I never stop marketing the store and exposing it to new markets. In 2018 I was recognized by the industry magazine, Market Watch as the “Marketer of the Year” and in 2019 we were named a Whisky icon store by Whisky Magazine as the best single location Whisky Store in the country. But beyond that, I am passionate about the culture we have created and I plan to keep building on it...it’s not unusual for us to get a large number of people visiting us weekly from adjoining states or even hundreds of miles away. I always want people to realize what a true “destination store” they have right in their own back yard.

Since purchasing the business, I’ve had a vision to create something that is so much more than a retail store. I view the store as a venue to provide education, build relationships and create a culture around the products we carry. People don’t realize that we are one of the leading liquor retailers in the nation and much of that is due to the way we connect with our customers and vendors.

What products do you think are going to really grow in popularity?

Specialty foods, accessories and an extensive wine selection, including a tasting room.

It has something to do with a maturing of tastes. As people mature they start to look for products that have a history and a culture behind them. Whiskey culture is a fascinating world and I have gone to great lengths to become an expert in the field. People with an interest in whiskey would be interested to know that I have been inducted into the Keeper of the Quaich Society in Scotland, one of whisky’s highest honors. I also started a group for aficionados known as the Loch and Key Society. Those interested should visit our website at www.lochandkey.com.

You seem to be interested in partnering with others in the industry...why is that?

In keeping with the theme of collaboration and education, we partner with many of our vendors. In some cases it’s to educate our customers, in others it’s an opportunity to bring forth rare or specialty products not generally available. In one recent initiative we are partnering with a number of wine producers to create signature wines exclusive to our store. Keep in mind, these are not just relabeled as many stores do...these are our unique, exclusive wines.

Ryan Maloney, Owner of Julio’s Liquors, Westborough

Julio’s Liquors is a very unique store. What is your vision for it?

The growth in specialty whiskies and craft brews has been nothing short of spectacular. We are the largest sellers of both types of products in the area. Now, we are looking at “Craft Spirits” as the potential booming market. No matter what products come along, it is our goal to be the educational source that allows our customers to be more knowledgeable about the products they buy.

How do you account for the popularity of specialized whiskies?

Do you see growth in the craft beer market?

COMMUNITY ADVOCATE • BUSINESS GUIDE • Friday, October 25, 2019 • 3

Julio’s is really known as a regional destination ...how did you become a leader?

Oh for sure. Currently we carry about 2,000 craft beers but there are new ones coming online weekly. One of the new trends in micro brewing is “hyper-local” with beers being produced in your own town or very close by. We plan to be the “go to” place in the Northeast for craft beer selection and education.

Both Diane and Michelle agree that through 62 years in busi ness, dancers have come and gone but as educators one of the most rewarding moments is when a former student brings their child to study at the Dance Center. It brings back beautiful mem ories and provides a tremendous sense of pride and accomplish ment in fostering a passion for dance.

Business hours: Monday-Friday 4-9p.m. Tuesday 9-11a.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Diane Cournoyer Dance Center was established in Northborough in 1965. With a love and passion for the art, Diane started teaching neighborhood students in the basement of her home. As the studio grew, so did her need for a bigger space. She moved the studio to the First Parish Unitarian Church in Northborough and then to 329 West Main St., where it remained for 20 years. The dance center just moved to a beautiful newly renovated space at 386 West Main St. (Pendleton Square) in Northborough.

Diane’s daughter Michelle, who began teaching at age 14, came on full time in 1990 and has been running the family business with Diane ever since. The studio also has five additional dance teachers, each and every one of them having the same passion and love for dance as the Cournoyers.

Cyprian Keyes Golf Club has built a repu tation as one of the top places in the region to hold golf outings, meetings, social events and fundraisers. The club — conveniently located just off Route 140 in Boylston, one mile from Route 290 —hosts outings and events seven days a week, accommodating from 2 to 250 people or more.

A view from the restaurant patio of a beautiful sunset over the 18th green

Like many of Central Massachusetts golf establishments, Cyprian Keyes must fol low Mother Nature’s guidelines. When the snow finally falls, the courses close for the season and the restaurant hours change as well.  However, Cyprian Keyes hosts social and corporate events and offers some great weekly dining options year-round to escape theEverycold. Friday Night, Cyprian’s Restaurant has an all-you-can-eat Prime Rib Buffet that includes much more than just Prime Rib –multiple entrees, salad, dessert, and more

“We pride ourselves on running an oper ation where business people feel comfortable entertaining clients and people enjoy enter taining their friends and family,” Cyprian Keyes Golf Club’s General Manager, David FremOpenedsays.

“Due to the quality of our golf course and food we offer, many people think we are a private club,” Frem says.  “That could not be further from the truth, we are open to the public in everything we do. We welcome ev eryone, whether they are here to play golf, en joy a drink and live music during the summer on our patio, or plan an event.”

Cyprian Keyes is more than just a golf course, though. It features a golf school, golf shop, driving range, and the Cyprian Fitting Center.  The colonial-style clubhouse fea tures five function rooms – one of which is a one-of-a-kind 19th-century English Mu sic Room with beautiful windows and a high ceiling - and a casual, yet upscale, restaurant. All rooms, including Cyprian’s Restaurant, have outdoor access via a patio or deck, as well as breathtaking views of the course and surrounding countryside.

in 1997, Cyprian Keyes offers 27 holes of golf — an award-winning 18-hole championship course and perhaps the fin est par-3 course in the state. The club offers memberships for adults and juniors who want to play regularly and for those just learning to enjoy the game, they offer a Junior Golf school in the summer. The par-3 course — impeccably manicured and with large greens — is a favorite of both families and kids and is also a tremendous place for low handicap pers to practice their irons and short game.

Cyprian Keyes Golf Club is a great des tination for everything from golf outings to wedding receptions, precision club fittings to business meetings, dinner to golf lessons and everything in between. At Cyprian Keyes you can experience it all and as they say “enjoy the experience”

I first learned of Children’s Orchard years ago when I was introduced to the store by a friend. As a wife and mother of three children, I could ap preciate the idea of buying and selling gently used children’s items. Plus, as someone who cares deeply about envi ronmental protection, I really liked the idea of recycling these perfectly good items so they stay out of the landfill and let others enjoy them.

Fitts Insurance is a third-generation family-owned insurance agency. We’ve grown over the years and we have embraced technology and all the ways it helps us work more efficiently. But we’ve never lost sight of our true purpose, the protection of our clients. We take the necessary time to listen to our clients and discuss options for properly insuring their homes, cars, boats, businesses and lives. By representing many of the best insurers in Massachusetts, we can properly insure our clients while making sure the premiums they pay are competitive. We don’t promise to be the least expensive, but it’s nice that so often we are. It seems today that speed and efficiency are often ranked higher than quality. In some industries this may be acceptable, but when it comes to financial protection, speed must not be valued above caution.

With more than 15 years in the construc tion industry and 25 years manage ment experience, we are excited to be part of the growing construction industry in Central Mass. This sum mer we incorporated the business as a women-owned business, so if that is important to you, as it is to us, we look forward to working with you. We know the name is unique; Mike really has a mohawk, and we capital ized the MO as it’s Mike’s initials.
