That victim was taken to UMass Memorial Health for treatment, according to police. Her injuries, however, were not

believed to be life threatening.

The two women — Chrislove Bonney, 31, of Southbridge, and Tanisha Hutchful, 19, of Worcester — were later taken into custody.

Tractor trailer crashes at Marlborough I-495/I-290 interchange OVER TOP

By Stuart Foster Reporter MARLBOROUGH - Three lanes on I-495 North in Marlborough were blocked last Monday afternoon after a tractor trailer rolled over.

The crash took place near exit 65, according to the state Department of Transportation (MassDOT), which warned local motorists of possible traffic delays just before 3 p.m.

A truck, according to State Police, “failed to negotiate” the ramp from I-290 to I-495, crashing and blocking northbound lanes of I-495.

State Police noted that no injuries had been reported. Traffic was inching along on the shoulder of the road as of 3 p.m.

Backups were notable throughout the region, though, with traffic stretching several miles along I-495 as crews worked to clear the crash.

The scene was finally clear just before 5 p.m., according to state police, though heavy residual traffic remained.

COMMUNITY NEWS Affordable Housing Trust talks new units in Westborough

By Laura Hayes Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough Affordable Housing Trust is interested in building affordable units on townowned land off Endicott Drive.

The project was presented to the Select Board last month, prompting some praise from local leaders.

“I’m glad to see the creativity in locating a piece of property because I certainly would not have identified that piece of property,” said Select Board member Patrick Welch on June 14.

What is proposed The Nelson Ball Pickleball Courts are located on the property, which has an entrance onto Lyman Street and is adjacent to the Lake Chauncy parking lot.

Behind the pickleball courts is a wooded area, according to

trustee member Hank Rauch’s presentation.

“The town owns pretty much all of that wooded area,” Rauch said.

The site is approximately five acres. Rauch estimated that about 50% was vacant, though parts of the site can’t be used because of wetlands.

Rauch said the trust has talked with Town Manager Kristi Williams and the Recreation Department to see if there were any pending plans or interest from other departments in the remaining part of the site.

He recalled that there wasn’t, though he noted that funding had been approved by Town Meeting to build a pavilion to support the pickleball courts.

The trust hired WDA Design Group, which had done the layout and engineering for the pickleball courts. WDA created a cursory site plan and unit concept, which Rauch presented to

the Select Board.

WDA reported that the site has potential for between one to three units of affordable housing, Rauch said.

“What they did is they penciled a triplex,” he said. “One could reduce that, could make it any scale. That was the maximum utilization one could achieve on the property, ignoring zoning requirements at this point.”

The property is currently zoned M-1 town owned, but Rauch noted that the adjacent properties are zoned residential single family.

He suggested that the town could extend Endicott Drive, which is currently a dead end, to access the site.

“There’s water, sewer, gas and electric — all that available on Endicott Drive,” Rauch said. “[That] makes it really a feasible development site.”

WDA also suggested that there could be access to the site through the parking lot, though Rauch said it was “unlikely” that

the trust would consider that option.

“When you build affordable housing, it’s helpful to couple it to a neighborhood,” Rauch said.

Allen Edinberg, who is also a member of both the trust and the Select Board, emphasized that the draft design of the units was hypothetical. It wasn’t definitive whether the units will be built to be sold or rented, he said.

He said the trust has discussed having one of the units being on a single floor and accessible.

“We’ll really look at where we see market need for it,” Edinberg said.

Next steps The Select Board gave its support for the trust to take the next steps in the project.

Rauch said their next step is to present the project to the Recreation Commission before beginning to visit other boards and present their proposal.

Additionally, Rauch said the

trust will need to talk with the state Department of Housing and Community Development about options for zoning and “friendly” 40B development.

The state affordable housing law, known as 40B, allows developers to overrule local zoning and apply for a comprehensive permit with the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Edinberg said the trust would get agreement with the Planning Board and go through the normal review process with other boards.

With the support of the boards and Planning Board, then they would go to the ZBA with the project, Edinberg said.

