By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter NORTHBOROUGH - The south chimney of the White Cliffs mansion in Northborough will be partially disassembled after town staff reported that the chimney has been deteriorating.

During a White Cliffs Committee meeting on May 26, Town Administrator John Coderre called the chimney a “safety hazard.”

As a result, Director of Public Works Scott Charpentier and Facility Manager Shawn Thompson have been working on assessing the chimney and securing quotes from contractors to remove it.

Chimney in ‘rough shape’ Built in 1886 as a summer home for Daniel Wesson and his wife, Cynthia, the town purchased White Cliffs in 2016, saving the mansion from demolition.

Since then, crews have been doing restoration work and making repairs to the building.

REGION - The majority of area high schools held graduations this past weekend, honoring the Class of 2022 and recognizing an at times tumultuous journey through high school.

“They said it would only be two weeks…” read one banner near the stage at Marlborough High School’s (MHS) ceremony, referencing initial COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020.

“We lost it all and learned the true importance of school,” Algonquin Senior Class President Lindsey Stone said during her remarks at her school’s ceremony.

Shrewsbury and Grafton high schools held ceremonies last Thursday, with Shrewsbury dodging the threat of rain for its evening graduation.

Grafton convened in the Hanover Theater for its first graduation in that location since 2019.

Westborough High School and Hudson High School celebrated on Saturday before MHS and Algonquin held their events on Sunday.

St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury graduated its Class of 2022 last month.

The Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA) and Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School will now cap the region’s graduation season this weekend, with AMSA holding festivities on Friday night and Assabet gathering on Saturday on its campus in Marlborough.

SHREWSBURY - Although Lake Quinsigamond is still a popular summer destination, it was a much SHREWSBURY d i f f e re n t THEN NOW place years ago.

In addition to the White City and Lincoln Park amusement parks, there were many clubs and dance halls along the Lake’s shores.

The dance hall at Lincoln Park was a popular spot for years, well in to the 1940s. Even during the tumultuous years of

World War II, couples found time for dancing.

Many of them met their future spouses at these dances.

One such love story involved this writer’s Aunt and Uncle, Josephine (Perna) and her husband Warren Kalagher.

They met while Warren was still in the service. They met at the Lincoln Park Dance Hall and later married, had three children, and spent many happy years until Josephine’s death in the 1980s.

Although Lincoln Park and the dance hall closed in the 1950s, many local older residents still have fond memories of the place.

COMMUNITY VIEWPOINT Recently in Northborough, two new Amazon warehouses were placed in town. Although these new warehouses have brought new jobs to individuals in the surrounding area, the truck traffic that has now been introduced into Northborough neighborhoods creates a possibility for a tragedy to happen. Moreover, less than three miles away from the warehouses at 330 and 350 Bartlett Street, there is a regional high school that over 1,400 students attend. The mixture of a high school and neighborhoods near new Amazon warehouses is an extremely dangerous combination and a high risk for disaster.

The truck traffic has increased so much on the neighborhood roads that the high school track team is no longer able to run on those roads to reduce the likelihood of an accident happening. No parent wants to know that their

child is running on the same road that massive eighteenwheelers use for transportation. Amazon had agreed to keep its trucks on Interstate 495, but that has not always been the case. Oftentimes, residents have caught the trucks through their security cameras or by eye sneaking through the neighborhood to reach their destination quicker. Not only do the trucks driving through the neighborhoods increase the traffic but it also increases the risk of a disaster happening. Moreover, there have been reports that school buses have been forced down roads they normally wouldn’t go and some of the delivery trucks have disrupted some residents’ front lawns.

To restrict the amount of truck traffic that occurs in Northborough there should be an investment in signs and directions that can suggest the truck drivers in the right direction. Thus, the trucks will not have to enter any areas that might provoke a tragedy and they will not have to worry about getting lost since the directions will point them on their way. The truck traffic

problem does not have to last long if individuals are willing to take the wheel and drive this situation to safety.

Ethan MacGillivray Northborough ___________________________ The re-construction era needs to come to an end. The board of selectmen in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, remains committed to selling the Beal School’s 4-acre site to a private developer. The next stage is to remove this structure and transform it into a local residential area known as the Beal Commons. Individuals would not be well served by the new development, which includes 55 residences, a 0.4-acre public park, 8,000 square feet of shop space, and a World War I memorial. Many local residents oppose this proposition, as the Beal Deal is a reckless, impulsive decision in which a memorable landmark is being destroyed for unnecessary, extra apartment space.

Despite the fact that Shrewsbury is already overcrowded, with a population

of 38,910 people, there are hundreds of unoccupied rental units in the town. There are also additional units under construction, such as the Edgemere Crossing complex.

The new Beal development lacks creativity because it only consists of a singular developer, meaning, it will be in competition with every other ordinary apartment complex.

In addition, many residents value the Beal School, a landmark that has stood for almost a century. It is a treasured family heirloom that also functions as a play area and ball field for children. More than 15 residents spoke up during the topic’s public hear-

ing, with some claiming that the property was a “valuable part of the neighborhood.”

When it comes to neighborhood peace, the new Beal would significantly increase traffic in the town center, causing chaos. Overall, the residents’ opposition to this $16 million proposal should be considered. The Beal project is evidently not a great deal since it has a detrimental effect on the town. A waste of time, resources, money and the desecration of a heritage building. The Beal School should remain as it is.

WooSox Shrewsbury Night raises $1,100+ for SYFS SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury Youth & Family Services (SYFS) is getting a $1,165 check thanks to proceeds from the WooSox’s Shrewsbury edition of its Town Takeover series on May 22.

Five dollars from each of the 233 tickets bought through a special Shrewsbury Night link went to the eventual SYFS donation.

“We were very impressed by the Shrewsbury pride that was evident throughout the ballpark,” WooSox Public Relations Coordinator Alexis Dill wrote in a message to the Community Advocate.

The Town Takeover series aims to celebrate individual communities around Worcester with their own night at the WooSox’s Polar Park.

Each Town Takeover game features a beneficiary for donations while highlight-

ing community figures and groups with pregame ceremonies.

SYFS Executive Director Christine Mowry, Director of School-Based Services Alison Eccleston and Outreach Coordinator Vanessa Ramos represented their organization in Worcester on May 22.

Lt. Gov. and Shrewsbury resident Karyn Polito was honored as a “hometown hero.”

The St. Mary School Chorus then performed the National Anthem, with Shrewsbury native Carly O’Brien later performing God Bless America on the field.

Town Takeover events will now continue locally, with a Grafton night scheduled for June 25.

Shrewsbury opens community fridge near Senior Center

SHREWSBURY - A community fridge has officially come to Shrewsbury.

The Rotary Club held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday of last week for the new fridge, which is located next to the Senior Center on Shrewsbury’s municipal campus on Maple Avenue. Now open, the fridge provides free food to community members in need.

As Rotary President Sandy Burgers described it, the motto of a community fridge is “take what you need and give what you can.”

She was joined last week by State Rep. Hannah Kane and State Sen. Michael Moore.

“I want to thank you all for putting this here,” Kane said of the fridge. “It looks like it was always meant to be here.”

Kane also presented a check for $500 from the charity foundation run by her and

Selectmen support project Several months ago, Burgers sent a letter to the Board of Selectmen asking to locate the fridge next to the Senior Center.

