Wade last Friday.

In talking with the Community Advocate, attendees shared their reactions to the news..

“It shouldn’t be up to the government,” Macy Sharp said of the legality of abortion. “It should be up to each individual.

There’s also so many different circumstances that it shouldn’t be up to anyone to decide.”

Roe v. Wade was a landmark case that protected the right to have an abortion.

The court then voted 6-3 to overturn it last week, effectively allowing states to ban abortions within their borders.

man with an aortic aneurysm, which is a weak spot in the wall of a major blood vessel that can be fatal if it ruptures, is told that nothing can be done to help and that he should get his affairs in order. Then he learns about a procedure at UMass Memorial Health called FEVAR that could save his life.

A worried patient has a biopsy on a suspicious spot on her lung. While she is still asleep from the anesthetic, the biopsy is reviewed by a cytopathologist who determines the spot is cancer, so the surgeon immediately removes it. And a process of treating lung cancer that normally takes months is performed in a couple of hours.

Another patient needs hospital-quality care. But in this case, her home becomes a hospital, outfitted with monitors and medical equipment. Daily visits from the hospital staff make it possible for the entire “hospital stay” to occur in the comfort of her own bed and surroundings.

These are examples of innovation at its finest, innovation that is transforming health care by making it more accessible, cost-efficient and, yes, more human. SHREWSBURY - A recently acquired scrapbook provides a look back into the life and times of a (then) teen-aged young lady from Milford during the late 1950s.

After reviewing the scrapbook, it becomes apparent that she, like many other teens back then, was very taken up with Elvis Presley, who was wildly popular during those years.

There are several clippings regarding Elvis and his songs and appearances, including a photograph of him in one of his signature outfits. The photograph has his signature on it, but chances are it was not original.

Another item, with a more local connection, is the ticket stub shown in our photograph — it is from the Edgemere Drive-In. The note in the scrapbook tells us: “Went to the Edgemere Drive-In to see Elvis!” This was followed by a menu from the iconic El Morocco Restaurant in Worcester, which had a note next to it: “We went to see Elvis Presley at the Edgemere Drive-In in Worcester (really Shrewsbury) with Johnny and Joanne. After we went to the El Morocco.”

Today, the drive-in is long gone — a retail/apartment complex which includes a Market Basket store will soon be opening on the Route 20 site where it once stood.

The difference in flavor may be the result of Canadian regulations that do not restrict the mash bill, allowing distilleries to create their own unique recipes using different proportions of rye, corn, and malted barley. Regulations also permit other alcoholic beverages, such as aged wine or sherry, to be added to the final product. Distillation takes place in large column stills, and spirits must be aged in new wood for a minimum of three years before being bottled. Most whiskies are blends that are 40% ABV (alcohol by volume). Hudson celebrates Juneteenth Dear Editor: On Monday June 20 Hudson’s second annual Juneteenth was a very successful event and enjoyed by a large number of residents and town guests! Coordinated by Mercedes Murphy, The Phoenix Fund Collaborative, Students Against Ra c i s m , a Hudson High school student led club and advisor Caitlyn Bradford, the Hudson Anti-Racism Group, Jeannie Vineyard, Bria Milbery, Maggie Crowley and Abby Morgan.

The event started at Wood Park with speeches by the students followed by a walk to Town Hall. At Town Hall the event was begun by a beautiful land acknowledgment by Anna-Celestrya Carr, artist and filmmaker. Two students shared poetry and a speech highlighting their

experiences and hopes for the future. Representative Kate Hogan spoke about the need to continue to look forward and celebrate the progress that has been made against hatred and racism. holiday and the need for more financial equity for people of color. He cited a Boston study illuminating the financial inequity between black and white families and the need to invest in more equitable solutions for economic equity in our state.

Marlborough resident paints childcare center’s stairwell for Eagle Scout project

By Stuart Foster Reporter MARLBOROUGH – When Andrew Fisher tried to decide what to do for his Eagle Scout project, he knew that he wanted to do work to benefit a place that had been important in his life.

