Harvest season is in progress in many of the grape growing regions of the Northern Hemisphere and marks the culmination of back-breaking work in the vineyards. Local traditions associated with bringing in the harvest are particularly strong in France. There the vehicle transporting the last grapes to the winery is decorated with flowers and accompanied by much joviality and fanfare. For consumers, the completion of harvesting signals the beginning of production of new batches of wines that will eventually be released for wine enthusiasts to enjoy. Wine festivals that showcase both old and new wines are open to the public (usually for a fee) and are brimming with tasty food options and lively music.

Sincerely, Judy Powell Westborough To the Editor: The restart of the North borough Republican Town Committee almost escaped my notice. While I support our two-party system, I have to question whether this restart is a good thing: it will depend on the direction the local com mittee takes. Will it follow the lead of the GOP gubernatorial candidate, Geoff Diehl, and sign on to his recent statement

“It’s not going to do the job we need it to do if we don’t have the right people,” Wixted said. She proposed the candi dates to be “on hold,” and she offered to recruit applicants.

In April, the selectmen were split on who to appoint to the ZBA with Rogers and Perreault voting for incumbent Richard Rand and Selectman Julianne Hirsh and Wixted voting for KevinBecauseWyrsch.the selectmen did not appoint a member, that seat was considered vacant, leading to another round of interviews.TheInterview Subcommit tee interviewed Cieslica, Rand, Wyrsch, Jeffrey Gribouski and TimFollowingKaelin. Cieslica’s nomi nation, Perreault said from May 2021 to June 2022, the ZBA had 12 meetings. He said she was on time, in view, fully attentive and not distracted during five of the meetings. “I would argue that five what I would consider to be reliable and fully attentive meetings out of 12 is not a par ticularly strong recommenda tion to advance an alternate member to a voting member’s seat,” he said. He said it was a responsibil ity of the Board of Selectmen to make sure that members ap pointed to the ZBA are able to make the commitment with out tardiness or distractions.

Perreault said Rand demon strated a “very consistent and dependable” record of on-time and on-video appearance. Hirsh called it a “slippery slope” to say someone is dis tracted during a meeting. Wixted said that an alternate on a committee may not be called upon to vote.

At the time, Selectmen Jason Perreault and Scott Rogers voiced hesitancy, noting that the openings were posted, and the applicants applied in good faith and had expertise. When the appointments re turned before the selectmen on Aug. 15, Rogers voiced concerns about comments that they didn’t have “the right” candi dates for the process and that board members would recruit candidates, deliberate, make recommendations and ulti mately appoint a candidate. He was concerned that it set a “bad look” for the Interview Subcommittee, selectmen and the overall process. Rogers asked that the select men be careful in the language they used and discussing the reasons why the first pool was thought to be insufficient.

“Having been that mom, I never volunteered for anything when I was that mom unless it had to do with the school, unless it had to do with my children because I didn’t think I could manage it,” she said. Chair Mitch Cohen suggest ed that as the selectmen review the interview process, they add expectations on how the member conducts themselves during a remote meeting.

“I will take your point that there are situations that could be a little different, but, to me, that doesn’t disqualify an ap plicant,” he said.

Earlier this year, the town established a permanent Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee to be made up of nine mem bers, including six at-large members.OnMay 23, the selectmen discussed applicants to be ap pointed to the committee, and Selectman Kristen Wixted not ed that there weren’t enough applicants to fill the six at-large spaces.“We have some really great people, and I really appreciate [that] they all put their hats in ring,” Wixted said. “But we have nobody who’s a Black person. We have nobody who’s from the Indian community in Northborough.”Shenotedthat those are both “fairly good-size com munities” in town.

Northborough Town Hall stands at 63 Main Street.

“It’s very easy to get into language that becomes prob lematic and misunderstood and, in some cases, establish criteria that is illegal,” Rogers said.Wixted responded that the charge for the committee calls for members who are diverse and belong to underrepre sented groups to the greatest extent possible under repre sented groups to the greatest extent possible. However, all of the initial round of applicants weren’t all members of underrepresented groups, she said. While she said she recruited applicants, Wixted said it was “really impossible” to twist a person’s arm to apply to vol unteer for a ma’sAshishCynthialissaappointedUltimately,committee.theselectmenSeiraShalton,MeDiglio,MariamIbrahimi,Moore,YongTanandVerma.RogersvotedagainstVerappointment.

