Law Office of Carolyn R. Spring Law office specializing in estate planning for all ages, elder law, and probate BACKGROUND: Cornell University 1980, Boston College Law School 1983, Certified Financial Planner degree 1993

planning and the like. Several attorneys told her what to do and they all said different things. She was overwhelmed. I believe that I am the type of attorney who will take the time to explain things to my clients so they understand their estate plan and also understand what their estate planning documents say before they sign them. I approach each client with compassion as well. Many people are afraid to do a Will, thinking that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Those clients need extra patience, understanding and time.

In considering estate planning, the documents that everyone needs at a minimum are a Will, a Power of Attorney, and a Health Care Proxy. Most people don’t know that a Power of Attorney names someone to manage your finances if you cannot do so and that it ends when you die. It is a very powerful document. If a person has minor children, then they will also need some type of Trust to go along with the Will since minors cannot be in control of their own money.

MEDIA: For the past several years, I have been doing a show for Westborough TV called “Law For Your Life.” All of the shows can be accessed online at http://westboroughtelevision.com/wtv.

Why I chose these areas of law to specialize in: Initially, I chose estate planning since I liked the area of law, the hours were flexible, and I could see clients in the evening after my children had gone to bed. I continued to specialize in this area after my children had grown not only because I liked it, but also because I saw a need. When my mother was widowed in her early 60s she knew nothing about finances, estate

She’s professional, she’s smart, she knows what to look for, she has the experience to advise you, she’s respected by other brokers, and is so enjoyable to work with. We submitted multiple offers on houses and I always felt like we had the advantage with Lee on our side. She was a true partner. I am very detail oriented myself and was blown away by Lee. She always thought of everything, was proactive, and incredibly responsive. I give her my highest recommendation.” Shannon Creedon, Shrewsbury “While I hadn’t worked with Lee before, I knew her personally and was very confident that she would be a great resource in connecting us with the right home. Forward thinking, community-minded

Photos/submitted

Left photo: Linda Townsend, the owner of Release Well-Being Center poses for a photo with Joe Sova, Avidia Senior Vice President and Senior Commercial Loan Officer. The center, located in Westborough, is due to open in late 2016. Avidia is a preferred Small Business Administration lender. Right photo: Avidia and local officials celebrate the ground breaking for the bank’s new state-of-the art facility in Framingham.

Business description/history: Avidia Bank was formed through a merger of Westborough Bank and Hudson Savings in 2007. Each bank was founded in 1869 so Avidia has its roots firmly grounded locally and knows much about community outreach and giving back. During the past 10 years, Avidia Bank has been profiled in various trade and local publications for their dynamic social media presence and for the innovative expansion of their product and service offerings, from the introduction of “cardless” ATM withdrawals and Avidia Pay to a state-of-the-art mobile banking experience. What makes your company a good choice to do business with? Although Avidia has evolved for individuals and families, the growth in business products and services is in a league of its own. During the past couple of years, Avidia Bank has begun offering the option for businesses to apply online for financing, has become a preferred Small Business Administration lender, and has initiated Avidia Pay, the bank’s robust business payment solution platform. In addition, Avidia has launched a Solar Lending program and another for condo association lending. Always interested in creating mutually beneficial partnerships, Avidia has forged a relationship with the New England Section of the Professional Golfers’ Association and has created a co-branded credit card offering with the high profile organization. What are some of your more innovative programs? The Avidia Smarties is the official brand ambassador team for Avidia Bank. The team’s goals include sharing news about Avidia’s community events on social media, building financial literacy and brand awareness. In less than a year, the Avidia Smarties have created a following of over 6,000 on social media and that number continues to grow. In addition, they have been recognized nationally as thought leaders in the financial technology and bank marketing industries. From a partnership with a Boston-based solar energy firm, Avidia Bank is now able to offer loans for solar power and can facilitate the installation for

