Northborough celebrates reopened Assabet Park

The park officially re-opened on Memorial Day weekend.

Right now, the right to abortion care is at risk because of a deliberate, decades-long takeover of the Supreme Court by powerful right-wing extremists. We’re seeing the culmination of this takeover as the Court just overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that made abortion access a constitutional right.

This opens the door for states to outlaw abortion and take us back to a time when women were forced to go through with an unwanted pregnancy, potentially endangering their health and hurting their ability to provide for their families.

But it’s possible to undo this damage.

The Judiciary Act would add four seats, restoring balance to the Supreme Court.

It’s the solution that recent polling showed is supported by the majority of Americans, and it’s what we need to move away from partisan rulings that dismantle our rights and freedoms. And it’s been done before.

In fact, Congress has changed the size of the Supreme Court seven times already in our nation’s history. It’s time to do it again.

I’m urging Congress to pass the Judiciary Act of 2021 to ensure we protect our fundamental freedoms and restore balance to our courts now.

Organic Wines

eople are becoming more aware of the foods and beverages they consume and how these are produced.

Most wines are not organic. In order to be USDA-certified organic, wines must have been grown and produced following specific regulations. Organic viticulture is the starting point.

No man-made compounds such as fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides can be applied. Instead, organic compost is used to fertilize the soil and provide nutrients for both the soil and the vines. Any additives that are used during winemaking must also be organically grown and free of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and added sulfites. Organic wine has a shorter shelf life and may lose some of its original flavor as it ages.

A notable difference between organic American and organic European wines is the amount of sulfites permitted in the final product. Westborough Farmers’ Market kicks off season in new location

By Stuart Foster Reporter WESTBOROUGH - A revamped Westborough Farmers’ Market saw its opening day last month after a change of hands and location over the past two years.

Market Manager Jeanette McCarthy said that the Farmers’ Market had 25 vendors on opening day on June 23, up from an average eight to 10 last year.

The market boasted an assortment of different vendors including bakeries, farms, meat vendors and Indian food kits.

“The best thing about the market is really supporting the local economy and the local businesses, and that’s something that I think Westborough citizens are really interested in,” McCarthy said. “It’s really great to bring everybody together and give them that opportunity.”

McCarthy said that the increase in vendors could be attributed to the market’s relocation to Congregation B’nai Shalom on East Main Street.

The Farmers’ Market had been held at the Congregational Church on West Main Street for many years. That spot had fewer parking options, though.

And the area had heavy traffic.

Looking around Westborough for different parking lots that could host the market, McCarthy eventually found an ideal location in B’nai Shalom and reached out to congregation leaders.

“They were so all in. They

loved the idea,” McCarthy said.

“They have been a fantastic partner.”

Rotary steps in The location of the Farmers’ Market is not the only thing that has changed over the last few years. Previously, it was organized by Dismas House, which is a non-profit social services organization based in Worcester.

McCarthy said that they decided not to continue in 2021, however.

That’s where the Westborough Rotary Club stepped in, taking over the task of running the market.

McCarthy credited Rotarians Heather Abraham and Kathy Wilfert as being instrumental in saving the Farmers’ Market.

Abraham proposed that the Rotary Club begin organizing the market, and the club voted to take this role up. Wilfert has also helped manage the market since 2021.

“I think [the] Rotary [Club]

does a lot of great for the community, and I don’t think that people always make the connection,” McCarthy said. “They see the things getting done, I don’t know that they know Rotary does it.”

Market features music, face painting and more In addition to vendors, the market’s recent opening day had attractions like face painting, henna tattoos and live music from the Long Lost String Band.

Performers including Karen Amlaw, Miguel Melendez and Luanne Crosby will now continue to augment market dates throughout the remainder of the season.

Some of the vendors for the market will additionally be present throughout the entire season, while others will only sell on certain dates.

The Westborough Farmers’ Market will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. each Thursday through Oct. 20.