SHREWSBURY - Residents voiced concerns about a pro posed nearly 200-unit 55+ housing development on South Street during a Zoning Board of Appeals meeting Aug. 29. The developer, Greystar De velopment, presented the proj ect, titled “Album Shrewsbury,” which would be developed under the state affordable hous ing statute Chapter 40B, to the board.Resident David Singer voiced concerns about traffic, noting the development on the nearby Centech Park North campus. Singer said he and his family have lived on South Street for 30 years, and they have seen it grow from “cows next door to warehouse facilities to now a 196-unit“Southcomplex.”Streetisan extremely narrow and dangerous road with no speed limit. It’s a dan gerous place to be walking. It’s a dangerous place to be driving. If they’re elderly [the tenants], there will be a lot of extra traf fic from those coming to visit,” Singer said. He added, “If anyone is famil iar with my property, we have put up some rock barriers that are constantly getting hit. I lose count of the hubcaps, car parts and little pieces of glass. It’s a very dangerous area.” Album Shrewsbury would be a 40B project According to Massachusetts State Law, in each municipality, at least 10% of the housing stock must be affordable. The current stock in Shrewsbury is 6.42% Chapter 40B is a state statute that allows the local zoning boards of appeals to approve af fordable housing developments under flexible rules if at least 25% of the units provide longterm affordability restrictions.

Project Manager Phil Cor deiro, of Allen & Major Associ ates, said Album Shrewsbury would include a pool and a “very large amenity based” courtyard, which could include outdoor sitting spaces, a gardening space and a pickleball court. In order to preserve the trees and wetlands on the property, Cordeiro said the developers would aim to focus the project in an area that has previously been“Bydisturbed.focusing the develop ment to the front, we are able to utilize the land area that is cur rently farmed and then create the terracing for this project,” he said.Thefront half on Chestnut Street would be a four-story building, and the back half would be five, according to Cordeiro.Henoted that half of the site would be developed and the other half would remain natural, allowing for residents a vista view over the rear of the property. By positioning the develop ment that way, the wetland resource area, which is located at the bottom of the hill, would not be altered, Cordeiro said. ‘She can make my life very difficult’ Dottie Jean’s Pet Resort and Daycare Center Nancy Bradley said she understands she is un able to stop the project. How ever, she asked the developers to inform the tenants of her pet daycare so they know who lives next door. “I am very, very concerned that Jane Doe, lying by her pool, hears my boarding dogs bark ing,” Bradley said. “She can’t do anything to me because I am permitted, but she can make my life very difficult.” Greystar’s Chris Legocki said that part of the development process is to conduct an acous tical survey of the site, which is a method to determine what barriers must be added to the site to reduce noise. “Our interests are aligned. NOTRE DAME LONG TERM CARE CENTER offers assisted living, long term care and rehabilitation, hospice care, and pediatric palliative care. To learn more, please call (508) 852-3011. You can also schedule a tour of our facilities at 559 Plantation Street.

One of the most important things we can do to improve the lives of our elderly loved ones is finding them an excellent home care aid. To begin, determine whether home healthcare itself is enough to meet the needs of your loved one. Once you have done so and it is time to start interviewing, search for an agency that includes a Patient’s Bill of Rights or similar document that lays out the expectation of care. The agency should be licensed by your state, and ideally, has been around long enough to provide many, many references. Ask about employee back ground checks, and be sure the agency’s range of care will meet your future needs as well. All eldercare services are local and services can vary widely from state to state and region to region. If you are caring for a senior but do not live nearby, make sure you look for re sources in the state or area where your loved one lives.

Once the rock is removed, Scott said there would be a tem porary sediment basin to run stormwater runoff around the site and a second basin to cap ture any sediment that makes its way through the wetland system.Aspart of their plans, Scott said the 50 feet outside of the wetland would be reforested.

Now, they were seeking an earth moving permit to remove the rocks and earth that had been stockpiled on the western edge of the wetland system.

