Northborough man pleads guilty in nonprofit wire fraud, money laundering case

man with an aortic aneurysm, which is a weak spot in the wall of a major blood vessel that can be fatal if it ruptures, is told that nothing can be done to help and that he should get his affairs in order. Then he learns about a procedure at UMass Memorial Health called FEVAR that could save his life.

A worried patient has a biopsy on a suspicious spot on her lung. While she is still asleep from the anesthetic, the biopsy is reviewed by a cytopathologist who determines the spot is cancer, so the surgeon immediately removes it. And a process of treating lung cancer that normally takes months is performed in a couple of hours.

Another patient needs hospital-quality care. But in this case, her home becomes a hospital, outfitted with monitors and medical equipment. Daily visits from the hospital staff make it possible for the entire “hospital stay” to occur in the comfort of her own bed and surroundings.

SHREWSBURY - A recently acquired scrapbook provides a look back into the life and times of a (then) teen-aged young lady from Milford during the late 1950s.

After reviewing the scrapbook, it becomes apparent that she, like many other teens back then, was very taken up with Elvis Presley, who was wildly popular during those years.

There are several clippings regarding Elvis and his songs and appearances, including a photograph of him in one of his signature outfits. The photograph has his signature on it, but chances are it was not original.

Another item, with a more local connection, is the ticket stub shown in our photograph — it is from the Edgemere Drive-In. The note in the scrapbook tells us: “Went to the Edgemere Drive-In to see Elvis!” This was followed by a menu from the iconic El Morocco Restaurant in Worcester, which had a note next to it: “We went to see Elvis Presley at the Edgemere Drive-In in Worcester (really Shrewsbury) with Johnny and Joanne. After we went to the El Morocco.”

Today, the drive-in is long gone — a retail/apartment complex which includes a Market Basket store will soon be opening on the Route 20 site where it once stood.

The difference in flavor may be the result of Canadian regulations that do not restrict the mash bill, allowing distilleries to create their own unique recipes using different proportions of rye, corn, and malted barley. Regulations also permit other alcoholic beverages, such as aged wine or sherry, to be added to the final product. Distillation takes place in large column stills, and spirits must be aged in new wood for a minimum of three years before being bottled. Most whiskies are blends that are 40% ABV (alcohol by volume). Hudson celebrates Juneteenth Dear Editor: On Monday June 20 Hudson’s second annual Juneteenth was a very successful event and enjoyed by a large number of residents and town guests! Coordinated by Mercedes Murphy, The Phoenix Fund Collaborative, Students Against Ra c i s m , a Hudson High school student led club and advisor Caitlyn Bradford, the Hudson Anti-Racism Group, Jeannie Vineyard, Bria Milbery, Maggie Crowley and Abby Morgan.

The event started at Wood Park with speeches by the students followed by a walk to Town Hall. At Town Hall the event was begun by a beautiful land acknowledgment by Anna-Celestrya Carr, artist and filmmaker. Two students shared poetry and a speech highlighting their

holiday and the need for more financial equity for people of color. He cited a Boston study illuminating the financial inequity between black and white families and the need to invest in more equitable solutions for economic equity in our state.

Southborough Select Board opts for internal search for new police chief

By Stuart Foster Reporter SOUTHBOROUGH - Southborough will look to its existing police roster as it continues a search for a new police chief following a decision by the Select Board on June 14.

Foregoing a broader search open to applicants from outside of Southborough, the town is moving forward just a matter of weeks after the departure of former chief Kenneth Paulhus, who was previously placed on leave earlier this year.

An internal search, Select Board member Lisa Braccio said prior to the board’s decision, would let the department “heal.”

Select Board members discuss options Speaking on June 14, Select Board member Chelsea Malinowski said both internal and external searches had advantages and disadvantages. She continued, however, saying that the level of experience in the Southborough Police Department would likely generate interest to fill the position internally.

Braccio strongly supported an internal search, saying that there are candidates in the police department who understand Southborough and the department.

“I personally think we have what we’re looking for from within the department,” Braccio said.

Braccio noted that the department has been through a lot, saying that she thinks there is support from within the department for an internal search.

Newell serving as acting chief Paulhus had been on leave since March.

Earlier this past month, Paulhus and the town then announced that his employment wouldn’t continue beyond the end of May. Town officials have neither shared information on why Paulhus was initially put on leave nor why he then left the department.

Ryan Newell has been serving as the town’s acting police chief in the meantime.

The topic of Paulhus’ employment with the town, likewise, came up at Town Meeting earlier this year when mul-

tiple voters voiced concerns about Paulhus’ extended yet unexplained absence.

Town previously conducted external searches While Southborough is now eyeing an internal search, it has looked outside of its borders before, most recently selecting Paulhus from his previous

position as a captain with the Woonsocket, Rhode Island Police Department.

Select Board member Sam Stivers said that, previously, the town had made correct decisions by doing external searches for police and fire chiefs. However, this time, he said he thought that maintaining continuity and preventing

disruption were compelling reasons for an internal search.

