation,” Paulhus said.

He recalled a gym in Oxford that didn’t follow public health mandates there. He said the police issued citations and locked up that building.

“I think we would like to follow that model going forward,” Paulhus said, referencing police options in such extreme situations.

Crashes damage three Westborough police cruisers Photos shared by the Westborough Police Department show one of three cruisers damaged in two incidents last week.

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH - A pair of crashes on Route 9 damaged three Westborough Police cruisers in less than 36 hours last week, depleting the Police Department’s fleet and prompting urgent reminders to the community.

“Move over and slow down when approaching emergency vehicles on the side of the road,” police wrote in a message on social media after the second crash. “Please, for your safety and the safety of our officers.”

The first incident took place shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 when a car rear ended a cruiser that had stopped at a red light near the intersection of Route 9 and Lyman Street.

The impact pushed the cruiser into the vehicle in front of it.

According to police, the officer in the Westborough police cruiser was able to get out of the car and render aid

to others before the officer and the driver of the car that caused this crash were both transported to the hospital with injuries.

The following evening, two more cruisers were stopped on Route 9 assisting the operator of a disabled vehicle that was “in a bad spot.”

A pickup truck hit the backside of one of the cruisers, pushing it into the other cruiser.

“It happened again,” police

said in a statement on social media after that crash.

Officers were not seriously injured this time.

But the damage to two more cruisers was a hit to the department, which already saw a separate crash back in November severely damage a cruiser on Route 9.

backup vehicles that normally let them rotate which cruisers are receiving wear and tear in a given day.

The officer injured on Jan. 9 was released after being treated for a shoulder injury, Hallice said.

The driver of the pickup truck involved in the second crash was cited for a marked lanes violation and unsafe operation of a vehicle.

He will face a “Driving to Endanger” charge in district court.

Empty Shrewsbury school bus involved in crash on Route 20

By Dakota Antelman and Laura Hayes SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury Police Department said no one was transported to the hospital following a crash between a bus and a full size pick up truck pulling a large trailer last week.

“The pickup did strike the bus and also a utility pole,” Lt. Nicholas Perna told the Community Advocate.

The bus was empty at the time of the crash, which took place at the intersection of Route 20 and Green and South streets.

“Thankfully the bus driver was not injured,” Shrewsbury Public Schools wrote in a message to school community members shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Northborough Planning Board weighs bylaw for breweries

He also asked whether it was set during the planning process or after a facility was built.

“That’s a very gray area that I think it probably needs to have some more clarification,” Frederico said.

Poretsky said that, when talking with former Town Planner Kathy Joubert, she thought those capacity numbers might be a standard number.

Poretsky said she could call towns to ask for more information.

Poretsky added that some towns didn’t have capacity definitions in their bylaws.

“I didn’t know if [it] was better to have it or not have it, but at least there’s a max capacity in case it grows too large,” Poretsky said of this capacity topic.

Town Engineer Fred Litchfield asked why the towns felt the language regarding proportion of sale was necessary.

Southborough, SEDP to form partnership

By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter SOUTHBOROUGH - The Public Schools of Southborough will now partner with the Southborough Extended Day Program’s (SEDP) board on an extended day program.

This decision, which was approved by the Southborough School Committee on Jan. 12, comes after months of discussion of the future of extended day services in Southborough.

The nonprofit organization SEDP was formed by parents and currently serves Southborough students.

“We’re excited and optimistic about this partnership that [Superintendent Greg Martineau] has presented here,” SEDP Board President Katie Karmelek said.

According to Martineau, the district will partner with SEDP on programming and staffing.

Finances will be brought under the district’s responsibility.

He said the details of this agreement haven’t been worked out. But the next step was to formalize the partnership.

“It goes without saying it’s been a long and circuitous path to get us here,” Karmelek said.

“However, the steps taken were necessary to ensure that together we have formulated what we feel is the optimal program for everyone involved — that includes the community, the kids and the SEDP staff.”

Changes follow RFP process last year SEDP’s contract was slated to end in August. The district initially planned to recommend a new provider to the School Committee.

However, it later rejected all of the requests for proposals and extended SEDP’s contract for an extra year.

The district then began studying the feasibility of taking on an in-house before- and

after-school program.