The Rotary Club asked the selectmen and town to partner with the club to cover the cost of electricity for the fridge.

When the letter was discussed with the Board of Selectmen in February, Casavant estimated that costs would total about $60 per year, which the selectmen ultimately approved.

Legislators highlight need During the fridge ribbon cutting last week, Burgers recognized eighth grader Anushri Mishra, who created the logo for the fridge, and Phil Blumberg, who built the structure the fridge is located in.

have enough to eat and/or who do not know where they may get their next meal.

“This is a great idea,” Moore said. “People don’t really realize how many people in the community actually need food.”

He said that people often think food insecurity only occurs in the urban areas or among certain demographics. He said state data, however, indicates there are “so many communities that have people in need of food assistance.”

“And it’s even worse now with the inflation that we’re dealing with,” Moore said.

According to Project Bread, 16.4% percent of households were food insecure in Massachusetts in March, which is the most recent data.

In Shrewsbury, this fridge is now one of several efforts to address food insecurity.

Last year, the town received a $75,000 earmark through a state ARPA spending bill to establish a food bank.

Meanwhile, St. Anne’s Parish already operates its own food pantry, which is open weekly on Mondays.

“Thank you for thinking of everyone in your community

because I can guarantee you that you’ve got people here that are probably too embarrassed to come forward, and they really shouldn’t be,” Moore said. “This is a great service that you’re providing and desperately needed.”

Rotary Club’s fridge guidelines The Rotary Club had outlined several guidelines for donating to the community fridge.

It encourages donations of products like fresh produce, eggs, bread, dairy, frozen food and pet food, as well as meals and goods from certified kitchens. It also encourages sealed personal protective equipment and hygiene supplies.

The club, meanwhile, has discouraged donations of raw meat and seafood, homemade food or leftovers, rotting or wilted food, unsealed food or hygiene supplies, expired items, alcohol or medication, severely dented cans, ungraded eggs and clothing and housewares.

Weather phenomenon rolls dense pollen cloud across region

REGION - A drop in temperatures and suddenly gusty wind across the region helped bring a particularly dense cloud of pollen to the area on Tuesday of last week, rolling across communities as a green-tinted fog.

Community members took to social media to note the surprise scene while meteorologists shared their perspectives.

“I don’t recall ever seeing it so dramatic,” meteorologist David Epstein wrote on Twitter just before 10 a.m.

WBZ meteorologist Eric Fisher referred to recent conditions as “the crescendo of tree pollen season.”

“Plenty of breeze to blow it around,” he tweeted.

Multiple experts also shared radar imagery showing pollen and other particulates clearly displayed as a sharp, bright line streaking east to west across Massachusetts.

The event, a 5K race held both virtually and in-person at Hopkinton High School, will raise funds to benefit The Angel Fund for research on ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, at the UMass Chan Medical School.

The registration fee is $45 for in-person participants and $25 for virtual participants.

The race, held in honor of Sharon Timlin, has raised over $2 million since its first running.

Timlin was the wife of former Red Sox relief pitcher Mike Timlin and died of ALS in March 2002 after being diagnosed in May 2001.

Westborough applies for grant for Otis Street corridor improvements

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter WESTBOROUGH - Westborough town leaders are moving forward with a grant application that would fund a number of improvements along Otis Street.

The application includes plans for work at the intersection of Route 9 and Otis Street.

Improvements will also run along Otis Street itself.

“It’s a long term project,” Town Planner Jim Robbins said during a May 9 Advisory Finance Committee meeting. “It’s intended to address capacity issues that we have along Otis Street with the improvements to the Route 9 intersection, the widening of Otis Street and new sidewalks and improving safety for those that wish to cross Otis Street during the day.”

Otis Street study highlights problematic Route 9 intersection Initially conceived in 2019 as part of the conditions for approval of Amazon’s robotics facility at 50 Otis Street, the developer Atlantic Management was asked to provide a corridor study for the entirety of Otis Street, including the intersection with Route 9.

Robbins called the intersection a “headache” and “one of the top five most difficult intersections in the Commonwealth.” “[Department of Transportation] considers this a failed intersection,” Robbins said.

Robbins said they got the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) involved with the study and conducted a road safety audit in 2021 of the Route 9 and Otis Street intersection. The final corridor study report was then submitted to the town in September 2021.

According to Robbins, the study examined 13 intersections along Otis Street. Those intersections ranged from driveways exiting onto the street to intersections like Route 9 and Otis.

Robbins said that the audit led to a series of recommendations for improvements.

Robbins said the proposal now aims to create additional dedicated right hand turn lanes at the Route 9 and Otis Street intersection. Another

proposed improvement at this intersection includes pedestrian crossings.

Among other improvements, Robbins noted that there would be a new signalized intersection at the driveway exiting Westborough’s nearby Target location onto Otis Street.

“Right now, you know that

it’s very difficult to get out at rush hour — whether it’s the morning, the lunch time or the evening,” Robbins said in comments to the Advisory Finance Committee.

There would be a sidewalk from the Target driveway to the entrance of a new Amazon project at 64 Otis St. According to Robbins, a

driveway for that project will additionally align with the driveway to the nearby Speedway Plaza, which would be moved. Robbins said this new intersection would have its own signal.

The audit also recommended multimodal connections, including to the Boston Worcester Air Line Bike Trail,

to run on the west side of Otis Street and across Route 9. Robbins noted that there would be sidewalks along the full length of Otis Street.

Other prominent driveways and intersections would be improved with crosswalks and crossing lights, according to Robbins.

Graphic novelist with Westborough roots to see biggest release yet in July

By Stuart Foster Reporter WESTBOROUGH - An Idahobased graphic novelist originally from Westborough will release a new book with his largest production run yet on July 19.

Mat Heagerty’s “Lumberjackula” is being published by Simon & Schuster. It will be available locally at Tatnuck Bookseller.

“This is just a higher print run than I’m used to and definitely just a different kind of publisher,” Heagerty said in a recent interview. “They have a further reach than what I’ve previously worked with.”

Book follows previous releases “Lumberjackula” is a story about a boy who comes from a mixed lumberjack-vampire family. His parents want him to go to their former middle schools, which are specifically lumberjack or vampire middle schools.

ther side of his family, Heagerty said, but does not really want to go to either school because he would rather go to a school for dancers.

“It’s about him learning to kind of choose his own path and realizing that his family is going to be behind him no matter what,” Heagerty said.

Heagerty said that a lot of inspiration for the story came from his experiences raising his children, saying that he feels excited when his daughter draws because it is an interest of his.

“I’m most excited when she’s herself, but you kind of can’t

help but sometimes push some of the things that you want on your kids,” Heagerty said.

Heagerty had published other graphic novels before, mostly through the publisher Oni Press.

One of them, “Unplugged and Unpopular,” is about a girl who has her cell phone taken away before an alien invasion begins. The other characters are controlled by their phones and unable to see the invasion, so she teams up with her grandmother and her senior friends to fight the aliens.

Robbins said the town has already begun negotiating easements with property owners to make the sidewalks possible.

However, he estimated that it may take between three to five years until the project is completed.

MassWorks applications were due on June 3. Grant winners will be announced in the fall.