Select Board member Andrew Dennington also supported an internal search. Dennington said that the position had been vacant for such a long time that the faster timeline of an internal search was more appropriate.

“This position has really

not been filled since February,” Dennington said. “It’s now June and that’s a factor for me weighing against the external posting.”

Letters of interest and resumes for the position were due on June 27. The Select Board was set to then discuss next steps during a meeting on June 28.

The waiver proposal asked the town to not request, require or condition any further improvements to the road as long as total square footage of the Westborough Office Park, which springs up around West Park Drive, remains under the Massachusetts Environmental Protection Agency (MEPA) approved capacity of about 1,730,000 square feet.

Planning Board Chair Mark Silverberg said that he couldn’t support the language in the waiver – a concern echoed by other members.

“I don’t think we have the authority as a board to govern future decisions by other boards,” Silverberg said.

Letter to Planning Board Before the Planning Board approved the modified plans, members were able to ask questions about the conditions and waivers for their approval.

The waiver proposed by Carruth was one of 10 discussed for this project. As Robbins explained to the Planning Board, this waiver would have given Carruth blanket permission to not comply with future road standards shown on the original plans.

Carruth’s Chief Investment Officer Marc Verreault later told the Select Board that there were concerns about the future of the road and possible impact to the company if there were any changes to the businesses.

After the waiver’s denial, Carruth asked the Select Board to sign a letter recommending to the Planning Board that, as long as it’s under permitted square footage, Carruth would be able to use the existing road.

“We’re paying the mitigation forward, and we’re asking the town boards to give us some non-binding consideration some time in the future when we do build out the lots that are currently available and not built out,” Verreault said.

The Select Board approved this letter.

In early 2021, the town learned that it would indeed receive a $1.28 million grant from the state MassWorks Infrastructure Program to fund

the public portion of this project.

That year the Planning Board also approved subdivision plans that would have extended the roadway from the driveway of 2200 West Park Drive down to Flanders Road.

As Town Planner Jim Robbins explained it to the Select Board a week after the Planning Board’s approval, on June 14, there would be a new intersection of West Park Drive and Flanders Road with a traffic signal.

“In saving the construction of that 700 feet, it saves Carruth significant money, and it doesn’t harm either the bike trail or West Park Drive,” Robbins said. “It still provides safe passage for both vehicles and for the bike path.”

“Construction prices have increased to the point that when we bid the public work – the MassWorks work – it came in higher than the total grant amount,” Robbins said, however.

With the help of Carruth, Robbins said they approached MassWorks staff to get an extension and budget increase, which was successful and added an additional $365,000.

Town Manager Kristi Williams said this would cover the cost of construction and allow for some contingency funds. “[We] got the increase because it’s not just Westborough this is happening in,” Robbins said. “This is happening to all the MassWorks projects right now.”

As the town made these adjustments, Carruth then approached the Planning Board about modifying its plans.

Originally, the driveway of 2200 West Park Drive would have been eliminated and become part of a brand new road.

As Robbins explained it, the existing road will now serve as the first 700 feet of the West

Northborough man pleads guilty in nonprofit wire fraud, money laundering case Wire fraud | from page 1

He began working in that position in 2015.

That, prosecutors said, gave him access to company credit cards, which he used to make purchases from fake vendor accounts that he controlled on Square and Amazon.

Prosecutors said Kapiris “fabricated sales invoices…to conceal the scheme.”

They added that Kapiris later “used stolen funds for personal expenses,” including $19,250 sent to a home contractor.

In a statement last Thursday, Venture Community Services President and CEO Mike Hyland said the organization fired Kapiris in May of 2020 after “an internal investigation revealed financial crimes.”

“The agency promptly reported these crimes to local law enforcement, and cooperated fully with the investiga-

tion,” Hyland continued in his statement. “None of the people supported by Venture were affected by the crimes.”

Once notified, Sturbridge Police, in turn, reached out to the FBI’s Worcester office, according to a police statement in October.

Northborough Police also aided in the investigation.

Kapiris specifically pleaded

guilty last week to two counts of wire fraud and one count of money laundering, according to prosecutors.

In total, prosecutors said he stole $366,477.

Charges of wire fraud could carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, while the money laundering charge could carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Sentences could also include supervised release and fines.

Kapiris is due to be sentenced on Oct. 14, according to prosecutors.

Hyland said Venture conducted a criminal background check on Kapiris prior to his hire and had “rigorous internal controls in place that are reviewed annually by an

independent auditor.”

“Venture is grateful for the efforts of the Sturbridge Police Department, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts in bringing Kapiris to justice,” Hyland continued in his statement.

An attorney for Kapiris declined to comment on this topic when contacted by the Community Advocate.

State mattress waste ban will end Shrewsbury mattress disposal program

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter SHREWSBURY - Starting Nov. 1, Shrewsbury residents will no longer be able to have their mattresses collected through curbside collection.

Town Manager Kevin Mizikar addressed this during the Board of Selectmen meeting on June 14, noting that the state had issued a broad mattress disposal ban.