Fisher, who will begin studying art education at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the fall, also wanted his Eagle Scout project to reflect his passion for art.

Ultimately, Fisher decided to paint a mural of characters from various children’s stories and fairy tales in the stairwell at the Cottage Children’s Center, which he had attended when he was younger.

“That stairwell is very intimidating, especially to littler children, so when he chose that I was delighted,” said Cottage Children’s Center Executive Director Marley Couchon. “It has made a huge difference in that space.”

Located on Union Street near Marlborough Hospital, the Children’s Center offers an array of child care programming.

The stairwell walls were originally painted bright yellow, which Fisher said was intimidating for children leaving their parents to go to school.

To make it more welcoming, Fisher and a team of volunteers painted over the walls with characters like Rapunzel, Humpty Dumpty and the seven dwarfs on a blue background.

Fisher stuck to stories that are not copyrighted and are in the public domain.

Following that rule, some of the characters painted are from the book version of “The Wizard of Oz” rather than the movie version, which remains copyrighted.

This caused quite a stir with some of the children, who watched the ongoing progress of the stairwell. Fisher at first painted Dorothy’s iconic ruby-red slippers as silver, the color they are described as in the book.

“The younger children were so smart, they were like ‘That’s Dorothy, but her shoes are the wrong color,’” Fisher said. “So, that was the one thing that I had to change mid-process.”

stories represented on it.

For his project, Fisher also replaced lines of grip tape on the stairs that had been worn out.

He additionally had a shadow box custom made for an American flag in the stairwell that had previously flown over the U.S. Capitol Building.

With his work now complete at the Children’s Center, Fisher said that it feels wonderful to be an Eagle Scout.

“I feel a sense of accomplishment because I’ve spent all the years doing all the necessary things to move up in the ranks,” he said.

As local leaders shared their reactions in a series of state-

ments, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker signed an executive order that formally protected access to reproductive health care services in Massachusetts.

“Massachusetts is a place where we want to maintain

access to health services, including abortion rights and maintain bodily autonomy,” Church said, referencing Baker’s action.

Her message for Hudson and state officials is, “We won’t go back.”

“We want to make Massachusetts a sanctuary state so people can travel here, will feel here and that people who assist people who travel here will not be punished and will be encouraged to extend access to people,” Church said.

Marlborough names high school adventure course after former teacher, MLB pitcher

By Stuart Foster Reporter MARLBOROUGH – Marlborough High School’s (MHS) new adventure course now has a new name, honoring former teacher and professional baseball player Kenneth Reynolds.

The Marlborough School Committee voted last month to rename the course. The course, which presents a combination of physical and teamwork challenges to users, is located on a series of structures hung from utility poles on the MHS campus.

Speaking at the School Committee’s June 14 meeting,

Marlborough Public Schools Health and Wellness Supervisor Todd Turcotte noted that Reynolds was a physical education teacher in the Marlborough Public Schools for more than 30 years. He was also an instructor for the school’s Project Adventure program, which utilized a former iteration of the district’s adventure course.

Reynolds won a teacher of the year award in 1998, and he is in the Marlborough High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Turcotte said.

“Mr. Reynolds is Marlborough Public Schools high school wellness,” Turcotte said.

who oppose that decision and who want to let Hudson – which is a pretty purple community – know that there’s people here who disapprove of that move and that we’re not going back,” organizer Ellen Church said of last Friday’s vigil.

The Hudson Democratic Town Committee voted to have a formal presence at the vigil that evening, according to Church who chairs the committee.

Sharp said she decided to come to the vigil because of “everything.”

She specifically noted Justice Clarence Thomas’ concurring opinion that the court should also reconsider a trio of cases involving contraceptives and same sex marriage.

“I want the government’s hands off my uterus, and I want the litigation out of my orientation,” Sharp said.