Staff presented the results of that study to the School Committee in December and recommended that the district start a program for the 2022-2023 school year.

Martineau said at the time that one of the benefits of absorbing SEDP was that the program would be able to access the district’s resources, expertise and professional development.

During that December meeting, some residents expressed concerns, including that they felt that feedback from people who use the program was ignored.

The School Committee did not take any action on the recommendation at that time.

“I think, since that meeting, what time has allowed us to really think about was that we were looking at it as an ‘eitheror’ decision, and it’s really not an ‘either-or’ decision,” Martineau said.

The district shifted the way it was approaching the topic and had “many” conversations with Karmelek about forming a partnership with SEDP. He said they came to the conclusion that it was “very important” for the community to have input and feedback into the program.

District makes adjustments following December meeting In December, the district proposed having a parent advisory role relative to the program. That will now be shifted to a formal advisory role shared with SEDP. “Partnering with Southborough Extended Day Program really speaks to the longstanding commitment that it has had to the Southborough community and families, and it also brings on board the expertise and learning it has done over those many, many years,” Martineau said.

The School Committee voiced their support for the partnership.

Chair Roger Challen said it will be able to focus more resources and expand the program for the participating families and children while also providing continuity and a smooth transition.

“I do think that what their team and their group can provide, married with our district services and the educators that we have and the staff that we have, is going to be a positive thing,” Kamali O’Meally said.

“I’m happy to hear that recommendation.”

School Committee member Kim Tolander also noted that there is a “small segment” of students and families that don’t feel welcome in the program, which she said was a resource issue.

SEDP will support the district in hiring for the program and will remain as a community nonprofit that will oversee the programming.

Resident notes Recreation Department programs The district has talked about the possibility of offering enrichment opportunities.

Martineau said the district’s first priority is to continue current programs and then look at what enrichment opportunities could be provided. So, those would not be launched immediately.

Resident Kristin LaVault expressed concern that such opportunities would be competition with the Recreation Department’s Recreation After School Program.

“Recreation has always had a very good relationship with SEDP, and I wouldn’t want to see that become a competition, which would be kind of weird — it would be like the town competing with the town,” LaVault said.

She suggested that, if there were enrichment opportunities, staff with the new extended day program should run them through the recreation program.

Northborough/Southborough school district proposes $26 million preliminary budget

By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter NORTHBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH – The Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough’s preliminary budget for the 2023 fiscal year would include a 4.52% increase over the current year, according to a presentation to the Regional School Committee last month.

That translates to an increase of about $1.1 million for a total cost of just over $26.1 million.

“I will caution that we are very early in the budget process, and there are a lot of unknowns at this point in time,” Superintendent Greg Martineau said on Dec. 15.

The central office team subsequently reviewed the requests to present the preliminary budget to the School Committee.

Martineau said on Dec. 15 there were some unknowns when it came to the regional budget.

He said Gov. Charlie Baker’s state budget is “very important” to the regional school district’s budget because of factors such as the minimum local contribution and both Chapter 70 and Circuit Breaker funding for schools.

“Usually, we have a good indication of what the landscape will look like at the end of January,” Martineau said.

Other variables include inflation and the district’s health insurance costs, which may change after its previous provider left the market.

Martineau said the district

is partnering with Northborough and Southborough town governments to maximize its pool, which Martineau said staff believe will result in favorable rates.

Preliminary budget trims projected increase The initial budget requests came in at about $27 million.

Martineau said that, in talking to Northborough and Southborough officials, that number, which would have marked a 8.3% increase from FY2022, wasn’t feasible.

Staff reduced the increase by just under $950,000 to get to the $26 million preliminary budget.

Hateful graffiti found in Shrewsbury High School bathroom

By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - A swastika and the N-word were found in the stall of a girls’ bathroom at Shrewsbury High School, according to an email from Principal Todd Bazydlo to Shrewsbury families Jan. 11.

“The words and symbols used are deplorable, and we denounce them and these behaviors,” he said.

Bazydlo said the vandalism was discovered and reported by a student, who contacted him.

“School administrators immediately closed the restroom and captured pictures of the graffiti for evidence,” Bazydlo said.

Custodial staff removed the graffiti before reopening the bathroom.

Administrators began an investigation. As of Jan. 11, staff haven’t been able to determine the person or people responsible.