ARPA funds Last month, the Select Board voted to allocate $250,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to serve as matching funds for a MassWorks grant if one is awarded to Westborough.

The ARPA allocation would draw from the $5.7 million in federal ARPA dollars given to Westborough.

According to Town Manager Kristi Williams, the town will be asking the state for between $5.5 to $6 million in grant funds for the project.

The ARPA allocation, she said, is important to free up some of that state money.

“We’ve heard loud and clear from the state that they understand that communities have these ARPA funds,” Williams said. “If we’re looking at getting grants for these priority projects, they’re looking at the town to use some of these funds to show that it is a priority.”

Shrewsbury brothers become youngest North American bridge champions

By Stuart Foster Reporter SHREWSBURY - A pair of Shrewsbury brothers recently made history in the game of bridge, becoming the youngest people to win a limited North American Bridge Championship (NABC) event.

Eric Xiao, 13, and Jeff Xiao, 10, won the 0-10,000 point Knockout Teams event at the Spring 2022 NABC in Reno, Nevada.

They played on a team with their father, Victor Xiao as well as Sarik Goyal of Worcester and Kyle Rockoff of Gilbert, Arizona.

“It feels amazing because I never thought that I’d break the record for winning a limited NABC event,” Jeff said in a recent interview.

Victor Xiao said he first got interested in playing bridge when he was in college and graduate school in the late 1990s. He stopped playing for more than a decade to focus on making a living. But he still enjoyed reading books about the game and translating them from English to Chinese.

One day in 2019, Victor had notes about a system and noticed Eric reading them. About

a month later he tested Eric about it.

“It’s a very complicated system, like Morse code,” Victor said. “I tested him and, surprisingly, I found out that he memorized 90 percent of it.”

Victor and Eric then went to a local bridge club in Sterling.

While their debut was not successful, they kept practicing and earned their first points at a club a month or two later.

They continued their improvement in June 2019, per-

forming well at a regional tournament.

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, Victor and Eric began practicing bridge online.

Jeff then started playing in 2021.

The recent spring championship was the trio’s first in-person event since coming together as a team.

“It’s way out of our expectations, because I had no expectation at all before we went to Reno,” Victor said.

Players to compete again in July The 0-10,000 point Knockout Teams event is limited to players who have accumulated less than 10,000 points, which are accrued over time at bridge events.

Victor said that massing 10,000 points is extremely difficult, noting that there are still very good players who have not passed the threshold.

The previous youngest champion before Jeff and Eric had won a 0-1,500 pairs event in 2011.

Celebrating their recent win, Eric and Jeff represent an anomaly as very young players in a game that is typically associated with much older players.

The three will now attend the next NABC event in Providence, Rhode Island, from July 14 to July 24.

At the end of the year, Jeff and Eric then plan to try out for the national U-16 team in Chicago to represent the US in next year’s world championship.

Marlborough man killed in car crash in Boston

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury’s town hall has transitioned to summer hours for the first time, effective May 31.

Town Manager Kevin Mizikar announced the change during the Board of Selectmen’s May 24 meeting.

These summer hours will remain in effect through Sept. 2.

As part of the change, operating hours will be extended on Tuesdays to keep Town Hall departments open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Departments will then operate from 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays.

Hours on other days will remain unchanged.

“We appreciate the opportunity to hopefully serve the residents better and give the employees a little…extra break on Friday afternoons,” Mizikar said.

Mizikar described these changes as being part of a pilot program to see if the additional hours are beneficial to town customers.

While other offices will open at 8 a.m., the Department of Public Works and Office of the Building Inspector will be open on weekdays starting at 7:30

MARLBOROUGH - A 22-year old Marlborough man was killed early Saturday morning when he was allegedly hit by a car while walking on Storrow Drive in Boston.

The State Police confirmed the news hours later, identifying the victim as Brandon Jennings and announcing that they had arrested a 36-year old man in connection with the crash.

Michael Rodriguez of Lynn was subsequently charged with offenses including motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor, operating under the influence of liquor and leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in injury or death.

Police said the crash took place around 1 a.m. at the off-ramp to the Tobin Bridge and I-93 north.

State police said they did know why Jennings was walking along Storrow Drive, but said a preliminary investigation showed he had been struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene.

Emergency crews responded and performed emergency aid. Jennings, however, was pronounced dead at the scene.

As law enforcement investigated the

crash site in Boston, state police said a witness who reportedly saw the crash take place contacted them after following the involved vehicle to an apartment building in Lynn.

That witness reportedly provided a location and license plate number to state police.

Troopers subsequently arrived on scene in Lynn, where they said they found Rodriguez in possession of the key to the car that had been involved in this crash.

A breath test showed Rodriguez with a blood alcohol content of .119 around 3 a.m, according to state police.

Though police said the car involved in this crash was registered to another individual, they explained in a press release on Saturday that troopers arrested Rodriguez “based on the totality of evidence, including physical evidence and witness statements.”

In addition to other charges, Rodriguez is facing a failure to stop or yield charge.

He was released on bail on Saturday, with an order to appear in Boston Municipal Court on Monday for an arraignment.

State police noted on Saturday that their investigation is ongoing.

The case, meanwhile, will be prosecuted by the office of Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden.

A supercomputer display was recently set up inside the Northborough Free Library.

By Stuart Foster Reporter NORTHBOROUGH - A new display at the Northborough Free Library shows computer chips and 7-foot-square blowup plot pictures of their internal design as part of a parallel supercomputer from the 1990s.

It’s part of an effort to preserve a piece of computer history, which display coordinator Dick Swee worries is becoming lost.

“I think there’s a lot of stuff that’s getting lost because either people have moved away or they don’t have a place to put these things or keep them,” Swee said in a recent interview.

Region enjoys place in computer history Many people in the MetroWest area worked in computer development in the 1980s and 1990s. Along the way, Swee, who worked in the industry, said he encouraged some of them to find ways to preserve any artifacts they had, rather than throw them away.

Swee explained that a particular supercomputer he helped design originally had five processing chips in its main board. Two of those chips are now in the Northborough Library. The other three have been lost.

The supercomputer Swee worked on was designed to run a version of the UNIX OSF-1 operating system for a startup called Kendall Square Research. The supercomputer could take existing applications and break them up into different parts that could run at the same time.

ing its increased accuracy to break the Earth into smaller areas for analysis and forecasting.

“With one processor, it becomes hard to do the whole Earth, but if you can do thousands of processors you can break the land area into smaller and smaller squares,” Swee said. “Then, you can predict the weather for more specific areas and more accurately.”

Swee said the computer was also used commercially for transaction processing, particularly for reservation systems used by airlines.

Display finds home in Northborough Swee searched for different locations seeking a venue for the display donation. The Northborough Free Library ended up being a good fit.

“When the supercomputer was developed, the headquarters were in Waltham and the people who worked on it, at this point, are dispersed all over the country and the world,” Swee said. “A lot of them are still in the area but not everybody.”

The supercomputer display was framed and hung by John Gaston of Gastonart & Frame, Inc. It can be viewed in the computer room of the Northborough Free Library.

‘This feels a little too familiar’

ARHS alumni organize demonstration following recent mass shootings

People gathered in the Northborough Town Common for a demonstration against gun violence last Sunday.