Turcotte asked the district to acknowledge Reynolds in the fall with a small ceremony and a plaque at the newly christened adventure course.

The School Committee was supportive of the idea. But members were initially unsure whether they had the authority to name the adventure course.

Superintendent Michael Bergeron said that naming buildings is a function of the City Council.

“But, nobody said anything about an adventure course,” said School Committee member Katherine Hennessy.

The committee then did vote to rename the course.

Reynolds still lives in Marlborough.

He graduated from MHS in 1964 before the Philadelphia Phillies drafted him two years

later in the fourth round.

A left-handed pitcher, Reynolds played for the Phillies, the Milwaukee Brewers, the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres.

Turcotte said that the school’s new adventure course is state of the art, adding that “most schools would be dying to have [it].”

The course at MHS was built in two phases, with work wrapping up around Thanksgiving of last year.

Speaking to the Community Advocate, Physical Education teacher Kevin Cormier said that the old course had to be taken down because it was on the site of the new Goodnow Brothers Elementary School.

Cormier said that MHS has had a project adventure class for more than two decades.

The service is run through the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (MWRTA), mirroring similar Catch Connect programs in Wellesley, Framingham and Natick. It then links into the MWRTA’s core fixed-route bus network in Marlborough.

MWRTA has continued to grow in step with meteoric development of Hudson’s cultural and business stock.

That is a win for local leaders involved in recent work around the business community.

For legislators, meanwhile, the ability to bring ARPA money into town for public transit purposes was a win for collaboration.

“Hudson is really smart and Hudson town hall and Hudson planners and Hudson town managers all know that as we grow, we need to grow public transportation as well,” Hogan said.

“Tireless advocacy in earmarking this funding is why we’re here this morning,” Trahan said, crediting Hogan and her Hudson municipal counterparts with securing money within broader ARPA allocations.

Introducing Main Street Video Connect!

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter NORTHBOROUGH - Families and community members filled Northborough’s Ellsworth McAfee Park to play on bounce houses and learn more about town departments last week.

This marked the official launch of a new town initiative called Be Well Northborough.

“If you think of small town America, this is exactly what I’m thinking of,” Recreation Director Allie Lane said of the event. “It’s a way [for the departments] to communicate and educate and get kids and families out and introduce ourselves and let them have a good time.”

Program draws on ARPA funding This initiative was introduced to the Northborough Board of Selectmen earlier this year.

A few months later, the selectmen voted to allocate $100,000 of the town’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to the program, which seeks to streamline communication and programming between town officials and departments.

Health Agent Kristin Black described the effort as an interdepartmental project aimed at helping the community recover from COVID-19.

Black and Lane are two of the town officials who are members of the Be Well Northborough Working Group.

The group also includes personnel from the police and fire departments, Northborough Family and Youth Services, the senior center, the Council on Aging, the Northborough Free Library and the school departments as well as Assistant Town

Administrator Becca Meekins.

Key facets of the group’s work include connecting community members to mental health and recovery resources — such as substance use prevention — and examining opportunities to socialize and form connections. “‘Become active in your community again’ is really the goal of the program,” Black said.

Working group collaborates Black said the working group has been frequently meeting and discussing different initiatives that the departments are working on. Discussions also consider ways to put work under one umbrella.

As an example of this, Black noted that the health department, schools, Senior Center and Family and Youth Services all provide mental health resources.

“But we’ve never all really sat in the same room together, saying, ‘How can we do this holistically and really make sure we’re being efficient with our resources and supporting one another and complementing our efforts,’” Black said.

With some of the members of the Be Well Working Group having kids in school, they noted that kids are struggling and wondered whether the children would be able to participate in a fun event marking the start of summer.

That’s where last week’s kick off event came in.

“That was the idea of having this event where everybody was welcome. They’re going to run into their friends. No one was left out,” Black said.

Plus, Black said, it might introduce attendees to new activities in town.