The trust will return to the Select Board with a solid proposal in either the late fourth quarter of the current fiscal year or early in the first quarter of next fiscal year with the hope that, if the project was interesting and feasible, it could be placed on the warrant for Town Meeting in spring 2023 to transfer the property to the trust.

Northborough company wants to increase its storage of flammable materials

NORTHBOROUGH - A research and development facility is seeking to increase its on-site storage of flammable and combustible liquids, flammable gases and flammable solids.

Aspen Aerogels is located at 30 Forbes Road, and it seeks to amend its above-ground storage license.

Specifically, Aspen was requesting to increase the on-site storage of flammable liquids from 880 gallons to 2,000 gallons, combustible liquids from 380 gallons to 500 gallons, flammable gases from 390 cubic feet to 2,000 cubic feet. In addition, it asks that 11 pounds of flammable solids be stored in specific storage rooms and other approved storage containers.

“We can’t take in sometimes enough material to do experiments before we ship the waste out, and it’s caused us to stop doing experiments or to delay things,” Chief Technology Officer George Gould said during the Board of Selectmen’s June 27 meeting.

He explained that Aspen Aerogels was entering the field of automotive safety and battery materials.

Gould is anticipating that this research and development facility would have about 60 employees.

“So really the load on the chemical stores and the amount of work it’s generating, we need more storage in order to complete the daily tests that we do,” Gould said. “…We’re developing new products, and we need to expand our license so we’re not so squeezed with a cap that makes us have to operate to the license limit basically on a daily basis.”

Aspen requests increase As Gould explained it, As-

pen makes a product based on aerogel technology, which is a nanoporous solid, meaning it’s a solid composed primarily of air.

Their primary market in the early years was industrial energy efficiency, Gould said.

Aspen Aerogels’ revenue base is approximately $120 million, but Gould said it was picking up “significantly” as they move into the automotive and battery safety field.

“We’re finding a lot of excitement out there from [original equipment manufacturers] like GM and Toyota and VW and many other OEMS,” Gould said. “We’re working hard to develop products that are going to fit into their vehicles.”

The company’s existing license was issued in 2014.

Director of Environmental Health and Safety Rachael Weiskind and Gould said they are legally required to ship out their hazardous waste, which

is removed by a third party using box trucks.

“It sounds like it’s really great stuff that you’re working on,” said Selectman Kristen Wixted. “You have to understand that we are representing the residents in this neighborhood. We haven’t had this information for a ton of time.”

Wixted asked whether they have had a spill or problem.

Weiskind said there have not been any serious injuries since she’s been at the facility for about two years, and she couldn’t recall any spills in recent times.

“We have very highly regimented programs that encompass not only our laboratory safety, but all OSHA and … EPA programs up there for this reason,” Weiskind said.

“Everything is really managed with really good rigor and control at that site.”

She continued, “Because we’re cognizant of the neighborhood in which we’re in,

Developers pitch new Hyundai dealership in Westborough A developer is interested in developing 180 and 182 Turnpike Road into a Hyundai dealership.

years ago,” he said. “So, it’s in pretty tough shape right now.”

The other property, 180 Turnpike Road, contains a twostory building and abuts the nearby CarMax dealership. The Villages of Walker Meadow, a residential community, are behind the two properties.

The developers propose to raze the buildings on the properties along with the existing parking and utilities, Waterman said.

In place of those structures, the developer wants to construct a 46,843-square-foot Hyundai dealership. Waterman said the first third of the building would be dedicated to sales, while the back would be a service center.

The developers are proposing to construct two levels of a parking deck on top of the building with about 198 parking spaces, Waterman said.

There would be a total of 435 parking spaces on the site.

building would be three stories, according to Waterman.

The Highway Business zoning district, which this development would be located in, allows for four stories and 60 feet in elevation. These plans would comply with both of those limits, Waterman said.

Two existing entrances would be maintained onto Route 9.

Waterman said employees and car delivery carriers would come in through the westerly entrance, which would have a gate. He added that there was a deceleration lane coming into the site.