“Our anticipated market is that it would be more of a warehouse, distribution user,” Sullivan said.

Site spans 10.5 acres The application was filed

by Shrewsbury Land Property Owner, LLC, which is based in Boston.

The site, located at 440 Hartford Turnpike, spans 10.5 acres on the corner of Stoney Hill Road and Hartford Turnpike.

It’s being constructed as a speculative building, which typically means that the developers work to attract tenants either during or after their construction process.

Sullivan noted that they are proposing a right turn in and out of the site onto Route 20.

There would be 28 loading dock doors on the front of the building facing the road.

Sullivan noted that his team had already received a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) to position the loading docks in that way, noting that the building would help block out noise for homes on nearby Stoney Hill Road and Thistle Hill Drive.

“We just thought that was a better orientation versus having the loading operations facing the neighborhood behind us,” Sullivan said.

Site previously part of The Pointe at Hills Farm The land was previously permitted as part of a 40B project called The Pointe at Hills Farm.

Back in 2015, Smart Growth Design LLC applied for a comprehensive permit for that project. The plans would have located 280 apartment units on two noncontiguous sites at 440 Hartford Turnpike and 526 Hartford Turnpike, roughly a quarter mile to the east along Route 20.

According to the ZBA’s 2016 decision, Smart Growth Design LLC later reduced the number of units to 248. Phase one of the project then specifically would have focused on building 156 units at 440 Hartford Turnpike.

At the time, the Board of Selectmen did not support the project as part of a request for a Local Initiative Program application with the state

Department of Housing and Community Development.

Community Advocate reporting in 2016 further noted that opponents asked the state to reject the project, saying it was too large, disruptive and wrong for the area.

Ultimately, the ZBA granted the comprehensive permit in late 2016. A couple of years

later, the ZBA granted an extension of the term of the comprehensive permit decision.

However, in 2021, the ZBA received an application to modify the comprehensive permit, which reduced the scale, scope and number of units for the project.

According to the ZBA’s 2021 decision, the owner had sold

440 Hartford Turnpike and proposed to develop “phase two” of The Pointe at Hills Farm at 526 Hartford Turnpike.

The ZBA approved this modification in October of last year. In December, the developers were back before the board yet again to seek more changes – one of which was an increase in the number

of units from 92 to 93.

Next steps The public hearing before the Conservation Commission for the 440 Hartford Turnpike industrial building was continued until July 19.

The project will also go before the Planning Board later this month.

They ultimately found Dan Murphy, who has worked as a music director in 26 countries. Now, he’s music directing “Nunsense” in Shrewsbury.

“Dan saved our show,” Smith declared. “He knows the show very well and loves it. In fact, he’s a former seminarian, so he knows all the religious references in the musical.”

The production team feels blessed that Murphy joined them.

“We like to say that it was divine intervention that Dan came to us in our hour of need,” Smith said on behalf of the production team.

“Mother Superior’s parents fell off the wire once, and she says in the show, ‘I made a

This role gives Sarkisian the chance to explore a range of personality traits. In one scene, for example, the typically commanding Mother Superior loses her composure after sniffing a

Northborough selectmen present town administrator’s review

By Laura Hayes Senior Reporter NORTHBOROUGH - Town Administrator John Coderre will remain at the helm of Northborough after a performance review and contract renewal in recent weeks.

Coderre has served in town since 2003, acting as town administrator since 2008.

“John, thank you very much for another year of, in my opinion, very, very excellent fiscal management and operations management for everything across the town,” said Selectman Jason Perreault during the Board of Selectmen’s meeting last Monday.

He continued that the last several years have been “extraordinarily difficult” for

Coderre and other town staff while going through COVID-19.

“I just appreciate the continuing dedicated effort over the entire fiscal year, [and the] last couple fiscal years, to keep us on track, keep us well positioned financially to be able to have the flexibility to adapt to whatever changing conditions bring us,” Perreault said. “I look forward to another year.”