consumers and businesses. This provides an opportunity to offer a trusted access to alternative energy sources in the form of solar power. In addition to Apple Pay and a revamped mobile platform, the bank has begun offering Android Pay and Samsung Pay to accommodate the changing needs of its customers. Are there any expansion plans in the works? Avidia’s reach is expanding with the opening of our Financial Center in Hudson in late 2016 which will house various business lines including mortgage lending, commercial and investment services. In addition, the bank will be headed east into Framingham with a new retail space as well as residential lending and commercial services teams in mid-2017. Expanding our presence in the MetroWest area not only means bringing more products and services into more households and businesses, it also includes extending the bank’s charitable giving and employee volunteerism into Framingham and surrounding communities. What can you tell us about your staff? For our employees, we want to be known as an ideal place to build a career and a place where one can make a difference. Our people are passionate about our values and understand the positive impact that we can have on our communities. We feel privileged to be volunteering side by side with neighbors who understand that strong communities make for better business and lift our quality of life. Why is Avidia thriving? We feel that we are well-positioned to serve our customers by having the size and financial strength to reinvest in new products and services, while remaining responsive to local needs. We are a locally-based, mutual institution with no stockholders, and therefore we are able to use our profits to support our mission to serve our customers and the communities in which they live and work.

Modern Dentistry What is the history of Modern Dentistry? Modern Dentistry of Shrewsbury has been a local family practice for over 50 years and has served generations of families in Shrewsbury and surrounding communities. In 2004, the office was moved to its current location and modernized to live up to its current name. It expanded in 2012 to accommodate the growing needs of its patients. Modern Dentistry has now grown to become a top-notch multi-specialty practice where most dental needs can be taken care of under one roof. This past summer, Dr. Todd Pizzi and the practice welcomed two new specialists to continue the focus on family and cosmetic dental care, but also to provide services for patients who present with more complex and advanced dental needs than what the average dental practice can offer. What special skills does Dr. Mehdi bring to the practice? Dr. Mehdi Karimipour, also known by his colleagues and patients as “Dr. Mehdi,” earned a masters in dental materials, and two additional degrees in prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthodontics, all from the University of Birmingham, Ala. In other words, he is still a family and cosmetic general dentist but has four more years of specialty training. As a Prosthodontist, Dr. Mehdi has the technical skills to treat and manage complex dental and facial problems, including cosmetics, dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, temporomandibular disorders, sleep apnea, and more. As a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist, he can also treat patients with defects or disabilities of the face and jaw (whether born, developed, diseased from cancer, or trauma) by providing prostheses to re-establish esthetics and function. Prior to becoming a dual-specialist, Dr. Mehdi earned his dental

degree from Tufts University where he also met his wife, Dr. YiChen Wei. What special skills does Dr. Wei bring to the practice? Dr. YiChen Wei is an endodontist, which is a specialist dedicated to saving teeth with root canals. Prior to becoming an endodontist, Dr. Wei completed a general practice residency at Stony Brook Hospital in Long Island, N.Y., and worked as a general dentist for three years in Alabama. She returned to Tufts for her specialty degree. Dr. Wei uses an operating microscope, ultrasonic instrumentation, and fiber optics, to provide optimal care for her patients. What type of longevity is there with the staff members? Modern Dentistry has a long history of highly trained professionals who are committed to exemplary dentistry. Their lead dental assistant, Cherilyn Grampetro, explained, “I’m amazed at how much Modern Dentistry has evolved. I’ve been blessed with good work experience, which has allowed me to become one of the best at my trade. I’m proud to say that I’ve been with Modern Dentistry for more than 10 years.” Compassion, integrity and quality patient education are the cornerstones of this dental practice. What is the key to staying on the cutting edge of dentistry? Drs. Mehdi and Wei always stay current in their field through continuing education and they are active members of their respective specialty organizations. Both specialists teach at Tufts and have always felt it is important to give back to the educational community. Dr. Mehdi is also a volunteer at the Veterans Affair Hospital. Both Drs. Mehdi and Wei previously went to undergraduate college in southern California. They have put down their roots in Massachusetts and now have a 10-month old daughter named Kaylah. In their spare time, they love exploring the New England area and have grown fond of living on the East Coast. Find Modern Dentistry’s reviews on Google and visit its website and Facebook page for more information.

Julio’s Liquors is a very unique store. What is your vision for it? Since purchasing the business, I’ve had a vision to create something that is so much more than a retail store. I view the store as a venue to provide education, build relationships and create a culture around the products we carry. People don’t realize that we are one of the leading liquor retailers in the nation and much of that is due to the way we connect with our customers and vendors. You seem to be interested in partnering with others in the industry...why is that? In keeping with the theme of collaboration and education, we partner with many of our vendors. In some cases it’s to educate our customers, in others it’s an opportunity to bring forth rare or specialty products not generally available. In one recent initiative we are partnering with a number of wine producers to create signature wines exclusive to our store. Keep in mind, these are not just relabeled as many stores do...these are our unique, exclusive wines. What products do you think are going to really grow in popularity? The growth in specialty whiskies and craft brews has been nothing short of spectacular. We are the largest sellers of both types of products in the area. Now, we are looking at “Craft Spirits” as the potential booming market. No matter what products come along, it is our goal to be the educational source that allows our customers to be more knowledgeable about the products they buy. How do you account for the popularity of specialized whiskies?