Health Agent notes opportunity to reconnect Other town departments and local organizations had booths and activities during last Wednesday’s event.

The fire department had CPR training mannequins.

The recreation department passed out bags of popcorn.

And Wegmans sponsored the event, providing fresh fruit and healthy snacks.

“I’m excited to see families and let people reconnect with neighbors in ways that we haven’t had opportunities [to do] in the last couple of years,” Black said.

‘We’re trying to think creatively’ In the meantime, Be Well Northborough has a calendar filled with other activities.

These include hikes led by Ken Bennet and Forest Lyford.

Jean Rogers has been holding outdoor yoga sessions at Ellsworth McAfee Park.

At the Senior Center, there’s a class scheduled that will teach self-help techniques called Mindful Living During Uncertain Times.

Black said the town is hoping to stretch ARPA funds, expanding existing programs or offering free programs. She said Be Well is hoping to bring in licensed clinicians to run support groups for different age groups.

“We’re trying to think creatively and outside of the box and really engage with all residents — new to town, forever in town — and realizing that so many of our departments have so much to offer,” Black said.

Avidia Bank president and CEO Mark O’Connell to retire in 2023 Mark O’Connell’s 35-year career with the Hudson Savings Bank and Avidia Bank dates back to 1988.

REGION - The Board of Directors of Avidia Bank announced on Monday that President and CEO Mark O’Connell will retire in May of next year, capping a 35-year career with the bank.

O’Connell, a Certified Public Accountant, joined what was then called Hudson Savings Bank in 1988 as controller, eventually becoming Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer. He has served as President and CEO since 2004.

“I’m really proud of what we’ve all been able to accomplish at Avidia over the years,” O’Connell said as part of the board’s announcement. “It’s not just in our growth, but how we’ve been able to continue to be good citizens to help all members of our communities.”

In 2007, he oversaw the merger of Hudson Savings Bank and Westborough Savings Bank to create Avidia Bank.

Avidia has grown under

United Way of Tri-County and the Boys & Girls Club of Metrowest.

He also helped create the Avidia Bank Charitable Foundation, which has provided more than $4.5 million in donations since its inception in 1997.

The board has since begun an extensive search for O’Connell’s successor as his

retirement nears.

“The Board is so grateful for Mark’s leadership, vision, and commitment over the years, which has made Avidia the strong financial institution we are today,” the board wrote in its announcement.

“We look forward to building on the foundation of success he helped build.”

O’Connell’s leadership, expanding from a $120 million bank with two branches to a $2.3-billion full-service financial institution with nine branches.

A graduate of Salem State University, O’Connell serves as the vice chairman and soonto-be Chairman of the Massachusetts Bankers Association.

He is a board member of the Depositors Insurance Fund and past Chairman of the

Westborough Women’s Club awards scholarships WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough Women’s Club “recently awarded four graduating Westborough High School students with a quartet of $1,500 scholarships this year.

Sasha Wilkinson, Rita Parikh, Isabelle Gu and Jillian Bolster each won scholarships.

Wilkinson will attend the University of British Columbia while Parikh will attend Boston University. Gu will attend the University of Pennsylvania and

Bolster will attend Worcester State University.

“We congratulate these young women and wish them the very best as they begin their college careers,” the Women’s Club wrote in a press release.

By Stuart Foster Reporter HUDSON – Mulready Elementary School physical education teacher Dan Fahey began adding curriculum from the state Safe Routes to School program to his second grade classes about five years ago after he attended a training session.

This year, he created a pedestrian safety video for students, which helped the school win recognition as an exemplary program from Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT).

“It’s a huge honor,” Fahey said. “It’s a huge honor for our school and for the town of Hudson.”

The award was presented by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation early last month.

Those take place in October, February and May. Between 100 to 150 students, families and staff generally participate in each event.

Fahey said he had the idea to separately create a safety video based on the Safe Routes to School’s curriculum. So, he reached out to the Hudson Police Department and the town’s HUDTV cable access station for help.