The Board of Selectmen presented the results of Coderre’s review, for which he received a rating of 4.0 out of 5.

“I think [that] is an excellent rating, given that we have a diverse board with members with a lot of experience and members with less experience,” said Chair Mitch Cohen.

Cohen did not participate in the review, noting that he

was not a voting member of the board during most of the review period.

He said last month, however, that he and Coderre had a discussion about the town administrator review and goals process.

Plans to develop Northborough Bartlett Pond peninsula return to Planning Board

NORTHBOROUGH - Plans to develop a property at 75 Ridge Road in Northborough have headed back to the Planning Board.

First presented last summer, and revisited since then, the project proposals have evolved again, with developers now pitching a plan to construct three homes on the site.

“It’s been a long road getting here,” said project engineer Scott Cameron during a June 21 Planning Board meeting.

The approximately fouracre property is a peninsula on Bartlett Pond. It currently houses eight structures in varying states of decay.

Throughout developer Downeast Residential LLC’s meetings with the Planning Board over the past year, representatives have shown the board photos from the property – including images of a PT cruiser with a tree through it as well as trash and debris.

Previous plans called for more homes This plan for three new homes is the latest idea for this particular site after the developers went before the Planning Board last summer for an informal presentation.

Cameron said they began looking at the property in 2019.

Last year, the developers asked the Planning Board to consider adding the Residential C zoning district, which includes the Ridge Road property, to the town’s bylaw for open space-residential design.

The developers said this change would allow them to fit as many as eight homes on the property, though they planned to reduce that number to five.

However, the Planning Board expressed hesitancy at making that change.

“I’d hate …to change the bylaws for an entire district for one project right now without knowing what could happen as a result of it,” Planning Board member Anthony Ziton said at a Dec. 7 meeting.

A site eyed by developers in Northborough is largely run down, with a tree going through this PT Cruiser.

Plans explained Now, the developers are proposing to build their three homes around a common driveway.

“The views from the property are breathtaking,” Cameron said. “I saw this for the first time in fall with the foliage in place. It’s quite amazing.”

However, he said the property has been “intensely” used for a long period of time.

Cameron said some cesspools on the site are open and hard to see because of the plants covering the ground.

He said he scaled a pile of garbage on the site, though, measuring it at about eight feet tall and about 30 feet in circumference.

“I wasn’t sure how deep below the ground it went,” Cameron said. “But it’s just garbage on garbage on garbage.”

Cameron said there’s a baseline cost to return the property to a state where it could be used. In the past, the developers have likened the cleanup cost in this case to the price of buying another tract of land.

Speaking on June 21, town staff and Planning Board members asked numerous questions about several topics, including the trees that they planned to save.

Cameron detailed benchmarks for determining whether trees could be saved and said his team has developed a construction sequence with the Conservation Commission, which will include marking trees to be saved and removed if this project moves forward.

Planning Board member Bill Pierce complimented developers, acknowledging possible work ahead.

“I really appreciate, number one, you guys willing to come in and do this work to make this property right. But, number two, the fact that you are trying to keep as many of the trees on the outside of the property that you can,” Pierce said.

The Planning Board did not make a decision on this latest project proposal last month, instead continuing its public hearing to July 14.

Shrewsbury selectmen sign development agreement for South Street 55+ project

SHREWSBURY - Plans for a nearly 200-unit senior housing development near the intersection of Route 20 and South Street in Shrewsbury may soon come before the Zoning Board of Appeals following a Board of Selectmen vote last Tuesday.

The selectmen unanimously approved a development agreement with the developers, Greystar Development East LLC, during the June 28 meeting.

Though its location has drawn some concerns from the selectmen, the project would improve Shrewsbury’s proportion of affordable housing units. That, officials say, could insulate the town against other developers seeking to utilize the state affordable housing law, known as 40B, that allows them to overrule local zoning on qualified affordable housing projects.