NORTHBOROUGH - Northborough community members dressed in orange and gathered in the Town Common on May 29 to demonstrate against gun violence following recent shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, N.Y. As organizer Sarah Saeed described it, orange is the color that hunters wear in the woods for protection.

“It is a color of visibility and has thus become the color of the anti-gun violence movement,” Saeed said.

way to respond to other issues that they care about. Zaia said that they wanted to create a space for people to “gather and mourn lives lost and create a call for action for the community.”

“We’re tired of things like this

happening,” Saeed said. “We’re tired of having to hold demonstrations like this one, but we feel it is necessary.”

Saeed added that she and Zaia wanted to give current Algonquin students “a platform to

share their voices.”

“That’s why we’re here today,” she said.

“Unfortunately, this is yet another mass shooting that has occurred at a school,” she said.

“For me, any way that I can support in making sure students are heard, that we’re listening and that we’re actively trying to address the root cause at hand is really important to me.”

Kilcoyne was a child in the aftermath of the Columbine High School shooting in 1999.

She said she remembered the trauma of the shooting and recalled teachers trying to make sure that students were O.K. During the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, Kilcoyne was then working as a staffer in former Rep. Harold Naughton’s office where she worked on updating gun policies.

She noted that the children who died during the Sandy Hook shooting would be about the same age as some of the students at last month’s event in Northborough.

“It’s devastating to me that we’re here yet again,” Kilcoyne said.

‘There are too many to count’ The recent shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, left 19 students and two teachers dead.

That came just a week after a gunman killed 10 people in a supermarket in Buffalo.

Attendees of the demonstration in Northborough remembered each of the victims.

“This feels a little too familiar,” Saeed said. “Before Uvalde it was Oxford, and before that — Santa Clarita, and before that — Parkland, and before

that — Marshall County, and North Park, and Sandy Hook, and Chardon, and Cleveland, and Blacksburg, and Santana.”

“I could go on,” she continued. “There are too many to count; too many students that we failed to protect; too many families destroyed.”

Current, former ARHS students speak Events in Northborough last month featured a performance of John Denver’s “Sail Away Home” by Carly Mahowald as well as speeches by former and current Algonquin students.

Junior Sara Medina discussed mental illness. Sophomore Ava Arcona talked about how people are “desensitized to the horrors of gun violence in America.”

“We as a nation are so accustomed to these tragedies that the news of yet another school shooting was simply a drop in the bucket, but as students, the danger feels very real and very close,” Arcona said.

She recalled an incident in November where a staff member at ARHS accidentally set off an emergency lockdown announcement during passing time. Over the PA system, a voice told students and staff that there was an active shooter on campus, advising individuals to take immediate shelter.

“Immediately, we were thrown into disarray,” Arcona said. “Students rushed down the halls, cramming themselves into classrooms while still having no clue as to what was going on.”

She said she remembered the “look of panic” on a teacher’s

face as he “frantically” waved students into his classroom.

Principal Sean Bevan discussed that incident in an email to the Community Advocate on Wednesday of last week, explaining that a staff member “inadvertently engaged a prerecorded message” announcing that the school was going into lockdown.

“She immediately announced that this was an error and that we were not in lockdown, and I announced something similar right afterwards,” Bevan wrote.

He shared an email that had been sent to students, staff and families explaining what happened. The email said that the school was using the error as an opportunity to strengthen its safety protocols, including how and when they employed the lockdown protocol.

Bevan said they immediately disabled the feature and haven’t had issues since.

Arcona said it was “business as usual” at ARHS after the announcement.

“After the adrenaline had subsided, all I felt was tired,” she said.

Arcona said she felt the same exhaustion when she heard the news of the Uvalde shooting, just as she felt the exhaustion during lockdown drills.

She further criticized lawmakers who “do nothing to prevent gun violence from happening” and act surprised when another shooting occurs.

“We no longer feel safe at the place we spend the majority of our time,” Arcona said. “This cannot be our new normal.”

“Students, children, adults dying because we are too scared to regulate our precious firearms is not normal,” she continued. “Police standing outside the scene while they wait to get rescued is not normal. I hope that all of you will hear this and decide that enough is enough.”

‘Let’s work together to create a kinder world’ Speeches continued on May 29, with speakers calling for gun violence protection laws, universal background checks and a ban on automatic rifles.

They also called on individuals to make their voices heard.

Medina called gun control “extremely vital,” noting that shooters at Robb and Sandy Hook elementary schools shouldn’t have had access to the weapons they used.

“But the focus in the wake of mass shootings is exclusively on gun control,” she said. “And while gun control is undoubtedly necessary, the political divide on gun rights shifts attention away from other factors that contribute to violence.”

Medina said community members should learn more about mental illness and be

willing to talk openly about issues.

“Let’s work together to create a kinder world where mental health is a top priority, and let’s take on the future with a movement that finally breaks the numbing cycle of school shootings,” Medina said. “The future of America is in our hands. So, let’s be the change.”

We were not brilliant financial planners and legal minds.

We did what made sense for our family at the time with assistance from others. One thing our attorney suggested was charging mom a single dollar a year. “Why? The “stuff” question is a deep one. Nobody wants others in their stuff perhaps because of privacy and at some point, pride. We tend to accumulate stuff….at first, it’s a box. Then it is the attic, then the basement, then the garage. Just stuff everywhere.

I’m no better. I moved into my condo 8 years ago and the attic was filled. I’m not planning to pass soon, and it still bothered me. So, I hired a neighborhood kid to bring everything out of the attic and trash it. Except tax records.

And my childhood trains. And the 35-year-old Celtics jacket I don’t fit in anymore.

Then I moved on to the garage. And the secret place under my stairs.

I still need to focus on closets. There was an era when I wore suits to work every day.

Those suits were pricey! As were the ties. So, I’m the guy with closets full of outdated clothes (cuffed pants and ties of every width.)

My point is parents can spend some time getting ahead of this. When they don’t, the kids are left with a lot of work. My view is attack this from a position of value…. let the family take everything they want (or label everything), let an estate sale value/sell what they can, donate what can be donated, and then have a junk removal company take the rest. Some people take pride in filling dumpsters…. I prefer to deal with items of value and let the pros deal with the rest.

Decluttering is often the first step in any sale, and this is way to lean into it.

Northborough’s White Cliffs chimney to be disassembled White Cliffs | from page 1

Convening last month, this was the first time that the White Cliffs Committee met since December 2020.

According to Coderre, the chimney was one of the items highlighted in an assessment done by DBVW Architects and submitted to the town on Dec. 7, 2020.

The architects noted that there are nine fireplaces in the mansion that rely on four chimneys.

“The south chimney, which is the most elaborate, displays severe damage,” they wrote.

The study noted that the chimney had “significant” brick displacement, structural cracks and “extreme” paint failure.

Coderre explained that the architects initially recommended that, if the budget permitted, the chimney should be rebuilt and repointed with some disassembly done as well.

“At the time, the committee decided not to pursue that due to the cost and the limited budget that we had while we were trying to figure out how

to best proceed,” Coderre said.

He continued, “Unfortunately, the chimney did not do well in a recent storm.”

Coderre said the chimney was in “rough shape” and had lost some bricks.

When the bricks first let loose, Coderre signed a contract for a little over $6,000 for a mason to secure the chimney.

