An Italian Classic Sangiovese (sahn-joh-veh-seh) is the most widely planted red wine grape in Italy. These grapes thrive in Central Italy where vines adapt readily to the soil and climate of the specific region in which they are located. The majority of grapes are used as the base for popular red blends such as Chianti. Variance in terroir and vintner choices account for the many different styles and flavor profiles of the wines. Generally, Sangiovese wines have a dominant cherry flavor that is nuanced with notes of berries and flowers. Wines from warmer areas tend to be high in alcohol and acidity, whereas those from cooler areas tend to develop powerful tannins. Pair these food-friendly wines with tomato-based dishes, roasted meats, steaks, and seafood. The wine department at JULIO’S LIQUORS carries over 3,000 labels from 16 different countries. Our Beer department contains one of the largest selections of microbrews, domestics, imports, Belgians and Trappist beers, totaling over 1,000 beers in stock! We have never heard of it. If you look it up on the internet, it’s shocking how bad it is,” Nancy said. Mike shared his thoughts on Jeff’s battle with Alport Syndrome, noting it’s a “hur dle he will overcome.”
Since Jeff was a child, Mike said he always had the selfdetermination to achieve his dreams. Now it is critical for Jeff to receive a kidney so he can achieve his dream of watching his daughter Spencer grow up.
Kidney transplant As he is 31-years-old and leads an active and healthy lifestyle, Jeff’s doctors are holding back on dialysis with the hope of Jeff receiving a kidney transplant soon. A transplant would save Jeff’s life, but the transplanted organ would only last a certain amount of time depending if it comes from a living donor, which could last 15 to 20 years, or a deceased donor, which could last 10 to 15 years. According to Jeff, his doc tors are trying to find him a kidney from a living donor, so he doesn’t have to undergo another surgery just about 10 years after receiving his first kidney transplant.
To help raise awareness of Jeff’s need for a living kidney donor, his mother Nancy and girlfriend Alissa created a Facebook page, which gained about 3,000 views the first week.Though many people vis ited the page, Jeff said some potential donors realized the rigor of the donation process and dropped out.
Now, there are only a hand ful of potential donors still interested.“There’s no hard feelings on that, obviously. That’s a ton to ask of someone,” he said. Mike said if his son received the transplant from a living do nor, he would be “overjoyed.”
“They both thrive off of each other and love each oth er. It’s a very special relation ship,” she said.
Nancy said Jeff and Spencer are each other’s “everything.”
“As to why the town should come together to help Jeff, my answer is very simple — be cause it’s the right thing to do!”
Fire De partment Chief David Parenti said he hopes Jeff receives the transplant soon.

Sunday alcohol sales at Westborough restaurants may head to Town Meeting
COMMUNITY NEWS Alcohol sales | from page 1 thing where we couldn’t do anything on Sundays,” said Select Board Chair Ian Johnson. According to Town Manager Kristi Williams, the town was approached by The Coop who asked if the license approved by the Select Board would al low the restaurant to open at 10 a.m. Sundays to serve alcohol.
“Currently it’s noon,” Wil liams said. “I know that there have been other restaurants in the past who have had this interest.”Tomake this change, Town Meeting would have to accept this section of the law. This section of the law spe cifically says that the local li censing authority that accepts it may authorize licensees to sell alcohol between 10 a.m. and noon on Sundays, the last Monday in May and Christmas Day or the following day when it falls on a Off-premiseSunday.alcohol licenses — such as those for package stores — already for sales at this time without a vote at Town Meeting, according to Williams.Williams was recommend ing that the Select Board place it on the warrant.

The Coop, which is a restau rant that specializes in wings and barbecue, officially opened its new Westborough location at 32 West Main Street in August.
“This past year, the district experienced an unprecedented and unanticipated outplace ment of eight students after the submission of the budget,” said Williams. A fourth article would use $357,000 from ambulance receipt reserves to replace an ambulance.Williams said this replace ment is on the town’s capital plan for fiscal year 2024, but it was coming early due to con cerns over the time to order an ambulance.TheSelect Board will be closing the warrant during their Sept. 27 meeting.