Tuesday’s vote came after

Greystar staff members in November presented their project to the Board of Selectmen.

They were presenting partly to see if the town was interested in pursuing what is called a Local Initiative Program (LIP) application with the state Department of Housing and Community Development.

“While it wouldn’t be our first choice to have housing on that parcel of land, we do recognize the benefits of entering into a LIP agreement and signing off on this and moving forward in the process because it does give us…some control and a seat at the table to have these back and forth discussions,” Selectman Beth Casavant said.

Casavant noted that Shrewsbury hasn’t met an affordable housing threshold of 10% of its total stock. That leaves the town open to 40B projects.

“This one may be a little more desirable or palatable to people because it is an over 55,” Casavant said. “However,

Casavant said she would s u p p o r t t h e a g re e m e n t “knowing it’s in the best interest of the town.”

“Because either way, this project is happening,” Casavant said. “I’d rather have a seat at the table than not.”

Project explained

Assistant Town Manager Kristen Las said on Tuesday this is known as a “friendly” 40B project.

The project would be developed at 409 South St. The site is just under 15 acres near the intersection of Route 20 and South Street.

Greystar is interested in constructing 196 units, which would be restricted to active adults ages 55 and older. Of

those 196 units, 147 would be market rate and 49 would be affordable.

The selectmen voted to cosign the LIP application in January.

“As part of that LIP agreement, before we agreed to cosign that application, the Board of Selectmen was very clear that they intended to enter into a development agreement with Greystar in order for us to have a little bit more control over the application and to guide the process in that component,” Las said Tuesday.

Greystar received approval for the LIP from DHCD in April.

Las, Town Manager Kevin Mizikar and other town staff, meanwhile, have also been working on negotiating the development agreement with Greystar.

In the agreement, which was shared with the Community Advocate following this meeting, the town acknowledged that the municipal sewer system currently doesn’t have capacity to handle the amount of sewer flow that is anticipated to be generated by the project.

Shrewsbury is studying the sewer system in the area to determine necessary repairs, upgrades and other improvements.

“When the system improvements are completed, the pump stations will have the capacity to handle the sewage flow generated by the project,” the agreement read.

The agreement further noted that the town will work to complete improvements so that the system will be operational and able to be connected to receive and transmit sewage from the project no later than Dec. 31, 2024.

During Monday’s meeting, Cohen said he previously asked the selectmen if anyone wanted to sponsor a motion not to renew Coderre’s contract.

“No one stepped forward,” Cohen said.

Excluding Cohen, each selectmen filled out their own anonymous review of Coderre.

Among opportunities identified for improvement, one selectman wrote that Coderre could improve dealing with people.

Another said Coderre should “continue the work to include residents and committees that are disconnected from the majority of town operations.” That same selectman asked Coderre to continue “open explanation and education” to find solutions.

“I don’t envy anyone that has to work for five bosses that potentially change every year,” Cohen said. “That’s a hard job unto itself.”

Cohen encouraged selectmen with suggestions for improvement to speak directly with Coderre, adding that he could be present.

Bobo, a large Alaskan Malamute (138 lbs / 32”) is looking for his new home as an only pet with no children.

Dealership violates license, town says Route 9 Nissan opened last year at 273 Turnpike Road.

Dealerships are only allowed a certain amount of vehicles to park on the lot. The license contains conditions that specify the amount of unregistered vehicles they’re allowed per square foot.

According to Foster, the town was told that Route 9 Nissan was parking vehicles in an “auxiliary location” at 287 Turnpike Road.Since then, the town has been in conversations with Nissan’s attorney Kevin Reilly and his client, leading to the meeting on June 28, according to Foster.

later than we should have been,” Reilly said, addressing the Select Board. “It’s one of those situations where internally the left hand and the right hand weren’t necessarily communicating that well.”