Specialty foods, accessories and an extensive wine selection, including a tasting room.

It has something to do with a maturing of tastes. As people mature they start to look for products that have a history and a culture behind them. Whiskey culture is a fascinating world and I have gone to great lengths to become an expert in the field. People with an interest in whiskey would be interested to know that I have been inducted into the Keeper of the Quaich Society in Scotland, one of whisky’s highest

Ryan Maloney honors. I also started a group for aficionados known as the Loch and Key Society. Those interested should visit our website at www.lochandkey.com. Do you see growth in the craft beer market? Oh for sure. Currently we carry about 2,000 craft beers but there are new ones coming online weekly. One of the new trends in micro brewing is “hyper-local” with beers being produced in your own town or very close by. We plan to be the “go to” place in the Northeast for craft beer selection and education. Julio’s is really known as a regional destination...how did you become a leader? It’s a never ending process. I never stop marketing the store and exposing it to new markets. Recently I was recognized for this by the industry magazine, Market Watch as the “Marketer of the Year”. But beyond that, I am passionate about the culture we have created and I plan to keep building on it...it not unusual for us to get a large number of people visiting us weekly from adjoining states or even hundreds of miles away. I always want people to realize what a true “destination store” they have right in their own back yard.

Students are taught by nurturing and professional staff members whose passion is to help young children excel and grow. Parents are encouraged to call and schedule a tour. What makes Gymnastics’ Learning Center and God’s Little Children stand out from the competition? For both staffs, nothing is more important than self-esteem. A positive self-esteem is the basis for human happiness- gold medals are empty without it. Pride in your accomplishments, confidence in your ability to succeed and the knowledge that you can be proud of your endeavors, are the greatest gifts that teachers and coaches can give to their students.

THE FITNESS ASYLUM

T

he Fitness Asylum is where you can come sweat, escape from life’s distractions, and work on transformation from the inside out. Our clients are women and men of all fitness levels who want to look better, feel better, and be better in all facets of their lives. Our fitness and personal development philosophies that we teach with our 12-week Body Challenge absolutely translate to careers, relationships, spiritual lives -really all the ways that we show up in this world. Getting healthy and fit benefits you in many hidden ways, and we pride ourselves on helping to unlock your potential. Bonnie Lefrak, the owner and voice behind the brand, has been actively involved with the physical fitness movement since 1994 when she first donned a leotard and jumped on stage to teach Jazzercise classes. She fell in love with the FUN and the feeling of community at each and every class. Fast forwarding to 1998, Bonnie looked into getting a personal trainer and finding out more Team Captains about being a personal trainer at the urging of her mom who told her “if she can teach 25 people at a time you certainly can teach one.” Falling in love with the gym, lifting weights and seeing muscles was a turning point in her life. That same year she became a personal trainer looking to help other women discover how lifting “heavier” weights could change their bodies beyond what typical cardio programs could. Since 1998 Bonnie has worked in management positions for some of the most well-known fitness companies, but always taught classes and trained clients because that is where her passion was. And still is. When preparing for her wedding in 2004, like many women, Bonnie got VERY SERIOUS about her exercise program. One day while working out solo in the gym she spied another woman across the gym with the most enviable arms ever, and she interrupted the training session to compliment the woman and ask the trainer if he would train her, too. His schedule was full but turns out the woman with the great arms was a trainer as well, and both of them were bodybuilders. Needless to say, Bonnie found herself not only looking fit for her wedding but seven months later she was on stage competing. Bonnie is no stranger to business. In January 2007, she opened the first kettlebell gym in the area, but found that she was too ahead of the curve and the niche too small. They say failure is a gift, and using that experience of closing a business she was now ready for something new, something that represented everything she had learned on and off the stage, especially her struggles with food and weight. The Fitness Asylum opened its doors in January 2011 and has been the changing lives now for over five-and-a-half years. The Fitness Asylum offers 12-week Body Challenges, 12-week Bikini Challenges, 12-week Spartan Training Challenges, bootcamps and specialty classes. Let us help you look better, feel better and be better.