Select Board member Shelby Marshall asked for “really obvious” signs that the employee entrance wasn’t a customer entrance.

“I could see that being a very dangerous spot for people pulling in, realizing they can’t get through a gate, trying to back up but you’ve got Route 9,” she said.

The former railroad rightof-way for the Boston and Worcester Railway was added to 180 Turnpike Road several years ago as part of a land trade with CarMax, Waterman said.

“This has long been proposed for our [Boston Worcester Air Line Trail] multi-use trail,” said Select Board Chair Ian Johnson.

Part of the BWALT trail has been proposed to run behind these properties as part of a section from Park Street to East Main Street.

As part of the Select Board’s comments to be conveyed to the Planning Board, Johnson requested them to discuss easements with the developers.

“That’s a big area for us to gain easements from the owner of the property,” he said.

Select Board weighs green technology Select Board member Patrick Welch asked whether they were considering using green technologies or plans, such as for the building’s heating and cooling systems.

Project Manager Ashley Cino said they planned to have a lighting control system, but

there weren’t any other specific green technologies being incorporated at the moment.

Berndt added that their technologies would meet energy code and be high efficiency.

“With Hyundai, we’re also incorporating a lot of electric vehicle technology,” Berndt said. “So, there will be an abundance of EV chargers and things like available.”

He added that the EV chargers are in at least three different locations.

Welch asked them to keep it in mind.

“Our community is very green conscious, and we’re trying to drive as much of that technology into our buildings, our residences as well as our commercial industrial properties,” he said.

Next steps This project will now move forward to the Planning Board for approval of the site plan and the Conservation Commission.

Survey seeks information on local parent opinions on COVID-19 vaccination

By Community Advocate Staff REGION - Area health departments are seeking community feedback through a survey of parent attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines for young children.

The survey is specifically aimed at parents of children under the age of five in Northborough, Southborough, Westborough and West Boylston.

As part of their work, officials also hope to identify challenges potentially facing families interested in getting their young children vaccinated, as noted in a Westborough Health Department message on social media last Wednesday.

“We hope to use the results to assess the community’s overall needs and develop educational materials that appropriately address parents’ concerns about the COVID-19 vaccines,” the health department continued.

The survey is organized through the Greater Boroughs Partnership for Health.

Funded by a Department of Public Health grant, the partnership pools efforts and resources in Northborough,

Southborough, Westborough and West Boylston.

An inter-municipal agreement formalizing the collaboration was approved by town select boards last summer.

This survey, likewise, comes just over a month after the CDC recommended that all children between the ages of six months and five years get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Children under the age of five had previously been ineligible.

“Together, with science leading the charge, we have taken another important step forward in our nation’s fight against COVID-19,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a press release announcing the move. “We know millions of parents and caregivers are eager to get their young children vaccinated, and with today’s decision, they can.”

that two women had forced entry into a residence on Julio Drive.

Shrewsbury police wrote in a subsequent statement of facts filed in Westborough District Court that the victim told them Bonney and Hutchful entered a closed, locked front door.

When officers arrived, they found that the screen door was ripped on the outside and unlocked, the statement of facts said.

Court documents detailed specific injuries to the victim, including a cut across her forehead “as if she had been slashed by some type of sharp object” along with large scratches reportedly from fingernails and multiple chunks of hair ripped off her head.

Police reportedly found pictures in the home knocked off the wall, with glass shattered on the floor.

Hutchful allegedly video-

taped Bonney assaulting the victim, according to the statement of facts.

“The victim claimed that this incident was over money that she owed them for failing to pay back money they loaned her for a Lyft,” court documents read.

The victim, police said, had a video on her phone that she said came from Bonney. The video, she reportedly said, showed Bonney and Hutchful at the victim’s house before they drove to the Julio Drive location.

Officers said in their press release that the woman was able to provide a description of the suspects and the vehicle they fled in.

Officer Alicia Brownell later saw the alleged suspect vehicle driving the opposite direction on Rt. 9. She notified officers. Lt. Nick Perna then spotted the vehicle and stopped it as it approached the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge.