Bazydlo said administrators will continue their efforts,

though.

He said that, once the student or students are identified, they will be held accountable “under our school’s code of conduct and the applicable state and federal law.”

“As you know, this situation is incredibly upsetting to our staff, students and me,” Bazydlo said. “It is particularly painful for the Black and Jewish members of our community, and I want all students to know that they can turn to a trusted adult, such as a teacher, school counselor or administrator, for support or to debrief about this incident.”

He said he doesn’t believe these actions represent the beliefs and values of an “overwhelming” majority of students.

However, he said he realizes that the school is a “microcosm of what is happening in the world in which we live.”

SHS saw previous incident in fall The high school previously reported that they found “hateful” graffiti in two girls bathrooms back in November.

Staff said they identified a student who was responsible for some of the graffiti in that incident and held them accountable.

In a separate incident, students on a bus allegedly wrote phrases on an iPad that were “demeaning to Brazilian stu-

dents” and showed the iPad to Brazilian students in a car behind the bus.

In that instance, staff identified the students and said they would be held responsible.

In this incident, Bazydlo urged any parents or students with information to contact either an administrator or a trusted adult at the high school.

Principal notes recent action Bazydlo said SHS staff have been engaging students in conversations about the “substantial detrimental effect” that hateful language has upon the community.

He outlined steps the school has taken since the November incident in particular.

The school held a “learning session” on ways to intervene when they hear or see biased and prejudiced language. SHS staff also met with students to address their concerns about bias, prejudice and think of ways to engage the student population.

Bazydlo said staff have worked to identify students that will attend a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Virtual Summit later this month.

Additionally, the school has reached out to the Anti-Defamation League about anti-semitism and educational programs, which staff have continued to plan.

“The incident described is deeply troubling,” Superintendent Joseph Sawyer said in a statement. “In addition to denouncing this action, Mr. Bazydlo’s message also lists the variety of ways in which SHS has been working to educate and to address issues of hate, bias and prejudice, and I appreciate these efforts that the SHS community has been undertaking.”

That became difficult, however, as beavers dammed up openings in the culvert on a nightly basis.

She said crews used a sandbag wall and slowly removed the beavers’ materials. The water level was eventually lowered to expose the service road.

The initial water release went well, McDonald said.

After Thanksgiving, however, when McDonald visited the site again, she observed a large amount of standing water across part of the property.

A sudden release of water had spread sediment across the area.

As of the December meeting, DCAMM’s James Matz said they were still vetting how the sediment release occurred, though their understanding was that the beaver dam was removed on the downstream and upstream ends of the culvert.

The force of the water led to the sediment release, Matz said, though he added that a “vast majority” of the culvert was still blocked.

McDonald clarified that the contractor told her that equipment had entered the wetland resource area.

“They took a small excavator into the pond side,” McDonald said. “They picked up a large dead tree and jammed it into the culvert until the culvert blew.”

The tree broke in half. Crews picked up another one of the broken pieces and “continued to jam it into the culvert,” wiggling it around until the culvert blew, McDonald said.

This was a deviation from that plan.

“I also commented what a pity it was since then they had taken such great care to release so slowly and carefully and put in such controls and protections to protect that area during the initial release,” McDonald said.

DCAMM unaware of contractor’s actions, official says DCAMM Director of Environmental Services Susan Ruch said on Dec. 13 that this information about the contractor’s actions was news to her team.

“The contractor has not told us that,” she said. “We were led to believe otherwise. We take that very seriously.”

McDonald said DCAMM was onsite when the contractor explained its actions. She said the contractor offered this explanation in response to Matz’s observation that the force of the water had caused this sediment deposit. “[The contractor] said, ‘No,

it wasn’t the force of the water.

It was me sticking the pole in there and wiggling it around,’” McDonald said.

Parties eye next steps McDonald’s violation required an immediate site stabilization plan as well as an impact report and restoration plan.

The site stabilization plan has since been put in place. A turbidity curtain, which contains sediment and silt, was subsequently installed and inspected.

When the Conservation Commission met again on Jan. 10, the erosion controls and jute netting, which stabilizes slopes, had been installed. The sediment that had been released in this incident had been removed.

DCAMM still has its order to complete the demolition work. It also plans to restore the altered wetlands area and remove the beavers in the area. Ruch said her team is working to expedite the latter part of that work.

