SHREWSBURY - The Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen will now be known as the Select Board after receiving a thumbs up from Town Meeting last weekend.

The town will also move forward with a climate action plan and a new zoning amendment following similar votes within the meeting’s 48-article warrant this past Saturday.

WESTBOROUGH - After more than a decade’s absence, women’s softball has returned to Westborough as part of a league with teams from a number of area communities.

Westborough has three teams in the 2022 Central Mass. Recreation Women’s Slow Pitch Softball League, which also includes two teams each from Grafton, Southborough and Hudson. Northborough has three teams.

Board of Selectmen to change name With this week’s Town Meeting vote, Shrewsbury is on track to join its neighbors including Westborough, Southborough and Hudson in adopting a gender neutral name for its highest governing body.

As Town Manager Kevin Mizikar described it, the name change article specifically amended Shrewsbury’s general bylaws to change all references to the Board of Selectmen to “Select Board.” The article also authorized the board to petition the state legislature for a special act approving the change. “[The] Finance Committee unanimously thinks it’s about time this

WESTBOROUGH - The Mass Pike onramp to I-495 north reopened last Monday afternoon after several hours of delays following a tractor trailer rollover there shortly before 11 a.m.

Crews in Westborough remained busy, however, with a series of other major traffic accidents in town.

Located near the Westborough/Hopkinton town line, the tractor trailer incident clogged traffic, with backups visible along I-495 north and I-90 as of 10:45 a.m. May 16.

“Expect significant delays,” the Westborough Fire Department warned in a statement on social media.

Westborough crews were on scene alongside Hopkinton Fire personnel.

A photo shared from the crash site showed a truck resting on its side as traffic inched by.

A truck rollover was one of several traffic incidents on a dangerous day on local roads last week.

Information on the condition of the truck driver was unavailable as of press time.

State Police were then on scene as of 12 p.m., though, with plans to temporarily close the ramp later in the afternoon, once the crashed truck was righted.

The ramp did indeed reopen around 2 p.m. according to State Police, following the successful removal of the crashed truck.

took place just before 12 p.m, with photos showing at least one car with heavy damage to its passenger side.

Emergency crews then responded to the intersection of Route 30 and Route 9 around 2 p.m. following a head-on collision with injuries there.

Route 30 was closed around that crash.

Crashes follow previous incidents The tractor trailer crash was the latest in a series of incidents around the MassPike/I-495 interchange, coming just over a month after another crash involving large trucks in the area.

Taking place on April 8, that incident took hours to clear, prompting backups for miles along the MassPike and I-495.

The state has approved a roughly $466 million project to redesign the interchange, presenting data in 2019 that documented 460 accidents in the area between 2011 and 2015.

There were two fatal crashes during that time.

Work is expected to wrap on that redesign process at some point in either 2026 or 2027, with officials promising a comprehensive safety overhaul of the area.

The crashes around Route 9 separately came less than a week after another serious incident at the intersection of Route 9 and Lyman Street.

A motorcycle and an SUV collided there earlier this month, leaving the motorcyclist with serious but non-life threatening injuries according to Westborough Police.

SHREWSBURY - As another school year comes to a close, we can’t but help thinking about how different school was back in the “old days.”

Here we have a photograph of a first grade class from way back in 1941.

This particular class w a s f ro m w h a t wa s originally built as a high school building, but later used as an elementary school. After the Major Howard W. Beal High School was built, this building became known to all as the Center School.

As can be seen, most of the children in the photograph are identified. Although they are now in their eighties, at least two of the students, David Richardson (who contributed this photograph) and Gerald Shelby, and maybe some others, are still “with us.”

The Center School itself stood where the library parking lot is today.

hite wines from the Vinho Verde wine region in northwest Portugal are usually crafted from grapes that are recommended by the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC). Vinho Verde translates as “green wine,” but the word green means that the wine is young as opposed to aged.

Shrewsbury Board of Health implements mask advisory

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter SHREWSBURY - A mask advisory is now in place in Shrewsbury following a unanimous vote by the Board of Health last Friday morning.

The decision follows an uptick in COVID-19 cases, with public health officials similarly acknowledging issues with current pandemic data.

“Watching the numbers go up, we’re in a surge,” Health Department Principal Department Assistant Kerry Stockwell said on May 20.

‘The actual numbers may be higher’ Shrewsbury reported 163 positive COVID-19 cases on May 20 since May 13. The prior week the town reported 186 cases.

Stockwell said the basic trend indicated high case numbers in New England.

Board of Health member George Abraham noted a “quadrupling” of infections among hospital staff members at St.

Vincent and UMass Memorial Health in Worcester.

“The underreporting component of this cannot be underscored enough,” Abraham continued.

He added that the combination of home testing and lack of testing altogether in mild cases is contributing to this problem.