Westborough police investigating residential break-ins

WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough Police Department is asking for the community’s help following two residential break-ins.

The first break-in on Harvey Lane was reported at 6:40 a.m. on July 22, and the second on O’Neill Drive was reported at 6:38 a.m. this morning.

Lt. Michael Daniels told the Community Advocate that the residents were both on vacation.

He said police aren’t sure how the suspect entered or exited the homes or exactly what was taken. However, he said it was likely that the same

person may be responsible for both incidents.

Police are asking if you live in the area and observed something suspicious or out of the ordinary to contact the Westborough Police Department detectives at 508-475-4250.

Additionally, the Westborough police are reminding residents that they can call the dispatch center and to inform the police that they will be on vacation and request extra patrols.

Daniels said the police will then do random, but directed patrols in the area.

By Laura Hayes Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH - A Worcester man faces charges after he allegedly attempted to shoplift items from the Tractor Supply Store on Milk Street.

Evan Charbonneau has been charged with shoplifting by concealing.

The reporting party called the Westborough Police Department at 7:37 p.m. yesterday and told officers that the man was in possession of a BB gun and several knives as he was attempting to leave the store, according to a press release from the department.

In a Facebook post, Westborough officers said police arrived on the scene less than a minute

after they received the call and set up a perimeter.

Westborough and Northborough officers reportedly observed a man, who matched the description from witnesses, exit the store.

Police confronted Charbonneau and took him into custody without incident. Officers later said they found the BB gun, several knives and a hatchet on Charbonneau.

“There were no injuries to any parties involved and no danger to the public,” the department wrote on social media.

The Westborough Police Department said that Charbonneau is being held on bail. He was expected to be arraigned at the Westborough District Court on Monday morning.

Developer conducts field investigation at former Shrewsbury Beal School site

By Laura Hayes Managing Editor SHREWSBURY - Developers have recently been onsite at Shrewsbury’s former Beal School, examining the building and planning next steps in their efforts to redevelop it, according to Town Manager Kevin Mizikar.

During the Board of Selectmen’s July 12 meeting, Mizikar said that the developer Civico Greenly has begun its field investigations, which have allowed staff to identify the permits that they will require throughout the local and state permitting process for their envisioned “Beal Commons” mixed-use project.

Back in March, the selectmen approved a land disposition agreement with the developers, which town staff have likened to a precursor to a sale agreement.

That came after several months of negotiations with Civico Greenly, which has called for 55 units on the site, between 7,000 to 8,000 square feet of commercial space and 136 parking spaces.

Developers have envisioned turning Beal into a mixeduse development.

Civico Greenly has indicated that it will submit plans to go through Shrewsbury’s permitting process no later than the beginning of October, according to Mizikar.

These recent field investigations, Mizikar added, have made an additional $12,500 of the developers’ preliminary deposit for the project nonrefundable.

Mizikar separately told the Community Advocate that Civico Greenly’s total deposit is $25,000.

land disposition agreements, reserving more money as a developer moves deeper into their project. This, Mizikar said, aims to ensure that the developer has a growing financial interest in the property at each major step.

“It’s good to see Civico continue to move forward and meet the deadlines associated with the land disposition agreement that the board put in place,” Mizikar said.

Mizikar told the selectmen he would keep them informed as Civico Greenly continues to move forward with its process.

By Laura Hayes Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH - The Town of Westborough has moved to a level five water restriction.

This move means that outdoor lawn and garden watering is restricted at all times and on all days. Additionally, pool filling and car washing is prohibited.

Westborough has had a water restriction in place since May. Earlier this past week, the

restriction was raised to a level four, which prohibited outdoor lawn and garden watering with sprinklers and limited outdoor watering to hand-held hoses and watering cans.

Now, moving into a level five signals critical drought conditions.

Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Beth Card declared a level three critical drought in both the northeast and central regions of the state, which includes both Worcester

and Middlesex counties.