All mattresses will need to be fully recycled, he said, rather than simply being thrown away. This effectively ends a town program that helped dispose of old mattresses.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) website on waste disposal bans, DEP issued its final 2030 Solid Waste Master Plan in October of last year.

Mattresses were added to

the waste disposal bans as part of its objectives to reduce disposal statewide by 30% over the next decade. The ban also impacts textiles.

This mattress and textile ban goes into effect at the beginning of November of this year.

According to a FAQ, the ban on mattresses doesn’t include items like mattress pads, mattress toppers, sleeping bags, pillows and mattresses in futons and sofa beds.

“We do know that it is one of the most popular bulky waste items that gets placed at the curb,” Mizikar said of this ban’s local impacts on mattress collection.

He estimated that there were nearly 700 mattresses collected in Shrewsbury over the past year.

Mizikar said Shrewsbury is exploring other opportunities to provide mattress disposal services to residents.

Co-response mental health clinician joins Shrewsbury Police Department

Police note spike in mental health calls Seeing the uptick in mental health calls, the department sought out a person to help provide a higher level of service to residents in a crisis.

SHREWSBURY - The Shrewsbury Police Department responded to nearly 1,000 mental health calls between 2017 to 2021.

That marks a 38% increase from the previous five year period, according to Chief Kevin Anderson.

Enter Jessica Atwood, who is the department’s new jail diversion program co-response clinician.

“While our officers are excellent at what they do, we have to realize that they are police officers and not licensed mental health professionals with a formal education in the mental health field,” Anderson said in a recent press release.

Atwood, who started her role in April, told the Community Advocate last week that working with the Shrewsbury Police Department has been going “wonderful” so far.

“Everyone has been so welcoming,” she said. “It’s [a] change for everybody because this is a whole new position.”

“In a short period of time, from emergencies to follow ups, she’s been a tremendous asset,” Anderson said. “She built a really good relationship with the community.”

Atwood grew up near Lowell and Chelmsford, though she’s lived in Worcester County for the past six years.

She’s spent about 12 years in her current profession, working for the Framingham-based human services agency Advocates since 2016.

“I’ve always had an interest in psychology and criminal justice,” Atwood said.

Her first job in the field involved working as a mental health technician at Lowell General Hospital’s emergency room.

While she was working at the hospital, Atwood met clinicians who would evaluate patients in the emergency department.

“I asked a clinician once, ‘How do I get your job?’” Atwood recalled.

That question led her to go back to graduate school before ultimately interning and later being hired by Advocates.

with skills like Atwood’s dates back to his interview to be chief.

Anderson put a one year strategic plan together, which included evaluating the department’s responses for mental health and individuals in crisis.

Anderson wanted to look at training that focused on the department’s responses and its ability to identify people in crisis.

He was also interested in exploring whether the department should have a crisis intervention team and hire a mental health clinician.

Once he was formally hired as chief, Anderson indeed began closely reviewing the department.

“One of the things we determined was there was a need for a mental health clinician,” he said.

The police department received approval for funds for this position as part of the Fiscal Year 2022 budget.

Lt. Nick Perna then worked with Advocates, though, to secure an approximately $300,000 grant through the state Department of Mental Health.

The grant is good for three years, supporting Atwood’s position for that period. It also leaves a possibility that it could be renewed after that period.

Other communities bring in clinicians In launching their co-response program, Shrewsbury will join other communities that have also worked with Advocates on similar efforts.

Such area communities include Hudson, Marlborough, Northborough, Southborough and Westborough.

Clinician begins work in Shrewsbury Back in Shrewsbury, Atwood began working with the Shrewsbury Police Department in April after six weeks of training.

As part of her work, she coresponds with police officers to calls ranging from individuals in psychiatric crisis to domestic assaults to elder services cases. “[I] assess them, help deescalate the situation and get them the appropriate resources and treatment that they may need,” Atwood said.

She said this helps avoid “unnecessary” emergency room visits.

Shrewsbury officers have said that Atwood is a great asset to the department, Anderson said.

One of the department’s goals, likewise, is to redirect people with mental illness and substance use disorder to the healthcare system opposed to the judicial system.

Over the past year, all of Shrewsbury’s officers have completed several mental health trainings. Some have also been sent to crisis intervention training.

“At the end of the day, it’s the best outcome for the person involved,” Anderson said. “Having Jess on scene, she can know the cues to identify somebody with emotional problems or mental health issues and get them the appropriate services that they need.”

Plans for 2022 Westborough winter light display moves forward

WESTBOROUGH - Although summer is in full swing, it’s never too early to begin thinking about the holiday season.

As such, the Select Board Westborough Select Board last month approved a plan for this year’s Winter Lights display.

“I’m fully supportive of this,” said Select Board member Shelby Marshall during the board’s June 14 meeting. “I think it’s been well-received. It gives a pop and warmth to our downtown that our community appreciates and wants.”

Rotary Club leaders previously appeared before the Select Board last year to discuss their plans to revamp their annual holiday light display.

As Rotarian Jim O’Connor told the Select Board last month, phase one of their plans involved decorating every decorative pole in the downtown area — a total of 24 — with a garland, festive

The Westborough Rotary’s prominent fir tree was also decorated with over 400 multicolored bulbs. Trunks of the three deciduous trees also standing in the rotary were additionally wrapped in lights.

