elping Hands Community Partners, Inc. is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit Massachusetts licensed reverse mortgage broker focused on sharing information with seniors and their family members about the pros and cons of reverse mortgages.

Helping Hands’ mission is to educate seniors about home financing options and, when appropriate, arrange reverse mortgages.

Reverse mortgages often conjure dire outcomes. But the facts are just the opposite. With changes to the government-insured loan program, formally called a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), the loan program is saver, and, under many circumstances, have resulted in a drastic cut in costs.

Financial and estate planners, tax specialists, attorneys, charitable organizations, religious leaders, housing counselors, and the adult children of seniors are realizing the fact that reverse mortgages give homeowners age 62 or older financial options to remain independent in their own homes. Lori Trawinski, director of banking and finance at the AARP Public Policy Institute, writes, "We think reverse mortgages can be a useful tool for some people.�

AARP fighting for long-term care solutions

assachusetts ranks 11th in the nation when it comes to meeting the long-term care needs of older residents and people with disabilities, and even more must be done, at an accelerated pace, to meet changing demographic demands. Specific areas of concern in Massachusetts include affordability, the quality of life and quality of care, and effective transition dimensions. This is according to a new, comprehensive, state-by-state Scorecard from AARP with support of the nation’s leading long-term care organizations, the Commonwealth Fund, and the SCAN Foundation.

“Picking Up the Pace of Change: A State Scorecard on Long-Term Services and Supports for Older Adults, People with Physical Disabilities, and Family Caregivers” – the third in a series of reports - ranks each state overall and on 25 specific indicators in five key dimensions: affordability and access; choice of setting and provider; quality of life and quality of care; support for family caregivers; and, effective transitions between nursing homes, hospitals and homes.

Massachusetts has made some progress to improve longterm services and supports for older adults and people with disabilities, as highlighted in this Scorecard. But, proposals in Washington, D.C., to drastically cut federal funding for the Massachusetts Medicaid program would threaten these advancements, likely resulting in our most vulnerable citizens losing the lifesaving supports that they count on.

The single strongest predictor of a state’s long-term care system is the reach of its Medicaid long-

term care safety net. That’s why AARP is also fighting to expand services provided at home and in the community, by shifting funds away from more expensive nursing home care.

Massachusetts ranks 15th in the nation with 45.5 percent of Medicaid and state-funded Long Term Services and Supports (LTSS) going to Homeand Community-based Services (HCBS) – the care setting that most Massachusetts residents prefer. This represents a decline from 2014, when Massachusetts had 48.7 percent of funding dedicated to HCBS. LTSS is a diverse set of services designed to help older people and those with disabilities. Services can be provided in a person’s home, in a community setting such as an adult day health center, or in a group residential facility like a nursing home.

Today, unpaid family caregivers provide the bulk of care for older Massachusetts residents, in part because the cost of long-term care remains unaffordable for most middle-income families. In Mas-

sachusetts, more than 844,000 residents help their aging parents, spouses, and other loved ones stay at home by providing assistance with bathing and dressing, transportation, finances, complex medical tasks like wound care and injections, and more. The value of this unpaid care totals about $11.6 billion.

That’s why AARP Massachusetts successfully passed the Caregiver, Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act into law in 2016.

This year, AARP Massachusetts is fighting for a caregiver tax credit to help family caregivers who face financial challenges as they help their loved ones remain at home.

These are all part of our advocacy efforts to help older adults and family caregivers, but we know that more needs to be done, and we must pick up the pace of change.

What is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s?

bout 5 million Americans, or 10 percent of those over 65 years of age, suffer from Alzheimer’s disease according to the Fischer Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation. Yet, despite the prevalence of this condition, there exists a great deal of confusion over what it is and what causes it.

When a loved one begins to have trouble with their memory, we panic. Is it Alzheimer’s? There is a difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia. Learn the differences so that you can be well informed.

One of the most common question I am frequently asked is "What is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer's disease?" On one level, the answer to this question is relatively easy and straightforward. Doctors are some of the best at confusing us.

Physicians seem to prefer the word "dementia," possibly because Alzheimer's has become such a loaded word. "Dementia" somehow sounds less frightening to many people, and now even the experts have started using the words interchangeably.

They aren't interchangeable. Alzheimer's disease and dementia are two very different things.

In order to explain the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s, one first needs to know what dementia is. Dementia is the deterioration of our cognition. In Latin it means “apart mind” or that your mind is losing the grip of your body. It is important to understand that dementia consists of signs and symptoms. This is because it is a syndrome and not a disease like Alzheimer’s. There are many causes for dementia and it can be progressive or stable.

Dementia is a non-specific syndrome that targets different areas of the brain. For this reason there are

many different symptoms associated with dementia. Typical areas of the brain that are affected are: communication, memory, orientation, problem-solving and attention. We speak of dementia when someone has significant memory loss plus another impairment that both cause social dysfunction. Unlike Alzheimer’s, dementia is not a disease in itself.

It is a syndrome and it has a variety of causes from which Alzheimer’s is one of them.

Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the appearance of plaques and tangles in the brain. You can find these tangles and plaques in every aging brain, but in people with Alzheimer’s disease there is an abnormal quantity. These plaques and tangles interfere with the functioning of different areas of the brain. Therefore Alzheimer’s is also called pathological rapidly aging of the brain.

So the exact difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s is that dementia is a non-specific syndrome

and Alzheimer’s is a specific disease.

Many people cannot explain the difference and this is probably because Alzheimer’s is the most prominent cause of dementia. Almost 70 percent of all people with dementia have the type of Alzheimer’s. Other causes of dementia are stroke, Parkinson’s, Lewy body disease, Fronto-temporal dementia, Huntington’s and even AIDS/HIV. But is it important to know what type of dementia patients have? In fact it sure is. Although there is a large variety of symptoms between all types of dementia, every type is characterized by certain specific symptoms. Your doctor or your neurologist are specialized in finding out what is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s. Their professional examination often results in a correct diagnosis.