“What we are reporting and what we get as prevalence is probably only the tip of the iceberg,” he said. “The actual numbers may be higher.”

Shrewsbury adopts advisory The Board of Health voted to adopt an advisory made by the Worcester Division of Public Health as well as both UMass Memorial Health and St. Vincent.

The Division of Public Health is the lead agency in the Central Massachusetts Regional Public Health Alliance, of which Shrewsbury is a member.

an increased risk of COVID-19 complications, or who know someone who does. Community members are advised to avoid crowded spaces if possible and to consider wearing a mask when in such crowded spaces, including graduations and sporting or music events.

Community members are also asked to wear a mask as much as possible in restaurants.

In their advisory, the board noted that the COVID-19 subvariant — BA.2 — which is currently circulating, is more transmissible than the Omicron variant. It doesn’t “pack the same punch,” however.

a timeline about four weeks ahead of the United States.

The board noted that the United Kingdom has seen a “precipitous” drop in cases since the beginning of April.

“This indicates we just need to get through another month of this uptick before we will likely see infections decrease,” the board wrote.

Under risk classifications by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Worcester County has been designated as a red, high-transmission county.

Stockwell said that the CDC and the Shrewsbury Health Department have recommended that people wear masks if the community is in a red category.

While the board approved its advisory, Abraham said he didn’t think they should introduce a mask mandate at the moment. He noted that vaccinations have increased since the prior Omicron surge.

“I think ‘strongly encourage’ might be a way to just encourage residents to be mindful of the fact that [they shouldn’t] trust in just the numbers that are reported because there’s always much more disease than is reported,” Abraham said.

He continued, noting that all residents are vulnerable to current COVID-19 conditions.

“Our vaccines don’t completely protect us against getting disease,” Abraham said.

“They protect us against severe disease, hospitalization or death, which is a huge bonus.”

Wearing a mask whenever in public would be “responsible” to protect oneself and their fellow citizens, Abraham said.

He further encouraged residents to sequentially test if they test at home, noting that it could take several days for a test to be positive.

Other communities issue advisories Shrewsbury is not the only local community to issue an advisory in recent weeks.

Locally, the Westborough Board of Health issued a mask advisory on May 16 urging residents to wear masks in crowded public places or where social distancing isn’t possible.

Businesses still required to report cases As Shrewsbury issues its advisory, the Board of Health also on May 20 agreed to maintain its executive order requiring businesses to report positive COVID-19 cases.

Stockwell called this an “important tool” for the department to have.

“With the uptick in COVID cases, it’s just helpful for us to know if people are having employees or multiple employees testing positive,” Stockwell said.

This gives the department another “tool,” she said, to be able to provide guidance.

“We’re not out of the woods,” Stockwell continued. “I think everybody knows that.”

While asking for the full $140,000, Mizikar added that the town will be seeking funding through the state Municipal Vulnerability and Preparedness Program to offset those costs.

The idea for the project was brought forward by the Board of Selectmen and several residents.

Mizikar called it a “community-informed” plan to allow Shrewsbury’s town government to reduce its contribution to climate change by reducing or eliminating its greenhouse gas emissions. Consultants will advise and facilitate the plan.

The plan will further prepare the town to respond to and minimize the impact of climate change on local resources, infrastructure and buildings, he said.

Mizikar said the plan “will be actionable for the town and will inform and champion but not compel residents on how they and their households can reduce their own carbon emissions as they consider investments to their vehicles, homes and other matters that impact climate.”

Once the plan is created, it will be overseen by the newlycreated Assistant Director of Public Works position.

While some residents spoke against the article, noting concerns about spending more money and giving power to a few appointed people, many Town Meeting members voiced their support, noting that Shrewsbury has received funds for environmental efforts.

“Scientists worldwide agree overwhelmingly that climate change is real,” member Diane Jones said. “It is the result of burning fossil fuels, and it is a very serious threat to us, our

children and our grandchildren.”

She noted that the Board of Selectmen set goals in October — two of which were to harden infrastructure to prepare for climate impacts and to reduce the town’s impact on climate change. She also noted SELCO’s plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2032, which the selectmen endorsed.

SELCO management, Jones said, recommended that Shrewsbury develop a climate action and resiliency plan.

“The first part of that plan is now well underway — affordable, green, renewable electricity — but the rest of the job is up to us,” Jones said. “It’s up to us, the Town Meeting members, not SELCO.” She noted temperatures for this past weekend which were projected to climb past 90 degrees.

“Summer in May — that is not normal,” Jones said. “It’s a trend. When you combine high heat and humidity, people die.”

The article ultimately passed.