“I think that gives a classic look to the holiday season,” O’Connor said.

While last year’s display was a success, according to O’Connor, planned floodlights did not work was planned.

In working with their supplier, O’Connor said they took down the floodlights, which may now be used on another project, he added.

O’Connor said the club plans

to add warm white lights to tree branches as part of the 2022 display.

The Rotary Club also wants to decorate 16 more poles.

“We think it’s going to be a spectacular change,” O’Connor said of the tree lights.

The Select Board unanimously approved the winter lights agreement with the Rotary Club.

The winter lights will be on display from Nov. 15 through Feb. 15.

The club will begin its fundraising campaign for the winter lights shortly.

WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough Fire Department warned community members on Sunday against the dangers of battery fires following an incident in a local hotel room last week.

Sharing their message on social media, the fire department posted photos of a burned laptop computer.

The fire department explained that the fire was mitigated by building sprinklers, which prevented further fire spread.

There were no injuries.

“Please be cautious when leaving battery operated items unattended when charging,” the fire department wrote. “An overheated battery can cause it to fail and promote ‘thermal runaway,’ which means it can enter an uncontrollable, self heating, condition resulting in fire.”

A battery fire burned part of a Westborough hotel room last week.

A federal study in 2018 previously identified roughly 25,000 “incidents of overheating or fire hazards” across the country related to batteries in consumer products over a five-year span between 2012 and 2017.

Hudson fire personnel seperatly joined in this warning on Sunday, sharing the Westborough Fire Department’s initial post.

“Don’t become complacent when it comes to charging electronics and always keep in mind the surface on which you leave a charging device,” the Hudson Firefighters Local 1713 union wrote on its Facebook page.

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter NORTHBOROUGH - Families and community members filled Northborough’s Ellsworth McAfee Park to play on bounce houses and learn more about town departments last week.

This marked the official launch of a new town initiative called Be Well Northborough.

“If you think of small town America, this is exactly what I’m thinking of,” Recreation Director Allie Lane said of the event. “It’s a way [for the departments] to communicate and educate and get kids and families out and introduce ourselves and let them have a good time.”

Program draws on ARPA funding This initiative was introduced to the Northborough Board of Selectmen earlier this year.

A few months later, the selectmen voted to allocate $100,000 of the town’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to the program, which seeks to streamline communication and programming between town officials and departments.

Health Agent Kristin Black described the effort as an interdepartmental project aimed at helping the community recover from COVID-19.

Black and Lane are two of the town officials who are members of the Be Well Northborough Working Group.

The group also includes personnel from the police and fire departments, Northborough Family and Youth Services, the senior center, the Council on Aging, the Northborough Free Library and the school departments as well as Assistant Town

Administrator Becca Meekins.

Key facets of the group’s work include connecting community members to mental health and recovery resources — such as substance use prevention — and examining opportunities to socialize and form connections. “‘Become active in your community again’ is really the goal of the program,” Black said.

Working group collaborates Black said the working group has been frequently meeting and discussing different initiatives that the departments are working on. Discussions also consider ways to put work under one umbrella.

As an example of this, Black noted that the health department, schools, Senior Center and Family and Youth Services all provide mental health resources.

“But we’ve never all really sat in the same room together, saying, ‘How can we do this holistically and really make sure we’re being efficient with our resources and supporting one another and complementing our efforts,’” Black said.

With some of the members of the Be Well Working Group having kids in school, they noted that kids are struggling and wondered whether the children would be able to participate in a fun event marking the start of summer.

That’s where last week’s kick off event came in.

“That was the idea of having this event where everybody was welcome. They’re going to run into their friends. No one was left out,” Black said.

Plus, Black said, it might introduce attendees to new activities in town.

Health Agent notes opportunity to reconnect Other town departments and local organizations had booths and activities during last Wednesday’s event.

The fire department had CPR training mannequins.

The recreation department passed out bags of popcorn.

And Wegmans sponsored the event, providing fresh fruit and healthy snacks.

“I’m excited to see families and let people reconnect with neighbors in ways that we haven’t had opportunities [to do] in the last couple of years,” Black said.

‘We’re trying to think creatively’ In the meantime, Be Well Northborough has a calendar filled with other activities.

These include hikes led by Ken Bennet and Forest Lyford.

Jean Rogers has been holding outdoor yoga sessions at Ellsworth McAfee Park.

At the Senior Center, there’s a class scheduled that will teach self-help techniques called Mindful Living During Uncertain Times.

Black said the town is hoping to stretch ARPA funds, expanding existing programs or offering free programs. She said Be Well is hoping to bring in licensed clinicians to run support groups for different age groups.

“We’re trying to think creatively and outside of the box and really engage with all residents — new to town, forever in town — and realizing that so many of our departments have so much to offer,” Black said.

Avidia Bank president and CEO Mark O’Connell to retire in 2023 Mark O’Connell’s 35-year career with the Hudson Savings Bank and Avidia Bank dates back to 1988.