Reilly said that “there was a lot going on at the site” with construction, remodeling and dealership operations occurring simultaneously. “ These things sort of sprung from that,” Reilly said. “I can’t do [anything] other than assure the board that this would correct the situation, and we certainly would not let this to be a repeat situation.”

WESTBOROUGH - Representatives of Westborough’s Route 9 Nissan dealership apologized last week after they were reportedly told their dealership was out of compliance with its license from the town.

The dealership, town officials allege, has been parking vehicles in non-permitted auxiliary locations for some time. They were then visited by police in April and “advised of their concern,” according to Assistant Town Manager Kim Foster.

“It’s disappointing that apparently since the dealership’s opened, you’ve been out of compliance with the license,” Select Board member Allen Edinberg said during a June 28 Select Board meeting.

LLC — which is doing business as Route 9 Nissan — was requesting an amendment to its Class 1 dealer license, which it currently has.

Foster said the amendment would add an auxiliary lot at 287 Turnpike Road to store up to 100 unregistered vehicles for sale.

That property is owned by Commerce City, an office facility that currently has excess capacity “given the fact that many employees of those businesses are working remotely,” according to Reilly.

“We are able to work out a situation with them where we can take advantage of their excess capacity,” Reilly said.

Longtime holiday parade returns to the Southborough Library 4th of July | from page 1

The parade traveled from the library on Main Street, up Common Street past the war veterans’ monuments and then through the Town House.

Marching alongside the library patrons were Assistant Library Director and Children’s Librarian Kim Ivers, and library page Maggie Fitzgerald. They carried CD players playing patriotic music.

The celebration continued on the library lawn where ice cream treats were served.

This was one of several celebrations accross the region this past weekend, marking the 4th of July in area communities.

While towns did not hold fireworks displays, Shrewsbury convened in Dean Park on Sunday for a special holiday concert by the band Beatles for Sale.

N O RT H B O RO U G H - Fo r months earlier this year, Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School students helped build a new building for the Northborough Water Department on School Street in town.

Last month, the town held a “thank you” lunch for the students to show their gratitude for their help.

Department of Public Works Director Scott Charpentier said they plan to move all of their operations into the building, including computer and security stations, quick response vehicles, the supervisor’s office and a shower.

The existing Water Department building will be renovated, being used as a storage space and as a workshop area.

As Charpentier explained it, the Water and Sewer Departments have expanded “quite

a bit.”

The building was originally designed for the Water Department. But the Sewer Department was added to town operations in the 1960s, eventually outgrowing the old building.

So, the DPW wanted to build a new building.

Charpentier said that every dollar spent on the project was paid for by the water and sewer ratepayers.

“Our customers built this with their rate payments,” Charpentier said.

As a result, the department wanted to keep the cost of the project as low as possible.

Under a conventional process, Charpentier estimated the project cost at $1.5 million or more. Town Meeting, instead, approved $900,00 for the project.

Coulson said the students have done residential and light commercial work. But this project was a mix between

residential framing in a commercial situation.

The benefit of this project was “huge,” Coulson said, adding that they couldn’t duplicate this work in a shop environment.

“When you get out into an environment like this here, it puts all of that knowledge to use … because it’s all real work,” Coulson said. “If we didn’t have this off-campus ability to do this for the community and the towns, our students I think would be missing out on some of that real-hands on experience.”

Charpentier noted that the students will encounter a similar structure when they get into the field.

“It was a good interaction,” Charpentier said. “At the end of the day, it saved the ratepayers $400,000 plus and helped out Assabet Valley Tech and gave the department what they needed.”

Shrewsbury Girl Scout Troop collects backpacks for foster children

By Stuart Foster Reporter SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury Girl Scout Troop 65174 members received their Bronze Award earlier this year after collecting 110 backpacks and additional supplies for the Department of Children & Families (DCF) in Worcester.

Bronze Awards are the highest award that Girl Scout Juniors can receive, and they are awarded for projects that make a difference in scouts’ communities.