However, when the mason arrived and used a lift to examine the chimney closely, Charpentier said they noticed that the

back of the chimney was bowed out “substantially, as well.”

The mason, Charpentier said, realized they couldn’t support and secure the chimney as it is.

Town concerned about chimney collapse Thompson said the town’s main concern is getting the chimney down before it falls into the building.

“The way it’s bowed out in the back it could really at any

point fall either into that front porch or into the turret on the right hand side if you’re looking at the building,” he said.

As such, the town plans to disassemble the chimney down to the roofline.

Thompson said structure below the roofline seemed to still be “somewhat intact,” meaning repairs may be limited to repointing.

Town staff proposed disassembling and capping the chimney to make it safe and watertight. Then, the town can get accurate numbers on how much it would cost to rebuild, Thompson said.

Committee approves $60,000 disassembly Ultimately, the White Cliffs Committee agreed to spend $60,000 for the disassembly work, with town staff estimating a pricetag of more than $150,000 to completely rebuild the chimney if the town chooses to pursue that option at a later date.

Corbin advocated for a result where there isn’t water entering the building and where some of the chimney bricks are preserved.

“I’m not excited about rebuilding the chimney at this point,” Corbin said.

He said that, when the committee goes through its budget, there may be other things in the mansion that need to be addressed.

“If we had deep pockets, that’s a different topic,” Corbin said.

Fellow member Tom Reardon also voiced concerns about the prospect of rebuilding a 130-year-old chimney to meet current building requirements.

“I’m just cautioning everybody,” he said. “You can’t reconstruct what was there because it won’t meet current code, and what those implications are, we don’t know yet.”

Coderre added that those codes would apply if the town wanted the chimney to be functional, as opposed to being purely decorative.

Northborough plans ARPA listening session NORTHBOROUGH - Residents will soon have an opportunity to weigh in on how Northborough should allocate its American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

The town will be holding a listening session on June 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Algonquin Regional High School library.

Northborough is slated to receive about $4.5 million in federal ARPA funds.

Discussions on how the

town will allocate those funds, meanwhile, have been ongoing in recent months, with the Board of Selectmen already releasing some funds for several projects, including a community wellness initiative called Be Well Northborough.

The upcoming meeting will be streamed live on Northborough Cable Access TV government channels. Community members can also attend the meeting in person or via Zoom.

In the meantime, residents can provide input to the Board of Selectmen either in advance of the meeting or after it via email at ARPAinput@town. northborough.ma.us. The selectmen ask residents to use “ARPA Priorities” in the subject title.

Stan was raised on a farm in Marion, NY with his parents Anna and Maynard Adriaansen, brother Melvin and sister Marilyn. He moved to Westborough in 1984 with his wife and children to work at Raytheon as an electrical engineer. He worked there until his retirement. He was a doer and loved working with his hands. He could build and fix pretty much anything around the home. He was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics.

He was a devoted husband and father who would do anything for his family. He is survived by his loving wife Marcia and his children Eric, Steve, Lynn,

Westborough prepares for July 4th Block Party

By Ed Karvoski Jr Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough July 4th Block Party is back on schedule.

This event is traditionally scheduled as an annual holiday kickoff celebration on the Friday before the Fourth of July. It was canceled in 2020, though, due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, though.

Last year’s block party then took place later in the summer after the state lifted restrictions on large gatherings.

“It was well-attended with people excited to get back out together and celebrate,” Recreation Director Jenn Kirkland said of the 2021 event.

“We weren’t 100 percent back to normal yet,” she added, however.

Kirkland and the other members of the Westborough July 4th Block Party Planning Committee have now scheduled this year’s event for Friday, June 24 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Bay State Commons.

Committee adapts to changes The committee is accustomed to adapting to changes.

The block party originally took place along several blocks of West Main Street with vehicular traffic closed for the event.

Citing safety concerns, town department leaders suggested that the committee relocate the event to Bay State Commons in 2018, Kirkland noted.

“We partner with the police, fire and DPW, and whatever we need to do for safety is of the utmost importance,” she said on behalf of the committee. “I was a little nervous about moving to Bay State Commons, but now that we’ve been there a few years it feels like that’s where the block party should be.”

Entertaining on the bandstand Two popular acts from past block parties will once again provide live entertainment on the bandstand. Each has gained nearly 50 years of performance experience.

The Reminisants, an oldies cover band founded in 1973 and longtime staple of this event, will perform classic rock-‘n’-roll music.

“We always book the Reminisants the day after each block party,” Kirkland noted. “They’re so energetic and they play music that people of all ages can enjoy.”

Rotarians will distribute free American flags. Lions Club members will get dunked in a tank. Newcomers Club members will create temporary tattoos.

Fun challenges will include a word search by Central One Federal Credit Union, lawn games by the BORO Sugar Shack, and cornhole by the Westborough Historical Society.

Stationed onsite will be food and dessert trucks including Dean’s Concessions, Uhlman’s Ice Cream and VeeBop. “The committee works really hard on this event and it’s nice to see it all come together on that night,” Kirkland said.

“It’s a great way to kick off the summer.”

Westborough faces lifeguard shortage for Lake Chauncy beach

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter W E ST B O RO U G H - L a ke Chauncy may not be staffed this summer due to a lifeguard shortage, according to Westborough Recreation Director Jenn Kirkland.

Kirkland told the Select Board during its May 24 meeting that the department only had seven new applicants to be a lifeguard.

Two of those individuals had limited availability.

Three current staff members were anticipated to return.

“This is an unfortunate situation,” Kirkland said. “But we’re not alone. Almost every community that I’ve spoken with is having the same struggle hiring lifeguards.”

Town staff recently talked about putting a cautionary sign at the lake.

Assistant Town Manager Kimberly Foster said the recommended language for those warning signs is “No lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk,” though staff are currently working on its exact language.

Chair Ian Johnson said it was disappointing. But he added that he felt this was the right decision.

Town ran recruiting effort The town had previously spent about four months “recruiting hard” to attract lifeguards, Kirkland said.

She outlined the various ways the town has tried to get candidates, including advertising on social media and in email blasts.

The town reached out to the Boroughs Family Branch YMCA, Westboro Tennis and Swim Club and other swim venues.

They, likewise, tried recruiting kids who had applied to be camp counselors. Staff even put a banner on the fence to the Lake Chauncy beach.

While the staff ran through different scenarios, however, Kirkland said it wasn’t feasible with the amount of applicants that ultimately came in.

“I just don’t think it’s fair for the community to have to pay for a service that we, frankly, can’t deliver, and I wouldn’t want to put anyone – whether patrons or the few lifeguards that we did have – in any kind of unsafe situation,” Kirkland said.

From the time she was a small girl, she visited her parents’ physical therapy practice in Northborough. In doing so, she developed a commitment to rehabilitation based on each person’s goals.

“People know that something’s wrong when they can’t do something they love,” she said in a recent interview.

Whether it is a particular movement related to a sport, or a limitation in daily activities, “we work with them toward attaining their own individual goals,” Bowie said.

In serving their clients, Bowie and her team strive to build a therapy plan that mimics the key activities of each patient.