REGION - The Board of Directors of Avidia Bank announced on Monday that President and CEO Mark O’Connell will retire in May of next year, capping a 35-year career with the bank.

O’Connell, a Certified Public Accountant, joined what was then called Hudson Savings Bank in 1988 as controller, eventually becoming Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer. He has served as President and CEO since 2004.

“I’m really proud of what we’ve all been able to accomplish at Avidia over the years,” O’Connell said as part of the board’s announcement. “It’s not just in our growth, but how we’ve been able to continue to be good citizens to help all members of our communities.”

In 2007, he oversaw the merger of Hudson Savings Bank and Westborough Savings Bank to create Avidia Bank.

Avidia has grown under

United Way of Tri-County and the Boys & Girls Club of Metrowest.

He also helped create the Avidia Bank Charitable Foundation, which has provided more than $4.5 million in donations since its inception in 1997.

The board has since begun an extensive search for O’Connell’s successor as his

retirement nears.

“The Board is so grateful for Mark’s leadership, vision, and commitment over the years, which has made Avidia the strong financial institution we are today,” the board wrote in its announcement.

Shrewsbury selectmen weigh phase two of ARPA funds

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter SHREWSBURY - From funding for food insecurity to new ways to communicate, the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen got a first look at a new set of proposed projects using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds during its June 14 meeting.

“There are some really good pieces on here that could have a direct impact on people’s lives. I think it’s a good use of the funding,” said Selectman Michelle Conlin.

Allocations so far The town is expected to receive $11.5 million in federal ARPA funds.

So far, the Board of Selectmen has committed about $3.9 million of those dollars to various projects.

That list, among other things, included a total of roughly $1.4 million in public health requests, which, in turn, included a four-year commitment to increase the capacity at Shrews-

bury Youth and Family Services to overcome an increase in mental health challenges and requests for services.

That investment aims to help the organization hire three additional mental health clinicians.

Outside of Youth and Family Services, funds were also used for HVAC upgrades at Paton Elementary School, Oak Middle School and at the Shrewsbury Town Hall.

Selectmen allocated another $497,045 to address negative economic impacts of the pandemic — supporting programs like a small business COVID-19 recovery grant initiative.

Roughly $1.6 million then went toward replacing a water main on Clinton Street in town.

Pandemic reserve According to Town Manager Kevin Mizikar, Shrewsbury has about $1.9 million still unencumbered from the first tranche of ARPA funds.

Of that, he recommended last month that the town maintain a pandemic reserve of about

$800,000 in case of future COVID-19 surges.

Next steps in the rollout of ARPA money are additionally unclear, Mizikar said, asking selectmen to keep in mind that these may be the only COVID-19 related funds that the town will receive.

Shrewsbury isn’t certain when it will receive its second round of funds, though Mizikar noted it may come mid-August if it’s consistent with last year’s distribution.

Simultaneously though, Mizikar said, there are conversations at the federal level among some in Congress who are disappointed about the percentage of ARPA funds still unspent.

“They haven’t even given us all the money yet,” Mizikar said. Mizikar urged caution on how the town proceeds. As Mizikar noted these concerns, neighboring communities are similarly grappling with ARPA uncertainties.

Proposed phase two projects Back in Shrewsbury, the Board of Selectmen held a workshop meeting a couple of weeks ago to discuss local ARPA plans.

Mizikar reported that they were “building consensus” about the release of about $750,000 for projects and programs that directly benefit residents.

After that meeting, Mizikar went to staff, who provided 23 requests for ARPA funding totaling about $2.4 million.

Mizikar said he highlighted a total of six projects that he felt met the selectmen’s criteria.

“I think we’ve heard pretty loud and clear that people need more distilled information,” Flynn said.

Additionally, the town is hoping to build on a $75,000 earmark Shrewsbury received as part of a state spending bill last year to expand food pantry services.

“This would allow for the prolonging and the additional acquisition of both materials, space and equipment to further reduce food insecurity within the community,” Mizikar said.

featured older players who have been playing since the beginning.

Camden Chenevert initially played on Collins’ tee ball coach pitch team in Shrewsbury Little League.

“I convinced his mom and dad to let him play on my team,” Collins recalled. “We let him come up, hit off the tee, do the buddy thing and run around the bases.”

Chenevert played on the team for a couple more years until the little league turned into what Collins described as a little more competitive baseball.

“When he aged out, we couldn’t figure out how to make baseball fun for him while still being able to be safe,” Camden’s mother, Lauren, said.

So, Challenger was started in Shrewsbury.

Lauren wanted to include their friends from school.

to bring everybody in the community together,” she said.

The community in Shrewsbury Little League was “amazing” because the kids supported Camden, Lauren said.

“We wanted everybody to feel that kind of love in the community,” she said.

How Challenger works In the Challenger program, players are matched with a

volunteer buddy.

The buddies are usually a middle or high school student who is there to help the players.

That can involve helping guide players as they run the bases. As Collins described it, a lot of the work of a buddy involves socialization.