Building heights in limited industrial zone Town Meeting members approved an article that will allow the Planning Board to grant special permits for buildings up to 75 feet in the limited industrial zoning district. The article also allows loading in the front of buildings in the district, which had previously been prohibited and limited loading to the rear or side.

According to Director of Planning and Economic Development Bernie Cahill, uses for this district include light manufacturing, robotics, certain types of manufacturing of

medical equipment, logistics and warehouses.

The article was petitioned to be placed on the warrant by the Boston-based commercial real estate development company GFI Partners, which owns four properties in Shrewsbury including Worcester Sand and Stone.

This zoning district is spread across town, but is primarily located around Route 20 and in the northwest corner of Shrewsbury bordering Worcester and West Boylston, where Worcester Sand and Stone is located.

GFI Partners staff presented the article to the Planning Board earlier this month.

In that meeting, Vice President of Development Hayley Palazola told the board that the rise of e-commerce and a focus on optimizing the supply chain was increasing the demand for warehouses with more vertical storage space.

GFI’s attorney Mark Donahue noted during Town Meeting the article doesn’t mean that an entire building or its entire facade would necessarily be 75 feet in height.

When the article made its way to Town Meeting, though, several residents did voice their opposition, expressing concern about the height.

“In my opinion, this would have a detrimental effect to those residents,” member Phil Blumberg said.

Blumberg, who lives near Route 20, said he’s seen a lot of development in the area.

“I don’t think there’s a need for taller buildings in that area,” he said.

To put this height into context, Cahill said the Shrewsbury Tower at 36 North Qunsigam-

ond Avenue 100 feet to the top.

Mizikar said the article was an economic development initiative for Shrewsbury, adding that the percentage of commercial and industrial properties in Shrewsbury doesn’t rival its neighbors.

He noted that businesses contributing local taxes “provides some offset to residential properties.”

“As we consider economic development initiatives and try to remain attractive, we see the need to bring this forth for Town Meeting’s consideration,” Mizikar continued.

Other Town Meeting members also spoke in favor of the change.

“We’re always looking for ways to bring revenue to the town,” said member Donna O’Connor. “In order to do that, you have to find places where the construction can take place.”

The Worcester Sand and Stone property, she said, is “one prime location” where she didn’t believe a 75-foot-building could be detrimental, noting its access to the highways.

Route 20 has been a trucking road and is “finally seeing growth.” This is one of the last places that can bring revenue to Shrewsbury, O’Connor said.

“We have to be smart about what we pick for projects, and we have to rely on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board to protect neighborhoods,” she said.

Ultimately, Town Meeting voted to approve this article.

“ There’s a little bit of friendly competition, but it’s just really a bunch of women out there having fun,” Westborough Recreation Director Jenn Kirkland said in a recent interview with the Community Advocate. “There’s a good sense of community.”

League rekindles softball tradition Kirkland said that Westborough previously had a long history of women’s softball.

The program had fizzled out, though, due to a lack of enrollment.

Years later, Northborough Recreation Director Allie Lane had the idea of forming a league with teams from different towns to ensure that programs would have enough support.

That idea garnered backing across communities, drumming up excitement in Northborough, Westborough and beyond.

In Northborough, in particular, registration for three available teams filled in 24 hours.

“I’m pretty psyched,” Lane said earlier this year.

Speaking amid the league’s first season this month, Kirkland said that games had a great, fun atmosphere and provided an opportunity for players to meet new people.

“I think, if we can sustain that kind of attitude, we’ll be able to keep this going,” she said.

Games prompt positive reaction Kirkland said that the reaction so far has been positive, with many people who remembered the old women’s softball league in Westborough happy to see the sport return.

Others are getting a new opportunity in this sport through these new games.

Elena Moskal, one such Westborough player, said that she decided to join the team after seeing a post about it on Facebook.

Moskal said that she had not batted a ball since fifth grade gym class, and that she had never been on a team before.

“I thought this would be a great chance for me to get

to know more people and to experience the joy of a team,” Moskal said.

Moskal said that the experience had been very rewarding so far, saying that she had surprised herself with her athletic skill.

Moskal said she would definitely return in the future,

adding that she is looking forward to next year.

“I think a lot of it has been seeing the different women support each other,” Moskal said. “We have women in our fifties, we have women in our thirties, the skill level is very varied.”

On scene, police say, Ropiak was able to remove the owl from the road.

“We are happy to report that the owl appeared uninjured and was returned back to a tree,” the Grafton Police said in their statement on social media.

The police shared an image and information last Thursday afternoon, reporting that Officer John Ropiak had initially been dispatched to a call of a baby owl that had been seen “in the middle of the road” on Old Westborough Road.

AMSA student from Shrewsbury named 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholar

By Stuart Foster Reporter SHREWSBURY - Aryan Kumar, a high school senior at the Advanced Math and Science Academy from Shrewsbury has been named as a 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholar.