Sue Fournier, one of the leaders for Troop 65174, said that her scouts wanted to work on a project that would help foster children.

“A lot of times, when they’re taken out of their homes, they don’t have time to take a lot of stuff,” Fournier said. “The girls thought it would be a nice gesture to

have their own backpack.”

So, Troop 65174 members set up a drop-off box for backpacks at Papa’s Hardware in town. They also put up a sign promoting their effort in front of the former Beal School.

Fournier also said that her

fifth-grade scouts got permission to put up another box at Sherwood Middle School.

From September through late February, the troop collected 110 backpacks, some of which were new.

Fournier said the troop invited Gina Doyle, an ambassador for Worcester DCF, to explain to the scouts how the agency works and how children end up in foster homes.

“She was really explicit with the girls,” Fournier said.

“She really told them what it is they do and how they take care of these kids.”

Fournier thanked Papa’s Hardware owners Paula and Fred Betti, who she said always help the troop for projects like this.

She also thanked Westborough-based Hollywood Salvage owner Judy Hughes for donating many boxes of clothing for foster children.

The troop’s Bronze Award project was recognized at a townwide bridging ceremony on June 7 at Oak Middle School.

Dubbed bridging ceremonies, these events recognize the completion of one level of scouting and the accession to another, symbolized by the scouts crossing a bridge.

This year’s bridging ceremony also saw 17 12th graders bridge from the Ambassador level to Adult level, representing the culmination of the Girl Scout experience.

Fournier said that the 17 scouts reaching that milestone was a historically high number for both Shrewsbury and the entire council.

“They never had that many 12th graders bridging to Adult because a lot of them drop out in high school because they have so many other things to do,” Fournier said.

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor SHREWSBURY - A Shrewsbury resident will pay $120,000 to the state as part of an agreement roughly six years after an explosion and fire on his property released hazardous chemicals and fumes, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.

The agreement came as part of a settlement to a lawsuit the state filed in 2019.

In addition to his payment, Edgar Muntz, Jr. will also be required to complete “certain remaining remediation activities at the property.”

“These defendants ignored our state’s important environmental protection laws and exposed workers and nearby residents to hazardous materials,” Attorney General Maura Healey said last Wednesday.

“Today’s settlement ensures that our taxpayers won’t foot the bill for these dangerous actions and should deter others from such reckless conduct.”

According to the AG’s Office, Muntz hired a demolition contractor — P&M Asphalt Services, Inc. — to demolish a backyard shed on a property he owned at 393 Oak Street in Shrewsbury.

That shed was reportedly

filled with hundreds of containers of chemicals, including dynamite, mercury, arsenic, chloroform and sodium cyanide.

It then caught fire, the AG’s office said, releasing chemicals into the air and soil on Oct. 25, 2016.

While the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) began cleanup efforts when a neighbor notified it and other agencies, according to the AG’s Office, Muntz and his contractor allegedly did not initially notify agencies of the incident.

“This case shows that when responsible parties fail to respond to a significant release of hazardous materials, MassDEP will, as appropriate, step in to protect human health and the environment,” MassDEP’s Central Regional Office Director MaryJude Pigsley said last Wednesday.

Workers and a neighbor developed respiratory problems following this incident, according to the AG’s Office.

Last week’s settlement, likewise, comes after a separate settlement with P&M Asphalt Services, Inc., which also sent a $120,000 payment to the state.

Money from both settlements will help reimburse the state for its costs in helping clean up this incident.

Paul R. LaPierre, 86 SHREWSBURY - Paul R. LaPierre 86 of Shrewsbury died Friday June 24, 2022 at UMass Hospital Worcester. Born in Worcester, Paul was husband to Janice M. (Richmond) who he enjoyed 61 years of marriage with until her death in 2018, and the son of the late Joseph and Helen (St. George) LaPierre.

Paul is survived by his son Robert and his wife Jessica, his daughter Paulette McKenzie and her husband Keith, one son Bruce LaPierre died in 2017.