“One of my therapists was

treating a snowboarder and wanted to create a treatment environment that emulated snowboarding,” she said. “He built a custom setup for his patient. He said he thought of it the prior evening, and when the patient arrived, he had rigged together a step and a BOSU ball to provide a platform similar to the balance needed for snowboarding.”

One of Bowie’s recent successes was with a young lacrosse player who had suffered a knee injury.

His twin brother, who Bowie was treating, mentioned the injury.

“I knew in my heart what the injury was,” Bowie said.

“But I never like to create panic.

This patient had suffered a PCL tear, which is extremely rare. It had to be surgically repaired, and then he started therapy with me. The patient had a full scholarship to Saint Anselm College and had to red shirt

“People tell us what they need and want,” she said.

Bowie’s approach is a contrast to physical therapy in the 1990’s, when machines were often used for rehab. A patient back then might gain strength in one particular muscle, but that would not translate to improvement in overall function.

“Science shows that it’s better to provide functional rehabilitation associated with common activities, such as climbing stairs or bending over the washer,” Bowie said.

Where Hardy Physical Therapy stands out is what Bowie refers to as their “old-school” approach in which the therapists work with patients as the need presents itself. Some patients come from other physical therapy practices where they had a 30-minute limit for each treatment session.

“No one is going to tell me when the work is done,” Bowie said. “We customize our patients’ experience. We aren’t on a stopwatch; we end each session based on the patient’s needs.”

In addition to helping athletes recover from injuries, Hardy therapists serve the “weekend warriors” - people who go out and hike Everest and then come for therapy because everything hurts.

The district recently announced this effort, saying it is committed to supporting the social, emotional and academic development and well-being of its students.

WESTBOROUGH - Westborough marked a first with its monthly employee excellence award last month, honoring TJ Voutas of the Department of Public Works’ Cemetery Department following a private citizen’s letter.

The town announced this in a press release on Monday, noting that the citizen had hailed Voutas as an “outstanding member of the town’s DPW department.”

The citizen’s letter noted Voutas’ “dedication to our loved ones’ graves,” regularly going out of his way to respect the sensitivities of grieving families.

“With great care, TJ has addressed certain requests made by this and other individuals, ‘dealing every day with grieving loved ones picking out plots for burial with pure respect,’” the town said.

Ideally, there would be at least 15 lifeguards for Kirkland to feel comfortable staffing the beach.

While Kirkland said that number may seem high, she noted that the applicants often don’t have full availability.

Last year, with 13 lifeguards on staff, there were not enough staff members.

“We had callouts,” Kirkland said. “There were vacations planned, things of that nature.”

Select Board discusses opening beach gate Kirkland said that the town is not planning to open the gate to the Chauncy beach, adding that people can access the area by going around its fence.

Supporting the decision to not run insufficient lifeguard

services, some Select Board members expressed their concerns about this specific plan.

Patrick Welch recalled recently taking his granddaughters to the playground at Lake Chauncy, lifting their strollers over rocks to get around the fence and wheeling across the beach’s sand to get onto a sidewalk to get to the playground.

“If that gate was open, I would have immediately been [able to go] right into the sidewalk and not to have done that,” Welch said. “I can only imagine mothers having to do that with two and three children to bring them to the playground.”

He called for the gate to be open during daylight hours.

This presentation was an advisory to the Select Board and town staff plan to have more information regarding Lake Chauncy in the future.

“I even heard policemen at Grove saying how nice it was,” the letter writer wrote.

The letter praised Voutas as a “respectful young man” and a “wonderful person.”

“As it is said that one compliment in writing represents forty unwritten concurring opinions, it can be assumed that there are many other residents who equally appreciate TJ’s efforts to go out of his way to let them know their loved ones are not forgotten and continue to be honored whether or not his efforts are being recognized,” the town wrote in its press release this week.

Girl Scouts plan garden Beginning their efforts last fall, Girl Scouts met with Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation officials to discuss ideal locations for a new pollinator garden, which is designed to support crucial pollinator species.

SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury’s Lake Street park has a new pollinator garden near its prominent storywalk and trailheads.

The garden is the work of Girl Scout Troop 30930, which worked with town officials to plan the project as part of their Silver Award process.

Cadette Scouts involved in the project include Meena Lakshmanan, Shruti Sivashankar, Amy He and Aarya Patel.

Several parents have also supported this work.

Girl Scouts then volunteered at the Garden Club’s annual Plant Sale earlier this year, receiving a separate donation of

plants from the Club.

“We’re getting the plants from the community and we’re giving back to the community,” Sivashankar said.

Girl Scouts build garden Girl Scouts were on site at Lake Street Park late last

month, first digging out their garden location before adding new soil and planting their native plants themselves.

Girl Scouts have since assumed water and maintenance duties for the summer, though the garden is designed to be largely self sustainable.

Lake Street Park is located off Lake Street in Shrewsbury, adjacent to SAC Park. The pollinator garden is located at the end of the Lake Street Park driveway.

Troop 30930 further plans to release a website soon educating community members about the pollinator garden.

Shrewsbury High School celebrates graduation

SHREWSBURY - With a turn of a tassel, the Shrewsbury High School Class of 2022 graduated last Thursday evening.

“It feels like a perfect night to recognize the Class of 2022 for your hard work and perseverance that enabled you to meet the requirements to earn a Shrewsbury High School diploma,” Superintendent Joseph Sawyer said in comments during the ceremony.

Among the speakers were Salutatorian Penelope Crosby, Valedictorian Dixi Han and School Committee Vice Chair Jason Palitsch.

Han said one of her most memorable moments from senior year wasn’t pandemic-related. Instead, it was a “bandaid crisis” during freshmen orientation, when a freshman got a papercut.

“When someone did finally find a band-aid for a kid, the relief that washed over his face made me realize that what he

really needed wasn’t the bandaid at all but comfort, support and connection,” Han said.

As a freshman, Han said that comfort was what she needed.

She said she can look at freshman memories like accidentally walking into a Latin class with only secondhand embarrassment because of her classmates and the “sense of security and support we’ve managed to create at SHS.”

Sawyer recalled that, on the first day of school at the new Maj. Howard W. Beal Elementary School, a student told him that the school “looked like a place where we can all be heroes.”

“I think he was right,” Sawyer said during graduation.

“Your strong education has provided you with the foundation to act heroically when the circumstances require it. I’m confident that you all have the ability to honor truth, promote justice and advance our nation’s values.”

This is not easy work, Sawyer said. He added that the students need to demonstrate the “everyday heroism” of persevering when they face challenges.

“I believe that you have what it takes to make that difference in our community, our nation and our world,” Sawyer said. “So, I’ll conclude by paraphrasing that first grader – this looks like a class where you can all be heroes.”

‘Just be you’: ARHS holds 2022 graduation

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter NORTHBOROUGH - Families and loved ones cheered on Sunday morning as members of the Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Class of 2022 tossed their caps into the air.

The display capped this year’s ARHS graduation ceremonies, in which 322 graduates received their diplomas.

“Over the past four years, you have learned, competed, laughed, cried, celebrated, grown, persevered and endured together,” said Superintendent Greg Martineau during his welcome comments.

“Although I don’t want to speak for others, I’m sure that many would agree that we are excited for your next journey whether traveling the world, joining the military, starting a career or going to college,” he continued.