“As the state endured high temperatures and little precipitation, now more than ever it is critical that we all practice water conservation methods across the commonwealth,” Card said in a press release last Thursday. “Minimizing water use now, especially in areas like the Millers and Nashua River watersheds, will allow local water supply systems and natural habitats to rebound more quickly, and will also ensure water resources are available for essential needs, such as drinking water and fire protection.”

This move comes following a week of temperatures in the 90s.

Westborough is not the only community to take steps in light of the drought. Hudson instituted level five water restriction, which banned outdoor watering and prohibited the use of sprinklers and irrigation systems.

WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough Community Land Trust awarded two $1,000 scholarships to graduating Westborough High seniors for student essays they wrote for the trust’s annual Earth Day Essay Contest.

Harrison Smith, who will attend Boston College, and Chocoria Jiang, who will attend NYU, were awarded the scholarships.

Smith’s essay was about the influence an encounter with a swan had on his desire to connect others with nature.

Jiang’s essay was about Lake Chauncy and its impact on her interest in marine conservation issues and her use of art to draw attention to those issues.

The trust also recognized Sophie Scerbin and Lindsay Hall as honorable mentions for their essays. Scerbin wrote about her experiences with trails at Mill Pond and a program she created for children to experience nature. Hall wrote about finding peacefulness in nature and finding ways to protect the environment, like picking up trash.

Builder proposes single-family condos in Hudson

By Stuart Foster Reporter HUDSON – Two houses at 27 Cox St. and 54 Lake St. could soon be torn down and replaced with new single-family condominiums.

The Hudson Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA), however, has raised questions, debating whether this plan qualifies under a bylaw allowing property owners to modify structures that were grandfathered into current zoning regulations.

At a ZBA meeting held on July 14, Merrimack Valley Builders President Paul Litchfield presented a request to demolish the two pre-existing nonconforming structures.

They would be replaced with two detached, single-unit condominiums, although they would be in different places than the current houses.

The new condominiums would span around 3,000 square feet, which Litchfield said was roughly the same size as the current structures. The

proposal also includes a new shared driveway between the two houses, which Litchfield said would provide a better line of sight for residents.

Right now, 27 Cox St. and 54 Lake St. are located on the same parcel. However, they are listed as different addresses. Litchfield said that the new condominiums would be named 27 Cox St. units A and B. “The reason why I went to condos was to kind of clear up the address confusion,” Litchfield said.

Litchfield said that he had to apply for a special permit through the board because the property is nonconforming with town bylaws. He said the specific nonconformity is that the lot does not have enough frontage on Cox Street.

Members of the board were not certain whether Litchfield’s proposal met the criteria for a nonconforming use.

Board Chair Darja Nevits said that qualifying proposals typically include old foundations, which Litchfield had not

presented. She also said that the request to use a specific bylaw regarding continuing existing uses, buildings and structures to create structures in a new location is atypical.

“I cannot recall, and, maybe I’m forgetting something, a situation where somebody is using it to completely build new structures,” Nevits said.

The bylaw states that structures and premises that go against town bylaws are allowed to continue if they predate the bylaws. It allows the

board to grant special permits that can modify nonconforming structures.

Nevits added that creating condominiums at the site would also change the site to something “even more different.”

Litchfield said that he was not changing the nonconforming status of the lot at all, just moving the location of buildings on the lot.

He said he thought his proposal was clear-cut. He continued, however, saying that he realized the board was looking for much more information than he had prepared.

Litchfield represented himself in the meeting. He noted that, while he knows the board prefers to see applicants represented by attorneys, he had called three who were unresponsive.

Litchfield ultimately requested that the board grant a continuation until its next meeting on Aug. 11. They approved this unanimously, and Litchfield said he would try to find a lawyer who would respond to him.

Developer asks to amend Hudson’s retirement zoning district

By Stuart Foster Reporter HUDSON - Toll Brothers, the luxury home company that built the Enclave at Hudson, is seeking an amendment to the town’s Retirement Community Overlay Zoning District.

The proposed amendment, which Toll Brothers presented at a Planning Board meeting on July 19, would exclude the floor areas of finished basements from the living space restrictions of retirement communities.