Kumar was one of 161 seniors chosen by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars out of more than 5,000 candidates this year, according to a recent press release from the U.S. Department of Education.

Created in 1964, the Presidential Scholars Program aims to recognize and honor “some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.”

It also honors students who excel in visual, creative and performing arts, as well as technical education.

Kumar was one of two students from Massachusetts selected.

The commission’s selection process is based on students’ “academic success, artistic and technical excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership.”

“It’s a very humbling experience as a whole,” Kumar told the Community Advocate

following this honor. “I did not expect in my wildest dreams to win.”

Kumar said the award would motivate him to work very hard in the future, saying that he is starting to see the fruits of success from his hard work throughout high school.

Kumar added that he is planning to attend Washington University in St. Louis and will study biology on the pre-med track.

He added that, for younger kids, it is important for them to be humble and give back to the community, and not just to focus on getting good grades and test scores.

“Our 2022 Presidential Scholars represent the best of America, and remind us that when empowered by education, there are no limits to what our young people can achieve,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in that previously mentioned Presidential Scholars announcement.

ARHS sophomore’s drawing will hang in U.S. Capitol Building for a year

Be Well Northborough kick off event set for June 22

NORTHBOROUGH – Northborough’s new Be Well Northborough initiative will kick off with a bang next month.

Residents and employees are invited to attend a community event to mark the start of the program on Wednesday, June 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Ellsworth McAfee Park.

A carnival-inspired event, the kickoff will feature a bounce house and a 65-foot inflatable obstacle course as well as inflatable games.

Attendees will also be able to play cornhole, basketball and volleyball. There will be snacks and a prize wheel.

Be Well Northborough is a new health and wellness initiative that was introduced to town leaders earlier this year.

The Be Well Northborough Working Group includes department heads from across town departments, including the police, fire, recreation, family and youth services, health and library departments, as

Retired NYC firefighter speaks at ARHS Memorial Day Assembly

By Stuart Foster Reporter NORTHBOROUGH - Students at Algonquin Regional High School received a unique look at history last week when retired New York City Fire Battalion Chief John Martorana spoke at the school’s Memorial Day Assembly.

Martorana, who was an active duty firefighter during the 9/11 attacks, highlighted the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation in his comments on May 17.

The Siller Foundation, which was founded by firefighter Stephen Siller’s siblings after his death on Sept. 11, 2001, engages in a number of efforts to support veterans, to tell the story of 9/11 heroes and much more.

Family launches Tunnel to Towers Foundation After Siller’s death, his brothers and sisters wanted to keep his memory alive by hosting a fun run in 2002, retracing the steps he took a year earlier from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to Ground Zero.

Roughly 2,000 people attended that first event 2002, where organizers raised money and donated it to an orphan-

age in Staten Island. They then continued to raise money in the now annual run for other causes.

At the most recent run in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were more than 30,000 people, Martorana said.

“It grabs all of Lower Manhattan, shuts it down for the day and becomes a massive block party with thousands and thousands of participants,” Martorana said.

Martorana described other charitable actions of the

foundation, like delivering more than 100 smart homes to veterans and paying off the mortgages of veterans and first responders who are killed in the line of duty.

The foundation also started doing disaster relief after Hurricane Sandy, further expanding its disaster relief to now take a nationwide scope.

Firefighter recalls 9/11 Though he was on active duty, Martorana was initially not working on Sept. 11, 2001.

All six firefighters who reported to work in his company on that day were killed.

“I got there maybe an hour or so after the towers were down, so I wound up spending the day there looking for people,” Martorana said. “Probably about 11 or 12 o’clock at night, I had to go back to my firehouse in Brooklyn and start talking to families.”

Teacher seeks firsthand account of history Gina Johnston, a social

studies teacher at Algonquin who organized this assembly, noted that her students were born in 2004 or later. That means they were not alive during the 9/11 attacks.

“So, when we teach it as history teachers, to them, it’s literally textbook history,” Johnston said. “So, I try to get them as many firsthand accounts of history [as possible].”

Martorana, who was a firefighter for 39 years, drove up from Brooklyn to talk to the students in Northborough after he volunteered to be a national representative for the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.

He said it was his first time giving a speech like this in front of students, adding that it was nerve wracking for him.

“I would much rather be in firefighting gear in a burning building than doing this,” he said.

By Jeff Theodore Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - It’s been almost 15 years since Dr. Jean Casello opened the doors to RenovoMD, and the very first customer who walked in still comes regularly.

“We don’t have a lot of turnover when it comes to patients,” Casello said of the medical aesthetics business, which specializes in non-invasive beauty treatments.

One patient who has since moved to Los Angeles still comes back for care, as do pa-

tients from places like South Carolina and Maine.