The resulting video goes over the importance of brightcolored clothes for pedestrians.

It advises pedestrians to stay in groups, noting good places to walk on the sidewalk and informing adults when walking outside.

“He took the reins on this one and he created a short video that showcased Mulready students practicing sidewalk safety, crosswalk safety and parking lot safety,” O’Donnell

“We came in and we weren’t concerned with the team that we were playing,” Offensive Coordinator Harrison Ingels told the Community Advocate after the win. “We were concerned with our performance last week.”

They then went on to claim a national title in January, continuing a storied history for their franchise.

Come this past month, though, Marlborough came out on the losing side of a rematch against Southern New England,

committing five turnovers in a narrow 14-13 defeat.

Looking to rebound, the Shamrocks came home to face a Brockton squad this past weekend that played much of its game with an empty sideline.

Players slogged through this contest largely without substitutions.

Brockton did not cross midfield on offense until the second quarter.

The game, which was initially delayed, then ended prematurely with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

“The focal point tonight was to just be aggressive and make sure we scored on all of our drives,” Ingels said.

His team did just that, save for a late-game fumble deep in Brockton territory.

Marlborough’s next home game is set for the following week, when the Shamrocks will host the Boston Bandits on July 16.

“We know how much talent we have, so we got to just focus every week on making every rep count and coming out prepared,” Ingels said. “We just got to keep going and it will click.”

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor NORTHBOROUGH/HUDSON The Hudson Post 100 American Legion Baseball team defeated Northborough last Thursday, securing a narrow 2-1 victory on the road and continuing a strong start to the still young 2022 season.

Jason Jakobsons led the way for Hudson, pitching a complete game two-hitter while racking up three hits at the plate.

Brady Stuart snagged two hits of his own in the winning effort.

Northborough initially led in this game, breaking a 0-0 tie only to see Hudson claw its way back.

Stuart drove in the tying run for his squad before Jakobsons helped build a one-run advantage with the go-ahead RBI. The win for Hudson this past week came less than 24 hours after a marathon, 14-inning affair against Milford last Wednesday.

Jackson Sequenzia finally ended that game with a walkoff RBI single.

Hudson followed its Milford and Northborough wins last week with a 13-7 defeat of Main South last Friday.

That had Hudson sitting in third place in the Zone Four division as of Monday morning, trailing only Shrewsbury and

East Side in season win-loss records.

Northborough, meanwhile, bounced back from back-toback losses against Cherry Valley and Hudson last week with a 5-4 victory over Framingham on Sunday.

Northborough was in 10th place in the division as of Monday.

MidWach League announces 2022 spring all-stars

REGION - Several dozen high school student athletes were recently honored when the MidWach League released its list of all-stars for the spring sports season last month.

The league includes Algonquin Regional High School, Shrewsbury High School, Westborough High School, Marlborough High School and Hudson High School, among other schools.

It named all stars in baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls outdoor track, boys and girls tennis, and boys volleyball.

Among the winners, Shrewsbury’s Ben Griffith claimed MVP honors in Division A baseball.

Hudson’s Maddie Kiley was a Division A MVP in softball while Algonquin’s Owen Morse and Shrewsbury’s Brady Soldo shared MVP status in Division A Boys Lacrosse.

Fire Departments warn of battery fires following hotel incident

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor HUDSON - Hudson Fire Department personnel on Sunday echoed warnings from the Westborough Fire Department about the dangers of battery fires.

This followed an incident in Westborough last week where the fire department said a laptop overheated and caught fire.

Sharing their message on social media, the Westborough Fire Department initially posted photos of a burned laptop computer.

The fire department explained that the fire was mitigated by building sprinklers, which prevented further fire spread.

There were no injuries.

“Please be cautious when leaving battery operated items unattended when charging,” the fire department then wrote, though. “An overheated battery can cause it to fail and promote ‘thermal runaway,’ which means it can enter an uncontrollable, self heating condition resulting in fire.”