“The groundwater’s there that the wetlands should re vegetate itself provided that it doesn’t continue to see a lot of stormwater flowing through it from the north,” Scott said in June.InAugust, Scott said once the buffer and the wetland systems were stabilized, the basins would be removed to allow water to flow naturally through the Silverbergsite.said he would lean toward recommenda tions from the Conservation Commission and engineering department.Thehearing was continued until Sept. 20.

Wetlands cleared on Gleason Street property in Westborough

Brian Ward responded that while crews were clear cutting, they were using large machines. “There were machines in there that could probably cut three to four acres in a day,” Ward said. He continued, “I should have probably been there. We made a mistake, and we want to correct it. Going forward, I’m going to make sure that I’m there and something like this doesn’t happen again.” In August, Scott said an en forcement order was issued. They began developing plans to restore the wetlands, which Scott said was approved by the Conservation Commission.

WESTBOROUGH - Plans that would allow for the restoration of wetlands that were cleared and stripped of their topsoil were presented to the Planning Board on Aug 23. The applicant is requesting an earth moving permit. “I would prefer to focus on the remedy rather than the activity that got us here,” said Chair Mark Silverberg. “But it’s frustrating for me. Everybody in town has the same rules, and as much as I want the landowner to maximize value from their prop erty, I find it hard to believe that this kind of activity got this far. I’m a little disappointed in that.” What happened The Planning Board first met informally with the applicants on June 28. The property is located at 25 Gleason Street and is about 55 acres. It sits near the Westbor ough and Shrewsbury town line and abuts the Westborough Vil lage and the Boroughs Family BranchSpecifically,YMCA. the Planning Board was looking at work that had been done in the northwest corner of the Accordingproperty.toLand Design Collaborative’s Mike Scott, the Ward family had long used the lower portion of the site near Gleason and a portion in the back of the property to pro cess, remove and sell earthen materials.Abouttwo years ago, a por tion of the property had been cleared without permits from the Planning Board or Conser vationDuringCommission.theinformal meeting with the Planning Board, Scott said crews picked rocks off a slope and stockpiled them at the bottom of the hill. “Eventually, there was a determination made that they didn’t have permission to do that from this board, and they didn’t obviously have permis sion from the Conservation Commission,” Scott said. In June, Planning Board member Peter Bouchard asked how this occurred.

SHREWSBURY - With Spirit of Shrewsbury right around the corner, Fran and Judy Polito have been named the grand marshals.Although the Politos were initially hesitant when Presi dent Maria Smith called, Fran later agreed. “I agreed because I thought maybe this is something the family wanted to remember,” Fran said. “But as for myself, I’m not one to be in any spotlight. I don’t like accolades. I just like to do my job and get along with people and make someone else’s lifeJudybetter.”said it was “quite an honor” for them. “You live your life all these years, and it’s almost a culmina tion of what you’ve done … and where you’ve been,” Fran said. “I think it’s a privilege that the town would recognize us.” A family legacy Fran and Judy have been married 59 years. Generations of their family have lived and served the town. Judy’s father served on the School Committee and with SELCO. Their daughter, Karyn, served as a Town Meeting Member, Selectman and Zoning Board of Appeals member before she joined the House of Representa tives and is now Lt. Governor. Judy and several other fam ily members are also Town Meeting members. Their son, Kenny, is a member of the Lake Quinsigamond Commission and Conservation Commis sion.Fran served on the Finance Committee.“Wehad a great crew,” Fran said. “It was a privilege to un derstand all of the funding and every direction it was targeted to.”He said Richard Carney was Newellactingbecomeschief Newell, who graduated from Stonehill College, has been a member of the Southborough Police Department for over 20 years.“It’s a great department, a great town. Newell said he would hold a department meeting and hold individual meetings with the officers to discuss expectations and plans for the department.

Newell served as sergeant for 15 years before he was pro moted to a lieutenant. He was named acting chief following the departure of former chief Kenneth Paulhus after he had been placed on leave.

Newell said his entire career has been preparing him for this job, though he noted there will be a learning curve for some of the other committees he hadn’t had access to in his previous role, such as the Capital Plan ning Committee. “I have people I can rely on and I can go to if I need help with that,” Newell said.