A case for doing business locally

ODAY THE PHRASE “Shop Local” has almost become cliché. It’s on bumper stickers, newspaper ads and is even the subject of an ad campaign for one of the nation’s largest credit card companies… but does it really matter? The answer is a resounding YES! If you are feeling frustrated that the national economy is beyond your control, you can actually make an impact in your own backyard by spending your dollars right here in town. We’ve heard the statistics: When you spend $100 locally, $62 remains in the local economy. David Bagdon When you shop at a national chain, that same $100 will Publisher keep $42 in town, and when you buy online, $0 from that $100 will benefit the local economy… think about that for a moment.

When you do business locally you are helping to support your neighbors and your community. You’re helping a neighbor provide for their family, you’re helping them sponsor a local team, and you’re helping them succeed so they in turn can reinvest here in town. When was the last time you saw Amazon sponsor a local sports team? But, like all good deeds, buying locally does take a little effort. You’ll need to step away from the computer and drive a couple of miles… you may even have to wait a few moments in line, but you’ll be doing your part to strengthen your hometown economy. The Community Advocate is celebrating our 42nd year as a local business and we congratulate the local businesses that are succeeding in our communities. This holiday season and throughout the year ahead, we urge you keep your dollars in town where they will have a direct impact on the local economy.

History: Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union (SCFU) was founded in 1960 as the Shrewsbury Municipal Employees Credit Union. Its mission was to serve as a cooperative financial institution allowing members to pool their savings, lend to one another, and own the organization where they obtain financial services. Over the years, the credit union expanded its service area to Shrewsbury and all contiguous towns.

Traci Daniels, vice president, Daniels Insurance and Jim Dupont, Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union president and CEO

History: For over 100 years, Daniels Insurance Agency has been SFCU and Daniels, Together at providing a variety of insurance 489 Boston Turnpike products to protect the property, well-being, and peace of mind of its Shrewsbury customers. In fact, Traci and Bob Daniels are the 4th generation husband and wife team to oversee Services: Membership is open to those who live, work, worship or attend school in Shrewsbury or one of the bordering towns. SCFU also has no minimum balance requirements or maintenance fees. By joining a credit union, members become shareholders. Unlike for-profit banks, credit unions allow members to keep more money in their pockets through the advantages of higher savings and lower loan rates. We are currently offering highly competitive rates on mortgages, auto loans, personal loans, as well as home equity options. SFCU also offers commercial services, specializing in creative financing for small and large businesses. Current offerings include commercial real estate and equipment loans, business lines of credit and credit cards, as well as deposit products.

Commitment to community: SFCU has a strong sense of community – it has donated to a wide variety of organizations such as the public schools, police and fire departments and the Shrewsbury Public Library. In 2015, with a $5,000 donation, it became the first “Innovative Partner” to the Shrewsbury Public School’s Colonial Fund. The program was established, “to fund high impact innovations within [the schools] that would not otherwise be feasible” due to budgetary reasons. SFCU has also agreed to match all donations made during the 2016-2016 school year, up to $5,000. SFCU sold its former property on Main Street to the town in 2010, which allowed the Shrewsbury Public Library to be expanded onto that site. It also contributed $10,000 to the library’s Capital Campaign as part of The Asenath Eaton Society donor group. In keeping with its commitment to support community, the credit union also offers residents and groups complimentary use of its spacious community room for gatherings and meetings.

Services: Vice-President Traci Daniels works closely with an array of companies to bring the agency’s customers the most advantageous insurance quotes for your home, personal belongings, car, business venture and most of all - your family. By dealing with so many insurance providers, Daniels Insurance is able to provide customized rating allowing them to pair clients with the ideal company that can best service their unique needs. The agency can assist businesses find the right insurance plans as well. Like SFCU, Daniels Insurance Agency believes strongly in giving back to the community as well by donating funds to the school and other organizations. How did this unique relationship get started with SCFU?: Like the Credit Union, Daniels Insurance is always looking for ways to serve their clients better. Since they already serviced a large number of SCFU members, it seemed a natural progression that they would operate a location right in the branch. Not only does it make them very accessible but they are also able to offer members special pricing on their insurance needs.