“We’re asking for this language change because we think it makes a lot of sense.

It’s a clarification,” said Toll Brothers Senior Vice President Shawn Nuckolls. “We don’t think the Planning Board or the town should be restricting finished basements, and additionally it wasn’t a restriction on previous active adult communities.”

Currently dwellings in retirement communities must contain more than 1,000 square feet and less than 2,400 square feet of living area, and at least 66 percent of the living area in a unit must be on the first floor.

Nuckolls said the company is competing against resales in other Hudson communities —such as WestRidge and Sauta Farm — which provide more living area and have finished basements.

Nuckolls said that at the Enclave, an active adult community for people 55 and older, they offer six house plans for sale. Three of the plans are single-floor homes and have more than 1,700 square feet. In those, Toll Brothers can only partially finish the basements.

“We have this goofy layout because it’s an 1,800-squarefoot unit so we can finish approximately 600 square feet, and that’s it,” Nuckolls said.

The other three plans they offer are two-floor homes, which range from 2,150 to 2,389 square feet. For these houses, they cannot finish the basements at all.

Hudson Director of Planning and Community Development Kristina Johnson said that the town’s Building Commissioner, Jeffrey Wood, was now enforcing the provision after a long period where

it had not been imposed.

This restriction is limited to this retirement overlay district.

Planning Board member Darryl Filippi said that he thinks the purpose of the bylaw is to prevent the dwellings from having a third bedroom, which the district’s

septic system is not designed to handle.

“Even if you restrict the language that says you can finish the basement, but you can’t put a bedroom in there, somebody’s going to throw a pull-out couch and say it’s a bedroom at some point,” Filippi said.

Filippi said that even if the bylaw was changed to further clarify the restriction on bedrooms, it would be too difficult for the building inspector to enforce.

“If somebody finishes out and says it’s a study, that’s what the building inspector sees,” Filippi said. “The day

after the building inspector walks through, it’s a bedroom.”

Ultimately, Planning Board Chair Robert D’Amelio said the Planning Board would refer the matter to town counsel, the building commissioner and the Board of Health for their feedback.

Shrewsbury invites community to food truck festival

By Laura Hayes Managing Editor SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury’s food truck festival is inching closer, with community members invited to attend the event at Oak Middle School next month.

The festival, which is being sponsored by the Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation Department, will be held on Aug. 5 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. “[It] should be a fun night,” Director Angela Snell told the Community Advocate in May. There will be over 10 food trucks at the festival serving up entrees and sweet treats.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the food from the food trucks.

There will be music courtesy of DJ Larry Falk and a color station and lawn games.

This festival comes as Shrewsbury is in the midst of its second full year of holding its Food Truck Thursday events.

The general perception of the permitting process is that it is a way for the town to generate revenue; others feel it will only result in an increase in real estate taxes and add time to the process. Then there is the matter of whether you even need to pull a permit and who is responsible for doing so. Indeed,

the whole conversation around permitting is annoying. But if you educate yourself about the process and discover that taking out the proper permits will only benefit you in the long run, it makes total sense and will save you a lot of time and money down the road.

So how do you know whether your project requires a permit and what is the process of obtaining one? borough Building Commissioner Fred Lonardo said it best: “We’re here for life safety and for the benefit of the homeowners.”

Regarding which projects require permitting, Lonardo states “if you are adding something or opening something up, it most likely requires a permit.”

Pulling proper permits…and making sure they are closed out…will also save a lot of time and potentially prevent a real estate deal from blowing up when you do decide to sell down the road. Most reputable contractors will offer to pull all the necessary permits…and they do.

Whether the contractor actually schedules the final inspections and makes sure the permit is closed out is another thing. Attorney Robbins suggests that the homeowner withhold final payment until the proper documentation is in hand.

Attorney Robbins and Commissioner Lonardo discuss one last issue on the permitting subject…What’s on file at the Building Department? Each concur that town records are inconsistent. “Paperwork gets lost,” caution both Lonardo and Robbins who urge the homeowner to keep good records.

