COVID-19 restrictions to end, region celebrates By Sara Brown Contributing Writer

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer

REGION - Area communities rejoiced last week as Gov. Charlie Baker announced an end to remaining COVID-19 restrictions more than a year after the pandemic shut down much of public life. Baker indeed announced that all COVID-19 restrictions in Massachusetts, including the state’s mask mandate, will be lifted on May 29. As capacity limits will end, this also means parts of municipal governments that have operated remotely since last March may soon get to reconvene in person. “It’s going to feel very weird to go from meeting in these Brady Bunch squares to meeting in person,” said Southborough Town Administrator Mark Purple during a May 18 selectmen meeting. Purple said his town is trying to develop a way to go hybrid, so people can be in person while others can still meet online with them if they are more comfortable with that option instead. The town is making sure they have the needed technology for this. “It’s going to be surreal,” said Purple. Shortly before Baker’s announcement, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also declared that, in most situations, fully vaccinated Americans do not have to wear masks indoors or outdoors. After discussion, flags and signs will be allowed in rotary to honor veterans

Doing our part to support local business.

WESTBOROUGH – Westborough’s rotary will feature both flags and signs to honor veterans on three national holidays after the Board of Selectmen agreed, via a 4-1 vote, to make an exception to a longstanding policy. The action occurred at the May 11 meeting following a request from Patrick Tracey, co-chair of the Westborough Veterans Advisory board. He asked selectmen to reconsider an earlier denial to plant the signage honoring veterans in conjunction with the flags on Memorial Day, July 4 and Veterans Day. He said the dual displays are important to not only the veterans but to the community as well. He said the flags and signs are “a visual recognition of the service and sacrifice” of veterans and their families. Although selectmen earlier offered suggestions for other spots to put the signs, Tracey maintained that the rotary is the best place because it is a high traffic area. He said that the installation could act as a “teaching mechanism” for youth to learn about the sacrifices made by veterans on behalf of the country.