For buddies, the commitment is an important one. Last week, middle school aged buddies gathered for their Challenger game immediately after games and practices.

“They’re invested into it just as much as the coaches are,” Collins said.

As Collins was looking to start the Challenger League in Shrewsbury, so was Northborough.

Coach Jim Furlong said Northborough had 12 players in their first year.

Now, the Northborough and Shrewsbury teams play against other groups in Westborough and Grafton on Saturdays.

Between the four towns,

Collins estimated that there are about 100 players who play throughout the season.

“I love the looks on the kids’ faces,” Furlong said. “I love the intensity. They’re all ball players, and they’re here to play.

“I love to watch it,” he continued. “I love when there’s a play made.”

Ryan Summers, who played for the Northborough team, has been playing for eight years.

“If you want to play baseball and you’re disabled, you can come play here,” Ryan said with the help of his sister. “It’s welcome to everybody.”

As the players came to bat, Furlong introduced them with nicknames like “Superman.”

Jayden Baez’s nickname is “Muscles.”

As his mom, Randi, explained it, one of the other coaches started using the “muscles” nickname, though it’s been interchangeable with “noodles.”

“He’s got the skinniest arms,” she said.

She continued, “But he just loves the muscles that he thinks he has. So, you say that and he gets so excited.”

It lights a fire under him, Randi said.

“I don’t think they get the typical opportunities that a lot of kids get — being under the lights at Shrewsbury High School or Algonquin or Grafton High School to play a game — and they hear their names called over the intercom,” Lauren said. “I think that’s something special for every kid.”

The players feel like this is their time and stage, which is important for any athlete to feel, she added.

While celebrating a milestone last week, Challenger organizers emphasize that this certainly will not be the last time local Challenger teams hold a night game under the lights.

“We’ll definitely do this every year for sure,” Furlong said.

“It was magical.”

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor NORTHBOROUGH/HUDSON The Hudson Post 100 American Legion Baseball team defeated Northborough last Thursday, securing a narrow 2-1 victory on the road and continuing a strong start to the still young 2022 season.

Jason Jakobsons led the way for Hudson, pitching a complete game two-hitter while racking up three hits at the plate.

Brady Stuart snagged two hits of his own in the winning effort.

Northborough initially led in this game, breaking a 0-0 tie only to see Hudson claw its way back.

Stuart drove in the tying run for his squad before Jakobsons helped build a one-run advantage with the go-ahead RBI. The win for Hudson this past week came less than 24 hours after a marathon, 14-inning affair against Milford last Wednesday.

Jackson Sequenzia finally ended that game with a walkoff RBI single.

Hudson followed its Milford and Northborough wins last week with a 13-7 defeat of Main South last Friday.

That had Hudson sitting in third place in the Zone Four division as of Monday morning, trailing only Shrewsbury and

East Side in season win-loss records.

Northborough, meanwhile, bounced back from back-toback losses against Cherry Valley and Hudson last week with a 5-4 victory over Framingham on Sunday.

Northborough was in 10th place in the division as of Monday.

MidWach League announces 2022 spring all-stars

REGION - Several dozen high school student athletes were recently honored when the MidWach League released its list of all-stars for the spring sports season last month.

The league includes Algonquin Regional High School, Shrewsbury High School, Westborough High School, Marlborough High School and Hudson High School, among other schools.

It named all stars in baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls outdoor track, boys and girls tennis, and boys volleyball.

Among the winners, Shrewsbury’s Ben Griffith claimed MVP honors in Division A baseball.

Hudson’s Maddie Kiley was a Division A MVP in softball while Algonquin’s Owen Morse and Shrewsbury’s Brady Soldo shared MVP status in Division A Boys Lacrosse.

Bertha A. DiPierro, 97 SHREWSBURY/WORCESTER - Bertha S. (Sigel) DiPierro, 97, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2022. Her husband, Matthew, of 71 years predeceased her in 2014. Bertha was born in Worcester on August 5, 1924, daughter of the late Stacia (Dabrowska) and Joseph Sigel.

Mrs. DiPierro leaves many behind that love and will miss her deeply including her two daughters, Donna Gingras and her husband, John S., of West Boylston, Sandra Smith and her husband, Thomas A., of Shrewsbury; four grandchildren, Tanya Sparhawk and her husband, Michael, Thomas Smith and his wife, Tammy, Joseph Gingras and his wife, Erin, Johnna Cox and her husband, Wardell; 7 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph, Edward and Ziggy Sigel; sisters, Helen Edukajtis and Jenny Zona.

Gage-Austin C. Styffe, 25 MARLBOROUGH - Gage-Austin C. Styffe, 25 of Marlborough died on Mond a y, J u n e 2 0, 2 0 2 2 , at South County Hospital, South Kingstown, RI. Gage was born in Framingham, MA, the beloved son of Christopher and Karianne (Moulton) Styffe.

He graduated from Marlborough High School, Class of ’15.

Gage worked as a Commercial Fisherman for 5 years both in Boston and Rhode Island.