ichard and Grace Hebert opened their candy manufacturing and retail business in 1978, in the large white Colonial building visible from I-495. Richard’s grandfather started the family candy business back in 1917, and Richard has been making candy since he was 14. The Hebert Family has been bringing quality chocolates and a variety of other confectioneries to New England families for over 89 years. Colonial Candies was created with one purpose: to provide families from all over New England with the same high quality chocolate that New Englanders have come to expect from the Hebert Family. In 1917, our forefather Frederick Hebert did not just create a business, but a family tradition which has remained strong through four generations. From our elegant boxed chocolates to our world-class basket arrangements and everything in between, we offer something for every taste — even our dietetic customers! Here at Colonial Candies, we believe that offering a quality product and outstanding customer service starts with a firm commitment to our forefathers, our family tradition, and most importantly… to you our customers. We remember our past and look with excitement toward the present and the future. All of the candy is made on the premises; the lower level of the building houses the candy-making operation, where the Hebert’s and other staff members work seven days a week, 364 days a year, in sweet production. Colonial Candies is only closed on Christmas Day. Business hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m Fri., Sat., Sun, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Diane Cournoyer Dance Center Diane Cournoyer Dance Center was established in Northborough in 1965. With a love and passion for the art, Diane started teaching neighborhood students in the basement of her home. As the studio grew, so did her need for a bigger space. She moved the studio to the Unitarian Church in Northborough. Many wonderful dancers came through those doors to dance every week but again the growth of the studio created the need for more space. Approximately 15 years ago the studio moved to its current location, 329 West Main St. This location has three spacious studios providing enough space to offer a wide variety of classes. Diane’s daughter Michelle, who began teaching at age 14, came on full time in 1990 and has been running the family business with Diane ever since. Diane and Michelle are not the only family members involved in the Dance Center. Eileen Cournoyer, Diane’s daughter-in-law, is on the faculty as well. The studio also has three additional dance teachers, each and every one of them having the same passion and love for dance as the Cournoyers. The Dance Center takes tremendous pride in offering quality classes with personal

attention given to all students with an emphasis on body placement and technique. Whether you are dancing as a hobby or want to dance competitively, the Dance Center can provide the proper education. In classic tradition, students are required to dress properly for class which includes a black leotard, tights according to dance genre and hair in a secure neat bun. Classes are offered in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Irish Step, Modern, Lyrical, Contemporary, Pointe, Hip Hop and Down with Dance (a class for children with Down syndrome). Children can start dance as early as two years old. Diane herself did not start dancing until she was in her midThe family twenties, which proves that you are never too old to start tradition dancing. continues, Three years ago the studio this is Michelle’s began offering competition daughter Sadie classes for dancers wanting to explore the sport. Heading into their fourth season, the dancers have brought back numerous special awards and trophies. The teachers at the Dance Center all agree that the real award is watching their dancers improve through hard work and dedication. The junior and senior competition teams took home a big win this year. They were awarded the 2016 Elite Dance Challenge National Dance-Off

champions. It was a wonderful ending to a very successful competition season. Both Diane and Michelle agree that through 51 years in business, dancers have come and gone but as educators one of the most rewarding moments is when a former student brings their child to study at the Dance Center. It brings back beautiful memories and provides a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment in fostering a passion for dance. The joy of dancing is for the professional and amateur alike. The discipline, grace, coordination and feeling of accomplishment benefit the body and the mind of students of all ages. The self-confidence acquired lasts a lifetime. The Dance Center is still accepting enrollments in their 2016/17 session. You can visit their website NorthboroDance. com and contact Michelle to discuss enrolling your dancer.