“It’s humbling that they return to see us,” Casello said in a recent interview.

“We’re very busy,” said Casello, who works with a nurse and an esthetician on her staff.

While the team is busy, though, it’s never too busy to follow the latest trends in medical aesthetics.

Casello said it’s important to keep current on innovations and noted that treatments are far more advanced now than they were in the early days of her practice.

“I love that this specialty is constantly evolving,” she said.

Team invests in training Casello, a former internist, said she also isn’t surprised by the profitability of the medical aesthetics industry, which is projected to bring in about $15 billion nationally by 2024.

Growth in the industry is being driven by decreased risks of complications, faster recovery times and lower costs, according to the American Association of Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery.

“I knew it was a cuttingedge field and was going to go somewhere,” Casello said of the industry’s growth. “It had the potential to be big and it has been, it’s incredible to see just how many people are just now trying these procedures for the first time.”

She noted her business, highlighting two of its major assets – experience and knowledge.

“Our strength lies in teamwork and the fact that we’re knowledgeable and have a desire to learn,” Casello said, explaining that the team benefits from between one and two training webinars per week.

There are also monthly inhouse training sessions.

“It’s important to learn and talk to our peers,” Casello said.

SOUTHBOROUGH – The Rotary Club of Southborough will hold its Food Truck Festival for three consecutive Wednesdays over the coming weeks at St. Mark’s Field off Main Street from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The festival had its first date on May 25. As of press time, remaining dates were scheduled for June 1, June 8 and June 15.

Each week will feature four new food trucks and has no cost to attend.

The Rotary Club and Main Street Bank are also sponsoring the Friends of the Southborough Youth Commission’s Cash4Campers initiative which helps families send their children to summer camp. Anyone who donates $20 to the initiative will receive a $10 voucher that can be used to purchase food from the trucks.

Public officials celebrate as Hudson Riverwalk project takes shape

HUDSON - Federal, state and local officials and delegates gathered at Cellucci Park in Hudson earlier this month for the presentation of $400,000 in American Rescue Plan (ARPA) money to help fund the completion of Hudson’s Assabet Riverwalk Project.

to – purposefully bridging local leadership and state and federal investment to transform what is possible and build a downtown ready for the 21st century,” State Rep. Kate Hogan said in a recent press release.

Taking shape along the Assabet River, the multiphase riverwalk project aims to protect the riverbank while creating new outdoor space for community members close to Hudson’s downtown area.

This month, Hogan lauded the project for improving accessibility and interconnectedness in this part of Hudson.

“I’m proud of the commitment and collaboration between municipal, state and federal governments that made these projects possible,” she said.

Community celebrates revitalization An initial portion of this project was funded via a Massachusetts Department of Transportation grant. That work involved installing walkways through part of Cellucci Park and adding new lighting and signs, among other things.

Further work has continued with ARPA funding focused on stabilizing and restoring the riverbank itself, which had been impacted by runoff from area roadways, overgrowth of invasive plants, and lingering factory waste, like the leather soles of shoes that were once manufactured in town.

Speaking on May 5, officials noted other projects in town, including the redesign of Hudson’s downtown rotary and South Street areas with pedestrian access, safety and local businesses in mind. They further highlighted how these efforts have coincided with work by businesses themselves and Hudson’s Business Improvement District (BID) to strengthen the local economy.

Residents, public officials and business owners alike have long lauded Hudson’s Main Street growth.

He credited public officials and the community at large for helping “clean up” the river while creating new spaces, like the riverwalk, for community members.

His sentiments were recently echoed by State Sen. Jamie Eldridge in comments this month during the riverwalk’s recent ARPA event.

“The Hudson Riverwalk will allow more residents to be connected to the Assabet River flowing through downtown Hudson, highlighting its role in the Industrial Revolution in Hudson, and how the Assabet River has been cleaned up since,” Eldridge said.

Northborough American Legion post hosts Veteran’s Coffee Hours

By Stuart Foster Reporter NORTHBOROUGH – The Vincent F Picard American Legion Post 234 in Northborough has been hosting Veteran’s Coffee Hours with a different speaker presenting each month since late last year.

For organizers, the program serves an important purpose, fostering connection and a space for education for a community of local veterans.

“It’s nice to meet other people your age and talk about things,” Post 234 Commander Rick Currier recently told the Community Advocate.

Currier said that Costello had initially approached him with the idea of the coffee hours five or six months ago, adding that he had completely supported the idea. While Costello expected to have five or six people attend, they quickly garnered a much larger

He said that, when he was trying to find resources and organizations, many talked to him as if he was a victim of something. Despite his military record, however, he did not qualify for many of the services, and he recalled being told at one veterans organization that he had not “lost everything yet.”