Stone reflected on the class’ elementary, middle school and freshmen year experiences and memories. “[We] then remember when we lost it all and learned the true importance of school — each other,” Stone said.

Stone called her class’ sophomore and junior years a “hiber-

nation” for their senior year.

This year then came with “so many highs,” Stone said, such as filling the stands for athletic games and being able to hold pep rallies, senior nights, plays and musicals and prom.

She shared two lessons she learned from her senior year.

One — give back to help and make others happy, though Stone urged class-

mates to not forget to also give that love to themselves. Two – don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Stone thanked several people, including her fellow classmates.

By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Westborough High School (WHS) celebrated its 150th graduating class on Saturday when the 292 students of the Class of 2022 assembled for their outdoor ceremony.

For the first time since the pandemic hit, the ceremony included the WHS Senior Choral Union singing the national anthem under the direction of Alyson Greer Espinosa. Also returning this year was instrumental music performed by the WHS Band directed by Evan Doyle.

Surrounding the turf field were decorations from the previous evening’s Memory Lane Stroll for the graduating seniors and their families. Memories then continued at the podium as School Committee Chair Lisa Edinberg welcomed attendees to the ceremony.

Class President Sasha Wilkinson noted that her classmates are currently the only grade at WHS to experience “a single year of complete normalcy” when they were freshmen.

As seniors, they subsequently revived a number of events that had been canceled due to pandemic restrictions.

“The participation, patience and resilience of every single student has begun to not only rebuild the community events that we once had, but also expand them even more,” she said.

Superintendent Amber Bock drew on personal experiences in her comments to express an appreciation for interacting with different personalities.

“The years ahead of you have plenty of room for people and perspectives that will challenge and fascinate you,” she told the graduating seniors. “All of them can enrich you.”

Principal Brian Callaghan commended the graduating seniors for rising to face multiple challenges and for becoming role models.

“Your maturity, responsibility and extraordinary achievement in every part of this high school have genuinely provided a fabulous model for those who will follow,” he said. “Thanks to each of you for how you’ve conducted yourself in making good on our core value of mutual respect and commitment to meaningful learning.”

Marlborough High School holds 2022 graduation ceremony

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor MARLBOROUGH - Marlborough High School (MHS) celebrated its graduates this past weekend, marking a return to a traditional graduation ceremony format after two years of COVID-19 disruptions.

Addressing graduates on Sunday morning, speakers acknowledged the impacts of the pandemic while also looking to the future.

“What does one say to an amazing group of young people that have endured and persevered through so much?”

Principal Dan Riley asked at one point “Wherever you go and whatever you do,” he ultimately said, “continue to be kind.”

The ceremony specifically featured comments from Mayor Arthur Vigeant, Schools Superintendent Michael Bergeron and Riley, as well as Salutatorian Sarah Cronin, Valedictorian Courtney Sweeney and Class President Adham Hussein.

He honored Bergeron, who is leaving his superintendent position this month, before highlighting Bergeron’s story as an example of someone seizing an opportunity for an exciting new job.

Bergeron, who has spent more than a dozen years in education, is now set to become the Chief Operating Officer at a game publisher in New Hampshire.

“When opportunity knocked, Mike answered the door and will soon be off to a new chapter of his life,” Vigeant said.

Sweeney structured her speech as a letter to her eighth grade self, responding, in kind, to a letter that her eighth grade self had written to be opened around graduation.

“Maybe halfway through, you realize that I would want a little more insight from you in the letter,” Sweeney said.

“The final line is different from the rest.”

Sweeney recited that line before analyzing it further —“Hope your life is better then.”

She reflected on growth and hope, discussing her next steps and voicing a closing message.

“Hope will be the best gift you give yourself,” she said.

She further reflected on the journey to date, noting a sense of home at Hudson High School.

“Even though it’s time to move on, we will always remember this place,” Champeau said. “This school impacted us and changed us for the better.”

Medeiros began his speech by playing a clip from the song “Come Out and Play” by The Offspring and asking the graduating class if anyone could guess who the artist was.

Medeiros identified the band’s singer Dexter Holland, who has a PhD in molecular biology, as an example of how people should be able to reenvision themselves as they get older.

HUDSON - The Hudson High School Class of 2022 celebrated its graduation on Saturday at the Morgan Bowl.

The program, among other things, saw speeches from Hudson School Superintendent Marco Rodrigues, Hudson High School Principal Jason Medeiros, Class President Kate Champeau, Class Vice President Alessa Maiuri and Salutatorian Abigail Maston.

Charles Togneri was additionally recognized as this year’s valedictorian.

“Today is a celebration,” Rodrigues said in his remarks, “the celebration of a journey that started thirteen plus years ago for these 150 high school seniors.”

Rodrigues described these years as a time of “enormous transformation and change.”

He then asked the graduating seniors what the next 13 years of their lives would look like, asking which transformations and changes they would be a part of and lead.

Rodrigues said changes in life should remind those in attendance not to lose sight of what is truly important to them, adding that the graduating class should evolve with these changes.

“I ask that you start this new phase of your life by embracing kindness and tolerance as your unconditional core values,” Rodrigues said.

Champeau, likewise, celebrated the milestone.

“Class of 2022, we made it,” Champeau said. “It’s time to turn the page and start the next chapter we’ve all been waiting for since we first walked through the doors.”

WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough Lions Club recently awarded its 2022 Post-Secondary Education Scholarship to Westborough High School senior Riya Parikh.

In a press release, the Lions Club said it chose to award the $1,000 scholarship to Parikh for her community service, academic performance, and “ability to achieve success despite overcoming obstacles.”

The Lions Club further thanked supporters of its Rubber Duck Derby, which was held back in April, for helping fund the scholarship.

HUDSON - A Hudson student recently won $30,000 as part of a scholarship to support her studies at the University of Dallas.

Megan Scott was identified as a Sumners Scholar by the Texas-based Sumners Foundation.

The foundation selects its scholarship recipients based on academic excellence, civic engagement, and a capacity for leadership, as noted in a press release.

Scott is one of 43 students nationally to receive a Sumners scholarship in 2022.

“The Sumners Scholarship is a very prestigious scholar-

ship,” Sumners Chairman Jerry Reis said in a press release.

“Sumners Scholars have made significant contributions to their communities, state and country. Following in the footsteps of Congressman Hatton W. Sumners, we are pleased to support students working to improve the political system, address issues through public policy, educate others about civic responsibility, and be active, productive members of society.”

Scott is a 2019 graduate of the Advanced Math and Science Academy in Marlborough.

She is currently a sophomore at the University of Dallas, where she is majoring in politics and art, as noted on a biography page on the university website.

The scholarship, which is for $500, is awarded to local high school seniors who demonstrate exemplary support and participation in choral music and plan to continue working with choral music in college.

O’Grady plans to study Music Education at the University of New Hampshire while focusing on vocal studies.

“Hannah has demonstrated a passion for choral music, a commitment to musical excellence as well as taken leadership roles in choral ensembles throughout her high school music career,” the Mastersingers wrote in a press release.

SHREWSBURY - The Shrewsbury Garden Club recently awarded its $1,000 2022 scholarship to graduating Shrewsbury High School senior Hailey Luke.

Luke had been accepted to multiple colleges as of last month and is planning to major in environmental engineering focusing on classes in areas like climatology and sustainability.