Shrewsbury kids get busy building snowmen

By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - Snowmen filled the yards of Shrewsbury homes earlier this month as the town’s Parks and Recreation department held a snowmanbuilding contest.

The winners were Daksh and Eva Shrivastava, who won a snowman kit for the next snow storm.

“When we saw there was going to be a snow day, we decided, ‘Hey, let’s do a snowman competition’ and see what kind of response we get from the residents,” Superintendent of Public Facilities and Parks Angela Snell recently told the Community Advocate.

The competition, she explained, was about residents getting outside and making a snowman.

The Shrewsbury Public Schools and other districts in the region closed school for the day for a storm that ended up dropping well over six inches of

“I never expected that much response,” Snell said. “We had a couple people even say, ‘This is our first time building a snowman.’ We’re glad that residents got outside and played in the snow and were very creative.”

Notre Dame Health Care launches new adult palliative care program REGION - Notre Dame Health Care Center’s At Home division recently announced an expansion in the form of its new Notre Dame Palliative Care program.

The program provides care for adults living with serious illness at all stages. Likewise, it builds on Notre Dame’s existing experience running its “Pedi Pals” pediatric palliative care program.

“Hospice is palliative care,

but palliative care is not hospice care,” Executive Director of Notre Dame At Home Susan Keefe explained in a press release.

“Individuals receiving palliative care, unlike in hospice, can still be seeking curative treatment,” she continued. “Our palliative care staff collaborates with medical teams already involved in the individual’s care to provide pain and symptom

management while providing support and education to the individual and their family.

This approach to care allows individuals to live the highest quality of life possible during difficult times.”

Monday afternoon, working to celebrate diversity at the school and to stand up against racism.

This followed several incidents of racist graffiti in WHS. Despite the cold temperatures, students and staff walked outside of the school to show their solidarity as a community.

Many held signs that expressed their support for all students as well as the need to erase racism in the community.

One of the teachers who planned the event was ELL teacher Alkeia Conerly.

“This event is so important because it brings not only everyone together, but it brings all cultures together,” she said.

“It’s a celebration of diversity and it’s so important because, here at Westborough, we are very diverse.”

community gathered in front of Westborough High School for an “Erase Hate” chant and for a reading of Amanda Gorman’s poem “The Hill We Climb.”

Gorman wrote and recited that program at President Joe Biden’s inauguration last year.

WHS faculty and staff took turns reading in different languages including Portuguese, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Arabic, and English.

Senior Autumn Lieber was one of the individuals who helped recite Gorman’s poem.

“Reading a part of the poem was a great experience for me,” she said. “…I felt like this poem really hit home for many people.”

Shrewsbury school district receives $20,000 anonymous donation

By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - An anonymous donor recently contributed $20,000 to the Shrewsbury Public Schools’ Colonial Fund.

The School Committee unanimously accepted the donation during its Jan. 5 meeting.

“We’re deeply appreciative of the fact that we have such a generous member of the com-

munity willing to invest in our students and our staff in this way,” said Superintendent Joseph Sawyer.

According to the district’s website, the Colonial Fund finances “high impact innovations” in Shrewsbury schools, including opportunities that are too costly or arise outside of the district’s budget cycle.

There have been a number of racist acts also committed in other schools in Massachusetts

during this current school year.

Back in Westborough, though, there was an open meeting and discussion among faculty and staff on the afternoon of Jan. 12 to continue this work on diversity and anti-racism.

“I think it’s really important for us to stand up together as a school to fight against racism

and other issues,” sophomore Nithika Krishna said. “[The unity walk] not only makes our school better, it makes each one of us, I believe, better,” Principal Brian Callaghan added.

Sawyer thanked the district’s co-coordinators of development and volunteer activities, Michelle Biscotti and Kathleen Keohane. He said they created a lot of communications to send to the donor list for the Colonial Fund that highlighted projects undertaken using the fund.

“This new gift will help us to continue that work to provide innovative opportunities that may not be covered initially in the budget — sort of seed money — to continue working toward finding ways to support our students,” Sawyer said. “Right now, given

everything that’s going on, the more opportunities we have to find ways to support our students and help our staff move things forward, the better.”