In the summarizing words of Attorney Robbins, “Pull the permit. Close the permit. Keep the permit.”

Ann M. Corio, 78 SHREWSBURY - Ann Marie Corio, 78, a lifelong Shrewsbury resident, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 19th, 2022, with the ones she loved gathered at her bedside.

Ann was born in Worcester, the daughter of Henry and Josephine (DeQuatro) Corio.

Ann is survived by her two sons, Gary M. Samela with whom she lived, and Brian Samela and his wife, Nancy of Altamont, NY; two grandchildren, Lindsay, and Stephen; Her longtime companion James A. Madaio; other extended family members and friends.

Paul M. Fernandes, 55 HUDSON - Paul M. Fernandes, 55, of Hudson, MA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on July 17, 2022 after a period of declining health.

Paul leaves his wife Michele L. (Collins) Fernandes; his son Noah B. Fernandes; his parents, Antonio and Maria (Figuerido) Fernandes; his brother, Mario Fernandes and his wife Toni along with 10 aunts and uncles, 24 cousins and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his Paternal Grandparents, Manuel and Anna Fernandes; his maternal grandparents Antonio and Ermelinda Figuerido; his father and mother-in-law Allan and Barbara Collins and two uncles.

Paul was born in Santa Maria, the Azores of Portugal.

He emigrated to the states at the age of 5 in 1971. Raised by his parents in Hudson he attended local schools and was a 1984 graduate of Hudson High School. Following high school he went on to Worcester State University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science. regular patrons can recall Paul’s talents at tossing the dough. He was currently employed at the UMASS Medical Center, University Campus in Worcester as a Nuclear Medicine Technician.

He was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson.

Paul enjoyed many activities throughout his life and most of all he cherished the many occasions he shared with his family.

He was very athletic participating in football and baseball during his years at Hudson High School. He was honored to be a part of two football super bowl teams elected into the Hudson High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was an avid fan of the New England Patriots always looking forward to another successful season. He remained very active throughout his life.

Running and spending time in the gym to keep fit were just a few activities he enjoyed in his spare time. Summers in Wells, ME at their summer home and relaxing days at Ogunquit Beach in Maine were special to all the family.

Paul will certainly be remembered as a husband, father, son, brother and friend who always would “do for others and not worry about himself”. He will certainly remain in the hearts of all who loved and knew him.

Mary’s beloved husband of 70 years, Victor J. Romans, died in 2018. She leaves two grandchildren, Andrew N. Belitsos and his wife Leah, of Eden, Vermont, and Demetra A. Diana G. Nolletti, 79 MARLBOROUGH - Diana Gail (Laney) Nolletti of Marlborough, MA passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning of July 17, 2022 at the age of 79. Born on November 15, 1942, she is survived by her husband of 52 years, Arthur E. Nolletti, Jr. and her beloved daughter, Alexandra Elizabeth Nolletti.

She was the eldest child of Alfred H. Laney and Lessie Lois (Brannon) Laney of El Dorado, Arkansas, and is survived by her siblings David Michael Laney of North Carolina and Janice Claire Watkins of Arkansas. She is also survived by her two nieces Laura Virginia Clopper of Georgia and Melanie Melissa Elliott of Oregon, and her nephew David Jacob Laney of Texas. She was predeceased by her nephew, Lawrence Wade Watkins.

A graduate of Centenary College in Louisiana, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree, She was then awarded a Woodrow Wilson Scholarship for graduate work in English Literature at the University of Wisconsin and served as a teaching assistant at the University, earning a Master’s Degree. It was there she met and married her future husband, Arthur. In

Ohio she taught one year at Cayahoga Community College.

Throughout their marriage, she and her husband shared many interests, rarely missing Sunday evening programs on WGBH, the public television station. She also was an avid reader of historical novels and mysteries and introduced Arthur to several her favorite authors. At Framingham State University, she was an assistant to Dr. Mary Prassard, after which she worked in the Admission’s office until she retired in June 2021.