Barrie S. Hunter, 83 April 4, 1939 – June 14, 2022 MARLBOROUGH - Barrie, an amazing self-made man. He worked in the computer industry in its early days and through the evolution from temperature controlled rooms to cell phones. His zest for life included travel around the world, sailing, Golfing and skiing the slopes in Australia and the US. His love of adventure was only second to his love of family. He was always there for his wife, children and grandchildren. He was the “go to” man of everyone.

His list of friends is incredibly long, from his birth place in Australia, to Europe and in the US, his adopted home.

He is survived by his wife and best friend Anne, daughters Cathy Doyle and Susan Langone; sons in law Paul Doyle and Derek Langone; grandchildren Stephanie Doyle, Alissa Langone, Brandon Doyle, Avery Langone and two great Grandchildren, Braiden and Colton Blash.

Shrewsbury student wins first place prize at state science fair

By Stuart Foster Reporter SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury High School (SHS) student Nevin Thinagar won major recognition in May when he earned first place for his project at the 2022 Massachusetts Science and Engineering Fair.

Thinagar’s project was called: “Reducing the Impact of Wingtip Vortices on Aircraft Through the Use of a Novel Winglet.”

Thinagar, who is a rising junior at SHS, said that he was surprised to win first place, even though he knew he had put in the time to successfully work through his project and analyze its data.

“I knew I had spent the time to do that, but at the same time it’s always surprising when you do really well, especially at a statewide level,” Thinagar said. “It was surprising, but at the same time I sort of felt like I had done the work.”

Project wins recognition The process of qualifying for the statewide fair began in February for Thinagar when he competed in the Shrewsbury High School Science Fair. The projects judged in the top half from Shrewsbury qualified for the Worcester Regional Science Fair, where anyone who places advanced to the statewide fair.

Thinagar previously participated in the statewide fair last year and placed third. He said that these fairs have been held virtually since he was in the

seventh grade, which marked the last time he attended one in person. While he said it was disappointing that the statewide fair did not have a hybrid or fully in-person format, overall Thinagar said that the statewide fair was handled well.

“Every year has just been a great opportunity to share something you’re passionate about and also get feedback on it from experts in that field,” Thinagar said.

Thinagar said that he has always been interested in aerospace and wanted to be a pilot when he was younger before realizing he truly wants to build aircraft as an aerospace engineer.

Thinagar’s project is about winglets, the structures on the edge of an airplane’s wing that stick up to reduce the flow of air rising from under the wing. In his project, Thinagar developed new winglet designs allowing aircraft to fly more efficiently.

At the regional level, Thinagar’s project won the NSAP Naval Award, given by the Navy to research that could benefit the U.S. government.

At the state level, the project also won the Pauline J. Lamarche Memorial Award, which is given to first place projects that demonstrate excellence in STEM research.

Thinagar’s placement at the regional level additionally qualified him for the Regeneron International Science and Engi-

neering Fair, where he placed fourth in the statics and dynamics category and won $500.

Student credits SPS programs Thinagar attributed a lot of his success to Shrewsbury Public Schools programs, especially a research methods course where he could focus on his project.

The research methods course and his teacher Catherine Philips, he said, helped to keep him on track.

“Programs like these are the kind of programs that Shrewsbury Public Schools should be focused on,” Thinagar said.

E. coli prompts health advisories in Shrewsbury

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor SHREWSBURY - Reports of high levels of E. coli bacteria prompted health advisories in Shrewsbury last Thursday, with health officials asking community members to avoid contact with water at the Oak Island Boat Ramp and Jordan Pond in town.

The advisories came jointly from the Worcester Division of Public Health and the Shrewsbury Board of Health based on lab test data.

The advisories remained in effect as of press time and will remain in effect until further notice, when further tests show E. coli levels dropping back to “acceptable and safe” levels.