Gage had so much love for life and always up for a good adventure right in “the bog” of Marlboro or the wilderness of Alaska. He loved riding motorcycles, dirt bikes, and 4-wheelers. Gage was an avid sports fan always hanging out and watching his favorite New England teams. Gage was very devoted and protective of his loved ones. But most of all he just enjoyed spending time with his friends, family, girlfriend Madi and Frenchie Chief.

Gage is survived by his parents, Christopher and Karianne Styffe of Marlborough; his sister, AT3, Olyvia Styffe, USN, of VA; his brother, Chase Styffe of Marlborough; Maternal Grandfather, Larry P Moulton Sr. of FL; Paternal Grandmother, Luanne (Hinds) Styffe of Sudbury and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his Maternal Grandmother, Lucille (Miele) Moulton and his Paternal Grandfather, Dana Styffe.

Idalina (Travassos) Cabral. He was raised in Santa Maria and after completing his education, he moved to Sao Miguel to work for his late Uncle. He eventually immigrated to Hudson in 1965. In 1966 he returned to Sao Miguel to marry his wife and best friend, Fatima. Two years later, in 1968, Fatima immigrated to the United States to join José in Hudson where, together, they raised their two children. José spent 22 years as an automotive assembler at the General Motors plant in Framingham before he retired in 1990. He then worked for Device Technology, Inc. in Southborough, as a machine operator, before completely retiring at the age of 73.

José was a longtime member of Saint Michael Parish in Hudson. He was an avid soccer enthusiast and a fierce Sporting Soccer Club fan. He also enjoyed swimming, reading, taking vacations and listening to his Portuguese music. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family and especially enjoyed playing cards together with them.

In addition to his devoted wife Fatima, he is survived by 2 children, (Maria) Clara Swartz and her husband Aaron J. of Grafton, MA and Paul R. Cabral and his wife Jena R. Rotheim of Saratoga Springs, NY; 3 siblings, Natalia Cabral and her husband Humberto of FL, Antoinette Cabral and her husband Antonio of CA, and Lobelia Correia and her husband Miguel of Hudson, MA; 5 grandchildren, Rachel E., Rebecca E., and Sophia R. Swartz, Alexander R. and Samuel R. Cabral and several nieces and a nephew.

Karla W. Thompson, 72

HUDSON - José Antonio Travassos Cabral, 80, of Hudson, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Marlborough Hospital, after a period of declining health.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Maria Fatima (Oliveira) Cabral.

José Antonio was born in Vila Do Porto, Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal on September 12, 1941, a son of the late Antonio Joaquim and Maria

HUDSON - Karla W. Thompson, 72, of Hudson, passed away peacefully at UMass Memorial Hospital-Marlborough on Wednesday, June 8, 2022.

Born in Brookline, MA, Karla was the daughter of the late Edward T. and Katherine (Waage) Englund.

Upon graduating from Newton North High School in 1967, Karla went on to earn an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lasell Jr. College in 1969. The following year, she married her former husband, the late John H. Thompson.

They eventually settled down in Marlboro where she would dedicate several years as a stayat-home mother to their daughters, Jennifer and Rebecca.

When her children started school, Karla began working in the food service department at Bigelow and Richer Elementary Schools. Later in 1988, she started her career at Marlborough Hospital. For close to 30 years she was a devoted hospital employee, who started in the Union St. Café and retired from the Medical Records department in 2015. Her loving colleagues fondly remember her wit, her positivity, and her caring personality. Karla was always personable; she formed and sustained many life-long friendships, her smile and laugh will be missed by many.

Karla adored her cat, Jake, a loyal companion, who remained by her side for over 16 years. Her pastimes included bowling, calligraphy, and gardening. She loved traveling and enjoyed studying the culture and history behind her new adventures. She was intrigued by lighthouses, hot air balloons, meteorology, and enthusiastically tracked hurricanes. Karla had a natural eye for photography, and she captured many awards for her stunning pictures. She appreciated wildlife and could often be found exploring mother nature, camera in hand, reveling in the tranquility of flora and fauna.

She is survived by her two loving daughters, Jennifer Thompson and her partner Mike Nogueira of Worcester, MA, and Rebecca Rios and her husband Moises of Granite Shoals, TX, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Moises, Noah, and Timothy.

Gary F. Foti, 76 CANTON, GA - Gary F. Foti, 76, of Canton, GA, formerly of Marlborough, MA,

passed away after a battle against Parkinson’s and other health complications on Friday, March 25, 2022, with his daughter, Amie Bennett by his side. Born in Marlborough, he was the son of the late Rocco J. and Dorothy J. (Foley) Foti; younger brother to late Lawrence “Larry” Foti and older brother to late Patricia (Foti) Vasconcelos.

During his childhood, Gary enjoyed visiting the Marlborough Public Library daily, which was just steps away from his home on Witherbee Street.

He continued to talk about visiting the library often and enjoyed following the events taking place there over the years. Most recently, he talked about the renovation taking place which he would have loved to see in person.