A battery fire caused some damage in a Westborough hotel room last week, but sprinklers limited more severe spread, according to firefighters.

Gage-Austin C. Styffe, 25 MARLBOROUGH - Gage-Austin C. Styffe, 25 of Marlborough died on Mond a y, J u n e 20, 2022, at South County Hospital, South Kingstown, RI. Gage was born in Framingham, MA, the beloved son of Christopher and Karianne (Moulton) Styffe.

He graduated from Marlborough High School, Class of ’15.

Gage worked as a Commercial Fisherman for 5 years both in Boston and Rhode Island.

Gage had so much love for life and always up for a good adventure right in “the bog” of Marlboro or the wilderness of Alaska. He loved riding motorcycles, dirt bikes, and 4-wheelers. Gage was an avid sports fan always hanging out and watching his favorite New England teams. Gage was very devoted and protective of his loved ones.

But most of all he just enjoyed spending time with his friends, family, girlfriend Madi and Frenchie Chief.

Gage is survived by his parents, Christopher and Karianne Styffe of Marlborough; his sister, AT3, Olyvia Styffe, USN, of VA; his brother, Chase Styffe of Marlborough; Maternal Grandfather, Larry P Moulton Sr. of FL; Paternal Grandmother, Luanne (Hinds) Styffe of Sudbury and many aunts, uncles and cous-

HUDSON - José Antonio Travassos Cabral, 80, of Hudson, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Marlborough Hospital, after a period of declining health.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Maria Fatima (Oliveira) Cabral.

José Antonio was born in Vila Do Porto, Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal on September 12, 1941, a son of the late Antonio Joaquim and Maria Idalina (Travassos) Cabral. He was raised in Santa Maria and after completing his education, he moved to Sao Miguel to work for his late Uncle. He eventually immigrated to Hudson in 1965. In 1966 he returned to Sao Miguel to marry his wife and best friend, Fatima.

Two years later, in 1968, Fatima immigrated to the United States to join José in Hudson where, together, they raised their two children. José spent 22 years as an automotive assembler at the General Motors plant in Framingham before he retired in 1990. He then worked for Device Technology, Inc. in Southborough, as a machine operator, before completely retiring at the age of 73.

José was a longtime member of Saint Michael Parish in Hudson. He was an avid soccer enthusiast and a fierce Sporting Soccer Club fan. He also enjoyed swimming, reading, taking vacations and listening to his Portuguese music. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family and especially enjoyed playing cards together with them.

In addition to his devoted wife Fatima, he is survived by 2 children, (Maria) Clara Swartz and her husband Aaron J. of Grafton, MA and Paul R. Cabral and his wife Jena R. Rotheim of Saratoga Springs, NY; 3 siblings, Natalia Cabral and her husband Humberto of FL, Antoinette Cabral and her husband Antonio of CA, and Lobelia Correia and her husband Miguel of Hudson, MA; 5 grandchildren, Rachel E., Rebecca E., and Sophia R. Swartz, Alexander R. and Samuel R. Cabral and several nieces and a nephew.

Karla W. Thompson, 72 HUDSON - Karla W. Thompson, 72, of Hudson, passed away peacefully at UMass Memorial HospitalMarlborough on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. Born in Brookline, M A , Ka rl a was the daughter of the late Edward T. and Katherine (Waage) Englund.

Upon graduating from Newton North High School in 1967, Karla went on to earn an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lasell Jr. College in 1969. The following year, she married her former husband, the late John H. Thompson.

They eventually settled down in Marlboro where she would dedicate several years as a stayat-home mother to their daughters, Jennifer and Rebecca.

When her children started school, Karla began working in the food service department at Bigelow and Richer Elementary Schools. Later in 1988, she started her career at Marlborough Hospital. For close to 30 years she was a devoted hospital employee, who started in the Union St. Café and retired from the Medical Records department in 2015. Her loving colleagues fondly remember her wit, her positivity, and her caring personality. Karla was always personable; she formed and sustained many life-long friendships, her smile and laugh will be missed by many.