“It wasn’t until the suicides started happening with the

people I served with that I started wondering what’s going on,” Costello said.

Costello said that he realized that there is something is harmful in the transition process from military to civilian life, adding that he wanted to consolidate options so that veterans can find help or resources before their situation deteriorates.

He added that Easterseals’ Military and Veteran Programs are always looking for volunteers to help. Opportunities and events provided by MassVeteran are also listed on its Facebook page.

“We want to grow this because it needs to be grown,” Costello said.

Group plans event for LGBTQ+ youth at Westborough Senior Center

By Stuart Foster Reporter WESTBOROUGH – OUT MetroWest will hold a satellite event for LGBTQ+ youth on June 3 at the Westborough Senior Center.

OUT MetroWest is an organization that started roughly eleven years ago to help provide resources for LGBTQ+ youth in the MetroWest area. It holds these satellite events fairly regularly in towns throughout the area to overcome transportation obstacles for individuals who cannot easily get to the organization’s main address in Framingham.

Speaking with the Community Advocate, Program and Education Manager Lily Pearl said the goal of the satellite programs is to recreate what OUT’s space in Framingham offers. This seeks to encourage those attending to come to Framingham or join OUT

MetroWest online via Discord.

Pearl noted the benefits of regional programs like OUT, saying that Gay Straight Alliances in different communities often do not communicate with each other. As a result LGBTQ+ youth in nearby towns may not know each other.

“We’re doing one in Westborough but we’re inviting teens from all around different towns,” Pearl said of the upcoming event. “Anywhere that’s a little bit closer than Framingham, we’ll kind of spread the word out through their schools, libraries and other places.”

Organizer thanks Westborough While they had been doing online events earlier during the pandemic, the OUT organization did return to in-person events in March.

Pearl said that health and

safety protocols have been working well so far, with masks and proof of vaccination required to attend events.

“People were ZOOMed out,” Pearl said. “Especially students. For many of them school was just ZOOM the whole day.

They don’t want to hop on another ZOOM.” As a result, she said that people who had met each

other a year ago online were now meeting in person for the first time.

Pearl said that OUT MetroWest needs help finding spaces for events like this, adding that Westborough has been a great partner.

Event inspired by Boston art festivals Silverberg said she had the idea for the festival after she walked past the recently built Bay State Green several years ago. She said that she was inspired by the many art festivals she had attended when living in Boston, and she thought the green would be a great location.

Silverberg presented the idea to members of the Westborough Cultural Council, who invited her to come to a meeting. The council wanted to be a part of Arts In Common, and Silverberg became a member of the council. They then launched Arts In Common together.

Cultural Council Chair Holly Kenny said that organizers try to use Arts In Common as an opportunity to support artists from Westborough and other surrounding communities. Kenny said earlier this month that they had received around 40 applications so far this year, with a mixture of artists featured at previous Arts In Commons and new ones.

Within the Cultural Council, Kenny said that there is a jury committee to select artists.

“They have to be, not necessarily professional artists, but high quality work, and folks that do festivals and [who] are used to displaying and selling their work,” Kenny said.

Organizers emphasize community participation Arts In Common committee members emphasize the importance of community participation in art. One example is the event’s bottle cap community mural, which was created for the festival’s 10th anniversary in 2019.

Committee member Tracy Spadafora said that she wanted to do something that involved upcycling and had always loved the color of bottle caps.

So, she put up signs throughout Westborough asking people to contribute their bottle caps.

of bottle caps,” she said. “We probably have enough for another five murals.”

Spadafora worked with Westborough High School’s visual arts program to design the mural’s landscape.

Before the festival, Spadafora, her daughter and some of her daughter’s friends prepared the backing for the mural and painted the image on it.

During the festival, people were subsequently able to come up to the mural and screw or drill the bottle caps onto it.

The bottle cap mural has since been installed on the Bay State Common, remaining on display since last fall.

Event returns for 12th running Several years and a pandemic later, Silverberg is working on a public art policy that will create transparent guidelines for artists applying to create these types of projects.

“When the community participates in the public art project, it’s more meaningful to them,” Spadafora said.

In its 13th year, this will be Arts In Common’s 12th running after it was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Westborough plastic bag bylaw changes to go into effect in June

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter WESTBOROUGH - Changes to Westborough’s plastic bag reduction bylaw will take effect on June 20, requiring that all grocery and retail stores offering checkout bags charge customers at least $0.10 per bag.

Additionally, the bags must either be made of recyclable paper or be reusable — made from 100% post-consumer or biodegradable material.

This comes after Town Meeting voted in March to make these changes.

‘This is not a new concept’ Westborough’s bylaw already prohibited thin-film single-use plastic bags.