Luke is an honor student with experience in SHS groups including the Helping Hands Club and Food and Health Club. Luke has also volunteered at the Presbyterian Thrift Shop, Andy’s Attic and the Special Olympics.

She has played on the girls varsity tennis team, spending two years as a captain.

“Hailey states in her essay that she’d ‘like to spend her time on Earth doing something worthwhile,’” the Garden Club noted last month. “She feels that she can accomplish that goal with the classes she’s going to take so that she can help preserve the earth for future generations. The Garden Club is proud to help her reach her goal.”

Ranked 32nd overall entering this year’s state tournament bracket, the Titans managed to hold off 33rd-ranked Beverly in their preliminary round match,

securing a 4-1 win.

That punched Algonquin’s ticket to a Round of 32 clash with Lincoln-Sudbury, which ended in a 5-0 Lincoln-Sudbury sweep on Monday.

“Congratulations on a great season,” Athletic Director Mike Michael Mocerino tweeted following Monday’s seasonending loss.

Algonquin baseball advances in state championship tournament NORTHBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH - An underdog season continued on Monday for the Algonquin Regional High School baseball team, which downed St. John’s just a matter of days after defeating Peabody in their playoff opener on Saturday.

Ranked 27th overall, the Titans squad beat Peabody at home in Northborough by a score of 6-3.

That put them into the Round of 32, where they took on St. John’s with their season on the line.

Though now seeking an upset, Algonquin carried momentum with it, tracing a five game winning streak through the regular season, the recent CMADA tournament, and its most recent Peabody game.

Algonquin started that unbeaten stretch on May 23 with a win over St. John’s, securing additional wins before defeating Shrewsbury High School for a CMADA title last Tuesday.

The Titans promptly kept things going against the Pioneers, falling behind early before howling to a 7-5 win.

Algonquin was next scheduled to face Central Catholic High School in the Round of 16 on Wednesday as of press time.

Westborough boys tennis dominates in playoff opener

WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough High School (WHS) boys tennis team swept its way into the next round of the state championship tournament on Monday with a 5-0 win over King Philip Regional High School.

Hosting their playoff opener in the Round of 32 after a preliminary round BYE, the second-seeded Rangers were able to handily defeat the 31stranked Warriors.

Westborough has been dominant throughout this year’s spring season, massing a 12-4 win-loss record.

The squad hadn’t lost a match since April 28 as of press time, taking 11 consecutive wins across nearly six weeks.

Six 5-0 sweeps in that batch included a CMADA tournament finals win over Algonquin on Tuesday of last week, which vaulted the Rangers into the playoffs on a high note.

The team was due to advance to the Round of 16 on Wednesday to host Dartmouth back at WHS as of press time.

Assabet Valley student recognized for bowling success, welding sculpture

By Stuart Foster Reporter MARLBOROUGH - A junior at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School recently won both a bronze medal for bowling and a gold medal for a welding sculpture.

The honors came within a week of each other.

Sofia Ramirez-Granick won her gold medal at the Massachusetts Skills USA competition for welding sculptures at Blackstone Valley Technical High School on April 29.

“I really just went for the experience; I didn’t expect to get a medal or anything,” Ramirez-Granick said of the bowling win. “It was really exciting. It truly was a dream come true for me.”

Student wins bowling glory Ramirez-Granick started bowling when she was 10-years old. She was inspired by her brother, David, who had also bowled.

Ramirez-Granick, whose grandparents live in Colombia, said it had then been a dream for her to bowl for the country’s team.

She was eventually offered a spot to bowl. And though most of the players she bowled alongside live in Colombia, she said she knew most of them from traveling

to visit her grandparents and training at bowling.

“It was really cool to get to know them more and see their normal day, compared to what I would normally do getting ready for a tournament,” Ramirez-Granick said.

“They’re used to getting up early for tournaments, and here tournaments are at noon or 2.”

Student honored in welding Separate from bowling, Ramirez-Granick said she was extremely excited to see that her welding work was worthy of a gold medal at SkillsUSA. Her sculpture was Day of the Dead-themed and had a sugar skull on the front with a bridge going down from the top of the skull to a boat with a Catrina in it, representing the relationship between Mexican people and their ancestors.

Ramirez-Granick said the sculpture was inspired by her Hispanic background, adding that she has always loved seeing how Mexican people celebrate their ancestors.

“Getting the chance to go to Mexico kind of pieced all of those together to inspire me for the piece,” she said of the latter bowling trip.

Ramirez-Granick became interested in welding after visiting her brother’s backto-school night when he was an Assabet student.

She saw sculptures students had welded and entered the metal fabrication shop because of her interest in art.

“I just fell in love with the shop. Everything about it was what I wanted to do,” Ramirez-Granick said.

Continuing her journey, Ramirez-Granick will next go on to the national Skills USA tournament, which is being held in Atlanta this year.

Hudson baseball claims CMADA title, begins state playoffs

HUDSON - A tight pitchers’ duel broke open in the fifth inning of the Central Massachusetts Athletic Directors’ Association (CMADA) Class B finals in Hudson on Tuesday of last week.

The Hawks baseball team then held on and beat Nipmuc, securing a tournament title on the eve of bracket seeding for this month’s state championship tournament.

“It’s huge,” Hudson’s pitcher Brady Stuart told the Community Advocate after the game.

Hudson scores in fifth inning Held under the lights at Guidotti Field at Hudson High School, this game pitted Hudson against Division III rival Nipmuc.

Ranked sixth in updated state playoff power rankings on May 19, Hudson held a slight edge over the seventhranked Warriors coming into this game.

Closely matched, the teams then settled into a largely scoreless affair, battling into the bottom of the fifth inning in a 0-0 tie.

That’s when Hudson was finally able to advance runners before ultimately taking a 1-0 lead.

“That was a huge sigh of relief,” Stuart said.

He added that he was then confident that his team would score again.

“That’s kind of who we are,” he said. “We built some momentum.”

ing six outs in the sixth and seventh inning.

‘We put balls in play’ Stuart ended the day with 14 strikeouts, pitching the complete game shutout and walking no one.

“It was a great pitcher’s duel,” head coach Tim Reinhardt said of the performance.

“Brady pitched well, their pitcher pitched well.”

In a year of standout pitching throughout Hudson’s rotation, Reinhardt further lauded his larger crew.

“Just to know any time that you put any of these guys out there, whether it’s Brady or [Jason] Jakobsons or [Max] Person or Conner [Madden], that you’ll be in a game and have an opportunity to win it, it’s huge,” he said, referencing other pitchers.

“We always know that they’re going to give us everything they got.”

Reinhardt similarly commended his team’s offense, noting their ability to pounce on the Warriors when their time came in the fifth inning.

“Hard on the line, hard on the ground — if you do that, you make the other team make plays and you put pressure on them,” he said. “That’s what we did.”

“We put balls in play and we were able to scratch a couple runs,” he continued.

Playoffs start Friday Hudson had recently maintained momentum going into its CMADA finals game, down-

ing the Marlborough Panthers on Memorial Day with a 7-1 final score.

The team then jumped into its state tournament bracket on Monday, shutting out Norwell in a 10-0 win.

Hudson was next due to face Newburyport on Wednesday in the Round of 16 as of press time.