Experts Increase 2022 Home Price Projections | MyK CMAs the chart shows, most sources adjusted up, and now call for more appreciation in 2022 than they originally pro jected this January. But why are experts so confident the housing market will see ongo ing appreciation? It’s because of supply and demand in most markets. As Bankrate says: “After all, supplies of homes for sale remain near record lows. And while a jump in mortgage rates has damp ened demand somewhat, demand still outpaces supply, thanks to a combination of little new construction and strong household formation by large numbers of millen nials.”Knowing that experts fore cast home prices will continue

Developers are proposing a 190-unit affordable housing project on this site on Main Street.

104 Main Street from What is According to KIG Real Estate Founder Justin Krebs, they are proposing to construct 190 units on the approximately six-acre the develop ment would be a “first class building” marketed to fami lies and young profession als and include studio, onebedroom and two-bedroom apartments.Thesiteis currently used to store trucks that are out of op eration, and there are currently no active stormwater control systems, according to Krebs. Senior Project Manager of Embarc Design Steve Regal said he believes the developers are “lucky” because the hous ing production plan recognizes that there are not large tracts of land available for affordable housing in Shrewsbury. “This is available in an area where we don’t feel we are going to be very impactful to neighbors,” he added. The project would include a south facing courtyard with a pool, a fitness center, a club space and remote work spaces. Regal said they were hoping to use the two existing curb cuts onto North Quinsigamond Avenue. He said they “tried to maintain the existing vegeta tion as much as possible” as part of their plans. “We have spoken with the Department of Public Works related to the sewer capacity and other components. We feel like the project is viable, but there would be significantly more study on traffic, fiscal impacts, engineering, etc.,” said Krebs. Other projects in Shrewsbury The developers have also completed projects in Win chester, Scituate, Medway, Bridgewater, Framingham and Brighton.Though the plans for the units are not fully developed, the developers are proposing that the one bedroom apart ments include a larger living and dining room areas. The two bedroom apartments would in clude a living room and interior den. This configuration is based off their other developments. Krebs noted the den would not be a “suitable extra bed room.”“There’s no window, no closet and there aren’t any doors on them. We’re trying to address it to be a work office, not for somebody to say, ‘Oh I can slide another bedroom in’ Unless you’re an infant, you won’t be able to make your way around it if it is used as a bedroom,” he said. This is not the only proposed 40B project in Shrewsbury on the horizon. Earlier this sum mer, the selectmen signed a development agreement for a senior housing project on South Street.Krebs addressed concerns about the congestion this proj ect would add to Shrewsbury, in addition to the other 40B proj ects that are underway in town. “If you look at the state stats and the overall need, we are still 30,000–40,000 units below what we need in the suburbs,” he Assaid.part of the next steps for the project, Town Manager Kevin Mizikar said he believes the developers will request the Board of Selectmen to work with them in formally submit ting a LIP application.

Board member James Quinn said the contract for the project, which is to Aetna Bridge Company, will be paid for through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. Hud son has been allocated a total of $5.9 million in ARPA funds. Quinn, who is the only member of the board who had been inside the bridge’s culvert and seen the damaged section, said when the damage was discovered, the town was instructed to close the street. He said that Department of Public Works Director Eric Ryder convinced authorities to cover up the damaged section of the roadway instead. “I have to give Mr. Ryder a heck of a lot of credit for ar ranging to at least keep one side of the street open for us during construction, and to have kept the street open to begin with for all this time,” Quinn said. In a conversation with the Community Advocate, Ryder said that construction on the bridge was planned to start the Tuesday after Labor Day. The bridge’s eastbound lane will remain in normal service while the westbound lane will be detoured, he added.