School Committee member Lynsey Heffernan echoed Sawyer’s thanks. She said Biscotti and Keohane’s communications have been “impressive” and “paying dividends.”

“While we can’t specifically thank whoever this anonymous person is, I hope they all know how appreciative we are, and the opportunity this allows for us is certainly excellent,” Heffernan said.

By Kevin J. Stone Contributing Writer REGION - If anyone was going to appreciate the first big snowfall of the year on January 7, it was the region’s high school ski teams.

While schools closed and community members begrudgingly shoveled their driveways, the many skiers were celebrating since they had not been able to ski much this season.

While other athletic pro-

grams have dealt with COVID-19 shutdowns, the ski teams just needed the weather to get a little more snowy.

“It’s been kind of tough with the weather,” Algonquin coach Wayne Hey said in an interview with the Community

“We’ve been out skiing for three weeks, but we don’t have enough snow depth to set up the gates.”

“It’s been tough on us, it’s been tough on everyone,” he continued. “It’s been tough on the hills too, places keep making snow and we keep getting rain.”

Hey has been coaching since 1998. This season, his team had been doing a lot of ski-related workouts and taking an occasional rush at The Ski Ward in Shrewsbury. But the lack of actual competitive races had been tough.

“We’re just out there skiing up and down the hill and doing a lot of different exercises to try and help them achieve a better performance,” Hey added. “It’s about finding better balance, refining your rotary skills, refining your pressure and edging skills.”

Hey said he was excited about the teams he saw before him.

“We’ve got two good teams, and we’ve got a really good, strong girls team,” Hey said.

“It’s not just who comes in first — the top five kids count for points as far as team points go so we have some good depth.”

Leading those teams, Hey said he’s been impressed with the patience team members have shown.

“Working with the weather we have, the kids are excited

and want to start racing,” he said. “But they’ve been good about taking things as they come and just doing the best we can until we can get out and start competing.”

Teams finally did hit the slopes for a race last week on Jan. 13.

The Algonquin girls team won the day in the girls competition, scoring 956 points to best second place Hopkinton by 42 points.

Algonquin girls skiers had three of the top 10 fastest race times, with Alexa Butterfield, Mina Utzschneider and Jula Utzschneider taking the second, fourth and seventh place spots respectively.

The boys team didn’t have any skiers in the top 10. But the squad as a whole finished fourth out of 10 teams.

Shrewsbury finished in third place in the girls race while Westborough took fourth.

Colonials skier Anyee Li ranked third in individual results, with Sophie Scerbin taking a sixth-place finish for the Rangers.

Westborough finished in third place in the boys race, with Shrewsbury landing in fifth place. Individually, Kieren Ghidella cracked the top 10 individual race times with a fifth-place finish.

Teams were due back in action on Thursday.

Shrewsbury e-sports teams celebrate state championships SHREWSBURY - Members of Shrewsbury High School’s (SHS) e-sports teams received their latest state championship trophies last week in a presentation at the high school.

After forming in 2018, the SHS e-sports program has quickly found both success at the state level and support within its school community, faculty advisor Steve McKinstry told the Community Advocate.

“The school picked up pretty well back in 2018,” he said.

The teams play in two sea-

sons each year, participating in varsity level competitions in the fall and the spring through the MSAA organization.

All told, the SHS e-sports program has raked in six state championships for each of their two games since 2018.

For McKinstry, this success comes as part of a program that greatly benefits its participants.

“The interest has really spiked,” he said. “We have kids that are playing at home by themselves. So it’s interesting to put them all together and get them to meet new friends and get the same attributes E-sports | 21

WESTBOROUGH - Rita Walden, 80, of Westborough, passed away on December 2, 2021, at the Blaire House in Worcester. Rita was the wife of the late William Walden, also of Westborough.

Rita was a competent and compassionate licensed practical nurse. She worked at the Westborough State Hospital for over twenty years. Ironically, Rita fought tenaciously against the mental afflictions that oftentimes tormented her later in life. While she was proud of her independence, Rita would surely want to thank Sharon, Sheryl, Ken, Jill, Jean, Wendy, Mary Donna, and also her extended family for

lovingly helping her through those difficult times.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, George R. “Bob” Harris, who passed in 2014, and their son, Mark R. Harris, who passed in 2017.