A part of the recent Town Meeting article, which was petitioned by Zero Waste Westborough member Nathan Askew, however, made changes to the definition of a reusable bag.

The previous definition described the material of such a bag as being either polyester,

polypropylene, cotton or some other durable material. Bags also qualified if they were made of a durable plastic that was at least four mils in thickness.

“This is why we’re seeing the Target bags that are just a thicker plastic,” Askew said, referencing Westborough’s Target location off Route 9.

Residents noted that the proposed article would close this loophole.

Under the changes, no checkout bags will be allowed to be given for free.

“This is not a new concept,” Askew said during Town Meeting. “This is something that a lot of places do.”

“It basically brings conscious of mind to the user so that it’s not so easy and convenient to go to the retail store or wherever you would like to shop and not bring a bag,” he continued.

Businesses seeking such an exemption should email Cela Dorr at cdorr@town.westborough.ma.us explaining a reason for the request.

Askew set up a table in the entrance to Westborough High School, where Town Meeting was held, containing biodegradable alternatives.

“Food contamination is one of the number one reasons why recycling doesn’t get recycled, even though only a small amount of recycling happens anyway,” Askew said.

Typical black plastic containers, even if they’re cleaned and placed in residents’ single stream recycling, may still end up in the waste stream because of the process used, he said.

“I believe if we instead had these containers that were biodegradable, you would be able to put these in the organic waste stream, which would help out our town in several ways anyway,” Askew continued.

Real estate market: The good news and the bad news

s the correction begins to slow the national increase in home prices …we all knew it would come to this and so it starts.

The first publicly obvious sign that the real estate market has begun to correct itself — the sudden and drastic increase in mortgage rates. In August of 2021, the interest rate for a 30-year fixed was at an all time low of 2.65%. Now, only 8 months later, the rates have risen to 5.8% varying on the lending institution and the credentials of the borrower.

This is a faster rise in interest rates for mortgages that the industry has seen in its history.

We haven’t seen these kinds of numbers for mortgage rates since 2018 when we ended the year at 4.94%.

So do you want the good

news or the bad news first? The bad news you say? The rates are expected to continue to rise this year. The Federal Reserve raised the target fed funds rate at its March meeting and is expected to raise them at each of their 6 remaining meetings this year. While the Federal Reserve doesn’t actually set the mortgage interest rates, its policies and actions closely correlate with mortgage rate fluctuation.

With economic activity and employment activity strengthening, many believe this is exactly what the Fed needed to do in an effort to control inflation and correct the supply and

demand imbalances.

Still waiting for the good news? Well don’t despair.

While rates are expected to increase several times this year, the increase isn’t expected to be in a straight line upward! There will be many fluctuations and rates will change week to week in many cases and are expected to settle somewhere in the mid 4’s. So no need to panic; home buyers who can’t afford the higher rates will have to be patient and time it right, but at least they won’t be priced out of the market.

Sellers too for the first time in a couple years will likely start to see less offers and more buyers holding off in periods of time when rates are higher.

The good news for them too, although home prices are expected to see a 10-15% correc-

tion by the end of 2023, is that it isn’t going to be a major crash like we saw in 2008-2009 but rather a slower and steadier rate over the next 18 months.

All in all, the change in the real estate market that’s expected this year should be a positive change for most involved.

A market as frantic as we’ve seen for the last few years is stressful and dangerous; it often leads to rushed decision making, bad financial decisions and a whole lot of remorse. This year’s changes should help the imbalance start to flatten out and prove to be a positive, welcome change to the past few years.

Westborough Scouts host Senior Citizen Pasta Dinner WESTBOROUGH - Westborough’s Boy Scout Troop 100 hosted its annual Senior Citizen Pasta Dinner earlier this month, welcoming community members on May 14 at the Westborough Senior Center.

The scouts served dinner, provided entertainment and shared a meal with seniors in attendance.

This event marked a return to normalcy, of sorts, after COVID-19 disruptions.

Normally held in the Senior Center, as it was this year, last year’s event operated in a drive-thru format, with scouts handing food through the car windows of guests outside the Senior Center.

Select Board member Ian Johnson noted that, while the board was “generally supportive” of the direction of the article, the article came to the board late in the process.

“This will impact businesses in our town and restaurants and they know nothing about this,” Johnson said. “So, they haven’t been talked to yet.”

He said it was “worthwhile” to go through a public process that could include the businesses. The businesses, Johnson said, may have ideas on how to improve the initiative.

Shrewsbury softball beats Westborough in late-season game

SHREWSBURY/WESTBOROUGH - A late season matchup between the Westborough High School and Shrewsbury High School varsity softball teams ended in a Shrewsbury win last Wednesday.

The game was Westborough’s senior day, with the teams playing to a 10-3 final score in Westborough.