Sperry’s Liquors Although Sperry’s Liquors has six locations, the company retains that friendly and personable service that has made them the choice for so many over the years. Tony Speranzella, who now owns the company his father started 35 years ago, said that philosophy spirit of community spirit is as important now as it was back then. “Our prices are among the lowest in the area, and we see ourselves as a community retailer, sponsoring local teams and events,” he said. “We’ve seen a lot of competition come in from the big box stores and have expanded the lines we carry to meet them. We’re a family business, and we want to be your local, neighborhood store.” There are now six locations around the Metrowest area, all of which offer a broad selection of craft beers and wines. The Sudbury store sells only beer and wine, but the other stores have a full selection of fine liquors. Sperry’s also has two stores in Marlborough, one in Hudson, one in Southborough and one in Wayland. The stores include a walk-in humidor for cigars and small gourmet food sections. Southborough sells convenience grocery items as well. “All our stores offer a huge craft beer selection,” Brian Libby, Sperry’s general manager, said. “In Sudbury, for example, we carry close to 300 different craft beers. Craft beer fans enjoy trying new varieties.” “Our selection of wines varies from everyday bottles to the finest vintages. We have something for every price range,” including a wide selection of sparkling wines, he added. With the holidays just around the corner, Sperry’s experienced staff can help you with all of your holiday needs from advice on wines for Thanksgiving to delivery of holiday party supplies to great gifts. The staff is also able to help with party planning. The different locations host weekly wine and beer tastings. Check the website for each store’s specific times and offerings. Visit www.sperrysliquors for each store’s directions, hours and contact information. Tony Speranzella, owner of Sperry’s Liquors

James Mugford, owner of Northern Landscaping and Plowing, is a Westborough native. His grandparents owned Mugford’s Flower Shoppe in Westborough, so he grew up with gardens. Both of his brothers, Matt and John, now work with him. The company can do installations and can design a complete garden, including installing trees and shrubs. They work with two different nurseries to get shrubs and plants, so they can provide whatever a customer is seeking for their home or business. They also do landscape maintenance including mowing, trimming, pruning and fall cleanups. Northern Landscaping can assist you with hardscapes and can install stone, brick, block or timber walls and walkways. They can also build fire pits, along with retaining walls and playground enclosures. James has operated a snow plowing business for over three years as well. Services include commercial and residential snow plowing. For residential customers, they will plow the driveway, salt, and/or clear the walkways if the customer desires. For commercial customers, they will do salting, plowing, and snow removal, if the customer needs the snow off the lot. They will also shovel walkways and take care of any salting applications that are needed. The company also offers roof raking and snow removal from roofs.

Crown Bakery is now celebrating their 57th year in their same location on 133 Gold Star Blvd., in Worcester

ugford’s Flower Shoppe has been a family-owned business since Paul Mugford started it in the 1960s. The shop’s current owner, Christine Bakutis, has been running the business for nearly 25 years, as an independent florist in its original Westborough farm stand location. Mugford’s has a large selection of domestic and imported florals to create custom arrangements to suit your needs. Christine and her staff of professional florists are known for their beautiful designs and their unequaled customer service. For nearly 25 years, Chris has been selecting heritage and cultivated varieties of annuals, bulbs, perennials and flowering shrubs and trees with an eye towards her signature wedding styles. All flowers are grown pesticide- free, watered with rain and well water, and fed by compost created from their own green waste on site. When their gardens are resting, Chris and her staff source other local and domestic growers as well as international floral markets to get the best product with the gentlest global impact they can. The shop offers same-day flower delivery to destinations in Westborough, Northborough, Southborough, Marlborough and Shrewsbury. Rand-HarperPickering Funeral Home, Hays Funeral Home and Morris Funeral Home and Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital, UMass Memorial - Marlborough Hospital and Spectrum Health are all included in their delivery area. Mugford’s also delivers freshly made-to-order gift baskets filled with exceptional fruits, tasty snacks, positively indulgent candies, and charming gift items. Visit them online and order directly through their easy-to-use, secure online store.

Owner Jon Lundstrom’s father opened the business in 1960. Jon took it over 23 years ago. “Our specialty is wedding cakes. We make about 1,500 to 2,000 a year,” Jon said. “Brides are now looking for a simpler cake style, often with fresh flowers on top or around the cake. We have all kinds of flavors - our specialty rainbow, regular golden, red velvet, carrot, and chocolate,” he added. “We provide tastings to help decide what will work best for the couple,” he said. Specialty cakes for parties and other events are also available. For the holidays Crown Bakery offers an assortment of Swedish pastries and a variety of specialty gourmet foods are imported such as herring and glogg mixes from Sweden. The cafe is open when the bakery is open. The bakery makes their own breakfast sandwiches all day long. They also offer lunch fare such as deli sandwiches, calzones, Greek salads, soups, and rice pudding. Everything is made fresh from scratch here on the premises, including sandwiches which are made with their own bread, A whole list of gluten-free products, breads and sweets are also available. Catering, such as sandwich platters for offices, can also be scheduled. DŽŶĚĂLJ ϲ Ă͘ŵ͘ ƚŽ ϱ Ɖ͘ŵ͖͘ dƵĞƐĚĂLJ ƚŚƌŽƵŐŚ ^ĂƚƵƌĚĂLJ ϲ Ă͘ŵ͘ ƚŽ ϲ Ɖ͘ŵ͖͘ ůŽƐĞĚ ŽŶ ^ƵŶĚĂLJ