“I can’t think of anything else that would make me feel more satisfied than being a fire fighter,” he said. “It’s a wonder ful profession. I’ve been doing it for 10 years.”
Under a bright red canopy, they welcomed new firefighters Jonathan Evangelou and Adonis Claderon and celebrated Bob Ljunggren, Adam Towner, Dave Muntz and Brendan Palumbo, who were all promoted to lieu tenant.Muntz said he is “extremely fortunate” to have joined the Shrewsbury Fire Department 10 years ago. “It truly is the best job in the world,” he said. “Every shift there are different challenges and something new to learn. I am very proud to have been promoted to lieutenant and with the support of my fellow firefighters and officers, I am looking forward to increasing my knowledge and skills within the fire service.”

The community celebrated the Firefighter Awards Ceremony last month.
“It’s nice to be recognized by the department. Everything we do is always a team sport, so I wouldn’t have been able to do any of the things I have without the help from all of the other guys,” Towner said. Chief Jim Vuona said the cer emony gives the fire department an opportunity to “recognize extraordinary effort and initia tive” taken by the firefighters. “I am proud of their efforts and I highly respect the profes sional manner in which these individuals conduct themselves on calls and within the commu nity,” said Vuona. “All firefight ers and public officials are held to a higher standard than the general public, and our award winners have shown them selves to be among the best of the best.”
Many firefighters received awards for their selfless work and dedication to the town: Shawn Green received the 2021 Outstanding Firefighter Award; Adam Towner received the 2021 Service and Achievement Award; and Ljunggren, Rory Ahern and Ben Gerber received the 2021 Life Saver Awards.
By Caroline Gordon Reporter SHREWSBURY - Residents gathered at the Shrewsbury Fire Department on Aug. 9 for the annual Firefighter Awards Ceremony, which is an event honoring the town’s firefighters.
Lifesaver Award Vuona, who spoke specifi cally about the 2021 Life Saver Award, said the people who were saved had stopped breath ing and were brought back to life thanks to the training, dedica tion and hands-on efforts of the firefighters. Ljunggren said he was in “the right spot at the right time.”
“Even though the accident didn’t occur in Shrewsbury, and I was not on duty, not stopping to help was not an option,” he said. “Even though I arrived first on scene, it was a total team ef fort with the Westborough Fire Department.”WhileAhern said it was nice to be recognized, he said saving a life was much more rewarding.

The Northborough Fire Department is eyeing a new home on West Main Street.
NORTHBOROUGH - The town is seeking residents to serve on an advisory committee charged with overseeing the design and construction of a new fire station. The Fire Station Building Committee will be made up of town officials – including a selectman, Financial Planning Committee member, Fire Chief David Parenti and an appoin tee of the fire department – and residents appointed by Town Administrator John Coderre. “We had a feasibility committee that ran its course,” Coderre said during the Aug. 15 Board of Selectmen meeting. “Now that we have completed that, the next phase is to move forward with a building com mittee.”Coderre said the town has been working closely with the party who is selling the pro posed site of the new fire sta tion at 61-65 West Main Street.

Over the last several months, the fire station project has come up at Board of Select menBackmeetings.inOctober, the select men held an executive session to discuss the purchase of real estate on Main Street for the fire station project. The West Main Street site used to be a gas station. In February, Coderre shared that there was some “signifi cant” contamination found on the property. As part of the purchase and sale of the prop erty, the seller had to complete remediation of the property. Coderre said one of the re quirements was that ground water testing needed to take place. Further, there needed to be two quarters of testing before the remediation was considered complete, he said. At that time, he said as soon as the town knew the groundwater testing was clear, the town could proceed with forming the building commit tee and issuing a request for proposals for owner’s project manager.“We’re waiting to get the final groundwater test for that parcel [and] make sure there’s no additional contamination,” Coderre said in August. “Looks like those are clear.” He said the town is working through reporting to the state Department of Environmental Protection.Anyresidents interested in serving on the Fire Station Building Committee should send a letter of interest and resume to the town adminis trator at 63 Main Street, North borough, MA 01532 or by email to 7.beborough.ma.us.townadmin@town.northLetterandresumesshouldreceivednolaterthanSept.