Karla adored her cat, Jake, a loyal companion, who remained by her side for over 16 years. Her pastimes included bowling, calligraphy, and gardening. She loved traveling and enjoyed studying the culture and history behind her new adventures. She was intrigued by lighthouses, hot air balloons, meteorology, and enthusiastically tracked hurricanes. Karla had a natural eye for photography, and she captured many awards for her stunning pictures. She appreciated wildlife and could often be found exploring mother nature, camera in hand, reveling in the tranquility of flora and fauna.

She is survived by her two loving daughters, Jennifer Thompson and her partner Mike Nogueira of Worcester,

MA, and Rebecca Rios and her husband Moises of Granite Shoals, TX, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Moises, Noah, and Timothy.

Gary F. Foti, 76 CANTON, GA - Gary F. Foti, 76, of Canton, GA, formerly of Marlborough, MA, passed away after a battle against Parkinson’s and other health complications on Friday, March 25, 2022, with his daughter, Amie Bennett by his side. Born in Marlborough, he was the son of the late Rocco J. and Dorothy J. (Foley) Foti; younger brother to late Lawrence “Larry” Foti and older brother to late Patricia (Foti) Vasconcelos.

During his childhood, Gary enjoyed visiting the Marlborough Public Library daily, which was just steps away from his home on Witherbee Street. He continued to talk about visiting the library often and enjoyed following the events taking place there over the years. Most recently, he talked about the renovation taking place which he would have loved to see in person.

Gary was a graduate of Marian High School in Framingham, class of 1963. He then went on to nursing school at McLean Hospital in Boston where he met his future wife Cathy (Smith) Belair and made many other lifelong friendships. Gary continued on to anesthesia school and enrolled in the Air Force. Eventually, he moved south to Georgia, following his aunt and uncle Dr. And Mrs. Riccardi and family. It was in the Atlanta area where he began his career as a nurse anesthetist and continued his service in the Air Force Reserves.

Gary found great happiness in making memories with friends and family. He especially loved to visit the beach, watch air shows, be in the know about everybody’s business, see the accomplishments of his two grandsons and travel the world to such places as England, France, Italy, and Mexico.

Gary is survived by his only child and daughter, Amie FotiBennett and her husband Oscar, his two grandsons, Jaeden and Jace Bennett, his aunt, Peggy

Bartolini, his sister-in-law, Sue (Cincotta) Foti, his nieces Jackie Malloy and Laurie Baj and their families, his nephews, Anthony Foti and Chris Foti and their families. He is also survived by his ex-wife and lifelong friend, Cathy (Smith) Belair as well as many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends that he loved, especially his partner, Steve Odom of Atlanta, GA. Marc A. Leandres, 39 HUDSON - Beloved son, brother, friend and cousin, Marc Anthony Leandres, passed away on June 20th 2022 at the tender age of 39 after a sudden heart attack.

He passed p e a ce f ul l y surrounded by his loved ones.

Marc was a serial autodidact when it came to his hobbies and his profession. While he never finished high school he enjoyed pursuing hobbies that required rigor to self teach. Marc enjoyed riding and working on his ATV, playing his guitar, hunting with a bow or rifle and tending to his garden. A longtime resident of Hudson, Massachusetts, Marc was an accomplished laborer and welder for S&F Concrete where he worked for over 20 years.

A proud uncle and godfather, Marc was fond of spending time with his nieces and nephews.

Marc’s dog, Loki, was like his child and could regularly be seen with his head out of the window begging drive-through workers for a slice of cheese.