Westborough’s win-loss record fell to 6-10 after another loss to Nashoba last Thursday, following last Wednesday’s Shrewsbury game.

Shrewsbury’s win-loss record was 5-11 as of May 19, with the Colonials following their win over Westborough with a loss to Wachusett.

Shrewsbury had one game left on its regular season schedule as of press time with a matchup against Andover set for Monday.

Westborough was just inside the playoff picture when the MIAA released its latest batch of division power rankings on May 19, showing the Rangers in 30th place in Division II. Shrewsbury’s 35th place ranking in the Division I listings put it just outside of qualification, which requires teams to either have a winning record or land among the top 32 teams in their division to make the playoff bracket.

Final tournament pairings will be set on June 1 for this year’s state championship tournament next month.

HHS softball eyes playoffs amid strong season

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor HUDSON - A number of members of this year’s class of senior Hudson High School (HHS) softball players started their varsity careers with a successful run to a state championship in 2019.

Years later, those same players are helping lead a program in search of another state title.

“Most of them were on that team and got to experience that whether they were on the field or on the bench,” Head Coach Laura Bowen told the Community Advocate last Saturday.

“I think they’re hungry to get another one.”

Hudson expands lead, defeats Nashoba The Hawks were in action at home on May 21, taking on

Nashoba for their Senior Night contest.

The game drew a large crowd to the HHS campus to ultimately watch Hudson defeat the Wolves by a 7-3 margin.

The game opened as somewhat of a back-and-forth affair, with Hudson opening a 2-0 lead in the third inning only to see Nashoba equalize the score in their next at bat.

Hudson kept the pressure on, though, getting Liv Sousa into position in the fourth inning to score on a triple from Sam Collette.

Hudson’s offense then roared, holding a 7-2 lead by the end of the sixth inning.

Though Nashoba clawed a run back in the seventh inning, Hudson was able to lock down and secure the win.

said after the final out.

She noted mid-game adjustments that helped Hudson crack Nashoba’s pitching and defense, crediting her players for making those pivots and performing at crucial points.

WHS notes graduating seniors set to continue athletic careers in college WESTBOROUGH - At least seven senior Westborough High School student athletes are eyeing continued athletic careers in college, having committed to a variety of Division I and III schools.

Recently honored through a running social media campaign by the Westborough Boosters, seniors gathered last week for a group photo.

“We just played unselfish ball,” Bowen said. “We put the ball in play whether to move runners or tag. We didn’t try to do everything ourselves. It was defining a team win all around.”

“I think we adjusted well,” she continued.

Hudson continues win-streak As Hudson halted Nashoba, the Hawks also extended a winstreak to five games, continuing a rebound after consecutive losses in a home and home series with Wachusett earlier this month.

Hudson had secured three consecutive shutouts prior to this game, defeating ActonBoxborough, Leominster and Blackstone Valley Technical High School by a combined score of 38-0.

“We’ve had a great week,” Bowen said.

She eyed the playoffs, noting room for growth in the state championship tournament, which starts next month.

“I think we’re playing good ball all around,” she said. “I still don’t think we’ve peaked.

But that’s a good problem. It’s a compliment to the girls.”

‘They have the potential’ Hudson honored seniors Caitlin Cassidy, Sarah Korowski, Abbey Nezuch, Taygan Lewis, Lauren Cole and Angel Bethea last Saturday, celebrating those players for their contributions to HHS softball over the years.

In speaking on each senior’s achievements and story, Bowen was frequently referencing their early high school glory in 2019, when a dominant Hudson softball program claimed a state title.

Now, in 2022, Hudson is poised to make another run, ranking in the top tier in Division III softball and hoping to continue momentum into the month of June.

“It’s fun to see them go through that at a young age and now they’re the leaders on the team,” Bowen said of this year’s seniors. “It’s up to them.”

“They saw how fun that was,” she continued, “and I think they can see that they have the potential.”

Dolores was the beloved mother of Garrett Sullivan and his wife Cheryl of Venice CA, Gregory Sullivan and his wife Gina of Rumford, ME, and Christopher Sullivan of Northborough. Dolores also leaves her six grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Christopher, Cai, Casey, Miles, Garrett and Amanda. She was looking forward to meeting her greatgrandchildren, Marilyn, Carter, and David shortly before passing away. Dolores was preceded in death by her daughter Joan Sullivan in 2022, her former husbands Garrett Sullivan of

He will be forever missed by his three daughters, Antoinette M. Zographos, Joan E., wife of Thomas W. Christo, who he loved as his son, and Paula James. His legacy will live on in the lives of his grandchildren, William James Christo, Kathryn Lee Christo, and Robert James Meiczinger. In addition to his wife and brother, Jim was predeceased by his beloved grandson, Jason Tudorel Meiczinger in 2016.