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor SHREWSBURY - A busy day of baseball ended with a pair of wins for the Shrewsbury Legion Post 397 team last Friday in Framingham, as the squad defeated Northborough and Framingham in both halves of an afternoon doubleheader.

Opening the slate of games, Shrewsbury first shut out Northborough, winning by a 6-0 margin.

Shrewsbury then faced the host Framingham team, which it beat 7-2.

The wins improved Shrewsbury’s win-loss record to 12-2 this summer.

They also came just a day after Shrewsbury dominated Sturbridge with an explosive 22-1 defeat last Thursday.

Despite back-to-back losses on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, wins on Friday sent Shrewsbury soaring toward a high profile game at Polar Park in Worcester.

has struggled this summer.

Their win-loss record sat at 4-9 as of Saturday.

The team, likewise, remained within the bottom half of Zone 4 standings despite a win over Framingham last Thursday.

Northborough was due back in action onWednesday with a game against Main South on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester.

Shrewsbury’s Legion Post 397 team took on Northborough on Friday in the first half of a doubleheader at Bowditch Field in Framingham.

Markey endorsed Westborough resident and community activist Kate Donaghue for the new 19th Worcester District house seat. Before that, he backed Worcester Mayor Joe Petty in the 1st Worcester District senate seat to replace retiring senator Harriette Chandler.

“Kate is like a one-woman, multinational, public interest campaign all embodied in one person,” Markey said from the gazebo in Westborough’s Bay State Commons. “It seems impossible that anyone can have this much energy, this much

Markey endorsed Petty outside of the Cellar Bar & Grille and was joined by Northborough Board of Selectmen Chair Mitch Cohen and Selectmen Julianne Hirsh and Kristen Wixted.

Petty, Markey said, would be a great state senator.

“Here we have a candidate in the City of Worcester who has absolutely been the model for what public service should be,” Markey said. “Diversity, education, healthcare, immigration — on each and every one of those issues Joe Petty, as the mayor of Worcester, has been a model for the rest of our nation.

We need that kind of vision up in the state house.”

He encouraged people to vote for Petty if they wanted stronger gun laws and protections for unions, the LGBTQIA+ community and the climate along with increased funding for education and healthcare.

This year’s state primary election is set for September 6.

The general election is November 8.

Donaghue talked about the issues she’s running on — including healthcare, climate change, education and fighting substance use disorder.

Donaghue also talked about her son, Brian Simpson, who died due to a drug overdose in 2018, as well as the work Markey has done fighting substance use disorder. “[Markey] was a hero to me when Brian was first struggling,” Donaghue said.

She said she saw Markey’s work before a good friend told her, “You have a voice. Use it.”

Well known in local Democratic politics, Donaghue has worked with a number of local and national campaigns over the years, canvassing for candidates as part of that work.

While she talked about the issues she was running on, Donaghue noted that she decided to try knocking on doors when Markey was first running for the senate.

Army Reservist receives car donated through Recycled Rides program

REGION - U.S. Army Reserve Specialist Demetrius Coleman received a 2010 Honda Civic last Thursday thanks to the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides program.

The event was hosted at CARSTAR Waldron’s A1 in Lancaster.

Coleman said that he has not had a car since he moved back to Massachusetts from Florida to help his mother, who is disabled, a few years ago. Not having a car caused many problems for Coleman, who had trouble getting to work on time and even buying groceries.

When working overtime for his job with Northeast Security, Coleman said he sometimes had to sleep in the break room because he could not get home.

“Now with this vehicle, it

makes me feel good that I’ll be able to go to college and be able to do anything for myself without having to rely on others,” Coleman said.

He described himself as a “jack of all trades” for electronics and communications.

He has been in the military for seven years.

When he took an aptitude test for the Army, Coleman said that it revealed he had a talent for electronics and technology.

“That’s what really reinforced my wanting to get into computer science,” Coleman said.

“It was kind of touching, with everybody coming together and doing this for somebody that we’ve never met,” Waldron said.