508.393.1399 www.EastMainAutoService.com

On July 1, 1990, local mechanics Ken Giles and Rick Kelly decided to strike out on their own and open East Main Automotive Service, Inc. For 27 years they have been servicing customers at the same 130 East Main St., Northborough location. What has been the key to your success? We are all about customer service. We do everything we can to make sure clients have a great experience, even down to washing their car before they leave the lot. This kind of commitment has won us a lot of friends and loyal customers. It’s not unusual that we get several generations coming to us from the same family…that’s quite a compliment.

What would people be surprised to learn about East Main Automotive? Probably the amount of cars we service and that we still manage to get people out on time. It’s not unusual that we service 30-plus cars a day, but we treat every single one with special attention. It’s still a one-day turnaround on most repairs.

How can you service so many cars so well? It starts with great diagnostics. We combine our decades of experience with the latest industry software so we’re able to identify the proper fix right away. We don’t believe in bolting on parts in hopes of fixing something… we identify the actual problem and then we fix it right…that saves our customers time, money and aggravation.

What are some little known secrets about your shop? Probably the range of vehicles we repair. Not only can we repair anything the dealers can but we also provide major fleet service. We also repair specialty and collectible vehicles as well as Mercedes of all types. There’s not much we can’t handle. People are also surprised that we sell tires at very competitive rates. It’s just one more way we make auto repairs and maintenance convenient for our customers. MERCEDES

There are currently 12 tracks in Florida. Hundreds of greyhounds from there have to be brought north in order to find homes. We are also working with protection groups in Argentina because many greyhounds from Florida are being sent to Argentina for racing and hunting. There is no animal welfare legislation there so we are trying to protect them. Thousands of hound crosses, beagles, etc. are continually vulnerable in shelters in the Mid-West where there is little spay/neuter and the shelters have to put down a high percentage of dogs. GHF brings some of these dogs to our shelter as representatives of all the other dogs not fortunate enough to be rescued.

GHF began on Mothers’ Day, 1983 in Cambridge, MA when founder Louise Coleman and her son brought home “Boston Boy,” a retired racer who ended his career at Wonderland. Subsequently, many greyhounds were placed in good homes. The organization has placed thousands of dogs over the years. Our goal is to place as many dogs as possible and also to continually educate the public about animal welfare.

in Hopkinton. In addition to finding homes for dogs we educate the public about what greyhounds and hounds are like as pets and about the plight these dogs face.

ATC SERVICES JUNK REMOVAL & DISPOSAL BUSINESS DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: We offer total estate cleanouts, the whole house, one room or one item. We are more than happy to help people move. We will also do small demolition jobs too. All metal will be taken for free on every cleanout to be recycled. We take tires, paint cans and air conditioners. We reclaim air conditioners and refrigerators. We break them down and take out the motors and copper to get the best price for scrap. We serve all of Metrowest and Worcester County.

WHAT MAKES YOUR COMPANY A GOOD CHOICE TO DO BUSINESS WITH?

76 Otis St., Suite 7 Westborough, MA

We have an in-house facility that recycles and disposes the items we collect. We would rather give somebody a bureau than throw it in the trash. There’s no sense throwing everything in the landfill. We do a better job for our customers than if they were to rent a dumpster. If a mattress or a tire is thrown in there, the dumpster staff goes through the load and will back-charge for those items. The bill may end up being considerably more than the expected rental fee. Our prices are the lowest in the industry.

We will also continue to honor our strong commitment to community service by working with organizations like Why Me Sherry’s House and The Children’s Miracle Network, as well as local organizations that promote skilled trades and technical education. As the two of us (Mark and Sue Meacham) continue in our roles as sole owners of the companies, we will still come to work each day excited about what we do and dedicated to providing the highest-quality service in the industry. So rest assured: Other than the name changes, there are no “big surprises” coming. In fact, we’re convinced the best is yet to come! Please don’t hesitate to contact us directly with any questions. Thank you for your patronage and we look forward to servicing your in-home needs well into the future.