She will be remembered for her kindness, loyalty, common sense, gentle humor, and steadfast nature. She never bore grudges and always sought the best in human nature.

She was employed as an assembler by Data General in Westborough, MA and later NEC located in Boxborough, MA until her retirement. She was a member of Saint Michael Parish in Hudson and also long-time member of the Hudson Portuguese Club.

Helena had so many interests throughout her life but her exquisite way of telling stories, especially her weekly readings to all the family which included poems, prayer verses, reading the Portuguese Newspaper, just to name a few, was a joy to all her family. She always looked forward to the family gathering every Sunday at her home for dinner and usually a few stories to entertain her family.

In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, writing, crocheting and knitting. For her family and friends and all who knew and loved her, she leaves the memory of a spirited strong personality and the most loving smile, her greatest gift to all of them.

“People find us from Boston, New Hampshire, Maine, and New York too,” says Brodeur.

“There are fewer shops doing what we do.”

One of his challenges is the difficulty in finding workers to keep pace with the demand for the shop’s services. He notes that the industry has been fractured since high tech has come in.

“Every five years, we lose more tradespeople,” says Brodeur. “We’re working with an older crew right now. It’s going to take a generation to revive the trades.”

At the vocational schools, there are not as many students going into trades like carpentry or electrical work.

“Since the pandemic, people have decided they want to work from home,” Brodeur said.

“They don’t want to come in to work. They don’t want to get their hands dirty.”

While Brodeur’s team is busy, he speaks of the falling-

off of quality of manufactured goods. A trend toward consumerism that started in the 1960’s was accelerated in the 2000’s. True appreciation for high-quality products has significantly decreased.

“As a society, we’ve become used to disposable furniture,” he said. “People buy from stores like IKEA, where furniture is mass-produced. People have been conditioned to get upgrades every six months. Quality is low, and if something wears out, people just throw it away and buy a new one.”

Coupled with this lack of appreciation for quality, Brodeur notes that since the pandemic, it is increasingly difficult to obtain high-quality materials.

“You pay a premium and wait a long time for them,” he said.

His crew has over 100 window sashes onsite for restoration, some going back as far as 300 years. These are from antique properties, some of which are on historic registers.

Brodeur remarks that sentiment is the one thing that keeps people tied to the restoration and refurbishing of older pieces.

Over 50% of his shop is made up of sentimental pieces.

Such items are loaded with stories. Brodeur speaks of an elderly woman whose friend passed away. She brought in her friend’s rocker to be refurbished.

It was not high-quality, but it held great emotional value for the woman.

“You can’t age-out sentiment,” he says. “It may be a teddy bear or a lamp or a rocker, or even a computerized avatar.

It’s human nature to hold deep emotional connections with pieces from their past. People still want to have roots. It’s the glue of society.”

The list is a collaboration between Money and The Leapfrog Group, which describes itself as a nonprofit watchdog organization that serves as a voice for health care consumers and purchasers. The list is designed to help inform people about which hospitals have the best value. It is the first list produced through this partnership.

Shamrocks beat Mill City Eagles 35-14

By Laura Hayes Managing Editor MARLBOROUGH - The Marlborough Shamrocks notched another win under their belt this past weekend.

Marlborough faced off against the Mill City Eagles on Saturday under the lights of Kelleher Field and emerged victorious, beating the Eagles 35-14.

With this win, the Shamrocks now stand 4-1 on the season.

This was the second time Marlborough has played the Eagles this season.

The Shamrocks last played Mill City on July 9 in Chelmsford, coming out on the winning side of a 29-18 score. At that time, offensive coordinator Harrison Ingels called it the “first real win of the season.”

That came after the Shamrocks lost their season opener to the Southern New England Admirals and later beat a shorthanded Brockton Bucks.

Now, the Marlborough Shamrocks will face off against the Granite State Destroyers at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire this Saturday.

“The defending, reigning, undisputed back 2 back National Champion Marlboro Shamrocks travel to Manchester to take on our Granite State Destroyers in a North Division battle!” the Destroyers wrote on Facebook.