Gary was a graduate of Marian High School in Framingham, class of 1963. He then went on to nursing school at McLean Hospital in Boston where he met his future wife Cathy (Smith) Belair and made many other lifelong friendships. Gary continued on to anesthesia school and enrolled in the Air Force. Eventually, he moved south to Georgia, following his aunt and uncle Dr. And Mrs. Riccardi and family. It was in the Atlanta area where he began his career as a nurse anesthetist and continued his service in the Air Force Reserves.

Gary found great happiness in making memories with friends and family. He especially loved to visit the beach, watch air shows, be in the know about everybody’s business, see the accomplishments of his two grandsons and travel the world to such places as England, France, Italy, and Mexico.

Gary is survived by his only child and daughter, Amie FotiBennett and her husband Oscar, his two grandsons, Jaeden and Jace Bennett, his aunt, Peggy Bartolini, his sister-inlaw, Sue (Cincotta) Foti, his nieces Jackie Malloy and Laurie Baj and their families, his nephews, Anthony Foti and Chris Foti and their families.

He is also survived by his exwife and lifelong friend, Cathy (Smith) Belair as well as many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends that he loved, especially his partner, Steve Odom of Atlanta, GA. The Slattery Funeral Home of Marlborough assisted with arrangements.

Westborough hosts July 4th kickoff celebration

By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Guests of all ages got a head start in celebrating the July 4th holiday last Friday at the Westborough July 4th Block Party at Bay State Commons.

The block party is now back on schedule after it was canceled in 2020 and pushed to August last summer due to pandemic restrictions.

This year’s event began with patriotic music performed by the Interboro Community Band conducted by Matt Lefebvre. Audience members waved American flags that were distributed free by the Rotary Club of Westborough.

Live musical entertainment continued with classic rock-‘n’roll tunes performed by The Reminisants, a longtime staple of this event.

Westborough’s Simply Windows offers residents a window to the world

By Jeff Theodore Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Kendra Weldon always knew she wanted to enter the interior design industry.

For 15 years, she worked in the furniture and home interior fields in management and sales. Later, she decided to step out on her own, opening Weldon Interiors. After four years, Weldon rebranded her business as Simply Windows.

The business then celebrated last year as it opened its new location on East Main Street in Westborough.

Now, Simply Windows has grown as it continues to thrive.

“I wanted to be good at doing one thing rather than be OK at several things,” Weldon recalled in a recent interview.

“So, I decided to dive into learning about window treatments from back to front in order to know how to do it right.”

Simply Windows expands After an uneven start initially due to the state of the economy, Simply Windows has grown by leaps and bounds, serving between 50 to 80 customers per month.

“It’s more than I envisioned and I’ve learned that as Simply Windows has grown, it’s had to change,” Weldon said.

Business eyes future Weldon, a graduate of the Chamberlayne School of Design, said Simply Windows handles up to four window treatment installations a day, with some projects more detailed than others.

Her advice to potential cus-

tomers, both residential and commercial, is to be wary of certain price points and to ask the right questions.

“Some people go another route and buy the less expensive options online,” she said. “Cheapest isn’t always the best and might be more expensive to replace later.”

As for the future of Simply Windows, Weldon says she’s satisfied with its growth at the moment and has no intentions of expanding anytime soon.

“The window treatment business isn’t easy,” she says.

“We plan to grow step by step. We took a lot of steps last year. I want to get a solid base rather than expand too quickly.”

That’s the message of Chef Wachira Sittikong, known as Chef New, who has helped lead a rebranding of Yoong Tong Thai Restaurant as La Miette La Mai Thai Bistro, located at 278 Main Street in Northborough.

From age 12, he worked in his family’s restaurant.

When his family talked about selling the restaurant, though, Chef New decided he had to take over alongside his business partner, Rush Sukto.

Applying lessons learned while studying at Le Cordon Bleu, Chef New developed a concept to refresh the restaurant’s traditions by merging Thai and French cuisines into a more modern, contemporary fusion menu.

Most of the staples are still on the menu, which has been enhanced by Chef New’s creative techniques, pairings, plating, and new chef specialties.

Loving to work off-menu as well, Chef New is always rolling custom-made sushi rolls to order. He has added refreshing Thai-inspired cocktails, each carrying a story of where it came from in Thailand.

Speaking in an interview, Chef New touted a series of new tropical drinks, including Mai High, Thai Rum drink Sabai Sabai, an ocean-hued Blue Pattaya, and the local favorite La Mai Tai. New highlighted Sukto,

guitar duo from Boylston offered an unforgettable blend of jazz and current-day hits.

The music program proceeded with roughly a dozen additional performances by local acts in June alone.

“A lot of people in Northborough have been asking for this,” Chef New said. “La Miette La Mai is a great place

to unwind and have fun.”

The wine program is led by expert sommeliers, Harry Zarkades and Biagio Bovenga.

The fusion and pairing philosophy extends beyond the menu as well.

Chef New makes a point of partnering with local farms, families, breweries, and businesses.

Chef New is delighted by the fresh farm ingredients from nearby Yellick’s Farm in Northborough, complimenting owner Kerrie Yellick.

“Kerrie is amazingly talented,” he said. “Every time I go, she always surprises me with new and unique ingredients.”