Looking back on their work in the town, Fran said he likes to ride around and look at some of the projects they have been involved with, knowing how and when they were built and that they will always be there. That includes Quinsigamond Shores, Hills Farm Industrial Park where Fran’s business, J.A. Polito & Sons Inc., is located and homes on Coachman Ridge. Judy was also on a commit tee to raise funds for the Senior Center, which they later placed a plaque on the wall for the room where the center holds its activities.“That was something that I felt very strongly about,” she said.Judy was also involved in the Spirit of Shrewsbury parade and was the voice of the parade as its commentator.Whenasked what it was like to go from working on the parade to being grand marshal, Judy said, “I can’t believe that anybody wanted us to do that, but I’m very honored.” Judy said she was looking forward to the residents com ing together as a community to celebrate Shrewsbury. “I think our community has gone through a major transition. We have all walks of life in this town now,” Fran said. “I think … a parade could be the cata lyst to bring everyone together because we’re all equal. I think we need more camaraderie and more understanding of where we all stand because our town is more diverse today.” The festival will be held Sept. 24 to 25 and marks its 26th an niversary.Thisyear, the festival will be back in full force and in person. The parade will be returning, and new this year will be a dog festival.Formore information, https://spiritofshrewsbury.org.visit

This type of treatment does everything that acupuncture does except that we use more gentle, non-insertive techniques to stimulate the acupuncture points. Using acupressure tools, laser pens, gentle e-stim, magnets and pressseeds, we can just as effectively support the healing of the 10 and under crowd! We can also see kids older than this for non-insertive treatments if they are not ready for the acupuncture experience. When they are ready many of these young people are also excited and eager to try the traditional acupuncture points. We call them ‘taps’ to help take away the stigma of needles. I’m an early to bed and rise guy, and I’ll often drop in early before the dinner rush, and inevitably end up talking real estate with someone. Real es tate is something we all share… Once someone has my ear, they’ll often lean in and ask me in a lowered, conspirato rial tone of voice…. “When is the housing market going to crash?” And why wouldn’t they, with all the housing stuff in the news creating FUD…. fear, uncertainty and doubt. Long-term readers know I worked for years at Fidelity Investments, and Fidelity re ally reinforced with their em ployees not to time the market and to take the long view. From that perspective, real estate is a great investment – over time it goes up. That said, I didn’t buy my home as an investment per se. I do things at my house to increase my enjoyment (like painting the inside of my garage (pro tip – use exte rior paint)). A painted garage makes me happy….and does little to increase my home’s value.I’m not seeing a crash (er, major market shift) in the fore seeable future. The rapidly ris ing interest rates on homes did have some touching the brakes for a minute…as does any rapid change (stock market, world turmoil,First-timeetc.).buyers are out in droves because they are tired of living in their parents’ base ment. Housing inventories are up…compared to recent mem ory…and are still below preCovid levels – during Covid not as much building took place. Home inspections are back, and I welcome this knowl edgeable extra set of eyes. We still see multiple offers….just not crazy times. Step one for a buyer is getting financing in place, assuming you are not paying cash. Understanding the financial strength of your mortgage company is impor tant as some smaller players are struggling to make it. Sellers are needing to reset their expectations. A house selling overnight in February 2022 for cash, no inspections, and no contingencies is not a good comparison for this market. Sorry, that ship sailed. You can still get a fair price for your home provided the home is priced accurately…. and at this time listings on the market need to be included in the analysis. That’s where a Realtor® can help….for pricing a home correctly and for input to anWhileoffer.I’m not sensing a major market shift (i.e.: crash) we are in a period of market turbulence. We’ve seen tur bulence before and will again. No need for FUD. This is where working with a solid team with deep resources for your specific situation can make a huge dif ference. Here is free app for your phone/tablet tied directly to the MLS giveyourEstate.”TV830snap.com/Gary-Kelley.https://www.homeGaryisheardonWCRNAMand/orseenonWMCT-discussing“AllThingsRealIfyouneedadviceonsellinghomeorbuyinganewone,usacallat508-733-6005.

There’s a place in Marlborough called Double T’s Tavern. It’s the epitome of the hole-in-the-wall pub. The owner Tom is a friend, and his son TJ (the chef and the other T in Double T’s) bought his house with our help. Double T’s is comfortable and unassuming.