Marc is survived by his father and step mother, Antonio Leandres and Isabel Maria Rodrigues, his grandparents Jose and Maria Leandres, his siblings Michelle Leandres Freitas, Andrew Leandres, Christopher Leandres and Daniel Leandres, his nieces and nephews AJ Leandres, Alexis Leandres, Braden Freitas, Bronson Leandres and Shane Freitas (godson) and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Marc was predeceased by his mother Isabel Frias Leandres among many other relatives.

Marc’s family extends their gratitude for the outpouring of supportduringthisdifficulttime.

Westborough hosts July 4th kickoff celebration

By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Guests of all ages got a head start in celebrating the July 4th holiday last Friday at the Westborough July 4th Block Party at Bay State Commons.

The block party is now back on schedule after it was canceled in 2020 and pushed to August last summer due to pandemic restrictions.

This year’s event began with patriotic music performed by the Interboro Community Band conducted by Matt Lefebvre. Audience members waved American flags that were distributed free by the Rotary Club of Westborough.

Live musical entertainment continued with classic rock-‘n’roll tunes performed by The Reminisants, a longtime staple of this event.

Westborough’s Simply Windows offers residents a window to the world

By Jeff Theodore Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Kendra Weldon always knew she wanted to enter the interior design industry.

For 15 years, she worked in the furniture and home interior fields in management and sales. Later, she decided to step out on her own, opening Weldon Interiors. After four years, Weldon rebranded her business as Simply Windows.

The business then celebrated last year as it opened its new location on East Main Street in Westborough.

Now, Simply Windows has grown as it continues to thrive.

“I wanted to be good at doing one thing rather than be OK at several things,” Weldon recalled in a recent interview.

“So, I decided to dive into learning about window treatments from back to front in order to know how to do it right.”

Simply Windows expands After an uneven start initially due to the state of the economy, Simply Windows has grown by leaps and bounds, serving between 50 to 80 customers per month.

“It’s more than I envisioned and I’ve learned that as Simply Windows has grown, it’s had to change,” Weldon said.

Business eyes future Weldon, a graduate of the Chamberlayne School of Design, said Simply Windows handles up to four window treatment installations a day, with some projects more detailed than others.

Her advice to potential cus-

tomers, both residential and commercial, is to be wary of certain price points and to ask the right questions.

“Some people go another route and buy the less expensive options online,” she said. “Cheapest isn’t always the best and might be more expensive to replace later.”

As for the future of Simply Windows, Weldon says she’s satisfied with its growth at the moment and has no intentions of expanding anytime soon.

“The window treatment business isn’t easy,” she says.

“We plan to grow step by step. We took a lot of steps last year. I want to get a solid base rather than expand too quickly.”

La Miette La Mai fuses culinary expertise with engaging customer experience

That’s the message of Chef Wachira Sittikong, known as Chef New, who has helped lead a rebranding of Yoong Tong Thai Restaurant as La Miette La Mai Thai Bistro, located at 278 Main Street in Northborough.

From age 12, he worked in his family’s restaurant.

When his family talked about selling the restaurant, though, Chef New decided he had to take over alongside his business partner, Rush Sukto.

Applying lessons learned while studying at Le Cordon Bleu, Chef New developed a concept to refresh the restaurant’s traditions by merging Thai and French cuisines into a more modern, contemporary fusion menu.

Most of the staples are still on the menu, which has been enhanced by Chef New’s creative techniques, pairings, plating, and new chef specialties.

Loving to work off-menu as well, Chef New is always rolling custom-made sushi rolls to order. He has added refreshing Thai-inspired cocktails, each carrying a story of where it came from in Thailand.

Speaking in an interview, Chef New touted a series of new tropical drinks, including Mai High, Thai Rum drink Sabai Sabai, an ocean-hued Blue Pattaya, and the local favorite La Mai Tai. New highlighted Sukto,

guitar duo from Boylston offered an unforgettable blend of jazz and current-day hits.

The music program proceeded with roughly a dozen additional performances by local acts in June alone.

“A lot of people in Northborough have been asking for this,” Chef New said. “La Miette La Mai is a great place