Among their tips to avoid the scam, Shrewsbury police suggested not providing the grandchild’s name and bank or credit card numbers before notifying family members of a suspicious call.
SHREWSBURY - The Shrews bury Police Department has recently detected an uptick of two scams occurring in both Shrewsbury and neighboring communities.Thefirstscam is when a scammer calls an elderly per son asking for money and claiming the scammer is some one the person knows, such as a grandchild. Shrewsbury police said the scammers are also posing as doctors or law enforcement officers stating the person’s grandchild has been in an Accordingaccident.tothe police de partment, the suspects will act like they know personal information about the victims, such as their names, the names of their children and grand children, phone numbers and addresses.Additionally, the scammers may claim that the victim’s grandchild or child was in volved in an OUI accident with injuries and need bail money. They may also identify themselves as assistant district attorneys and call from a few different phone numbers. The scammers may call back alleging someone died as a result of the crash and request additional bail money. As part of the scam, they will have the victim mail money to a specific address or send some one to their house to pick up the money, the department said. They may also instruct vic tims to go to the bank, deposit or withdraw large amounts of cash and not explain to the bank tellers why they are tak ing out money. To prevent others from catching onto the scam, the “grandchild” may also say they are in trouble and beg the grandparents not to tell any other family members, accord ing to the police department.
The scammers have used a method of spoofing the num ber of the department, making it appear as though it is from an official agency, according to police.Thesuspect will identify themselves as a law enforce ment officer, informing the victims that they have a war rant for their arrest or are in trouble. The scammer will ask the victim to transfer money to them.Ifanyone receives any calls from official numbers that they feel are suspicious, the Shrewsbury Police Department recommends hanging up and calling the department on its business line at 508-845-1212.

Keith’s Music will be moving to in Boylston next
BOYLSTON - Keith’s Music House announced big news recently: they will be moving to a new site at 220 East Temple Street in Boylston in early spring of 2023. “The new location is twice the size of the old one,” said owner Keith Lewis. “We’ll have six practice rooms, and we plan to put in a coffee shop and a stage for performances. We want this to be seen as a legitimate place for musicians to play.”When Lewis opened his music school in 2015, he had 10 students. The popularity of his school’s offerings is evident by its growth — they have steadily grown to 150 students throughout the school year, and 60 students in their sum mer“Weprogram.reallyserve two differ ent groups,” said Lewis. “We have our main group during the school year, and the kids enrolled in our summer Rock Sessions program.” A common thread, though, is that Keith’s Music House has served students of all abilities and has tailored its lessons to each individual student. “We have one student who is legally blind,” Lewis said. “He is one of the most talented kids I have come across. He plays everything. It’s like a su perpower. My daughter is in charge of our social media, and my son strings guitars. We’re all proud of this school.” Lewis spoke of his team as equal colleagues. “I don’t have anybody who works for me, they work with me,” said Lewis. “I couldn’t do what we do without them.”

So this is my first legitimate off-season with the kids. It’s been great,” he said.

“She gives us the best possi ble opportunities to be success ful — whether it’s equipment, access to facilities or practice time,” he DiCarlosaid.said like other WHS teams, football adds “a sense of community” to the school as students can participate them selves, or cheer on their peers. “Joe has been here for three years and he has worked hard to rebuild the program. Joe’s awesome,” she said. “Him and the kids have put in a lot of ef fort this pre-season and we are looking forward to seeing that on the field.”
Beveridge added, “Luke Had ley is a kid who leads by ex ample. He worked hard in the off-season. He’s a kid the other kids look up to because they see the work he has put in.”
The captains shared their excitement for the season. Grillo was looking forward to seeing the progress on the foot ball field as a result from their summer work, and Hadley said he was thrilled to “see the new physicality” the team achieved during the pre-season. Baublis said he was excited for the work and energy he was seeing during practice.“Everyone is excited to be here together and play football. I know I can trust my teammates because I see them putting in the work for us to become bet ter,” Baublis said. Support for the season Beveridge said that West borough High School Athletic Director Johanna DiCarlo makes sure the team has the necessary tools for a successful pre-season.
